Last night, the North Platte Area Chamber &amp; Development Corporation held its annual meeting, an evening that Gary Person, President and CEO, described as “absolutely incredible.” With legendary Nebraska Huskers volleyball coach, John Cook, kicking off the event, the atmosphere was electric.

“To have John Cook here was incredible,” Person said. “The energy in that place was just… nobody will ever forget it. Even the most avid Husker fans really don’t understand his story until they hear his insights. He shared so many life lessons that you can apply not only to sports but to real life.”

Coach Cook’s talk emphasized the importance of “finding your why,” a theme that resonated strongly with Person. “He really nailed it. All of us need to reflect on why we’re doing what we’re doing in life — why the Chamber Development Corporation exists, why our companies exist, why we do what we do every day. It’s something you should answer each day: Why do I love what I’m doing? If you’re unhappy, why are you doing it? It really gave everyone a chance to reflect.”

The event, held at the Fox Theater and followed by the annual meeting at Venue 304, drew a sellout crowd of 600 people. After Cook’s presentation, Person and the Chamber recognized several key leaders and contributors in the community. Megan McGowan completed her term as board chair, and Tanner Patera and Hans Julius assumed the roles of chair and vice-chair, respectively.

Several individuals and businesses were honored:

Chief Industries, a Grand Island-based, family-owned company, was recognized for its significant contributions to North Platte. “They really embraced North Platte,” Person said. “They helped build nine speculative commercial buildings at our Twin River Business Park, which are now all full. They also stepped forward to address housing challenges with affordable solutions, including modular homes, multifamily units, and senior housing, as well as a new mobile home park on East Phillip Avenue. Their efforts are helping the community grow and thrive.”

The Chamber also awarded its Chamber Legacy Award to Larry and Paula Stobbs, recognizing decades of service and dedication to the community, including contributions to the Nebraska Teen Rodeo and Miss Rodeo America events.

Reflecting on the evening and the city’s progress, Person said, “If you look at the last four or five years, this community has performed like a champion. We’ve shattered economic records, redeveloped downtown, enhanced the mall, and expanded new industry. Projects like the industrial rail park near Hershey, the new rec center, and partnerships with employers like Sustainable Beef are transforming North Platte. The energy is incredible, and even longtime residents recognize the positive momentum.”

Person credited collaboration as a key factor in North Platte’s success. “The Chamber brings everyone together — public and private partners, city, county, schools, public power — and when everyone works together, incredible things happen. Strong leadership from our public officials, political courage, and personal investment make a real difference.”

As the evening concluded, Person reiterated the lasting impact of Coach Cook’s message: “Never just be satisfied with being a champion. Celebrate your success, but wake up every day ready to make a difference. That’s the spirit the Chamber Development Corporation brings to North Platte.”

HERSHEY, Neb. — The Hershey Public Schools Board of Education has once again been recognized among the top governing bodies in Nebraska. At the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB) Area Membership Meeting in North Platte on Sept. 3, the Board received the NASB Board of Excellence Award for the 2024–2025 school year.

Hershey was one of only 14 boards statewide to earn the award this year. Even more impressive, the district has now received the honor seven consecutive years, every year since 2018–2019 — a distinction achieved by only a handful of school boards across the state.

The NASB Board of Excellence Award is designed to highlight boards that go above and beyond in leadership, learning, and advocacy. To qualify, members must complete professional development, hold a goal-planning retreat to strengthen governance, and participate in the NASB Delegate Assembly, which shapes statewide education policy.

“Earning this award once is a significant accomplishment — earning it seven years in a row demonstrates a remarkable commitment to strong governance and student success,” NASB officials noted.

In addition to the group recognition, several board members were honored through NASB’s Award of Achievement Program:

Dickinson, N.D. – The Mid-Plains Community College men’s and women’s rodeo teams dominated the competition this past weekend at the Blue Hawk Stampede Rodeo, hosted by Dickinson State University. Both teams brought home team titles, with the men earning 1,245 points and the women securing the crown with 300 points.

On the men’s side, Kahiwa Augustiro stole the spotlight as the all-around champion, capturing first place in team roping with teammate Jace Richter and adding third-place finishes in bareback and bull riding. Richter also claimed second in tie-down roping, while Jackson Lunn took the gold buckle in bareback riding with a total of 150 points.

Other standout performances included Koy McAllister, who finished second in saddle bronc and eighth in steer wrestling, and Matt Miller, who earned the gold buckle in tie-down roping, rounding out a strong showing for the men’s team.

The women’s team also shined, with Laynee Ohm earning the reserve all-around title thanks to third-place finishes in goat tying and breakaway roping. Teammates Bailey Barker and Samantha Gerlach contributed important points with sixth-place finishes in breakaway roping and barrel racing, respectively.

The MPCC Rodeo Teams will return to the arena for the Mystic Stampede at the Dale Pahlke Arena in Mandan, N.D., Oct. 3-4, aiming to continue their winning streak.

MPCC Rodeo Teams Sweep Blue Hawk Stampede Titles

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Surrounded by students, staff, parents and members of Nebraska’s congressional delegation, Governor Jim Pillen signed an executive order at St. Teresa Catholic School in Lincoln, indicating the state’s intent to opt into the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit. Signed into law by President Donald Trump this summer as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill, this program paves the way for new school choice opportunities beginning in 2027.

“This program is a game-changer for Nebraska students and their families, generating funds that will help send students to the school of their choice,” said Gov. Pillen. “When it comes to educating our kids, we need to ensure that every student is in an environment that allows them to succeed. This program provides that opportunity, and I’m pleased to say that Nebraska will take part.”

The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit allows individual taxpayers to direct up to $1,700 to a qualified scholarship granting organization (SGO) in exchange for a 100% dollar-for-dollar credit on their federal income taxes. SGO’s will send donated funds to families to be used for eligible K-12 education expenses, including costs associated with attending private school. SGO’s can retain up to 10 percent of the donations for administrative costs.

“Through this program, up to 90 percent of K-12 Nebraska students in any educational setting could qualify for scholarships for high-quality resources,” said U.S. Rep. &nbsp;Adrian Smith, member of the Ways and Means Committee. &nbsp;

“Our students are our future, and I championed inclusion of this legislation in the Working Families Tax Cut package to empower parents with greater educational opportunity for their children. Thanks to Governor Pillen’s intention to opt-in to the program, Nebraska families can benefit from potentially billions of donated dollars leveraged by this program,” he added.

“Whether it’s a public school, private school, home school, or a hybrid of these options, parents have a right to direct the upbringing and education of their kids. The Working Families Tax Cut bill, which I supported earlier this year, included the first major nationwide school choice program,” added U.S. Rep. Mike Flood. “Thanks to Congressman Smith for championing this measure over the years and to Governor Pillen for opting our state in so Nebraskans can access more educational opportunities for their kids.”&nbsp;

Opting in is just one requirement of the program. In addition, participating students must be eligible to attend a public school, and families must earn no more than 300 percent of their area median income (AMI). The U.S. Department of the Treasury is expected to provide additional regulation around the program moving forward. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Sarah Schinstock grew up in Lincoln, attending St. Mary’s School. Of her seven children, six attend St. Teresa Catholic School. Her oldest daughter, who is disabled, attends public school. Schinstock said sending her kids to a faith-based school was an important choice for her and her husband, but it would not have been possible without scholarship assistance.

“Opting in to the federal school choice program will help us tremendously. It will provide more lasting scholarship money to aid us with tuition. Now, we will be empowered with the help we need to make the best educational decisions for our children.”

Nebraska remains one of two states with no formal school choice program. In 2023, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB753, the Opportunity Scholarships Act, which created a tax credit program for donations made to SGOs. In 2024, that legislation was repealed by lawmakers and replaced with LB1402, which created a state-appropriated $10 million program managed through the State Treasurer’s Office, to direct funds to private school scholarships for low-income, special needs and other students. Later that same year, voters repealed the law following a heavily funded national and state-run effort to put the issue on the ballot. &nbsp;

“The teachers union has tried at every turn to thwart the efforts of our lawmakers to deliver any measurable support for school choice at the state level. And ultimately, that cost has come at the expense of our most vulnerable students,” said Gov. Pillen. “This federal program marks a significant step forward in providing them with that educational freedom, at no cost to the state.”

Gov. Pillen said his administration will work with school choice advocates to produce a list of qualified SGOs for the Treasury Department to consider, prior to January 1, 2027.

“I’m very grateful to Nebraska’s federal congressional delegation for passing the One Big Beautiful Bill and to Rep. Smith in particular, for his specific advocacy through the Ways and Means Committee,” said Gov. Pillen.

Thanks to Governor Pillen’s intention to opt-in to the program, Nebraska families can benefit from potentially billions of donated dollars leveraged by this program,” he added.</p><p>“Whether it’s a public school, private school, home school, or a hybrid of these options, parents have a right to direct the upbringing and education of their kids. The Working Families Tax Cut bill, which I supported earlier this year, included the first major nationwide school choice program,” added U.S. Rep. Mike Flood. “Thanks to Congressman Smith for championing this measure over the years and to Governor Pillen for opting our state in so Nebraskans can access more educational opportunities for their kids.”&nbsp;</p><p>Opting in is just one requirement of the program. In addition, participating students must be eligible to attend a public school, and families must earn no more than 300 percent of their area median income (AMI). The U.S. Department of the Treasury is expected to provide additional regulation around the program moving forward. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Sarah Schinstock grew up in Lincoln, attending St. Mary’s School. Of her seven children, six attend St. Teresa Catholic School. Her oldest daughter, who is disabled, attends public school. Schinstock said sending her kids to a faith-based school was an important choice for her and her husband, but it would not have been possible without scholarship assistance.</p><p>“Opting in to the federal school choice program will help us tremendously. It will provide more lasting scholarship money to aid us with tuition. Now, we will be empowered with the help we need to make the best educational decisions for our children.”</p><p>Nebraska remains one of two states with no formal school choice program. In 2023, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB753, the Opportunity Scholarships Act, which created a tax credit program for donations made to SGOs. In 2024, that legislation was repealed by lawmakers and replaced with LB1402, which created a state-appropriated $10 million program managed through the State Treasurer’s Office, to direct funds to private school scholarships for low-income, special needs and other students. Later that same year, voters repealed the law following a heavily funded national and state-run effort to put the issue on the ballot. &nbsp;</p><p>“The teachers union has tried at every turn to thwart the efforts of our lawmakers to deliver any measurable support for school choice at the state level. And ultimately, that cost has come at the expense of our most vulnerable students,” said Gov. Pillen. “This federal program marks a significant step forward in providing them with that educational freedom, at no cost to the state.”</p><p>Gov. Pillen said his administration will work with school choice advocates to produce a list of qualified SGOs for the Treasury Department to consider, prior to January 1, 2027.</p><p>“I’m very grateful to Nebraska’s federal congressional delegation for passing the One Big Beautiful Bill and to Rep. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Public Schools Foundation (NPPSF) celebrated generosity and community spirit Friday evening with its annual Change Wars March at Bauer Field, where elementary students were recognized for raising more than $12,000 for classrooms, teachers, and students across the district.

The top fundraising classroom was Ms. Brinegar’s 2nd grade at McDonald Elementary, which earned district honors. Students from all seven elementary schools lined up at the south end of the field and paraded across the stadium before kickoff.

“It was a great night,” said Terri Burchell, executive director of the NPPS Foundation. “We had students, teachers and principals from all seven elementary schools. NebraskaLand Bank grilled up several hundred hamburgers and hotdogs to benefit the NPHS FCCLA Club. The NPPS Foundation also paid gate fees Friday for families to stay and cheer on the Bulldogs.”

The evening began with the NPPS Foundation Cookout in the North Platte High School parking lot, sponsored by NebraskaLand Bank, and led directly into the football game under the lights.

On the field, the Columbus Discoverers spoiled the celebration, defeating North Platte 42-6. Columbus improved to 4-1, while North Platte dropped to 0-5.

McDonald 2nd Graders Lead Change Wars 

COZAD, Neb. — Ghosts, goblins, and superheroes will soon fill the streets of Cozad as the Chamber of Commerce gears up for its annual Spook Night. The family-friendly Halloween tradition is set for Monday, Oct. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., with festivities planned in the downtown area.

Pending city approval, streets will be closed along Meridian from 7th to 10th Street and 8th Street from “F” to “H.” Local businesses and organizations will line the sidewalks, handing out candy and treats to children.

Organizers say they are aiming for another evening of strong attendance, community spirit, and, hopefully, mild fall weather.

Businesses interested in participating can contact the Chamber to reserve a spot on the event map.

“Spook Night has become such a fun, safe tradition for Cozad families,” Chamber staff said. “We can’t wait to see the community come together again this year.”

The commissioners will open with prayer and consider claims and treasurer’s receipts before recessing as the Board of Equalization at 9:15 a.m. That session will include approval of minutes from the Sept. 22 meeting, certificates of correction and refund submitted by the county assessor, and motor vehicle tax exemption applications.

At 9:30 a.m., the board will hear a presentation from Erin Arensdorf of the West Central Area Agency on Aging. At 9:50 a.m., commissioners are scheduled to discuss a potential letter of support or resolution encouraging the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Academic Planning Committee to continue supporting the Community and Regional Planning program.

The board will also hear updates from elected officials and department heads, receive committee reports, and conduct the quarterly inspection of the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The evening will celebrate mentoring relationships, with recognition for matches that have reached one year or more together — including some pairs who have been matched for as many as seven years. All current and past mentors, mentees, and their families are invited.

Professional portraits of mentoring pairs will be offered by Devin Alexander Photography, with support from MENTOR Nebraska. Community Connections is a Tier 1 partner with MENTOR Nebraska, which provides resources to expand the visibility of mentoring across the state.

This year’s theme is gratitude, reflecting research from the Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring that shows gratitude can strengthen relationships, support youth development, and build resilience.

“Mentoring is not just about two people — it’s about the families and the community that surround them,” said Angela Hipp, mentoring coordinator. “We want this evening to honor not only the matches themselves but also the parents and caregivers who support their child’s participation, and the mentors who step forward to invest their time and energy.”

Community Connections has provided mentoring in Lincoln County for more than 20 years and continues to promote a mentoring mindset community-wide.

Local organizations and businesses will field teams competing for chili supremacy at 201 N. Dewey Street, with attendees able to sample entries and vote for both the best chili and best booth. Votes are purchased, with all proceeds supporting United Way programs that help local nonprofits, including Guardians of the Children and Lutheran Family Services.

“Thirty years is a huge milestone,” said Misty Robertson, FNBO Financial Advisor. “This isn’t just a cook-off—it’s a tradition that brings our whole community together to help neighbors in need.”

According to Matthew Beckman of United Way, donations stay local. “These funds go a long way to support our community here in North Platte,” Beckman said. “It’s exciting for people to get involved and see how their contributions directly impact their neighbors.”

The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with 11 chili teams registered so far and organizers hoping to reach 15. Participants will compete not only for chili accolades but also for booth presentation, with many teams decorating or adding themes to their setups.

A fan favorite is the “pie in the face” contest, where attendees vote for a local personality to receive a whipped-cream pie, with proceeds going to United Way. Nominations are still being accepted via <a>npunitedway172@gmail.com</a>.

🎙️FNBO Chili Cook-Off Celebrates 30 Years, Benefits Mid-Plains United Way

LEXINGTON, Neb. — Two Connecticut residents are facing major drug charges in Dawson County after a Nebraska State Patrol trooper discovered more than two pounds of heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Court records show Maribel Medina-DeQuinonez, 56, and Jose Cabrera-Mendez, 35, both of Bridgeport, Conn., were arrested Monday, Sept. 22, about three miles east of Lexington. A state trooper reported pulling over their eastbound 2020 Toyota C-HR XLE for following too closely. According to an arrest affidavit, Medina-DeQuinonez appeared nervous during the encounter, prompting the trooper to request a search of the vehicle.

The pair consented, and the search revealed what was initially described as a “kilo brick” under the rear seat. The substance field tested positive for heroin and was later weighed at 2.3 pounds, or just over 1,000 grams. Both were taken into custody and booked into the Dawson County Jail.

On Tuesday, Medina-DeQuinonez and Cabrera-Mendez appeared in Dawson County Court, where they were arraigned on charges of possession of 140 grams or more of heroin with intent to distribute and failure to affix a drug tax stamp. County Judge Jeffrey Wightman set bonds for each at 10% of $1 million. Both were appointed attorneys, and preliminary hearings are scheduled for Oct. 2 at 11 a.m.

Under Nebraska law, possession of 140 grams or more of heroin is a Class IB felony, carrying a potential sentence of 20 years to life in prison. The “no drug tax stamp” charge is a Class IV felony, punishable by up to two years in prison.

Prosecutors could also refer the case for federal review, as heroin trafficking across state lines often falls under federal jurisdiction. For now, both defendants remain in custody as the case moves forward in Dawson County Court.

The awards, known as the Dr. Allen G. and Kay L. Blezek Teacher Retention Awards, aim to help keep early-career agricultural education teachers in Nebraska classrooms. Recipients are all within their first five years of teaching and are eligible for increasing awards as their impact grows in the classroom, in FFA chapters, and within their communities.

“The Dr. Allen G. and Kay L. Blezek Teacher Retention Award is an investment in the future of Nebraska agriculture,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. “We are very proud to support these teachers as they get established in their classrooms and communities. Since agriculture is Nebraska’s leading industry, we know that investing in agricultural education and its teachers will continue to produce returns for years to come.”

The award, a long-standing program of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation, was renamed in recognition of an estate gift from Dr. Allen Blezek. Dr. Blezek was an agricultural education teacher, the first director of the Nebraska LEAD program, and a founding member of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation board of directors.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation Honors 22 Agricultural Education Teachers

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors approved the 2025-26 budget Wednesday during a meeting on the North Platte campus while also receiving updates on student life, faculty, and campus initiatives.

The meeting began with public hearings on setting the 2025 property tax requirement and adopting the college’s budget. No members of the public spoke during either hearing. MPCC President Ryan Purdy described the hearings as “pretty uneventful,” noting that most funding now comes from the state-funded Future Fund rather than property taxes.

“Our levy for the second year, our maximum, is $0.02,” Purdy said. “The board elected to stay with the $0.02 capital levy, which has been in place for about the last 10 years. That’s the funding we’re allowed to use for capital construction and facility renovation.”

The college’s total budget for all funds is just under $60 million, with $5.45 million funded through property taxes. MPCC maintains facilities across its 18-county service area, with a combined insurable value of $200 million.

Fall enrollment has increased 9.5%, and dual enrollment is up 24%, which Purdy said benefits students while supporting funding. “Right now in the fall of '25 compared to fall of '24, we’re experiencing about a 9.5% increase in enrollment, which is huge, and will help our funding. Dual enrollment has been fantastic…we’re seeing a 24% increase right now in dual enrollment across the service area,” he said.

Student trustees Vernon Graham of North Platte and Jackson Delevaux of McCook gave updates on intramurals, sports, concerts, and festivals. “It’s fun to hear the things that are going on—the intramurals, the student life, some of the concerts and festivals. Great to have students at the table to get their input,” Purdy said. 

Faculty representative Jesse Lovett highlighted English Department conferences and publications.

Other business included approving August bills totaling $1.4 million, settling a 22-year-old worker’s compensation claim, and carrying forward $18.6 million in unused budget authority. 

The next regular MPCC board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15 at MCC East Campus in McCook.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation will host its Change Wars Celebration and Community Cookout Sept. 26 at Bauer Field and the North Platte High School parking lot.

The night begins with a $5 cookout meal, sponsored by Nebraskaland Bank, from 5 to 7 p.m. Meals include a hamburger or hot dog, chips, and water, with baked goods available for purchase from the NPHS FCCLA Club.

At 6:15 p.m., elementary students will gather for the Change Wars March, stepping off at 6:30. The march highlights the generosity behind the $12,000 raised this year, money that will directly benefit classrooms, teachers, and students. The top fundraising classroom was Ms. Brinegar’s 2nd grade class at McDonald Elementary.

“This event brings our schools and community together to celebrate generosity and Bulldog pride,” said Terri Burchell, executive director of the NPPS Foundation.

The march will lead directly into the Bulldogs’ football game under the Friday night lights.

Jerome Gilg, a representative from Holy Spirit Church, says the festival has grown over the past decade into a highlight for the local community. “We knew that we wanted to do something of service in the community as well as build community within our church, and this is a good way to do it,” he said.

A roast turkey dinner is a centerpiece of the event, with meals priced at $15 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under. Guests can dine in or take advantage of a convenient drive-through option. The festival typically serves about 600 people each year.

In addition to the meal, the festival will feature children’s games like penny toss, ring toss, and a duck pond fishing game. Attendees can also enjoy a silent auction, a country store with baked goods, and a variety of raffle prizes—including over $2,000 in cash and hundreds of dollars in gift cards donated by local businesses.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Nebraska Public Power District, in partnership with Myers Construction, will close sections of the city’s bike trails for repairs beginning Monday, September 29.

During this time, the trails will be closed to all users. Residents and visitors are urged to use caution around the construction areas and to follow all posted signs for the safety of both the public and workers.

Bike Trail Repairs to Close Trails Along Canal and Tail Race

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The “Hot-N-Ready” wasn’t so ready Wednesday in North Platte.

Little Caesars suddenly closed its doors in the afternoon, posting a sign that read “closed until further notice” — and left customers scratching their heads and tummies rumbling. Local news outlets reported two employees were inside making the decision, but no explanation was offered at the time.

Naturally, locals wondered: Was it the ovens? The sauce? A pizza conspiracy?

The answer turned out to be a lot less dramatic. District Manager Kim Nitz swooped in on social media comments to clear things up:

“We’ll be open as soon as we can,” Nitz said. “We just ran out of product.”

In other words, the pizza place simply ran out of pizza.

Nitz explained the hiccup came while training new employees on ordering supplies. “Sometimes you gotta fail before you can succeed,” she said. “We’re human and we make mistakes — it’s how we learn. We cannot wait to be open again and serving all of you.”

So rest easy, North Platte. The Little Caesars isn’t gone for good — it just needs to restock before it can get back to fulfilling those pizza cravings.
