LINCOLN, Neb -&nbsp;&nbsp;The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) announced the recipients of $22,825,000 in awards through the 2022 round of Nebraska’s Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF) earlier in this month.

Authorized by the Rural Workforce Housing Investment Act of 2017, the RWHF helps communities create quality, affordable housing to accommodate growth.

For the 2022 funding cycle, RWHF awards were available to eligible non-profit development organizations who supplied at least a fifty percent match (that is, fifty cents for every one dollar of RWHF funds awarded). In many cases, local financial institutions and employers partnered with the primary applicant in providing the local match. Combined, today’s recipients contributed more than $12.1 million in matching funds.

DED administers the RWHF program on behalf of the State of Nebraska through a competitive application process.&nbsp;The department then partners with recipients to provide input regarding project design, development, and implementation.

“Growing rural Nebraska is a priority for our agency,” said DED Interim Director Joe Fox. “The RWHF supports job creation and helps attract residents to our rural communities through strategic investments in affordable, high-quality housing. We had an outstanding batch of applicants for this cycle of RWHF awards. Congratulations to the awardees!”

Awards were made possible by a general fund allocation authorized by the Nebraska Legislature in 2022.

Award winners from the area included the McCook Economic Development Corporation with $702,000, they had $351,000 in matching funds.

West Central Nebraska Development District was awarded $1,000,000 for the Imperial area, they had a $500,000 match.

The Nebraska Optometric Association (NOA), is conducting research to learn more about Nebraska families and their barriers to health care, including preventive check-ups.

“We know Nebraskans face many unique challenges and barriers to healthcare,” said Janet Seelhoff, NOA Executive Director. “We want to look into these obstacles to better understand how to help families get access to annual preventive eyecare.”

The survey, available online at <a href="https://tinyurl.com/3ztntep3" target="_blank">nebraska.stage.aoa.org/survey</a>, asks about many aspects of healthcare and wellness, but does focus on eye health of all ages of residents within a household, as well as the demographics and zip code.

“What impacts someone in Omaha will be different than in McCook, and even still from Valentine or Stapleton,” Seelhoff said. “We truly want to understand the needs of all Nebraskans.”

NOA is looking to get information on all ages, as well. Of particular interest is finding out what keeps children from access to health and eye exams.

“Many people believe if they don’t have vision issues, they don’t need to visit an optometrist,” Seelhoff said. “However, eye health exams check so much more than eyesight. They are just as important for children who see fine as they are for seniors who have worn glasses for decades.”&nbsp;

NOA will report out on their findings when the survey analysis is complete later this summer. The survey will be available through June 7. Participants can choose to enter a drawing for prizes, including $100 VISA gift cards and family passes to the Nebraska State Fair.

“Please consider taking and sharing the survey. “The information will be incredibly valuable to help optometrists across the state better identify the needs of Nebraska families and help address access to eyecare,” Seelhoff said.

LINCOLN, Neb - One lucky player who bought a 2by2 ticket for the Saturday, May 20 drawing is holding a ticket worth $22,000.

The Nebraska Lottery has confirmed that one ticket sold for Saturday's 2by2 draw matched all four winning numbers for the $22,000 top prize. McCOOK, Neb - Nebraska cattle producers have the opportunity to attend one of two, full-day Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship events this June. Both events will offer the opportunity for individuals whose primary language is Spanish to participate in sessions as well.&nbsp;

“We are excited to be able to offer many of the sessions presented at these two events in both English and Spanish” said Jesse Fulton, Livestock Systems Educator &amp; Director of Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance. “We know it is important for those whose primary language is Spanish that work on cattle operations daily to have industry relevant education available to them as well.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stockmanship and Stewardship is offered through a partnership between the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the Beef Checkoff, Beef Quality Assurance (BQA), and Merck Animal Health. The two Nebraska locations are in Norfolk on Tuesday, June 13, at the Lifelong Learning Center and Ag Complex and McCook on Thursday, June 15, at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds Kiplinger Arena.&nbsp;

Additionally, registered producers can also attend a grazing workshop on June 14th in Norfolk at the Lifelong Learning Center where speakers will cover grazing management to promote soil health, settling cattle on pasture, and virtual fencing.

During the 13th and 15th events, attendees will enjoy a Certified Angus Beef ® strip steak lunch courtesy of Cargill Animal Protein and Certified Angus Beef. During lunch, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) will share how they are using BQA certifications to share every cattleman’s commitment to raising healthy, nutritious, and high-quality beef with consumers and the brand’s licensed partners. BQA is a national program that offers educational programming on proper management techniques, with a commitment to quality through every segment of the beef industry.

“Certified Angus Beef cares about animal welfare because its partners care about animal welfare,” says Bruce Cobb, CAB executive vice president of production. “We know producers do a great job caring for their livestock and BQA is a great way to verify that commitment with consumers.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINCOLN, NEB. — The Nebraska State Patrol arrested multiple people during incidents at the Nebraska State Capitol Building during legislative debate on Friday afternoon.

During the legislative debate, at approximately 2:40 p.m., multiple observers in the opponent balcony began yelling. Two individuals threw objects over the balcony onto the legislative floor. Those individuals, Lucia Salinas, 24, of Omaha, and Maghie Miller-Jenkins, 36, of Lincoln, were arrested for obstructing a government operation and disturbing the peace. Another individual was yelling repeatedly and refused law enforcement orders to leave the balcony. That individual, identified as Mar Lee, 25, of Lincoln, was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.&nbsp;

The legislature’s presiding officer, Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly, order that the balconies be cleared for the remainder of the debate. On the proponent balcony, a woman refused to leave. Troopers gave repeated orders to vacate the balcony, but the woman did not comply. Danna Seevers, 56, of Seward, was arrested for disobeying a lawful order.

At approximately 3:25 p.m., a trooper observed a person intentionally preventing a legislative Sgt. At Arms from opening a door in the rear of the legislative chamber. The trooper told the man to leave the area. The man was non-compliant. The trooper then ordered the man to vacate the capitol. The man again refused to comply. The trooper attempted to place the man under arrest and the subject resisted. Another trooper arrived to assist taking the subject into custody. The man, Benjamin Buras, 40, of Lincoln, was arrested for resisting arrest and trespassing.

As troopers were attempting to take Buras into custody, a woman approached and tried to push past another trooper. The trooper held her back, at which time the woman punched the trooper in the chest. She was immediately taken into custody. Sara Crawford, 33, of Lincoln, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer.

All six were lodged in Lancaster County Jail.

Nebraskaland Days Concerts just over a month away: Two big nights of concerts

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Gabriela Navarrete, 44, of Minden, Nebraska, was sentenced today in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for misuse of a social security number. Navarrete was sentenced to time served and will serve 3 years on supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

On November 16, 2017, Gabriela Navarrete filled out and signed a Form I-9 in order to begin employment at Casey’s General Store in Nebraska. On the Form I-9, she filled in the blanks for “U.S. Social Security Number” with a social security number that did not belong to her. As verification of the information provided on the Form I-9, Navarrete provided a Social Security Card bearing her name and the specific social security number (SSN).

Navarrete knew that SSN had not been assigned to her by the Commissioner of Social Security. She provided that SSN with the intention to deceive Casey’s General Store into believing that number was assigned to her. Navarrete made that false representation to satisfy Section 274A(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.

The Hot Sheets: May 19, 2023

On May 17 at approximately 2:47 p.m. Scottsbluff Police Officers responded to a report of an in progress protection order violation in the area of Ave X in Scottsbluff. 

 The suspect was reported to be 35-year-old Scottsbluff resident, Joshua Larez, who was driving a 2004 Black Honda Accord.

  Larez was also needed for questioning for multiple protection order violation investigations. Recently, he has continually left the area after allegedly violating the  order and has been unable to be contacted.

 Responding Officers located the vehicle driven by Larez in the area of Five Rocks and Stable Club Road. 

 Scottsbluff Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop with Larez who then fled the area south bound in his vehicle on Five Rocks.   Scottsbluff Officers pursued the vehicle, attempting to apprehend Larez as he traveled south into Gering on Five Rock’s Road.

"As Larez was attempting to flee Police, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed just south of the intersection of Five Rocks and D Street in Gering," Scottsbluff&nbsp;Patrol Sgt. Andrew Soucie said. "Larez’ vehicle overturned and rolled off the roadway landing right side up in the ally next to Five Rocks causing damage to the roadside barrier cables."

Larez was the only occupant of the vehicle.

"Larez then fled from the vehicle on foot.  Scottsbluff officers were assisted by the Gering Police Department and the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office," Soucie said. "Agencies were able to apprehend Larez in a nearby residence after it was determined he had entered into a nearby resident’s garage in an attempt to hide."

Larez was transported to the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff to receive care for his injuries. 

 Charges are pending in regards to multiple protection order violations, flight to avoid arrest, possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl, willful reckless driving, leaving the scene of an injury accident, possession of drug paraphernalia and other traffic related offences.&nbsp;

Madison Middle School's Sauer is May Teacher Of The Month

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Cory D. Sikes, 41, of Holdrege, Nebraska, was sentenced Wednesday, May 17 in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for possession of child pornography. Sikes was sentenced to 138 months in prison and will also serve 10 years on supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. Sikes was additionally ordered to pay $3,000 which will contribute to funds established for victims of these types of crimes.

This case began when a CyberTipline Report (“CTR”) was provided to the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children from a social media application on October 31, 2021. The CTR specified that eight images and one video depicting child pornography were uploaded by an individual, later identified as Sikes, between the dates of October 28, 2021 and October 29, 2021.

Based on the information from the CTR, a search warrant was received and executed on January 13, 2022, for Sikes’s residence. During the search, Sikes was interviewed and admitted to searching for child pornography online. Several of Sikes’s devices were seized during the execution of the search warrant. The devices were forensically downloaded and examined. Sikes’s personal cellphone contained 120 images of child pornography and another 483 images were questionable and/or child erotica. His laptop contained 350 images of child pornography and another 500 images which were questionable and/or child erotica.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Hot Sheets: May 18, 2023

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Over 36,000 individual bottles of drinking water were collected by 2 North Platte businessmen over the course of 3 weeks. That's nearly 18 pallets with close to 84 cases of water on each of them. What started as a friendly competition between friends to collect water for local rural fire departments before the summer wildfire season began, became a huge event and concluded Wednesday afternoon when all the water was delivered to North Platte Fire Station 1. Agri-Affiliates' Chase Dodson and Jordan Boston, State Farm Insurance came up with the idea in early April, by early May they were already collecting donations, by the pallet.&nbsp;

North Platte Fire Chief Dennis Thompson said "this water is life sustaining for our firefighters out on these wildfires. It's critical that we keep them hydrated." Thompson told the POST that the water pallets will be distributed amongst 12 departments that have a mutual-aide agreement with each other including Hershey, Maxwell, Wallace, Tryon, Sutherland, Curtis, Stapleton and others.&nbsp;

Many local businesses joined the effort with donations including: Ag Valley Coop, Title Services of The Plains, HD Management, Family Hearing Specialists, Kohler Trailer Sales, TD Angus, Dodson Land Management, Fortify Group, North Platte Stockyards, Mark and Shelly Miller, Shay and Lindy Miller, Ruth and Gary Stearns, Agri-Affiliates, Sargent Irrigation, Olson Farms, Norder Supply, Arnold Insurance Agency, Culligan Water and many others that showed up and donated cases of water.&nbsp; Gary's Super Foods helped by discounting pallets of water for this event.

In the end Chase Dodson did collect a few more bottles of water than Jordan Boston, but who's counting?&nbsp; Boston will be dunked in a dunk tank on June 2nd at the 5th anniversary of his State Farm business.&nbsp;

The Other Side of the Wheel is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (CST) June 3. Instruction will be live at the MPCC Valentine Campus and streamed to MPCC campuses in Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala, McCook and North Platte.

Michelle Witt Moore will teach the class. The fee is $99.

MPCC offering class about commercial trucking compliance

LINCOLN — A grassroots effort to save the crumbling Virginia birthplace of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather appears to have succeeded.

A Virginia realtor, Katherine Solenberger, has purchased the house to spare it from demolition, and she intends to donate it to a nonprofit within a year or so, according to Ashley Olson, executive director of the National Willa Cather Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska.

The organization had been seeking donations and benefactors to save the structure&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/04/07/cather-official-hopes-deteriorating-birthplace-of-famed-author-can-be-saved/">after it was announced last month</a>&nbsp;that the home, and surrounding acreage, was going up for sale.

Olson said publicity about the impending sale generated more than $30,000 in donations toward a purchase, as well as the offer by the local realtor.

“We are looking forward to working with a nonprofit collaborator to deploy these funds for the stabilization and preservation effort,” Olson said Tuesday.

“In Cather’s sesquicentennial year, it is wonderful to see her legacy embraced in Virginia,” she added.

Cather was born Dec. 7, 1873, in the white,&nbsp;clapboard home that sits along a turnpike near Gore, Virginia.

But the home, which has been vacant since the 1970s, has fallen into disrepair in recent years. It has been deemed unsafe for visitors because of its broken windows, rusty metal roofing and sagging front porch.

Olson said the Cather organization was connected with Solenberger via local Cather fans and members of the author’s family who live in the area.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/willa-cathers-150-years-to-be-celebrated-throughout-2023/">series of events is planned this year</a>&nbsp;to celebration the 150th anniversary of Cather’s birth.

Cather’s family moved to Nebraska when she was 9 years old, but her birthplace figured into some of her writings.

The birthplace has been on the Register of Historic Places since 1978. The owner lived in a second house on the premises and used the Cather birthplace as an office and writing studio.

But the former owner, Charles T. Brill Jr., who recently died, rebuffed an effort a few years ago to sell the property to a group that included some Cather descendants.
