The suspect from the Friday evening standoff has been identified as Marshall&nbsp;Gallegos and is currently being charged with&nbsp;Aggravated Assault-Police Officer, Flight To Avoid-Prosecution, Confinement, Etc, Willful Reckless Driving, Obstructing A Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest. He is currently lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

North Platte, Neb. - A standoff in North Platte ends with one suspect in police custody.&nbsp;

According to reports and scanner traffic, a suspect barricaded himself in a home near West 5th Street and North Sheridan Avenue around 5:30 pm. Reports say the suspect was fleeing from police in a high-speed pursuit and ran inside the home.&nbsp;

Roads around the area were blocked off by local law enforcement. Local law enforcement on scene included the North Platte Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department as well the Nebraska State Patrol assisting with the situation.

North Platte Standoff ends with suspect in police custody

North Platte, Ne - The NEBRASKAland DAYS Board of Directors gave their highest
honor to a long-time member of the community during Friday night's performance
of the PRCA Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Scott Orr received the award after
dedicating extensive time and resources to not only NEBRASKAland DAYS but other
community organizations as well. “Scott has been a valuable member of our
organization since he joined the Board in 2007,” said Executive Director David
Fudge. “We’re thrilled to be able to recognize him for his contributions.” 

Orr is a North Platte High School graduate and retired
member of our Armed Forces. He moved home from Kansas after his tour to take
over the family business, Orr’s Dry Cleaning. He joined the NEBRASKAland DAYS
Board and was instrumental in completing several projects that improved fan
experience. “I remember Scott always being out here tinkering with something
while he was a member of our Board,” said Fudge. “When Scott commits to
something he never quits thinking about how he can be helpful.” Orr has continued
to volunteer tirelessly since his Board term ended. Orr and his wife Cyndee
will serve as Grand Marshall’s in Saturday’s NEBRASKAland DAYS Parade. 

The Dale Studley Memorial Award is named after one of
NEBRASKAland DAYS Founding Board Members, who worked tirelessly to help get the
Celebration on firm ground in the late 1960’s. It is given annually to someone
who has gone above and beyond in their commitment to the organization

   Governor Pillen Seeks Applicants for NPPD Board 

Columbus, Neb. –&nbsp;The shores of Lake Maloney will be treated for Spiny Naiad, an abrasive plant that has sharp leaves and branches which limits recreational activities, such as swimming, along the shoreline of the lake.

To control the growth of Spiny Naiad along the shores, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) and the Lake Maloney Property Owners Association (LMPOA) have contracted with Aquatic Controls to treat some of the impacted shorelines and bays with an herbicide. Weather permitting, the application will take place on June 17 and will cover most of the residential shorelines and public access areas where Spiny Naiad is growing.

“NPPD and LMPOA have worked closely with the Nebraska Game and Parks to research the best way to control the spread of Spiny Naiad in a way that is safe and effective. Aquatic Controls is experienced in treating Spiny Naiad and will be able to complete the application with minimal impact to activities at the lake, the day of the application,” says NPPD Senior Environmental Specialist Justin King.

The herbicide application will be completed from a boat to treat approximately 40 acres of Lake Maloney’s 1,650 acres of water surface. The lake will remain open for regular use on June 17, however for the safety of the contractor, and to help with efficiency of the application, NPPD asks lake goers to avoid areas where work is being completed.

There will be a Celebration of Jim Salestrom’s life on Friday, June 21, in the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Fine Arts Recital Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. CDT.&nbsp; The presentation is planned to highlight some of Jim’s life, experiences, career, and his music.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doors to the celebration will open at 6:00 p.m.&nbsp;

As written in his obituary, James Kevin Salestrom impacted countless lives throughout his long and successful musical career. To his family he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. He was born February 20, 1956 in Omaha, NE to Virgil and Janice Salestrom. He is survived by his wife Pamela Dailer Salestrom, his daughter Casey, son-in-law Brandon Freeman and son James Salestrom Jr. of Nashville, TN. The true joy of his life was his grandson - Casey and Brandon’s son, Thomas James. Jim also dearly loved his brothers Chuck and Tom Salestrom and their families.

To his fans Jim was a joy to listen to, a world class singer/songwriter and an Emmy winning performer. His love of music started at the early age of 7 when he got his first guitar. As he got older, he started writing songs, and formed several groups in Nebraska with his brother Chuck. The most notable of these was Timberline, which further launched his career.&nbsp;

He played guitar and sang in Dolly Parton’s band over the course of decades. Her shows took him all over the world. Jim also had a close relationship with John Denver and performed with him throughout the years. He shared his love of life and positive spirit through his music. He worked with countless wonderful musicians and performed for 5 U.S. Presidents, and numerous members of the U.S. Supreme Court.

He treated everyone with love and respect. Jim was known for his humor, infectious smile, positive outlook on life and a gift to make everyone feel special. He sang like an angel, and luckily his music will endure long past his lifetime.&nbsp;&nbsp;Amazingly, he was still performing shows three weeks prior to his death&nbsp;

Jim passed away on Wednesday, November 22 surrounded by loved ones at his home in Arvada, CO after a decade-long battle with cancer. He was 67 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jim’s family has planned 3 separate events starting in Kearney on June 21, then Breckenridge CO on June 26, and finally in Big Sky, Montana on August 5th. &nbsp;Memorials are suggested to the&nbsp;Grateful Music&nbsp;Foundation--&nbsp;a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation located at 133B Pheasant Tail Lane in Big Sky, Montana.

The North Platte Community Playhouse announced that it has been awarded a grant of $11,310 by the Nebraska Arts Council.  This grant will support the basic operations of the organization.

North Platte Community Playhouse awarded a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for a 2025 mountain lion hunting season at its June 21 meeting in Ogallala.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Mountain time at the Petrified Wood Gallery, 418 E. 1st&nbsp;St.

For the first time, a hunting season will be proposed for mountain lions in the Wildcat Hills. If approved, a Wildcat Hills Unit will be created, joining the existing Pine Ridge Unit and Niobrara Unit as areas that would allow mountain lion harvest.

The Wildcat Hills Unit would encompass parts of Scotts Bluff, Morrill, Cheyenne, Garden, Kimball, and Banner counties. The objective for the unit is to provide a harvest opportunity for hunters that will keep the lion population resilient while slightly reducing their numbers.

Game and Parks’ genetic surveys in 2023 estimate there are 70 mountain lions in the Pine Ridge, up from the last estimate of 33 in 2021. Surveys that will allow population estimates for the Niobrara and Wildcat Hills are presently being conducted. Twenty-seven mountain lions were documented in the Niobrara Valley during 2023, and 24 were documented in the Wildcat Hills.

Season 1 in all three units would take place Jan. 2, 2025, through the end of February. The season would end immediately in a unit if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were reached. The Pine Ridge limit would be 12 mountain lions with a sub-limit of six females, the Niobrara limit would be four mountain lions with a two female sub-limit, and the Wildcat Hills limit would be three mountain lions with a two female sub-limit.

Up to 960 permits could be issued by lottery in the Pine Ridge Unit, up to 320 permits in the Niobrara Unit, and up to 240 permits in the Wildcat Hills Unit. Permits are available to residents only. An auxiliary season that allows the use of dogs would be March 15 through the end of March if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were not reached during Season 1 in any unit. A number of permits equal to the number of lions remaining in the limit would be issued by lottery to unsuccessful permit holders from that unit who apply for the auxiliary season.

Class II and Class III e-bikes would be permitted as posted.</li>
 </ul>Commissioners also will consider these fishing regulation changes:<ul>
 <li>The removal of the no-live-baitfish restriction will be recommended for Lake Wanahoo.</li><li>At Two Rivers State Recreation Area Lake No. 5, also known as the trout lake, a recommendation would shorten the time a trout tag is required to fish the lake by one month. It also would remove the tag display requirement and allow anglers to release any caught trout.</li>
 </ul>In addition, there will be staff recommendations to:<ul>
 <li>approve the transfer of approximately 88 acres of land in Hall County adjacent to Mormon Island SRA from the Federal Highway Administration to Game and Parks; and</li><li>approve permitting of hunting in some state parks and state historical parks for 2024 seasons.</li>

Danielle graduated from UNL with a Bachelor of Science in animal science with an equine focus. Jaelyn is a graduate of Blue Hill High School and will be attending Doane University in the fall where she will be a member of the dance team. She will be pursuing a major in biology with an emphasis on a Pre-Physician Assistant path. She plans to practice as a Physician Assistant in rural Nebraska in the future. Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2025 will be crowned during the first night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Wednesday night.

North Platte, Ne - March 7 &amp; 8 of 2024 will be one the Kuhlmann family will remember for a long time. The night of March 7 was the evening that the area received a record snow of over 15 inches, 14.6 inches of that came over a 6-hour period, some portions of the area received closer to 20 inches of snow. At the KJ's Boots &amp; Western Wear store at the intersection of I-80 and the Hershey/Dickens road south of Hershey, all the snow that fell caused the business's roof to fail. Connie Kuhlmann (owner) said her husband Kevin had gone to the store on the afternoon of March 8 to clear their parking lot and scoop the walk when he went into the store around 5pm and realized part of the roof had collapsed.

A phone call went out from Kuhlmann at the time to friends and family, to rush to the store and try to get the inventory out of the building before a larger problem developed. Within an hour of the call, a dozen people showed up to help with trailers, moving dollies and manpower. Later a Facebook post for help went out on the local Hershey page, and within 15 minutes much of the community of Hershey came to the aide of the Kuhlmanns.

Nearly 3 months later, KJ's has reopened in North Platte in the old Sun-Mart building, now home to New Life Church, MEGA Gymnastics and CMH Interiors. Plans are still in the air for the old KJ's building in Hershey, but Connie Kuhlmann says "we hope to reopen in Hershey, but in the meantime North Platte has become our new home."

KJ's opened in North Platte on June 1, and is running a 20% off special through June 15th during the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, part of Nebraskaland Days. Store Hours 9m-6pm Monday-Saturday, 1-4pm on Sundays.&nbsp;

So far, over $227,000 has been donated to local nonprofits. The top three nonprofits that are atop of the leaderboards include Ogallala Community Hospital, Keith County Senior Center and St. Luke's Church. The goal for this year is to raise $300,000. Great Plains Health is proud to announce that Dr. Renee Engler has been appointed to the Nebraska Medical Association Political Action Committee (NMPAC) Board. The NMA Board of Directors appointed 12 physicians to the NMPAC Board at its May meeting, highlighting their commitment to active leadership in advocacy efforts.&nbsp;

Dr. Engler has demonstrated dedication and expertise in her field, making her a&nbsp; valuable addition to the NMPAC Board. Her experience includes serving as Chair of the&nbsp; Medical Executive Committee, Emergency Co-Medical Director, Chief of Medical Staff,&nbsp; Vice Chair of the Clinical Integration Network, and Emergency Medicine Resident&nbsp; Coordinator at Great Plains Health. Dr. Engler has been an active member of various&nbsp; committees, including Peer Review, Bylaws, and Credentials. She has educated&nbsp; hundreds of providers as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor throughout the&nbsp; region and received the UNMC Excellence in Educational Service Award in 2023.&nbsp; Additionally, she was a recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award for medical&nbsp; service in 2022.&nbsp;

Dr. Engler expressed her excitement for this new role.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I am honored to join the NMPAC Board and contribute to the advocacy efforts that are&nbsp; vital for both physicians and patients. Together, we can address critical issues such as&nbsp; prior authorization and scope of practice, ensuring our voices are heard at the Capitol. June 10, 2024&nbsp;— As World Blood Donor Day approaches on June 14, the American Red Cross stresses that blood and platelet donors are critically needed right now to combat a drastic shortfall in donations over the last several weeks.&nbsp;Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with type O blood and donors giving platelets.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Record-breaking summer travel and severe weather conditions are expected to persist all season long, which may prevent donors from being able to give. When fewer people donate, less blood is available for hospital patients.&nbsp;Make a blood or platelet donation a priority this summer.
