Update: July 12 - Z 93.5 Country &amp; Flatrock 100.7 continue to be "Off The Air" on your radio due to a June Thunderstorm that damaged the radio tower south of Paxton, Nebraska. Crews identified the damaged parts, removed them, and the radio station is waiting for those parts and pieces to be manufactured, and shipped to meet the specific requirements of the radio tower. Eagle Communications management still expects the stations to be back up in July, although a specific date can't be locked in at this time. Listeners to these two radio stations can still listen online at <a href="https://z935country.com/">www.z935country.com</a> and <a href="https://flatrock1007.com/">www.flatrock1007.com</a> while we are off the radio dial.&nbsp;

(posted in June) Paxton, Ne - May and June thunderstorms were frequent and devestating to many in western Nebraska, Eagle Communications in North Platte and Ogallala weren't immune to storm damage.&nbsp; In the overnight hours of Thursday, June 13 as strong storms moved across the area,&nbsp; the radio tower that is home to Z 93.5 Country (KZTL-FM), Flatrock 100.7 (KRNP-FM) and KOGA-FM 99.7 is believed to have been struck by lightning causing the stations to go off the air. Eagle management was able to turn Flatrock 100.7 back on early Friday morning after that storm passed, but ultimately both KRNP and KZTL were unable to stay "on the air".&nbsp;

A tower crew from South Dakota was able to make it to the tower site, south of Paxton, Nebraska on Sunday, June 23 and began it's inspection of the tower. They would find holes in the hard transmission line about 97 feet up the tower along with burn scars in multiple spots up the tower, eventually finding a large elbow piece of the transmission line cracked with evidence of moisture in the line in addition to the electrical burns on the transmission line.&nbsp;

"Both Z 93.5 Country (KZTL-FM) and Flatrock 100.7 (KRNP-FM) are currently off the air while repairs are being made, we hope to have replacement transmission line, and all the parts and pieces that will be required to get us back on the air in place early in July" according to Eagle Communications' Nebraska Operations Manager Derek Beck.&nbsp;

Beck went on to say "we're still broadcasting, and you're still able to hear the local shows you enjoy on our stations, at <a href="https://z935country.com/">www.Z935country.com</a> ,&nbsp; <a href="https://flatrock1007.com/">Flatrock1007.com</a> or of course on our news and information websites at <a href="https://sandhillspost.com/">www.sandhillspost.com</a>&nbsp;&amp; <a href="https://northplattepost.com/">www.NorthPlattePost.com</a>.&nbsp;Everything is business as usual otherwise, we're just only available online while we make repairs for these stations".&nbsp;

Eagle reached out to iHeart Media (KOGA-FM) in Ogallala by email for comment about the transmission line outage that also affected 99.7's main feed line but did not receive a reply as of the posting of this story.&nbsp;

An excessive heat watch will go into effect for the listening area Friday afternoon and will be in effect until Monday morning. According to the National Weather Service, North Platte Office (NWS), the area in effect is most of Western Nebraska and North Central Nebraska.&nbsp;

For the listening area, high 90's and low 100's will be impacting the area Friday-Monday with the weekend seeing the hottest temperatures. For North Platte, Saturday's temperature will be 99 degrees and Sunday's will be 103 degrees. Curtis, Ogallala, Imperial, Alliance, Oshkosh, Sidney, Scottsbluff and more communities will be in the 100's both Saturday and Sunday according to officials.

The possibility of severe thunderstorms is predicted for Thursday night west of Highway 38. Storms may impact the area late in the afternoon through the evening according to the NWS. &nbsp;

Hot temperatures mixed with humidity can cause potentially dangerous heat illnesses to occur. Stay hydrated during this time and stay in a cool area. Also wear sunscreen when outside in the heat. Never leave pets or people in a vehicle during this time of extreme heat.&nbsp; &nbsp;

North Platte Police Department seeking public help identifying a subject

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– When visiting North Platte, the Golden Spike Tower or the Buffalo Bill State Historic Park might be at the top of the list. Yet, for some North Platte natives like Jennifer Robinson, Tree Lane Road might be the only destination in mind.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Many of Robinson’s fondest memories growing up are tied to Tree Lane Road: Cross country practice. Traveling to church. And capturing key moments with pictures. After finding her love&nbsp; for Tree Lane Road at an early age, Robinson is now giving back with the donation of a tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Tree Lane Road is a beautiful place, and it has brought me a lot of joy,” Robinson said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, as a yoga instructor and studio manager, Robinson takes every&nbsp; opportunity to visit Tree Lane Road when she returns home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With every visit, Robinson noticed the condition of the hackberry trees that were established in&nbsp; the early 1920s after the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center (WCREEC)&nbsp; opened in 1904. Robinson regularly received updates from family on the state of the trees and&nbsp; any weather events that may have impacted them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The timing of Robinson’s donation coincidently comes after a recent storm damaged many trees at the research center and by Tree Lane Road. Due to the storm, six trees along Tree Lane Road were cut down for safety reasons while others were trimmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The donation was timely because we had space for about five new trees to go in and were able&nbsp; to balance out the loss and damage of the road” facilities manager, Bob Skates said.&nbsp;

No matter how many cities or countries Robinson has lived in, she has considered North Platte to be home. When asked by her partner, Jaye Budd, what she wanted for Christmas, she knew that&nbsp; she wanted to help Tree Lane Road, a key part of what makes North Platte home for her.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Someone did something for you before you were alive that makes your life easier today, or adds&nbsp; beauty to the way you live,” Robinson said. "It is not a large amount of money to buy a tree, to&nbsp; do something, to give beauty to someone in the future. That is just a way to pay it forward.”&nbsp;

Robinson’s ties to Tree Lane Road are a clear example of how the University of Nebraska– Lincoln creates opportunities for communities to connect, whether that be through local&nbsp; programs, Nebraska Extension, or a place that brings community members together.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When thinking of the direct impact Tree Lane Road has had on the community of North Platte,&nbsp; Robinson sees it as a place to experience nature, connect with others, and capture memories.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Robinson hopes that others who have been touched by or enjoyed Tree Lane Road will follow in&nbsp; her footsteps and choose to donate a tree themselves.&nbsp;

“Someone planted those trees and did something for a future generation,” she said. “It is&nbsp; connecting to the past, to the present and by planting and adding more trees to keep it alive, we are connecting to future generations."&nbsp;

Yet, for some North Platte natives like Jennifer Robinson, Tree Lane Road might be the only destination in mind.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of Robinson’s fondest memories growing up are tied to Tree Lane Road: Cross country practice. Traveling to church. And capturing key moments with pictures. After finding her love&nbsp; for Tree Lane Road at an early age, Robinson is now giving back with the donation of a tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Tree Lane Road is a beautiful place, and it has brought me a lot of joy,” Robinson said.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, as a yoga instructor and studio manager, Robinson takes every&nbsp; opportunity to visit Tree Lane Road when she returns home.&nbsp;&nbsp;With every visit, Robinson noticed the condition of the hackberry trees that were established in&nbsp; the early 1920s after the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center (WCREEC)&nbsp; opened in 1904. Robinson regularly received updates from family on the state of the trees and&nbsp; any weather events that may have impacted them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The timing of Robinson’s donation coincidently comes after a recent storm damaged many trees at the research center and by Tree Lane Road. Due to the storm, six trees along Tree Lane Road were cut down for safety reasons while others were trimmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;“The donation was timely because we had space for about five new trees to go in and were able&nbsp; to balance out the loss and damage of the road” facilities manager, Bob Skates said.&nbsp;No matter how many cities or countries Robinson has lived in, she has considered North Platte to be home. North Platte native donates tree to Tree Lane Road 

North Platte, Neb. - Nearly three weeks after an early Saturday morning thunderstorm caused damage to the roof of T.J. Maxx, the store reopened their doors welcoming in shoppers on Thursday.&nbsp;

Back on June 22nd, around 3:00am, a thunderstorm hit North Platte causing damage across town including to the roof of T.J. Maxx, which forced the store to be closed for almost three weeks. <a href="https://northplattepost.com/posts/cd19611e-982a-413b-80b9-071797e375d0" target="_blank">The storm caused uprooted trees, took the roof off an outbuilding at Mead Lumber, Trego Dugan hanger doors were damaged and more.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;

T.J. Maxx, located in District 177, next door to Five Below, celebrated their grand opening on May 19th. The store hours are Monday-Saturday from 10:00am - 9:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am - 7:00pm.&nbsp;

Work Will Begin on US-183, North of Ansley Beginning Monday

VALENTINE, Nebraska&nbsp;– The Middle Niobrara Natural Resources District (NRD) recently conducted a thorough assessment of stream restoration projects within the Long Pine Creek Watershed (LPCW) following significant rainfall. Between June 17-21, 2024, Brown County landowners reported 9-11 inches of rain in the area. The restoration projects demonstrated remarkable resilience, exhibiting only minor erosion along the streambanks.

“Due to the diligent planning involved, we are elated to see that the conservation work has stood up to such significant rainfall,” said Middle Niobrara NRD General Manager Mike Murphy. “These efforts not only protect our natural resources but also enhance the quality of life for the residents and landowners within the Long Pine Creek Watershed.”

These stream restoration initiatives are a collaborative effort involving local landowners, the Nebraska Environmental Trust, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Ainsworth Irrigation District, the Brown County Commissioners, the Natural Resources Commission, and the Middle Niobrara NRD. The projects were identified and implemented as part of the Middle Niobrara NRD’s Water Quality Management Plan, with the initial phase focusing on developing the plan and identifying priority areas within the LPCW.

Between 2020 and 2023, three key stream restoration projects were executed to address critical issues such as water quality, fish and wildlife habitat preservation, stream instability, headcuts, scouring, erosion, excess sedimentation, and streambank degradation. These efforts aim to improve water conditions, addressing the LPCW’s status on the 303(d) impaired waters list. LPCW stream restoration work included bank stabilization, riprap, and re-seeding or vegetative covering to reduce erosion.

The outcomes of these projects are significant. They protect and enhance habitats across 36 miles of stream, improve water quality over an additional 27 miles of streams, and safeguard over 6,800 acres of land. These initiatives directly benefit more than 210 individual landowners and provide indirect benefits to more than 2,900 residents within the Long Pine Creek Watershed.

The stream restoration projects were funded with $1,746,530 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, $1,907,000 in federal funding, and supplemented by $652,819.71 in local match contributions.

Venango, Neb. - Fire crews were called to the Venango Water Tower earlier today as the tower caught on fire. The fire has been put out. Venango is located in Southwest Nebraska. The village resides in Perkins County.

Ogallala, Neb. - First responders responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning in Ogallala.&nbsp;

According to the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD), in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 9th, county tones dropped for a structure fire in the city. The tones dropped around 4:00am (MT). The Ogallala Police Department (OPD) were first on scene and controlled traffic while crews battled the fire.&nbsp;

The OVFD says in a release that the home was vacant and that the structure is standing but a total loss due to collapsed floors and other issues within the structure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The OVFD responded to the scene with command, 2 engines, ladder, and utility. The Keith County Emergency Management was on scene to provide support and rehab. Grant EMS were also called in&nbsp;due to high call volumes.&nbsp;

According to officials, no civilians or fire fighters were injured during the incident. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.&nbsp;

First responders respond to a fire call in Ogallala early Tuesday morning

In 2022, Nebraska Game and Parks confirmed the presence of a hybrid variety of the invasive aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil in Iron Horse Park Lake at North Platte. This aquatic plant grows dense mats and can overtake a waterbody quickly.

Game and Parks staff plan to use an aquatic herbicide called ProcellaCOR, which is a reduced risk herbicide, to treat the hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil. ProcellaCOR has no restrictions for water recreation, fishing, or fish consumption. Staff plan to treat the western half of the lake on July 11 and the eastern half on July 25, weather permitting.

“While Zebra mussels often are the species most folks think about, invasive aquatic weeds can also have a large impact on our Nebraska waters,” said Kristopher Stahr, Game and Parks’ aquatic invasive species program manager. “This treatment is a good reminder to always Clean, Drain, and Dry your watercraft to prevent anything from moving from one waterbody to another.”

Julie Geiser&nbsp;Nebraska Game and ParksIn 2022, Nebraska Game and Parks confirmed the presence of a hybrid variety of the invasive aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil in Iron Horse Park Lake at North Platte. This aquatic plant grows dense mats and can overtake a waterbody quickly.Game and Parks staff plan to use an aquatic herbicide called ProcellaCOR, which is a reduced risk herbicide, to treat the hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil. ProcellaCOR has no restrictions for water recreation, fishing, or fish consumption. Registration is not required but it is encouraged according to the Keith County Chamber. This free event features four classes: family, open, kids (0-14) and students (15-22). NebraskaLand Bank Sponsors New Scoreboard for North Platte Youth Baseball

SIDNEY – Brodie Mitchell and Alexys Hurt sat at a table inside a cozy coffee shop just off Interstate 80, sipping specialty drinks and discussing their decision to pursue a health care career.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney students talked about their desire to help others and make a positive impact on their communities.

“It’s a very challenging career, but yet a very gratifying one,” said Mitchell, a sophomore from Cambridge in the pre-medicine program. “When you can directly see how your work is improving somebody’s life, that’s something that’s just so rewarding.”

Mitchell wants to practice family medicine with obstetrics, allowing him to care for patients of all ages. Hurt plans to work in radiologic technology, another of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/index.php">20-plus pre-professional programs offered by UNK Health Sciences</a>.

“There’s such a wide variety of options in health care,” the sophomore from Dannebrog said. “You can go into a lot of things. It’s not just one specific career path.”

Both UNK students are part of the Health Science Club and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/scholarshipprograms.php">Kearney Health Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KHOP), a collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center that provides scholarships, academic support and professional development activities for Lopers who plan to practice health care in rural communities.

“Being from a small town, I know what rural hospitals do for communities,” Hurt said. “It’s a completely different experience from larger hospitals. In a rural hospital, you can do a lot more and you build more personal connections with patients because you’re in a smaller community. That’s a big part of why I want to stay rural.”

“I think there’s something to be said about the camaraderie that you build in a small town,” Mitchell added. “You’re not just another doctor. I want those personal relationships with my patients, because I feel like that makes everything much more gratifying and rewarding.”

They heard the same comments during a recent trip to Sidney, population 6,400.

Mitchell and Hurt spent five days in the western Nebraska community while participating in the new Rural Immersion Program.

Available to any UNK health science student, this innovative program gives Lopers an opportunity to experience rural health care firsthand, going well beyond the traditional networking events and hospital tours. Participants are exposed to numerous aspects of the profession – administration, laboratory services, emergency department, surgery, radiology and pharmacy, to name a few – allowing them to see how these individuals work together to care for patients.

Julie Calahan, engagement and retention coordinator for UNK Health Sciences, calls it a “transformative learning experience.”

“The Rural Immersion Program is a unique opportunity for our students to gain valuable insights and experiences that go beyond the classroom,” she said. “Students are able to connect with health care providers and participate in hands-on experiences, and they’re also able to learn more about the hospital and community as a whole.”

The program launched in January 2024, when two students spent time in McCook and shadowed at Community Hospital, which hosted another student last month. A total of five UNK students will participate through Sidney Regional Medical Center this summer, including Mitchell and Hurt.

“Our goal is to help with workforce demand across the state,” Calahan said. “When we place students in these communities for a longer period of time, they have a more in-depth opportunity to be engaged and learn about the dynamics of the hospital. They also have an opportunity to meet with community leaders and learn about local initiatives.

“When they finish their professional school and are ready to start their career, they have these connecting points back to these rural communities. Our hope is that they look back at those experiences where they really connected with a community and ultimately decide to live and work there.”

With more than 900 undergraduate students currently enrolled in UNK Health Sciences, the Rural Immersion Program could serve as an important recruiting tool for hospitals that are struggling to fill their workforce needs.

There’s an urgent demand for more health care professionals in communities across Nebraska, and Sidney is no exception.

Jason Petik, chief executive officer at Sidney Regional Medical Center, called the current shortage “scary as hell.”

“We have a workforce that unfortunately went through a pandemic in the last four years and that really hit us hard,” he said. “We’re really struggling to replace the people we lost.”

With roughly 400 employees and an annual payroll over $55 million, SRMC remains an economic driver for the region and, more importantly, a necessity for the people living there. It’s the second-largest critical access hospital in the state, providing services that would otherwise be a 90-minute drive away.

During their visit, the UNK students got to see a long-term care addition scheduled to open in September and they heard about plans to build a new cancer center. The current SRMC facility was completed in 2015, so it’s also a sign of the progress happening there.

“Sidney has a lot of great things going for it,” Petik said. “Yes, it is rural, and we don’t have access to absolutely everything all of the time. But we do have a very tightknit community and a very positive culture. We’re trying to grow.”

And they want UNK graduates to be part of that growth.

SRMC and more than a dozen other providers are part of UNK’s Hospital Partners program. Representatives traveled to Kearney for the first-ever Hospital Partners Networking Event in February and a group of KHOP students visited the Sidney hospital later in the semester.

Obviously, Petik hopes these interactions lead to employment offers down the road. But he also understands the importance of promoting rural health care across the state.

“We want to help them recognize that they can have a huge impact on people’s lives in health care, and it doesn’t have to be in Lincoln or Omaha,” Petik said. “It can be in Holdrege. It can be in Imperial. It can be in Gordon. These young adults need to realize that their skill sets are so needed in rural areas.”

Mitchell’s grandparents live in nearby Lodgepole and his aunt and uncle own and operate a popular ice cream shop in Sidney, so he was already familiar with the community.

Still, he was excited to see health care “from a different perspective.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from job shadowing, it’s that no matter where you go, it’s almost always different,” said Mitchell, who works as a medical scribe at Tri Valley Health System in Cambridge. “Yes, you’re still treating patients, but the structure isn’t always the same.”

He was “really impressed” by SRMC and the amount of community support the hospital receives.

“Listening to them talk about how important patient care is to them and how they’re trying to make it more efficient and effective for people makes me even more excited about where the future of health care is going,” Mitchell said.

“I really like it,” she said of Sidney. “There’s a lot more than what I thought. When they say a rural town, it’s not really what I expected.”

During a community tour, Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell showcased life outside the hospital. There’s a vibrant downtown with a historic steakhouse, fancy boutique, unique bicycle shop, “the cutest” two-screen movie theater and numerous other businesses. The Downtown Sounds outdoor concert series is hosted there each summer and there’s an ongoing effort to establish a “creative district” supporting similar activities and events.

Sidney also has a stunning golf course, beautiful parks and trails and easy access to outdoor adventures in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. The community is just 100 miles from Cheyenne and 170 from Denver for those who want “a little dose of city.”

A past chairwoman on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Kendra Mitchell and her now-husband moved there from Fort Worth, Texas, more than a decade ago to work for Cabela’s. Although the outdoor retailer is no longer headquartered in Sidney, the young couple stayed because they love the close-knit community.

“You don’t have to live in a big city to have a full life,” she said. “You can pursue a pretty adventurous career here in our small community.”

The vice president of patient care services at SRMC has lived in Sidney for nearly three decades, serving as director of staff development at a local care center and teaching nursing classes at Western Nebraska Community College before joining the hospital 13 years ago.

She describes Sidney as a “family” that takes care of each other.

“If you spend time here, you understand the importance of the hospital to the community and you understand the importance of the community to western Nebraska,” Slagle said. “You get immersed in everything we have to offer and really get a feel for how friendly this community is.”

That message wasn’t lost on the visiting UNK students.

“These critical access hospitals in rural communities, they want you here,” Brodie Mitchell said. “They want to show you what they’re all about because they want you to come work for them someday.”

“By spending the whole week here, I get to know these people and they get to know me,” he added. “Networking is a huge part of finding a job anymore, and it’s all about who you know. So the more people you know, the more options you have, the better set up you are for a future career.”

UNK Health Sciences plans to continue growing the Rural Immersion Program, with Cozad Community Health System joining in January and other hospital partners likely to follow.

“I want to be able to offer two to three Rural Immersion Programs every year for students to take advantage of,” Calahan said. “We’ll continue to make sure this is another resource for them so they can get the most out of their learning experience.”

I want those personal relationships with my patients, because I feel like that makes everything much more gratifying and rewarding.”They heard the same comments during a recent trip to Sidney, population 6,400.<h2>TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE</h2>Mitchell and Hurt spent five days in the western Nebraska community while participating in the new Rural Immersion Program.Available to any UNK health science student, this innovative program gives Lopers an opportunity to experience rural health care firsthand, going well beyond the traditional networking events and hospital tours. Participants are exposed to numerous aspects of the profession – administration, laboratory services, emergency department, surgery, radiology and pharmacy, to name a few – allowing them to see how these individuals work together to care for patients.Julie Calahan, engagement and retention coordinator for UNK Health Sciences, calls it a “transformative learning experience.”“The Rural Immersion Program is a unique opportunity for our students to gain valuable insights and experiences that go beyond the classroom,” she said. “Students are able to connect with health care providers and participate in hands-on experiences, and they’re also able to learn more about the hospital and community as a whole.”The program launched in January 2024, when two students spent time in McCook and shadowed at Community Hospital, which hosted another student last month. A total of five UNK students will participate through Sidney Regional Medical Center this summer, including Mitchell and Hurt.“Our goal is to help with workforce demand across the state,” Calahan said. “When we place students in these communities for a longer period of time, they have a more in-depth opportunity to be engaged and learn about the dynamics of the hospital. They also have an opportunity to meet with community leaders and learn about local initiatives.“When they finish their professional school and are ready to start their career, they have these connecting points back to these rural communities. Our hope is that they look back at those experiences where they really connected with a community and ultimately decide to live and work there.”<h2>FILLING A NEED</h2>With more than 900 undergraduate students currently enrolled in UNK Health Sciences, the Rural Immersion Program could serve as an important recruiting tool for hospitals that are struggling to fill their workforce needs.There’s an urgent demand for more health care professionals in communities across Nebraska, and Sidney is no exception.Jason Petik, chief executive officer at Sidney Regional Medical Center, called the current shortage “scary as hell.”“We have a workforce that unfortunately went through a pandemic in the last four years and that really hit us hard,” he said. “We’re really struggling to replace the people we lost.”With roughly 400 employees and an annual payroll over $55 million, SRMC remains an economic driver for the region and, more importantly, a necessity for the people living there. It’s the second-largest critical access hospital in the state, providing services that would otherwise be a 90-minute drive away.During their visit, the UNK students got to see a long-term care addition scheduled to open in September and they heard about plans to build a new cancer center. The current SRMC facility was completed in 2015, so it’s also a sign of the progress happening there.“Sidney has a lot of great things going for it,” Petik said. “Yes, it is rural, and we don’t have access to absolutely everything all of the time. But we do have a very tightknit community and a very positive culture. We’re trying to grow.”And they want UNK graduates to be part of that growth.SRMC and more than a dozen other providers are part of UNK’s Hospital Partners program. Representatives traveled to Kearney for the first-ever Hospital Partners Networking Event in February and a group of KHOP students visited the Sidney hospital later in the semester.Obviously, Petik hopes these interactions lead to employment offers down the road. But he also understands the importance of promoting rural health care across the state.“We want to help them recognize that they can have a huge impact on people’s lives in health care, and it doesn’t have to be in Lincoln or Omaha,” Petik said. “It can be in Holdrege. It can be in Imperial. It can be in Gordon. These young adults need to realize that their skill sets are so needed in rural areas.”<h2>BETTER FUTURE</h2>Mitchell’s grandparents live in nearby Lodgepole and his aunt and uncle own and operate a popular ice cream shop in Sidney, so he was already familiar with the community.Still, he was excited to see health care “from a different perspective.”“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from job shadowing, it’s that no matter where you go, it’s almost always different,” said Mitchell, who works as a medical scribe at Tri Valley Health System in Cambridge. “Yes, you’re still treating patients, but the structure isn’t always the same.”He was “really impressed” by SRMC and the amount of community support the hospital receives.“Listening to them talk about how important patient care is to them and how they’re trying to make it more efficient and effective for people makes me even more excited about where the future of health care is going,” Mitchell said.Hurt also had a positive experience.“I really like it,” she said of Sidney. “There’s a lot more than what I thought. When they say a rural town, it’s not really what I expected.”During a community tour, Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell showcased life outside the hospital. There’s a vibrant downtown with a historic steakhouse, fancy boutique, unique bicycle shop, “the cutest” two-screen movie theater and numerous other businesses. The Downtown Sounds outdoor concert series is hosted there each summer and there’s an ongoing effort to establish a “creative district” supporting similar activities and events.Sidney also has a stunning golf course, beautiful parks and trails and easy access to outdoor adventures in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. The community is just 100 miles from Cheyenne and 170 from Denver for those who want “a little dose of city.”A past chairwoman on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Kendra Mitchell and her now-husband moved there from Fort Worth, Texas, more than a decade ago to work for Cabela’s. Although the outdoor retailer is no longer headquartered in Sidney, the young couple stayed because they love the close-knit community.“You don’t have to live in a big city to have a full life,” she said. “You can pursue a pretty adventurous career here in our small community.”Julie Slagle agrees.The vice president of patient care services at SRMC has lived in Sidney for nearly three decades, serving as director of staff development at a local care center and teaching nursing classes at Western Nebraska Community College before joining the hospital 13 years ago.She describes Sidney as a “family” that takes care of each other.“If you spend time here, you understand the importance of the hospital to the community and you understand the importance of the community to western Nebraska,” Slagle said. “You get immersed in everything we have to offer and really get a feel for how friendly this community is.”That message wasn’t lost on the visiting UNK students.“These critical access hospitals in rural communities, they want you here,” Brodie Mitchell said. “They want to show you what they’re all about because they want you to come work for them someday.”“By spending the whole week here, I get to know these people and they get to know me,” he added. “Networking is a huge part of finding a job anymore, and it’s all about who you know. So the more people you know, the more options you have, the better set up you are for a future career.”UNK Health Sciences plans to continue growing the Rural Immersion Program, with Cozad Community Health System joining in January and other hospital partners likely to follow.“I want to be able to offer two to three Rural Immersion Programs every year for students to take advantage of,” Calahan said. “We’ll continue to make sure this is another resource for them so they can get the most out of their learning experience.”

On May 2nd, in a social media post, Good Life on the Bricks announced about a small fire that happened in the building that occurred on that Tuesday (April 29th) and that the location was temporarily closed. The fire occurred around 4:00am that morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Sunday evening, the Hiebners&nbsp;announced on social media "We’re grateful for all of the support we have received but it’s with great sadness that we confirm we will be closing our North Platte location permanently."&nbsp;

Good Life on the Bricks has been serving the North Platte community for 5 years and the crew on social media thanked the North Platte community for making it the best 5 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Good Life on the Bricks sister restaurant is down the road in Gothenburg called Good Life, Gothenburg. Some employees from the North Platte location will transition to the Gothenburg location.&nbsp;
