North Platte, NE – Families 1st Partnership is proud to host a community celebration welcoming the Pony Express Riders during their annual Ride Across Nebraska, with a stop scheduled at Cody Park in North Platte on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. The public is warmly invited to attend and take part in this meaningful event.

The Pony Express Ride will also make stops in the area in Gothenburg, Ogallala and Sidney.

Now in its 18th year, the Pony Express Ride Across Nebraska is a statewide effort that raises awareness and advocates for increased funding for mental health programs through the Nebraska Legislature. Each year, a dedicated group of motorcycle riders departs from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, traveling along the I-80 corridor and stopping in communities along the way to collect letters of support written by local residents.

These letters, which call for stronger investment in mental health services, are gathered during community events hosted by local family support organizations. The ride culminates on Saturday, May 17th, at the State Capitol in Lincoln, where the letters are delivered directly to members of the Nebraska Unicameral.

The North Platte stop will feature an opportunity to meet the Pony Express Riders, sign letters of support, and participate in raising awareness about the importance of mental health. Lexington, Neb. — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in rural Dawson County that has left four members of a family dead in what appears to be a murder-suicide.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. Saturday, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at a home located in the Plum Creek Canyon #1 area of Johnson Lake. Upon arrival, deputies discovered four deceased individuals inside the residence, all identified as members of the same family: Jeremy Koch, 42; his wife, Bailey Koch, 41; and their two sons, Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16.

Preliminary findings suggest that Jeremy Koch fatally stabbed his wife and sons before taking his own life. A knife believed to have been used in the killings was recovered at the scene.

The two-day course will help 14- and 15-year-olds earn certification through the National Safe&nbsp; Tractor and Machinery Operation Program that grants an exemption to the federal law that&nbsp; prohibits youth under 16 years of age from using certain equipment unless their parents or legal&nbsp; guardians own the farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Certification is earned by completing the two-day course, which includes a written test and a&nbsp; driving exam.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Teens aged 14 or 15 who work on farms, or others interested in learning about safe farming&nbsp; practices, are encouraged to register for the course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The cost of registration for the course is $60 and includes educational materials, supplies, lunch,&nbsp; and the online learning link for those who live 50 miles or more from the location.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Youth under the age of 14 are welcome to attend Day 1 of the course if accompanied by an adult&nbsp; but are not allowed to drive equipment, attend Day 2, or become certified.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OGALLALA, Neb. (May 9, 2025)&nbsp;— As spring continues to unfold across western Nebraska, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to Lake McConaughy—Nebraska’s largest reservoir—for prime fishing, camping, and early-season recreation.&nbsp;

Post-spawn activity has shifted walleye into deeper water, but according to recent reports, anglers are still having success. Smallmouth bass activity has been particularly strong, with excellent results recorded at two recent fishing tournaments.&nbsp;

Water conditions remain favorable heading into mid-May. The current water level at Lake McConaughy sits at 3,239.2 feet elevation, equating to 1,069,200 acre-feet, or roughly 61.3% of the reservoir’s total capacity.&nbsp;

Shower houses are now in service at several major recreation areas, including Cedar View, Arthur Bay, and Lake Ogallala. Additional facilities at Lone Eagle, Little Thunder, and Martin Bay are expected to open soon, pending water quality test results.&nbsp;

All fish cleaning stations around the lake are open for use, and docks have been installed at multiple ramps including Diver’s Bay, Martin Bay (low water), Lemoyne, Cedar View, and both north and south ramps at Lake Ogallala.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds campers that&nbsp;reservation season begins May 20, and&nbsp;advance reservations are required&nbsp;for overnight stays at Lake McConaughy throughout the summer. Reservations can be made online at&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/">OutdoorNebraska.gov</a>.&nbsp;

A temporary&nbsp;campfire ban&nbsp;remains in effect for Nebraska state recreation areas in central and western parts of the state—including Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala—through&nbsp;May 10&nbsp;due to fire safety concerns.&nbsp;

The most recent water temperature reading at the dam was&nbsp;50 degrees Fahrenheit, signaling that peak fishing conditions are just around the corner.&nbsp;

Mid-Plains Community College Holds Commencement Ceremonies Today

OGALLALA, Neb. — A high-speed chase that began in Ogallala and spanned multiple counties has led to a federal prison sentence for a 20-year-old man from El Salvador. Michael Alexander Ayala-Ramirez was sentenced Wednesday to 70 months in prison for illegally possessing firearms, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Molsen.

The case unfolded last July 6, when an Ogallala police officer spotted a stolen pickup truck tied to a vehicle theft at Denver International Airport. When the officer attempted to make contact, Ayala-Ramirez — the driver — fled, sparking a high-speed chase that tore through Keith and Deuel Counties.

The chase ended near a rural farmyard in Deuel County after law enforcement successfully used stop sticks. Ayala-Ramirez and a passenger, Pablo Escobar-Alas, briefly hid under a vehicle before stealing another pickup and leading officers on a second chase. Authorities eventually stopped that vehicle as well and arrested both men.

Inside the bags they carried were four firearms, including one that had been reported stolen. A third suspect, Selvin Escobar-Rivera, fled on foot and was later arrested with another stolen handgun.

All three men had previously been deported and were in the U.S. illegally. The cases against Escobar-Alas and Escobar-Rivera are still pending.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College is proud to announce the addition of Driver's Education courses in Sidney this summer.

The Driver's Ed course is for students ages 14-17. Students must have a valid learner's permit. The first course is scheduled for June 2-6 at the WNCC Sidney Campus. A second course is scheduled for July 7-11. The cost for the course is $200.

WNCC has secured a $10,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Labor to provide tuition for 50 students who qualify based on household income.

Recent data from the Nebraska Department of Transportation highlighted trends for Western Nebraska and the need to expand the availability of driver's education.

"The state average for teens that take driver's education is 50%. In the Panhandle the rate is 20%," WNCC Workforce Training Director Doug Mader said. "More concerning is data that shows two of the worst counties for teen driver and passenger involved crash rates are here in western Nebraska. Working with NDOT and Panhandle Public Health District, our goal is to make a positive impact on safe driving outcomes for our region."

WNCC launching Driver's Education course in Sidney

North Platte, Ne - Over 300 kindergarten students across North Platte learned life-saving lessons this week through a visit from Josh the Otter, a nationally recognized water safety program.&nbsp;

Josh the Otter made a special appearance at McDonald Elementary School on Thursday, teaching young children about the importance of floating and other key water safety tips. The program is designed to educate children on how to stay safe around water and prevent drownings.&nbsp;

Josh the Otter was created by the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation (JCMF) in memory of Joshua Collingsworth, who tragically drowned in 2008. Since then, his parents have dedicated themselves to preventing similar accidents by promoting water safety education across the country.&nbsp;

The North Platte Noon Rotary Club has partnered with JCMF since 2012 to bring this important message to local students. “Between Monday and Friday, we will have reached all 300 kindergartners in North Platte’s 11 elementary schools,” said Noah Harvey, chair of the local Josh the Otter program. Participating schools include all North Platte Public Schools, McDaid Elementary, and Our Redeemer Lutheran School.&nbsp;

Each student received a Josh the Otter book and had the opportunity to interact with Josh, reinforcing the program's message in a fun and memorable way.&nbsp;

JCMF’s work has earned national recognition, including the 2012 Community Lifesaving Award from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and a Regional Award from the National Water Safety Congress. Their partnership with Rotary International has helped expand the program’s reach, spreading awareness and potentially saving lives across the United States.&nbsp;

Lexington, Neb - At its May meeting, the Dawson Public Power District Board of Directors reviewed the district’s current bond debt and discussed preparations for the upcoming irrigation season.

The board examined bonds issued between 2016 and 2020, which carry interest rates ranging from 0.75% to 3.5%. These bonds have been instrumental in financing major infrastructure improvements. The board is also considering issuing a new bond to support future construction projects.

“The district’s history with bonding reflects sound business practices,” said new General Manager Alyssa Clemsen Roberts. “These strategies have helped maintain affordable rates while ensuring system reliability for our customers.”

As irrigation season approaches, the board voted to continue using the same load management control goal established in 2024.

Dawson County Sheriff Mark Montgomery requested the district donate labor costs to install a power line for a new law enforcement training center near Johnson Lake. The board approved a resolution to waive up to $10,000 in labor expenses. Any remaining construction costs will be billed to the sheriff’s department.

The board entered executive session to review a proposed wholesale power contract.

Final totals, which will include in-person giving, are expected in the coming days, but organizers are already calling the event a major success.

Now in its tenth year, North Platte Giving Day is hosted by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation and encourages residents to support a wide range of local causes — from the arts and education to healthcare and social services.

“We’re thrilled with the response,” said Eric Seacrest, Executive Director of the Foundation. “This event continues to show how much people care about their community and the organizations doing important work here.”

Participants had the chance to win part of over $100,000 in matching funds and cash prizes, which incentivized giving throughout the day. While exact figures will be released soon, early results show a strong uptick in engagement from donors across the county.

&nbsp;Lincoln, Neb. —&nbsp;The University of Nebraska has announced two new leadership appointments at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.Kelly Bruns, current director of the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte, has been named interim dean of NCTA and Interim director of partnership engagement in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.Joining him in leadership is Jennifer McConville, who has been reappointed as NCTA associate dean of academic innovation, learner success, and career pathways. 

McConville will also hold an interim courtesy appointment in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where she will work to leverage partnership opportunities between NCTA and CASNR.“These appointments represent a key step in realizing a shared vision for agricultural workforce education in Nebraska,” said Mike Boehm, University of Nebraska vice president and Harlan Vice Chancellor for UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. “Dr. Bruns is a trusted leader with a deep understanding of Nebraska’s ag ecosystem. Dr. McConville brings vision, experience, and energy to expanding innovative, student-centered experiential learning.

The leadership transition comes as Dean Larry Gossen prepares to retire in June 2025. Since 2020, Gossen has led NCTA through a period campus revitalization and commitment to workforce development. Under his leadership, the college completed major infrastructure repairs, deepened community ties, and expanded continuing education—highlighted by the launch of a USDA-funded meat processing curriculum and a $6 million gift to renovate NCTA’s historic barn into a student success and activity center.Bruns has served as director of WCREEC since 2016 and is nationally recognized for his expertise in beef cattle management. He taught for 20 years at the college level before joining UNL in 2014. 

Interim leadership for WCREEC will be announced soon.These leadership appointments support a broader strategic realignment between NCTA and CASNR announced in late 2024. North Platte Giving Day - Lincoln County 4H looking to buy Agriculture Kits for educators (Podcast)

North Platte, Neb. — May 7, 2025 — Today marks the 10th annual North Platte Giving Day, and 78 Lincoln County nonprofits are hoping residents will once again step up to show their generosity. Organized by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, the one-day fundraising event has already raised several million dollars for local organizations since its inception a decade ago.

“We have organizations from Brady to Sutherland, all over Lincoln County that participate in North Platte Giving Day,” said Eric Seacrest, Executive Director of the Foundation. “It’s a great way for people to support causes they care about, especially with the incentives we’ve built into the day.”

This year, 55 cash prizes, ranging from $200 to $1,000, are being awarded to participating nonprofits. Some prizes are based on the number of individual donations, not just the dollar amount, while others are selected at random. A few prizes were handed out during early giving, but the bulk are still up for grabs throughout the day.

Adding to the excitement is over $100,000 in pledged matching funds, which will be applied to qualifying donations. “A one-to-one match can really stretch a donor’s impact,” said Seacrest. “Some nonprofits have quite a bit pledged, others less so, but every dollar helps.”

Seacrest said the event reflects the mission of the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation: “to help people do what they want to do” to make their community stronger. “Hopefully people love their community and want to help somebody fund different projects,” he added.

Donations are tax-deductible through the Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Contributions can be made online at <a href="https://www.northplattegiving.org/leaderboards">NorthPlatteGiving.org</a>, or by dropping off checks at several locations across North Platte, including Orr’s Cleaners, the Catholic School Endowment, Prairie Arts Center, U-Save Pharmacy, and the Foundation’s office downtown.

North Platte Giving Day underway, see leaderboard

LINCOLN, NE — May 7, 2025 — Governor Jim Pillen has announced a new round of appointments to various Nebraska state boards and commissions, made between December 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Among those selected are several individuals from western Nebraska, who will bring local representation to key state entities.

Edward Dunn of Grant has been appointed to the Nebraska Aeronautics Commission, where he will help oversee the state’s aviation policies and infrastructure development.

Sidney resident Steve Mattoon has been named to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates the exploration and production of oil and natural gas to ensure responsible resource development and environmental protection.

David Fudge of North Platte will join the Nebraska Tourism Commission, contributing to statewide efforts to promote tourism, boost local economies, and highlight Nebraska’s cultural and natural attractions.

Governor Pillen expressed confidence in the appointees, noting their professional experience and dedication to their communities.

“These individuals bring strong leadership and local insight to the table,” Pillen said. “Their service on these boards will help ensure Nebraska continues to grow, innovate, and represent the interests of all regions.”

LINCOLN, NE — May 7, 2025 — Governor Jim Pillen has announced a new round of appointments to various Nebraska state boards and commissions, made between December 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025. North Platte, NE — As National Tourism Week kicks off across the country, North Platte is taking the opportunity to shine a light on the people and businesses that make the local tourism industry thrive. Visit North Platte, the city’s tourism bureau, will host its annual Excellence in Tourism Luncheon on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Venue 304, celebrating outstanding service and the vital economic role tourism plays in Lincoln County.

Lisa Burke, Executive Director of Visit North Platte, spoke with The POST this week about the importance of tourism and the recent findings of a comprehensive economic impact study. The results, which reflect tourism activity in 2023, underscore the industry’s massive contribution to the local economy.

According to Burke, tourism generated $121 million in Lincoln County that year alone. “Every other year we have a group that does a study for us—an economic impact study—and the last one was for the year of 2023,” she said. “They told us that $121 million is generated in Lincoln County due to tourism spending. It's also tied to 1,530 jobs, and those jobs bring in an income of $34 million. So tourism has a big impact on Lincoln County and everything that we do.”

But that’s not all. The study revealed that tourism contributes $10 million in tax revenue, reducing the tax burden for local residents. “I know nobody likes to talk about taxes,” Burke said with a smile. “But if there was no tourism in Lincoln County, the average household would have to pay an extra $735 a year to counteract the taxes generated from local tourism.”

In 2023, nearly 600,000 visitors explored North Platte and surrounding areas. The average traveling party consisted of 2.3 people, stayed two nights, and spent an average of $381 per day—a testament to the strength of the region’s hospitality, attractions, and small businesses.

To recognize the people behind those experiences, Visit North Platte will present five ‘Excellence in Customer Service’ awards at Wednesday’s luncheon. The categories include:

In addition, special honors will be given for Volunteer of the Year and the Hero of Tourism, acknowledging those who go above and beyond to make North Platte a welcoming and memorable destination.

“This is our chance to say thank you to the people who work hard every day to create positive experiences for visitors,” Burke said. “Tourism isn’t just about dollars—it’s about community pride, hospitality, and the stories we share with the world.”

The Excellence in Tourism Luncheon is open to the public, and Visit North Platte encourages locals to attend and show support for the individuals and organizations driving the region’s tourism success.

Tourism in the Spotlight: North Platte to Celebrate Industry's Impact During National Tourism Week (PODCAST)

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council is set to consider a range of infrastructure and land use proposals at its meeting Tuesday, May 6, including a new vacant property registration ordinance, several paving district formations, and multiple annexations.

The council will hold a first reading of Ordinance No. 4211, which would add Sections 150.200 through 150.207 to the city code, requiring the registration of vacant properties. The move is intended to help monitor and manage abandoned or unused buildings in North Platte, potentially reducing safety hazards and blight.

In addition to that ordinance, the council will also consider an enabling resolution for the city to participate in the Nebraska Public Agency Investment Trust, a cooperative investment program for public agencies in the state.

Infrastructure improvements will take center stage with second readings of three proposed paving districts—Nos. 839, 840, and 841—on various stretches of Francis Street. The council will also conduct the first reading of Ordinance No. 4208 to create Paving District No. 842, extending from Bryan Avenue to Devco Avenue.

Ordinance No. 4207, which would vacate an alley between East 2nd and East 3rd Streets while retaining it as an access and utility easement, will also receive a second reading and possible action.

Four annexation ordinances—Nos. 4195 through 4198—will undergo third readings. If approved, the city will expand its corporate limits to include the Otter and Glennfield subdivisions, as well as the Majors 3 Brothers Administrative Subdivision.

During the public hearing portion of the meeting, the council will review a rezoning request at 3001 West 9th Street, shifting the designation from a B-2 Highway Commercial District to an R-3 Dwelling District. Another major land use decision involves rezoning parts of 2401 East Philip Avenue, with proposed changes from agricultural and industrial classifications to residential and mobile home park designations.

In tandem with those changes, the council will consider amending the city's 2011 Comprehensive Plan Future Land Use Map and vote on preliminary and final approval of the Newberry Village Subdivision, also located at 2401 East Philip Avenue.

The meeting will conclude with two discussion items: the potential sale of various city-owned industrial lots near Prospect Drive and Prospect Lane, and enforcement of street tree height trimming regulations.
