North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath talked with Justin Petska about the upcoming Hershey Fall Festival this weekend.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The 2023 Hershey Fall Festival in Hershey starts this Friday and runs through Sunday. Saturday is the main day of the festival with different events for everyone in the family to enjoy. The golf tournament kicks off Friday. Saturday morning is the parade, and the cap the evening on is the concert.&nbsp;

The event is one that everyone in Hershey and the surrounding areas look forward to every year. "We are ready to go, it's a big deal that we build up all year and now the week is here", said Justin Petska. "We can't wait to share a little bit of Hershey with everyone and bring some people in."&nbsp;

This year the concert is being performed by Muscadine Bloodline with Drew Phillips as the opener. The concert will take place on the main street. Tickets can still be purchased. (Audio) 2023 Hershey Fall Festival - Conversation with Justin Petska

Last night during the Chase County Fair a lone deputy encountered an individual with an outstanding warrant from Chase County. He made contact with the individual and attempted to arrest him. The suspect instantly pulled away from the lone deputy and started assaulting him. 

The deputy attempted to deploy his Taser but it was ineffective on the suspect. Fortunately several Good Samaritans were watching the incident.  While the deputy was on the ground trying to defend himself and get the suspect under control, without hesitation, the Good Samaritans, assisted the deputy in gaining control of the suspect until more officers arrived. 

During this incident the suspect also assaulted one of the Good Samaritans by biting him multiple times. When additional officers arrived on scene, they were able to take control of the suspect and he was handcuffed. The suspect then claimed he was injured during this incident.

As a precautionary measure, the suspect was taken to the hospital to be checked out by a doctor. After examination and X-rays, the Doctor reported the suspect had no injuries. Due to the combativeness and non-compliant behavior, the suspect was transported to another jail facility.  He has been charged with felony assault of an officer, resisting arrest, 3rd degree assault of another individual. More charges may be coming.

The Chase County Sheriff’s Office would like to personally thank each individual who assisted this lone deputy when they saw that it he was in a dire situation. They did not hesitate to help and were not concerned for their own safety but for the safety of the deputy. 

It is a good feeling to know that if we get into a dangerous situation,  the public is willing to help without hesitation. We feel honored and privileged to serve our community. God Bless each one of you.

LINCOLN —&nbsp;The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has approved the first step in a process that could allow a Hastings-based company to transfer its racetrack license to western Nebraska.

Commissioners voted Friday to approve a 12-week, $48,000 market study with Innovation Group. That study could set up final approval later this year of a racetrack in Ogallala after Hastings Exposition &amp; Racing Inc. announced&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/western-nebraska-casino-possible-as-plans-announced-for-a-racing-license-in-ogallala/">plans</a>&nbsp;this summer to transfer its racing license.&nbsp;

State law allows Hastings a one-time move of its license because the community was one of six “original” racetrack locations. The law stipulates the move must be to a Nebraska county that does not have a racetrack, in this case, from Adams County to Keith County.

Brian Jorde, a representative for the Hastings company, said a study is required to see whether the move could have any detrimental effects, such as concentrated or “undue” competition.

“We don’t believe there’s any reasonable argument that it can, in any way, be detrimental by moving that far away into a brand new market and giving the folks in western Nebraska —&nbsp;who often get passed over —&nbsp;an opportunity to be a part of something so exciting,” Jorde told the commission.

Hastings Exposition and Racing had tried for a couple of years to set up a racino in Hastings, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for a location that would have been 17 to 20 miles from the racino in Grand Island.

Instead, the new racetrack is planned for nearly 200 miles away while laying the future groundwork for the Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack, a 174-acre site that Jorde said would exist on the southwest corner of I-80 and Highway 26, the main intersection in Ogallala.

Mary Wilson, executive director for Keith County Area Development in Keith County, noted the new location is planned to be a “tourism destination” with its closeness to Lake McConaughy and the states of Wyoming and Colorado.

Elite Casino Resorts, which owns the Grand Island Casino Resort, plans to partner with the Hastings company for the new facility.

“We think this is the definition of a win-win,” Jorde said.

<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/racino-bill-advances-with-initial-limit-at-six-racetracks/">Other Nebraska communities</a>&nbsp;such as Kimball, Gering, North Platte, Norfolk and Bellevue have expressed interest in more racinos.&nbsp;

State Sen. Mike Jacobson of North Platte told the board at its meeting that his community still intends to submit an application after required studies of socio-economic impacts and statewide market conditions.

The commission also approved a new first in gambling for the Cornhusker State: table games at the Grand Island Casino Resort.

This is the first time the commission has approved table games. Sharon Haselhoff, the regional vice president for Elite Casino Resorts, noted that eight were ready to launch as early as the Friday dinner hour, pending final commission approval.

Commissioners approved five blackjack tables, one roulette, one Texas hold ’em and one craps table as well as 46 more slot machines for Grand Island, bringing the total number of machines to 337.

Tom Sage, the commission’s executive director, said he’d be on the road to Grand Island for one final walkthrough as soon as the commission adjourned, a final step before the new games went live.

Dennis Lee, the commission’s chair, said it was fitting that Grand Island was the first for tabletop games given its decades-long history in racing.

“It’s appropriate, I think, that Grand Island be the first to let people roll the dice and spin the ball,” Lee said.

The North Platte Community College Theater Department and North Platte Community Playhouse will host auditions for “Steel Magnolias” next month.

Six women ages 18-70 are needed for the roles. No previous acting experience is required.

“Steel Magnolias,” is a comedy-drama about a group of Southern women who bond over life’s triumphs and tragedies. Scenes revolve around a beauty parlor, where the ladies have standing Saturday appointments – more for gossiping and solving problems than for beautification purposes.

The play premiered off-Broadway in 1987 and was subsequently adapted into a movie starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah in 1989.

Auditions will be Sept. 12 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., and Sept. 13 in the Canteen Room of the playhouse.

Auditionees can arrive between 6-8 p.m. at either location. Each audition is expected to take approximately 20 minutes.

The production dates are Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 17-19 with showtimes of 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.&nbsp;

Contestants from 14 colleges in five states will vie for championship buckles in saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, team roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, goat tying and barrel racing.

Sanctioned by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, the Stampede is a qualifying event, meaning any points contestants earn at the competition will count toward an end-of-year shot at the College National Finals Rodeo.

Stock will be provided by Phillips Rodeo Company and Family based out of Elwood, and the announcer will be Caleb Dorenkamp, of Holly, Colo.

MPCC Stampede to take over Wild West Arena Sept. 14-16

(AP) — Planned Parenthood of the Heartland has appealed a judge's ruling that left a new Nebraska law intact that bans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/transgender-health-care-abortion-ban-nebraska-1a88067bf403559116df7c09e004e472">abortions</a>&nbsp;after 12 weeks of pregnancy and imposes restrictions on gender-affirming surgery.

Planned Parenthood filed its appeal Friday with help from the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, one week after a judge sided with the state and rejected the challenge to the law&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trans-health-abortion-laws-nebraska-3bd01980e0df33bc89afc3d5b0c11f93">Nebraska lawmakers approved</a>&nbsp;earlier this year.

The lawsuit had argued that the law violated a Nebraska constitutional rule that bills cannot contain more than one subject, but the judge disagreed. Lawmakers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-transgender-ban-nebraska-filibuster-94f1e637e2d9034f608c793bf929e888">added the abortion ban</a>&nbsp;to an existing bill dealing with gender-related care.

The law outlaws abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother. As of Oct. 1, it also will prevent people under 19 from receiving gender-affirming surgery and restricts the use of hormone treatments and puberty blockers for minors.

Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, said her organization “will never stop fighting for the reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy and health of our Nebraska communities.”

Richardson said Planned Parenthood will continue to provide abortions to women up to the 12th week of pregnancy in compliance with state law, and it will work with anyone who needs care later in pregnancy to find treatment in another state.

The 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car, a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport, will be part of the attractions at the Nebraska State Fair.

The Le Mans will be on display from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 25 through Sept. 3 and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 4 inside the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center at Fonner Park.&nbsp;The public will have the opportunity to view and purchase tickets for the car at those time

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in NPCC’s Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

Among the Pontiac’s many features are a LQ4 6.0L engine,&nbsp;4L80 transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, a Kilduff Shifter and Ford nine-inch, clutch-style Eaton Posi differential.

The car is painted in PPG Lightning Blue, boasts a custom hood and front valance and comes with air conditioning and cruise control amenities.

The Le Mans will tour the state throughout the summer, making appearances at car shows, parades and cruise night events. A schedule is posted at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php</a>.&nbsp;

A total of 10,000 raffle tickets will be offered at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds will be used for scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

NPCC raffle car to join state fair attractions   

Students studying Emergency Medical Services at Mid-Plains Community College will soon be able to practice treating patients in an ambulance – long before they ever set out on the road.

<a>A SimLeader ambulance box has arrived at the college’s South Campus in North Platte. Purchased from Echo Healthcare, the simulator will allow students to train in a safe and controlled environment prior to experiencing an on-the-job emergency.</a>

“The ambulance simulator is one of a kind,” said Alex McConnell, EMS and CPR coordinator.&nbsp; “Students will be able to familiarize themselves with the feel and equipment of a life-size ambulance all while getting the benefit of road noise and movement.”&nbsp;

Some of the simulator’s many features include:

“The ambulance box is fully functioning, so instead of simulating suction or oxygen application, students will be flipping switches and equipment will turn on so that they know it is working and how that feels,” said McConnell.

Monitors covering the windows can depict familiar scenes.&nbsp;

“We can take a camera, record a drive from the college to the hospital and then play that footage on the monitors,” McConnell said. “The students will then see all of the local scenery as if they were actually driving past it.”

The ambulance box also doubles as a driving simulator, allowing students to feel turns, bumps and speed changes in real time and prepare for radical weather, poor road conditions and an array of traffic scenarios.

Those “driving” the simulator will gain a better understanding of how certain actions affect EMS providers in the back.

“The scenarios we can run are endless,” said McConnell.&nbsp;“It is our hope that we can not only train new students but also encourage departments to come in, train with us and utilize the driving simulator for a portion of their EVOC training.&nbsp;Anytime we can give our students and providers real-life experience and put them in stressful situations where we can teach and debrief without having a real patient’s life in the balance is of huge benefit.&nbsp;The more they can practice, the better they will perform, and hopefully the calmer and more collected they will feel during actual emergencies.”

The ambulance box will be housed in the newly expanded area of MPCC’s Health and Science Center. EMS students will be tasked with cleaning it so they can be prepared to keep themselves and others safe on calls.

The total cost of the simulator was $290,000. Of that, $25,000 was donated by Priority Medical and $64,000 came from a grant from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Emergency Medical Services Program.

That funding was part of a $1 million grant awarded to Nebraska to be used for EMS training agencies across the state. MPCC was selected as one of the recipients because of its central location and ability to serve a large population of students.

Training on the simulator is expected to begin this fall.

 </ul>“The ambulance box is fully functioning, so instead of simulating suction or oxygen application, students will be flipping switches and equipment will turn on so that they know it is working and how that feels,” said McConnell.Monitors covering the windows can depict familiar scenes.&nbsp;“We can take a camera, record a drive from the college to the hospital and then play that footage on the monitors,” McConnell said. “The students will then see all of the local scenery as if they were actually driving past it.”The ambulance box also doubles as a driving simulator, allowing students to feel turns, bumps and speed changes in real time and prepare for radical weather, poor road conditions and an array of traffic scenarios.Those “driving” the simulator will gain a better understanding of how certain actions affect EMS providers in the back.“The scenarios we can run are endless,” said McConnell.&nbsp;“It is our hope that we can not only train new students but also encourage departments to come in, train with us and utilize the driving simulator for a portion of their EVOC training.&nbsp;Anytime we can give our students and providers real-life experience and put them in stressful situations where we can teach and debrief without having a real patient’s life in the balance is of huge benefit.&nbsp;The more they can practice, the better they will perform, and hopefully the calmer and more collected they will feel during actual emergencies.”The ambulance box will be housed in the newly expanded area of MPCC’s Health and Science Center. EMS students will be tasked with cleaning it so they can be prepared to keep themselves and others safe on calls.The total cost of the simulator was $290,000. Of that, $25,000 was donated by Priority Medical and $64,000 came from a grant from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Emergency Medical Services Program.That funding was part of a $1 million grant awarded to Nebraska to be used for EMS training agencies across the state. On August 18, 2023, at approximately 8:24 a.m. the Custer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 3-vehicle accident on Nebraska Highway 2 near the Road 812 intersection, 1.5 miles southeast of Anselmo.  

A John Deere tractor, driven by a 21-year-old Merna, NE male, was traveling east on Highway 2.  A 1997 Freightliner semi, pulling a livestock trailer, driven by a 30-year-old Arapahoe, NE male, was traveling east on Highway 2, behind the tractor.  The semi struck the John Deere tractor's left rear, causing the semi to skid across the roadway and tip over onto the passenger side.  The semi came to rest in the east ditch with the trailer on the highway.  The tractor came to rest on the side of the highway.  

A 2020 Ford Pickup was traveling west on Highway 2.  The driver was unable to avoid the trailer in the roadway and struck it with the front of the pickup.

All three drivers were transported to the Jennie Melham Hospital.  The driver of the Ford pickup was pronounced dead at the hospital.  

The deceased driver of the Ford Pickup was wearing a seatbelt and airbags deployed.  The driver of the tractor was not seat belted, seat belt use by the semi driver is unknown.  There were no passengers in the vehicles.  

The semi had cattle in the trailer, and a number of the cattle died as a result of the accident.

The Nebraska State Patrol assisted with the investigation.  Broken Bow, Merna and Anselmo Fire and Rescue, Hunter’s Towing, Trumbull Towing, Nebraska Department of Roads, and numerous citizens assisted with the accident scene.  

The names of the drivers are being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful and the&nbsp;North Platte Bulletin&nbsp;held a competition to honor households and businesses that have beautiful landscapes.&nbsp; Prize sponsors for the competition include North Platte Hardware and Coldwell Banker Preferred Group.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nominations were taken during the past month. The judges collectively scored 22 yards to determine the winners.&nbsp;

The rankings were based on curb appeal, balance and color, sustainability, creativity, and maintenance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City of North Platte will begin overlaying the Transfer Station Road today and tomorrow

On August 16, 2023, around 5:50 p.m. the Lincoln County Dispatch Center received a call of suspicious circumstances at a residence in Hershey, NE.   Deputies responded and spoke with the homeowner.  The homeowner advised about a half an hour prior to calling a white vehicle pulled up in her driveway and was honking the horn. 

  The vehicle was described as a newer white Cadillac Escalade or Chevrolet Suburban.   A middle eastern or Indian women came to the door and knocked.  The resident answered and the female grabbed her hand, in broken English asked her to speak with her husband.

  The owner refused and went back in her residence and retrieved a pistol and put it in her pocket.   She again met with the female who attempted to pull her by the hand toward the vehicle to speak with her husband.  The homeowner did go speak with the husband near the passenger door.   The male advised he wanted to buy some chickens from the homeowner, was very determined and showed her some money. 

  The homeowner said her chickens were not for sale, but he persisted.  The male then got out of the driver’s seat of the vehicle and began to walk around the vehicle toward the homeowner.  The homeowner noticed there was a large machete in the front seat of the vehicle.   The homeowner backed up and drew her pistol from her pocket. 

  The male observed the pistol and in broken English said, “We Leave!!!”.   A large amount of on and off duty Deputies and Nebraska State Troopers responded to the area searching for the vehicle.  The homeowner advised the vehicle left westbound on Highway 30 from Hershey.  After several hours the vehicle was not found and assumed to be out of the area. 

  Because of the cultural and language issues this may have been an entirely innocent incident.  However, the Sheriff’s Office applauds the female homeowner for using her 2nd Amendment Right to protect herself, family, and property.&nbsp;&nbsp;
