GOTHENBURG, Neb - “I’m a very curious person. I love the interesting, complicated stuff,” said Dr. Brady Dutton Beecham, the new Chief Medical Officer at Gothenburg Health. “I’m intrigued by complex systems, and a hospital is a very complex system. My role as CMO is to focus on the health of the hospital, which in turn has an impact on people’s health. It’s a huge challenge, and I want to make a difference.”

As of June 1, Gothenburg Health is pleased to announce Dr. Beecham in her new role. While she began as a locum provider in 2022 and has continued to take call in the Emergency Department, she will officially serve in two capacities moving forward. On the clinical side, she will see patients in an acute and emergency setting, while covering hospital and OB rounds. As the CMO, she will work to improve hospital systems.

“As a doctor, I work to help the individual. As a CMO, I work to help the hospital as a system,” Dr. Beecham said.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Dr. Beecham is a Nebraskan at heart. Her interest in the interactions between the natural world and humans led her to get a degree in Biology and Environmental Science Policy from Duke University. Her first job was with the health department as an epidemiologist when the West Nile virus was first discovered. Her interest in public health led her to Kerala, India on a Rotarian scholarship where she received her Masters of Public Health.

“No matter where you go, the body is the same. Having a body is such a universal experience,” she said.

After returning from India, she started medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. During medical school, she took a year off and lived in South Africa to do clinical trials for HIV, which she said was a successful study and allowed her to see the science being developed.

In her third year of medical school, she said she was required to do a rotation in a rural health setting, which she did in Lexington. “Being a doctor in a small town was wonderful and made me decide to become a family doctor because you get to do a little bit of everything,” she said. “You’re part of the community. You’re needed and helping people.”

After completing her Residency in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Beecham came back to full spectrum family medicine as a Staff Physician at Lexington Regional Health Center. During her time there, she volunteered as the Medical Director for Two Rivers Health Department and was serving in that capacity when COVID-19 arrived.

“It changed all of our lives in ways we didn’t expect,” she said, “but for me, one of the positive changes was the chance to join the team at Gothenburg Health.”

Dr. Beecham said she has received such a great welcome from Gothenburg Health and is excited to be part of a great team. “This is a great place to help people. It’s a great culture with a focus on community,” she said. She has enjoyed her work in the emergency room as it provides a different view of the body and a different moment in an illness or disease. “It’s made me a better doctor and great to know that I can help people in a different setting. The Emergency Department is intense clinical work,” she said.

Gothenburg Health announces new Chief Medical Officer

UPDATE 11am CDT on May 26, 2023 - Highways 6 and 34 are now open.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Highways in southwest Nebraska are closed due to overnight flooding. Highways 61 between Imperial and Benkelman, Highway 6 from Imperial to Palisade, and Highway 34 from Benkelman to Trenton remain closed Friday morning.

Reports 20 miles north of Benkelman were that 8 feet of water were over portions of the highway.

Highways 61 closed in southwest Nebraska due to flooding

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — The summer travel season has arrived! As Nebraskans kick-off summer, the Nebraska State Patrol is urging all motorists to practice safe driving.

“Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year and our troopers will be working hard to keep Nebraska roads safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “With millions of people hitting the road this weekend, travelers should plan ahead for busy roadways and share the road safely.”

Troopers will be on patrol throughout the state as part of the annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;campaign, which began on May 15 and runs through June 4.&nbsp;AAA is predicting more than 37 million people will be driving at least 50 miles this Memorial Day weekend.

NORTH PLATTE — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the North Platte Police Department, have arrested a person following a brief pursuit with a large box truck Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, a trooper observed a large box truck driving with defective lights on Highway 83 in North Platte near W. Rodeo Road. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield, jumped a curb, and fled through a parking lot. The truck then sideswiped a building and came to a stop near W. Rodeo Road and N. Sycamore Street. The driver then fled on foot and was not immediately apprehended.

The truck was determined to have been stolen from a business in North Platte. The trooper located multiple items inside the truck that belonged to the driver. Wednesday morning, the business from which the truck had been stolen reported finding a wallet where the truck had been parked. Items in the wallet matched the identifying items that had been found inside the truck.

The North Platte Police Department located the suspect and took him into custody on Wednesday. The suspect, Jeremiah Hebner, 32, of North Platte, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving under suspension, and theft by unlawful taking $5,000+. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

North Platte man arrested after pursuit with stolen truck

WASHINGTON —The ESOP Association represents the interests of millions of Employee Owners and their companies across the nation.&nbsp;

On May 18, the organization honored Eagle Communications Chairman Gary Shorman for a career spent helping to grow employee ownership in America, with the Michael Keeling Founder’s Award.&nbsp;

The award honors an individual for their contributions to the founding of Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOP) and for working to elevate awareness of the benefit and value of ESOPs.&nbsp;Eagle Communications has been an employee-owned company since 1998 with employees now owning 100 percent of the company.

The award was presented at the organization's Annual Awards Ceremony during The ESOP Association’s National Conference in Washington, DC.&nbsp;

The Founder's award was created upon Michael Keeling's retirement from The ESOP Association after 28 years as President. The organization only presented this award one other time, and that was to the founder himself.

"Shorman has set a lifelong example we can all be inspired by," the ESOP Association stated. “Shorman has been a passionate advocate while serving on the organization's Board of Directors, and worked to create the organization's Silver Tsunami video series to encourage ESOP formation."&nbsp;

"It has been an honor to serve the ESOP association and be recognized with this award," said Shorman. "Helping build the Eagle ESOP and being a champion for employee owned companies has been rewarding. Employee ownership creates a unique business environment where everyone shares in the success and shares in the growth of their company."

"Shorman also chaired the organization's search committee for the first leadership transition at TEA in nearly three decades. He chaired the Association during COVID, led the way as we modernized our Board governance procedures, and has helped direct more than one hundred thousand dollars to the Employee Ownership Foundation."

Association honors Eagle Chairman Gary Shorman with Founder's award 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Engineers who operate trains for Union Pacific will soon have much more predictable schedules that will allow them to plan when they are going to be off, a change addressing one of the key&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-207229bcd558b6a6c1d58f3f85e2d804">quality-of-life concerns</a>&nbsp;that pushed the rail industry to the brink of a strike last fall.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad announced a deal with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union Wednesday that will let UP's roughly 5,600 engineers plan on having&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-business-strikes-df14983a4b7b7623bf68390587beef94">four days off in a row</a>&nbsp;after spending 11 days straight on call. Within those 11 days, there will likely be some breaks between shifts because federal rules require 24 hours off after engineers work four straight days, but it's hard to predict where that time off will fall.

“The 11-4 work/rest schedule will be life-altering for employees who are used to working on-call 24/7, 365 days a year,” said BLET National President Eddie Hall. “This significant change in scheduling not only will make life better for locomotive engineers and their families, it also should help Union Pacific retain and recruit employees.”

Workers said during the contract talks that demanding schedules, combined with the railroads' strict attendance policies, were making it difficult, if not impossible, to take any time off, with train crews having the most unpredictable schedules. The engineers and conductors that operate the trains routinely get the worst of it because railroads cannot predict exactly when trains, which run around the clock, will be ready to leave.

But since Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-pete-buttigieg-strikes-congress-c95510555dcd4cdc2d839e61d1195b06">intervened and blocked</a>&nbsp;rail workers from going on strike because they worried about the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-climate-and-environment-government-politics-92ea7632a29f807ccc0e2658c50d731e">potential economic consequences</a>, Union Pacific and the other major freight railroads have made strides by reaching a number of agreements to start providing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/labor-unions-kansas-city-southern-strikes-business-6e66b66a99415e12c2c1fa642d6a842f">paid sick time</a>&nbsp;to workers. The union that represents conductors announced a deal with Norfolk Southern that's similar to the new BLET deal with UP to make their schedules more predictable. That pact will put conductors on a schedule of working six days in a row followed by two days off.

In another sign of progress, the conductors’ union — the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers — just announced another agreement Wednesday with CSX that will provide sick time for about 3,000 more conductors. A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-workers-csx-contract-paid-sick-time-strike-12b7de359b80c275e49d0f37c54c0759">previous deal</a>&nbsp;with CSX provided sick time to about 2,400 other conductors.

Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz said this agreement with the BLET will improve “the quality of life for the locomotive engineers who move the goods Americans rely on every day.” But the engineers union&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-workers-unions-paid-sick-time-negotiations-10c5e688b85ef9be4f231499666ab756">still lacks</a>&nbsp;a sick time agreement with Union Pacific. Within those 11 days, there will likely be some breaks between shifts because federal rules require 24 hours off after engineers work four straight days, but it's hard to predict where that time off will fall.<figure>

 </figure>“The 11-4 work/rest schedule will be life-altering for employees who are used to working on-call 24/7, 365 days a year,” said BLET National President Eddie Hall. “This significant change in scheduling not only will make life better for locomotive engineers and their families, it also should help Union Pacific retain and recruit employees.”Workers said during the contract talks that demanding schedules, combined with the railroads' strict attendance policies, were making it difficult, if not impossible, to take any time off, with train crews having the most unpredictable schedules. The engineers and conductors that operate the trains routinely get the worst of it because railroads cannot predict exactly when trains, which run around the clock, will be ready to leave.But since Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-pete-buttigieg-strikes-congress-c95510555dcd4cdc2d839e61d1195b06">intervened and blocked</a>&nbsp;rail workers from going on strike because they worried about the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-climate-and-environment-government-politics-92ea7632a29f807ccc0e2658c50d731e">potential economic consequences</a>, Union Pacific and the other major freight railroads have made strides by reaching a number of agreements to start providing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/labor-unions-kansas-city-southern-strikes-business-6e66b66a99415e12c2c1fa642d6a842f">paid sick time</a>&nbsp;to workers. Train engineers deal with UP will improve schedules, address quality-of-life concerns

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (MDT) Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the MPCC Ogallala Campus, 512 E. B St. South in Ogallala.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Cynthia Duncan, Kim Korgan, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. LINCOLN – The NE Chamber Foundation has announced the members of its new Leadership Nebraska class. This year’s class is the 15th&nbsp;in the program’s history.

Leadership Nebraska was founded in 2006 to identify current and emerging leaders throughout the state, enhance their leadership skills and deepen their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing Nebraska.

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — 21 troopers were honored for their efforts to remove impaired drivers from the road during the annual ‘MADD Heroes Awards’ Tuesday in Lincoln.

Each year, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) honors troopers, officers, deputies, and advocates for their work to prevent drunk driving through enforcement and education efforts. In total, 21 troopers from across Nebraska were among this year’s honorees.

“Impaired driving enforcement is a key aspect of the Nebraska State Patrol mission to keep our roadways safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “These troopers have done excellent work across our state. We look forward to a safe summer and urge all motorists to always have a sober driver. Thank you to MADD for their important work.”

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Nebraska lawmakers are one step away from repealing mandated motorcycle helmets in the state, advancing a long-sought proposal Wednesday.

State Sen. Ben Hansen of Blair, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, offered an&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/108/PDF/AM/AM1975.pdf">amendment</a>&nbsp;to do so during debate on a bill related to the Department of Motor Vehicles. His proposal, originally&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=49880">Legislative Bill 91</a>, would allow motorcycle riders to ride without a helmet if they are older than 21, have completed a safety course and wear eye protection.

Lawmakers voted 30-5 to amend the provisions of LB 91 into&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=49977">LB 138</a>, a bill by Lincoln State Sen. Carolyn Bosn related to DMV.

Hansen said numerous senators —&nbsp;Republican and Democrat —&nbsp;have tried for at least a couple of decades to change the law.

“There’s actually a coveted helmet that gets passed around to each senator who introduces it,” Hansen told the Examiner after the vote. “So now, I’m stuck with it, I guess.”

Hansen’s proposal differs from laws in other states that have allowed a blanket repeal of helmet requirements for adults. The advanced measure stipulates the completion of a DMV-approved basic motorcycle safety course. The DMV would update past driver records to show completion.

Training would include defensive driving, Hansen said, which can make the difference in avoiding some accidents.&nbsp;

The law would be a secondary enforcement for those older than 21, enforced as an infraction only if there is another reason for a stop. The proposal also increases the fine from $50 to $250. It would be enforced as a primary violation for those younger than 21.

Not all senators were not sold on the measure, including State Sens. Bruce Bostelman of Brainard, Mike Moser of Columbus, Merv Riepe of Ralston, Carol Blood of Bellevue and Megan Hunt of Omaha.

Bostelman and Moser, chair of the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee, voted against advancing Hansen’s bill from the Transportation Committee to the full Legislature.

Hunt said the bill is not a “helmet” law but a “halo” law because rather than personal freedom, it could increase cyclist deaths.

Blood said the efforts could lead to an&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33334475/">uptick in organ donations</a>, as has happened in other states where similar laws have been repealed. Motorcycles are sometimes called “donorcycles” for this reason.

Riepe, a former hospital administrator, said he’s seen the harm of motorcycle-involved crashes as well as what they can cost taxpayers in Medicaid payments.

State Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard said, however, there’s an economic benefit in welcoming cyclists to the state and not sending a message they should drive around Nebraska.

He pointed to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, where some cyclists from the west decide to travel through Wyoming instead of entering the Cornhusker State.

Nonresidents older than 21 could ride without a helmet if they wear eye protection and complete an equivalent course to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation basic course or some other substantially similar course in the driver’s resident state.

State Sen. Tom Brandt of Plymouth said the bill is more about personal freedom. Some of his constituents, he said, expressed intent to ditch a helmet in town but still wear one on interstate highways.

Hansen said his proposal remains in line with allowing individuals to make decisions when they are of age.

“Your decision to wear a helmet or not wear a helmet does not affect anybody else’s civil liberties,” Hansen said.

Hansen and other senators said they still encourage people to wear helmets after the bill becomes law.

The law would take effect Jan. 1, 2024, if passed as early as next week.

Nebraska lawmakers advance proposal to repeal motorcycle helmet mandate

Nebraskaland Days only 20 Days away

HOLYOKE, Colorado - On Tuesday, may 23 at approximately 8:18pm an officer of the Holyoke Police Department attemped to stop a motorcycle for registration and equipment violations near the intersection of East Denver Street and High School Avenue. when the officer activated his emergency lights, the motorcyle rapidly accelerated away from the officer eastbound on E. Denver Street. A vehicle pursuit of the subject was initiated by Holyoke Police Department which continued eastbound towards Imperial, Nebraska.&nbsp;

During the pursuit, the suspect, identified as Kenneth Johnston of Lamar, Nebraska, was operating at high speeds and driving in a reckless manner in order to evade law enforcement. During the pursuit, Johnston departed the roadway through a field near the intersectoin of Phillips County Road 43 and US Highway 6. He continued at high speeds through the fied and lost control of the motorcycle, resulting in a crash. The suspect attempted to continue to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers without any force being used. The suspect was transported to Melissa Memorial Hospital and was treated and released for minor injuries sustained during the crash.

During the subsequent investigation, it was discovered that the motorcycle was confirmed stolen, and Johnston had a valid warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in a Phillips County Court case. He was later booked into the Phillips County Jail on the charges of 1st Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Vehicular Eluding, Aggravated Driving Under Restraint Habitual Traffic Offender, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and for Failure to Appear. Johnston is currently housed at the Logan County Sheffiff's Office without bond until advised by a judge. Johnston is known to the Holyoke Police Department due to previous incidents and arrests.&nbsp;

Johnston is currently out on bond for a case out of Chase County, Nebraska related to drug possession, possession of drum manufacturing equipment, possession of a destructive device, and others.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - The first day of North Platte's Cody Park amusement rides is coming up this Friday, and for the 7th year in a row, Chad and Rhonda Fosdick and their company's Premier Rental, Glass Doctors and Mr. Appliance will offer the community Free Rides from 5-9pm Friday evening to kick off the summer at North Platte's largest park. Chad Fosdick says "we're all a tight knit family (Premier Rental, Glass Doctors, Mr. Appliance employees), but we vary rarely can all get together because we're all out working and helping customers." He says that "selfishly it's a way for us to all get together and do an event together, then you couple that with it's Cody Park free rides; it's even better."

In addition to the free rides, the Cody Park Concessions stand will be open with it's famous ice cream and Dusty Trails will be there with their petting zoo.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Legacy Gymnastics sent 8 girls to regional championships in April.&nbsp; These girls competed at state and got the qualifying All-around score needed to go to Regionals. At regionals they competed for the state of Nebraska against 7 other states (Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North &amp; South Dakota, and Wisconsin). All gymnasts are divided into multiple divisions based on level and age and compete against their division. There are 4 events they compete in and each event score comes out of a 10.0 (perfect score). All 4 event scores are added up to get the all-around score for each gymnast.&nbsp;Coaches for Legacy Gymnastics are Sarah Antonmarchi and Dez Stanton.

Coach Antonmarchi was happy with the way the championships concluded. "These gymnasts have worked long and hard hours to get where they are today, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. They really went out and gave it their all and represented Nebraska and Legacy very well."

Legacy Gymnastics wraps up Regional Championships

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Some pretty special horses carry special ladies during the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, which kicks off Nebraska's official State Celebration, NEBRASKAland DAYS in less than a month. The visiting state rodeo queens, including Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America, get to ride on horses, hand-picked from herds owned by Marvin and Janet Mueller, Sutherland, and Tim and Celie Vaughn, Hershey.

The Muellers and Vaughns bring anywhere from six to twelve head of horses to North Platte, specifically for the visiting rodeo queens to ride during the grand entry each night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, which is held June 14-17.

Visiting rodeo queens often fly in or drive from a distance, and are unable to bring their own mounts, which makes it necessary to provide a horse for them while they are at the rodeo.

It takes a special horse for the queens; one that is not only well-broke, but one that is seasoned: accustomed to the sights and sounds of a rodeo arena: flags, loud music, stagecoaches and wagons, crowds, and other distractions.

Both Muellers and Vaughns rodeo on their horses: Marvin and daughter BoDell in regional associations like the Mid-States Rodeo Association, and Tim and Celie’s daughters, Shayda, when she was in high school, and Ali, who is still a high school rodeo contestant.

Both family’s horses are known to be reliable, good mounts.

The Mueller’s horses “are broke,” Janet said. The horses “are hauled (to rodeos), so flags don’t bother them.&nbsp; We want to make sure everybody is safe. They’ve been to enough rodeos, that by the time a rodeo queen steps into the stirrup, they could care less about a flag or a wagon coming in amongst them.”

The Mueller family is well-known for having horses that kids and beginners can ride; often at brandings, someone will ask Marvin for a well-broke horse to ride, for kids or an inexperienced rider. “Everybody expects that we have horses like that,” Janet said. “We take pride in that.”

Marvin is pleased that kids and beginners ask to ride his horses.

“He is happy as a lark when he can fulfill somebody’s dream of roping at the branding pen, or they come to our house to ride,” Janet said. “We let them learn of the love we have for our horses, and share that with other people as well.” Both Marvin and Janet used to train horses, but back injuries have prevented Janet from training and riding the past few years.

“I’m very proud of my husband’s horse training abilities,” she said.

The Vaughns’ horses have been around the rodeo block as well.

“Our girls do pole bending, team roping, breakaway roping and barrels” on their horses,” Tim said. “Our kids high school rodeo so the horses that we haul have been around. They’ve seen the flags and the crowds and they’ve heard the music.”

The Muellers and Vaughns warm up the horses for the queens, because the women are busy with autograph signings and don’t have the time to ride the horses before the grand entry.

The rodeo is often a must-stop destination for Miss Rodeo state queens from around the area, including Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, North Dakota, and even as far away as Florida and Idaho. They come in on Monday of rodeo week for the Miss Rodeo Nebraska coronation activities and usually stay through the selection of the state queen, held at the rodeo on June 14.

Miss Rodeo America Kennadee Riggs will also be on hand at the rodeo this year.

This year’s Buffalo Bill Rodeo is June 14-17 in North Platte. Performances begin nightly at 8 pm. Tickets range in price from $11-$24 and can be purchased online at NebraskalandDays.com, at the NebraskalandDays office, and at the gate.
