But the USDA says it is working to get voluntary compliance before referring violations to the Department of Justice. 

The Republican governor earlier this year pushed the state to join more than a dozen others to ban transgender athletes from girls’ school sports leagues.

 At the time, some opponents to the proposal argued that South Dakota’s law could imperil federal funding for the state’s public schools.

Nebraskaland Bank to host meet and greet with rodeo queens, petting zoo

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republican governor hopeful Jim Pillen scored the endorsement Thursday of the Nebraska Cattlemen, a top advocacy group for the state’s ranchers.

Pillen, a veterinarian and the owner of a hog farm operation, is running to replace current Gov. Pete Ricketts, a fellow Republican who leaves office in January because of term limits.

Brenda Masek, the chairwoman of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s political action committee, said Pillen has “walked in our shoes” as an agricultural producer and would be a strong advocate for the industry at the Capitol.

“Jim understands the concerns of the agriculture industry because he experiences them firsthand,” Masek said in a statement.

Pillen is running against state Sen. Carol Blood, a Democrat and former Bellevue city council member who was born and raised on a farm and has worked on various agricultural issues in the Legislature.

Pillen won Nebraska’s Republican primary last month out of a crowded field that included an opponent backed by former President Donald Trump. Before he won the primary, Pillen secured support from Ricketts and the Nebraska Farm Bureau.

Post Podcast: North Platte Optimists to host Kids Fishing Day at Fire Lake

One of the most notable times of year in Nebraska is underway: Construction season. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol are adding emphasis around work zones to keep construction crews and motorists safe during the summer months.

“The crews working on road projects during the summer months deserve safety on the job,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As they work to improve our roadways, troopers will be on patrol to keep crews and motorists safe, by monitoring for unsafe driving in and around construction zones.”

In Troop C, based in Grand Island, troopers will be performing localized efforts thanks in part to a grant for $41,300 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. Troop C’s effort runs through September 30.

“When driving in or near a construction zone, focusing on the road is imperative,” said Captain Jeff Roby, Commander of Troop C. “The choice to put the phone down could be a life-saving decision for one of the many professionals working on these construction projects.”

Here are some work zone safe-driving tips from the Nebraska Department of Transportation:

Nebraska troopers focus on safety around work zones

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation is pleased to announce their 2022 “Teacher of the Year” award winners in all categories.&nbsp; These exemplary district employees were awarded on&nbsp;May 20th&nbsp; &nbsp;during the Foundation's&nbsp;year-end teacher gathering.&nbsp;

The 2022 “Administrator of the Year” is McDonald Principal Kim Flanders.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mrs. Flanders is an NPHS alumna and started with NPPS District in 1995.&nbsp; Kim has been an elementary principal for ten years.&nbsp; She has been a teacher for several grades along with an instructional coach for the NPPS District. She participated in a cohort for Nebraska’s NAESP Pre-K-3 Leadership Academy, and received the 2021 Women of Achievement Award for Education and many other awards during her career.&nbsp; This year she started Mustang Meets at McDonald to strengthen the relationship between all grade levels and staff.&nbsp; Mrs. Flanders fosters the learning of students as well as staff.&nbsp;

The 2022 6th-12th&nbsp;grade “Teacher of the Year” is NPHS Business and Video Production teacher, Philep Willey.

Mr. Willey has been with NPPS District since 2013.&nbsp; Philep earned a Master’s Degree and is currently participating in the University of Nebraska in Lincoln’s education and human sciences fellowship with educators from California. He continues to further his education to share even more knowledge with the students. Philep works with students to produce many of the videos that are seen at games and on social media. He goes above and beyond for students and his peers.

The 2022 PreK-5th&nbsp;grade “Teacher of the Year” Cody 2nd&nbsp;grade Teacher Amanda Condon&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ms. Amanda Condon is an alumnae.&nbsp; She was hired in 2009 and has earned her Master’s Degree.&nbsp; This past year Amanda partnered with fellow teacher Stevie Reed to create “Nebraska the Good Life” one-of-a-kind ornaments for the 2021 National&nbsp;Christmas&nbsp;Tree.&nbsp; Cody was the only school in Nebraska chosen.&nbsp; Amanda was nominated and a finalist this year for the Women of Achievement award.&nbsp; She is an amazing teacher who works every day to build relationships with students and staff.

The 2022 “Employee of the Year” Special Services Administrative Assistant, Lynette Shannon

Ms. Shannon has been with the District since 2015 working at Adams Middle School until 2018 when she accepted the position of Special Education Secretary.&nbsp; Lynette’s dedication to not only Special Education but also to Buffalo Early Learning Center this past year has been very valuable.&nbsp; She works collaboratively across the district to ensure that the students&nbsp;are safe and communication to parents of preschoolers is done in a timely manner.

The 2022 “Bulldog of Excellence” is Tammy Michaels.

Ms. Michaels started with the NPPS District in 1998 and has earned her Master’s Degree..&nbsp; She started her elementary teaching at Cody then Osgood.&nbsp; She is now a preschool teacher at Osgood. Tammy was recognized as one of the employees of the month and ultimately was awarded Bulldog of Excellence.&nbsp; She is known across the district for her dedication to teaching.

These awards recognize and encourage the superior professional effort to improve instruction and to cultivate the continuation of educational excellence in our schools.&nbsp; Teacher and Staff Member Award Winners received a plaque and a $250 cash award.&nbsp; Administrators received a plaque and $1000 extra budget authority for their building/administrative area.&nbsp;

North Platte Public Schools Foundation announces Teacher of the Year, other awards

On May 31 at approximately 2:05 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance were called to a two- vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and 14th Avenue.

A northbound 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara failed to yield the right of way to a westbound 2014 Dodge Ram pickup.

"The resulting collision caused the Dodge pickup to roll onto its side while striking a light pole," Scottsbluff Police Sergeant Cody R. Enlow said. "The two occupants of the Dodge pickup were extricated from the vehicle by Scottsbluff Fire Department and transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries."

The 16-year-old male driving the Suzuki was issued a citation for failure to yield to a motor vehicle. 

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.&nbsp;

The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Public Power District assisted with the accident.&nbsp;

 In just two weeks, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) has brought in over 40,000 signatures, and qualified more than 15 counties. The campaign has recruited over 150 paid volunteer circulators who are traveling the state to help collect, and a team of over 600 volunteers have also ramped up their efforts. In addition to the overall signature requirement of 87,000 valid signatures on each of the two petitions, ballot initiatives must also qualify at least 38 of the 93 Nebraska counties. Currently the campaign has a combined total of 80,000 signatures across their two petitions.

“Over the last two weeks, Nebraskans have made it clear that they absolutely support this issue. They want to sign our petition to put medical cannabis on the ballot, and they have stepped up to help us do just that,” said State Senator Anna Wishart.

Crista Eggers, mom to 7-year-old Colton, and Statewide Campaign Coordinator said, “We need Nebraska to continue to rise up as they have these past two weeks. We cannot stop and we can’t slow down. Go sign the petitions, apply to be a volunteer or paid circulator, and donate if you are able. This can be done.”

North Platte diner recognized for amazing view

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Three lucky winners will get the chance to crash Gary's Superfoods in North Platte Noon Rotary's Grocery Grab.

The club is once again teaming up with Gary's Superfoods for the event, which serves as a fundraiser to support Rotary projects like Josh the Otter Water Safety Awareness Program, North Platte High School Food Pantry, Bloodhounds Blood Drive, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

The club held a drawing at Another Round Sports Bar and Grill during their regular weekly meeting on Wednesday.

The first-place winner, Wendy Thompson, will have three minutes to fill her grocery cart. Additionally, the second-place winner, Christina Butterfield, will have two minutes to fill her cart, and the third-place winner, Lori McConnell, will have one minute to fill her cart.

The event will take place at 3:00 p.m. on June 11 at Gary's Super Foods East 4th St. location.

North Platte Noon Rotary club announces 'Grocery Grab' contestants

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Police have made one arrest in a burglary investigation.

North Platte police said on April 5, a resident in the 600 block of South Walnut St. reported that, while she was away, several subjects had entered her home and removed property.

Police said during the course of the investigation, Kaitlyn Blaesi, 29, of North Platte, was identified as a suspect involved in the burglary.

Police said probable cause was developed to arrest Blaesi, and on May 31 officers placed her under arrest on suspicion of burglary.

Blaesi was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center. Her bond has been set at ten percent of $25,000.

Post Podcast: Lunar Organics to host Body, Mind, and Soul Festival in North Platte

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — One of the drivers in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nebraska-lincoln-323f0c0dc21a3b4680573ec9693fa529">crash</a>&nbsp;that killed two women and injured 20 bystanders watching classic cars cruise down a Nebraska street tested positive for marijuana, police said.

The 18-year-old Omaha man was driving a Ford Taurus that smashed into a Toyota Corolla carrying the two women who were killed Sunday night in Lincoln. He tested positive for drug use after the crash, but a breathalyzer test for alcohol use was negative.

The impact killed both women in the Toyota and sent both cars onto the sidewalk, where they struck a crowd of onlookers.

The 18-year-old had not been ticketed as of Tuesday, but the crash report said he was driving over the 40 mph speed limit when he went through a yellow light on O Street in Lincoln before the crash. Police have said neither of the cars in the crash was involved in the cruising event.

Hospital officials said only two of the 20 people who were hurt remained hospitalized Tuesday, with one in serious condition and the other in fair condition.

Police said that 20-year-old Emily Siebenhor and 22-year-old Edith Hermosillo died in the crash. They were both from Cozad and living in Lincoln where Siebenhor was a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The victims’ junior high cross country coach and high school counselor, Dustin Favinger,&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/lincoln-police-identify-two-women-who-died-in-crash-sunday-night/article_2da80d2b-630c-59b9-9097-4fae08fae3d9.html#tracking-source=home-top-story" target="_blank">told</a>&nbsp;the Lincoln Journal Star that they were great kids.

“It’s never easy to lose anybody and when you lose someone who is young, it’s that much more difficult and mind boggling to try and wrap your head around,” Favinger said. “They were just two really wonderful kids and it’s a big loss to our world to have them gone.”

Police: Driver in fatal Lincoln crash had used marijuana

On May 29 first responders from many agencies responded to Lake Minatare.

The Scotts Bluff County Communications Center received two calls that sounded like different circumstances.

The first call, at 3:36 p.m., reported “a 16-year-old male came here and advised he was hit by a tree and is hurting pretty bad...advised he was hit in the chest," said Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman.&nbsp;

Sixteen minutes later, a Game and Parks officer on scene said that the subject was alert and responsive...and responders could drop their emergency response.

The second call, at 3:37 p.m., reported “a 911 call with a female screaming, barely able to understand...heard terms, 'water is too strong…I’m getting…by the water'…help," said Overman.&nbsp;

The communications center made multiple unsuccessful attempts to call the party back.

"Eventually, law enforcement determined that both calls involved the same individual," Overman said. "The individual was transported to Regional West Medical Center by private parties. Law enforcement spoke with the parties involved and determined that the incident was accidental and did not involve any serious injuries."

Multiple Panhandle agencies respond to Lake Minatare distress calls

Entry-level shooters will have the opportunity to learn from a former Olympian next month in North Platte.

Ellie Schad will teach a shooting basics clinic June 11 at the&nbsp;Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club at Lake Maloney. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the&nbsp;Mid-Plains Community College Shooting Club for which Schad is an assistant coach.

“Anyone can attend the clinic, but it is directed at beginners – those who have not picked up a firearm before or who have done it rarely and just need a little extra assistance,” Schad said. “The purpose of the clinic is to introduce people who want to learn more about shotgun sports. We are going to provide a safe and supportive&nbsp;environment for them to do that.”

Schad is from North Platte and is an alum of MPCC. She was a member of the U.S. Shooting Team for 10 years, was part of the 2001 World Championship Team and was an alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

She’s captured national, international, world championship and world cup titles but remains true to her roots. As a former shooting sports state champion in high school who also competed at the collegiate level, Schad recognizes the importance of mentoring the next generation.

Coaching the MPCC Shooting Club and leading clinics such as the one hosted by the college allows her to do that.

Volunteers and shooting club members will assist her with safety and instruction the day of the clinic, which is open to anyone 14 or older.

“Participants will have to take their own shotguns and ammunition,” Schad said. “We’re planning to have 30-minute sessions with five students in each. Among other things, they will learn about basic safety, the eye-target relationship, how to break targets and how much fun that can be.”

The event will serve as a fundraiser for the&nbsp;Mid-Plains Community College Shooting Club for which Schad is an assistant coach.“Anyone can attend the clinic, but it is directed at beginners – those who have not picked up a firearm before or who have done it rarely and just need a little extra assistance,” Schad said. “The purpose of the clinic is to introduce people who want to learn more about shotgun sports. We are going to provide a safe and supportive&nbsp;environment for them to do that.”Schad is from North Platte and is an alum of MPCC. She was a member of the U.S. Shooting Team for 10 years, was part of the 2001 World Championship Team and was an alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.She’s captured national, international, world championship and world cup titles but remains true to her roots. As a former shooting sports state champion in high school who also competed at the collegiate level, Schad recognizes the importance of mentoring the next generation.Coaching the MPCC Shooting Club and leading clinics such as the one hosted by the college allows her to do that.Volunteers and shooting club members will assist her with safety and instruction the day of the clinic, which is open to anyone 14 or older.“Participants will have to take their own shotguns and ammunition,” Schad said. “We’re planning to have 30-minute sessions with five students in each. Former Olympian to teach basic shooting skills at NPCC

Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer and a dangerous time of year for young drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occur during what’s called the “100 Deadliest Days” - a period that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.&nbsp;

For every mile driven, new teen drivers (ages 16-17 years old) are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash compared to adults.&nbsp;Now that school is out for summer, these inexperienced teen drivers will have more time to spend on the road. That means more time driving at night and potentially engaging in risky behaviors like speeding, texting, or simply sharing the vehicle with teen passengers. The risk gets even greater when you add more vehicles on the road.

“This summer could prove to be even more dangerous for teen drivers as the 100 Deadliest Days coincides with what is expected to be a busier summer driving season than last year,” said Brian Ortner,&nbsp;spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “AAA expects two years’ worth of pent up travel demand&nbsp;to increase&nbsp;in the coming months. AAA: 100 deadliest days for teen drivers has begun

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed from the road 20 impaired drivers during Memorial Day Weekend. Troopers also assisted 226 motorists in need of help throughout the state.

The annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;national mobilization continues through this week. Troopers will continue working overtime as part of that effort to maintain a safe start to the summer driving season.

“Summer will be full of vacations and holiday celebrations,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If those events involve alcohol, plan ahead to have a sober driver. And no matter how far your travels take you, always wear a seat belt.”

In addition to the 20 arrests for driving under the influence, troopers also issued citations for speeding (292), open alcohol container (14), minor in possession of alcohol (14), driving under suspension (26), no proof of insurance (18), no seat belt (5), and improper child restraint (7).

Troopers in Troop D also participated in a localized enforcement operation focused on impaired driving around recreation areas. Troopers made seven DUI arrests as part of that effort this weekend. The Troop D campaign was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $10,030 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation -Highway Safety Office.

Neb. troopers arrest 20 impaired drivers over Memorial Day weekend

On May 30 at 9:45 a.m. a Harley-Davidson motorcycle occupied by two Dawes County residents were traveling west on Highway 12 in Utah near Bryce Canyon National Park.&nbsp;

 An antelope jumped in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the antelope and lost control causing both occupants to be fully ejected.

The driver and Dawes County Commissioner, 62-year-old Levi Grant sustained fatal injuries at the scene. 

"The passenger [61-year-old Mimi Wheeler-Groves] was taken by ambulance and then flown to a local hospital in extremely critical condition," Utah Highway Patrol said.&nbsp; "Helmets were worn by both occupants, but heavily damaged."

According to family of those involved in this accident, Groves also passed away from injuries.&nbsp;

2 Chadron residents involved in fatal motorcycle accident in Utah 

Governor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design of the next general issue Nebraska license plate. &nbsp;The design is a mosaic pattern depicting the Genius of Creative Energy and is based on artwork inside the Nebraska Capitol Building.

The original “Genius of Creative Energy” mosaic kicks off a series of mosaics around the Nebraska Capitol, all working together to relate the State’s history to the ideals of Western Civilization. &nbsp;Designed by world-renowned artist Hildreth Meiere in 1927, the Genius brandishes a lightning bolt in his right hand and is propelled across the sky by harnessing the power of the four elements.

The license plate design pays homage to this Genius and all the mosaics in the Nebraska Capitol depicting Nebraskans’ shared story. &nbsp;It was designed by Nebraska-based brand and design consultant Drew Davies. &nbsp;“I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity to design a license plate celebrating the creative energy of all Nebraskans," Davies shared.

“I want to thank the countless Nebraskans who have come to us with ideas and feedback over the years,” said First Lady Susanne Shore. &nbsp;“Ultimately, we found a design that every Nebraskan can relate to. &nbsp;I especially want to thank Drew for unleashing his creative genius to depict our state’s own.”

A new license plate is designed and implemented every six years, as is required by Nebraska law. &nbsp;Production of the plates is underway, with distribution to begin in January 2023. &nbsp;Owners of vehicles with a standard issue license plate will receive new plates from their county treasurer in the month the vehicle registration expires.&nbsp; This currently amounts to approximately 1.3 million vehicles statewide.&nbsp;

 </figure>News Release Governor RickettsGovernor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design of the next general issue Nebraska license plate. &nbsp;The design is a mosaic pattern depicting the Genius of Creative Energy and is based on artwork inside the Nebraska Capitol Building.The original “Genius of Creative Energy” mosaic kicks off a series of mosaics around the Nebraska Capitol, all working together to relate the State’s history to the ideals of Western Civilization. &nbsp;Designed by world-renowned artist Hildreth Meiere in 1927, the Genius brandishes a lightning bolt in his right hand and is propelled across the sky by harnessing the power of the four elements.The license plate design pays homage to this Genius and all the mosaics in the Nebraska Capitol depicting Nebraskans’ shared story. &nbsp;It was designed by Nebraska-based brand and design consultant Drew Davies. &nbsp;“I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity to design a license plate celebrating the creative energy of all Nebraskans," Davies shared.<figure>

Gov. Ricketts, First Lady debut 2023 Nebraska license plate design

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Two North Platte men have been arrested after police said they caught them burglarizing a home.

Police said at around 6:10 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a residence in the 1200 block of East 10th St. on the report of a burglary in progress.

Police said officers arrived and located Ryan Gabel, 33, and Russell Smith, Jr., 38, with a vehicle backed up to the home removing items from inside the residence.

Officers investigated further and learned that neither subject had permission to be in the residence or remove property.

Police determined there was probable cause to arrest Gabel and Smith on suspicion of burglary. They were jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

from nearly 5,000 entries, will be held at Another Round Sports Bar and Grill
at 1008 West 18th.

The Grocery Grab
is held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 3:00 pm at Gary’s Super Foods on East 4th
street. The holder of the first-place ticket will have 3 minutes at Gary’s
Super Foods to fill their grocery cart. The second-place ticket holder will
have 2 minutes and the third-place ticket holder will have 1 minute to fill
their grocery carts.&nbsp; 

The proceeds
of the Grocery Gab benefit North Platte Noon Rotary projects such as Josh the
Otter water safety awareness program, Bloodhounds Blood Drive, NPHS Food Pantry,
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotary Youth Exchange program.
