Cyclists Gear Up for the 43rd Annual Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska

Ogallala, Neb. - Jennifer Jones, a high school science teacher at Ogallala Public Schools is the&nbsp;recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mrs. Jones has been teaching for OPS for 13 years and teaches&nbsp;high school Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry-Dual Credit, Anatomy/Physiology, Physics, and Science Capstone to 10th-12th grade. She has been an educator for 15 years and taught for two years at Torrington High School in Torrington, Wy.&nbsp;

The President Award is the&nbsp;highest national recognition a K-12 math or science teacher can be awarded in the United States. In a social media created by OPS, OPS states " Mrs. Jones has gone above and beyond to inspire a love for learning, fostering critical thinking and curiosity in her students. Nichols will be joined earlier in the night on stage by country music newcomer Josh Ross. Since arriving on the scene as a teenager, Nichols has had a knack for finding and singing just the right song for the right moment. He did it with Number One hits “The Impossible,” “Gimmie That Girl” and “Brokenheartsville” (the latter of which he and Post Malone recently duetted live in Nashville), with the irreverent chart-topper “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” and with the back-to-back Number Ones “Sunny and 75” and “Yeah.” He does it with cover songs too: His mashup of Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive” and Alice in Chains’ “Rooster” is a fan favorite.

Applications now Available for Ogallala Public Schools Vacant Board Seat 

January 23, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people in southwest Nebraska as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Wednesday, investigators served a search warrant at a residence in rural Lamar, in Chase County. The NSP SWAT Team was activated as part of this operation. Both occupants had active warrants for their arrest.

As the SWAT Team made verbal contact with the occupants of the home, both voluntarily exited the residence and were taken into custody. The search of the residence revealed 16 grams of methamphetamine, eight ounces of marijuana, 12 firearms, and two stolen motorcycles.

The male occupant, Kenneth Johnston, 45, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for distribution of a controlled substance, and for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen vehicle, and conspiracy to commit theft. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail. 

The female occupant, Lindsey Bartorelli, 39, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for theft and lodged in Chase County Jail.

NSP investigators were assisted by troopers from several divisions of NSP, as well as the CODE Task Force, Imperial Police Department, and Chase County Sheriff’s Office.

Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska LEAD Program Class 42 recently returned from an impactful International Study/Travel Seminar to Romania, Hungary and Poland, held from January 3-17, 2025. The two-week journey provided 28 fellows with an immersive opportunity to explore the historical, cultural, religious and agricultural dimensions of these Eastern European nations.

“The International Study/Travel Seminar is a cornerstone of the Nebraska LEAD Program, offering Fellows an invaluable global perspective that enhances their leadership skills and understanding of agriculture in a global context,” said Kurtis Harms, Nebraska LEAD Program director. “This year’s visit to Romania, Hungary and Poland provided meaningful experiences and connections that will undoubtedly shape our Fellows as future leaders.”

The seminar featured a diverse itinerary, including visits to farms, businesses and historical sites. Highlights of the trip included:

“Visiting these countries opened my eyes to the shared challenges and opportunities we face in agriculture,” said LEAD 42 Fellow Jake Werner, a senior merchandiser with ADM. “Seeing how farms in Romania and Poland operate and hearing their stories inspired me to think differently about how we approach our agricultural systems back home. The visit also helped me appreciate the local and international markets we have in the United States.”

Fellow Michelle Bose, a farmer and closing agent with Dvoracek Title, added, “Walking through Auschwitz-Birkenau and Schindler’s Factory was an emotional experience that deepened my appreciation for the resilience of humanity and the importance of leadership grounded in empathy and understanding.”

The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to prepare agricultural leaders for tomorrow through its comprehensive leadership development curriculum. The International Study/Travel Seminar serves as a capstone experience, equipping participants with global perspectives that enrich Nebraska’s agricultural and rural communities.

“One of the most important factors in becoming a good leader is being able to get outside of your bubble or your comfort zone and experience life through the eyes others,” said Director Harms. “This enhanced understanding of people and cultures around the world hopefully lead to better decision-making and greater relationships with others.”

The Hot Sheets: January 23rd, 2025

Lexington, Neb, - A Lexington man has been arrested and charged with first degree homicide.

According to the Lexington Police Department (LPD), around 10:45pm on Tuesday evening, LPD officers were dispatched to the Cypress Lane area in Lexington for a verbal altercation.

Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the caller and observed a silver two door vehicle stalled in the front yard of the home.&nbsp; Preliminary investigation showed it was determined there was an adult male subject inside of the vehicle and that he was deceased. 

LPD states officers also observed numerous bullet holes in the windshield and front area of the vehicle. The Lexington Police Department Investigators were then called out to process the scene. Officers and Investigators located physical evidence at the scene as well as conducted follow up interviews with witnesses. 

A 33-year-old Lexington man identified as Aristh D. Rodriguez Linares was arrested and booked into the Dawson County Jail on suspicion of First-Degree Murder, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, and Discharging a Firearm into a Vehicle or Person.

The Lexington Police Department was assisted on scene by the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office and the South-Central Area Law Enforcement Services. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. The name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification. 

This is an on-going investigation and will be conducted by the Lexington Police Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The University of NE-Lincoln ALEC Department and the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.education.ne.gov/nce/nebraska-agricultural-educators-association/">Nebraska Agricultural Educators Association</a>&nbsp;recently hosted a 2-day professional development BriefCASE at Crete High School. This professional development was held in conjunction with the Nebraska FFA Alumni and Supporters Conference.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Participants traveled from across Nebraska and South Dakota to participate in this excellent opportunity for intense professional development. The institute provided experience in a full year of curriculum for Animal Health and Veterinary Science. This professional development opportunity was funded, in part, by the Nebraska FFA Foundation which Miss Aylward received a scholarship from to attend. The curriculum was written by CASE 4 Learning. CASE is an acronym for Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education and is an initiative of the National Council for Agricultural Education (The Council.)&nbsp;

CASE 4 Learning is committed to designing an inquiry-based agricultural curriculum that meets the current demands of teachers, students, and industry. CASE 4 Learning provides comprehensive professional development and workshops for new and seasoned teachers to achieve lifetime certification, learn new coursework, and build a community of support. Upon certification, all CASE 4 Learning teachers have access to course updates, training, and support for the remainder of their career. The curriculum is designed to spiral and scaffold course concepts, incorporate APP (Activity, Project, or Problem) modalities, and meet core standards to equip teachers and schools to help students become lifelong learners and prepare them for college or careers.

While at the BriefCASE Institute, Miss Aylward experienced every lesson in the curriculum and learned how to deliver lessons using inquiry-based learning, shifting focus from teacher-led to student-directed learning.&nbsp;

“The Animal Health and Veterinary Science BriefCASE Institute benefitted me by providing a strong curriculum, which fully engages her students in their learning.&nbsp; The CASE curriculum provides hands-on experiences for students which set them up for career ready practices,” states Miss Aylward.&nbsp;

Hershey FFA Advisor Attends CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) Conference

Wauneta, Neb. - Local first responder crews responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning around 4:00 am. The Wauneta Fire Chief stated on a social media post that no one was inside the structure and there were no injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Responding and assisting at the scene was Imperial Fire, Palisade Fire, and Wauneta EMS.&nbsp;

Crews respond to early Tuesday morning structure fire in Southwest Nebraska

North Platte, Neb. - On 01-22-25 at around 7:00 A.M. Officers from the North Platte Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of West 9th Street, on the report of a subject who threatened a family member with a flare gun and discharged the flare gun out of a window, setting a neighbor’s lawn on fire. The subject hid in a closet and refused to come out. 

While negotiations were being attempted, the subject once again discharged the flare gun into the street, officers were able to take the subject into custody. The adult male was taken to GPH and placed into Emergency Protective Custody.

Man Arrested in North Platte After Discharging a Flare Gun 

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;On 01-21-25, officers responded to 900 Autumn Park Drive on the report of a male inside an apartment who threatened himself and others with a firearm. The apartment containing the suspect was secured and residents from surrounding apartments were evacuated. Negotiations with the subject were attempted. 

Entry was gained into the apartment and the suspect was found deceased. Because the apartment had been secured by the North Platte Police Department, possibly prior to the subject’s death, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and will conduct the death investigation in order to meet the statutory obligations of the grand jury process.

Mentors play a crucial role in shaping the lives of young people by providing guidance, encouragement, and support. Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make positive choices, attend and engage in school, and reduce or avoid negative behaviors. By engaging in fun and enriching activities, youth have the opportunity to experience new adventures, build confidence, and deepen their relationships with mentors. Student members of the music club will sing to your loved ones on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday Feb. 12-14 between 12:00-2:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

The cost is $20 for community telegrams, or $5 for on campus telegrams. This is a fundraiser for the NPCC chapter of the National Association for Music Education.

The river antlerless season was shortened due to reduced deer numbers across much of the state. That season now aligns with the rest of the antlerless seasons, and all of them closed Jan. 15.

Final deer harvest results will be available late next month at&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/" target="_blank">OutdoorNebraska.gov</a>; search “wildlife surveys”.

Lincoln County Board of Commissioners 01-21 Agenda

Holbrook, Neb.- A man was found deceased in a ditch outside of Holbrook, according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the Furnas County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), around 1:15pm on Friday, FCSO were dispatched to a report of a man lying in a ditch northwest of Holbrook.&nbsp;

The FCSO states the caller reported to the 911 dispatch that the male subject was deceased. Law enforcement on scene searched the surrounding area and found the man had stranded his car in a stubble field, about one mile from the location he was found.&nbsp;

The initial investigation indicates no foul play was involved. An autopsy has been ordered. The identification of the man is being withheld pending notification of family, according to a FCSO press release.&nbsp;

Ainsworth, Neb. - Law enforcement, first responders were dispatched to the Grand Theatre in Ainsworth over the weekend for a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax.

According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), The BCSO, Rock Co Sheriff’s Office, Ainsworth Volunteer Firemen, and numerous NSP officers responded to a report of a bomb that was placed in the Ainsworth Grand Theater Saturday evening.&nbsp;

The BCSO states the incident was the result of a false swatting call.&nbsp;

The BCSO would like to thank the volunteers of the  Ainsworth Grand Theater for their quick action to call 911 with details of what the caller reported.  As well as thank all agencies who responded to the call.

Post news director Canon Rath chatted with Tuna from the Guardians of the Children (GOC) about the upcoming 11th annual "caller" chili/soup, rib/meat cook off and silent auction taken place this Saturday at the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte.&nbsp;

The event runs from 11:00am - 2:00pm and costs $5 at the door to get in. That $5 paid will let you taste all the chili/meats being served. The event is in honor of Ed "Caller" Clafin. The Lil' Guardians will be on location selling drinks and cinnamon rolls. Attendees will have the chance to vote on the best chili/soup, rib/meat and best decorated booth.&nbsp;&nbsp;
