SEATTLE – University of Nebraska at Kearney student Jessica Klingelhoefer was recently recognized as a Health Education Major of the Year by SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.

She was honored March 30 during the organization’s 137th National Convention and Expo in Seattle, Washington. The award celebrates outstanding undergraduate students in the health, physical education, recreation and dance professions who are nominated by a faculty adviser or professor. Klingelhoefer also received the Ruth Abernathy Undergraduate Scholarship at the SHAPE America Convention.

“The outstanding achievements of future professionals like Jessica are integral to the future of SHAPE America and our profession,” said SHAPE America President Kymm Ballard, a professor at Campbell University.

A senior from Grant, Klingelhoefer serves as president of UNK’s Health and Physical Education Club and as a student representative on the SHAPE Nebraska Board. She was named the 2022 Health Education Major of the Year by SHAPE Nebraska last fall and has presented numerous times at the state conference.

Klingelhoefer is active in numerous campus activities and organizations, including the Alpha Phi sorority, Order of Omega honor society and undergraduate research. She’s volunteered with Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day, Special Olympics, the UNK home-school program, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Loper Leaders.

“Educating students on being lifelong learners and movers is a passion of mine and I am beyond thankful for all the opportunities UNK and SHAPE have offered me throughout my undergraduate experience,” she said.

Klingelhoefer is student teaching this semester at Lincoln Public Schools. She’ll graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education with a math endorsement before beginning her teaching career this fall.

SHAPE America is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. Since its founding in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in physical education. Its national standards for K-12 physical education serve as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country.

LINCOLN — Dry, windy conditions are helping start fire season early in Nebraska in 2023.

Three wildfires, in Jefferson County in southeast Nebraska, Garfield 
County in the center part of the state, and Cherry County near the South
 Dakota border, were burning as of Wednesday evening.

“Critical” fire weather is expected for the next two days, according to&nbsp;Jodie Fawl of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.

Fire season, she said, used to begin in July and extend into autumn, but now is considered to be year round.

In 2022, Fawl said, major wildfires were reported in each month of the year — a year that turned out to be the <a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/11/07/nebraska-on-pace-for-second-worst-wildfire-year-ever-2023-outlook-is-dim/#:~:text=LINCOLN%20%E2%80%94%20Worsening%20drought%2C%20coupled%20with,year%20for%20wildfires%20in%20Nebraska.">second worst for wildfires</a> in state history.

 after burning 7,040 acres. The fire started southwest of Kilgore and 
required the evacuation of the village for a while Tuesday.&nbsp;NEMA liaison
 Chris Schroeder said local first responders stopped the blaze two miles
 south of town, and no structures were lost. The focus Wednesday, he 
said, was to hold that line and work hotspots in canyon areas.</li><li>The Rock Creek Fire in Jefferson County had consumed 2,600 acres by 
Wednesday evening and was said to be the largest fire in that area in 
recent years. Fifty volunteer firefighters were on scene. The fire was 
at 60% containment.&nbsp;John McKee, emergency manager for Saline and 
Jefferson Counties, told<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newschannelnebraska.com/story/48706954/crews-work-on-structure-protection-hot-spots-in-rock-creek-fire-wednesday"> News Channel Nebraska</a>
 that firefighters did “an excellent job” protecting buildings at Rock 
Creek Station State Historical Park that had been rebuilt in recent 
years.&nbsp;A Nebraska National Guard hand crew was on the scene, along with a
 National Guard UH-60 helicopter.</li><li>The Lowry Fire in Garfield County burned 6,000 acres, 15 miles north
 of Burwell, but mop-up operations have begun.&nbsp;Two injuries were 
reported and four structures were destroyed, including a storage 
building at the Rowes Hydraulic Rake Manufacturing Plant, 22 miles north
 of Burwell, Fawl said.&nbsp;Eight homes and a church were threatened, she 
said. Local aviation dropped water on the fire.</li>

North Platte Community College’s end-of-year concert May 3 will feature a movie theme and a guest appearance by Hershey High School students.&nbsp;

“We invite everyone to come enjoy ‘A Night at the Movies’,” said NPCC Music Instructor Kristin Simpson. “It has been so fun preparing the music. We are excited to present the songs and to have the audience guess what movies the music comes from.”

Selections will include: “Down to the River to Pray,” “Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying,” “The&nbsp;Jazz Police,”&nbsp;“I Got Rhythm” and “The Magic of Harry Potter.”

The following NPCC students will be showcased: Karissa Jackson, of Cozad; Dustin Cartmill, of Gothenburg; LaReina Colton, of Imperial; Trenton Emmons, of McCook, and Don Kurre, Hannah Langley, Lisa Pickett, Anja Tejral and Cole Vencill, all of North Platte.

The high school students, directed by Rebecca Brittenham, will play one piece on their own and another alongside members of the college’s jazz band, The Jazzy Knights.&nbsp;NPCC’s concert choir, The Knightly Singers, are also part of the lineup.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. A reception will follow in the McDonald-Belton fireplace area.

The event is free and open to the public. Popcorn will be available for purchase as part of a fundraiser for NPCC’s chapter of the National Association for Music Education.

NWS: Red flag warnings, record heat in North Platte area

We would like to notify the public that due to an accident late yesterday afternoon at the railroad crossing at West 20th St. and Railway, that the crossing arms were damaged. Because of this damage the crossing was closed. 

The crossing has been blocked by barricades and will remain so until BNSF can replace the damaged equipment. 

Please use alternate routes around this crossing.

BNSF railroad crossing in Scotts Bluff Co. closed due to accident

Wildfires in at least six counties were reported Tuesday afternoon because of dry and windy conditions across Nebraska. 

 Fire departments in Cherry, Garfield, Jefferson, Lincoln, Rock and Wheeler counties responded to wildfires. Kilgore residents in Cherry County evacuated as a precaution, but that evacuation has been lifted. 

The Lincoln County fire was in mop-up stages as of Tuesday evening. 

Local officials in Cherry and Garfield counties have declared emergencies and requested state assistance in the form of aerial application of retardant and water. 

Gov. Jim Pillen has authorized state assistance for Cherry and Garfield counties. Local applicators were also contacted to drop water on the fires.Critical fire weather conditions will continue Wednesday. Low humidity and gusty winds will continue tomorrow. Fires that develop will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Nebraska Emergency ManagementWildfires in at least six counties were reported Tuesday afternoon because of dry and windy conditions across Nebraska. Fire departments in Cherry, Garfield, Jefferson, Lincoln, Rock and Wheeler counties responded to wildfires. Kilgore residents in Cherry County evacuated as a precaution, but that evacuation has been lifted. The Lincoln County fire was in mop-up stages as of Tuesday evening. Local officials in Cherry and Garfield counties have declared emergencies and requested state assistance in the form of aerial application of retardant and water. Gov. Jim Pillen has authorized state assistance for Cherry and Garfield counties. Local applicators were also contacted to drop water on the fires.Critical fire weather conditions will continue Wednesday. Low humidity and gusty winds will continue tomorrow. Fires that develop will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. The Calibraska Arts Initiative has announced the dates for its lineup of online classes as well as its 2023 summer tour stop in North Platte.

Calibraska uses the arts to build community, culture and inclusive educational exchanges between Nebraskans and primarily California/Los Angeles-based industry professionals.

This year, an animation class and a music video camp will be offered in person July 17-21 in the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus.

Animation 1.0 is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon each day. Open to ages 7-12, the class will examine the theories that apply to all animation techniques. Participants will animate paper, clay and more to learn basic animation principles. No previous animation or drawing experience is necessary.

The music video camp will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. It will provide a unique experience for creative students to learn how to make music videos using techniques from both live action and animation.

Instruction will include the basics of animation and video production while exploring the many ways to combine image and sound. As with the animation class, no prior experience is required.

Creative Writing for Adults, Creative Writing for Teens, Photography and Acting are some of the many online classes Calibraska is offering.

Calibraska is also launching a series of free virtual drawing workshops with partner organization Nickelodeon Animation Studio.

Those workshops will be every Tuesday June 6-27 and July 11-18. Sessions will be from 2-2:30 p.m. (CDT) for kindergarten through fifth grades and from 3-4 p.m. (CDT) for grades 6-12.&nbsp;

Scholarships are available for both the in-person and online classes. Those interested in receiving more information about a course, or in registering, can visit&nbsp;<a href="http://www.calibraska.org/">calibraska.org</a>.

Calibraska plans return to North Platte

Mike Jacobson, President and CEO of NebraskaLand Bank, recently&nbsp; announced the Board of Directors approved the following promotions of 
several individuals to new leadership positions within

NebraskaLand Bank announces employee promotions

LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Patrol has completed a week-long campaign focused on distracted driving. Last week, troopers issued seven citations for using a handheld wireless communication device while driving.&nbsp;

“Distracted driving crashes claim an average of more than 3,000 lives across the country every year,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We’re asking all drivers to commit to safe driving with a simple two-step process: buckle up and put your phone down every time you get behind the wheel.”

During the&nbsp;U Drive. U Text. U Pay.&nbsp;campaign, troopers also arrested 25 drivers for impaired driving. Troopers also issued citations for speeding (489), no seat belt (14), improper child restraint (3), driving under suspension (37), open alcohol container (13), and minor in possession (7). Troopers also assisted 215 motorists on Nebraska roadways.

The effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. The campaign ran from April 3 through April 9.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The Nebraska Department of Transportation has a number of resources available to educate young drivers on the dangers of distracted driving. Library bringing cosplay contest to North Platte in May

NebraskaLand Bank is inviting the
 community to give back and help save lives on April 21. The 
bank's main location at 1400 S Dewey Street will be hosting a blood 
drive from noon to 4 pm. This event was coordinated
 by a team of NebraskaLand Bank employees participating in their 25th 
anniversary project, Project Blank.

Project Blank is an initiative that challenges 
NebraskaLand Bank employees to come up with creative projects that will 
benefit their local communities. Through this project, the bank hopes to
 not only provide much-needed aid but also give
 its employees an opportunity to use their skills and ingenuity for 
good. The team coordinating this blood drive is particularly passionate 
about saving lives and giving the gift of blood.

“Blood donations are essential for treating 
patients in emergency situations,” said Brandi Summers, Project Blank 
team leader at NebraskaLand Bank. “We want our community to know that 
they can make a difference by donating blood and help
 those who need it most.”

Donating blood is easy and only takes about an hour
 of your time. Blood is a perishable product that can only come from 
generous volunteers. By donating blood, individuals can make a 
difference in the lives of patients in their community
 and throughout the nation. 

To make an appointment or to learn more, download 
the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 
1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any 
Alexa Echo device. Completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the 
donation process. To get started, follow the instructions at 
RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. A blood donor 
card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification
 are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most 
states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at 
least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to 
donate blood. High school students and other donors
 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight
 requirements.


NebraskaLand Bank is proud to be able to offer this life-saving service to its community members through its Project Blank initiative. All donors will receive free snacks, beverages and T-shirts.

Parents will be able to peruse upcoming offerings for children during a Youth Summer Sign-Up Day scheduled for 3:30 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Platte Recreation Center.

It’s the first time for the event, which is designed as a “one-stop shop” to save parents time and effort by bringing local youth organizations under one roof to promote their programs.

Approximately 20 organizations from the North Platte area will be on hand to provide details and answer questions about their summer events. Summer sign-up day for youth Tuesday at rec center

Union, Nebraska —Gov. Jim Pillen&nbsp;and&nbsp;Maj Gen. Daryl Bohac&nbsp;toured the Waconda-Beaver Lake Complex Fire,&nbsp;Monday to survey the fires that burned approximately 697 acres in Cass County on Saturday and Sunday in Cass County.

About 40 firefighters continued mop up operations on the fires Monday.

Gov. Pillen thanked volunteer firefighters for their hard work on the response. He reported 90 percent containment on the Beaver Lake Fire and 85 percent containment on the Waconda Lake Fire. Rain from Sunday Night to Monday morning raised the humidity and reduced wind speed helping to stop the spread of the fire.

No structures burned or injuries were reported on the fire. More than 75 firefighters from more than 30 departments worked the fire which started in Iowa over the weekend.

State resources will demobilize Monday evening including the Incident Management Assistance Team, the Wildland Incident Assessment Response Team and both the Nebraska National Guard UH 60 crew and hand crew. In addition to state resources local emergency managers in the southeast region of the state will also demobilize. Local crews will continue to monitor and respond to any issues.

Cass County Emergency Management and the incident commanders for the fire expressed appreciation for the many volunteer fire departments that responded to the fires including: Ashland; Avoca; Bennett; Boone; Buffalo County Strike; Dunbar; Elmwood; Fairbury; Gering 1; Gibbon 41; Gretna; Hall-Howard; Ithica; Louisville; Little Sioux, Iowa; Malcolm; Manely; Mead; Mondamin, Iowa; Murdock; Murry; Nebraska National Guard Hand Crew; Nebraska City; Nehawka; Offutt; Peru; Plattsmouth; Raymond; Sutton; Southwest Fire District from Lancaster County; Rural Talamage; Tecumseh; Unadilla; Waverly and Weeping Water.

In addition, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army assisted in the response.

Community members donated plenty of supplies including water and food to the first responders. No further donations of water or food are needed. Anyone wanting to make further donations can make financial donations to the local volunteer fire departments.

North Platte High School announces new basketball head coach

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m. Monday: A red flag warning has been issued from noon to 9 p.m. for the North Platte area.

Tuesday is expected to bring near-record high temperatures to the region, the National Weather Service in North Platte said.&nbsp;

Tuesday forecasted high is 85 in North Platte, increasing to the upper-80s on Wednesday.

The spike in the mercury will be accompanied by strong south winds, which has led to a red flag warning being put into effect from noon to 9 a.m. Tuesday. South winds will be sustained at 15 to 25 mph, gusting up to 40 mph.

The next chance of precipitation in the long-term forecast is a chance of showers Thursday evening.

The North Platte Police Department participated in the “U Text U Pay"&nbsp; high-visibility traffic enforcement Mobilization from April 3 to 9.&nbsp;

Twelve officers worked over 100 hours of extra overtime focusing on traffic violations.&nbsp;

Thirty-two citations were written department wide, along with 79 warning tickets. 

Four arrests were made on outstanding warrants, one of which was a fugitive from Minnesota.&nbsp; Two arrests were made for driving under suspension. Four arrests were made for felony drug possession. Six grams of suspected methamphetamine along with prescription controlled substances were seized.
