"I've recently made the decision to stop down as head boys basketball coach at NPHS. It is the right time for a change in responsibility for me personally. Aside from family, my life has been basketball &amp; I'm so grateful for the opportunities, experiences, &amp; relationships this game has given me. A genuine &amp; heartfelt THANK YOU to all former players &amp; coaches I've competed with &amp; against the last 12 years. It's all been so rewarding &amp; meaningful to me. Go Dawgs!"

LINCOLN&nbsp;– The voting members of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts Board
 of Directors elected new officers during their board meeting March 6, 2023.

The
 NARD Board consists of representation from each of the Nebraska’s 23 
Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). The board meets five times 
throughout the year and helps guide the
 association and NRDs in decision making that protects lives, property 
and the future of Nebraska’s natural resources. The NARD Risk Pool Board
 governs the health insurance program for NRD employees.


Dr. Orval Gigstad, NARD President (Syracuse, Nebraska) 
The NARD Board and NARD Risk 
Pool Board elected Dr. Orval Gigstad from the Nemaha NRD as president. 
Gigstad has served on the Nemaha NRD Board since 1993 and the NARD Board
 since 1996. He also serves as chair of the
 National Association of Conservation Districts Northern Plains Region. 
Previously, Gigstad served as NARD president from 2002-2004. A 
practicing veterinarian for more than 45 years, he operates the Arbor 
Valley Animal Clinic in Syracuse. Gigstad and his wife
 Carolyn have two children, Grady and Amber, and grandchildren, Quincy 
and Amelia.

Marty Graff, NARD Vice President (Ainsworth, Nebraska) 
Marty Graff of the Middle 
Niobrara NRD was elected as vice president of the NARD Board and NARD 
Risk Pool Board. Graff has served on the Middle Niobrara NRD Board 28 
years and on the NARD boards since 2018. He farms
 with his wife, Brenda, and sons near Ainsworth. Off the farm, Graff 
serves on the East Woodlawn Cemetery Board (Johnstown, Nebraska) and is 
active in the Elks Club helping with youth baseball and wrestling.

Ryan Reuter, NARD Secretary-Treasurer (Minatare, Nebraska) 
Ryan Reuter of the North 
Platte NRD was elected secretary-treasurer of the NARD Board and NARD 
Risk Pool Board. Reuter, a sales manager with Betaseed and ACH Seeds, 
has served on the North Platte NRD and NARD boards
 since 2018. Reuter and his wife Amie have two daughters, Avery and 
Addison.

Jim Eschliman, NARD Past President (Ericson, Nebraska) 
Jim Eschliman from the Lower 
Loup NRD serves as past president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool 
Board. He served as president from 2020-2022 and has been on the boards 
since 2016. Eschliman has served on the Lower
 Loup NRD Board 17 years, is the current chairman, and has also served

Scotts Bluff Co. man named to state natural resources board

The North Platte Police Department is warning the public of the dangers of fentanyl after releasing the autopsy report of a man found dead in late January.

The body of Rico Katami, 20, was found the morning of Jan. 24 in the back yard of a residence in the 1900&nbsp;block of Burlington Blvd.

"The report indicated that Katami’s death was caused by multiple drug toxicity and was ruled to be accidental by medical examiners," police said in a news release Monday. "Recently, the North Platte Police Department has seen an increase in the seizure of fentanyl pills. While we are fervently working to take these substances off of the streets, we wanted to make the public aware of just how dangerous they are.

"Fentanyl is a highly potent drug with an increased risk of overdose. It takes roughly a pencil tip amount of fentanyl for an overdose to occur, or doses as small as 2 milligrams. We cannot stress enough that the risk of overdose and death that accompany this drug are extremely high due to its potency and urge all citizens to take caution when they come across unknown pills."

Police release cause of death of man found in North Platte, offer warning

LINCOLN&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a man for striking the NSP helicopter with a laser multiple times as it was in flight over the city of Lincoln. Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal offense and any laser strike constitutes an in-flight emergency.

At approximately 10 p.m. Friday, NSP pilots launched from the Lincoln Airport to assist the Lincoln Police Department with an operation. Shortly after launching, while flying west of downtown Lincoln, the pilots reported a laser strike on the helicopter. The pilots immediately reported the laser strike to Lincoln Air Traffic Control.

While searching for the origin location of the laser, the pilots reported additional laser strikes on the helicopter. The pilots were then able to identify the source of the laser, which was a subject walking on a path near Salt Creek, south of West O Street. The pilots directed troopers and LPD officers to the subject’s location.

Troopers located the subject just south of West O Street on the Salt Creek Levee Trail. The subject was found to be in possession of a laser pointer and was taken into custody without incident. 

After consultation with the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office, the subject, Lee Cimfel, 42, Lincoln, was lodged in Lancaster County Jail for second degree assault. NSP has reported the laser strike to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The daytime high Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be in the upper-50s to mid-60s. The wind will be 15 to 20 mph.

In the early morning hours Thursday, there is a 40 percent chance of rain and the overnight low will drop to the mid-20s. Snow is likely into Thursday afternoon, and the high will only reach the mid-30s, the NWS predicted.

North Platte, NE - This is the third segment of our 2023 "Meet The Rancher" series from the North Platte Post. We've traveled to Arthur county, Stapleton and in this episode Derek Beck sits down with Trey Wasserburger of TD Angus at Rishel Ranch south of North Platte. Trey and wife Dayna took over the operation at Rishel Ranch five years ago and this year will produce and sell close to 400 angus bulls at the upcoming bull sale on March 17th. 

The two talked about the changing cattle industry and how the beef processing plant "Sustainable Beef", which his family co-founded will impact the region in the coming years.

The Hot Sheets: March 13, 2023

Members of the North Platte Community College STEM Club traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual meeting March 2-5.

The members were Daniel Start, of North Platte; Camrin Coco, of Stapleton; Kaylee Guerrero, of Indianola; Taylor Battershaw, of Valentine; Juan Zanguitu, of 30 de Agosto, Argentina and NPCC math and physics instructor Jared Daily.

Each year, leading scientists, educators, policymakers and journalists gather to discuss cutting-edge developments in science, technology and policy at the AAAS Annual Meeting. This year’s conference featured groundbreaking multi-disciplinary research – specifically geared toward responding to the needs of humanity.&nbsp;

STEM Club members attended a variety of workshops and seminars and also spent time touring monuments, museums and other historical sites in the nation’s capital.

The STEM Club hosted star-gazing shows throughout the year to help offset the cost of the trip. Additional funding came from NPCC’s Student Senate organization.

North Platte CC STEM Club travels to Washington

Have your gardens and windbreaks struggled the last couple of years due to extreme weather events? Between fires, drought and no rain for long periods of time in western Nebraska, gardeners and producers are wondering how to keep windbreaks alive, and gardens producing. If you have questions, Nebraska Extension has a series of programs to help anyone learn how to cope with these extremes.

Join us for the “Gardening in Weather Extremes” and “Windbreaks for Livestock and Energy Savings” in Imperial and Grant coming up in April and May.&nbsp; Each program will be taught in a relaxed, roundtable format over coffee and conversation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in each location. David Lott, Horticulture Educator and Randy Saner, Livestock Educator from North Platte, will be teaching each of these programs with updates and recommendations for renovating and keeping gardens and windbreaks alive and productive now and in the future.&nbsp;

The general public is welcome and encouraged to also bring their questions. If someone has a question, other participants may have the same or similar question they would like answered. Here is list of the program’s dates and locations for each community.

• March 29 	Gardening Program, Chase County Extension, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mountain Time

Gardening, windbreak programs coming to Grant, Imperial

Keystone-Lemoyne, Ogallala, Regional West Ambulances, Game &amp; Parks, Keith County Sheriff, Nebraska State Patrol all responded to a 3-vehicle injury accident on Kingsley Dam at 1:35pm according to Chief Moul, Keystone Lemoyne Fire Department. KLFD and Ogallala had the one trapped victim extricated with&nbsp;hydraulics from one of the vehicles within 3 minutes of arrival. Victim packaged and transported to Ogallala Community Hospital. Later life flighted to Colorado with severe injuries. Two others were also transported to OCH. Removal and clean up completed by 4:30pm, Traffic was rerouted for 3 hours.

Accident on Kingsley Dam Saturday sends three to hospital, one life flighted to Colorado

At approximately 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a citizen who found a vehicle stuck on a minimum maintenance road north of 100th and Keystone Road. 

 Deputies were able to locate the vehicle, which was identified as the missing vehicle of the Aurora couple Robert and Loveda Proctor.  Two adults were located deceased in the area of the scene, and preliminary investigation has identified the persons as Robert and Loveda Proctor. 

 Foul play is not suspected.  Autopsies have been ordered by the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.   The investigation is ongoing, and includes the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Aurora Police Department and Kearney Police Department.

After 40 years as a doctor interacting with patients, in the last two and a half years the tables turned, and I’ve become the patient. Although most are good, I’ve found some doctors are detached, some are too quick, some would rather be somewhere else, some are even angry; but, when a physician who cares walks into the room, and I’m not exaggerating, the day becomes better, the pain becomes less, and hope fills my heart. Scientific knowledge is important, but the ability to convey honest concern, human thoughtfulness and compassion is equal in importance in this healing profession. So, how do we select pre-med students for that, or teach compassion in medical school?

There are studies that show those interested in humanities or taught disciplines that explore how people tick, do better in the compassion department. These disciplines include history, literature, religion, ethics, anthropology, psychology, cultural studies and the arts of theater, film, painting and poetry. Some explain that the humanities give us the very reason to learn science and mathematics.

Several studies support the value of humanities in medicine. Seven hundred medical students were surveyed about their lifetime exposure to the humanities and the results indicated that those who had more humanities knowledge had more empathy, tolerance to ambiguity, resourcefulness, emotional intelligence and less burnout. Another study found that a med student’s ability to recognize diagnostic clues increased by more than 35 percent after taking a visual arts class. Another study found practicing improv theater helped med students learn to prepare for unexpected questions and conversations. A fourth study showed how writing exercises helped med students have foresight into what a patient may be experiencing. Clearly, an exposure to the humanities makes a better doctor.

I believe that care providers who have had a well-rounded humanities education have a better chance of understanding about how it feels to face pain, nausea, loss of bodily functions or even a cancer diagnosis. Those steeped in good literature or art have a better opportunity to tap creative juices to problem solve and tolerate a life that can be ambiguous and unpredictable. Those who are knowledgeable of history, ethics, cultural ways will find it easier to know when it is time to stop aggressive care and move toward comfort.

This is a call for all students to become readers, to find time to enjoy the humanities, to exercise your caring and compassion muscles; so, when you come into the room of a person suffering, it makes their pain less and day better.

The Hot Sheets: March 12, 2023

Rockin’ the Choir will make a comeback at North Platte Community College April 1st.&nbsp;

It’s the second year for the event, during which, community members are invited to join NPCC students and employees in learning two songs that they will sing together in an open-to-the-public performance. No previous singing experience is necessary.

Participants will be accompanied by Kearney-based Blue Plate Special. The band plays songs from the 1940s to the 21st century.

“Rockin’ the Choir is such a fun musical experience,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “I love how it brings together music lovers of all types. Everyone involved is excited to bring back the event, and we have great new music to sing. All talent is welcome.”

The selections for this year are Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys.

Rehearsals to learn the lyrics and timing of the music will begin at 5 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Gym on the NPCC South Campus. The free performance will take place at approximately 6 p.m.

Rockin’ the Choir is being organized by NPCC’s chapter of the National Association for Music Education. NAfME supports music educators and advocates for equitable access to music education. The association encourages all people to be heard, seen and gain a feeling of belonging through music.&nbsp;

Free refreshments will be available at the event. NAfME also plans to sell T-shirts as a club fundraiser for $15 each.

Annual Light Up the Night 5K scheduled this month at Cody Park

Deadline to sign up for the Lincoln and Logan County 4-H Pig Lottery is
March 15, 2023.&nbsp; To be qualified for the 2023 Lincoln and Logan 
County Pig Lottery, youth must be currently enrolled in 4-H in Lincoln 
or Logan County and compete at county fair.

There will be a boarding option for the lottery pig
 for 4-H youth that do not have facilities to house the pig (e.g. lives 
in town).&nbsp; Please contact the Extension Office at
308-532-2683 if you are interested in this as space is limited 
and available at a first come first serve basis.&nbsp; Youth participating in
 the boarding will still be responsible for the daily care and expenses 
for the animal.

The lottery pig program was developed to help youth
 find pigs to show for fair and learn about caring for a market hog.&nbsp; To
 sign-up, a
$75 non-refundable deposit is required along with the name of the
 youth participating.&nbsp; The rest of the cost of the pigs will be due at 
the first meeting and weigh-in date on
Sunday April 2, 2023.&nbsp; The pigs will be officially owned and 
taken home by the exhibitor at this time.&nbsp; Total cost will vary 
depending on the market price of pigs (usually between $250 and $300).&nbsp; 
Exhibitors will be required to attend 2 of the 3 educational
 meetings.

LINCOLN — Each year, the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office invites fifth&nbsp;graders from across the state to participate in the&nbsp;Nebraska Missing Children’s Day&nbsp;poster contest. The posters are intended to raise awareness of missing children and remind parents, guardians, and caregivers to make the safety of their children a priority.

Molly Bracht&nbsp;from West Point is the 2023 first-place contest winner. The winning poster portrays a little girl in brightly colored clothes, sitting with her arms hugged around her legs with a dark cityscape contrasted behind her. 

Molly wrote, “She has her head down because she is stressed, sad, and anxious because she is not with her family.” In her essay, Molly said, “She is wearing bright clothes against a very dark city; because in the moment, she has to be bright and lift up her spirits so she can find her family.”

As the winner of the statewide contest, Molly’s poster will be submitted to a national competition with the U.S. Department of Justice. The national winner will be awarded at the annual ceremony in May recognizing&nbsp;National Missing Children’s&nbsp;Day.

 </figure>As the winner of the statewide contest, Molly’s poster will be submitted to a national competition with the U.S. Department of Justice.
