There will be two more opportunities for the public to purchase tickets for the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car following its return from the Nebraska State Fair.

The 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport will be at the Cohagen Battery Store in North Platte from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6.

The last chance to buy tickets will be immediately prior to the drawing for the car at 2 p.m. Sept. 9 during the annual Colonel Cody’s Cruise Show and Shine in North Platte’s Memorial Park.&nbsp;

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in NPCC’s Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

Among the Pontiac’s many features are a LQ4 6.0L engine,&nbsp;4L80 transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, a Kilduff Shifter and Ford nine-inch, clutch-style Eaton Posi differential.

The car is painted in PPG Lightning Blue, boasts a custom hood and front valance and comes with air conditioning and cruise control amenities.

The Le Mans toured the state throughout the summer, making appearances at car shows, parades and cruise night events.

A total of 10,000 raffle tickets were offered at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds from the raffle will be used for scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

Tickets are still being sold at the welcome centers of Mid-Plains Community College campuses&nbsp;in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine and at various area businesses.

The businesses, organizations and individuals selling tickets this year include: Don’s Motor Company, Cohagen Battery Store, Levander’s Body Shop, Grandma’s Memories Antiques and Collectibles, Isabelle’s Auction House, A.J. Janas, Pat Smith, Jody’s Auto Sales and LKQ Corporation, all in North Platte.

This will be the fourth year the North Platte Young Professionals (NPYP) host the “shark-tank” inspired pitch competition, and they have brought back the Youth Category. With outstanding support of the youth in our community, the NPYP Advisory Committee decided to bring back the category. Mid Plains Community College has sponsored college scholarships, that can be used at any MPCC campus, as well as summer courses for the prize awards for those entering under 18. &nbsp;Third Place will win at $1,000 scholarship. Second Place a $1,500 scholarship. First Place will win a $2,500 scholarship.

Eagle Communications, through the Schmidt Foundation has graciously stepped up again this year to donate prize money for the Community Category. Third Place will win $3,000. Second Place will win $7,000. First Place will win $10,000.

This idea pitch competition is seeking application/ideas and the deadline is fast approaching on September 17th.&nbsp; We want to hear your ideas and with the top three ideas winning prize money and support to help bring their product, service, or enhancement to current business to fruition. Paxton Labor Day Cornhole tournament

Union Pacific Railroad today announced Scott Moore, senior vice president-Corporate Relations and chief administrative officer, will retire Oct. 1 following a long career in railroading and politics.

In his role at Union Pacific, Moore has companywide responsibility for public affairs, corporate communications and all executive services, including Union Pacific's iconic heritage fleet. He also serves as president of the Union Pacific Foundation.

“In his time at Union Pacific, Scott has shown strategic vision and unwavering leadership as he guided his teams and the company through monumental change,” said Jim Vena, CEO of Union Pacific. “His passion and commitment have played an important role in galvanizing the railroad's reputation for Building America. I couldn't be more grateful for Scott and his contributions over his longtime career. We'll miss his leadership, and I'll miss him personally.”

Moore began his railroad career 23 years ago after a successful career in politics that began by representing Nebraska's 24th legislative district in the Nebraska Legislature from 1987 to 1994. He went on to serve two terms as Nebraska's Secretary of State from 1994 to 2000.

In 2000, Moore exited state government and joined Union Pacific as Director of Government Affairs. He went on to become the railroad's Assistant Vice President-Public Partnerships, followed by vice president-Public Affairs for Union Pacific's nine-state Western Region based in Roseville, California. In 2015, Moore returned to Omaha as senior vice president-Corporate Relations and chief administrative officer, where he oversaw all state and local government affairs activities for the railroad's 23-state system, the Corporate Communications function and served as Chief of Staff to the Chief Executive Officer.

“I couldn't be more proud of my teammates and the work they've accomplished during my years at Union Pacific,” Moore said. “It's been an honor of a lifetime to serve alongside some of the most talented, creative people in the railroad industry.”

In addition to his railroad career, Moore served on many community boards over the decades, including as Chair of the Nebraska State Chamber of Commerce &amp; Industry and as President of the Nebraskaland Foundation. He continues to serve on the boards of the National Park Foundation's National Council, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Foundation.

Moore and his wife, Danene J. Tushar, will divide their time between outdoor activities in Colorado and enjoying friends and family in Nebraska, where both are avid Cornhusker fans.

On September 1, 2023, at 8:29 AM, Lumen has notified us that 911 services have been restored to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) across Nebraska.  Many 911 centers in Nebraska were adversely impacted last evening, after a fiber cut made it impossible for 911 calls to be routed to the proper PSAP.   We have tested 911 service into the North Platte 911 Center and calls are presenting properly for our service area. 

 However, we continue to receive some misrouted calls from communities in eastern Nebraska.  Those calls are being handled by our staff and transferred to the proper 911 centers.  I was in contact with Nebraska Public Service Commission 911 Director David Sankey this morning and told that the commission will continue to investigate the cause of the 911 outage.&nbsp;

Southwest Public Health Department

This summer ten community swimming pools received Pool Cool certificates from Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). The Pool Cool program works with local swimming pools to train pool staff to provide children with education about skin cancer and sun safety during their swim lessons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Pool Cool program manager, Sarah Minnick, visited area swimming pools in June to increase awareness of sun protection practices with pool staff and pool users. Ten area swimming pools agreed to teach the Pool Cool program. Pools were asked to send pictures of lifeguards teaching the Pool Cool program and then they would qualify for the certificate and a cash incentive.&nbsp;

SWNPHD provided signage for each of the pools that was used to educate swimmers and act as a sun safety reminder. “We also provided the pools with free sunscreen so if someone forgets to apply it before arriving to the pool, they will have some readily available,” Minnick explained. “Using the Pool Cool program that the National Cancer Institute has made available for area pools is a great tool to help educate all swimmers and pool employees on sun safety and preventing skin cancer.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

In July and August Sarah Minnick visited those same pools again to present the pools with their certificate of completion and $250 dollars as a thank you for helping their communities prevent skin cancer. The pools that completed the program were Arapahoe Pool, Beaver City Pool, Benkelman Pool, Culbertson Pool, Curtis Pool, Cambridge Public Pool, Indianola Public Pool, Oxford Pool, Paxton Pool, and Wauneta Pool.&nbsp;

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in the United States; it accounts for nearly 1.3 million new cases of cancer each year. Southwest Public Health DepartmentThis summer ten community swimming pools received Pool Cool certificates from Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). The Pool Cool program works with local swimming pools to train pool staff to provide children with education about skin cancer and sun safety during their swim lessons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Pool Cool program manager, Sarah Minnick, visited area swimming pools in June to increase awareness of sun protection practices with pool staff and pool users. Ten area swimming pools agreed to teach the Pool Cool program. Pools were asked to send pictures of lifeguards teaching the Pool Cool program and then they would qualify for the certificate and a cash incentive.&nbsp;SWNPHD provided signage for each of the pools that was used to educate swimmers and act as a sun safety reminder. “We also provided the pools with free sunscreen so if someone forgets to apply it before arriving to the pool, they will have some readily available,” Minnick explained. “Using the Pool Cool program that the National Cancer Institute has made available for area pools is a great tool to help educate all swimmers and pool employees on sun safety and preventing skin cancer.”&nbsp;&nbsp;In July and August Sarah Minnick visited those same pools again to present the pools with their certificate of completion and $250 dollars as a thank you for helping their communities prevent skin cancer. The pools that completed the program were Arapahoe Pool, Beaver City Pool, Benkelman Pool, Culbertson Pool, Curtis Pool, Cambridge Public Pool, Indianola Public Pool, Oxford Pool, Paxton Pool, and Wauneta Pool.&nbsp;Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in the United States; it accounts for nearly 1.3 million new cases of cancer each year. This years theme is "In the League of Our Own" (Baseball) &amp; Community Pride.  We are so excited to see some of the creative ideas that everyone has for their floats and/or rides!  This years theme was chosen to represent the alliance, camaraderie, fellowship, kinship, and unity that all of our communities have.  Paxton itself has a lot of history, tradition, and so many changes. 

 In the 1870's Paxton was actually called Alkali due to the soil being alkaline.  Now, I can totally get nerdy with this, but I shall digress!  But, the name didn't change until 1885 from Alkali to Paxton.  A Rancher from Omaha named William Paxton had the largest ranching operation in the area, and the town was named after him.  Also, in 1885, bridges were built for the development of young communities to grow on the other side of the river. 

 Again, this area alone (not just Paxton) is unique with a rich history! Which makes all of us "in the league of our own".  First named after the type of soil and then named after a ranching operation, Paxton continues to thrive in change, innovation, growth, and friendship.  Parade Info: -The parade starts at 10am and starts at the Paxton Consolidated Schools. 

 The parade route starts on 3rd street, heads straight East on 3rd and ends at the Paxton Ball Fields. -Registration starts at 9am at the Paxton Consolidated Schools-Categories: YOUTH- 5th graders and under, 6th graders and older (CASH ONLY).  Other categories - Business, Farms &amp; Ranch, Vehicles, Churches &amp; Non-Profits.  -Trophy for "OVER ALL" winner and trophies for winners within each category.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paxton Labor Day Celebration parade information

On August 30, 2023, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a semi/road construction broom sweeper accident .1 miles west of Arnold, NE on Nebraska Highway 92.  The accident was reported at 6:02 a.m.   Roadwork was being performed on the highway at the time of the accident.

A 67-year-old Stapleton, NE male was driving a 2014 Freightliner semi, pulling a livestock trailer, eastbound on Highway 92.  A 56-year-old Broken Bow, NE, male, was in a road construction broom sweeper, in front of the Freightliner semi.  The semi-impacted the road construction broom sweeper pushing it into the south ditch.  The semi came to rest in the north ditch. 

 The driver of the broom sweeper was transported to Great Plains Health Hospital in North Platte, NE and was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The driver of the semi was not transported and had minor injuries.  The driver of the semi was wearing a seatbelt.  Seatbelt use by the driver of the road construction broom sweeper is unknown.  The names of the individuals involved are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

A night of great music is planned for this year’s Concert for Healthcare at the Kiplinger Arena, Red Willow County Fairgrounds, on Saturday, October 7 when Priscilla Block presents her Block Party Tour. The energizing show raises funds to support Community Hospital’s vision of cultivating healthy communities through progressive and proactive care. Jordan Fletcher, a Nashville based artist, opens at 6:30 pm with Block beginning at 8 pm. Doors open at 6 pm.

The Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery is pleased to announce that&nbsp; Andrea Gage, from Iowa City, Iowa, will be the Artist in Residence from September 1 to September 15, 2023. A reception will take place at&nbsp; the museum on Wednesday September 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 to honor her.&nbsp; Andrea’s work&nbsp;will be on display at the museum with many available&nbsp; for purchase.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Andrea’s biography is an interesting one and follows:&nbsp;

The nasty crayon and the teeth-marked pencil in the bottom of my purse along&nbsp; with a pharmacy receipt the length of I-80 were the only art supplies I&nbsp; happened to have with me during some of the longest hours and hardest days&nbsp; sitting at the hospital. The bad news - there was no eraser on the mini-golf&nbsp; pencil. The good news - I had a lot of time to practice. Art became my&nbsp; solace. Sketching and drawing was a quiet calming activity that took my focus&nbsp; off of anxiety and onto the beauty of what was around me. And sometimes I&nbsp; really had to look hard. We all do. When life stinks and we can’t see the&nbsp; beauty in it, we can create it for ourselves. We have to. That’s what we do as&nbsp; humans to survive and that is what we do as artists. I hope you too can find&nbsp; something that speaks to you in my paintings, but more importantly in the&nbsp; world around you. I look forward to hearing from you.&nbsp;

Andrea’s Artist Statement follows:

I think the real artists are just too busy with being and growing and acting&nbsp; like themselves to worry about the end. The end&nbsp;will be what it will be. The&nbsp; object is intense living, fulfillment; the great happiness in creation. People&nbsp; sometimes phrase about&nbsp;the joy of work. It is only in creative work that joy&nbsp; may be found.” – Robert Henri, The Art Spirit, (1923).&nbsp;

While I have always enjoyed art, it wasn’t until the busyness of life took over that I realized I&nbsp; had pushed it aside. Too many things on my plate with work, children, family commitments,&nbsp; and laundry to have time to create. I was busy creating life – or so I thought. It is strange&nbsp; how the potholes in life’s road force a new perspective. When sitting in a pit, you’re forced to&nbsp; look up.&nbsp;

The end will be what it will be. This sentiment that Robert Henri expresses above is exactly&nbsp; what ran through my mind countless times during all the chemo, radiation, surgery rounds with&nbsp; my parents’ cancer battles. During moves across the country for my husband’s advancing&nbsp; career or endless ear infections, stomach flu or anxiety attacks that life brings to our doorstep, I&nbsp; needed a balance. I realized during those up all night events as the night watchman and hand&nbsp; holder that I needed to take a closer look at life. I had taken up sketching on receipts from the&nbsp; bottom of my purse with the sticky crayon or chewed pencil with the broken eraser to keep&nbsp; myself awake while I took the nightshift of caregiving. I soon lost track of the time. The&nbsp; doodles turned into form, the lines into expression and I soon began to see. I was looking&nbsp; beyond what I knew and began to draw what I was seeing. More than that really – to create&nbsp; from what I was feeling. It was during those moments that time stood still for me and the&nbsp; worry, stress and exhaustion seemed to fall away to clear focus.&nbsp;

Peace of mind is not easy to find. It is a scavenger hunt of one’s own making. I had the clues&nbsp; and the answers, yet the puzzle pieces didn’t match the image on the box that I was sold. There&nbsp; are no refunds or exchanges. The end will be what it will be. Life is what we make it. I have&nbsp; to pursue the moments I have in front of me. The view I choose to take in life is mine. I can&nbsp; look at it as work or as creation – as duty or joy. Capturing the essence of life in a moment is&nbsp; my joy in creating works of art. I hope to encourage others to see and create joy for themselves.&nbsp;

The Artist in Residence program was established in 1988 to encourage&nbsp; understanding and appreciation of the arts in central Nebraska and to promote the&nbsp; legacy of Robert Henri, one of America’s greatest art instructors. A reception will take place at&nbsp; the museum on Wednesday September 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 to honor her.&nbsp; Andrea’s work&nbsp;will be on display at the museum with many available&nbsp; for purchase.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Andrea’s biography is an interesting one and follows:&nbsp;The nasty crayon and the teeth-marked pencil in the bottom of my purse along&nbsp; with a pharmacy receipt the length of I-80 were the only art supplies I&nbsp; happened to have with me during some of the longest hours and hardest days&nbsp; sitting at the hospital. The bad news - there was no eraser on the mini-golf&nbsp; pencil. The good news - I had a lot of time to practice. Art became my&nbsp; solace. Sketching and drawing was a quiet calming activity that took my focus&nbsp; off of anxiety and onto the beauty of what was around me. And sometimes I&nbsp; really had to look hard. We all do. When life stinks and we can’t see the&nbsp; beauty in it, we can create it for ourselves. We have to. That’s what we do as&nbsp; humans to survive and that is what we do as artists. I hope you too can find&nbsp; something that speaks to you in my paintings, but more importantly in the&nbsp; world around you. I look forward to hearing from you.&nbsp;Andrea’s Artist Statement follows:I think the real artists are just too busy with being and growing and acting&nbsp; like themselves to worry about the end. The end&nbsp;will be what it will be. The&nbsp; object is intense living, fulfillment; the great happiness in creation. People&nbsp; sometimes phrase about&nbsp;the joy of work. It is only in creative work that joy&nbsp; may be found.” – Robert Henri, The Art Spirit, (1923).&nbsp;While I have always enjoyed art, it wasn’t until the busyness of life took over that I realized I&nbsp; had pushed it aside. Too many things on my plate with work, children, family commitments,&nbsp; and laundry to have time to create. I was busy creating life – or so I thought. It is strange&nbsp; how the potholes in life’s road force a new perspective. When sitting in a pit, you’re forced to&nbsp; look up.&nbsp;The end will be what it will be. This sentiment that Robert Henri expresses above is exactly&nbsp; what ran through my mind countless times during all the chemo, radiation, surgery rounds with&nbsp; my parents’ cancer battles. During moves across the country for my husband’s advancing&nbsp; career or endless ear infections, stomach flu or anxiety attacks that life brings to our doorstep, I&nbsp; needed a balance. I realized during those up all night events as the night watchman and hand&nbsp; holder that I needed to take a closer look at life. I had taken up sketching on receipts from the&nbsp; bottom of my purse with the sticky crayon or chewed pencil with the broken eraser to keep&nbsp; myself awake while I took the nightshift of caregiving. I soon lost track of the time. The&nbsp; doodles turned into form, the lines into expression and I soon began to see. I was looking&nbsp; beyond what I knew and began to draw what I was seeing. More than that really – to create&nbsp; from what I was feeling. It was during those moments that time stood still for me and the&nbsp; worry, stress and exhaustion seemed to fall away to clear focus.&nbsp;Peace of mind is not easy to find. It is a scavenger hunt of one’s own making. I had the clues&nbsp; and the answers, yet the puzzle pieces didn’t match the image on the box that I was sold. There&nbsp; are no refunds or exchanges. The end will be what it will be. Life is what we make it. I have&nbsp; to pursue the moments I have in front of me. The view I choose to take in life is mine. I can&nbsp; look at it as work or as creation – as duty or joy. Capturing the essence of life in a moment is&nbsp; my joy in creating works of art. I hope to encourage others to see and create joy for themselves.&nbsp;The museum’s artist programs are being sponsored by the membership of the&nbsp; museum. NORTH PLATTE, NE, August 30, 2023 -- North Platte High School’s Theatre Department will present the well beloved classic,&nbsp;Pride and Prejudice&nbsp;September 15th and 16th&nbsp; at 7:00 p.m at the NPHS Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

The Jane Austen novel adapted by Joseph Hanreddy and J.R. Sullivan tells the story of the Bennet family, their five daughters, and the joy, heartbreak, and humor that is trying to find a husband. “While the romance and tension are the main thread throughout the story, this adaptation really leans into the themes of family and the lengths we are willing to go to for them.” states director Brittany McDaniel.&nbsp; With a cast and crew of 41, the show fills the stage and it has been a lot of work.&nbsp; With this many students involved, McDaniel had to bring in extra help.&nbsp; Parents built the set, extra students helped with the set painting, and the new FCS Club at the high school made several of the costumes. “It’s been a wonderful, community experience to be able to connect with different people with different talents and let them showcase what they can do on stage alongside the actors.” adds McDaniel.

This will be a show you won’t want to miss.&nbsp; All theatergoers will appreciate this timeless classic.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The community of Gothenburg will be hosting a Friends Festival theme from September13th - September 17th. All the events are related to the Friends TV show that aired from 1994 to 2004 lasting 10 seasons. Throughout the five-day festival, there are plenty of events for everyone to enjoy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year's festival is something new coming to the Gothenburg community. "Gothenburg has hosted the harvest festival in town for over 100 years and it's our annual fall festival like other small towns have," said Deb Egenberger. "This year we landed on the Friends theme, so it's a Friends fest and most of our activities are connected to the Friends television show."&nbsp;

North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath sat down with Deb Skates and Sonja Voycheske to talk about the North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity 25th Anniversary Garden Party.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 25 years. For their 25th anniversary, they will be hosting a Garden Party on September 8th from 6pm – 9pm at the home of Al and Cheri Erickson who have been supporters for a long time. During the 25 years Habitat for Humanity has been in the North Platte community, Habitat has built 64 houses.&nbsp;

This event is a special way to celebrate the 25 years that Habitat for Humanity has been in North Platte. “It is a celebration of gratitude,” said Sonja Voycheske. “Habitat for Humanity has been in North Platte for 25 years and this is how we decided this is how we are going to celebrate it and it’s going to be a lovely event in the backyard of Cheri and Al Erickson.” The event will feature live music, adult beverages, and auction items.&nbsp;

Tickets are available for the event, but they are limited to 70. Tickets cost $50 a piece. There are a variety of places where you can get tickets. “They are (tickets) at the Habitat office and they are at Great Plains Reality,” said Dalene Skates.&nbsp;
