Summer classes for kids open at Prairie Arts Center

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. — Both directions of travel on Interstate 80 between North Platte and Brady are now open after a lengthy closure following a crash and hazardous&nbsp;materials spill Thursday.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 187 on eastbound I-80. The crash involved two semis, one of which was hauling large barrels of the chemical&nbsp;ITCS-TRY4, 1-10% Hydroxylamine. Many of the barrels fell into the median, causing a few to leak.

The scene was immediately secured, and traffic was diverted off I-80 to Highway 30 in expectation of a long-term closure. The crash resulted in only minor injuries for one of the drivers. The other driver was not injured.

The North Platte Fire Department, Maxwell Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Nebraska Department of Transportation responded to help secure the scene. The Nebraska Hazardous Incident Team (NHIT) also responded, which includes State Troopers and representatives from the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office and other agencies.

Responders determined there was no danger to any nearby populations, the closest of which was Maxwell, approximately two miles away. The NHIT responders were able to successfully contain any leaks to the barrels. The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy was also contacted for assistance.

A specialized cleanup crew from EnviroServe responded from Colorado to safely handle removal of the hazardous materials. That process began Friday morning and concluded early Friday afternoon, at which time it was safe for tow operators and NDOT crews to clear the roadway for traffic. Westbound I-80 reopened to traffic at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday. Eastbound lanes opened at approximately 6:00 p.m. Friday.

Just after 10 a.m. Friday, a Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy observed a vehicle parked unlawfully at Buffalo Bill Campground. 

  The deputy met with Justin Chilcott, 43, and Heather LaManna, 36, both of North Platte. 

  The deputy noticed Chilcott attempting to hide something under the vehicle, and he appeared to be under the influence.  A sheriff'f office K-9 unit arrived — K-9 Kailah — and sniffed the vehicle and indicated drugs were in it.

I-80 now open westbound after nearly 24-hour closure due to accident

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Billionaire Warren Buffett assured investors Wednesday that Berkshire Hathaway will be fine when he's no longer around to lead the conglomerate.

Buffett said that after Vice Chairman Greg Abel&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-d2f5c2d7ddf636c26c4c7db7e27a3a56">takes over,</a>&nbsp;Berkshire will still follow the same model of allowing its subsidiaries to largely run themselves while looking for other companies to buy with the substantial cash reserves it keeps on hand at all times.

“The problem for our board of directors is the day I’m not around and Greg’s running it, I am not giving him some envelope that tells him what to do next,” Buffett said.

Buffett said Berkshire is “so damn lucky” to have Abel ready to take over as CEO. The 92-year-old says he has no plans to retire, but Abel has been designated as the successor ever since Buffett's partner Charlie Munger let it slip at the 2021 annual meeting. Abel already oversees all of Berkshire's non-insurance businesses.

Buffett and Abel appeared together Wednesday on CNBC from Tokyo where they are checking on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffett-berkshire-hathaway-japanese-trading-houses-investments-8ec8de0717ca80845e1db354528a441e">several companies</a>&nbsp;Berkshire has invested in, and to promote the conglomerate Buffett leads.

Wednesday’s appearance was the first extended television interview Buffett has done since before the pandemic. He used to regularly appear on the cable business news network to answer questions for three hours at a time, several times a year. Buffett and Abel fielded a variety of questions Wednesday, including regarding the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bank-failure-federal-reserve-silicon-valley-deposits-d6d3c18793f669fa05c05a0159363026">recent bank failures</a>&nbsp;and whether railroads, including Berkshire's BNSF railroad, need to improve safety in the wake of several recent high-profile derailments.

Buffett said more banks will fail over time because some managers will continue to do “dumb things” to boost short-term profits, but most people shouldn't worry because their money is protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which is paid for by the banks — not the federal government.

“We’re not over bank failures, but depositors haven’t had a crisis,” Buffett said. “Banks go bust, but depositors aren’t going to be hurt.”

Berkshire sold off most of its bank investments in recent years — except for a major Bank of America stake — because of Buffett's concerns.

“I don’t like it when people get too focused on the earnings number and forget what in my view is basic banking principles,” he said.

There has been an intense focus on improving&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">railroad safety</a>&nbsp;in the wake of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-ohio-evacuations-fires-5d399dc745f51ef746e22828083d8591">fiery Feb. 3 Norfolk Southern derailment</a>&nbsp;outside East Palestine, Ohio, that prompted evacuations and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-contamination-fears-brockovich-fc68b402096a4f5f8598a657f7e399f8">lingering health concerns</a>&nbsp;after hazardous chemicals were released.

Buffett said Norfolk Southern “handled it terribly” and was “tone deaf” in their initial response to that derailment. He pointed out that after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-train-derailment-evacuation-ethanol-fire-73cc3e80f616070806f8f8b35191a616">a recent BNSF derailment</a>, CEO Katie Farmer was on a plane right away to respond to the crash. Norfolk Southern's CEO Alan Shaw has repeatedly promised to make things right in East Palestine, but he was slow to meet with residents after the derailment and the railroad missed one of the initial community meetings to answer residents' questions.

Norfolk Southern didn't respond directly to Buffett's comments, but a spokesman noted that Shaw was in East Palestine in the days right after the derailment when officials decided to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-updates-bf5a60de2243cd6f7f730096aa33294c">release chemicals</a>&nbsp;from several tank cars and burn them to prevent an explosion.

Buffett and Abel said it's impossible to ensure there will be no derailments because of everything that's involved in running a railroad in all sorts of conditions, but the industry is generally getting safer over time, and it will get better now.

“There’s no question there’s lessons to be learned for the industry as a whole and there’s room for improvement,” Abel said.

Addressing the broader economy, Buffett said inflation remains a concern and that the reports he sees from Berkshire's businesses point to a economic slowdown.

But he reiterated his longstanding philosophy that Berkshire doesn't make investing decisions based on macroeconomic factors.

“We haven’t changed our course in 58 years," Buffett said. "We want to buy good businesses that are run by people we like and trust at a decent price, and we’ll keep doing that. And we’ll keep buying treasury bills every Monday.”

Buffett did reconsider a $4 billion investment he made last year in chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor after he said he re-evaluated the geopolitical risk that China could intervene in that country and disrupt the company's operations.

But Buffett remains one of Apple's biggest backers even though that company relies heavily on Chinese suppliers because he believes that most iPhone users would refuse to give up their Apple devices even if someone offered them $10,000. That customer loyalty makes Apple, which is Berkshire's biggest investment, attractive.

The famously tech-averse Buffett said thanks to his longtime friendship with Bill Gates, he did have a chance to play around with one of the latest artificial intelligence tools, ChatGPT, a few months ago. He came away impressed after asking ChatGPT to rewrite the song “My Way” in Spanish, but unsure about the implications of the technology.

“I think this is extraordinary, but I don’t know if it is beneficial,” he said.

One thing Buffett is pretty sure is a bad idea is Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. He said people are essentially gambling on cryptocurrencies that he doesn't believe have much value, but he can't predict when the speculation driving those prices up will end.

“I’ve seen people do stupid things all my life,” he said.

Berkshire owns dozens of businesses besides BNSF, including Geico insurance, a number of large utilities and an assortment of manufacturing and retail businesses. It also holds more than $300 billion of investments, including major stakes in Occidental Petroleum and Coca-Cola.

North Platte smashed the high temperature record for April 13 on Thursday, the National Weather Service reported. The high of 95 degrees beat the previous high of 88, set in 2006.

New high temperature records were also set in Broken Bow and Imperial on Thursday.

A significant cooldown has arrived Friday, with a high in the upper-40s expected. There is a 40 percent chance of rain after 1 p.m. Friday, increasing to 60 percent through the evening.

And just a day after nearly reaching triple-digits, the NWS said snow could be on the way, as well. There is a 60 percent chance of snow mixed with rain into Saturday morning. Skies will begin to clear by Saturday evening.&nbsp;

The cool spell is expected to be short-lived, with the mercury ticking back up near 80 by early next week.

Interstate closure leads to Newberry Access congestion

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider staff recommendations for 2023 deer, antelope and elk hunting seasons when it meets April 19 in Fremont.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 2415 N. Lincoln Ave.

A public hearing is scheduled for proposed amendments to Commission orders pertaining to season dates, bag limits, permit quantities and areas open for deer, antelope and elk hunting. The changes will help the agency manage big game populations at socially acceptable levels.

The commissioners also will consider approving a Board Resolution to apply for Transportation Alternatives Program grant funding through the Nebraska Department of Transportation to surface 24.6 miles of Cowboy Trail from Rushville west to mile marker 400.

By Nebraska Game and ParksThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider staff recommendations for 2023 deer, antelope and elk hunting seasons when it meets April 19 in Fremont.The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 2415 N. Lincoln Ave.A public hearing is scheduled for proposed amendments to Commission orders pertaining to season dates, bag limits, permit quantities and areas open for deer, antelope and elk hunting. The changes will help the agency manage big game populations at socially acceptable levels.Staff will recommend:<ul>
 <li>removing 40 general either-sex and 155 general doe/fawn antelope permits,</li><li>including archery season on all Mule Deer Conservation Area permits, making them valid for all open seasons,</li><li>prohibiting antlerless mule deer harvest statewide on all lands open to public hunting, except land in the Open Fields and Water Program,</li><li>reducing the nonresident either-sex and buck only deer permit quota to 10,000, excluding landowner and youth permits,</li><li>reducing the nonresident archery deer permit quota to 3,000 and make it not valid for mule deer in the MDCA,</li><li>reducing the nonresident muzzleloader deer permit quota to 1,000,</li><li>creating a new Plains Whitetail firearm deer permit,</li><li>reducing available November Firearm permits by 5.2% and Antlerless Only Season Choice permits by 7.4%,</li><li>restructuring elk management units,</li><li>adding 36 bull elk permits and 214 antlerless elk permits,</li><li>minor adjustments on other deer, elk and antelope permits to meet management objectives.</li>
 </ul>The commissioners also will consider approving a Board Resolution to apply for Transportation Alternatives Program grant funding through the Nebraska Department of Transportation to surface 24.6 miles of Cowboy Trail from Rushville west to mile marker 400.In other business, commissioners will consider:<ul>
 <li>permanent and temporary easement requests from NDOT for work on Nebraska Highway 7 in Ainsworth and the temporary diversion of the Cowboy Trail there, and</li><li>a staff recommendation to designate Phillips Canyon and Midway Lake, both located near Johnson Lake State Recreation Area in Dawson County, as state recreation areas. Both are located on the Supply Canal and operated by Central Public Power and Irrigation District.</li>

Commission will consider big game hunting recommendations

Just after 5 p.m. Thursday, the Lincoln County 911 Center received a report of a vehicle accident on North Lake Road near the outlet camping area of Lake Maloney, the sheriff's office said in a media release.

  North Platte Fire and Rescue responded, and the lone occupant / driver was pronounced dead at the scene. 

  An accident reconstructionist from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrived to investigate the incident.  Preliminary findings show the vehicle was initially westbound on North Lake Road at a high rate of speed.  The driver attempted to negotiate a large 90-degree corner traveling north. 

 The vehicle left the roadway, the driver overcorrected and slid across the roadway and struck a tree.  The driver was ejected from the vehicle. 

 The driver was identified as Jeffery Howell, 26, North Platte.   Seat belts were not in use, and the investigation into this matter is complete.

North Platte man dead after accident at Lake Maloney

UPDATE 8 a.m. Friday with&nbsp;new information from the Nebraska State Patrol:&nbsp;Interstate 80 remains closed between North Platte and Brady while cleanup from Thursday's accident continues. One of the two semi drivers sustained minor injuries.&nbsp;

Drums of corrosive material being haul by one of the semis fell during the accident, and some ruptured. The leaks are contained, but cleanup continues. There is no danger to the public, the NSP said.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Thursday with new information from the Nebraska State Patrol: The accident that closed Interstate 80 on Thursday afternoon was a two-semi injury accident near Maxwell on eastbound I-80.

The crash has also caused the leak of a corrosive material being hauled in one of the trucks, the NSP reported. The North Platte Fire Department is on scene and additional haz-mat crews including the Nebraska Hazardous Incident Team (which includes personnel from several agencies) is responding to assist in cleanup and management. 

This is likely to be a lengthy closure as the process continues, the NSP said.

LeAnn Cramer, of Curtis, has been selected as North Platte Community College’s Business Student of the Month for April.

Cramer graduated from Medicine Valley High School in 1982. She is currently studying business and accounting at NPCC.

“I initially chose NPCC because it was conveniently close to home,” Cramer said. “I stayed because I love this school. Everyone is so supportive and willing to help, and I have found the confidence to succeed. In every class, in every semester, I found faculty willing to answer my questions and make me feel comfortable. What a gift that has been. As a non-traditional student, I was very nervous about fitting in. I’m having so much fun.”

Cramer is on track to earn an Associate of Science Degree in July. Her goal is to use her education to expand her bookkeeping and administrative support business, PrairieWinds Administrative Solutions, to help small businesses in rural communities succeed.

“LeAnn is a wonderful student to have in class,” said Business Instructor Cathy Nutt. “She is always prepared, has reviewed the material, is personable and positively contributes to the course whether it is face-to-face or online. She takes the opportunity to complete her education seriously and can be found studying or working on homework between class times. LeAnn is a dedicated individual who represents the division and NPCC well and is deserving of being recognized as Business Student of the Month.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Outside of school, Cramer enjoys working with individuals with special needs and helping them realize their potential. She also loves rural Nebraska and spending every minute she can at the lake with her kids and grandkids.&nbsp;

Curtis student named North Platte CC Business Student of the Month

Great Plains Health has been selected to receive the 2023 President’s Award from Mid-Plains Community College. The health system will be recognized at the college’s commencement ceremony in North Platte next month.

“GPH has been a great partner of MPCC in providing opportunities for all our health occupation programs,” said MPCC President Ryan Purdy. “It is the only regional medical center in our 18-county service area, and we could not prepare our students to be successful without its unwavering support.”

Located in North Platte, GPH is a nonprofit, fully accredited, 116-bed regional referral center serving western Nebraska, northern Kansas and northern Colorado. Its primary and secondary service areas span approximately 67,832 square miles - about the size of the state of Pennsylvania.

With nearly 100 physicians representing 30 medical specialties, the GPH system offers advanced medical services, including heart and vascular, cancer, orthopedic services, women’s services and a level III trauma center.

The system employs approximately 1,100 employees and has more than 200 volunteers. GPH has approximately 183,000 patient encounters per month and houses western Nebraska’s only heart institute, wound healing center and Level 2 neonatal intensive care unit.

GPH has been a strong financial supporter of the health education provided by MPCC. Most recently, GPH contributed $500,000 to the college’s Health and Science Center expansion project. That’s in addition to the $1.5 million GPH pledged to the&nbsp;initial construction of the building.

GPH also provides&nbsp;a rich learning environment for the nursing students at MPCC. Presently, GPH is hosting senior nursing students in the Capstone Preceptorship Program, which is in its second year of successfully pairing practicing registered nurses with student nurses in their last quarter of the nursing program to help foster the transition from student to professional nurse.

“Great Plains Health provides the nursing students with the opportunity for experience in a wide variety of nursing areas and specialties, helping to shape their interests in the nursing profession,” said MPCC Nurse Educator and Clinical Coordinator Lana Albrecht-Watson. “There are many community events that the Mid-Plains nursing department and Great Plains Health collaborate on – such as student participation in the flu vaccine clinics and the annual stroke clinic.”

GPH also invites MPCC students and faculty to attend select educational presentations, both online and in person.

“GPH employs our nursing students as nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses while they are in the program,” said MPCC Director of Nursing Dr. Kathy Harrison. “The managers work with the students to help them achieve a good work, life and school balance.”

Great Plains Health to be honored with MPCC President’s Award

LINCOLN — Registration is open for most sports in the 39th annual Cornhusker State Games, which take place July 14 to 30 in Lincoln, Omaha and several other Nebraska communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska Sports Council officials announced 
this week that participants registered by June 21 will receive “Summer Fun
 Freebies” including a CSG shirt, Arby’s Roast Beef sandwich and 
vouchers for free admission to several attractions, including a Saltdogs
 baseball game, a Storm Chasers baseball game, the Nebraska State Fair, 
the Lancaster Super Fair and the NEBRASKAland Days Rodeo.

More than 1,500 Nebraskans are already registered 
for the mid-summer sports festival, which offers competition in more 
than 70 sports for athletes of all ages and abilities.&nbsp;More than 10,000

LINCOLN — During the month of March, 19 people were killed in traffic crashes
on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.


• These 19 fatalities occurred in 18 fatal crashes. • Eight of the fourteen vehicle occupants killed were not using seatbelts, one was using a seatbelt, and

NDOT releases March traffic fatalities report

WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) joined 40 of his colleagues in re-introducing a bill to permanently repeal the federal estate tax, commonly known as the death tax.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.capito.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/03-30-2023%20Death%20Tax%20Repeal%20Act.pdf" target="_blank">The&nbsp;Death Tax Repeal Act</a>&nbsp;would repeal the estate and generation-skipping transfer taxes that harm multi-generational farms, ranches, and businesses in the wake of the owner’s death. U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD) is the original sponsor of this legislation.

The high Thursday was expected to reach the low-90s, the National Weather Service reported. North Platte set a record-high temperature for April 12 at 93 —breaking a mark that had stood since 1899. Imperial, Broken Bow and Valentine also all recorded record highs for the date.

Some relief could be possible in the form of precipitation. There is a 20 percent chance of rain Thursday night into Saturday. Winds will shift and bring cooler air, as well. The daytime high Friday and Saturday is only expected to reach the low- to mid-50s.

Skies will clear by Sunday, when the high is expected to be in the mid-60s. By early next week, the mercury will begin to tick back to the 80s.

Red flag warnings and a new record high temperature

UPDATED 11:45 a.m. April 13:&nbsp;The deceased female found on April 9 has been identified as Bernadette Lopez, 42, of Cheyenne, Wyo. Preliminary results of the autopsy showed Lopez died from hypothermia seven to ten days prior to finding her.

The locomotive was towed into Bailey yard from Cheyenne on April 8 which means Lopez died in Cheyenne, Wyo. The investigation into this matter by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has been closed and turned over to the Cheyenne Police Department.

At 9:25 a.m. Sunday, the Lincoln County 911 Center received a call from Union Pacific Railroad reporting they had found a deceased female on a locomotive.

The locomotive was inside Bailey Yards but had recently been towed in for repairs from Cheyenne, Wyo.

Deputies and Investigators from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Investigators discovered the female wedged in a small generator room located just behind the cab of the locomotive. It appeared the female had recently passed away and she had no identification.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death and help identify the female. Investigators are working with the Cheyenne Police Department on this case.

The Hot Sheets: April 13, 2023

The NSAA voted on Wednesday morning 7-1 in favor of adding a shot clock for Class B Boys and Girls basketball starting in the 2023-24 season. Class A was the only class that had a shot clock in the 2022-23 season while every other class didn't run a shot clock.

Class A was the only class that had a shot clock in the 2022-23 season while every other class didn't run a shot clock.

SEATTLE – University of Nebraska at Kearney student Jessica Klingelhoefer was recently recognized as a Health Education Major of the Year by SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.

She was honored March 30 during the organization’s 137th National Convention and Expo in Seattle, Washington. The award celebrates outstanding undergraduate students in the health, physical education, recreation and dance professions who are nominated by a faculty adviser or professor. Klingelhoefer also received the Ruth Abernathy Undergraduate Scholarship at the SHAPE America Convention.

“The outstanding achievements of future professionals like Jessica are integral to the future of SHAPE America and our profession,” said SHAPE America President Kymm Ballard, a professor at Campbell University.

A senior from Grant, Klingelhoefer serves as president of UNK’s Health and Physical Education Club and as a student representative on the SHAPE Nebraska Board. She was named the 2022 Health Education Major of the Year by SHAPE Nebraska last fall and has presented numerous times at the state conference.

Klingelhoefer is active in numerous campus activities and organizations, including the Alpha Phi sorority, Order of Omega honor society and undergraduate research. She’s volunteered with Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day, Special Olympics, the UNK home-school program, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Loper Leaders.

“Educating students on being lifelong learners and movers is a passion of mine and I am beyond thankful for all the opportunities UNK and SHAPE have offered me throughout my undergraduate experience,” she said.

Klingelhoefer is student teaching this semester at Lincoln Public Schools. She’ll graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education with a math endorsement before beginning her teaching career this fall.

SHAPE America is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. Since its founding in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in physical education. Its national standards for K-12 physical education serve as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country.

UNK senior recognized as national Health Education Major of the Year

LINCOLN — Dry, windy conditions are helping start fire season early in Nebraska in 2023.

Three wildfires, in Jefferson County in southeast Nebraska, Garfield 
County in the center part of the state, and Cherry County near the South
 Dakota border, were burning as of Wednesday evening.

“Critical” fire weather is expected for the next two days, according to&nbsp;Jodie Fawl of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.

Fire season, she said, used to begin in July and extend into autumn, but now is considered to be year round.

In 2022, Fawl said, major wildfires were reported in each month of the year — a year that turned out to be the <a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/11/07/nebraska-on-pace-for-second-worst-wildfire-year-ever-2023-outlook-is-dim/#:~:text=LINCOLN%20%E2%80%94%20Worsening%20drought%2C%20coupled%20with,year%20for%20wildfires%20in%20Nebraska.">second worst for wildfires</a> in state history.

 <li>The McCann Fire in Cherry County, which was reportedly 30% contained
 after burning 7,040 acres. The fire started southwest of Kilgore and 
required the evacuation of the village for a while Tuesday.&nbsp;NEMA liaison
 Chris Schroeder said local first responders stopped the blaze two miles
 south of town, and no structures were lost. The focus Wednesday, he 
said, was to hold that line and work hotspots in canyon areas.</li><li>The Rock Creek Fire in Jefferson County had consumed 2,600 acres by 
Wednesday evening and was said to be the largest fire in that area in 
recent years. Fifty volunteer firefighters were on scene. The fire was 
at 60% containment.&nbsp;John McKee, emergency manager for Saline and 
Jefferson Counties, told<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newschannelnebraska.com/story/48706954/crews-work-on-structure-protection-hot-spots-in-rock-creek-fire-wednesday"> News Channel Nebraska</a>
 that firefighters did “an excellent job” protecting buildings at Rock 
Creek Station State Historical Park that had been rebuilt in recent 
years.&nbsp;A Nebraska National Guard hand crew was on the scene, along with a
 National Guard UH-60 helicopter.</li><li>The Lowry Fire in Garfield County burned 6,000 acres, 15 miles north
 of Burwell, but mop-up operations have begun.&nbsp;Two injuries were 
reported and four structures were destroyed, including a storage 
building at the Rowes Hydraulic Rake Manufacturing Plant, 22 miles north
 of Burwell, Fawl said.&nbsp;Eight homes and a church were threatened, she 
said. Local aviation dropped water on the fire.</li>
