NORTH PLATTE, NEB - It's the last day of the 2023 Rail Days festival and the model train show is going on at the D&amp;N Event Center. The event runs from 9am - 3pm. There will be a pancake feed from 9am to 11am. After the model train show ends, there will be an ice cream social at the event center. Tractors Trucks Planes & Trains Big Hit

Every day in Nebraska: at least one person dies from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), three people are hospitalized and over 24 people a day visit the emergency department because of TBI.&nbsp;Jason Hansen survived a devastating brain injury in 1996. Through many years of perseverance, hard work, and hope he states that life is “better than before the accident”. This year, together with his wife, Lori, they have been named the 2023 Co-Chairs for CHAD&nbsp;Central and West Nebraska.

Former police officer Jason Hansen’s car flipped and rolled on December 8,&nbsp;1996,&nbsp;and he was ejected out of the glass roof. Although he was able to get immediate assistance, he was hospitalized for two weeks recovering from physical wounds and a closed head injury. He had horrible hallucinations, crippling fear, and anxiety. He suffered from pain and his short-term memory was no longer dependable.

This made continuing with a law enforcement career impossible and he found himself divorced and in need of a new career path. He says it was a dark and angry place to be.&nbsp; However, over the next several years, he read books, remained open to possibilities, and slowly rebuilt his confidence. He married Lori and started a family and new life in North Platte, Nebraska where the two of them own a successful wealth management company, Midwest Family Financial. They ask if you know someone that has had a brain injury, have patience with them. They might be fighting a battle that you do not fully understand.

Jason and Lori Hansen will be sharing their story of hope and success during CHAD’s 2023 Central West campaign season. They will be available to speak at businesses throughout the region. Canon Rath talked with Courtney Hughbanks about the Make A Wish Kearney Evening of Wishes event going on August 17th in Kearney.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Make A Wish Kearney Evening of Wishes event is going on August 17th at 5pm central time, at the Younes Center in Kearney. There is a dress code and its business casual.&nbsp; The event will feature auctions, guest speakers, children who have had their wish granted, and a special wish reveal at the end.&nbsp;

The Make A Wish Kearney Evening of Wishes event is a fundraiser to raise more money for Make A Wish Greater Nebraska. "The funds from this particular event that's held in Kearney is for all kiddos from west of York County," said Courtney Hughbanks, Make A Wish Greater Nebraska Director of Development.&nbsp;

Live Music Tonight in Ogallala

Tryon, Neb. – Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) board member Rusty Kemp, who was&nbsp; appointed by Governor Jim Pillen to the Nebraska Power District Board of Directors last month,&nbsp; today announced his intent to seek the seat after he completes the term of former board member&nbsp; Charlie Kennedy. Kemp currently represents Subdivision 5, which covers 21 west central&nbsp; Nebraska and Panhandle counties.&nbsp;

“Agriculture is the number one industry in the state of Nebraska, and my number one priority is&nbsp; to keep electricity reliable and affordable for Nebraska agriculture and other consumers. We&nbsp; can’t feed people if we can’t keep the lights on, and I look forward to continuing to serve my&nbsp; neighbors on the NPPD Board of Directors,” Kemp said.&nbsp;

Kemp also listed the safety of Nebraska’s energy infrastructure as another focus of his for the&nbsp; Board.&nbsp;

Kemp is self-employed as a cattle rancher in McPherson County and has previously served on&nbsp; the McPherson County School Board as well as the McPherson County Co-Op Credit Union&nbsp; Board. He is also co-founder of Sustainable Beef LLC, a $350 million beef processing facility&nbsp; currently under construction in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kemp and his wife Rachael and their two sons, Cash and Tucker, live on their ranch in&nbsp; McPherson County, Nebraska. They have a cow-calf, yearling operation that produces feeder&nbsp; cattle that are eligible to be exported to any US trading partner through the Global Animal&nbsp; Partnership. Kemp received an agribusiness degree in 1998 from the University of Nebraska at&nbsp; Kearney.&nbsp;

“The Central board voted on Friday and there was not sufficient support by directors to move&nbsp; forward with the consolidation with Dawson Public Power at this time. I respect the board’s&nbsp; decision, and the directors of the District. As President, I will not be scheduling a future vote on&nbsp; amending the charter unless and until there is a change in circumstances that makes it a different&nbsp; matter.&nbsp;

We have plenty of work to do for Central and we need to get at it, not the least of which includes&nbsp; strengthening our financial resources to take on the significant capital improvement projects that&nbsp; lie ahead, including resurfacing Kingsley Dam.&nbsp;

I am glad roughly 130 members of the public came to our meeting on Friday, several of whom&nbsp; shared their perspectives. We are a public entity and elected directors, and the public is always&nbsp; welcome. I hope they continue to come to our upcoming meetings, where they’ll hear directors&nbsp; and management talk about ways to address the challenges facing the district.&nbsp;

That said, I want to publicly condemn tactics used by some of those opposed in recent weeks.&nbsp; Friday there was a completely unacceptable reference to “frontier justice”, implying that directors&nbsp; who vote in favor of the merger may be harmed. Threats to the livelihood of the general public and businesses in the area, as well as directors who might be in favor of the merger are not&nbsp; acceptable and is nothing more than extortion, plain and simple. These tactics have no place in&nbsp; 2023 at a public meeting, no place in our community and region, and reflect poorly on our area. I&nbsp; call on the leadership of the opposition to condemn these tactics as well.”&nbsp;

Today, Central Nebraska Public Power & Irrigation District Board President Dave Rowe released the following statement:

The North Platte Police Department participated in a National Speed Awareness Grant in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.&nbsp; From July 10th&nbsp;to July 31st, 112 hours of overtime hours were logged by participating officers in the enforcement efforts.&nbsp; 182 total traffic contacts were made with a total of fifty-five citations issued department wide.&nbsp; Four arrests were made for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or drugs.&nbsp; Four citations were issued for Driving Under Suspension, six citations were issued for violation of Traffic control devices.

Four felony arrests were made from traffic stops.&nbsp; Two of the felony arrests were made during a traffic stop where 6 grams of methamphetamine were seized.&nbsp;

Eight fugitive arrests were made in conjunction with traffic stops.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

2023 Kites and Castles Winners Announced

Canon Rath talked with Kirsten Parker about the upcoming 2023 Rail Days in North Platte. The three-day event has plenty of events for everyone of all ages to enjoy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The 2023 North Platte Rail Days is just about upon us. The event, which is August 4th - August 6th, has plenty of events for all ages to enjoy. Some events you can possibly enjoy is the tour yard (however folks with VIP passes will have first access to the buses, after that what's left is what's available for tour rides), model train show, Tractors, Trucks, Trains and Planes will be going on Saturday from 11am-2pm, Taste of Nebraska, and so much more.&nbsp;

Rail Days will bring guests from all around the county and the world to North Platte for the three-day event. "We do a lot of preservations for this event, we know of at least 500-600 people coming from outside Nebraska," said Golden Spike Tower Executive Director Kirsten Parker. "We have 30 people coming from different countries that we know of." Throughout the entire event, it's estimated around that 1500 - 5000 guest will be in attendance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(Lincoln, NE) – Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOs) throughout the state of Nebraska benefited from the inaugural semester of the Beyond School Bells (BSB) Youth Leadership Council (YLC).&nbsp;

The council was created to raise youth voice in the afterschool and summer education space in Nebraska, empower high school students to take a leadership role within their program, provide professional development to high school staff, and encourage them to consider education as a career pathway.

Council members were nominated through their work in these educational programs within their communities. These individuals have served as staff members within these programs and were nominated by a leader within the organization.&nbsp;

The following individuals participated in the Youth Leadership Council:&nbsp;

Through this semester-long experience, students brainstorm and propose ways to either improve upon an existing program or fill an unmet need within their afterschool community.&nbsp;

Project topics range from the addition of a life skills afterschool club to increased professional development opportunities for staff. Council members receive training and support throughout this experience so that their final projects include budgets, timelines, and anticipated barriers to implementation.&nbsp;

Local Teens Join Beyond School Bells Youth Leadership Council to Expand Learning Opportunities for Nebraska Afterschool Programs

Mid-Plains Community College will cut the ribbon on its Health and Science Center expansion project Aug. 16.

The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. on the west side of the Health and Science Center, 601 W. State Farm Rd. in North Platte. Both the ceremony and accompanying tours are open to the public.

The Health and Science Center is home to the college’s nursing, medical laboratory technician, emergency medical services, paramedic, dental assisting, math, biology, physics and engineering programs. The original section of the building was constructed in 2012.

As demand for more nurses and health care professionals increased throughout the college’s 18-county service area and beyond, so did the need for more space to train those professionals.

The&nbsp;11,279-square-foot expansion of the Health and Science Center is designed to meet that need. Ground broke on the project May 25, 2022.

The first-floor addition consists of a large, dividable nursing classroom capable of seating 52 people, two group study rooms, a lobby area with seating, an EMS lab outfitted with an ambulance simulator, three nursing simulation rooms,&nbsp;a simulation control room&nbsp;and storage for both EMS and nursing programs.

Features on the second floor include a 52-person capacity dividable microbiology classroom, two conference rooms, two group study rooms,&nbsp;a lobby area with seating built into the walls,&nbsp;a flex room and an immersion room that will be used to train students in a variety of virtual reality simulated environments.

The cost of the project was about $4.7 million. Funding was led by a $500,000 donation from Great Plains Health. Additional funding came from community, regional and state support.

“The&nbsp;North Platte Community College&nbsp;Foundation appreciates the generous supporters that made the project a reality,” said&nbsp;Jake&nbsp;Rissler, the college’s director of Institutional Advancement. “They will all be featured on the soon to be installed donor wall.”

NLU is a six course financial literacy program designed to educate students on budgeting, savings, credit, loans, career development, identity theft protection, paying for college and more.&nbsp; The curriculum combines established financial literacy materials with unique lesson plans created and instructed by Senior and Executive Officers at NebraskaLand Bank.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The August 1st North Platte City Council meeting has officially come and gone and there were different discussion points from the meeting. Some of the main discussion points were appointments and reappointments to the CRA and Library board, inter local emergency management and agreements between North Platte Public Schools and the North Platte Rec Center, micro TIF applications, selection for a constructor manager for the industrial sewer plant and so much more.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The council discussed a inter local for emergency management services during their meeting. The city and Lincoln County have inter local agreements which means they share cost for services in common. "This one is for the emergency management services and that's the EMS system and the folks that do the emergency management, so the county and the city sharing that cost," said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher.&nbsp;
