Area schools and businesses can now pursue bus driver training through Mid-Plains Community College. MPCC will introduce a five-week School Bus and Passenger Endorsement class June 5-July 7.

Instruction will be provided in a combination of distance learning and in-person formats at MPCC campuses in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine.

MPCC’s Business and Community Education department implemented the training after hearing from multiple schools within the college’s 18-county service area that such a course was needed to address a shortage of bus drivers.

“All the local schools, especially rural schools, are in need of bus drivers,” said Josh Young, commercial driver’s license (CDL) coordinator for Mid-Plains. “But, finding the time for drivers to earn certification can be difficult because most have other jobs, too. That’s why we’re planning to go directly to the communities and to offer classes in the evenings after most people are off work. We’re trying to make it as easy and convenient as possible, so people don’t have to take time away from a job or travel a long distance for the training.”

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, any driver of a bus that is designed to transport 16 or more people is required to obtain a CDL in the applicable class with a passenger endorsement. That includes drivers transporting empty school buses on a public highway.

Those wanting to obtain a CDL must prove they have taken formal Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT), which became a federal requirement Feb. 7, 2022. ELDT is part of the class Mid-Plains is offering.

The classroom, distance learning portion of the class will focus on theory requirements outlined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association. That will be followed by pre-trip preparedness, backing exercises and road training during hands-on driving sessions.

“Upon successful completion of the class, drivers will test with our third-party tester,” said Jeff Smeltzer, Business and Community Education coordinator. “After passing that test, they will end up with a Class B CDL with a school bus and passenger endorsement.”

Classroom times are scheduled for 5:30-9:30 p.m. weekdays June 5-16. The remaining weeks will be spent driving.

Books will be provided, but drivers must have a commercial learner’s permit and a valid federal Department of Transportation medical card prior to beginning the course.

A condensed version of the class is also available for anyone who just needs the passenger endorsement.

Keith County's 2023 Big Give drive set for June 1 to 15

Spring turkey youth shotgun season opens April 8 and Hunter Nikolai, Nebraska hunter education coordinator with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, reminds hunters to always practice the four basic rules of firearm safety.

Nebraska’s spring turkey archery season opened March 25, and the spring shotgun season opens April 15. All spring turkey seasons close at sunset on May 31.

“Turkey hunting brings excitement and anticipation for many, but never let your emotions get in the way of a safe hunt this spring,” Nikolai said.

A red flag warning is in effect for several area counties from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service in North Platte warned.

With a combination of warmer temperatures, dry air and strong south winds, any fire could spread rapidly, the NWS said.

The high temperature through the weekend will be in the upper-60s to low-70s. Winds on Friday and Saturday will be sustained at 15 to 25 mph, gusting up to 35 mph.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain on Saturday night, the only precipitation in the long-range forecast.

By mid-week next week, the NWS is calling for the high temperatures to reach 80 degrees.

Ogallala student named North Platte CC HVAC/R  'Head of the Class'

After working in the news and multimedia sections at 
The Daily Nebraskan, sophomore journalism major Sophia Walsh will be 
stepping up to the position of editor-in-chief starting in July.

Walsh, a graduate of North Platte High School, has seen and worked with many members of The Daily Nebraskan since her 
freshman year and hopes to continue building on the foundation of past 
EICs while helping current and future employees develop their passion 
for journalism.

“I'm most excited to work 
with our future staff to continue creating engaging and important 
content as well as push ourselves outside our comfort zones to really 
develop our skills as journalists,” Walsh said over text. “I hope to 
create a stronger online/social media presence, have stronger, dynamic 
and in-depth multimedia content such as documentary style videos, 
on-the-scene reporting, and more podcast content.”

As
 a freshman, Walsh worked as a news reporter and photographer, before 
being promoted to assistant multimedia editor and stepping down from the
 news section. Current Editor-in-Chief and senior journalism major Becca
 Hummel said she is excited to see Walsh working in this position.

“I've
 actually worked with Sophia ever since she started about last year, my 
first semester, and it's been really exciting seeing her grow,” Hummel 
said. “I'm really proud of her and how much she's really stepped up this
 year.”

Walsh has minors in LGBTQ/Sexuality
 Studies and Racial Justice, Equity and Inclusion and works with 
University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Racial Justice Alliance which are 
helping her to improve and build upon the diversity initiatives at the 
DN.

“The
 biggest project we have been working on is creating a D&amp;I style 
guide that we can pair with our current DN and AP style guide that we 
will have finished and ready for next year's reporters and copy editors 
to use as a resource in their reporting and writing,” Walsh said over 
text. “We also have been working on strategies for recruitment and how 
we can be more engaged with diverse RSOs on campus as whole to ensure we
 are covering the stories that impact the entire campus community.”

Hummel is looking forward to helping Walsh meet her goals as editor-in-chief during the six-week training period.

“I
 know that we have a lot of external trust that we need to build up as a

 most rewarding part about being a part of the DN team is getting to 
work with such talented and driven people,” Walsh said over text. “It's 
always inspiring to hear about the stories and projects we are all 
working on for the DN as well as in our other professional development 
endeavors. I'm just really excited to see what amazing work we are all 
going to achieve in the year to come!”

The Daily Nebraskan, sophomore journalism major Sophia Walsh will be 
stepping up to the position of editor-in-chief starting in July.Walsh, a graduate of North Platte High School, has seen and worked with many members of The Daily Nebraskan since her 
freshman year and hopes to continue building on the foundation of past 
EICs while helping current and future employees develop their passion 
for journalism.“I'm most excited to work 
with our future staff to continue creating engaging and important 
content as well as push ourselves outside our comfort zones to really 
develop our skills as journalists,” Walsh said over text. “I hope to 
create a stronger online/social media presence, have stronger, dynamic 
and in-depth multimedia content such as documentary style videos, 
on-the-scene reporting, and more podcast content.”As
 a freshman, Walsh worked as a news reporter and photographer, before 
being promoted to assistant multimedia editor and stepping down from the
 news section. Current Editor-in-Chief and senior journalism major Becca
 Hummel said she is excited to see Walsh working in this position.“I've
 actually worked with Sophia ever since she started about last year, my 
first semester, and it's been really exciting seeing her grow,” Hummel 
said. “I'm really proud of her and how much she's really stepped up this
 year.”Walsh has minors in LGBTQ/Sexuality
 Studies and Racial Justice, Equity and Inclusion and works with 
University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Racial Justice Alliance which are 
helping her to improve and build upon the diversity initiatives at the 
DN.“The
 biggest project we have been working on is creating a D&amp;I style 
guide that we can pair with our current DN and AP style guide that we 
will have finished and ready for next year's reporters and copy editors 
to use as a resource in their reporting and writing,” Walsh said over 
text. “We also have been working on strategies for recruitment and how 
we can be more engaged with diverse RSOs on campus as whole to ensure we
 are covering the stories that impact the entire campus community.”Hummel is looking forward to helping Walsh meet her goals as editor-in-chief during the six-week training period.“I
 know that we have a lot of external trust that we need to build up as a
 newspaper. So I think that she has been doing a lot of good work on the

In order to leverage the systems-based efforts underway at Nebraska, 23&nbsp;beef industry experts, agri-business leaders, and producers have been named to an external advisory committee&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href="https://beefinnovation.unl.edu/" target="_blank">Nebraska Beef Innovation,</a>&nbsp;who will provide guidance to the university regarding key regional and broader&nbsp;opportunities and issues within the beef industry&nbsp;in Nebraska and beyond.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The University of Nebraska has made a commitment towards integrated beef systems and&nbsp;assembled an amazing team of teachers, researchers, extension personnel and it’s a&nbsp;unique opportunity to make a tremendous difference in how we look at beef

North Platte man named to Neb. beef advisory council

RABUN COUNTY, Georgia — New details are emerging about the wreck in Rabun County on Wednesday 
that claimed the life of a Nebraska man.&nbsp;The Georgia State Patrol has 
confirmed to Now Habersham that the couple’s infant daughter was in the 
car with her parents at the time of the crash.




According to Deanna Poss of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in 
Toccoa, Georgia, the child was “properly restrained in her car seat, uninjured.”




At 8:06 a.m. April 5, state troopers responded to the crash on GA 2 at Doutside of Clayton, Georgia.

According to the accident report, Jennifer Rzonca of North Platte was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound on GA 2 when the vehicle
 ran off the road in a curve. The crash killed her husband, 40-year-old 
Douglas Rzonca.




Family members say the Rzoncas were on their way to visit 
relatives and were less than an hour away from their destination when 
the accident occurred. They say Jennifer told them she fell asleep at 
the wheel; however, the Georgia State Patrol has not confirmed that. The
 agency’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is still 
investigating, said Poss.




Jennifer Rzonca sustained minor injuries in the wreck. EMS 
transported her to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton for 
treatment.




The state patrol’s preliminary accident report states the 
30-year-old Rzonca was “traveling too fast for the curve.” Troopers 
charged her with second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to exercise 
due care and failure to maintain lane.

Project is to support the creation of murals throughout Keith County to promote
the creative expression of the artist and to provide an enriching visual
experience for residents and visitors as a quality of place enhancement.

Barton Park. Many locals and travelers alike frequent Barton Park for picnics
and family events. The mural will be painted on an existing structure in the
park. . The key elements for the 2023 mural project will be ‘beauty, nature,
and creativity’ which are based on the First Impressions Mural Survey taken by
Brule residents. ‘Beauty, nature, and creativity’ were the top-rated values of
the survey respondents and will be used to guide the artist’s inspiration for
the project. This project stems from the “First Impressions” priorities
identified during the 2020 Keith County Community Vision Planning process. It
is being pursued thanks to generous funding raised during the 2022 Keith County
Big Give and a grant from the Keith County Foundation Fund.

This is Keith County Area Development’s second mural

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Agriculture added to the celebration
of National Ag Week in March by announcing the winners of this year’s annual poster contest. NDA
received a record number of entries (more than 2,100) from students in grades 1-6 from around
the state all highlighting agriculture, Nebraska’s No. 1 industry.


“The students who participated in this year’s contest really understand how important agriculture
is to Nebraska and had fun ways of showing how to celebrate our number one industry,” said
NDA Director Sherry Vinton. “NDA teammates look forward to this poster contest every year
and are amazed at how many talented, young artists we have in Nebraska. All the posters we
received are winners in our eyes, and I’d like to thank everyone for participating.”


NDA announces the winners of its annual poster contest during National Ag Week to highlight
the diversity of agriculture and to celebrate the food, feed and fuel that farmers, ranchers and ag
industry workers provide every day. The winning posters and the names of the schools
submitting entries are on NDA’s website at nda.nebraska.gov/kids.


The posters, depicting this year’s theme of “Celebrating Nebraska Agriculture,” were judged in
three separate categories: first and second grade; third and fourth grade; and fifth and sixth grade.
The poster contest is in its 20th year.


In the First and Second Grade Division:

• 2nd place: Isabel Larson, 2nd grade, St. Francis School in Humphrey

North Platte student takes first in ag department poster contest

LINCOLN — Leaders from the 
Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of 
Nebraska-Lincoln and the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska&nbsp;will visit communities across Nebraska during a statewide listening tour in April and May.

The 
listening tour, which kicked off Monday, will present an 
opportunity for the public to share their thoughts and visions for the 
future of Nebraska, their communities, and the state’s agriculture 
industry with university leadership including Mike Boehm, NU vice 
president for agriculture and Harlan vice chancellor for the Institute 
of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The tour is being conducted in 
conjunction with IANR’s Celebration of Innovation, which marks the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of IANR, as well as the 150th&nbsp;anniversary of UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As we reflect on 
the first 50 years of UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural 
Resources, we also want to look toward the future,” said Boehm. 
“Nebraskans have a key role in framing IANR’s next chapter, and this 
listening tour is an important step in co-creating our shared future 
vision.”

Future of Nebraska, agriculture the focus of listening tour

Over the past two years, consumers everywhere have 
felt the consequences of stifled energy production and dependence on 
foreign energy sources. From day one of the Biden administration, the 
president’s misguided energy policies have caused skyrocketing energy 
prices. As fuel prices shot up more than 60 percent, families struggled 
to pay for essentials like gas and groceries. Sadly, this forced many to
 resort to increasing their levels of household debt or burning through 
their family savings. Americans everywhere have seen firsthand what 
happens when we fail to prioritize domestic energy production.&nbsp;

We have also seen what happens abroad when nations 
are at the mercy of energy imports from nefarious actors. Vladimir 
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine brought the problem of energy security front
 and center and highlighted the risk of dependence on foreign energy 
sources. Unfortunately, the Biden administration’s response offered 
little relief as the president’s approach to energy policy created an 
unprecedented number of obstacles to domestic solutions to the energy 
crisis.

I am a staunch supporter of the mission to unleash 
American energy independence, and this week I joined House Republicans 
to advance an actual solution to the problems we are seeing. If enacted,
 H.R. 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act, would boost domestic energy 
production and exports, cut the red tape restricting development of all 
industries, and reverse the anti-energy policies of the Biden 
administration.

H.R. 1 expresses disapproval for President Biden’s 
cancelation of the Keystone XL pipeline, which effectively prevented 
creation of an estimated 11,000 American jobs. The bill would also 
enforce transparency from the Biden administration on their plans for 
offshore oil and gas lease sales and stop the administration’s efforts 
to phase out gasoline and internal combustion engines. Restricting 
access to these fuels only raises the cost of energy and makes the 
United States more dependent on supply chains primarily controlled by 
China.

The federal government should not be in the business
 of picking winners and losers in energy. Whether biofuels, nuclear, or 
petroleum to name a few, our approach must embrace an all-of-the-above 
path forward in which the best solutions are allowed the freedom to 
enhance prosperity for the future.

Because I recognize the potential of biofuels to be a
 significant part of this path forward toward American energy 
independence, I recently introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation, 
the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act. This bill – which I lead 
along with Senator Deb Fischer – would ensure nationwide, year-round 
sale of E-15 at the pump. Year-round E-15 has broad, bipartisan support 
in Congress and from key stakeholders. Moving forward with year-round 
E-15 would provide consumers affordable fuel options while boosting 
American energy independence. Consumers need year-round, nationwide 
E-15, and I’ll keep working to ensure biofuels are part of our 
all-of-the-above approach to energy production.

H.R. 1 is an important step toward American energy 
dominance. American energy production has the power to lower prices and 
strengthen our energy supply chains. Increasing production and 
untangling energy from burdensome regulations is key to providing 
certainty and lowering costs for American businesses, consumers, and 
families.

Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame

Andy&nbsp;Birkel, Lincoln Southeast (2004):&nbsp;Birkel&nbsp;was undefeated in the 100, 200 and 400 meters as a senior, winning the all-class gold medal in each. He also was a standout on Southeast’s state championship football team. He started his prep career at Lincoln East, where he set a school record with a 90-yard interception return. In college, he earned all-conference honors in football playing at Northern Colorado.

Nicole&nbsp;Brungardt, Norfolk Catholic (2008):&nbsp;She set Norfolk Catholic records in volleyball (kills) and basketball (points scored), and&nbsp;won seven Class B gold medals at the state track meet. In college, she started four years for the Wayne State volleyball team and was a two-time track All-American.

Ted Butler, Lincoln Southeast (1994):&nbsp;He won back-to-back state heavyweight wrestling championships as a junior and&nbsp;senior, andwas a standout center and defensive lineman in football. On the baseball diamond, he led the Knights in home runs and doubles. In college, he was a two-year starter at center for Boise State.

Matt&nbsp;Herian, Pierce (2002):&nbsp;A three-year all-state selection as a tight end,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;also earned all-state honors in basketball, scoring more than 1,000 points, and was a state qualifier in track. At Nebraska,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;became the Huskers’ all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards for a tight end.

Lukas&nbsp;Hulett, Bellevue East (2006):&nbsp;A track specialist,&nbsp;Hulett&nbsp;ran the fastest 400 in Nebraska high school history while winning the 200 and 400 at the state track meet.&nbsp;At&nbsp;Nebraska, he was a four-time All-American and earned 18 Big 12 meet medals.

Chris&nbsp;Kelsay, Auburn (1998):&nbsp;He earned all-state honors in football and&nbsp;basketball, and&nbsp;won state meet medals in the shot put for Auburn. He went on to earn All-American honors playing defensive end at&nbsp;Nebraska, and&nbsp;followed that with a 10-year NFL career after being drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Bills.

Sam Koch, Seward (2001):&nbsp;While he played multiple positions on Seward’s football team, it was his skills as a punter that made Koch stand out and carried him into his future. He was a two-year starter at Nebraska, setting a school record for average yards per punt. The first Husker punter drafted by the&nbsp;NFL,&nbsp;he spent 16 years with the Baltimore Ravens.

Dennis Korinek, Ulysses (1951):&nbsp;A six-man football phenom, Korinek still holds the state’s six-man career scoring record with 821 points, an effort that includes 118 rushing touchdowns. He led Ulysses to the six-man state championship with a win in the 1949 Apple Bowl. He won two events at the state track meet and tied the state record in the shot put before going on to the University of Nebraska, where he lettered three times in football and once in baseball.

Preston Love Jr., Omaha Tech (1960):&nbsp;All-state in football and basketball and a state champion in the high hurdles, Love was considered the best football player in the state his senior year. He attended Northwestern on a football and track scholarship, placing third in the Big 10 indoor hurdles, before transferring to Nebraska, where he lettered in football and track.

Luke Pinkelman, Cozad (2007):&nbsp;He set a state meet record in the shot put and won the all-class gold medal in the discus his senior year, capping a career in which he won three Class B shot put gold medals and two all-class discus golds. After a year at Iowa State, he returned&nbsp;to Nebraska, where he earned All-American honors in the shot put and discus.&nbsp;Also&nbsp;a football standout, he was a two-time all-state pick for the Haymakers.

Cami (Hubbs) Pruett, Omaha Westside (2007):&nbsp;Nebraska’s only undefeated four-time state tennis champion, she led Westside to three state titles while amassing a 117-0 singles record and a 22-0 doubles record. At Ohio State, she set freshman records for most wins in singles and&nbsp;doubles, and&nbsp;was twice voted the team’s most valuable player.

Stephanie (Streeks)&nbsp;Ruffridge, Gering (1993):&nbsp;Class A’s record-holder for blocks in a single volleyball match and blocks in a season,&nbsp;Streeks&nbsp;emerged as Gering’s premier three-sport star, earning all-state honors in basketball and winning the all-class gold medal in the high jump.&nbsp;Streeks&nbsp;played at Long Beach State, which won the NCAA volleyball title her redshirt season.

Tim Cannon, Omaha Bryan/Millard North:&nbsp;Back-to-back state titles at Millard North capped his 43-year career in&nbsp;boys&nbsp;basketball. His career record was 539-375, including 401-288 in 34 seasons at Bryan and 138-87 at Millard North.

Jerry Cover, Norfolk:&nbsp;In his 42 years as a golf coach, the last 37 at Norfolk, his teams were girls state champions three times, and he retired after his 2019 boys state championship team. The Panthers were state runners-up 11 times.

Dave&nbsp;Eppert, Lincoln East:&nbsp;A two-time national coach of the year in gymnastics, his Spartans were state champions five times in girls and four times in boys, with seven runner-up teams. East was ranked No. 1 nationally in&nbsp;boys&nbsp;gymnastics in 1988 and 1989.

Jean Janssen&nbsp;Groth, Wisner-Pilger (deceased):&nbsp;In only two of her 41 seasons did the Gators finish below .500 in volleyball. Her career record of 828-252 included 14 state tournament appearances, five trips to the state finals and the 1994 Class C-2 state championship.

Ron&nbsp;Mimick, Aquinas:&nbsp;The ninth coach to reach the 300-win milestone in football, he’s been at Aquinas since 1991. His football teams have won seven state titles and been in two other finals, and his boys track teams have won two titles and been runners-up twice.

John&nbsp;Farrand, Lincoln:&nbsp;Beyond his 41 years in coaching cross country, track and football in Classes A and B, the past president of the Nebraska Coaches Association has been a starter for cross country and track meets, a floor manager for state tournaments and has sat on the board of appeals for the state track meet.

James Ayres, Ogallala: He was involved in wrestling officiating for 49 years, starting with junior varsity matches and working state and district meets from 1976 to 2007, he continued as head supervisor and assistant supervisor of officials at the state tournament until 2019.

–Lincoln East’s undefeated 2022&nbsp;boys&nbsp;tennis team: The Spartans, with three freshmen, two sophomores and a senior, didn’t lose a match all season in any of the four divisions while winning the program’s 11thstate title. Hunter Nelson and Samarth&nbsp;Sajeesh&nbsp;played singles. Kirby Le and Caden&nbsp;Haar, and Joseph Bicknell and Kayden Le, were the doubles teams.

–South Sioux City&nbsp;girls&nbsp;basketball, 1995-2005: The Cardinals, coached by Kelly Flynn, were Class B state champions 10 of the 11 seasons and runner-up the other year.

–Rachel&nbsp;Balkovec, Omaha: The first woman to be a full-time manager of a minor-league baseball team has returned for her second season with the Class A Tampa Tarpons in the New York Yankees organization. The Omaha&nbsp;Skutt&nbsp;and New Mexico graduate has been in pro baseball for 12 seasons.

RABUN COUNTY, Georgia —&nbsp;The Georgia State Patrol has arrested a Nebraska woman on suspicion of second-degree vehicular homicide following a wreck in Rabun County, Georgia.




The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, on GA 2.&nbsp;

According to the state patrol, Jennifer Rzonca of North Platte was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound on GA 2 when the vehicle
 ran off the road in a curve. The crash killed a passenger in the 
vehicle, identified as 40-year-old Douglas Rzonca, also of North Platte.

Jennifer Rzonca sustained minor injuries. EMS transported her to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton for treatment.




A trooper with GSP Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the crash and 
says the 30-year-old Rzonca was “traveling too fast for the curve.” In 
addition to vehicular homicide, the trooper arrested her on suspicion of not 
exercising due care and failure to maintain lane.

One from North Platte dead, one arrested after accident in Georgia

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced Wednesday that Jason Charles Fink, 43, of Omaha was sentenced today in federal court in Omaha for transmitting an interstate communication containing a threat. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter Jr. sentenced Fink to 12 months and 1 day of imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, Fink will begin a three-year term of supervised release.

On May 26, 2021, Fink, using his cellphone in Omaha left a voicemail with Community State Bank at their Ankeny, Iowa, branch.&nbsp; In the voicemail Fink threatened to harm Community State Bank employees.&nbsp; Fink’s voicemail was eventually received by employees of Community State Bank who reported the voicemail to law enforcement.&nbsp;

This case is part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Initiated by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019, Project Guardian draws upon the Department’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence; enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes; improves information-sharing by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives when a prohibited individual attempts to purchase a firearm and is denied by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), to include taking appropriate actions when a prospective purchaser is denied by the NICS for mental health reasons; and ensures that federal resources are directed at the criminals posing the greatest threat to our communities.

Neb. man sentenced for threatening bank employees

GRAND ISLAND—
 Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Colorado minor 
and located two missing juveniles during a traffic stop on Interstate 80
 near York.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, a trooper observed a Chevrolet Colorado pickup driving with a headlight out on eastbound
 I-80 at mile marker 347. The trooper performed a traffic stop.

During
 the traffic stop, the trooper discovered that the license plates on the
 vehicle belonged to a different vehicle and
 that the pickup had been reported stolen from Colorado. The driver was 
taken into custody. Troopers located two juveniles in the pickup as 
well. The 17-year-old male and 12-year-old female had both been reported
 missing from Colorado. Troopers discovered that
 the driver was in violation of a protection order against one of the 
passengers.&nbsp;


The
 driver, an 18-year-old male, was taken into custody for theft by 
unlawful taking $5,000+, kidnapping, violating a protection
 order, possession of an open alcohol container, possession of drug 
paraphernalia, obstructing a peace officer, and other charges. He was 
lodged in York County jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Missing Colorado juveniles located in I-80 traffic stop

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte City Council met in regular session Tuesday night. Rich Rasta and Briar Berger were reappointed to the North Platte Library board. The council also approved hiring Marvin Planning Consultants to help with a comprehensive plan and a new housing plan. Councilman Ty Lucas talked about keeping North Platte’s housing plan current.&nbsp;

“Our comprehensive plan is over 10 years old. And our last housing study was in 2018. And what's interesting is, if a developer comes to our community who's interested in working here who isn't local and doesn't have the&nbsp;familiarity that the local developers do, the first thing they ask you for is the housing study and the comprehensive plan," he said. "It's also important to have some common direction as a community locally. When it comes to any federal or state grant money, those plans are extremely important.” 

Lucas added that Judy Clark, director of the housing authority, had actually had trouble&nbsp;finding firms who would do the study.&nbsp;

“There's so much work going on in the state that the last time we did a housing plan, maybe we had 11 proposals, and I think this time we had maybe less than three so you can tell there's a lot going on in state.”&nbsp;

The council also held a public hearing last night about awarding TIF money to Wilkinson Development to develop and build a new Fat Dogs Truck Stop and office buildings at the Interstate 80 179 exit adjacent to Newberry access on the north side of the interstate, according to North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. 

“Well, I'm just excited that we have a local developer that's going to develop not only a Truck-Stop but also potentially another hotel and also continue to establish their regional operation," Kelliher said. "Their (Wilkinson Development) headquarters is right here in North Platte. They’re&nbsp;planning to build another building out there to run their headquarters out of and that's all jobs in our community. Those are local people who spend their money here — they buy houses, they buy their groceries, they spend all that money here, right here in North Platte. 

"It's not a truck stop that sends most of its money off to some other community. And don't get me wrong. We appreciate every truck stop we have. They&nbsp;provide jobs and provide services. But anytime you can promote your local companies growing and bettering themselves it makes your town a better place.”&nbsp;

Councilman Lucas said he didn’t think this area would ever be developed, if it wasn’t for a project like this. 

“I didn't know if I would ever see that quadrant developed in my lifetime. And I'm pretty excited about that," he said. "It took tremendous foresight by the chamber and development corporation because when they were working on a proposed site for what later became known as Sustainable Beef, they had the foresight to include this area in the blight substandard study to get it designated to be TIF-eligible. When that was accomplished and we talked about that a lot at the time at the council recognizing that this creates an opportunity for this quarter to be developed. I will never be convinced that that area would ever have been developed without tremendous assistance. I frankly can't be more excited that, first it's a local company headquartered here; and second, I think their ask was conservative and reasonable for the assistance they need to pull it off.”&nbsp;

The next step for the project will be a return to the Community Redevelopment Authority for finalization of the plan, and a contract that would need to be signed. Wilkinson Development would be free at that time to collect bonds and break ground which they hope to do by the end of the year.&nbsp;

After a cold and blustery Wednesday, the National Weather Service in North Platte is forecasting a return to spring as the weekend approaches.

With north winds blowing 15 to 20 mph throughout Wednesday, the high is only expected to reach the low-40s.

By Thursday, the mercury will begin to tick back up, with a high in the low- to mid-50s, rising to the upper-60s by Friday.

Saturday and Sunday, skies will be sunny and the thermometer will reach the low- to mid-70s, the NWS said, rising to around 80 on Monday and Tuesday.

There is no precipitation in the long-range forecast.
