The National Weather Service in North Platte has issued a Flash Flood Warning for   Southwestern Garden County in the panhandle of Nebraska until 145 PM MDT.

At 846 AM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing  heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Intersection of Highway 27 and 9 Mile Road. This includes the following streams and drainages near North Platte River, Lost Creek and Rush Creek.

Flooding in Panhandle Friday morning

Visit North Platte has been awarding Improvement Fund Grants annually for the past seventeen years. Over this time, they have committed a total of $3.2 million to improving tourism facilities and services in Lincoln County. On August 23, 2023, the Visit North Platte Board of Directors met to review applications and hear presentations from four local&nbsp; organizations before awarding this funding for the eighteenth year. The day ended with the&nbsp; largest commitment for a single grant cycle in the organization’s history with $2.7 million being awarded. Not only does this bring the total amount of Improvement Fund Grants awarded from Visit North Platte to $5.9 million, but it also highlights the continued success of the travel and tourism industry in Lincoln County.&nbsp;

The money that flows into the Improvement Fund of Visit North Platte is generated entirely by a lodging tax on overnight lodging in Lincoln County. With ongoing efforts from Visit North Platte, tourism has seen success in North Platte and the surrounding area, which makes these funds a force for improving not only the services provided to visitors, but also for enhancing the quality of life for the residents of our communities.&nbsp;

The applications reviewed in this week’s meeting had a total of $2.75 million in requests for projects representing a total investment of $48.8 million in improvements to area historical and recreational facilities. Considering the history of the fund in Lincoln County, the Improvement Fund Grant guidelines, and the precedence set by seventeen years of previous&nbsp; recommendations and awards, the Board of Directors at Visit North Platte have chosen to&nbsp; provide the following funding:

• The Board of Directors approved $9,116 in funding for the Carriage House project at the Lincoln County Historical Museum. Jim Griffin presented an Improvement Fund Grant application to replace the roof on the historical Carriage House with a new wood shingle roof. The Lincoln County Historical Museum is truly a&nbsp; local treasure, proven by the fact that visitation has grown from 7,500 annually to&nbsp; more than 24,000 under the curatorship of Jim Griffin. Maintaining the condition and&nbsp; historical integrity of the artifacts, including the historical buildings, is an important part of attracting these visitors.&nbsp;

• The Board of Directors approved $56,000 in funding to Legion Baseball for the&nbsp; purchase and installation of a tie back system at Bill Wood Field. Currently, the&nbsp; backstop system at Bill Wood Field between home plate and the spectator area&nbsp;poses a safety risk for players and spectators alike. This dated metal structure is leaning due to wind damage and is not large enough to keep foul balls from entering the crowd. Replacing this outdated backstop with a new tie back system that is not only sturdier, but also significantly larger, will offer a safer experience to all baseball&nbsp; enthusiasts at Bill Wood Field.&nbsp;

• The Board of Directors approved $135,000 in funding to 308 BMX for the construction of an outdoor Bicycle Motocross Track in North Platte. Sports tourism is an ever-increasing segment of tourism in Lincoln County and having a&nbsp; Bicycle Motocross Track in our community will allow us to host multiple levels of BMX&nbsp; Races throughout the spring, summer, and even fall months. Visit North Platte has been working with 308 BMX since 2017 and is excited to see this project advance forward. Another component of the mission of Visit North Platte is assisting in the development of amenities such as this for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.&nbsp;

• The Board of Directors approved $2,500,000 in funding to the City of North Platte to help with the addition of six new regulation-sized basketball courts in the expansion of the North Platte Rec Center. Multi-use facilities can propel a community to economic prosperity by bringing in major sporting events that have a significant impact on the area economy. Having a facility with six regulation-sized&nbsp; basketball courts that can be used for a multitude of events such as basketball&nbsp; tournaments, volleyball tournaments, pickleball tournaments, and more is a huge asset to any community. It has been the vision of the Visit North Platte Board of Directors for many years to have a facility which will allow our community to host these types of sports tourism events year-round, especially during months with inclement weather. The board recognizes that the proposed investment in this facility will draw in positive economic impact by providing the space needed to host&nbsp; tournaments, while simultaneously benefiting North Platte residents. Funding will be distributed to the City of North Platte over a twenty-year period.&nbsp;

The next round of Improvement Grant Funding will open on January 1, 2024. April 1, 2024, is&nbsp; the deadline for intent to apply letters, with the application deadline being July 31, 2024.&nbsp; Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is encouraged to contact Lisa Burke,&nbsp; Executive Director of Visit North Platte, at 308-532-4729 to discuss their project.&nbsp;

It is very important to emphasize that the activities of Visit North Platte are funded solely&nbsp; through lodging tax revenue that consists of a 2% collection for promotion activities and a 2% collection for Improvement activities. No other public funds, not property taxes nor sales taxes, are administered by Visit North Platte. The Visit North Platte Board of Directors takes very seriously the responsibility entrusted to it to administer the funds received from lodging tax revenue. The traveling public who pays these taxes when they stay overnight in Lincoln County must have confidence that their investment is used to enhance their experience while in our communities. The Board of Directors believes that the above funding fulfills this trust and represents the greatest return on investment of the lodging tax revenue. North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath talked with Justin Petska about the upcoming Hershey Fall Festival this weekend in Hershey. &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The Hershey Fall Festival is set to begin this Friday and the event will run through Saturday. Even though Saturday is the main day for activities, there are all activities all weekend long. The activities are geared for everyone of all ages to enjoy.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The town and residents are ready to welcome guests into its community to celebrate its yearly fest. "We are ready to go, It's a big deal that we kind of built up all year and now the week is here, and we can't wait to get started and share a little bit of Hershey with everyone," said Justin Petska. &nbsp;

The parade will kick things off Saturday in downtown Hershey. With events all day, wrapping up the evening is the Muscadine Bloodline concert with guest Drew Philips. "The concert will wrap up the event that night," said Petska. "It's right on main street and feel free to bring your own chair." &nbsp;

Tumbleweed Smokehouse Cafe & RV officially open in Lemoyne 

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office works to protect Nebraskans, especially citizens who are vulnerable. Of particular concern to our office is the protection of our senior citizens.

We are grateful to our senior Nebraskans who have invested their time, energy, and resources into our state. Many have raised children, built families, and committed their time and effort into their communities. They have volunteered at churches and nonprofits, contributed to food banks, and helped the least among us. They have built businesses and created jobs that make Nebraska prosperous.

The threats and vulnerabilities for seniors are real. Sadly, seniors are more at risk for cyber crimes and financial exploitation. Cyber criminals get more sophisticated every year, with a dizzying array of tactics at their disposal. They can spoof numbers, use AI to replicate voices and create advanced phishing schemes with mimicked email addresses, fake bank requests, and calls from those posing as the IRS or other federal and state agencies. Our office helps fight these attackers. The Attorney General’s Office, primarily through our Consumer Protection Bureau, focuses on four categories—education, outreach, enforcement, and policy.

First, education. Our office has a host of materials to help educate Nebraskans (seniors and non-seniors alike) on our website at <a href="https://protectthegoodlife.nebraska.gov/">ProtectTheGoodLife.Nebraska.gov</a>. These resources help seniors spot and detect scams as well as recover from identity theft. Our valuable <a href="https://protectthegoodlife.nebraska.gov/resources">free resources</a> include an Identity Theft Consumer Guide and our booklet on Recognizing and Reporting Scams. This booklet includes details regarding tech support scams, imposter scams, moving scams, and more.

In addition, our team has a dedicated set of specialists in our Consumer Affairs Response Team – CART, for short. Our trained teammates help take incoming questions, educate Nebraskans on the issues they are seeing, and provide direction for solutions or referrals. If you have a question or think you might have someone who is trying to defraud you, call CART at 402-471-2682. Last year, our team took 5,000 calls and helped recover nearly $1 million.&nbsp;

Second, outreach. Our office has an Outreach Coordinator who goes to organizations and citizen groups to connect and build relationships with Nebraskans in communities around the state. Last year, we presented to thousands of Nebraskans, including those at senior centers and assisted living facilities. In addition, this year, we will be in Grand Island at the Nebraska State Fair! I look forward to visiting with Nebraskans in person at our booth.

Third, enforcement. Our team has a number of enforcement tools, from civil lawsuits that can be brought by our Consumer Protection Bureau to criminal prosecutions from the Attorney General’s Criminal Bureau. Our dedicated staff will hold bad actors who harm seniors responsible for their actions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fourth, we can help work with stakeholders to improve our statutory tools. In 2021, when I was Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, we passed LB297. This bill gave additional tools to financial institutions to spot and act upon potential financial exploitation of seniors.

As your Attorney General, protecting seniors will always be a moral obligation and solemn responsibility. By working together to educate seniors and their families, directing them where to go for help, and enforcing laws against those that would break them, we can ensure the Good Life continues throughout the golden years.

North Platte, Neb. — The Loup River Bridge at mile post 92.5 has been closed for emergency repairs and is limited to local traffic only, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

Closures will be enforced north from Mullen and at the Brownlee turn off south. The bridge is limited to one lane traffic at 35 mph. Passenger vehicles only. No commercial traffic nor trailed vehicles are allowed.&nbsp;

This closure will be in effect until further notice.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

West Central District Health Department

North Platte, Nebraska – The West Central District Health Department confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). The end of the summer season (August to September) is the most likely time of the year that positive West Nile samples are collected and reported. The health department is advising residents to continue to protect themselves against mosquito bites.&nbsp;

According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS), human WNV infections follow in the wake of positive mosquito pools, with a peak around Labor Day and disappearing around mid-September.&nbsp;

Approximately 8 out of 10 of people infected with WNV do not experience symptoms. The remaining 2 out of 10 people may experience fever, rash, headache fatigue, and joint pain. Symptom onset is typically 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease leading to possible muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and coma. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of experiencing more severe symptoms. There is no specific treatment for WNV. Symptomatic supportive care is provided when appropriate.&nbsp;

For the current WNV season, the jurisdiction of West Central District Health Department, has had one positive WNV mosquito pool (week ending August 12th) and one lab confirmed human case of West Nile Virus (week ending August 26th).&nbsp;

West Central District Health Department recommends that people avoid being outside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing lightweight protective clothing (including long-sleeved shirts and long pants) and by using an insect repellent containing DEET, IR3535, Oil of Eucalyptus or Picaridin. West Central District Health Department provides free DEET and Non-DEET wipes for residents.&nbsp;

Residents are encouraged to frequently drain containers and other standing or stagnant water around their homes to disrupt the breeding cycle of mosquitoes.&nbsp;

I am Larry Gossen, the Dean of NCTA, and along with Associate Dean Jennifer McConville and our dedicated faculty and staff, we extend a hearty "Go Aggies" to all of our regional supporters.

Aggie Class of' 25—Your Future Starts Here!

Ash Thompson is the new first-year building construction instructor for Mid-Plains Community College.

He will teach in North Platte, continuing a role he began in the spring. Prior to being hired as an instructor, Thompson worked in MPCC’s maintenance department.

“I have taught many people carpentry over the years; however, this is my first time teaching in a classroom setting,” Thompson said. “I wanted to teach to share my knowledge with the students and next generation of carpenters.”

Thompson is originally from North Platte, but his family moved to the Scottsbluff/Gering area when he was 2. He graduated from Gering High School in 1998 then attended college at MPCC to study the same subject he is now teaching.

“I chose building construction because I always liked to work on wood projects in high school and had a really good instructor who encouraged me to get into the program,” Thompson said.

He spent 17 years after college working for Wilkinson Development then took a job as a carpenter for a year at Great Plains Health before hiring on at MPCC.

“I’ve enjoyed sharing my experiences with the students and watching them grow,” Thompson said of his time at Mid-Plains. “I want to be a hands-on instructor who can teach not only by the book, but also by working side-by-side with my students. I hope they can take a good work ethic and craftmanship with them when the graduate from our program.”

Prior to being hired as an instructor, Thompson worked in MPCC’s maintenance department.“I have taught many people carpentry over the years; however, this is my first time teaching in a classroom setting,” Thompson said. “I wanted to teach to share my knowledge with the students and next generation of carpenters.”Thompson is originally from North Platte, but his family moved to the Scottsbluff/Gering area when he was 2. He graduated from Gering High School in 1998 then attended college at MPCC to study the same subject he is now teaching.“I chose building construction because I always liked to work on wood projects in high school and had a really good instructor who encouraged me to get into the program,” Thompson said.He spent 17 years after college working for Wilkinson Development then took a job as a carpenter for a year at Great Plains Health before hiring on at MPCC.“I’ve enjoyed sharing my experiences with the students and watching them grow,” Thompson said of his time at Mid-Plains. “I want to be a hands-on instructor who can teach not only by the book, but also by working side-by-side with my students. Mid-Plains Community College Associate Degree Nursing students achieved a 100 percent pass rate on their NCLEX-RN exams this year. It’s the first time since 2012 for the accomplishment.

“This 100 percent pass rate for our ADN students is phenomenal,” said Dr. Jody Tomanek, vice president of Academic Affairs and NPCC. “The faculty put in so much work to ensure that our students are getting the best education possible, and the students are responding by working hard to become the best possible nurses they can be. I couldn’t be prouder of the faculty and our students.”

The NCLEX exam tests the competency of nursing school graduates in the U.S. and Canada, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, which develops the exam.

Its purpose is to determine if a graduate can safely begin practice as an entry level nurse. The exam tests application and analysis using the knowledge grads learned in college and also tests their abilities to think critically and make informed decisions.

The NCLEX-RN exam that the Mid-Plains ADN students took is the same one taken by students pursing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

“I cannot express how proud I am of the ADN Class of 2023 and their 100 percent NCLEX pass rate,” said Dr. Kathy Harrison, MPCC director of nursing. “I am blessed to have a highly qualified faculty that has put a lot of time and energy into helping these students obtain their goal of becoming registered nurses.”

She attributes the 100 percent pass rate to several changes that have been made to the ADN program.

“A few that have made the most impact are increasing the admission GPA to a 3.0, implementing a preceptor experience in the last five weeks of the program and starting a NCLEX prep course,” Harrison said.

The preceptor experience pairs a student with an experienced nurse for 84 hours of clinical, which helps bridge the gap between being a student and becoming a professional nurse.

The students also take two mock exams in the NCLEX prep course in which they develop a study plan for NCLEX based off their mock exam results.

“I think Art Williams says it best – ‘I'm not telling you it’s going to be easy; I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it’,” said Harrison. “Nursing school is not an easy journey, but when you pass the NCLEX it is well worth it.”

As of Friday, the Licensed Practical Nursing class of 2023 also had a 100 percent pass rate with only two students left to take the NCLEX-PN.

Lincoln County Department Of Roads will be starting the 2023 Asphalt Milling and Overlay project on 8/23/23. Road construction on Antelope Rd. between Hershey Dickens Rd. and Sand Rd. will begin 8/23/23 and is expected to last until 8/29/23. 

Road construction on Garfield Table Rd. between Hwy. 83 and Witthuhn Rd. will begin 8/30/23 and is expected to last approximately 2 weeks. Please expect delays related to this construction. We would advise to use alternate routes during the construction period if possible.&nbsp; &nbsp;

In March of 1997 the first steering committee, under the leadership of North Platte Telegraph Editor Keith&nbsp; Blackledge, was held to determine the viability of a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in North Platte. There was&nbsp; much work to be done for that committee. Meetings needed to be held, data needed to be gathered, and name for the organization to be decided.&nbsp;

In January of 1998 Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were approved and affiliate status for North Platte&nbsp; Area Habitat for Humanity was granted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first lot was purchased on south Belmont, followed immediately by the selection of the first Habitat&nbsp; Partner Family. Over the next several months, the Partner Family, working alongside community&nbsp; volunteers, built the first Habitat house in North Platte. The house was completed and the long-standing tradition of a dedication and the presentation of keys was held on September 20, 1998.&nbsp;

Over the next twenty-five years sixty-two more houses have been built, providing safe, decent, affordable&nbsp; living for families in our community. The houses are still built by a core group of dedicated volunteers,&nbsp; some who have been with Habitat since the beginning, and they still work alongside the Partner Families as they earn their Sweat Equity hours required to participate in the homeownership program. Habitat will&nbsp; complete House #64 in September and plan to host a dedication later that month.&nbsp;

Habitat for Humanity Board President, John Hales said, “To honor and celebrate this quarter century of&nbsp; consistency, Habitat will be hosting a 25th Anniversary Garden Party at the home of long time Habitat&nbsp; supporters, Alan and Cheri Erickson. We are honored by their generosity and their desire to share in this&nbsp; celebration with us.”&nbsp;

The event will be held Friday, September 8th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Expect terrific live and silent auction&nbsp; items along with music, food, and drink. The Mid Plains Community College Softball team will be on hand&nbsp; to assist with auction items and guide guests throughout the evening.&nbsp;

“It has been an amazing experience to work for Habitat and guide our Partner Families through to homeownership,” said Dalene Skates, Executive Director for the affiliate. “I am blessed to be here for this&nbsp; celebration of all we’ve accomplished so far.”&nbsp;

North Platte News Director Canon Rath talked with Dee Nichelson about the Battle of Non-Profits event taking place August 26th at Pals Brewing Company.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The 3rd Annual Battle of the Non-Profits event is taking place August 26th at Pals Brewing Company in North Platte. The event features 8 teams all of non-profits to battle it out in games to win the first-place prize of $1,250.&nbsp;

The Battle of the Non-Profits was put together so non-profits can get recognition. "The purpose of the event is to promote and support local non-profit organizations and we do that battling between the different organizations with a fun event," said Executive Director Dee Nichelson. "We can earn funds from and also get some exposure out there to the community."&nbsp;

The event is still looking for volunteers to help with the Battle of the Non-Profits. They are still looking for two non-profit teams who would like to participate. If you want to learn more about the Battle of the Non-Profits, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;
