Vendors sought for 2023 North Platte Canteen Festival

United States Attorney 
Steven Russell announced that Alejandro Berrelleza-Bojorquez, 25, of Los
 Angeles was sentenced on April 14, 2023, in federal
court in Lincoln.&nbsp; Senior 
United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced 
Berrelleza-Bojorquez to 76 months in prison for possession with intent 
to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and 100 grams or more
 of fentanyl analogue.&nbsp; After completing his sentence, 
Berrelleza-Bojorquez will be placed on supervised release for 4 years.&nbsp; 
Berrelleza-Bojorquez faces deportation from the United States following 
the service of his sentence.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal
 system.&nbsp; 

On
 March 7, 2022, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle driven
 by Berrelleza-Bojorquez on Interstate 80 in Dawson County for 
speeding.&nbsp; His co-defendant, Orlando Castro-Gutierrez,
 was the passenger.&nbsp; The trooper smelled marijuana odor emanating from 
the vehicle, and the vehicle was searched.&nbsp; In the trunk, law 
enforcement found 10 triple-wrapped bags under clothing. Those bags 
contained about 10,000 pills.&nbsp; Law enforcement also found
 in the trunk 15 zip-lock baggies in a paper sack that contained about 
15,000 pills.&nbsp; The vehicle was towed, and both men were arrested.&nbsp; Upon 
further search after the tow, law enforcement found a 1 kilogram-sized 
brick in a box in the trunk.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sample pills
 from the 10 wrapped bags were tested at the state lab, and the lab 
confirmed that they contained fentanyl.&nbsp; The pills in those ten wrapped 
bags weighed over one kilogram.&nbsp; Sample pills from the 15 zip-lock 
baggies were tested at the lab, and the lab determined
 they contained para-fluorofentanyl, a schedule I substance and analogue
 of fentanyl.&nbsp; The pills from those 15 baggies weighed about one and a 
half kilograms.&nbsp; The brick was tested at the lab as well, and the lab 
confirmed it contained fentanyl.&nbsp;


Castro-Gutierrez is scheduled to plead guilty on May 3, 2023, in Lincoln.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.

Man caught in Dawson Co. sentenced on federal fentanyl charges

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte Noon Rotary Club is hosing their annual Bloodhounds Blood Drive on Wednesday, April 19 from 11am-6pm at Venue 304 downtown North Platte. To date, 2,298 units of blood have been collected in 19 years of this blood drive according to Misty Robertson who is a noon rotarian, and spoke to the Post during a North Platte Kubota podcast last week.

Robertson says one of the cool parts about this particular blood drive is "the competition between organizations". Many have already created a team to collect blood on behalf of area non-profits, and Robertson said "you can start a team at the door if you'd like". The top 3 teams with the most donars on their behalf will get prize money to donate to a cause of that teams choosing. Patrick Jacobson who also joined Eagle's Derek Beck on FM 98.1 to talk about this event said another group he's a part of "North Platte Young Professionals" would donate their winnings to Debra's Legacy if they place in the top 3 in team donations.

20th Bloodhounds Blood Drive this Wednesday in North Platte

LINCOLN —
 Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from Seward 
County Sheriff’s Deputies, arrested a driver and located a missing 
juvenile following a pursuit on Interstate 80 Sunday
 evening. 

At
 approximately 8:40 p.m. Sunday, a trooper observed an eastbound Honda 
Civic speeding on I-80 near Bradshaw, at mile marker
 345. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to 
yield and accelerated to over 100 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a
 pursuit.


Another
 trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to bring the 
vehicle to a stop near mile marker 383. The driver
 and front seat passenger then fled on foot, running across the 
westbound lanes of I-80. Both were quickly taken into custody by 
additional troopers and Seward County deputies. A second passenger 
remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.
 The vehicle was determined to be stolen.

The
 driver, Edwin Portillo Barrientos, 27, Lincoln, was arrested for 
driving with a revoked license, flight to avoid arrest,
 willful reckless driving, theft by receiving stolen property $5,000+, 
and multiple outstanding warrants. He was lodged in York County jail. 
The passenger who fled, a 17-year-old female, had been reported missing.
 She was lodged at the Lancaster County Youth
 Attention Center for an outstanding warrant. The second passenger was 
cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

The entire pursuit lasted approximately 22 minutes.

 Nebraska this week. Over the last few days, NSP has received multiple 
reports of scammers spoofing Nebraska State
 Patrol phone numbers, attempting to scam victims. 

“Scammers
 will use any method they think may work to try to steal your money or 
personal information,” said Colonel John
 Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Scammers often 
attempt to pose as a trusted entity, such as law enforcement. In this 
case, they are posing as Nebraska State Patrol representatives.”

NSP
 has received reports from two different areas of the state regarding 
members of the public receiving phone calls that
 appeared to come from NSP offices in Grand Island or Lincoln. These 
phone calls are referred to as spoofing, an act of mimicking a phone 
number when in reality it is a scammer on the line. The scammer then 
tries to steal personal information by telling the
 victim they have active warrants or need to pay a fine. The call 
recipient has not fallen for the scam in any of the reported occurrences
 in the last few days.


“The Nebraska State Patrol never calls members of the public regarding payment of fines or active warrants,” Bolduc said. “We urge the public to be vigilant with any such phone call and never give out personal information in such cases.”

 provides the following guidance regarding suspicious or potentially 
scam phone calls: Do not provide personal or financial
 information unless you initiated the phone call or are absolutely sure 
you are talking to the intended group. Any reputable organization will 
allow you to hang up and call back so you can ensure you are speaking to
 the correct entity and aren’t being scammed.

The return to a Herbie Husker costume and logo that closely resembles the original version comes as Nebraska celebrates the 50th&nbsp;year of Herbie Husker. Alberts and University leadership have also placed a priority on embracing the Cornhusker tradition and the agricultural background of the state of Nebraska. "Herbie Husker has been one of the iconic symbols of Nebraska Athletics for nearly 50 years," Alberts said.&nbsp; "Our fans are passionate about all things related to the Huskers, and they have a particular fondness for Herbie.&nbsp; We are excited to present modernized Herbie Husker marks and logos and thrilled to unveil our new Herbie mascot at Saturday's spring game." Led by Director of Licensing Lonna Henrichs and Spirit Squad Head Coach Erynn Butzke, Nebraska Athletics began working with Torch Creative in January of 2022 to develop the new logos.&nbsp; Throughout the process, the focus remained on digitally updating the beloved Herbie mark that features blonde hair, overalls, and an ear of corn in his pocket. After a windy and warm start to the work week, the National Weather Service in North Platte is warning of the possibility of severe storms — mainly in areas east of Highway 183.

While pastureland across central and north-central Kansas is greening up, the NWS also warned that low humidity and highs in the upper-70s Monday and Tuesday will lead to an elevated risk of wildfires.

Wednesday will see the mercury begin to dip, with a high of just 50 degrees predicted by Friday.

There is a 20 percent chance of precipitation in the early morning hours Wednesday. The chance of showers continues into Friday afternoon.

The Hot Sheets: April 17, 2023

Four Mid-Plains Community College students have been named to the&nbsp;<a>2023 Phi Theta Kappa All-Nebraska Academic Team</a>.&nbsp;

They are Tiara Matson and Anna Miller, both from McCook and representing the McCook chapter, and Kathy Welte, of Brady, and Tessa Metschke, of O’Neill, representing the North Platte chapter.

PTK advisors from Mid-Plains campuses in McCook and North Platte were allowed to nominate two PTK members per campus.

The students were recognized during an awards ceremony Wednesday at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln.

PTK introduced state academic teams in 1994 to provide scholastic recognition to members, while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. The excellence aspect includes academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service among other criteria.

Additionally, Miller and Welte were selected for the Coca-Cola Academic Team. The recognition is given to high-achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

Every year, 50 students are chosen to be Gold Scholars, 50 are designated as Silver Scholars and 50 are deemed Bronze Scholars. Miller was honored as a Gold Scholar and Welte was named a Bronze Scholar.

In Nebraska, 26 fatal crashes in 2020 involved drivers under the influence of drugs. In 2021, that number grew to 35. 

Law enforcement is trying to stop it.&nbsp; From April 19 through April 23, the North Platte Police Department, in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Transportation, will participate in a “Drug Impaired Driving” enforcement grant.&nbsp; 

Additional officers will be on the streets and highways looking for traffic violations, with an emphasis on impaired driving.&nbsp; The North Platte Police Department encourages impaired drivers to find alternate means of transportation, such as catching a ride from a sober friend.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: April 16, 2023

Tessa Metschke is North Platte Community College’s 2023 student commencement speaker. Metschke plans to highlight the support she has received and relationships she has made at NPCC when she gives her address next month.

“I wanted to focus my speech on support because that is all I have ever received from any person at this school,” Metschke said. “Support is campus-wide, and I see it in all facets. I see support from faculty, smiling faces in the learning commons, our amazing janitorial staff, athletic coaches and sponsors. Having this support is what makes us succeed.”

Metschke, who is originally from Chambers, fell in love with NPCC the first time she set foot on campus.

“I chose NPCC because, when I came on the tour, it felt like a home away from home,” Metschke said. “I liked the foundation that Coach [Alexa] McCall’s volleyball program had. I knew coming to NPCC was going to set me up for success athletically and also academically.”

Metschke played on the Knights volleyball team both years that she attended NPCC. She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, worked as a student aid in the biology department and served as both a math and chemistry tutor.

Metschke has been on the President’s List every semester and earlier this week she was named to the 2023 Phi Theta Kappa All-Nebraska Academic Team.

Her selection was based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service among other criteria.

Metschke was also chosen for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s 2021-22 NJCAA All-Academic First Team last summer for achieving a 4.0 GPA.&nbsp;

Metschke will receive an Associate of Science degree at commencement. She plans to transfer to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall to finish the last two prerequisites she needs for pharmacy school.

“After a year at Lincoln, my hopes are to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha to get my PharmD license,” Metschke said.&nbsp;

She credits NPCC for preparing her – not just for a university setting, but for life beyond.

“I learned so much and had such great experiences at NPCC,” Metschke said. “I gained confidence in myself that I never had before. I learned from some of the best instructors, which is such a blessing. I am so grateful I started my journey at NPCC, and I will be forever thankful for the instructors that helped me grow as a student. NPCC may just be a short period of time in my life, but it has shaped and molded me for the next steps.”

The public is invited to hear Metschke’s commencement speech at 3 p.m. May 12. The ceremony will be in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium&nbsp;on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

Summer classes for kids open at Prairie Arts Center

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. — Both directions of travel on Interstate 80 between North Platte and Brady are now open after a lengthy closure following a crash and hazardous&nbsp;materials spill Thursday.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 187 on eastbound I-80. The crash involved two semis, one of which was hauling large barrels of the chemical&nbsp;ITCS-TRY4, 1-10% Hydroxylamine. Many of the barrels fell into the median, causing a few to leak.

The scene was immediately secured, and traffic was diverted off I-80 to Highway 30 in expectation of a long-term closure. The crash resulted in only minor injuries for one of the drivers. The other driver was not injured.

The North Platte Fire Department, Maxwell Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Nebraska Department of Transportation responded to help secure the scene. The Nebraska Hazardous Incident Team (NHIT) also responded, which includes State Troopers and representatives from the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office and other agencies.

Responders determined there was no danger to any nearby populations, the closest of which was Maxwell, approximately two miles away. The NHIT responders were able to successfully contain any leaks to the barrels. The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy was also contacted for assistance.

A specialized cleanup crew from EnviroServe responded from Colorado to safely handle removal of the hazardous materials. That process began Friday morning and concluded early Friday afternoon, at which time it was safe for tow operators and NDOT crews to clear the roadway for traffic. Westbound I-80 reopened to traffic at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday. Eastbound lanes opened at approximately 6:00 p.m. Friday.
