NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/std/statistics/2021/default.htm">data</a>&nbsp;Tuesday showing how chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been accelerating, but doctors are hoping an old drug will help fight the sexually transmitted infections.

Experts believe STDs have been rising because of declining condom use, inadequate sex education and reduced testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Millions of Americans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/monkeypox-science-health-covid-epidemics-aaac64591251293f45c225d3fe963d0c">are infected</a>&nbsp;each year. Rates are highest in men who have sex with men, and among Black and Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.

“Sexually transmitted infections are an enormous, low-priority public health problem. And they’ve been a low-priority problem for decades, in spite of the fact that they are the most commonly reported kind of infectious disease,” said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., a retired health official who lectures at the Colorado School of Public Health.

To try to turn the tide, many doctors see promise in doxycycline, a cheap antibiotic that has been sold for more than 50 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is drafting recommendations for using it as a kind of morning-after pill for preventing STDs, said Dr. Leandro Mena, director of the agency's STD prevention division.

The drug is already used to treat a range of infections. A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2211934">study</a>&nbsp;published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine showed its potential to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

In the study, about 500 gay men, bisexual men and transgender women in Seattle and San Francisco with previous STD infections took one doxycycline pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Those who took the pills were about 90% less likely to get chlamydia, about 80% less likely to get syphilis, and more than 50% less likely to get gonorrhea compared with people who did not take the pills after sex, the researchers found.

The study was led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and built on a similar French study that saw promise in the idea.

“We do need new approaches, new innovations” to help bring sexually transmitted infections under control, said Dr. Philip Andrew Chan, who is consulting with the CDC on the doxycycline recommendations.

Mena, of the CDC, said there is no sign the STD trend is slowing.

Mississippi had the highest rate of gonorrhea cases, according to 2021 CDC data released Tuesday. Alaska saw a sharp increase in its chlamydia case rate that allowed it to overtake Mississippi at the top of that list. South Dakota had the highest rate of early-stage syphilis.

And Arizona had the tragic distinction of having the highest rate of cases in which infected moms pass syphilis on to their babies, potentially leading to death of the child or health problems like deafness and blindness.

Using an antibiotic to prevent these kinds of infections won’t “be a magic bullet. but it will be another tool,” said Chan, who teaches at Brown University and is chief medical officer of Open Door Health, a health center for gay, lesbian and transgender patients in Providence, Rhode Island.

Experts noted the CDC will have many factors to weigh as it develops the recommendations.

Among them: The drug can cause side effects like stomach problems and rashes after sun exposure. Some research has found it ineffective in heterosexual women. And widespread use of doxycycline as a preventive measure could contribute to mutations that make bacteria impervious to the drug, as has happened with antibiotics before.

Nevertheless, the San Francisco Department of Public Health in October became the first U.S. health department to issue guidance about doxycycline as an infection-prevention measure. And some other clinics have been been recommending the antibiotic to patients who may be at higher risk.

Derrick Woods-Morrow, a 33-year-old artist and an assistant professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, is an early adopter. Woods-Morrow, said he isn't a fan of condoms — they can break and sometimes people slip them off during sex. But he wants to stay healthy.

About a decade ago, he started taking an anti-viral medication before sex to protect himself from HIV infection. Five years ago, a doctor told him about research into whether doxycycline might protect people from other diseases.

“I thought it was probably in my best interest to protect myself, and my partners as well,” he said. He said it’s been a positive experience and that he hasn’t tested positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis while using it.

“I feel like it’s a tool to sort of take back the sexual freedoms that someone may have lost and to really enjoy sex and interactions with people with a piece of mind,” he said.

STDs are on the rise; morning-after-style pill may help

NORTH PLATTE, NE - On two separate occasions in one week, Great Plains Health security guards sprang into action to help patients who arrived at the hospital in distress. Security guards are trained in basic life support (BLS), a type of care that any community member can learn that focuses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway obstructions.

Until these back-to-back instances, GPHealth security guards had never needed to use BLS skills in real time. Regardless, they were prepared when the moment arrived, and their skills helped save lives.

Ogallala Methodist Church hosting Spring Fun Fest Saturday

APRIL 27, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Washington man following a fatal crash in Furnas County, which claimed the lives of two people and critically injured three others.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, a Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling northbound on Highway 283. At that time, a Dodge Ram 3500 pulling an empty car trailer was traveling westbound on Highway 89, which has a stop sign at the Highway 283 intersection. The pickup ran the stop sign and struck the passenger side of the Hyundai.

One occupant of the Hyundai, an adult female, was pronounced deceased on scene. Four additional occupants of the Hyundai were transported to hospitals in critical condition. One of those patients, a female child, was flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and has since passed away.

The driver of the Hyundai and another female child were transported to Cambridge Memorial Hospital. The driver has since been flown to Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln. A male child was transported to Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas and has since been flown to a hospital in Wichita. All three remain in critical condition. Names are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

The two occupants of the Dodge were transported to Norton County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once released from the hospital, the driver of the Dodge, identified as Kyiaz Ulanov, 28, of Lynnwood, Washington, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide. He was lodged in Phelps County Jail.

The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction investigation.

Driver Arrested After Multi-Fatality Crash in Furnas County

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– Pelicans and turkeys welcomed high schoolers from across Nebraska to Lake McConaughy for the 31st&nbsp;annual Nebraska State Envirothon April 26, 2023. Dawson County Envirothon Club took home the championship along with $1,500 and will represent Nebraska at the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon in New Brunswick, Canada, in July.

Envirothon is an environmental education program for high school students that combines classroom learning and outdoor activities. This year’s competition was hosted at the University of Nebraska’s Cedar Point Biological Station at Lake McConaughy near Ogallala.

“Envirothon allows students to get outdoors and learn about natural resources in a hands-on environment,” said Dr. Orval Gigstad, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts president. “The activities are designed to help students become environmentally aware, action-oriented adults, but also exposes them to many exciting career opportunities.”

During the state competition, five-member teams were tested on their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, policy, range, soils and wildlife, as well as prepared and delivered an oral presentation focusing on a current environmental issue. The 2023 oral presentation theme “Adapting to a Changing Climate” challenged teams to propose a solution to a complex problem before a panel of judges.

Eighty-six teams competed in the regional contests during February and March, and 14 teams qualified to participate at the state competition.

Dawson County Envirothon Club will represent Nebraska at the NCF-Envirothon July 23-29, 2023, to compete for a top prize of $15,000. The international NCF-Envirothon will be hosted at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada, and include more than 40 teams from the U.S., Canada, China and Singapore.

Wallace Agriculture Instructor the April Teacher of The Month

LINCOLN, Ne - The Volleyball Day in Nebraska outdoor event in Memorial Stadium sold out on Thursday morning, the third day tickets were on sale to the public. Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public on-sale on Wednesday and Thursday. Approximately 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday and Thursday. That number does not include field-level seating or indoor club seating. Nebraska will host Omaha at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30 in a regular-season match in Memorial Stadium. Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public on-sale on Wednesday and Thursday. Approximately 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday and Thursday. LINCOLN — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol and tobacco compliance checks at numerous businesses across Nebraska.

During the months of March and April, investigators have conducted tobacco compliance checks in Antelope, Boyd, Holt, Knox and Pierce counties. In total, 85 businesses were inspected. Nine of those businesses sold tobacco to a person under 21 years of age. The compliance rate for the checks was 89%.&nbsp;The compliance checks were funded by Areas Substance Abuse Prevention coalition under grant #B08T1083064-01 from the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The views, policies, and opinions expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of ONDCP, SAMHSA, or HHS.

On Saturday, April 15, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Scottsbluff County. This project&nbsp;was supported in whole or part by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

In total, 18 businesses were inspected. All of those businesses refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 100%. All of the businesses check the minor’s ID.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, April 5, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks&nbsp;in Dawson County. This project was supported in whole or part by grant #93.959 under the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Region II Human Services, and the Nebraska DHHS Division of Behavioral Health.&nbsp;

In total, 10 businesses were inspected. Six of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 40%. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.&nbsp;

Clerks who sell tobacco or alcohol to a minor are cited. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor to referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. The businesses involved in these compliance checks included convenience stores, restaurants, liquor stores, and bars.

Werner Construction of Hastings is the prime contractor for this project. Work includes bridge
repair over the Tri-State Canal, new roadway and driveway asphalt placement, and earth
construction with seeding.


For the bridge work, traffic will be in one lane with temporary traffic signals. This is anticipated to last
two months. For asphalt placement, traffic will be maintained with daytime lane closures with a pilot
car and flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is November.

The free&nbsp;City Nature Challenge Mini Bioblitz Arbor Day Event is open to all ages.&nbsp; Plant and learn about trees of Nebraska, learn about 
wildlife that use trees, identify and photograph all other living 
organisms to add to iNaturalist, and learn about citizen science. This 
will be at the outlet of Lake Maloney between the main boat ramp and
