drive from noon to 4 pm. This event was coordinated
 by a team of NebraskaLand Bank employees participating in their 25th 
anniversary project, Project Blank.

Project Blank is an initiative that challenges 
NebraskaLand Bank employees to come up with creative projects that will 
benefit their local communities. Through this project, the bank hopes to
 not only provide much-needed aid but also give
 its employees an opportunity to use their skills and ingenuity for 
good. The team coordinating this blood drive is particularly passionate 
about saving lives and giving the gift of blood.

“Blood donations are essential for treating 
patients in emergency situations,” said Brandi Summers, Project Blank 
team leader at NebraskaLand Bank. “We want our community to know that 
they can make a difference by donating blood and help
 those who need it most.”

Donating blood is easy and only takes about an hour
 of your time. Blood is a perishable product that can only come from 
generous volunteers. By donating blood, individuals can make a 
difference in the lives of patients in their community

Parents will be able to peruse upcoming offerings for children during a Youth Summer Sign-Up Day scheduled for 3:30 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Platte Recreation Center.

It’s the first time for the event, which is designed as a “one-stop shop” to save parents time and effort by bringing local youth organizations under one roof to promote their programs.

Approximately 20 organizations from the North Platte area will be on hand to provide details and answer questions about their summer events. Summer sign-up day for youth Tuesday at rec center

Union, Nebraska —Gov. Jim Pillen&nbsp;and&nbsp;Maj Gen. Daryl Bohac&nbsp;toured the Waconda-Beaver Lake Complex Fire,&nbsp;Monday to survey the fires that burned approximately 697 acres in Cass County on Saturday and Sunday in Cass County.

About 40 firefighters continued mop up operations on the fires Monday.

Gov. Pillen thanked volunteer firefighters for their hard work on the response. He reported 90 percent containment on the Beaver Lake Fire and 85 percent containment on the Waconda Lake Fire. Rain from Sunday Night to Monday morning raised the humidity and reduced wind speed helping to stop the spread of the fire.

No structures burned or injuries were reported on the fire. More than 75 firefighters from more than 30 departments worked the fire which started in Iowa over the weekend.

State resources will demobilize Monday evening including the Incident Management Assistance Team, the Wildland Incident Assessment Response Team and both the Nebraska National Guard UH 60 crew and hand crew. In addition to state resources local emergency managers in the southeast region of the state will also demobilize. Local crews will continue to monitor and respond to any issues.

Cass County Emergency Management and the incident commanders for the fire expressed appreciation for the many volunteer fire departments that responded to the fires including: Ashland; Avoca; Bennett; Boone; Buffalo County Strike; Dunbar; Elmwood; Fairbury; Gering 1; Gibbon 41; Gretna; Hall-Howard; Ithica; Louisville; Little Sioux, Iowa; Malcolm; Manely; Mead; Mondamin, Iowa; Murdock; Murry; Nebraska National Guard Hand Crew; Nebraska City; Nehawka; Offutt; Peru; Plattsmouth; Raymond; Sutton; Southwest Fire District from Lancaster County; Rural Talamage; Tecumseh; Unadilla; Waverly and Weeping Water.

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m. Monday: A red flag warning has been issued from noon to 9 p.m. for the North Platte area.

Tuesday is expected to bring near-record high temperatures to the region, the National Weather Service in North Platte said.&nbsp;

Tuesday forecasted high is 85 in North Platte, increasing to the upper-80s on Wednesday.

The spike in the mercury will be accompanied by strong south winds, which has led to a red flag warning being put into effect from noon to 9 a.m. Tuesday. South winds will be sustained at 15 to 25 mph, gusting up to 40 mph.

The next chance of precipitation in the long-term forecast is a chance of showers Thursday evening.

The North Platte Police Department participated in the “U Text U Pay"&nbsp; high-visibility traffic enforcement Mobilization from April 3 to 9.&nbsp;

Twelve officers worked over 100 hours of extra overtime focusing on traffic violations.&nbsp;

Thirty-two citations were written department wide, along with 79 warning tickets. 

Four arrests were made on outstanding warrants, one of which was a fugitive from Minnesota.&nbsp; Two arrests were made for driving under suspension. Four arrests were made for felony drug possession. Six grams of suspected methamphetamine along with prescription controlled substances were seized.

Districted driving campaign results in several arrests

NORTH PLATTE — Nebraska State Troopers, with assistance from
the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, have arrested one person after a pursuit on Interstate 80 in
Dawson County.


At approximately 7:10 a.m. Monday, a trooper observed an eastbound Chrysler Pacifica
speeding at over 100 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near Lexington. The trooper attempted a
traffic stop, but the driver fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit.


The Chrysler exited I-80 at the Lexington interchange, turned around, and began fleeing
westbound on I-80. The van maintained speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour during the
pursuit. Near the Gothenburg interchange, a Dawson County Sheriff’s Deputy successfully
deployed a spike strip to slow the vehicle. The van then came to a stop in the driving lane of I-80
at mile marker 214. The driver was taken into custody without incident.


Troopers located 85 pounds of marijuana, 4 pounds of marijuana products, and a small amount
of psilocybin mushroom products in the van. The driver, Antoine Geter, 30, of Baltimore,
Maryland, was arrested for willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, possession of
marijuana – more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled
substance, and traffic violations. Geter was lodged in Dawson County jail.

At 9:25 a.m. Sunday, the Lincoln County 911 Center received a call from Union Pacific Railroad reporting they had found a deceased female on a locomotive. 

The locomotive was inside Bailey Yards but had recently been towed in for repairs from Cheyenne, Wyo. 

 Deputies and Investigators from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.  Investigators discovered the female wedged in a small generator room located just behind the cab of the locomotive.  It appeared the female had recently passed away and she had no identification. 

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death and help identify the female.   Investigators are working with the Cheyenne Police Department on this case.

  Anyone with knowledge of a missing female from Lincoln County or Cheyenne area is asked to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at (308) 535-9599. 

This is an ongoing death investigation, and additional updates will follow.

Sheriff: Unidentified woman found dead on train in North Platte

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Federal regulators said Friday that railroads need to re-examine how they assemble their trains after a string of derailments in recent years that were at least partly caused by the way empty and loaded cars were mixed together with locomotives.

Heavy cars at the back of a train can push and pull against empty cars in the middle of a train as it goes over hills and around corners. Those forces have become more of a problem as the industry increasingly relies on longer trains with a wide variety of freight aboard.

Another factor complicating the issue is the industry's practice of placing locomotives throughout trains. The locomotives can amplify the forces if they're not used correctly.

The Federal Railroad Administration's advisory cites six derailments since 2021 where those forces were a factor. They include a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norfolk-southern-springfield-train-derailment-1b08c84e0788082dd24a4f4ca447f459">Norfolk Southern derailment</a>&nbsp;near Springfield, Ohio, last month and a 2021 Union Pacific derailment that forced the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-evacuations-d47aa1754a78a22cbccb552ea9348228">evacuation of Sibley, Iowa,</a>&nbsp;for three days. Regulators say these kind of derailments are happening with increasing frequency.

But regulators didn't mention the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-ohio-evacuations-fires-5d399dc745f51ef746e22828083d8591">fiery February derailment</a>&nbsp;near East Palestine, Ohio, that prompted much of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">recent concern nationwide</a>&nbsp;about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/palestinian-territories-ohio-canada-business-accidents-d57651e17b2f9e0163c50298106950a3">railroad safety</a>&nbsp;as an example of this problem. The National Transportation Safety Board has said that an overheated bearing that caused an axle to fail on one of the railcars likely caused that derailment.

But it is still early in the East Palestine investigation so it's not clear if the makeup of the train was also a factor.

“Railroads must prioritize proper train makeup to maintain safety, prevent accidents, and optimize train performance," the railroad administration said in the advisory. A spokeswoman for the Association of American Railroads trade group said the major freight railroads already use sophisticated computer software to help them build trains and properly distribute the weight. Not only is it important to consider where to put the loaded cars, but railroads also have to factor in that some goods are heavier than others and that the weight of the liquid inside a tank car will shift as the train moves. AAR spokeswoman Jessica Kahanek said the railroads will consider regulators’ recommendations.

“The industry is committed to productive conversations about how we continue to advance our shared goal of ensuring the safety of the trains that serve customers and communities across the nation,” Kahanek said.

A spokeswoman for Union Pacific, which handled three of the trains highlighted in the advisory, said the railroad is using high-tech tools to monitor train forces and makes adjustments as needed. Kristen South said UP has seen derailments decline along its network last year and this year, even as maximum train length reached 9,329 feet (2.8 kilometers).

“We constantly evaluate our processes and continue to work with government agencies and industry partners to further improve safety,” South said.

Norfolk Southern officials declined to comment on the advisory. That railroad was responsible for two of the derailments in the advisory, as well as the one in East Palestine.

(AP) — Federal regulators said Friday that railroads need to re-examine how they assemble their trains after a string of derailments in recent years that were at least partly caused by the way empty and loaded cars were mixed together with locomotives.Heavy cars at the back of a train can push and pull against empty cars in the middle of a train as it goes over hills and around corners. Those forces have become more of a problem as the industry increasingly relies on longer trains with a wide variety of freight aboard.Another factor complicating the issue is the industry's practice of placing locomotives throughout trains. Prescribed burns are taking place this spring on some Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife management areas, state parks and state recreation areas where weather conditions allow.

Burning allows habitat managers to positively impact more acres. Burns will be conducted this spring, and those not completed will be attempted this summer or fall as weather conditions allow.

Burned acres often become more attractive to wildlife species, and for some species, the effect is immediate. The long-term effects on wildlife habitat are much better if prescribed burning is used as a management tool than if habitat is not burned.

Historically, wildlife habitats were shaped by wildfires that occurred throughout the year. Burns help set back undesirable plants that invade native woodlands and prairies, as well as other grass and wooded areas. Eastern red cedar trees, honey locust, buckbrush, sumac, dogwood and other undesirable deciduous trees and shrubs can be managed with the help of burns.

Used in conjunction with grazing, prescribed burning also can set back smooth brome and Kentucky bluegrass, increase diversity in grasslands and improve habitat for wildlife.

The North Plate Police Department has received multiple calls from residents regarding a scam circulating in the area, according to a news release. 

 Residfents reported receiving phone calls from an unknown subject identifying themselves as Chief Steve Reeves or his designee, with the North Platte Police Department.  Scammers advise residents they recently missed a court date and a warrant had been issued for their arrest.  The scammers try and convince the citizen that the arrest warrant can be cancelled, if they pay thousands of dollars, which they request to be wired to a specific location.  The scammers have been using different phone numbers to make these calls, but on at least one occasion, the department’s non-emergency phone number, 308-535-6789, was used.

These calls are not legitimate and the police department would never solicit money over the phone to pay a fine or cancel a warrant.&nbsp;

A record number of high school students will earn associate degrees from Mid-Plains Community College this year before they receive high school diplomas.

Ten students managed the accomplishment - more than half of them from North Platte High School - by successfully completing enough qualifying classes through MPCC.

The students and their high schools are as follows:

“These graduates are great examples of high school students utilizing the expanded early entry offerings at Mid-Plains Community College to earn associate degrees,” said Kayla Thurman, director of Early Entry and Program Development at MPCC. “Early entry is more accessible to area students than ever before. McCreery will become the first student to earn an associate degree from MPCC as a junior in high school. She will graduate with an Associate of Science.

“I don’t think that it has necessarily hit me that I will be graduating as a junior,” McCreery said. “I have been planning out my senior year, and since that is when most people take their college classes, I will have to find other things to fill the time. So, that is the most I have really thought about it, but I am excited for it to come to a close.”

McCreery began taking classes through MPCC in the summer of 2021. The majority were online to accommodate her high school schedule, but during the summers, she would take about four classes in person, on campus.

“I decided to take classes through MPCC because I remember looking at the newspaper at my grandparents’ house when I was about 10 or 11 and seeing two students who were graduating from college before they finished their senior year,” said McCreery. “I remember thinking that I wanted to do that and be like them, so, I put my mind to it, and I got it accomplished.”

The only dual credit classes she enrolled in, meaning they counted for high school and college credit at the same time, were English. The rest she took as a separate courseload from her high school schedule.

“I enjoyed the challenge,” McCreery said of her experience taking college courses. “I also enjoyed being ahead of the curve in some of my classes. I think the biggest challenge for me was finding a school-life balance. I was so focused on schoolwork that sometimes I would forget about promises I had made. It was definitely difficult, but also worth it.”

Not only did her efforts put her ahead of her peers in terms of academics, but it will also save her money in the long run. That’s a huge benefit considering she plans to be in school for a while.

“Since I will have all of my generals done, I will be able to graduate with a [bachelor’s degree] two years early, which will be nice for my plans,” McCreery said. “I want to become a doctor, and this will give me a bit of a boost so I can hopefully go into the workforce faster.”

Brott will become the first student to receive three associate degrees from MPCC while still in high school.

He will earn Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of General Studies degrees from Mid-Plains during the college’s commencement ceremony May 12, and the next day, will walk in his high school graduation.

“I decided to take early entry courses to get ahead on college and because I like learning,” said Brott. “I hoped I could learn more by taking things like Critical Thinking instead of a gym class.”

Brott started taking classes through MPCC via dual credit in the fall of 2020.&nbsp;

“Most of my classes were dual credit but four of them were offered separately through the college,” said Brott. “Of those, three were online, and one was in-person over the summer.”

It didn’t take him long to realize that college was a whole new world.

“The biggest challenge was probably the difference between how college and high school environments work,” Brott said. “College has a more formal and mature atmosphere, and early entry courses are a commitment that takes away some of the ‘fun’ classes in high school and replaces them with more serious classes. I do think it was helpful for me.”

Vendors sought for 2023 North Platte Canteen Festival

People planning to launch boats in Nebraska this spring should beware of low-water conditions across the state.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission advises boaters to be patient and cautious when launching and loading a boat.

“We are hoping not to have to close ramps,” said Zach Horstman, Game and Parks’ boating access coordinator. “While many of our ramps have been designed or extended to counter these low water conditions, the recent drought conditions still warrant users to be cautious while launching and loading.”

Horstman recommends boat operators have a spotter with them or check to see if the end of the ramp is visible from the shoreline or dock before launching, if water clarity allows.

He added that local staff are a great resource to get the most current ramp conditions as water levels and ramp conditions vary from one lake to the next.

When a lake’s water level falls, less of the boat ramp is underwater, reducing the length of the ramp for a successful launch, which can cause problems launching and loading a boat.

Once on the water, boat operators should be mindful of the increased possibility of underwater hazards during low-water conditions.

Lincoln County Commission will meet Monday morning

On Friday, April 7 at 7:55 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a reported tractor trailer hauling hay colliding with BNSF locomotive.&nbsp;

The collision happened at&nbsp;County Road 9 and BNSF&nbsp;Rail Crossing 089185H approximately 1/2 mile south of Hwy 26. &nbsp;The crossing includes a Rail Road Crossing sign indicating two tracks. &nbsp;There are&nbsp;no automated arms nor alarms. &nbsp;Both tracks had locomotives&nbsp;on them. &nbsp;The south track had an east bound locomotive,&nbsp;and the north track had a&nbsp;west bound locomotive.&nbsp; Deputies determined that west bound locomotive&nbsp;struck&nbsp;a north bound tractor/trailer driven by Johnny Hill, age 69, of rural Morrill man. 

&nbsp;Hill was transported to Regional West Medical Center by the Morrill Fire Department for non-life threatening&nbsp;injuries and later released.

In addition to the Sheriff’s&nbsp; Office and Morrill Fire Department, responding agencies also included the Nebraska State Patrol and Valley Ambulance

Area schools and businesses can now pursue bus driver training through Mid-Plains Community College. MPCC will introduce a five-week School Bus and Passenger Endorsement class June 5-July 7.

Instruction will be provided in a combination of distance learning and in-person formats at MPCC campuses in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine.

MPCC’s Business and Community Education department implemented the training after hearing from multiple schools within the college’s 18-county service area that such a course was needed to address a shortage of bus drivers.

“All the local schools, especially rural schools, are in need of bus drivers,” said Josh Young, commercial driver’s license (CDL) coordinator for Mid-Plains. “But, finding the time for drivers to earn certification can be difficult because most have other jobs, too. That’s why we’re planning to go directly to the communities and to offer classes in the evenings after most people are off work. We’re trying to make it as easy and convenient as possible, so people don’t have to take time away from a job or travel a long distance for the training.”

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, any driver of a bus that is designed to transport 16 or more people is required to obtain a CDL in the applicable class with a passenger endorsement. That includes drivers transporting empty school buses on a public highway.

Those wanting to obtain a CDL must prove they have taken formal Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT), which became a federal requirement Feb. 7, 2022. ELDT is part of the class Mid-Plains is offering.

The classroom, distance learning portion of the class will focus on theory requirements outlined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association. That will be followed by pre-trip preparedness, backing exercises and road training during hands-on driving sessions.

“Upon successful completion of the class, drivers will test with our third-party tester,” said Jeff Smeltzer, Business and Community Education coordinator. “After passing that test, they will end up with a Class B CDL with a school bus and passenger endorsement.”

Classroom times are scheduled for 5:30-9:30 p.m. weekdays June 5-16. The remaining weeks will be spent driving.

Books will be provided, but drivers must have a commercial learner’s permit and a valid federal Department of Transportation medical card prior to beginning the course.

A condensed version of the class is also available for anyone who just needs the passenger endorsement.

donation has an extra impact because participating nonprofit
