North Platte Plainsmen host doubleheader following rainout tonight at 5 p.m.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-If it wasn’t for the Cody Cavalry at NebraskalandDays and the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, there would be no doorknobs in the sponsor building and the NebraskalandDays parade would be chaos.

That might be an exaggeration, but the Cavalry, former board members of NLD, provides the volunteer help that keeps the statewide celebration, this year June 15-25, going.

Larry Stobbs and John Hales are just two of the many Cavalry members who served on the NLD board, then “graduated” to the Cavalry, where they are called on for whatever volunteer duties there might be.

For Stobbs and his wife Paula, one of those duties three years ago was making sure the new building, the Chute Nine building at the north end of the arena, had doorknobs. They installed doorknobs on all eight doors in the building, to help out.

And for John Hales and his wife Jan, his involvement with the Cavalry includes organizing the parade, this year held on June 18. Hales began that volunteer work when he was still on the NLD board, and it continued when he retired from the board in 2004.

On parade day, he can be found three hours prior helping line up the entries, starting at the corner of Bryan and Fourth Street. He’s on foot much of the morning, making sure everyone is in their right order, so as they pass announcers’ stands, they are announced correctly. The parade, which averages about 150 entries, is the largest in the state.

With about 130 Cavalry members in the club, their biggest job is serving beverages in the many hospitality areas at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

That’s a job both Stobbs and Hales really enjoy. They love seeing the people, greeting old friends and making new ones. “You get to reconnect every year, and that’s one of the neat things about it,” Hales said.

The Cavalry is called upon for tasks that the NLD board members don’t have time to do. The Hales painted the Chute Nine building when it was built. Stobbs, with help, cooks for and serves between 50 and 80 people for the setup crew when the stage is set up for the big concerts. &nbsp;

Cavalry members’ wives help, too. “My wife is as much a part of it as I am,” Hales said. Stobbs’s wife Paula is a member of the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant, so she finds lodging for the out-of-state queens who attend.

“All of our spouses help us,” Stobbs said. “If we have a project out there (at the Wild West Arena), most of the time, our spouses are out there helping. The Cody Cavalry is like a big family.”

The Cavalry is able to offer more hours of volunteer labor than the board can, and that helps, Hales said. “The Cavalry is the go-to organization for the board because we cover a lot of bases for them that they couldn’t get done on their own.”

Both men take great pride in being part of the Cavalry, the friendships, and in the NLD celebration.

“I’m damn proud to be involved,” Hales said. “I enjoy it so much. The whole celebration means a lot to me, to be able to continue to serve after being on the board. I enjoy every minute of it.”

NLD “is the biggest thing that happens in North Platte all year long,” Stobbs said. “And it’s fun to be a part of it.

“It’s the little things you can do to help.”

This year’s NebraskalandDays runs June 15-25. The Buffalo Bill Rodeo kicks off the celebration June 15-18 with nightly performances at 8 pm. The 2022 Summer Jam Concert Series Lineup presented by Viaro Wireless includes Tim McGraw on June 25 and Miranda Lambert on June 26.

Retired board members offer volunteer help for NebraskalandDays celebration

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.-A manhunt is underway for the suspect in a fatal shooting in Scottsbluff.

Scottsbluff police said the shooting happened at around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers responded to the 1700 block of Avenue Z, where they found a 60-year-old woman who had been shot. Officers and medical personnel attempted to perform life-saving measures but were unable to.

Police have identified a relative of the woman, Davin Darayle Saunders, 38, as the suspect and a manhunt is currently underway.

Saunders is described as an African-American male, 5'11", weighing 205 pounds. Police said Saunders should be considered armed and dangerous. He was reportedly driving a gold Chevrolet Impala which police have recovered.

Anyone with information on Saunders' whereabouts is encouraged to contact&nbsp;Scottsbluff police at (308) 632 7176.

KEARNEY – Educational leadership has never been more important, according to Mike Teahon.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, an ongoing teacher shortage and other challenges, it’s also more difficult than ever, he added.

“Leadership can be very lonely,” said Teahon, an associate professor and chair of the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Department of Educational Administration.

A former school administrator in Amherst, Dunning and Gothenburg, Teahon believes the key to effective school leadership is getting people involved and engaged at every level – from bus drivers and custodians to teachers and technology directors.

“A lot of times people see leadership as administrators. It’s more than that,” he said. “Leadership capacity exists at all levels. Some of the most successful districts have strong teacher-leaders who work together with the administrative team.”

Teahon and his colleagues in the UNK Department of Educational Administration promote this model through the NexGen Leadership Academy, a program launched last fall to develop and support current and future leaders in Nebraska’s educational system.

The two-year academy includes a variety of collaborative activities, both virtual and face-to-face, that allow participants to learn from each other as well as recognized experts and leaders in the field of education. There are mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities, “job-a-like” cohort meetings for educators with similar responsibilities and goals and district-specific meetings to discuss local strategies.

Participants can choose to complete a series of four online graduate courses that focus on school leadership and culture, with these credit hours counting toward an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/edad/index.php">educational administration program at UNK</a>.

A total of 150 educators representing school districts from Bayard to Blair are part of the academy’s first two cohorts. On Monday, roughly 100 of them were on campus for the inaugural NexGen Leadership Academy Summit, an event featuring keynote speakers, breakout sessions, a panel discussion and networking.

Columbus Public Schools Superintendent Troy Loeffelholz attended with several staff members. He was invited to speak to academy participants last fall, then recognized it would be a great program for CPS teachers who are currently in leadership positions or are interested in pursuing one. About 20 people applied for the district’s 12 allotted spots.

“We know that we have to start recruiting from within to fill our leadership positions,” Loeffelholz said. “Instead of relying on the lottery to see what kind of applicants are out there – because they’re few and far between – we decided we needed to grow our own.”

Loeffelholz hopes the NexGen Leadership Academy can help CPS develop an internal talent pipeline by giving employees the tools they need to succeed in these positions.

“We want to broaden their horizons in the way they think about leadership and how to work with students and educators,” he said.

Katie Burger, an instructional facilitator at York Public Schools, signed up for the NexGen Leadership Academy as part of the inaugural cohort last fall. She called it a “low-stress” way to further develop her professional skills.

“I love that this academy brings in all different types of leaders,” she said. “Every month when we hear from our presenters, they all have a different perspective on the same topic. I really enjoy learning from all those different people.”

The academy gave Burger the confidence she needed to pursue a new position at York Public Schools, where she’ll be the assistant elementary principal in 2022-23.

“I just have a desire to serve, and that’s the next step to continue serving my community and school,” said Burger, who received her school principalship endorsement from UNK.

The 34-year-old knows the knowledge and connections she’s gained through the NexGen Leadership Academy will benefit her now and well into the future.

“That’s what we’re trying to do in all of these districts,” Teahon noted. “My goal is to build leadership capacity at all levels across the state.”

UNK program prepares next generation of Nebraska school leaders

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Pine Ridge man, accused in a shooting that left the victim partially paralyzed, has been found guilty of eight federal charges.

 The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Isaac Roubideaux was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and six other charges. 

Roubideaux was indicted by a federal grand jury in December. 

The assault and firearms charges relate to Roubideaux shooting another man in the back on Nov. 18, 2021, resulting in the victim suffering permanent paralysis below his waistline. 

The defendant was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Individuals interested in becoming substitute teachers can earn their credentials through Mid-Plains Community College.

MPCC is offering two of the classes needed to obtain a Local Substitute Permit from the Nebraska Department of Education. The permits are valid for three years. They allow for 90 full-time days of teaching per school year.

According to the NDE website, the requirements to obtain a permit include successfully completing 60 credit hours of college coursework, a professional education course and human relations training and obtaining a written request from the superintendent of a school district.

The Diversity Consciousness class offered through MPCC fulfills the human relations requirement, and Introduction to Professional Education can be applied to the professional education course requirement. Both will be online.

“We purposefully sought to offer these courses in a format that will more easily accommodate students juggling multiple responsibilities,” said Sheri Hink-Wagner, MPCC Humanities and Social Sciences division chair. “We know local schools are in desperate need of substitute teachers and wanted to offer a timely solution for those who would like help getting the credentials they need.”

There are two sessions of the two-week Diversity Consciousness course coming up this summer - June 6 and July 5. Four sessions will be offered in the fall – Aug. 22, Sept. 19, Oct. 17 and Nov. 14.

The Introduction to Professional Education class will also be offered this summer in a six-week format starting June 6. In the fall, it will be available as either an eight-week or a full-semester course, both starting Aug. 22.

Online training available for substitute teaching certification at MPCC

Police said on May 20 at around 10:52 p.m., officers responded to the report of suspicious activity in the 1200 block of William Ave.

Police said it was reported that Zachary Buhman, 29, had been inside the residence of the alleged victim sitting on the couch. The victim told officers that as they sat there, Buhman began grabbing at her waistband and inside her underwear, eventually touching her buttocks.

Following further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Buhman on suspicion of 3rd-degree sexual assault.&nbsp;

On May 23, Buhman was taken into custody and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

NORTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted sex offender who has spent most of his life running from capture.

On Monday, a police officer conducted a traffic stop on West Holmes Street near Brown Avenue in Norton, according to a media release.

&nbsp;The officer learned the driver identified as 69-year-old Dale Farris Session had an outstanding warrant in Wisconsin for failure to register as a sex offender and in U.S. District Court for a probation violation. Officers took Sessions into custody without incident.

According to Norton Police, Sessions was convicted of kidnapping and raping two hitchhikers in 1975.&nbsp; He was sent to a mental hospital until he escaped in 1976. Sessions lived under an alias for 18 years until he was arrested again in 1994. Later that year, he was indicted for kidnapping a juvenile girl with a firearm and spent 13 years in federal prison.

Sessions has been eluding law enforcement for many years including&nbsp; most recently when warrants were issued in 2019.  </figure>NORTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted sex offender who has spent most of his life running from capture.On Monday, a police officer conducted a traffic stop on West Holmes Street near Brown Avenue in Norton, according to a media release.&nbsp;The officer learned the driver identified as 69-year-old Dale Farris Session had an outstanding warrant in Wisconsin for failure to register as a sex offender and in U.S. District Court for a probation violation. Officers took Sessions into custody without incident.<figure>

 </figure>According to Norton Police, Sessions was convicted of kidnapping and raping two hitchhikers in 1975.&nbsp; He was sent to a mental hospital until he escaped in 1976. Sessions lived under an alias for 18 years until he was arrested again in 1994. Later that year, he was indicted for kidnapping a juvenile girl with a firearm and spent 13 years in federal prison.Sessions has been eluding law enforcement for many years including&nbsp; most recently when warrants were issued in 2019. AAA will be working to keep impaired drivers off the road for Memorial Day weekend. The Auto Club Group is reactivating its Tow to Go program for the holiday period, providing safe transportation for impaired drivers and their vehicles.

AAA Tow to Go has&nbsp;removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from the road. When called, a tow truck transports the would-be impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.&nbsp;The service is free, yet AAA asks that it be treated as a backup plan.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day – that’s one person every 52 minutes.

“Driving impaired is not worth the risk. It endangers you and the lives of everyone else on the roadway,” said Brian Ortner, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “AAA urges people to identify a safe ride home before they party, but know that Tow to Go is available as a last resort.”

Emmanuel Oladeru, of London,&nbsp;England, signed to continue his athletic career with the North Platte Community College men’s basketball team as part of their 2022 signing class.

The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game last season for&nbsp;Brunel University in London. His talents on the court propelled the Hawks to an Academy Basketball League national championship, EYBL Central Division Group C championship, and a National Cup championship in 2020.

“It was clear the emphasis is hard work and winning,” said Oladeru. “As a player with high aspirations, I feel like North Platte will push me to become the best version of myself on and off the court.”

Emmanuel is the son of Sunny Oladeru and Risikat Olubodun.

On Memorial Day, we honor men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to our nation.&nbsp; Time and again throughout our Republic’s history, courageous Americans have ventured into harm’s way to protect the freedoms we hold dear.&nbsp; The liberties we enjoy wouldn’t be possible without their heroism.&nbsp;

A brief survey of history reminds us that freedom is rare and fragile. &nbsp;It’s not the norm throughout the centuries.&nbsp; When freedom is established, it’s often upheld at great cost through the selfless service of devoted patriots.&nbsp; Our Republic has endured for nearly two-and-a-half centuries due to the blood, sweat, and sacrifice of our military veterans. &nbsp;

One of the many things I love about Nebraskans is the honor we have for our fallen heroes.&nbsp; Our residents give generously to organize commemorative ceremonies, create parks, and build monuments to memorialize those we’ve lost in war.&nbsp; These tributes preserve the stories of Nebraskans’ heroic patriotism for future generations.

Bill and Evonne Williams, of Omaha, exemplify our state’s commitment to honoring those lost in military service.&nbsp; They led the creation of the Remembering Our Fallen Memorial to honor American military members who have died since 9/11.&nbsp; The memorial displays photos of the heroes who took the fight to the enemy after 9/11, deploying halfway around the world to dismantle terrorist networks. &nbsp;The brave sacrifices of these men and women in the Middle East protected our freedoms and restored peace and security here in America.&nbsp;

The national Remembering Our Fallen Memorial will be displayed in Omaha’s Old Market (12th&nbsp;and Jones Streets) from Friday, May 27th&nbsp;at 2:00 pm to Saturday, May 28th&nbsp;at 4:00 pm.&nbsp; The Nebraska Remembering Our Fallen Memorial will be displayed at Midwest Bank at 2601 W. Last month, Nebraska hosted the dedication of a physical memorial to members of the 73rd&nbsp;Calvary Regiment at Heartland of America Airborne Memorial in Omaha.&nbsp; It honors 51 of our nation’s heroes who died while serving in the regiment.&nbsp; The ceremony took place on the 15th&nbsp;anniversary of a terrorist attack in Iraq that claimed the lives of nine soldiers from the 73rd Cavalry, including two from Nebraska: First Lieutenant Kevin Gaspers of Hastings, and Staff Sgt. In addition to memorializing those we’ve lost, Nebraskans step up to support our Gold Star families in need. &nbsp;In January, Staff Sgt. Locker’s son, Preston, had his Chevy Malibu stolen from the Lincoln Northeast High School parking lot.&nbsp; Preston had bought the car with money his dad left him. &nbsp;

The thieves wrecked the vehicle, which police later found totaled and abandoned.&nbsp; Since the car only had liability insurance coverage, Preston’s family needed to come up with money to replace it.&nbsp; Family friend Stephanie Dowding started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money so that Preston could buy a new car.&nbsp; Nebraskans gave generously, exceeding her goal of $7,000 by donating double that amount. &nbsp;That’s the Nebraska Way, going above and beyond to support the families who’ve lost a loved one through military service.

We also saw that support last September when a Nebraska hero—fallen Marine Corporal Daegan Page—returned home after making the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.&nbsp; It was inspiring to see Nebraskans line the streets to honor him and support his family.&nbsp; Cpl. Page’s sacrifice is a sobering reminder that our freedoms can’t be taken for granted.&nbsp; We must continue to vigilantly defend them.&nbsp;

One hundred years ago, Willa Cather published the novel&nbsp;One of Ours, which won the Pulitzer Prize.&nbsp; The book and its main character were inspired by her cousin Grosvenor P. Cather’s service in World War I.&nbsp; Grosvenor grew up near Willa in Webster County and was Nebraska’s first officer to die in the war.&nbsp; He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for valor. &nbsp;U.S. Army records describe his heroism: “During a strong enemy attack Lieutenant Cather mounted the parapet of his trench, and, although exposed to withering machine-gun fire, he so skillfully directed the fire of his automatic rifles that the attack was repulsed. &nbsp;In this action he fell mortally wounded.”

A line from&nbsp;One of Ours&nbsp;is etched in stone at the national World War I Memorial in Washington, DC.&nbsp; It aptly describes the bravery of soldiers like Kevin, Ken, Daegan, and Grosvenor.&nbsp; “They were mortal, but they were unconquerable.”&nbsp; On this Memorial Day, we thank God for the unconquerable spirit of those who’ve given their last measure of devotion on our behalf.

129 named to MPCC Spring President's List

Communities across the five state DEA Omaha Division, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota, demonstrated their support for DEA’s annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by dropping off 18,729 pounds of unneeded medications at 176 collection sites on April 30. Nationally, DEA collected more than 720,000 pounds of medications at 5,144 collection sites. Since 2010, DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has collected nearly 16 million pounds of unneeded prescription medications.

“The success of our event wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of our state, local and tribal law enforcement partners,” DEA Omaha Division Special Agent in Charge Justin King said. “This spring, despite several rain showers across parts of our Division, we collected more than nine tons of medications.&nbsp; We’re grateful for the support of our communities and to everyone who dropped off medications.&nbsp; Together, we removed the temptation for misuse of unused prescription medications from quite a few households.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the United States, over 107,000 people died as the result of a drug overdose last year. This figure means that someone in the United States is dying of a drug overdose every five minutes.

Take Back Day events provide easy, no-cost opportunities to dispose of medicines stored in the home that are susceptible to abuse and theft. There are many permanent drug-drop boxes located in communities across the country. DEA Omaha collects nearly 19K pounds of medication on Take Back Day

Memorial Day weekend, the official kick-off to summer camping season, is nearly here, and those hoping to snag a perfect camping spot still have plenty of options.

While many prime reservation-only spots already have been reserved, many more sites are available first-come, first-served at state parks across Nebraska. Those open to camping a bit further from the lake or a bit further from home can find a serene setting or a fun opportunity for adventure.

Gering, NE –&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With Memorial Day right around the corner, the busy summer season is about to start at Scotts Bluff National Monument. To accommodate increased visitation and longer daylight hours, extended operating hours will take effect on Saturday, May 28th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Summer Visitor Center hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Summit Road will be open to motorized vehicles from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and all vehicles must be down, off the road by 6:00 p.m. The entrance booth will be staffed during Summit Road operating hours. These operating hours will be in effect through Labor Day weekend as staffing allows. Park grounds, including the trails, are open from sunrise to sunset year around. As a reminder, walking or biking on the Summit Road during operating hours is prohibited for safety reasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Summer hours to start at Scotts Bluff National Monument 

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte woman had the charges against her reduced in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

Harlie Saathoff, 21, appeared in Lincoln County District Court for a status hearing.

As part of a plea bargain, Lincoln County prosecutors amended one charge, 2nd-degree murder to manslaughter, and dropped a use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony charge. Saathoff pleaded no contest to the manslaughter charge.

Prosecutors&nbsp;said it was Saathoff who called 911 on Nov. 12, 2020, to report she had stabbed Bryce Wood, 20, during an argument. 

Court records say arriving officers and medics found Wood lying face down in a pool of blood in a bedroom. Investigators said they also found an 11-inch kitchen knife on the bedroom floor of the apartment Wood and Saathoof shared.

Saathoff admitted using the knife to stab Wood. Saathoff has said she retrieved the knife to protect herself from Wood, and her attorney has argued that the stabbing and Wood's death were unintentional.

Saathoff faces up to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced on August 6 at 10:00 a.m.

Murder charges against North Platte woman amended to manslaughter

EDGEMONT, S.D. – &nbsp;One man died Sunday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash east of Edgemont.

Names of the six people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2011 Toyota Tundra was eastbound on U.S. Highway 18 when it slowed down to make a left-hand turn onto Red Canyon Road. The Toyota was rear-ended by a southbound 2008 GMC Sierra pickup. The collision sent the Toyota into the westbound lane where it was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup. The Toyota tipped over and the 57-year-old male driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. His seatbelt use is under investigation.

The 53-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet pickup and a 57-year-old female passenger both suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Both were air transported to a Rapid City hospital. 

The other female passenger, 43 years old, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The 58-year-old male passenger was not injured. All four were wearing seatbelts.

The 19-year-old female driver of the GMC pickup sustained minor injuries and was not transported. She was wearing a seatbelt.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. 

All information released so far is only preliminary.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Pre-orders can be placed for Sweet Saloon sticky buns beginning June 7.

The Sweet Saloon is a fundraiser for the North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team. It’s hosted every year at the McDaid Activities Center in conjunction with NEBRASKAland Days, the official state celebration.

Athletes, coaches and volunteers spend days making “melt-in-your-mouth” sticky buns, the proceeds from which go toward NPCC volleyball scholarships.

“We are excited to be able to do Sweet Saloon this year,” said Alexa McCall, NPCC Knights head volleyball coach. “The community support that the volleyball program receives through this fundraiser is always amazing, and we are very thankful. It is a fun time for the girls to be out in the community and learn about North Platte. We would like to extend a special thank you to Hiland Dairy for donating products to help us and also to the pickup locations for working with us as well.”

The actual event is June 14-16, but it’s recommended that orders be called in or placed online ahead of time to ensure rolls are available. Pre-orders can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon</a>&nbsp;and (308) 535-3696 up until noon the day before rolls are needed.

The cost is $20 per dozen. Half dozen orders will also be accepted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The sticky buns can be picked up at McDaid Elementary, the Do-It Center, Westfield Pharmacy, Sports Shoppe and the Welcome Center on NPCC’s South Campus.

A delivery option is also available with a $5 fee for those who order a minimum of two dozen rolls.

 </figure>By HEATHER JOHNSON North Platte Community CollegeNORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Pre-orders can be placed for Sweet Saloon sticky buns beginning June 7.The Sweet Saloon is a fundraiser for the North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team. It’s hosted every year at the McDaid Activities Center in conjunction with NEBRASKAland Days, the official state celebration.Athletes, coaches and volunteers spend days making “melt-in-your-mouth” sticky buns, the proceeds from which go toward NPCC volleyball scholarships.“We are excited to be able to do Sweet Saloon this year,” said Alexa McCall, NPCC Knights head volleyball coach. “The community support that the volleyball program receives through this fundraiser is always amazing, and we are very thankful. It is a fun time for the girls to be out in the community and learn about North Platte. We would like to extend a special thank you to Hiland Dairy for donating products to help us and also to the pickup locations for working with us as well.”The actual event is June 14-16, but it’s recommended that orders be called in or placed online ahead of time to ensure rolls are available. Pre-orders can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon</a>&nbsp;and (308) 535-3696 up until noon the day before rolls are needed.The cost is $20 per dozen. Effective Monday, May 23, masks must be worn in all areas on the UNMC campus.

UNMC is updating its masking guidance due to a rise in COVID-19 transmission across the state and a sharp increase in the positivity rate for UNMC asymptomatic saliva PCR tests done on the med center campus.

In late April, campus testing yielded a positivity&nbsp;rate of 0.8%. By early May, that had climbed to 9.2%, and mirrors increased positivity rates seen across the state and country.

"The safety of our faculty, staff and students continues to be our north star," said Jane Meza, PhD,&nbsp;interim executive director for health security for UNMC. "Based on current data, these steps are important to protect our mission-critical work."

Nebraska Medicine updated its mask guidance on May 20, noting an increase in both community transmission rates and employee absenteeism.

The campus community is strongly encouraged to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unmc.edu/news.cfm?match=26394">self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily using the 1-Check UNMC app</a>&nbsp;and get&nbsp;their vaccine&nbsp;boosters as recommended by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html#recommendations">CDC</a>.

 <li>Procedural masks (surgical, N95s, KN95s) are required for all UNMC students, staff, faculty and visitors in:Public, common and patient-facing areas across all UNMC campuses. Public and common areas include but are not limited to: Clinics, hallways, elevators, atrium spaces, bathrooms, lounges, open areas in McGoogan Library and dining areas (except while eating); andNon-clinical, non-public areas, including classrooms, and shared office spaces, break rooms, cubicles and conference rooms.All research laboratories, instrument rooms and other support spaces unless they are the only one in that space. Some cores may require masks for all those in the core regardless of the number of users.</li><li>Public, common and patient-facing areas across all UNMC campuses. Public and common areas include but are not limited to: Clinics, hallways, elevators, atrium spaces, bathrooms, lounges, open areas in McGoogan Library and dining areas (except while eating); and</li><li>Non-clinical, non-public areas, including classrooms, and shared office spaces, break rooms, cubicles and conference rooms.</li><li>All research laboratories, instrument rooms and other support spaces unless they are the only one in that space. They also may be worn by individuals who are immunocompromised and/or at higher risk of severe disease, as well as those who are more comfortable masking or choose to do so for any other reason.</li><li>Campus administrators may provide additional restrictions for research specific activities and other unique spaces.</li>

Students should notify&nbsp;<a href="mailto:sepirtle@unmc.edu">Education Abroad</a>&nbsp;of their intent to travel.UNMC, as a part of the University of Nebraska system, adheres to the policy outlined in&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.edu/-/media/unca/docs/offices-and-policies/policies/executive-memorandum/policy-on-university-sponsored-travel.pdf">Executive Memorandum No. 25</a>&nbsp;and requires prior approval for international travel to higher risk locations (as identified by the CDC and U.S. Department of State travel&nbsp;<a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices">notices</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html/">advisories</a>). Travelers will be notified after they submit their Concur travel request if their destination is considered higher risk and additional information is needed.For any university-sponsored international travel, the following process takes place:<ul>
 <li>Faculty/staff submits their travel request in Concur. Students notify&nbsp;<a href="mailto:sepirtle@unmc.edu">Education Abroad</a>&nbsp;of their intent to travel.</li><li>Following supervisor and financial approvals, the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) will conduct an initial risk assessment and will inform the traveler if their destination is considered higher risk.</li><li>Informed travelers submit an online travel petition to be reviewed by the UNMC International Travel Review Committee.</li><li>After review, OGE will forward the petition to the Chancellor’s Office with a "recommended" or "not recommended" classification.</li><li>Chancellor approves or denies the petition and cleared travel will receive final approval through Concur. Students will receive an approval notification through Education Abroad.</li>
