The Lexington Police Department have identified the 39-year-old as Genaro Martinez-Martinez. Officials say they have worked with Homeland Security but have been unsuccessful in locating any family.&nbsp;

Lexington, Neb. - The Lexington Police Department suspects no foul play in the death of a man who was found lying in an alley last week.&nbsp;

On Thursday, June 13th at 6:15 pm, officers along with Lexington Fire and Rescue were dispatched to an alley downtown to a call of a male subject laying down. When first responders arrived on scene and evaluated the situation, it was determined the suspect was deceased.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department, investigation has revealed that the male subject was a 39-year-old not from the United States and was homeless. He had been in the Lexington area for one - two months. The male has been identified by officials but are withholding his identity pending family notification as they are still searching for any family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Evidence at the scene and an autopsy finding showed the male suffered rear head injuries, presumably from a backwards fall according to officials. No foul play is suspected. The investigation is still on-going.&nbsp;

CHAPPELL, Neb. — The spirit of the Pony Express lives on as modern-day riders, known as the Pony Express Re-Riders, embarked on their annual journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Covering nearly 2000 miles, these dedicated riders are racing against time, aiming to complete the historic route in just 10 days.

Equipped with a GPS device known as a SPOT tracker, securely nestled in the mochila, each rider carries the responsibility of ensuring the timely delivery of the mail. The SPOT tracker sends a signal, or "ping," to a satellite every five minutes, allowing enthusiasts and supporters to monitor their progress in real-time on a larger National Park Service map.

Today, the Pony Express Re-Riders passed through Chappell, a small town bustling with excitement at the sight of these modern-day couriers. Locals and visitors alike gathered at the junction of Hwy 30 and Hwy 385 to witness this historical reenactment firsthand.

"I caught them at the junction and it was an amazing sight," remarked one spectator. "To see them riding through, carrying on this tradition, it's truly inspiring."

From Chappell, the riders continue their journey, making their way towards Bridgeport and onward to Guernsey, Wyoming.&nbsp; Each stage of the ride echoes the resilience and determination that characterized the original Pony Express riders over a century ago.

The annual Pony Express Re-Ride not only honors the legacy of the original Pony Express, which operated from 1860 to 1861, but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of adventure and the importance of communication in shaping the American West.

As the riders press forward, their progress can be tracked on the NPS map, where the Pony Rider Icon moves steadily westward, marking each mile of this remarkable journey across the heart of America.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The transfer of a racing license from Adams County to Keith County faces a delay of at least one month.

Hastings Exposition and Racing presented their proposal to the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission last Tuesday, aiming to relocate their license to Ogallala and collaborate with Elite Casinos to establish Lake Mac Casino, the Casino would also have a quarter horse race track.

However, the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission determined that Hastings Exposition and Racing lacked essential documentation necessary for approval.

One outstanding requirement is evidence of construction feasibility west of the Wal-Mart near the interstate.

Additionally, the commission stipulated that the race track must be constructed and inspected by Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commision officials before any license transfer can be considered.

Hastings Exposition and Racing has until June 28th now to furnish the required information. The commission plans to revisit the matter during its meeting on July 19th.

In a 5-2 vote, commissioners opted to postpone further deliberation until the upcoming session. Should the license transfer be authorized, HER anticipates hosting its inaugural race on Labor Day in 2025.

The Nebraska Legislature has already directed the Nebraska State Racing and Gaming Commission to conduct economic and social impact studies to determine eligible sites for new racetracks, which must be completed no later than January 1, 2025. The Ogallala City Council and Keith County Board of Commissioners provided exclusive support for this project.

Union Pacific announced today that its legendary steam locomotive&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm">Big Boy No. 4014</a>&nbsp;will embark on a second tour this year, with a trip planned this fall in middle America, including Chicago and Houston.

The “Heartland of America Tour” will start Aug. 29 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and include nine additional states: Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. The eight-week tour concludes in late October.

Big Boy will make several whistle-stops in communities along its route and hold display days for the public and Union Pacific employees to enjoy the locomotive:

(Sutherland, Nebraska, June 17, 2024) – The Village of Sutherland Board of Trustees accepted the recommendations of the Economic Development Program’s Citizens Advisory Review Committee and approved $45,085 in grant awards from the Property Improvement Program and a $1,000 award from the Digital Marketing grant program.

The awards include $2,835 for residential sidewalk replacement at 1022 Second Street, $10,000 for tuck pointing at 130 Walnut Street, $10,000 for new windows and doors at 820 First Street, $6,000 for a new front wall at 822 First Street, $10,000 for a new roof, soffit and fascia at 910 First Street,$6,250 for a new driveway at 130 Park Street and $1,000 for digital marketing for Stolen Vault Records.

According to Economic Development Program Administrator Muriel Clark, the commercial buildings at 130 Walnut Street and 910 First Street are significantly more than 100 years old, and those at 820 and 822 First Street will be celebrating their centennial in 1927. “The CARC is pleased to have these historic buildings occupied by young entrepreneurs. The care they are receiving today in this public/private partnership will ensure that they will continue to serve Sutherland for another century.” The award for a new driveway at 130 Park Street assists in the conversion of a derelict residential building into a commercial location for an expanded Sutherland business.

The Property Improvement Program also assists homeowners to replace or repair the public sidewalks at their residences. The award at 1022 Second Street will make a continuous safe and accessible sidewalk on the north side of the 1000 block of Second Street from Spruce to Oak.

The final award, $1,000 for digital marketing for Stolen Vault Records will assist the owner in making the public aware of the services available at the new location in downtown Sutherland.

Since its inception in January of 2023, the Economic Development Program, funded by the LB840 Local Option Sales Tax approved by the voters in May of 2022 has logged nearly $120,000 in receipts. The Board of Trustees approved previous grants in September of 2023 totaling $13,000, bringing the total awards to $59,095.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. – More than 250 kids and their families flooded the cobblestone streets of downtown North Platte to learn about where their food, fiber, and energy&nbsp;come&nbsp;from at the inaugural Agriculture on the Bricks event on June 8.

Hosted by the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm&nbsp;Bureau&nbsp;Foundation and&nbsp;North Platte&nbsp;Public Schools&nbsp;Kids Klub, the event was designed to provide the community with an opportunity to explore the vast world of agriculture. Kids and their families participated in hands-on activities and interacted with farmers and ranchers as they learned how food gets from the&nbsp;farm&nbsp;to their plate.

“Agriculture on the Bricks was a huge success!” said Emily Kammerer,&nbsp;education&nbsp;specialist for the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm&nbsp;Bureau&nbsp;Foundation. “Our goal was to create an accessible, family-friendly event that gave children the chance to explore and learn about our state’s leading industry: agriculture. It was awesome to see families all the way from Ogallala to Kearney come together and celebrate agriculture!”

Kids participated in activities like Cover Crop Monster to explore how farmers protect their soil by planting cover crops as well as an agricultural careers activity where they matched different careers in agriculture to the correct description to receive a prize.

Inaugural Agriculture on the Bricks Event Sparks Conversation About Where Food Comes from in North Platte

Alliance, Neb. - Eagle Media, Panhandle Post and KCOW Radio are excited to welcome Canon Rath as the new “Voice” of the Alliance Bulldogs. Rath currently serves as a News Director for Eagle Media and works throughout the Nebraska Markets for North Platte Post, Sandhills Post and Panhandle Post. He will maintain his current position with this new expanded role.

Last season, Rath called games for our sister market, Sandhills Post, calling local area games of the week on Flatrock 100.7. His duties included doing play-by-play for football and basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are thrilled to have Canon expand his role at Eagle, becoming an integral part of our team in Alliance and Chadron,” said Olivia Hasenauer, Nebraska Regional Manager. “With his extensive experience in play-by-play coverage and his deep knowledge of the teams and players in Western Nebraska, Canon is the perfect fit. His grandpa, has&nbsp;ties in the Bayard area&nbsp;further enhance this seamless transition.”&nbsp;

Rath has over eight years of sports broadcasting experience and six years of radio broadcasting. Throughout his career, he has called games at the high school and collegiate level. Canon also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to call the 2020 Class D2 Football State Championship between Dundy County Stratton and Burwell for Nebraska Public Media (formerly known as NET).&nbsp;

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to become the new “Voice” of the Alliance Bulldogs and getting to know the coaches, student-athletes and community starting this fall,” said Rath. “I can’t wait to get to work and bring Bulldog athletics on KCOW radio!”&nbsp;

KCOW Radio and Panhandle Post&nbsp;are excited for this next chapter and looking to be the premier provider of coverage for the Panhandle Region.&nbsp;

Rath graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in May 2023 as a dual major in Sports Communication and Sports Management. During his 5-year tenure as a Loper, he was heavily involved with the student run radio station 91.1 KLPR, where he hosted a weekly sport show, hosted a weekly sports update and did play-by-play/color for Loper Athletics. 

He spent four years on the KLPR Sports Staff and was Sports Director for his last three years of college. He has been nominated many times at the national level for his work for Loper Athletic broadcast, his weekly sports update “Loper Update” and the longest student running show “Throwin Lopes” where he created it with fellow student Grant Tighe in 2020.&nbsp;

Rath got his start in broadcasting when he was a Junior at Kearney High School when he joined the Bearcat Sports Network, which is Kearney High School’s Striv program. Canon got his start in radio his freshman year in college when he joined Platte River Radio as a board op and producer. He would regularly produce the Doug and Daddy Show, studio engineering many sporting events, and more. Rath also hosted the "Rutts and Rivals Scoreboard Show" for two years. After a 2-year stint, Canon would join KRGI as a color analyst announcer for the St. Paul Wildcats football team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rath just recently celebrated one year with Eagle Media earlier this month. He has done work for Panhandle Post along with Sandhills Post and North Platte Post. During his free time, Rath enjoys playing golf with his grandpa, going on walks, playing pickleball and playing video games. Eagle Media, KCOW Radio welcomes Canon Rath as the next “Voice” of the Alliance Bulldogs

LINCOLN, NEB. – Securing the next Farm Bill is essential for creating a sustainable future for agriculture and is at the forefront of producers’ minds across the country. Movement on the Farm Bill was one of the key messages Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Committee members shared with the Nebraska congressional delegation during their annual fly-in to Washington, D.C.

Enhancing federal crop insurance remains a top priority for NEFB members and ensuring that it is not tied to climate focused practices is crucial for the long-term success of operations and the integrity of the program. NEFB commends the House Agriculture Committee for passing a bipartisan bill out of committee, but YF&amp;R members called for both the full House and the Senate to take up the legislation.

“Having the Farm Bill pass out of the House Ag Committee is a huge step in the right direction,” said Daniel Hasart, YF&amp;R committee member and cattle rancher from Cherry County. “It is important that the Farm Bill includes a legislative fix to California’s Proposition 12 and Massachusetts's Question 3 to ensure that one state or locality cannot control how we produce livestock and meat products for the rest of the country and world.

As domestic workforce availability continues to be a challenge, the H-2A program became increasingly essential in agriculture. Just under 4,000 H-2A positions were used in Nebraska alone in FY2023, however, this growth does not convey how needlessly complex and expensive the program has become. Between six straight years of exponential wage growth, agency regulation overreach, and persistent congressional inaction, many agriculture operations- including many small and medium sized operations- are struggling to operate through the program.

“We need Congress to pass legislation that pauses the Adverse Effect Wage Rate for the H-2A program at 2023 levels,” said Grant Jones, a YF&amp;R committee member, row crop farmer, and cattle rancher from Chase County. “Supporting the Farm Operations Act and freezing the wage rate will allow farmers and ranchers to pay their employees without risking financial upset of their operation.”

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) allowed reduced tax rates for many farm and ranch businesses. The law, which includes many important tax provisions, is set to expire in 2025 which would drastically increase taxes if let lapse.

“Not extending the TCJA would be detrimental to my operation,” said Courtney Nelson, Madison County YF&amp;R Committee member and row crop farmer. “From unpredictable markets to weather disasters, agriculture operates in a world of uncertainty. We need a tax code that provides certainty and will allow me to continue to operate and grow my farm and ranch.”

The YF&amp;R committee connects young farmers and ranchers from across Nebraska to develop their leadership skills, engage with their peers, advocate for policy, and serve as the next generation of agricultural leaders.

“When young producers sit across the table from their senators and congressmen, they are reminding policymakers that agriculture is thriving, innovative, and sustainable for generations to come,” said Audrey Schipporeit, director of generational engagement at NEFB. “Amplifying young producer voices encourages more young people to advocate for the future of agriculture.”

In addition to meeting with all five of Nebraska’s congressional delegates, the group also met with officials from the House Agriculture Committee, the EPA, Chief Economist with USDA, and the Chief Economist for the Senate Ag Committee.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Advocate for Action on the Farm Bill in DC

(LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;—&nbsp;Thirteen new Nebraska State Troopers are ready to hit the road in service to the people of Nebraska. Members of the Nebraska State Patrol’s 69th&nbsp;Basic Recruit Class received their badges and were sworn-in today during a ceremony at the State Capitol in Lincoln.

“Your public service starts today,” Colonel John Bolduc told the new troopers during today’s ceremony. “You are dedicated to serving others. That means putting others ahead of yourselves. It may even mean putting yourself in harm’s way in service to others. Thank you for being willing to do just that.”

The 13 members of Camp 69 come to NSP from communities across Nebraska, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. The newly sworn-in troopers have completed 22 weeks of intense training, including extensive live-action training scenarios and rigorous academic instruction. Their training now continues in the field, pairing with veteran troopers in the field training process.

Outstanding performance in several areas of training was recognized with awards during the graduation ceremony. Recruit Garrett Swantek, of Genoa, received the Superintendent’s Leadership Award. Recruit Tomas Margritz, of Lexington, was honored with the D.R. Shearer Marksmanship Award. The O.H. Witt Academic Achievement Award was presented to Recruit Ryan Clark, of Kearney. Recruit Carissa Moore, of Crete, was awarded the Captain Mark Williams Core Values Award. Recruit Bryce Smidt, of Rockwell City, Iowa, was honored with the R. J. Buchholz Physical Fitness Award.

Governor Jim Pillen and Attorney General Mike Hilgers provided remarks during today’s graduation ceremony, which was held in the rotunda of the Nebraska State Capitol. Secretary of State Bob Evnen administered the oath of office.

“You’ve been through extraordinary challenges. You’ve overcome more than you probably thought you could 24 weeks ago,” said Governor Pillen. “I simply can’t say thank you enough. We are incredibly proud of you. You are answering the most noble calling of public service, taking care of the brothers and sisters of this great state.”

Members of the Nebraska State Patrol’s 69th&nbsp;Basic Recruit Class received their badges and were sworn-in today during a ceremony at the State Capitol in Lincoln.“Your public service starts today,” Colonel John Bolduc told the new troopers during today’s ceremony. “You are dedicated to serving others. That means putting others ahead of yourselves. It may even mean putting yourself in harm’s way in service to others. Thank you for being willing to do just that.”The 13 members of Camp 69 come to NSP from communities across Nebraska, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. The newly sworn-in troopers have completed 22 weeks of intense training, including extensive live-action training scenarios and rigorous academic instruction. Their training now continues in the field, pairing with veteran troopers in the field training process.Outstanding performance in several areas of training was recognized with awards during the graduation ceremony. Recruit Garrett Swantek, of Genoa, received the Superintendent’s Leadership Award. Recruit Tomas Margritz, of Lexington, was honored with the D.R. Shearer Marksmanship Award. The O.H. Witt Academic Achievement Award was presented to Recruit Ryan Clark, of Kearney. Recruit Carissa Moore, of Crete, was awarded the Captain Mark Williams Core Values Award. Recruit Bryce Smidt, of Rockwell City, Iowa, was honored with the R. J. Buchholz Physical Fitness Award.Governor Jim Pillen and Attorney General Mike Hilgers provided remarks during today’s graduation ceremony, which was held in the rotunda of the Nebraska State Capitol. North Platte, Neb. – Great Plains Family Medicine has successfully launched&nbsp; an initiative to improve the nursing home patient experience by bringing providers and nursing&nbsp; staff directly to the facilities. This pilot project, which ran from April 16 to May 31, 2024, aimed&nbsp; to enhance patient care, reduce hospital readmissions, and foster stronger relationships&nbsp;&nbsp;

between healthcare providers and nursing homes.&nbsp;

The initiative began with provider meetings to set clear goals and vision for the project. After&nbsp; reaching out to local nursing homes, the response was overwhelmingly positive.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We were welcomed with open arms," said Megan Moore, Clinic Manager. "The enthusiasm&nbsp; from the nursing homes was incredible, and it set a positive tone for the entire project."&nbsp;

Key actions included creating and sharing SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment,&nbsp; Recommendation) forms with nursing home staff to ensure timely provider communication,&nbsp; training Patient Access Technicians (PATs) on appropriate scheduling, and coordinating with&nbsp; the hospitalist group on discharge procedures.&nbsp;

"We aimed to provide timely patient visits in their own environment, which not only improved&nbsp; the quality of care but also reduced the need for patient transportation, by the nursing homes."&nbsp; Moore explained. "The real-time communication and updates significantly enhanced the&nbsp; continuity of care."&nbsp;

Patients at Centennial Park, North Platte Care Center (NPCC), Linden Court, Linden Estates,&nbsp; Sutherland, and Premier Estates benefited from daily visits by Amanda Kramer, PA-C, and&nbsp; Medical Assistant Keri Allen, with coverage extending across the week. Notable achievements&nbsp; of the six-week pilot program include:&nbsp;

• Only one hospital readmission during the six-week pilot, which was recommended by&nbsp; provider during patient visit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

• Prevention of two ER transfers/potential admissions.

• Reduction in overnight and weekend calls from nursing homes.&nbsp;

• Enhanced satisfaction among providers and nursing homes due to streamlined&nbsp; administrative processes.&nbsp;

• Improved communication with primary care physicians (PCPs) during each visit,&nbsp; enhancing care quality and continuity.&nbsp;

• Strengthening of the relationship between Great Plains Family Medicine and local&nbsp; nursing homes.&nbsp;

"We are thrilled with the outcomes of this pilot," said Misti Hutchinson, Chief Provider Network&nbsp; Officer. "The decrease in hospital readmissions and ER transfers is a testament to the&nbsp; effectiveness of our approach. Providers also appreciated the reduced administrative burden,&nbsp; allowing them to focus more on patient care."&nbsp;

Building on the success of the pilot project, Great Plains Family Medicine has ambitious plans&nbsp; for the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Our goal is to hire a full-time nursing home team to continue this important work," Moore&nbsp; shared. "We also plan to expand the project and implement it on a wider scale."&nbsp;

“This initiative has demonstrated the significant benefits of delivering healthcare directly to&nbsp; patients in nursing homes," said Hutchinson.
