The public is invited to share in the accomplishments of graduates of North Platte Community College’s&nbsp;Medical Laboratory Technician program.&nbsp;

A pinning ceremony is planned for 1:30 p.m. May 12 in Room 108 of the Health and Science Center on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Road, North Platte.

The following students will be recognized: Montannia Courtney, Kylee Goodrich and Gabriel Marquez, all of North Platte; Keshia Leeper, of Madrid and Savanna Stevens, of Ogallala.&nbsp;

The pinning ceremony will be followed by commencement at 3 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Building, also on the NPCC South Campus.

TheNorth Platte Downtown Association,in coordination with Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful, will be holding the annual Downtown Cleanup on Tuesday, May 9.&nbsp;

The event is held annually as part of the Great American Cleanup, which is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages 2 million volunteers who take action in their communities to create positive change and lasting impact.

The day will kick off with breakfast and a short meeting at 8:30 AM sponsored byNebraskaLand Bank at their downtown location.&nbsp;Volunteers will be split into groups to begin cleanup efforts at 9:00 AM.&nbsp;Lunch will be served at 1st Interstate Bank with their sponsorship. A special treat at Double Dips Ice Creamery will round out the day, sponsored byAdams Bank and Trust, for those who helped with the cleanup efforts.&nbsp;Volunteers don’t need to be present for the entire day.&nbsp;

After the initial registration at NebraskaLand Bank, the headquarters will be moved to the corner of 5th and Dewey.&nbsp;&nbsp;Water and soda will be provided byCoca Cola Bottling and all other supplies will be available.&nbsp;Volunteers can stop in at any time during the day and stay for as long as they would like.&nbsp;

“We want to encourage everyone to get involved in keeping our community a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live,” said Mona Anderson, Executive Director of Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful.&nbsp;

Downtown association cleanup scheduled for May 9

Nebraska’s best-known destination for stargazing is the location of an upcoming educational series to celebrate the night sky, a combined effort of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and National Park Service.

On Saturday, April 29, a National Park Service ranger will lead “Journey Through the Night Sky” — the first of four dark sky programs planned at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area between now and fall.

At the first event, attendees will use telescopes and learn about importance of dark skies and problems posed by light pollution. The program, which appropriately occurs during Global Astronomy Month, will begin at 8 p.m. at the Snake River Area.

In 2022, Merritt Reservoir earned became an International Dark Sky Park, a title presented by the International Dark-Sky Association. Merritt is the first location in Nebraska to make the list, which includes some of America’s most breathtaking national and state parks. Merritt Reservoir is located 26 miles southwest of Valentine.

post 238.27 to reference post 247.88, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.


IHC Scott Inc., of Englewood, Colo., is the contractor for this project. Work includes building
interstate crossovers, roadway lighting and culverts to facilitate interstate reconstruction. Traffic
will be maintained with lane and shoulder closures. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect.
Anticipated project completion is May 2025.


Additional details regarding the interstate reconstruction work are forthcoming.


Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones
down.

GOVE COUNTY, Kan. — The prairie was still asleep when I drug my blurry-eyed self and camera gear out of a van onto a pasture in Gove County.

Our instructions indicated we should follow the stacks of cow pies to the lek, mating grounds for prairie chickens, usually used year after year.

We quickly set up our pop-up blinds and settled into the darkness, waiting and listening as the cold, dry Kansas wind slapped our faces.&nbsp;

"You will hear them before you see them," our guide whispered as he zipped us in.

Then through the darkness, you could hear warbles and then bloop, bloop, bloop of the lesser prairie chickens and finally the booooma of a greater prairie chicken.

I participated in the <a href="https://www.audubonofkansas.org/grousetours">Kansas Audubon Society</a>'s Lek Trek weekend April 13 to 16, which was based in Hays.

Although greater prairie chickens can be found from Texas to southern Canada, northwestern Kansas is the only place in the world where greater and lesser prairie chickens occur in the same place.&nbsp;

Lesser prairie chickens have a much smaller range that includes parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico — the majority of that range is in western Kansas.

Last weekend, more than 140 birders from across the nation came to Kansas, with Hays as their base, to see prairie chickens during their mating season.&nbsp;

In addition to the males inflating sacks on either side of their throats to make their signature booms, prairie chickens are also known for their distinct (and in my view, comical) mating dances.

The males shoot up feathers located on the back of their necks called&nbsp;pinnae. Those feathers stick up above their heads like horns. They stick their tail feathers up in the air, wiggle their butts and quickly stomp their feet. It looks like a combo between a 2-year-old throwing a temper tantrum and grandma trying to do the chicken dance.&nbsp;

Although you're supposed to be dead silent in those blinds, it's hard not to giggle just a little at the whole sight.

As more birds join the lek, fights erupt. Two males will face off in the middle of the lek, staring at each other. Sometimes they just walk away. Other times one will fly up and pounce on the other bird.&nbsp;

The females, who are much less showy, which is common in the bird world, mingle with the males appearing uninterested and unamused.

Even after all the girls have left the lek for the morning, a few males tend to hang out, too tired to spar anymore.&nbsp;

Observing prairie chickens from a blind gets you the best views of the birds and the best glimpses of their natural behaviors.

At times, birds were no more than 10 feet from our blinds and could be easily seen without scopes or binoculars.&nbsp;

The downside is that you have to be in those blinds before the first light and must stay in the blinds without a bathroom break until after 9 a.m. in our case when the birds for no apparent reason all flushed at once. We met to load vans to head toward our leks at 3:30 a.m.

Even last Friday when the high was 80, it was cold on that hilltop in Gove County, even with three layers of clothes and gloves. A birder from San Fransisco who went out on one of the blind tours Saturday morning when the high was only in the 50s said it was the coldest he had ever been.

They haven't been here when the wind chills were 50 below.

Prairie chickens were once ubiquitous on the prairie. Early settlers hunted them for food. However, their numbers have been in decline for decades.

Prairie chickens need large open areas of grassland to sustain their populations and perform their signature mating dances. They don't like anything that is taller than they are. This includes trees, power poles, windmills and oil derricks.&nbsp;

Some researchers have proffered the prairie chickens avoid these natural and manmade structures because they have historically been used by birds of prey for perches.

You likely have heard lesser prairie chickens mentioned in the news recently. The federal government has listed the lesser prairie chicken as threatened, which is not sitting too well with some energy companies and local landowners.

Prairie chickens thrive on cattle pastures. Grazing keeps cover at the needed heights for the prairie chickens through their life cycles. They need some short grass, some medium cover and some thicker cover.&nbsp;

One of these said landowners stopped our van on the way out of the pasture Friday morning and started chit-chatting about the chickens.

He said he too had prairie chickens on his property, but he said he was concerned about the limits the listing would place on property rights.

The landowner said he isn't bothered by the prairie chickens or the researchers and visitors who come to see them.&nbsp;

However, he said he wants to be able to manage his cattle and land without interference from the feds in D.C. 

The farmer's concerns did not fall on deaf ears. We've had a farm in our family for several generations. It's hard work, and farmers are often left with small profits and big debts.

So why go through all this trouble to save this one goofy little bird?&nbsp;

Jackie Augustine, organizer of the Prairie Chicken Festival and an expert on the birds, said simply they're cute.

More importantly, they are a sign of healthy prairie habitat.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/727ddb20-ced5-4d23-9090-aeb6cfda8a9e">She also argued voluntary measures have been in place for years, but the prairie chicken populations have yet to stabilize.</a>

Commerce doesn't have to be given up entirely for conservation.

Augustine said cattle ranchers can still run cattle on their land, and the listing doesn't completely restrict oil and energy production in this region. It encourages it to be done in areas that won't destroy leks.

Birders are a passionate group. They have what they call life lists, which include every bird they have seen in their lifetimes. Some birders travel internationally to add to those life lists.

The Prairie Chicken Festival attendees, most of whom were from out of state, paid hundreds of dollars in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/audubonofkansas">Audubon</a> fees alone, not to mention food, gas, lodging and entertainment to watch these birds.

Coming to a compromise between maintaining property owner rights and implementing conservation tactics that will preserve the lesser prairie chicken is where we need to be, but that's not where politics are going.

Unfortunately, parties in the prairie chicken debate have taken to their corners for a fight. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1f995f9e-3403-4556-b353-c968c3e5e924">Last week, the Kansas Attorney General sued President Biden in an attempt to have the lesser prairie chicken delisted from the threatened species list.</a>

This weekend was my third time observing prairie chickens in the wild. They never cease to amaze me. They always make me smile. Their boom ... boom ... boom ... makes me feel more in rhythm.&nbsp;

They don't understand land deeds or lawsuits. They are just doing what prairie chickens do.

Those who know me, know I am not a morning person. I don't know anyone who is a 3 a.m. morning person. However, as I emerged from our little prairie cocoons Friday morning on lek, I had a huge smile on my face. The hike, no bathroom, the early wakeup, and the cold were worth it.

However, as the birds flushed and disappeared into the gray morning Friday, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as I wondered what was next for my feathered friends.

 </figure>At times, birds were no more than 10 feet from our blinds and could be easily seen without scopes or binoculars.&nbsp;The downside is that you have to be in those blinds before the first light and must stay in the blinds without a bathroom break until after 9 a.m. in our case when the birds for no apparent reason all flushed at once. We met to load vans to head toward our leks at 3:30 a.m.Even last Friday when the high was 80, it was cold on that hilltop in Gove County, even with three layers of clothes and gloves. A birder from San Fransisco who went out on one of the blind tours Saturday morning when the high was only in the 50s said it was the coldest he had ever been.They haven't been here when the wind chills were 50 below.Prairie chickens were once ubiquitous on the prairie. Early settlers hunted them for food. However, their numbers have been in decline for decades.<figure>

 </figure>Prairie chickens need large open areas of grassland to sustain their populations and perform their signature mating dances. They don't like anything that is taller than they are. This includes trees, power poles, windmills and oil derricks.&nbsp;Some researchers have proffered the prairie chickens avoid these natural and manmade structures because they have historically been used by birds of prey for perches.You likely have heard lesser prairie chickens mentioned in the news recently. The federal government has listed the lesser prairie chicken as threatened, which is not sitting too well with some energy companies and local landowners.Prairie chickens thrive on cattle pastures. Grazing keeps cover at the needed heights for the prairie chickens through their life cycles. They need some short grass, some medium cover and some thicker cover.&nbsp;One of these said landowners stopped our van on the way out of the pasture Friday morning and started chit-chatting about the chickens.<figure>

 </figure>He said he too had prairie chickens on his property, but he said he was concerned about the limits the listing would place on property rights.The landowner said he isn't bothered by the prairie chickens or the researchers and visitors who come to see them.&nbsp;However, he said he wants to be able to manage his cattle and land without interference from the feds in D.C. The farmer's concerns did not fall on deaf ears. We've had a farm in our family for several generations. It's hard work, and farmers are often left with small profits and big debts.So why go through all this trouble to save this one goofy little bird?&nbsp;Jackie Augustine, organizer of the Prairie Chicken Festival and an expert on the birds, said simply they're cute.More importantly, they are a sign of healthy prairie habitat.<figure>

It encourages it to be done in areas that won't destroy leks.Birders are a passionate group. They have what they call life lists, which include every bird they have seen in their lifetimes. Some birders travel internationally to add to those life lists.The Prairie Chicken Festival attendees, most of whom were from out of state, paid hundreds of dollars in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/audubonofkansas">Audubon</a> fees alone, not to mention food, gas, lodging and entertainment to watch these birds.<figure>

 </figure>Coming to a compromise between maintaining property owner rights and implementing conservation tactics that will preserve the lesser prairie chicken is where we need to be, but that's not where politics are going.Unfortunately, parties in the prairie chicken debate have taken to their corners for a fight. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1f995f9e-3403-4556-b353-c968c3e5e924">Last week, the Kansas Attorney General sued President Biden in an attempt to have the lesser prairie chicken delisted from the threatened species list.</a>This weekend was my third time observing prairie chickens in the wild. They never cease to amaze me. They always make me smile. Their boom ... boom ... boom ... makes me feel more in rhythm.&nbsp;They don't understand land deeds or lawsuits. They are just doing what prairie chickens do.Those who know me, know I am not a morning person. I don't know anyone who is a 3 a.m. morning person. However, as I emerged from our little prairie cocoons Friday morning on lek, I had a huge smile on my face. The hike, no bathroom, the early wakeup, and the cold were worth it.However, as the birds flushed and disappeared into the gray morning Friday, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as I wondered what was next for my feathered friends.<figure>

HERSHEY, NE - The Hershey Fall Fest committee announced Friday morning that red dirt band Muscadine Bloodline will headline the annual festival on Saturday, August 26 downtown Hershey. North Platte's Drew Phillips Band will open for Muscadine Bloodline. The Hershey Fall Festival is the annual end of summer event for the community of Hershey, Nebraska. The event draws individuals from many of the surrounding communities, as well as former Hershey residents that have moved out of the area.

The Fall Festival typically kids off with a golf tournament at Rivers Edge Golf Course in North Platte on Friday evening, then breakfast, Parade and the concert on Saturday. The Hershey Lions Club hosts the festival, and uses their funds to help support local nonprofits, put on vision and health screenings for the students at Hershey Public Schools at no cost to the school or the students, and to provide vision screens and glasses for members of Lincoln County that cannot afford eye care.

Members of North Platte Community College’s Sigma Kappa Delta chapter, Rho Zeta, will launch their fifth annual book drive April 24 to 28.&nbsp;

This year, they are seeking donations of new or gently used children’s books, which will be donated to the pediatric department at Great Plains Health.&nbsp;

SKD is the national English honor society for two-year colleges, and promoting literacy is one its goals.

Previously, Rho Zeta members have collected reading materials for Linden Court, the Lincoln County Detention Center and&nbsp;Richard Young Behavioral Health in Kearney.

Donation boxes will be set up at the welcome centers on NPCC’s north and south campuses as well as at Scooter’s Coffee in North Platte.

North Platte High School’s Advanced Acting class will present a new play, "Dangers of the Crown" at 7 p.m. April 28 and 29. Full of sword fighting, intrigue and betrayal, this show will be sure to have you on the edge of your seat.&nbsp;

The Advanced Acting class has previously presented short scenes for their productions, but "Dangers of the Crown" will mark the first time a full-length student written production has appeared on the NPHS stage. 

Seniors Joseph Roeder and Dana Sorenson penned a majority of the script.&nbsp; Teacher and Director Brittany McDaniel served as adviser and mentor on the project.&nbsp; 

“While we were in the preplanning stages of the class, Dana and Joseph came in with a dry erase board covered in ideas," she said. "They had a whole storyline planned out and said they wanted to give writing a shot.&nbsp; Over the span of about three weeks, the three of us worked together to develop the characters, solidify a cohesive storyline, and write the show.” 

The storyline follows King Caelus and Queen Grecia as their marital feud divides the kingdom and turns everything to rubble.

After the show was written and revised and the parts had been cast, McDaniel and the cast of 13 spent a month and a half rehearsing and preparing.&nbsp; Along with learning all of their lines and memorizing their blocking, the students also had the chance to work with Mark Hardiman, the theatre professor at McCook Community College.&nbsp; Hardiman is a professional fight choreographer and provided blocking for the stage combat and sword fighting sections.&nbsp; “Getting to learn how to wield a sword and make it look real has been a dream come true.&nbsp; I never would have imagined that this is how I would end my high school theatre career,” said Joseph Roeder.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There is a mild content warning for violence and some stronger language.&nbsp;&nbsp;

officially joined the ranks of those holding the elite Accredited Land Consultant Designation on March 7. The Realtors Land Institute provides the expertise,
camaraderie, and resources that are the foundation for all land real estate professionals to

Rickertsen is now among the most dedicated land professionals from around the globe, joining
an elite group of over 600 land specialists who hold the designation across the globe. In addition
to subscribing to the Realtors Code of Ethics, ALCs support the high standards of conduct
and experience that directly relate to their specialty. As an ALC, Rickertsen has access to the
best industry knowledge, an unprecedented network of fellow land professionals, and a variety

Mid-Plains Community College is extending its scholarship application deadline to June 1 to allow more students to take advantage of the many financial opportunities available.&nbsp;

Anyone planning to attend MPCC during the 2023-24 academic year is encouraged to register for an account and fill out an application form at:&nbsp;<a href="https://mpcc.awardspring.com/">mpcc.awardspring.com</a>.

Students will be able to see within their account what scholarships they qualify for and track the progress of their applications. Those who receive an award will be notified through the system&nbsp;and via email. They can then log in to accept or decline the offer.

The deadline extension also applies to&nbsp;Nebraska Career Scholarships, which are available to MPCC students pursuing degrees in program areas leading to high-wage, high-skill and high-demand careers. Recipients must be either first-time students who have not previously enrolled in a postsecondary institution in the past three years and have not previously earned a postsecondary credential or transfer students who are enrolled in an eligible program, live in Nebraska while receiving the scholarship and participate in a Nebraska-based career-related work experience prior to completing their field of study.

Mid-Plains CC extends deadline for scholarship applications

NORTH PLATTE — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged kidnapping. Authorities found the missing 14-year-old girl safe.

Cameron Quintin, 26, Topeka, Kan., was taken into custody on requested charges of kidnapping and violation of child custody. He is being held in Shawnee County without bond.

On Wednesday morning, police reported 14-year-old Gertie Werkmeister was missing. She had last been seen wearing a light blue hooded sweat shirt and black sweatpants. She left Adams Middle School and met with a white male dressed in all black in his mid- to late-20s at the Rec Center.

Just after 10:30 a.m., the two&nbsp; left the Rec Center traveling eastbound on Francis Street in a dark-colored Toyota Tacoma with out-of-state plates.

The North Platte 911 Center issued a citywide RAVE alert to all cell phones and land lines registered with the Smart 911 system. The North Platte Police Department, along with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol searched for her.&nbsp;The Topeka Police Department, The FBI, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation assisted in the search.
