The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) will be traveling across Nebraska&nbsp;this summer&nbsp;to discuss with providers the impact of $25.5 million in American Rescue&nbsp;Plan&nbsp;Act (ARPA) funds on behavioral health care in the state.

At the request of the Nebraska Legislature, BHECN distributed the funds in 2023 to address the state’s behavioral health workforce shortage and behavioral health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

BHECN, housed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), used a comprehensive application and review process to allocate the funds to more than 100 projects around the state to help address key behavioral issues on various fronts.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unmc.edu/bhecn/arpa/awardees.html" target="_blank">See a full list of BHECN-ARPA Awardees here</a>.

This summer’s trips will unite recipients through a series of statewide gatherings, where they can share project progress, explore avenues for additional support from BHECN, exchange best practices, and foster stronger networks.

“The BHECN-ARPA project presents a uniquely powerful opportunity to address enduring behavioral health workforce challenges, especially those compounded by the pandemic,” said Marley Doyle, MD, director of BHECN. “We eagerly anticipate engaging with Nebraska’s outstanding organizations in person, witnessing their groundbreaking efforts, which are poised to improve the lives of so many Nebraskans.”

Jessie Buche, director of the ARPA Awards Program, added, "BHECN is particularly enthusiastic about showcasing the remarkable achievements of BHECN-ARPA awardees in the inaugural year of their projects."

The BHECN-ARPA awardee gatherings will be held:

Tuesday, June 11&nbsp;– 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at the University of Nebraska&nbsp;at&nbsp;Kearney’s Ockinga Seminar Center.&nbsp;

Tuesday, June 18&nbsp;–&nbsp;9 a.m. to 1 p.m. MDT at Chadron State College&nbsp;in the student center’s Scottsbluff Room.

Tuesday, Aug. 6&nbsp;– 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Wayne State College.&nbsp;﻿&nbsp;

Wednesday, Aug. 7&nbsp;– 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at UNMC.&nbsp;

Media are invited to attend the events. (Best time may be from 10:10-11:30 a.m.; a BHECN awardee will present and then awardees will meet to discuss successes and challenges.)

The Vacation Bible School committee at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is on a mission to help save lives by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive! Through the Red Cross Community Club Program, our club members, their families and friends have the chance to give hope to hospital patients.

Red Cross blood drive scheduled for June 14 in North Platte

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;Recent Western Nebraska Community College graduate Jordon Underwood of Oshkosh was named a Distinguished Chapter Member by Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

The awarded members are selected based on a student's embodiment of the Hallmarks of the Society through active participation in their chapter. It is awarded to students with exceptional leadership, scholarship service, and fellowship with their chapter and community. Only 30 students are recognized nationwide.

"It&nbsp;was a great honor I got the ability to receive a medallion for this award," Underwood said. "I was really thankful for friends, family, professors, and the PTK organization for this award."

In addition, he was also the recipient of the Board of Governors Award at the WNCC Student Award Ceremony in late April. This is the highest award conferred by WNCC, given to an outstanding graduating sophomore who best exemplifies the qualities of excellence in academics, leadership, and service to the college and the community.

During his time at WNCC and through his college project through PTK, Underwood spoke with students from area high schools about his experiences and the role that WNCC specifically played in his education.

"PTK and WNCC have made a big difference in my life," Underwood said. "I got the ability to meet new people and develop friendships that will last forever."

Underwood received his associates degree in May and plans to continue his education next fall at Chadron State College to pursue a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

For more than 90 years, Western Nebraska Community College has been educating residents of Nebraska's Panhandle. With campus locations in Alliance, Scottsbluff, and Sidney, WNCC offers educational, training, and growth opportunities for students, partners, and community members throughout its 12-½ county service area.

Dundy County Sheriff's Office Monthly Report - April 2024

Lexington, Neb. - A Lexington woman has been arrested for motor vehicle homicide after striking her partner early Sunday morning.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department, officers responded to a traffic accident around 4:30am Sunday morning involving a pedestrian that was hit. The pedestrian was identified as 38-year-old Yuniesky Diaz Gomez, who was transported to Lexington Regional Hospital, with life threating injuries. Diaz Gomez succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital.&nbsp;

The driver was identified as 42-year-old Vilma Almanza Siles, who officials say was in a relationship with Diaz Gomes. Witnesses reported to officers that an argument was taking place between the two upon arrival home. Almanza Siles was attempting to leave the property when Diaz Gomez stepped in front of the vehicle to prevent her from leaving and was struck by the vehicle.&nbsp;

Almanza Siles has been arrested and is charged with Driving Under the Influence and Motor Vehicle Homicide.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy has been scheduled for later today.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The Mid-Plains United Way is looking for teams to compete during its first ever tractor pull event on June 18th. Deadline to register is June 7th. The united way is also nearing the end of its campaign goal and is shy of their current goal.&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - Nebraska's official state celebration doesn't technically begin until next Tuesday, June 11 when the annual Buffalo Bill Rodeo Golf Classic kicks off the celebration at Rivers Edge Golf Course, but many unofficial events begin this week.&nbsp;

The Prairie Arts Center in North Platte kicks off their month long Competitive Art Show on Tuesday, June 4. 

The Miss Nebraska Scolarship Competition begins on Wednesday, June 5 with a Red Carpet Welcome Ceremony at Venue 304: Doors Open at 6:30, Delegates will arrive at 7:00pm. Red Carpet Attire– Open to the Public. Miss Nebraska events will continue on Thursday, Friday and conclude with the crowning of the new Miss Nebraska and Miss Teen Nebraska on Saturday evening at North Platte High School.&nbsp;

On Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 enjoy the Lincoln County Historical Museums annual Heritage Festival. (Schedule Below)

Miss Rodeo Nebraska kicks off on the heals of the Miss Nebraska competition on Sunday, June 9th with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Horsemanship and BBQ at the Wild West Arena, beginning Sunday at 10:30am. Event is free to the public. Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska continues on Monday, June 10 with speech competition.

Nebraskaland Days just 9 days away from official start, but unofficial events begin this week

North Platte, Ne - The weather stayed south of North Platte Saturday night and the crowd was treated to a great night of races at the Lincoln County Raceway. The next racing in North Platte will be on June 28 with the Sandhills Shootout Summer Nationals when URSS Sprint Cars &amp; RMMRA Midgets and Dwarfs along with the local divistions will all put on a show on the Lincoln County Raceway dirt.
