North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath sat down with Deb Skates and Sonja Voycheske to talk about the North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity 25th Anniversary Garden Party.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 25 years. For their 25th anniversary, they will be hosting a Garden Party on September 8th from 6pm – 9pm at the home of Al and Cheri Erickson who have been supporters for a long time. During the 25 years Habitat for Humanity has been in the North Platte community, Habitat has built 64 houses.&nbsp;

This event is a special way to celebrate the 25 years that Habitat for Humanity has been in North Platte. “It is a celebration of gratitude,” said Sonja Voycheske. “Habitat for Humanity has been in North Platte for 25 years and this is how we decided this is how we are going to celebrate it and it’s going to be a lovely event in the backyard of Cheri and Al Erickson.” The event will feature live music, adult beverages, and auction items.&nbsp;

Tickets are available for the event, but they are limited to 70. Tickets cost $50 a piece. There are a variety of places where you can get tickets. “They are (tickets) at the Habitat office and they are at Great Plains Reality,” said Dalene Skates.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The Support Our Schools campaign have been out gathering signatures the past 90 days&nbsp;to try to get the bill LB 753 on the 2024 ballot so Nebraska votes can vote on the bill. LB753 is the opportunity scholarship act and commits $50 million in tax credits for scholarships to kids across Nebraska with priority for scholarships going to kids who live in poverty, foster care, experience bullying, harassment, or other victimizing behaviors, or have a parent or guardian who is serving in the military.&nbsp;

Support our schools is against the bill as they favor public tax dollars should stay with public schools, not private schools. OGALLALA, NEB. - Second Chapter Brewing in Ogallala is hosting a Pop-Up Party this Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm mountain time. The event, which is free to the public and family friend will offer vendors, brew sampling, and a food truck will be in attendance.&nbsp;

The event is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to get together and support the community. "As entrepreneurs ourselves, we really want to support the local community and help other entrepreneurs to get there works in front of a different audience," said Lisa Kraus. "This will be a lot of fun and their will be something for everyone at the brewery and it's going to be a great day labor day weekend.

Goodwill Donation Drive held in Ogallala next week

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Sanjuana Garcia-Ramirez, 40, of Lexington, Nebraska, was sentenced today in federal court in Omaha, Nebraska, for possessing with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher sentenced Garcia-Ramirez to 78 months of imprisonment.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; After her release from prison, Garcia-Ramirez will begin a four-year term of supervised release.

On January 5, 2021, officers went to Garcia-Ramirez’s Lexington residence after receiving information that she was selling methamphetamine.&nbsp; Garcia-Ramirez was in drug court at the time in Dawson County, Nebraska, based on a prior conviction for possession of methamphetamine.&nbsp; Officers searched a bedroom and located multiple baggies of methamphetamine and a scale.&nbsp; Laboratory tests confirmed there was at least 53 grams of actual methamphetamine.&nbsp; Garcia-Ramirez intended to distribute the drugs.&nbsp;

The investigation revealed Garcia-Ramirez used her cell phone to facilitate her drug trafficking.&nbsp; Messages revealed her asking a drug buyer, “How much are you wanting,” and providing the buyer with the quantity and price of the drugs she could sell.&nbsp; In a December 2020 message, Garcia-Ramirez wrote, “I’m not using I promise,” and, “It’s all about the money it’s all.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

This case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol, the Lexington, Nebraska, Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lexington Woman Sentenced for Drug Trafficking

AUGUST 28, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after locating more than 130 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Friday, at approximately 7:40 a.m., a trooper observed an eastbound Cadillac CTS speeding near mile marker 228 in Dawson County. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed more than 100 packages containing a total weight of 133 pounds of marijuana. The driver, Jose Aparicio Mendoza, 28, of Mexico, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, and no operator’s license. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

On August 25, 2023, at 1:49 a.m., a Deputy was patrolling the Birdwood State Wildlife Area (Commonly known as Fire Lake just west of North Platte, NE).  The Deputy observed a vehicle on the west end of the lake with it’s lights on.   This area is closed at sunset.  The Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and check it.   The vehicle and it’s three occupants fled the area and a pursuit ensued. 

 The Deputy saw the driver and recognized him as twenty-five-year-old Jackson Seitz Jr. of North Platte, NE.  The Deputy chased the vehicle to the southwest corner of Lake Maloney (South of North Platte, NE) where it drove in a ditch and got stuck.  Mr. Seitz ran from the vehicle into a wooded area.   The Deputy detained the other two occupants and eventually released them.

 An extensive search was conducted with the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol for the remainder of the early morning, Mr. Seitz was not found.  Deputies did find a full syringe with suspected Methamphetamine in it.  It was later tested and found to be Methamphetamine.  A rave alert was sent out just before 8:00 a.m. this morning advising Lincoln County residents about the incident. 

 Within a couple of minutes, a citizen called in stating they just observed a similar subject on South Maloney Drive.  A Deputy in the area immediately arrested Mr. Seitz and he was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center.  Mr. Seitz was charged Possession of Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine and Flight to Avoid Arrest. This case is still under investigation and further charges will be forthcoming.

The event will feature over 60 different vendors and there will be lots of different items being sold at the event. There will be a kid's zone to drop your kids off and let them play while you shop. The Hot Sheets: August 26th, 2023

On August 21, 2023, around 8:45 p.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received a report of a Burglary in progress east of Maxwell, NE.   The caller was the owner of the property and observed an older pickup leaving her home, as she pulled in the driveway.  The caller also noticed her deep freeze was in the back of the pickup as it passed her. 

   Deputies met with the property owners and discovered the subjects had indeed taken a deep freeze completely full of beef.   Also, numerous tools and other items were taken from the house and shop.  To top it off, the suspects stole a Ford Crown Victoria car from the residence.  An intense investigation was conducted by Deputies, and they did develop several suspects.

 Deputies did recover the stolen Crown Victoria in North Platte, NE on August 22, 2023, near a local park.  During the morning hours of August 23, 2023, Deputies located fifty-four year old Rick Reeves of North Platte and sixty-two year old Joedy Brummels of North Platte, NE at separate locations.   Mr. Reeves and Mr. Brummels were both arrested for Burglary and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property. 

  Mr. Reeves and Mr. Brummels were incarcerated in the Lincoln County Detention Center.    Deputies executed a search warrant at Mr. Reeves residence in North Platte, NE. during the afternoon hours of August 23, 2023.  Deputies located the stolen deep freeze full of meat plugged in outside of the residence.  Additional stolen items were found inside and outside of the residence. 

  Deputies located two rifles in the residence and Mr. Reeves is a convicted felon, prohibited from having them.     Deputies ended the search for the evening because the extensive amount of suspected stolen property in the residence.  It was sealed and guarded all night as it seemed clear Mr. Reeves residence was a hub for potentially stolen items. On August 24, 2023, during the morning hours, Deputies continued the search and wrote additional search warrant for the suspected stolen property.  Several truck loads of property were seized, and a small amount of suspected Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia was taken. 

  Thirty-six-year-old Matthew Reeves of 29 Palms, California is also wanted in connection to the Burglary and Theft.   Deputies are actively searching for him as well.   This case is ongoing and additional charges will follow.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lincoln County Sheriff's OfficeOn August 21, 2023, around 8:45 p.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received a report of a Burglary in progress east of Maxwell, NE. The caller was the owner of the property and observed an older pickup leaving her home, as she pulled in the driveway. The caller also noticed her deep freeze was in the back of the pickup as it passed her. Deputies met with the property owners and discovered the subjects had indeed taken a deep freeze completely full of beef. Also, numerous tools and other items were taken from the house and shop. To top it off, the suspects stole a Ford Crown Victoria car from the residence. During the morning hours of August 23, 2023, Deputies located fifty-four year old Rick Reeves of North Platte and sixty-two year old Joedy Brummels of North Platte, NE at separate locations. Mr. Reeves and Mr. Brummels were both arrested for Burglary and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property. Mr. Reeves and Mr. Brummels were incarcerated in the Lincoln County Detention Center. Deputies executed a search warrant at Mr. Reeves residence in North Platte, NE. during the afternoon hours of August 23, 2023. Deputies located the stolen deep freeze full of meat plugged in outside of the residence. Additional stolen items were found inside and outside of the residence. Deputies located two rifles in the residence and Mr. Reeves is a convicted felon, prohibited from having them. Deputies ended the search for the evening because the extensive amount of suspected stolen property in the residence. It was sealed and guarded all night as it seemed clear Mr. Reeves residence was a hub for potentially stolen items. On August 24, 2023, during the morning hours, Deputies continued the search and wrote additional search warrant for the suspected stolen property. Lincoln County Sheriff arrests two in connection with a burglary in Maxwell

Lisa Stultz, 5th Grade Teacher and 4-6 ELA Teacher at Maxwell Public Schools was awarded the John Russell Applegate Grant. The grant was valued at $2200.00 and helped purchase an Interactive Smartboard and Projector for the ELA classroom. Mrs. Stultz stated, “With today's students, we need to make learning engaging, active, and collaborative in order for them to retain and recall the information that we present to them.”

Mrs. Stultz felt that an Interactive Smartboard and Projector would assist her in presenting lessons to her students. With the help of an Interactive Smartboard she could focus lesson time on the improvement of recall, reading comprehension skills, boosting vocabulary, promoting critical thinking, and developing listening skills.

Mrs. Stultz wishes to present this knowledge and share it with her students through the Interactive Smartboard, where students will get to manipulate text, highlight, play learning games, view shared powerpoints, and see results in real-time. Reading has always been a foundational aspect of learning, but at the same time, interactive and collaborative learning is today's foundation.

Mrs. Stutz said that this purchase would not be possible without the John Russell Applegate Grant for Teachers and wants to thank the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation for selecting her for this wonderful opportunity.

On August 23, 2023, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received several reports of thefts from vehicles in Sutherland, NE.   Deputies responded to each call throughout the day and investigated the incidents.  During the investigation a suspect was developed, and Deputies began searching for him. A Deputy from Keith County reported numerous thefts from vehicles in Paxton, NE and had the same suspect as Lincoln County. 

On August 24, 2023, at 12:26 a.m., Deputies were advised the suspect was at a residence south of Sutherland, NE.   Deputies responded and arrested eighteen-year-old Ty Dowling of Sutherland, NE.  A search of Mr. Dowling’s property revealed several stolen items.  Mr. Dowling was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center for Theft by Unlawful Taking.  The investigation into this matter in both Counties is ongoing and additional charges are likely.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lincoln County Sheriff release statement about recent thefts in Sutherland

On August 21, 2023, officers received information that a vehicle would be returning to North Platte and the occupants would be in possession of illegal narcotics. At approximately 5:00 pm, officers located the vehicle entering North Platte from I-80 and conducted a traffic stop. 

 Contact was made with the occupants, 60 year old Douglas Baker and 57 year old Pamela Baker, both residents of North Platte.  During the stop, PSD Briggs was deployed, and probable cause was developed to search the vehicle.  A search of the vehicle was conducted, and officers located 50 fentanyl pills and over a pound of suspected methamphetamine inside of the vehicle. 

A search of Pamela Baker's person was conducted and a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine was located.  Douglas and Pamela Baker were taken into custody without issue. They were both charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, in excess of one hundred forty grams.  Bond has been set at 10% of $500,000 for both defendants.&nbsp;
