On today's episode of Knight's Weekly, we sat down with the Head Coach of the North Platte Community College Men's Basketball team, Jacob Brandl, to discuss the team's first few games back from break and what they need to do going forward into conference play.

Two new members were sworn onto the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors Wednesday evening.

Molly Jeffres, of Ogallala, and&nbsp;Megan McGown, of Brady, both newly elected ran unopposed in the November General Election.

They join nine other members on the board including reelected members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug, Jr. and Kent Miller who are continuing in their service. Among other things, they will be responsible for leading the college through policy creation and initiation and through articulation and evaluation of the college’s scope, mission, values and legislated priorities.

Jeffres replaces Jo Etta Brown, of Ogallala, in representing District 2.

Jeffres is the Community Development Coordinator for Keith County Area Development.

In her role at KCAD she works to enhance economic opportunities and strengthen community connections throughout Keith County fostering growth and collaboration.

Jeffres is an Ogallala native and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, specializing in management.

With a passion for creative placemaking and sustainable development, she works to shape projects that celebrate the region's cultural and historical assets.

Her community work includes leading the Keith County First Impressions committee and the Western Trails Creative District committee.&nbsp; Jeffres is also co-host of the regional Community Catalyst program.&nbsp;

As a new board member Jeffres said, “I am most looking forward to contributing to the success and growth of Mid-Plains Community College by supporting its mission to provide accessible, high-quality education and opportunities for students.”

McGown takes over the District 5 seat for Ernie Mehl.

McGown serves as the Chief Development Officer for Great Plains Health.

There she oversees strategic planning, the Health Care Foundation, marketing/public relations, outreach and initiatives to enhance access at consumer entrance points.

In her role, she also leads business development and service line growth efforts, driving the hospital's commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the region.

McGown, a Nebraska Sandhills native, spent 15 years in community and economic development. Her efforts focused on business recruitment, retention and downtown redevelopment, reflecting her dedication to fostering economic growth and vitality in the region.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and a graduate degree in organizational management with an emphasis in economic development from Peru State College.

McGown serves as the chair of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Board of Directors and chairs the North Platte Community Recreation Foundation.

She is eager to contribute to advancing education and opportunity for the area.

“As someone deeply invested in the success of our communities, I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to support innovative education and workforce development opportunities that drive growth and create lasting impact for the region,” McGown said.

&nbsp; Just a 1/8th inch stream of water running will prevent the main water service from freezing.&nbsp; This will save costly repair bills and the inconvenience of being without water.&nbsp; We have a device available at our office you can install in your toilet tank that will keep the water running constantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Please check your foundation vents to ensure they are closed.&nbsp; Check for cracks or openings that would allow the wind to blow under or into your crawlspace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Community College will host a blood drive Jan.23. The event is open to the public.

The American Red Cross will be set up from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the concession area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Save time by making an appointment using the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification will be required at check-in. Walk-ins are welcome.

Morrill County - The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking public assistance in the shooting of a juvenile bald eagle that was located in Morrill County.

According to a social media post by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the juvenile bald eagle was found near County Road 81, approximately 1/4 mile south of Highway 26.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in the McCook Community College East Campus conference room, 905 E. 7th&nbsp;St., McCook, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Molly Jeffres, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Megan McGown, Kent Miller and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer. Board members Dr. Ben Lashley and Tyler Pribbeno were absent and excused.

NPCC student trustee EmiLee Walnofer and MCC student trustee Kendree Kern were also present.

a. Newly elected Board members Molly Jeffres and Megan McGown were sworn into office along with reelected Board members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Kent Miller and Ted Klug, Jr.

Food safety is in the news! Numerous food borne illnesses have occurred during the last few years. Most of the reported food borne illness outbreaks have occurred from food eaten away from home. ServSafe programs are developed by the National Restaurant Association to address the growing food safety concerns of consumers. In Nebraska, the program is being implemented in cooperation with the Agriculture and Health Departments, the Nebraska Restaurant Association and Nebraska Extension.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ServSafe Food Handler program is designed for kitchen employees including but not limited to cooks, dish machine operators, shipment receivers and employees who handle and prepare food in restaurants and other food service establishments. The training provides information on food safety; personal hygiene; using thermometers; preparation, cooking, serving, receiving and storing food safely; and cleaning and sanitizing.

ServSafe Manager Course is designed for restaurant owners and managers, food service handlers, dieticians and dietary managers. The training provides information on sanitation regulations and standards, training employees in sanitation, safe food handling, food microbiology, contamination, food borne illness and setting up a food safety system.

Food Safety Training Course Offered

North Platte, NE – January 15, 2025 – Community Connections’ Drug Take-Back events,&nbsp; formerly known as Prescription Drug Collections, resulted in the safe and proper disposal of 169&nbsp; pounds of medications, including 5.6 pounds of controlled substances. Within the last decade,&nbsp; Community Connections has removed 2,491.81 pounds of medication (including 91.56 pounds&nbsp; of controlled substances) from our community.&nbsp;

The Drug Take-Back events are essential to the community and play a key role in preventing&nbsp; pharmaceutical drugs from falling into the wrong hands or polluting our water systems. Safe and&nbsp; responsible disposal of unused or expired medications is vital to the health and safety of the&nbsp; Lincoln County community, helping to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and&nbsp; environmental contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These events were made possible through the ongoing partnerships with Region II Human&nbsp; Services, West Central District Health Department, Great Plains Health, Ready to Serve&nbsp; Volunteer Program (RSVP), Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful, Bomgaars, the&nbsp; North Platte Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Nebraska State&nbsp; Patrol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"By offering a safe, accessible way for community members to dispose of their medications, we&nbsp; continue to protect public health and safeguard our local environment,” said Erin Bone,&nbsp; Substance Abuse Prevention System Coordinator of Community Connections. “The ongoing&nbsp; support of our local partners is instrumental in ensuring these events reach as many people as&nbsp; possible.”&nbsp;

Lincoln County residents are encouraged to participate in future Drug Take-Back events to&nbsp; ensure the safe disposal of unused or expired medications.  </figure>Erin BoneNorth Platte, NE – January 15, 2025 – Community Connections’ Drug Take-Back events,&nbsp; formerly known as Prescription Drug Collections, resulted in the safe and proper disposal of 169&nbsp; pounds of medications, including 5.6 pounds of controlled substances. Within the last decade,&nbsp; Community Connections has removed 2,491.81 pounds of medication (including 91.56 pounds&nbsp; of controlled substances) from our community.&nbsp;The Drug Take-Back events are essential to the community and play a key role in preventing&nbsp; pharmaceutical drugs from falling into the wrong hands or polluting our water systems. Safe and&nbsp; responsible disposal of unused or expired medications is vital to the health and safety of the&nbsp; Lincoln County community, helping to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and&nbsp; environmental contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;These events were made possible through the ongoing partnerships with Region II Human&nbsp; Services, West Central District Health Department, Great Plains Health, Ready to Serve&nbsp; Volunteer Program (RSVP), Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful, Bomgaars, the&nbsp; North Platte Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Nebraska State&nbsp; Patrol.&nbsp;&nbsp;"By offering a safe, accessible way for community members to dispose of their medications, we&nbsp; continue to protect public health and safeguard our local environment,” said Erin Bone,&nbsp; Substance Abuse Prevention System Coordinator of Community Connections. “The ongoing&nbsp; support of our local partners is instrumental in ensuring these events reach as many people as&nbsp; possible.”&nbsp;Lincoln County residents are encouraged to participate in future Drug Take-Back events to&nbsp; ensure the safe disposal of unused or expired medications. Annual Beef Feedlot Roundtables scheduled across Nebraska

The Lincoln County Cattlemen will offer a genetic pricing program on January 22 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in North Platte, Nebraska.

The program will begin in the Ag Building with a free social at 5:30 p.m. sponsored by Justin Thompson with American Family Insurance. A meal will be provided at 6:00 p.m. with the support of Zoetis.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will discuss genetic merit pricing and how it is being analyzed nationally by a task force. Members of the task force will be present to answer questions and provide more insight.

The panel will include Kent Anderson from Zoetis Animal Genetics, Matt Spangler from Nebraska Extension, and Craig Uden from Darr Feedlot Inc.

More than 95% of U.S. feeder cattle change ownership without the benefit of shared genetic information. Most cow calf producers spend time and money buying the right bull with good genetics.

This raises the question of why this information isn’t shared with buyers of feeder cattle knowing the cost of bulls. This program has the potential to provide valuable insight for cow calf and stocker producers who wish to attend.

Lincoln County Cattlemen offering genetic pricing program

Nebraska Game and Parks reminds people to use caution and test the ice when going onto frozen lakes or ponds after conservation officers responded to two incidents on Jan. 11 in western Nebraska.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in either incident, one at Lake Maloney State Recreation Area and one at Cottonwood-Steverson Wildlife Management Area, where all-terrain vehicles broke through the ice.

At Lake Maloney in Lincoln County, four people who had been ice fishing were riding the ATV at about 7 p.m. when it broke through the ice. Game and Parks Officers and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Other anglers initially assisted the four, who declined medical treatment from law enforcement.

No citations were issued, and Game and Parks will work with Nebraska Public Power District to remove the ATV from the lake.

At Cottonwood-Steverson in Cherry County, an all-terrain vehicle broke through the ice on Saturday; the incident was reported Sunday to Nebraska Game and Parks. The ATV remains in the lake.

People going onto lakes for winter recreation are reminded of the following clear-ice thickness guidelines, according to state fish, wildlife and parks agencies:

People should use an ice chisel or spud bar to strike the ice and evaluate conditions as they venture out.

Remember as winter progresses, ice changes. Cloudy ice of frozen slush is about half as strong as clear lake ice, so people should double the minimum thickness when encountering such conditions.

Ice near shore may be weakened by heat from the ground, or thinner because of rising water levels. If temperatures are below freezing, but warm during the day, go early and leave before ice melts near the shore.

Be especially careful on any ice that has moving water below it. Water movement hinders freezing causing hard-to-detect thin spots.

Materials embedded in ice, such as weeds or logs, also weaken ice. Large objects on the ice, such as duck blinds or ice shacks, can absorb the sun’s heat and melt ice.

If venturing out, tell someone your plan, bring a long throw rope and ice picks, and pack extra dry clothes.
