SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –&nbsp;The Nebraska Cornhuskers are returning to the Sanford Pentagon in 2023 for a non-conference matchup with the Oregon State Beavers on Nov. 18.

Ticket information and game time will be announced later.

“There is nothing quite like the atmosphere in the Sanford Pentagon when two teams from major conferences face off on Heritage Court,” said Jesse Smith, vice president of Sanford Sports. “We are thrilled to welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers back to Sioux Falls and are equally as excited to showcase our venue to Oregon State and its fans for the first time.”

This is the second time Nebraska will play at the Sanford Pentagon. On Dec. 16, 2018, the No. 25 Huskers defeated Oklahoma State 79-56. A member of the Big Ten Conference, Nebraska is coming off a 16-16 season, with a signature win on the road against eventual Elite Eight participant, No. 7 Creighton. Head coach Fred Hoiberg enters his fifth season at Nebraska.

Nebraska returns four players who started at least 12 games during the 2022-23 season. The Huskers finished on a high note last season, winning six of their final eight regular-season games, including three victories over teams that played in the NCAA Tournament.

“Playing at the Sanford Pentagon against Oregon State is a great opportunity for our basketball team,” Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We are thankful to Sanford Sports for including the University of Nebraska in this game for a second time. We have a lot of alumni in the Sioux Falls area, so I expect there to be a lot of red and white in the crowd in November which will help make for a phenomenal atmosphere for a college basketball game.”

This is the first trip to Heritage Court for Oregon State, members of the Pac 12 Conference. The Beavers finished the 2022-23 season with an 11-21 record. Head coach Wayne Tinkle enters his tenth season as head coach at Oregon State.

Tinkle coached one of the youngest teams in the nation in 2022-23, as over 50 percent of the teams’ points came from freshmen - one of three Power 5 teams to do so. Jordan Pope earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors, and Pope joined Tyler Bilodeau and Michael Rataj in scoring over six points per game, making Oregon State one of seven teams in the nation to have a trio of freshmen reach that mark.

“We’re honored to have the opportunity to play in the tradition-rich Sanford Pentagon,” said Oregon State Head Coach Wayne Tinkle. “Games at the Pentagon have become key single-game pre-season events over the past 10 years. Sanford is an incredible partner and the Pentagon is an unbelievable facility bred for hoops. Throw in the total support of the Sioux Falls community and this will prove to be a valuable experience for our program.”

This year’s contest will mark the 11th&nbsp;all-time meeting between Oregon State and Nebraska and the first since the 2009-10 campaign. The Beavers hold a 6-4 edge in the series.

Since opening in 2013, the Sanford Pentagon has hosted more than 80 Division I men’s and women’s college basketball games. Last December, the Pentagon hosted a rematch of the 2021 men’s national championship game between No. 6 Baylor and No. 14 Gonzaga. Two weeks later, defending women’s national champions and No. 1 ranked South Carolina defeated South Dakota State on Heritage Court.

The show starts at 7pm at the Ogallala Performing Arts Center at the High School. Admission is $15 for adults or $7 for students. ORAC members get in free with your membership card. Derek Beck spoke with Barb Jeffries from the Eagle Media studios in Ogallala about the concert, and other things on the horizon for the Ogallala Regional Arts Council.

Ogallala Regional Arts Council to hold final show of season Sunday

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - North Platte Giving Day shatters giving record.&nbsp; In 2022, Giving Day generated over $370,000 in donations for almost 70 Lincoln County non-profits. Yesterday, the 10 day event concluded with over $510,000 in donations to 80 Lincoln County non-profits. In-person donations will still be added to this total.

Early giving began on Wednesday, April 26. Eric Seacrest, Executive Director of Mid Nebraska Community Foundation told the POST that over $116,000 in early giving had been donated as of Monday morning. Over $200,000 in matching donations helped push the total over a half million dollars.&nbsp;

North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust collected the most donations with $135,768. The NPCSET plans to rebuild their parking lot in front of North Platte St. Pat's High School with the help of the Giving Day contributions.

The Lincoln County Ag Society earned the second most donations with $59,550. The money donated to the fairgrounds will go towards fundraising efforts to erect a new multipurpose building that would host indoor barrel racing, expo's and classrooms.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - The North Platte City Council held their regular May meeting on Tuesday night. Among the topics was annexation. Chief Industries which purchased property north of the North Platte Community College north campus recently would like the city to annex that land including a portion of land along the canal that currently belongs to the county. Kelliher also spoke about public hearing that was held in second reading for the tax refinance process for the second phase of the Lakeview apartments on west A street. The owners of the apartments are looking at adding 120 more units.&nbsp;

The council did approve two stop signs that will be placed at 17th Stree and Cody near the Buffalo School. Finally the Mayor spoke about the city creating a U-shaped paving, sewer and water district in the Industrial Park near where the Cabela's Call Center was located. The reason for the new U-shaped road that will come back to State Farm road is to have shovel-ready streets in place for future development in the area.

City of North Platte planning to anex more property along South Platte River, Recap of Tuesday night's North Platte City Council Meeting

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - A grant from Mid Nebraska Community Foundation offered the Prairie Arts Center a chance to purchase a new sculpture for their outdoor sculpture garden.  The "Fire Within"  was created by Wayne artist Mike Fluent for the SWAN or Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska Project. 

  The communities of Norfolk and Grand Island are part of the SWAN project that bring outdoor art to residents and visitors through a revolving sculpture walk. PAC is thrilled to add this piece to their collection, thanks to Mid Nebraska Community Foundation.  Our goal is to add art that inspires, beautifies and entertains the community and Fire Within is a great example of that.  You can see Fire Within at PAC located at 416 N. Jeffers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Taylor Brown, 34, formerly of McCook, Nebraska, and Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced today in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.&nbsp; Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Brown to 63 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; After his release from prison, he will begin a five-year term of supervised release.

From February 2019, through May 2019, law enforcement utilized a confidential informant to purchase methamphetamine from Tina Smith and Taylor Brown for a total of 28 grams.&nbsp; In addition, cooperating witnesses indicated that they purchased four to five ounces from Brown.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Smith was sentenced to 57 months’ imprisonment followed by a three-year term of supervised release.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the McCook Police Department.

🎙️ Record day expected Wednesday for North Platte Giving Day

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains Community College&nbsp;Rodeo Team was on fire over the weekend in Spearfish, S.D. Members captured multiple Top 5 finishes in a doubleheader at Black Hills State University’s Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede Thursday through Saturday.

MPCC had the top men’s team and was second in the women’s team standings at the conclusion of the first rodeo. Nick Rettinger and Maggie Underhill led the onslaught.

Rettinger took the men’s all-around championship after placing second in the tie-down roping, fourth in the team roping and sixth in the steer wrestling. Underhill won the barrel racing.

Also placing in the Top 10 were steer wrestlers Dalton Kunkee and Rex Day, who ended up fifth and sixth, respectively.

Madison McGee was seventh in the breakaway roping, and Matthew Miller was eighth in the tie-down roping.

Kaden Wooters won the steer wrestling in the second rodeo. He was 10th in the tie-down roping – behind Rettinger, who finished eighth.

McGee and Conner Schutz paired up for a fourth-place ranking in the team roping. Rettinger also placed seventh in that event.

Underhill came in ninth, and Raina Swanson was 11th in the barrel racing.

“I’m very proud of the individual championships and placings this weekend,” said Wyatt Clark, MPCC Rodeo Team timed events coach. “I’m looking forward to competing back in Nebraska and am expecting a strong finish for the year.”

The team heads into the final week of practice this week, which will culminate in the last rodeo of the season – the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Rodeo Friday and Saturday.

MPCC Rodeo Team sets the bar high in Spearfish

NORTH PLATTE – Local event organizers continue to work hard to create fun and exciting events in North Platte that bring in visitors and contribute to the economic vitality of our community in addition to giving locals and visitors options for unique activities.Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to facilitate the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded by lodging taxes collected and remitted by lodging properties from overnight stays in Lincoln County.

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved grant funding at the monthly meeting held on April 26, 2023. The applications totaled $88,458.37 in requests and a total of $53,383 was awarded.

• Approved $500 in promotional funding for the Sutherland Rodeo. The Sutherland fourth of July celebration and rodeo starts on July 1st and runs through July 4th. It includes rodeo slack, an allgirls roping competition, two rodeo performances, and a Jr. Rodeo Queen contest. Year after year the Sutherland Rodeo continues to provide family entertainment for locals and visitors alike.

• Approved $700 in incentive funding for the Lincoln County High School Rodeo. The Lincoln County High School Rodeo is held annually at the Wild West Arena. High school contestants from across the state compete in fourteen events to earn points that qualify them for State and National Finals Rodeos. Contestants and their families travel to North Platte from across the state of Nebraska with some even coming from Colorado and Wyoming. This year’s rodeo will be on September 16th and 17th.

• Approved $500 in incentive funding for Brady Days. The Village of Brady will hold their annual celebration August 4th through the 6th. It will include a parade, BBQ, volleyball, basketball, softball, and cornhole tournaments, turtle races, a car show, and family night. Many alumni return with their families or bring friends to our area to enjoy the festivities.

• Approved $4,983 in promotional funding to the Lincoln County Historical Museum. The LincolnCounty Historical Museum is truly a local treasure, proven by the fact that visitation has grown to approximately 21,000 visitors annually under the curatorship of Jim Griffin. Promoting the museum is pivotal to its continued success. The museum will be open from May 1st to September 30th and will also host the annual Heritage Festival on June 10th and 11th, Old Fashioned Corn Feed on August 5th, Pancake Breakfast on September 23rd, and Christmas Village during the month of December.

• Approved $2,000 in promotional funding to Pals Brewing Company for their Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival. The 5th annual Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival will be held at Pals Brewing on September 9th. Attendees will sample beer, wine, and spirits from breweries around Nebraska. This event increases craft beer awareness in the western portion of the state, raises money for the Nebraska Craft Brewers Guild, and brings visitors to North Platte for the weekend.

• Approved $1,000 in promotional funding for the Homestead Pumpkin Patch. The Homestead Pumpkin Patch continues to provide family fun for locals, the surrounding communities, and visitors alike. They will be hosting a Flower Bazaar July 29th and 30th as well as August 5th and 6th. Their fall festivities, which will feature another new attraction this year, will be back from late September through the month of October.

• Approved $5,000 in promotional funding to the Ag Society for their concert during the Lincoln County Fair. Easton Corbin and Jason Mayer will be performing live at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds on July 28th. Easton is a well know county music singer and his performance will draw in many music fans from surrounding areas to enjoy not just his performance but the Lincoln County Fair. Jason Mayer is from Kearney and has a strong following throughout the state. This show will be fun for attendees of all ages and will hopefully be the start of bringing live music back to the Lincoln County Fair annually.

• Approved $500 in promotional funding for Music on the Bricks. Music on the Bricks has become a North Platte staple since it began in 2017. The event not only showcases the beautiful downtown Canteen District but also highlights area talent by giving them a chance to perform for a large crowd. There are also vendors, food, and kids’ activities which make it a great time for the entire family. Visitors like to experience destinations by engaging with the locals and seeing what events they gravitate towards. The spring Music on the Bricks event will be held on May 20th with the larger, two-day Music on the Bricks event coming August 11th and 12th.

• Approved $15,000 in promotional funding for Family 1st Productions, Fijack Entertainment, and Dean Shaffer Productions for their collaborative live entertainment series Party ‘N’ Platte. These three companies are coming together to bring live music and entertainment events to North Platte that will be enjoyed by locals and bring in visitors. Hosting events that appeal to live entertainment enthusiasts year-round will be a great asset to our community.

• Approved $6,600 in funding for North Platte Pow Wow. The North Platte Pow Wow is a cultural dancing and singing celebration featuring Native American participants. Along with the Pow Wow this event includes a PTSD Awareness Walk, a tipi raising, a tribute to our veterans, a Quilts of Valor presentation, and a basketball tournament. This will all be happening July 7th through the 9th and will primarily take place at Buffalo Bill State Historical Park. Annually, 650-1,000 attendees and participants come to the North Platte Pow Wow. 95% of the participants are from out of state and well over half of the spectators are from outside of North Platte. Attendees and participants have grown to enjoy the North Platte Pow Wow over the past three years and the numbers are expected to grow again for the fourth annual showcase.

• Approved $3,000 in funding for Platte River Cruise Night. Platte River Cruise has grown from a single day event to a three day celebration that offers not only a car show and cruise, but also rockabilly competitions, a kids’ cruise, burnouts, a 4x4 off road course, a stunt bike exhibition, a loud exhaust contest, live music, a firework show, vendors and food trucks, and appearances from celebrities like Steve Darnell from Vegas Ratrods and Ryan Evans from Counting Cars who will be attending the 2023 event. This year Platte River Cruise Night is scheduled for July 7th through the 9th. This event continues to bring car enthusiasts to our area while also providing a weekend of fun for locals.

• Approved $7,100 in funding for Viva North Platte. This new event will be a two-day Hispanic cultural celebration that will educate on the history and celebrate the traditions of the Hispanic culture. There will be Native dancers, a mariachi band, a queen/princess coronation, boxing matches, pinatas, food, fruit, and craft vendors, and more. This event will help welcome newcomers by providing a space where their traditions are celebrated as well as educating existing community members and bringing in visitors and guests. The first Viva North Platte will be held at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds on September 15th and 16th.

• Approved $3,000 sports incentive funding for the Rail Yard Ringer Open Horseshoe Tournament. The Rail Yard Ringer is a regional/national horseshoe tournament that will be held August 4th through the 6th which is during the local Rail Days Celebration. The event will start off with a fun tournament on Friday with the larger competition being on Saturday and Sunday. Horseshoe pitches from across Nebraska, surrounding states, and across the nation will travel to participate in this tournament at Cody Park.

• Approved $3,500 in incentive funding for the North Platte Canteen Festival. The North Platte Canteen Festival celebrates and honors the North Platte World War II Canteen which served more than six million soldiers passing through. Now in its third year, the Canteen Festival is becoming a local favorite, and it offers visitors a chance to learn about our rich history. The 2023 festival will include a Fall Vendor and Art Show in the downtown Canteen District from 10:00am-4:00pm on September 23rd. During the Fall Market &amp; Art Show there will be performances by the Flatrock Irregulars who will play all 1940’s hits as well as Jody Ingalls from Encore History who will take attendees on an unforgettable journey through the WWII years with iconic songs of the day performed in character by some of the era’s favorite voices. On September 24th there will be a Canteen inspired performance at the North Platte Community Playhouse.

The next round of funding is now open, with a July 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in October, November, and December 2023. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting scheduled for July 26, 2023. Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is encouraged to contact the Visitors Bureau at 308-532-4729 and discuss their project with a staff member.

Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded solely through the lodging taxes that are collected and remitted for overnight stays by lodging properties in Lincoln County. The spring Music on the Bricks event will be held on May 20th with the larger, two-day Music on the Bricks event coming August 11th and 12th.• Approved $15,000 in promotional funding for Family 1st Productions, Fijack Entertainment, and Dean Shaffer Productions for their collaborative live entertainment series Party ‘N’ Platte. These three companies are coming together to bring live music and entertainment events to North Platte that will be enjoyed by locals and bring in visitors. Hosting events that appeal to live entertainment enthusiasts year-round will be a great asset to our community.• Approved $6,600 in funding for North Platte Pow Wow. The North Platte Pow Wow is a cultural dancing and singing celebration featuring Native American participants. Along with the Pow Wow this event includes a PTSD Awareness Walk, a tipi raising, a tribute to our veterans, a Quilts of Valor presentation, and a basketball tournament. This will all be happening July 7th through the 9th and will primarily take place at Buffalo Bill State Historical Park. Annually, 650-1,000 attendees and participants come to the North Platte Pow Wow. 95% of the participants are from out of state and well over half of the spectators are from outside of North Platte. Attendees and participants have grown to enjoy the North Platte Pow Wow over the past three years and the numbers are expected to grow again for the fourth annual showcase.• Approved $3,000 in funding for Platte River Cruise Night. Platte River Cruise has grown from a single day event to a three day celebration that offers not only a car show and cruise, but also rockabilly competitions, a kids’ cruise, burnouts, a 4x4 off road course, a stunt bike exhibition, a loud exhaust contest, live music, a firework show, vendors and food trucks, and appearances from celebrities like Steve Darnell from Vegas Ratrods and Ryan Evans from Counting Cars who will be attending the 2023 event. This year Platte River Cruise Night is scheduled for July 7th through the 9th. This event continues to bring car enthusiasts to our area while also providing a weekend of fun for locals.• Approved $7,100 in funding for Viva North Platte. This new event will be a two-day Hispanic cultural celebration that will educate on the history and celebrate the traditions of the Hispanic culture. There will be Native dancers, a mariachi band, a queen/princess coronation, boxing matches, pinatas, food, fruit, and craft vendors, and more. This event will help welcome newcomers by providing a space where their traditions are celebrated as well as educating existing community members and bringing in visitors and guests. The first Viva North Platte will be held at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds on September 15th and 16th.• Approved $3,000 sports incentive funding for the Rail Yard Ringer Open Horseshoe Tournament. The Rail Yard Ringer is a regional/national horseshoe tournament that will be held August 4th through the 6th which is during the local Rail Days Celebration. The event will start off with a fun tournament on Friday with the larger competition being on Saturday and Sunday. Horseshoe pitches from across Nebraska, surrounding states, and across the nation will travel to participate in this tournament at Cody Park.• Approved $3,500 in incentive funding for the North Platte Canteen Festival. The North Platte Canteen Festival celebrates and honors the North Platte World War II Canteen which served more than six million soldiers passing through. Now in its third year, the Canteen Festival is becoming a local favorite, and it offers visitors a chance to learn about our rich history. The 2023 festival will include a Fall Vendor and Art Show in the downtown Canteen District from 10:00am-4:00pm on September 23rd. During the Fall Market &amp; Art Show there will be performances by the Flatrock Irregulars who will play all 1940’s hits as well as Jody Ingalls from Encore History who will take attendees on an unforgettable journey through the WWII years with iconic songs of the day performed in character by some of the era’s favorite voices. On September 24th there will be a Canteen inspired performance at the North Platte Community Playhouse.The next round of funding is now open, with a July 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in October, November, and December 2023. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting scheduled for July 26, 2023. Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is encouraged to contact the Visitors Bureau at 308-532-4729 and discuss their project with a staff member.Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded solely through the lodging taxes that are collected and remitted for overnight stays by lodging properties in Lincoln County. It is thanks to the efforts of the lodging property partners located within the county that funds are available to attract more visitors, which have a significant impact on the economic well-being of our Lincoln County communities.

NORTH PLATTE&nbsp; - Although Landon Tadich&nbsp;wasn’t&nbsp;raised on a farm or ranch,&nbsp;he’s&nbsp;worked alongside the best and brightest in the livestock industry and is wrapping up his master’s in beef reproductive physiology this spring at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s&nbsp;<a href="https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/westcentral/" target="_blank">West Central Research, Extension and Education Center</a>&nbsp;in North Platte.&nbsp;

A native of rural Perry, Ga., Tadich was first introduced to agriculture in 6th&nbsp;grade and&nbsp;there’s&nbsp;no denying that introduction set the stage for his future. The Perry High School FFA program revealed the many intricacies of agriculture and livestock production&nbsp;to him.&nbsp;From that point on, Tadich was hooked and says he completed&nbsp;nearly every&nbsp;career development experience&nbsp;available to him,&nbsp;whether that be livestock judging, wildlife or&nbsp;poultry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

From there, his FFA experience and love of livestock showing and judging only grew. His constant contact with livestock prompted him to set his eyes on one day becoming a veterinarian, a way of solidifying a future working with livestock.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tadich dove&nbsp;deeper&nbsp;into the livestock realm after a stint on the livestock judging team at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.&nbsp;As a senior at the University of Georgia, Tadich was involved in undergraduate research in the beef reproductive realm, and&nbsp;ultimately influenced&nbsp;by graduate students in the animal science department working towards various careers in agriculture.&nbsp;

Tadich realized there were multiple opportunities for him within the livestock industry&nbsp;and pursued a graduate degree in&nbsp;<a href="https://animalscience.unl.edu/" target="_blank">Nebraska’s&nbsp;Animal Science</a>&nbsp;Department&nbsp;to capitalize on all that the beef state had to offer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Nebraska Extension is well known, especially from a beef cattle standpoint,&nbsp;because Nebraska has a lot of cows,&nbsp;and my goal was to go somewhere where I would have the opportunity to learn from the best, have a&nbsp;hands-on&nbsp;experience, and play a role in applied research that producers appreciate.”&nbsp;

Nebraska has made all the difference for&nbsp;Tadich and&nbsp;allowed him&nbsp;to&nbsp;study heifer&nbsp;development&nbsp;and&nbsp;prenatal programming&nbsp;both at West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte, as well as the&nbsp;<a href="https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/westcentral/gudmundsen-sandhills-laboratory/" target="_blank">Gudmundsen&nbsp;Sandhills Laboratory</a>&nbsp;north of Whitman.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So&nbsp;far,&nbsp;he’s&nbsp;published one study&nbsp;tackling heifer development,&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://beef.unl.edu/2023-nebraska-beef-cattle-report" target="_blank">2023 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report</a>, with&nbsp;another&nbsp;to come.&nbsp;Staying true to his mission to set beef producers up for success, Tadich&nbsp;research&nbsp;tackles one of the greatest economic costs for cow/calf producers — heifer development.&nbsp;

The goal of this study was to investigate production systems that allow for lower inputs and cost&nbsp;for producers&nbsp;without compromising lifelong reproductive success.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“One enticing thing for me about Nebraska is the state is centered around the cattle industry, where people are doing this for their livelihood so they’re always wanting to do the most they can to raise the best cattle,” said Tadich.&nbsp;

Tadich currently serves as&nbsp;the University of Nebraska—Lincoln’s&nbsp;<a href="https://animalscience.unl.edu/asgsa" target="_blank">animal science graduate student association</a>&nbsp;vice president. In 2022 he received theDeutscher Fellowship in Beef Cattle Reproductive Physiology from the Agricultural Research Division Advisory Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His&nbsp;three semesters&nbsp;prior&nbsp;to&nbsp;working at West Central were spent on Nebraska’s East Campus where he judged and officiated campus contests, served as a TA for Nebraska’s artificial insemination class and several undergraduate classes and labs, as well as gaining experience with extension&nbsp;— checking&nbsp;all of&nbsp;the boxes he had hoped for when deciding that Nebraska was his top choice.&nbsp;

With a network of relationships spanning from the southeastern&nbsp;United States to the Midwest and beyond, Tadich’s knack for building relationships in the agriculture community has been key in finding his place at Nebraska.&nbsp;

“People think of the livestock industry as being an animal driven industry,&nbsp;but&nbsp;people are&nbsp;the&nbsp;ones driving it, Tadich says.&nbsp;

“I have realized the value that&nbsp;different people bring to the table, and those connections are important.”&nbsp;

Tadich is&nbsp;advised by&nbsp;Dr. Rick Funston and co-advised by&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Andrea&nbsp;Cupp. He&nbsp;is set&nbsp;to defend his thesis&nbsp;this summer&nbsp;at the Nebraska’s Animal Science Department in Lincoln.&nbsp;Upon graduation, Tadich&nbsp;has plans to work in the livestock industry in a role centered around beef reproductive technologies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WASHINGTON DC - 2023’s first quarter economic report showed a decline in the U.S. GDP growth rate to 1.1 percent, making clear the lasting impact severe inflation has had on our economy. The damage done by reckless and wasteful spending emphasizes the importance of fiscal responsibility and pro-growth policies. This is especially true as our nation’s debt crisis remains unresolved and we barrel toward reaching our debt ceiling.

This week, the Limit, Save, Grow Act – a bill to bring some fiscal sanity back to Washington – passed the House with my support. While no one bill will solve our fiscal challenges, the Limit, Save, Grow Act is a starting point. I am hopeful the bill will lead to good faith negotiations between Congress and the president. In 2011, then Vice President Biden criticized those with a “my way or the highway approach” to these sorts of negotiations saying, “you have to compromise.” Unfortunately, President Biden has said he will not negotiate with Congress on the debt ceiling, an irresponsible approach that – if not abandoned – will lead to lasting damage to the full faith and credit of our country. Even Democrats are encouraging the president to come to the table to find a path forward.

The Limit, Save, Grow Act responsibly addresses the debt ceiling and includes significant savings—an estimated $3.6 trillion over 10 years – and puts our country on a better trajectory. We do this by cutting wasteful spending, reclaiming the IRS funding intended to increase audits on families and small businesses, stopping the Green New Deal, getting Americans back in the workforce, and ensuring we pay our debts without compromising our ability to compete and advance American energy dominance.

The American Enterprise Institute has estimated more than 40 percent of COVID relief payments ended up in fraudulent hands, and it concerns me greatly that more attention hasn’t been paid to these fraudulent payments. The Limit, Save, Grow Act would also reclaim unspent COVID relief funds, delivering on House Republicans’ commitment to a government that’s accountable.

With the support of many of my Midwestern colleagues, we were able to ensure the bill was amended to preserve important biofuels tax credits. Biofuels are an important part of our all-of-the-above energy portfolio and help lower costs for consumers and increase U.S. energy independence. Furthermore, the industry creates and supports good-paying jobs across the country, especially here in Nebraska.

The debt ceiling exists for a reason – as a lever to address spending – and addressing it requires good faith, bipartisan cooperation.

Washington must confront America’s debt crisis, and I’m grateful House Republicans were able to construct a plan to do so without compromising our ability to meet our financial obligations. The House is doing its part – now it’s time for President Biden to come to the negotiating table.

This is especially true as our nation’s debt crisis remains unresolved and we barrel toward reaching our debt ceiling.This week, the Limit, Save, Grow Act – a bill to bring some fiscal sanity back to Washington – passed the House with my support. While no one bill will solve our fiscal challenges, the Limit, Save, Grow Act is a starting point. I am hopeful the bill will lead to good faith negotiations between Congress and the president. In 2011, then Vice President Biden criticized those with a “my way or the highway approach” to these sorts of negotiations saying, “you have to compromise.” Unfortunately, President Biden has said he will not negotiate with Congress on the debt ceiling, an irresponsible approach that – if not abandoned – will lead to lasting damage to the full faith and credit of our country. Even Democrats are encouraging the president to come to the table to find a path forward.The Limit, Save, Grow Act responsibly addresses the debt ceiling and includes significant savings—an estimated $3.6 trillion over 10 years – and puts our country on a better trajectory. We do this by cutting wasteful spending, reclaiming the IRS funding intended to increase audits on families and small businesses, stopping the Green New Deal, getting Americans back in the workforce, and ensuring we pay our debts without compromising our ability to compete and advance American energy dominance.The American Enterprise Institute has estimated more than 40 percent of COVID relief payments ended up in fraudulent hands, and it concerns me greatly that more attention hasn’t been paid to these fraudulent payments. The Limit, Save, Grow Act would also reclaim unspent COVID relief funds, delivering on House Republicans’ commitment to a government that’s accountable.With the support of many of my Midwestern colleagues, we were able to ensure the bill was amended to preserve important biofuels tax credits. Biofuels are an important part of our all-of-the-above energy portfolio and help lower costs for consumers and increase U.S. energy independence. Furthermore, the industry creates and supports good-paying jobs across the country, especially here in Nebraska.The debt ceiling exists for a reason – as a lever to address spending – and addressing it requires good faith, bipartisan cooperation.Washington must confront America’s debt crisis, and I’m grateful House Republicans were able to construct a plan to do so without compromising our ability to meet our financial obligations. NORTH PLATTE — NebraskaLand Bank proudly celebrated the graduation of 54 promising students from
the prestigious NebraskaLand University Scholarship Program. The bank granted the deserving
graduates scholarships totaling $15,000 on April 24.


To be eligible for the $250 academic scholarship and a certificate of completion, each student had to
complete the mandatory attendance and coursework. In addition to successfully finish six classes to
graduate, and each student had to complete an essay, which was evaluated by a panel of judges from a
Bank committee.


State Sen. Mike Jacobson, president and CEO of NebraskaLand Bank, announced the winners and awarded
the top three essayists scholarships. Kelly Lammers, director of the Nebraska Department of Banking,
then bestowed the essay winners with a unique commemorative coin. These coins are a souvenir that
serves as an inspiring reminder that financial literacy requires unwavering dedication, perseverance, and
a vista of commitment to build something lasting.


The Bank committee declared the following essay contest winners:

the Bank, with approximately $89,000 given out since the program's inception in 2014-2015. Upcoming seniors
can apply in August for the 2023-24 school year session.

Families 1st Partnership invites the public to participate in greeting the Pony Express Riders during their stop in North Platte’s Cody Park at 1:30 p.m. May 18. 

The Pony Express Ride Across NE is a statewide effort to advocate for the funding of mental health programs through the Nebraska Legislature. As it’s been done for the past 16 years, the group of dedicated motorcycle riders start their journey at Scottsbluff, NE and make stops along the I-80 corridor to meet with local family support organizations. The purpose of the meetings is to pick up letters from the community that advocate for funding of mental health programs. Each community can plan a celebration to create awareness of the importance of addressing mental health needs to prevent lifelong emotional struggles. 

The May 18 celebration will include meeting the Pony Express Riders, signing letters of support and presenting those to the riders. After the letters are given to the riders, they travel on for other stops along the way with the ride culminating on Saturday May 20th in Lincoln at the State Capitol where the letters are handed to members of the Nebraska Unicameral.

Families 1st Partnership has operated as a non-profit organization since January 2019 and serves as the backbone organization for collaborative efforts in West Central/SW Nebraska. The focus of the collaborative partners is to prevent children and at risk youth from going into higher systems of care. With this goal in mind, Families 1st Partnership partners with other local agencies in their work and offers support in the form of trainings or financial assistance to the agency’s participants. In addition to financial support to stabilize families, there is sponsorship of parenting classes and family activities.

Pony Express ride will advocate for mental health funding

Mid-Plains Community College will begin its next set of Question, Persuade, Refer trainings next month.

QPR workshops are designed to help participants understand how to talk about suicide, identify the signs of suicidal thoughts and feel more comfortable engaging with someone who may be thinking about suicide.&nbsp;

The first training will be from noon to 1 p.m. (CDT) May 23 at the MPCC Broken Bow Campus, 2520 S. E St, in Broken Bow.

The MPCC Valentine Campus will also have a session May 23 from 5:30-7 p.m. (CDT) at 715 E. U.S. Highway 20, in Valentine.

A third class is planned for noon to 1:30 p.m. (MDT) June 1 at the MPCC Ogallala Campus, 512 E. B St. South, in Ogallala.

All sessions are free and open to the public. They will be led by Dr. Brian Obert, MPCC Dean of Student Life. Preregistration is appreciated, but not required.

NORTH PLATTE, NE - 308 BMX came to be in 2016 and had some mementom in North Platte to build a BMX facility that would host local, state and national events, then came 2020 and those plans came to a hault.

Now jump to 2022. The City of North Platte approached 308 BMX with an alternative location that would better suit the needs of the organization as well as utilize some under used city property. The 5 acre plot that currently is home to the Happy Hound dog retreat will be the new home of 308 BMX and the community pump track. The City will work on relocating the dog park to a portion of Cody Park across the road.

Derek Beck with the POST sat down with 308 BMX organizer Brandon McCook and talked about the planned BMX track and community pump track that is planned in North Platte. North Platte Giving Day is May 3 and with community giving support McCook thinks the organization will be close to their financial goal and able to break ground on the pump track soon if funding comes through.

308 BMX counting on Giving Day to help start community pump track

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/std/statistics/2021/default.htm">data</a>&nbsp;Tuesday showing how chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been accelerating, but doctors are hoping an old drug will help fight the sexually transmitted infections.

Experts believe STDs have been rising because of declining condom use, inadequate sex education and reduced testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Millions of Americans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/monkeypox-science-health-covid-epidemics-aaac64591251293f45c225d3fe963d0c">are infected</a>&nbsp;each year. Rates are highest in men who have sex with men, and among Black and Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.

“Sexually transmitted infections are an enormous, low-priority public health problem. And they’ve been a low-priority problem for decades, in spite of the fact that they are the most commonly reported kind of infectious disease,” said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., a retired health official who lectures at the Colorado School of Public Health.

To try to turn the tide, many doctors see promise in doxycycline, a cheap antibiotic that has been sold for more than 50 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is drafting recommendations for using it as a kind of morning-after pill for preventing STDs, said Dr. Leandro Mena, director of the agency's STD prevention division.

The drug is already used to treat a range of infections. A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2211934">study</a>&nbsp;published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine showed its potential to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

In the study, about 500 gay men, bisexual men and transgender women in Seattle and San Francisco with previous STD infections took one doxycycline pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Those who took the pills were about 90% less likely to get chlamydia, about 80% less likely to get syphilis, and more than 50% less likely to get gonorrhea compared with people who did not take the pills after sex, the researchers found.

The study was led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and built on a similar French study that saw promise in the idea.

“We do need new approaches, new innovations” to help bring sexually transmitted infections under control, said Dr. Philip Andrew Chan, who is consulting with the CDC on the doxycycline recommendations.

Mena, of the CDC, said there is no sign the STD trend is slowing.

Mississippi had the highest rate of gonorrhea cases, according to 2021 CDC data released Tuesday. Alaska saw a sharp increase in its chlamydia case rate that allowed it to overtake Mississippi at the top of that list. South Dakota had the highest rate of early-stage syphilis.

And Arizona had the tragic distinction of having the highest rate of cases in which infected moms pass syphilis on to their babies, potentially leading to death of the child or health problems like deafness and blindness.

Using an antibiotic to prevent these kinds of infections won’t “be a magic bullet. but it will be another tool,” said Chan, who teaches at Brown University and is chief medical officer of Open Door Health, a health center for gay, lesbian and transgender patients in Providence, Rhode Island.

Experts noted the CDC will have many factors to weigh as it develops the recommendations.

Among them: The drug can cause side effects like stomach problems and rashes after sun exposure. Some research has found it ineffective in heterosexual women. And widespread use of doxycycline as a preventive measure could contribute to mutations that make bacteria impervious to the drug, as has happened with antibiotics before.

Nevertheless, the San Francisco Department of Public Health in October became the first U.S. health department to issue guidance about doxycycline as an infection-prevention measure. And some other clinics have been been recommending the antibiotic to patients who may be at higher risk.

Derrick Woods-Morrow, a 33-year-old artist and an assistant professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, is an early adopter. Woods-Morrow, said he isn't a fan of condoms — they can break and sometimes people slip them off during sex. But he wants to stay healthy.

About a decade ago, he started taking an anti-viral medication before sex to protect himself from HIV infection. Five years ago, a doctor told him about research into whether doxycycline might protect people from other diseases.

“I thought it was probably in my best interest to protect myself, and my partners as well,” he said. He said it’s been a positive experience and that he hasn’t tested positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis while using it.

“I feel like it’s a tool to sort of take back the sexual freedoms that someone may have lost and to really enjoy sex and interactions with people with a piece of mind,” he said.

By Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/std/statistics/2021/default.htm">data</a>&nbsp;Tuesday showing how chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been accelerating, but doctors are hoping an old drug will help fight the sexually transmitted infections.Experts believe STDs have been rising because of declining condom use, inadequate sex education and reduced testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.Millions of Americans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/monkeypox-science-health-covid-epidemics-aaac64591251293f45c225d3fe963d0c">are infected</a>&nbsp;each year. Rates are highest in men who have sex with men, and among Black and Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.“Sexually transmitted infections are an enormous, low-priority public health problem. And they’ve been a low-priority problem for decades, in spite of the fact that they are the most commonly reported kind of infectious disease,” said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., a retired health official who lectures at the Colorado School of Public Health.To try to turn the tide, many doctors see promise in doxycycline, a cheap antibiotic that has been sold for more than 50 years.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is drafting recommendations for using it as a kind of morning-after pill for preventing STDs, said Dr. Leandro Mena, director of the agency's STD prevention division.The drug is already used to treat a range of infections. A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2211934">study</a>&nbsp;published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine showed its potential to prevent sexually transmitted infections.In the study, about 500 gay men, bisexual men and transgender women in Seattle and San Francisco with previous STD infections took one doxycycline pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Those who took the pills were about 90% less likely to get chlamydia, about 80% less likely to get syphilis, and more than 50% less likely to get gonorrhea compared with people who did not take the pills after sex, the researchers found.The study was led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and built on a similar French study that saw promise in the idea.“We do need new approaches, new innovations” to help bring sexually transmitted infections under control, said Dr. Philip Andrew Chan, who is consulting with the CDC on the doxycycline recommendations.Mena, of the CDC, said there is no sign the STD trend is slowing.Mississippi had the highest rate of gonorrhea cases, according to 2021 CDC data released Tuesday. Alaska saw a sharp increase in its chlamydia case rate that allowed it to overtake Mississippi at the top of that list. South Dakota had the highest rate of early-stage syphilis.And Arizona had the tragic distinction of having the highest rate of cases in which infected moms pass syphilis on to their babies, potentially leading to death of the child or health problems like deafness and blindness.Using an antibiotic to prevent these kinds of infections won’t “be a magic bullet. but it will be another tool,” said Chan, who teaches at Brown University and is chief medical officer of Open Door Health, a health center for gay, lesbian and transgender patients in Providence, Rhode Island.Experts noted the CDC will have many factors to weigh as it develops the recommendations.Among them: The drug can cause side effects like stomach problems and rashes after sun exposure. Some research has found it ineffective in heterosexual women. And widespread use of doxycycline as a preventive measure could contribute to mutations that make bacteria impervious to the drug, as has happened with antibiotics before.Nevertheless, the San Francisco Department of Public Health in October became the first U.S. health department to issue guidance about doxycycline as an infection-prevention measure. And some other clinics have been been recommending the antibiotic to patients who may be at higher risk.Derrick Woods-Morrow, a 33-year-old artist and an assistant professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, is an early adopter. Woods-Morrow, said he isn't a fan of condoms — they can break and sometimes people slip them off during sex. But he wants to stay healthy.About a decade ago, he started taking an anti-viral medication before sex to protect himself from HIV infection. Five years ago, a doctor told him about research into whether doxycycline might protect people from other diseases.“I thought it was probably in my best interest to protect myself, and my partners as well,” he said. He said it’s been a positive experience and that he hasn’t tested positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis while using it.“I feel like it’s a tool to sort of take back the sexual freedoms that someone may have lost and to really enjoy sex and interactions with people with a piece of mind,” he said.
