GRAND ISLAND&nbsp; — Fourteen troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have been cross-trained by the Nebraska Forest Service as part of the Nebraska Wildland Fire Academy. These troopers are drone pilots stationed throughout the state, many of whom responded to assist at wildfires in 2022.&nbsp;

“As our NSP drone program grew last year, it became a valuable public safety resource at many wildfire responses across the state,” said Captain Jason Scott, Commander of NSP Special Operations. “Adding basic wildland firefighter training for our drone operators adds an important level of safety to their operation. We want to thank the Nebraska Forest Service for providing the training and additional knowledge to our troopers.”

These 14 troopers received Red Card Wildland Fire Training earlier this month. The Nebraska Forest Service offers several levels of training for wildfire response. More information can be found at the&nbsp;<a href="https://nfs.unl.edu/NWFA">Nebraska Forest Service website.</a>

“The Nebraska State Patrol provides a much-needed resource for wildfire suppression in Nebraska,” said State Forester John Erixson. “The information collected by the drones is invaluable for understanding what is happening with the wildfires. Having State Troopers trained in basic wildland firefighting will help keep everyone safe. Folks taught in these classes learn critical skills, including wildfire behavior, firefighting techniques, and how to be safe in a high-risk environment.”

In 2022, NSP troopers flew drone missions in response to wildfires in many parts of Nebraska. In total, troopers flew missions at ten wildfires, often with multiple drone pilots working on different areas of the fire. The drones were able to provide a real-time view of fire activity for firefighters battling the blaze on the ground. NSP also coordinated with the Nebraska National Guard in multiple responses, using drones to pinpoint hotspots which were then doused with a water drop from an aircraft.

As the spring and summer months arrive, NSP and the Nebraska Forest Service remind all Nebraskans to be cognizant of fire danger and the potential for wildfires in dry conditions.&nbsp;

The City of North Platte reminded residents and Nebraska sales tax permit holder that, effective Saturday, local sales and use tax in the city of North Platte will be 2 percent.&nbsp;


 The Nebraska state sales and use tax rate is 5.5 percent resulting in a total

Steven Russell announced that Kendra R. Baker, 37, of Grand Island was sentenced last week in federal
court in Lincoln.&nbsp; Senior United States 
District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Baker to 54 months in prison 
for distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine mixture and 5 
grams or more of methamphetamine actual.&nbsp; After
 serving her sentence, Baker will serve a 3-year term of supervised 
release.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp;


In
 March and April of 2021, drug investigators used a confidential 
informant to arrange the controlled purchase of methamphetamine from 
Baker.&nbsp; Four methamphetamine purchases were
 conducted during that time period at various locations in Grand Island 
and Hastings.&nbsp; The quantities purchased during those buys ranged from a 
half ounce to two ounces of methamphetamine.&nbsp; Baker sold in total over 
125 grams of lab-confirmed methamphetamine.&nbsp;
 Some of that methamphetamine was tested for purity and determined to 
contain at least 74 grams of actual methamphetamine.

This case was 
investigated by the Tri-City Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT). TRIDENT is
 a task force with law enforcement personnel from the Adams County 
Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Federal
 Bureau of Investigation, Grand Island Police Department, Hall County 
Sheriff’s Office, Hastings Police Department, Homeland Security 
Investigations, Kearney Police Department, and the Nebraska State 
Patrol.

Leadership Nebraska is beginning its 15th year. Its mission is to identify, educate, connect, inspire and engage Nebraska’s current and emerging leaders for the well-being of the state of Nebraska. The program focuses on leadership development and broadening understanding and engagement on issues and opportunities facing our state. Participants gain in-depth knowledge that helps them define challenges, develop solutions and achieve positions of higher responsibility. Class members are selected from different regions of the state, with different backgrounds and diverse talents. Applicants must have demonstrated community and professional leadership experiences, as well as an abiding interest in Nebraska and its future.

The nine-month program consists of six sessions, each of which lasts two and a half days. The sessions cover a broad range of key Nebraska issues – such as economic development, health care, education, agriculture, government and policy.

“Strong leaders are the heart of our communities and businesses,” said Bryan Slone, NE Chamber president. “We must equip our next generation of leaders with the experiences, information and connections they need to generate big ideas and make bold moves that push Nebraska forward.”

Leadership Nebraska’s next class will begin with an orientation retreat in June at Lied Lodge in Nebraska City. Other sessions will be held in August, September, October, November and January across the state. A commencement ceremony will be held in Lincoln in February 2024. 🎥 Leadership Nebraska accepting applications through May 1

KEARNEY, Neb. – As drug trends change and overdose incidents increase across the country, law enforcement partners continue working to counter the threat to Nebraska communities through enforcement and education. That ongoing partnership was on display for law enforcement agencies and county attorneys during this week’s second annual Nebraska Drug Forum, held in Kearney.

Last year, methamphetamine was the primary focus of the Nebraska Drug Forum. This year, attendees received additional training on a broad range of drug-related topics. More than 150 investigators, prosecutors, and representatives from law enforcement agencies attended the two-day forum.

“Illicit drugs are harming and killing Nebraskans in communities across our state. Having&nbsp;our local, state, and federal agencies&nbsp;work together and share resources is a critical part of the strategic response.&nbsp;This year’s forum—with record-setting attendance that brought together police departments, sheriffs, county attorneys, postal inspectors, the state patrol, the FBI, the United States Attorney’s Office, and the DEA—was an important step in our coordinated effort to keep Nebraskans safe,”&nbsp;stated Attorney General Mike Hilgers.

Recent DEA laboratory testing reveals that 6 out of 10 fentanyl-laced pills now contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. That is an increase over the rate of 4 out of 10 that tested positive for potentially lethal doses last year.

“Fentanyl and methamphetamine are the top two drug threats facing Nebraskans,” DEA Omaha Division Special Agent in Charge Justin C. Law enforcement partners host second annual Nebraska Drug Forum

After a projected high near 70 on Thursday in Lincoln County, the thermometer will nosedive to nearly 20 by Friday night, the National Weather Service in North Platte said.

There is a 20 percent chance of rain showers overnight Thursday, increasing to a 50 percent chance of a wintry mix through the day Friday.&nbsp;

The mercury will begin to rise over a sunny weekend, the NWS said, with high temperatures in the low- to mid-60s returning by Saturday.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;The Western Community College Area Board of Governors has approved the recommendation of three finalists for the position of president by the Presidential Search Advisory Committee at Western Nebraska Community College.

The three finalists, in alphabetical order are Dr. Samuel (Todd) Brand, chief academic officer at Ashland Community &amp; Technical College; Mr. Greg Dart, chief campus administrator at Utah State University Eastern; and Dr. George McNulty, president at Gogebic Community College.

The WCCA Board of Governors voted to approve the finalists at the March Board of Governors meeting.

Dr. Brand is the current chief academic officer at Ashland Community &amp; Technical College in Ashland, Kentucky. Prior to his position at Ashland, he was the arts/communications division chair from 2006-2019 at Meridian Community College in Mississippi, where he also served as the arts &amp; letters series director from 2014-2019.

Brand holds a Ph.D. from Mississippi State University, a Master of Science in Communications, and a Bachelor of Science from Mississippi College.

Mr. Dart has been the chief campus administrator at Utah State University Eastern in Price, Utah since 2018. Prior to that, he served as the vice chancellor of student affairs &amp; enrollment management from 2014-2018, and the director of enrollment services from 2012-2013. Dart has also held roles as the vice president for student services at Zane State college in Ohio; the director of admissions, scholarships, and communications, and associate professor of communications, both at Snow College in Utah.

Dart is finalizing his doctorate of education at Northeastern University, with all but his dissertation complete. He also has a Master of Education in Instructional Technology from Utah State University, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Public Communications from the University of Alaska-Anchorage, and an Associate of Science from Snow College.

Dr. McNulty has been the president of Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan since 2019. He previously served as the vice president of student affairs at Colby Community College in Kansas for six years, as well as the college's acting Title IX coordinator during the same time. He has held a variety of roles at higher education institutions including positions as an interim director of financial assistance, coordinator of retention/counselor, student-athlete advisor, Phi Theta Kappa co-advisor, and academic advisor, among others. He also served in the U.S. Army, active duty from 1988-1991.

McNulty holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and a Master of Arts in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from California State University, Chico, and two associate's degrees from Feather River College.

The Board will conduct in-person interviews and campus visits with the finalists in the first two weeks of April. Each candidate will have an open forum on the Scottsbluff Campus and meet and greets on the Alliance and Sidney campuses where they will have the opportunity to meet with WNCC students, employees, and community members. Upgrades to Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area near Ogallala in 2022 have improved boating access, traffic flow, fishing amenities, beach access and more.

A $3.5 million boating access project significantly upgraded Martin Bay’s entrance, parking area and high-water boat ramp, and the Cedar View Bay boat ramp.

The Martin Bay high-water boat ramp has an 11% grade, compared to 3.5% before the project. The steeper grade makes launching boats easier. The two-lane ramp has a turnaround and boat staging area. The addition of accessible parking and resurfacing were among many improvements to the existing lot. A restroom with flush toilets was added as well.

A Barracuda fish-cleaning station, valued at $55,000, also was installed with funding by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Sportfish Restoration Program. Martin Bay previously had no fish-cleaning station.

The Martin Bay entrance was upgraded to three lanes to improve traffic flow. This reduces the number of cars on or near the highway, improving safety. With two gatehouse booths, more guests can be helped simultaneously, to allow faster entry into the park. A roundabout also was installed to help with traffic flow.

The renovation of the Cedar View boat ramp has improved boat launching on the west end of the lake. Workers replaced some of the old ramp, which was cracked with erosion under the concrete. The ramp’s entrance was widened and the top section extended. A new exit lane leads back to the parking lot, which has a new vault toilet.

The final part of this project to be completed is the motorized water trail, scheduled for completion by summer. This is a marked route on navigable waters for recreational use. Improved boating access sites, once completed at opposite ends of the reservoir, will be the first element of this trail.

Another Cedar View upgrade was the addition of a Barracuda fish-cleaning station, replacing a 10-year-old unit. This improvement of nearly $55,000 was funded 50% by Nebraska Game and Parks and 50% by Keith County Visitors Committee improvement grant.

New beach access points were created at Beach Area No. 3 and Cedar View. The project included removal of trees, reshaping the landscape to have a steadily sloped roadway and the placement of rock.

In 2021, nearly all the beach access points had a new rock dressing, and in 2022 five beach access points where graded and new rock was added.

Last fall and this spring, Lake McConaughy’s archery range received new targets, target stands, a mulched walking trail, a rock parking area, signage, updated picnic area, and fencing to improve safety for users. Funding for the improvements came from the Game and Parks Hunter Education Program and Lake McConaughy budget. Assistance for the project came from Big Mac Sports Club and Big Mac Bowhunters.

The improvement projects were funded with a combination of the Nebraska Game and Parks’ Capital Maintenance Fund and park user fee revenue, in partnership with matching funds provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Sportfish Restoration Program and the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program, along with the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s State Recreation Road Fund.

A restroom with flush toilets was added as well.A Barracuda fish-cleaning station, valued at $55,000, also was installed with funding by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Sportfish Restoration Program. Martin Bay previously had no fish-cleaning station.The Martin Bay entrance was upgraded to three lanes to improve traffic flow. This reduces the number of cars on or near the highway, improving safety. With two gatehouse booths, more guests can be helped simultaneously, to allow faster entry into the park. A roundabout also was installed to help with traffic flow.The renovation of the Cedar View boat ramp has improved boat launching on the west end of the lake. Workers replaced some of the old ramp, which was cracked with erosion under the concrete. The ramp’s entrance was widened and the top section extended. A new exit lane leads back to the parking lot, which has a new vault toilet.The final part of this project to be completed is the motorized water trail, scheduled for completion by summer. This is a marked route on navigable waters for recreational use. Improved boating access sites, once completed at opposite ends of the reservoir, will be the first element of this trail.Another Cedar View upgrade was the addition of a Barracuda fish-cleaning station, replacing a 10-year-old unit. This improvement of nearly $55,000 was funded 50% by Nebraska Game and Parks and 50% by Keith County Visitors Committee improvement grant.New beach access points were created at Beach Area No. 3 and Cedar View. The project included removal of trees, reshaping the landscape to have a steadily sloped roadway and the placement of rock.In 2021, nearly all the beach access points had a new rock dressing, and in 2022 five beach access points where graded and new rock was added.Last fall and this spring, Lake McConaughy’s archery range received new targets, target stands, a mulched walking trail, a rock parking area, signage, updated picnic area, and fencing to improve safety for users. Funding for the improvements came from the Game and Parks Hunter Education Program and Lake McConaughy budget. Assistance for the project came from Big Mac Sports Club and Big Mac Bowhunters.The improvement projects were funded with a combination of the Nebraska Game and Parks’ Capital Maintenance Fund and park user fee revenue, in partnership with matching funds provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Sportfish Restoration Program and the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program, along with the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s State Recreation Road Fund.

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that 
Mark A. Barraza Saenz, 22, 
of Grand Island was sentenced last week in federal court in 
Lincoln for possessing with intent to distribute 50 grams or 
more of methamphetamine and possessing a firearm
 in furtherance of that drug trafficking crime. Senior United States 
District Judge
John M. Gerrard sentenced
Barraza Saenz
 to 72 months’ imprisonment on the drug charge and a consecutive 60 
months’ imprisonment on the firearm charge, for a total sentence of 132 
months.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.
 After his release from prison, he will begin a five-year term of 
supervised release.

On
 October 12, 2021, in the early morning hours, a Merrick County 
Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a silver sedan heading east bound in 
Central City, Nebraska.
 Based on driving infractions, the deputy initiated a traffic stop.&nbsp; Two
 males were in the sedan, including Barraza Saenz in the front passenger
 seat.&nbsp; Barraza Saenz admitted to smoking marijuana approximately an 
hour earlier and consented to the deputy searching
 him.&nbsp; While searching Barraza Saenz, the deputy found two bundles of 
methamphetamine.&nbsp; The deputy then searched the trunk of the sedan and 
found a bag containing methamphetamine. Under the bag was an American 
Tactical M1911 Military .45 caliber semi-automatic
 pistol with the magazine containing one bullet next to it.&nbsp; The 
methamphetamine from Barraza Saenz’s person and the vehicle was 
laboratory tested and confirmed to be approximately 209 grams of 
methamphetamine.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Merrick County Sheriff’s Office.

LINCOLN — Nebraska economic 
development officials on Monday announced $14 million in housing-related
 grants headed to various communities across the state that have been 
set back by the pandemic.

The state fell short, however, of 
awarding another nearly $4 million set aside for housing — because not 
enough qualified applicants from rural areas requested the money, a 
spokesperson said.

The spokesperson for the Department of Economic Development said the state will open a<a target="_blank" href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/recovery/pandemic-relief-housing-program/"> second application cycle</a> to try to distribute the remainder.

The funds are from the federal 
American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and were earmarked last year under 
Legislative Bill 1014 to respond to negative effects of COVID-19 by 
increasing housing stability.

In this wave of grants, the 
department was dealing with two funding pots: $10 million for one 
program and $8 million for another.

All of the $10 million was snapped up
 by rural cities. That amount was to go to eligible municipalities that 
develop and renovate affordable housing to increase long-term stability.

Of 27 applications totaling $19 million in requests, 12 winners are to receive the total $10 million via the state’s “<a target="_blank" href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/recovery/rural-workforce-housing-land-development-program/">Rural Workforce Housing</a> Land Development Program.”

Of the other $8 million fund, only 
about $4 million was distributed among five nonprofits. A state official
 said that at least half of the total is supposed to go to rural 
Nebraska and that an insufficient show of eligible applications left the
 money unclaimed, so far.

State Sen. Tom Briese of Albion, who 
has championed measures to devote more state funds toward affordable 
housing development, said the need across the state for additional 
housing “of all categories is indisputable.”

Numerous nonprofits and housing 
groups testified during various legislative hearings about the need for 
more housing, especially at affordable prices, to attract more workers 
and economic development to both urban and rural Nebraska.&nbsp;

“I am surprised more of these dollars
 were not accessed,” Briese said. “Perhaps there was an element of lack 
of awareness of the program parameters.”

Funds for that program were aimed at 
nonprofits serving low-income households, including refugee and 
immigrants, in disproportionately affected census tracts.

Five nonprofits that received chunks of the $8 million pot were:

Project: New construction of 16 units
 of three- and four-bedroom rowhouse-style rental housing units serving 
refugees and immigrants exclusively.&nbsp;

Project: Production of five 
affordable housing units for sale using a mix of rehabilitated homes and
 new construction units serving refugees and immigrants exclusively.

Project: Create quality, safe 
affordable housing through a home repair program serving refugee and 
immigrant homeowners exclusively.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Project: Down payment assistance program serving 12 refugee and immigrant households exclusively.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

stage. This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this 
glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and 
everlasting love. The original production starred the unparalleled 
Sutton Foster, who received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk 
nominations for her performance. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, 
Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy 
March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the 
publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her 
that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly 
taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and 
their experience growing up in Civil War America. Little Women 
embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled
 with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit. Little Women features
 plenty of great opportunities for female actors and singers ranging in 
age from teenage to 60 years old. The show also has a flexible cast size
 that can include as few as ten or as many as 42 people! The powerful
