North Platte, Neb. - The Platte River Boots N' Music Festival at Pals kicks off Thursday, May 30th and runs until Saturday, June 1st. The three-day music festival will offer many artists, vendors and more. 12 bands will play over three days featuring local and out of state talent.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON ­--&nbsp;FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm and straight-line winds from April 6-7, 2024.

Public Assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis&nbsp;for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by&nbsp;a severe winter storm and straight-line winds in Banner,&nbsp;Cheyenne, Dawes, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff&nbsp;and Sioux counties.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Approves Major Disaster Declaration for Nebraska

Kimball, Neb. - Officials say that two were transported to a local hospital following a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Sunday, May 26th.

According to officials, the accident occurred when a car hauler and a United States Postal Service truck collided. Two individuals were transported to the hospital.

Kimball County Sheriff's Office says they were assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Pine Bluffs EMS, Kimball EMS, Bushnell Fire and Laramie County Fire.

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– For the second time this month, Governor Jim Pillen has received approval of a federal disaster declaration. The latest is for funding to assist with clean up and repairs resulting from a severe winter storm that hit the Panhandle in early April.

The counties covered include Banner, Cheyenne, Dawes, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff and Sioux. Conditions on April 6-7 included thunderstorms, freezing rain, snow and strong straight-line winds. At least $10.5 million in initial damage was reported, mainly for downed power lines and power poles.

Federal funding is available to the state, tribal and local governments as well as certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for the emergency work and repair or replacement of facilities damaged in the storm.

Additional designations may be made later if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

North Platte, Neb. - North Platte's newest food and arcade officially opened its doors on Monday. The food establishment held its grand opening on Monday. On Wednesday, May 22nd, Pizza Ranch held its ribbon cutting. The establishment held private soft openings on Wednesday and Thursday of last week to help train staff

The Hot Sheets: May 28th, 2024

North Platte, Ne - North Platte is a special place for PRCA rodeo clown Justin Rumford.

It’s where his life changed and he followed a totally different path, to stardom as a rodeo clown instead of a cowboy.

The Kansas native, who now lives in Ponca City, Okla., grew up in rodeo and competed in high school and college, with big plans to be a professional steer wrestler and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the pinnacle of pro rodeo.

But in North Platte, he had what he calls his “mental breakdown.”

It was 2008 and he was steer wrestling full time, nationwide, with the plans to be one of the top fifteen steer wrestlers in the nation at the end of the season so he could compete for a world title at the National Finals.

In North Platte, he broke the barrier to add a ten second penalty to his time, which would have won him first place.

He was out of money - $36 to his name, a wife at home, and his dreams were dashed.

“I was sitting on the bucking chutes at noon, after slack, all by myself,” he said. He told his traveling partners Shane Henderson and Dru Melvin to go on to the next rodeo without him. He was done.

“I had no ride home, nowhere to go, and I was about to cry.”

That’s when his destiny began to change.

Stock contractor Bennie Beutler walked up and said, “what the hell’s wrong with you?” Rumford told him, “I didn’t make it. I’m going to go home and get a job.”

Beutler, who provides the bucking horses and bulls for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, offered him a job, driving truck and livestock to rodeos, with the chance to continue to steer wrestle at the rodeos he worked.

So he worked fulltime for Beutler, steer wrestling on the side.

He worked for Beutler three years, hauling livestock to Beutler rodeos across the nation: not only North Platte, but Burwell, Phillipsburg, Kan., Tucson, Ariz., Austin, Texas, Greeley, Colo., and more.

In 2010, he worked as clown at a bull riding in Pretty Prairie, Kan., and it began to dawn on him: he could make a living as a clown. Rumford has always had a quick wit and sense of humor, but he never wanted to clown.

He had made connections with rodeo committees and other stock contractors as he worked for Bennie Beutler, and he asked them for jobs.

Rumford fit the clown jobs in between working for Beutler at their rodeos, until one day somebody said, “you’re going to have to decide if you want to do this rodeo clown deal, or work for Bennie, because we’re all finding you jobs and you’re turning them down.”

“He did not take it well,” Rumford said. “He told me, if you’re going to tell jokes, get in the truck and tell jokes on the CB, because you’re not quitting.”

But Rumford did, and he’s never looked back.

“I knew these committee members, and they knew I was hilarious, because I was always cracking jokes. When I called and told them I was going to switch to clowning, I had more of an advantage, because they knew who I was.”

Rumford quickly moved into fulltime work as a rodeo clown, and he’s won two of the PRCA’s most prestigious awards for his category: the Clown of the Year ten times, and the Coors Man in the Can (for barrelmen) three times.

It all comes back to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

“North Platte is where I thought the end of the road was,” he said. It was “God’s timing,” he said.

Rumford will entertain during each night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo June 12-15. Shows begin at 8 pm nightly and are held at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

The Hot Sheets: May 26th, 2024

&nbsp; Lemoyne, Neb. - KLFD was advised at 1751 of downed powerlines and damage structures at Lakeview Estates subdivision. KLFD responded and found numerous homes and outbuildings destroyed by a tornado. During size-up, it was determined that people were trapped in the rubble. 

A Mutual Aid call went out to Ogallala, Brule, Imperial, Grant, Paxton, Arthur, Keith County EMS, NSP, KCSO, and Emergency Management for help. Once everyone arrived on-scene assignments were given to conduct primary and secondary searches of all buildings affected. The trapped people were removed and only one injury occurred. 

Hazards included downed power lines, and hazard trees. Once Lakeview Estates was cleared, efforts were then undertaken in the North Shore and Lemoyne areas for damage as well as the beaches with assistance from the Game &amp; Parks crew. 2 campers were blown over one at Beach access 14 and the other at 17. Total buildings destroyed at Lakeview Estates was 22. Total damaged at North Shore was 39. Other buildings further east of that area also received major damage. Thank you to all that assisted us through the night and again this morning. Couldn't have done it without you&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: May 25th, 2024

Ogallala, Neb. - Lake McConaughy, just north of Ogallala was hit with severe weather late Thursday afternoon resulting in the loss of a few homes and damage to numerous homes and buildings.&nbsp;

At this time, it has been confirmed that three houses were destroyed due to the severe weather that hit the area. Sandy Beach Paradise located on the north side of Lake McConaughy was hit hard. Numerous houses and buildings in this area were damaged. 

After the storm hit Thursday, Keith County Emergency Management announced the closure of Highway 92 so fire crews can work on getting citizens who were trapped from the storm. As of now, no injuries have been reported.&nbsp;

On the other side of Lake McConaughy, Bayside Golf Course clubhouse roof took some damage from the storm. Friday morning, crews were working on the roof and the course was open to golfers.

The Nebraska Game and Parks has announced that Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Areas will remain open with campsites available. <a href="https://northplattepost.com/posts/5014374e-dc23-49ae-834b-c7bf81ee7328">Click here</a> to learn more.

Chief Sign Company out of Ogallala were on the north side of the lake near&nbsp;North Shore and the Lemoyne area cutting down tree branches.&nbsp;

In total, it has been confirmed that three tornados hit Keith County and nine total tornados hit the listening area. Severe Weather hits Lake McConaughy ahead of busy weekend

Despite high winds that tore through the north side of Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area May 23, the park remains open, with all campsites available.

Visitors should be aware trees are down across the entire north shore and crews will be working all weekend to remove them. Power is currently out at Lone Eagle and Sandy Beach campgrounds, but power is expected to be restored by midday Friday.

Some beach access is limited as a few areas washed out in the storm. The fish-cleaning station at Cedar View was damaged and is out of order.

The adjacent Lake Ogalla SRA also is open despite having downed tree limbs.

The highways to both state recreation areas were temporarily closed Thursday night, but have since reopened.

Visitors to both SRAs are encouraged to mindful of the weather forecast as well as clean-up crews as they enjoy their stay.

By Nebraska Game and ParksDespite high winds that tore through the north side of Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area May 23, the park remains open, with all campsites available.Visitors should be aware trees are down across the entire north shore and crews will be working all weekend to remove them. Power is currently out at Lone Eagle and Sandy Beach campgrounds, but power is expected to be restored by midday Friday.Some beach access is limited as a few areas washed out in the storm. The fish-cleaning station at Cedar View was damaged and is out of order.The adjacent Lake Ogalla SRA also is open despite having downed tree limbs.The highways to both state recreation areas were temporarily closed Thursday night, but have since reopened.Visitors to both SRAs are encouraged to mindful of the weather forecast as well as clean-up crews as they enjoy their stay.

North Platte, Neb. - Search warrant on South Walnut Street in North Platte leads to the arrest of four individuals.

According to officials, on Saturday, May 18, Officers with the North Platte Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 600 block of South Walnut Street.&nbsp; The search warrant was executed after an investigation into a report of narcotic violations at the residence.&nbsp; 

While performing the search of the residence officers seized approximately 4.8 ounces of methamphetamine and 463 pills containing fentanyl.&nbsp;

According to officials, the occupants of the residence were identified as Terry Barthel (23), Adrian Kuhlmann (20), Armani Vieyra (30), and Twila Hamilton (44).&nbsp;

Terry Barthel, Adrian Kuhlman, Armani Vieyra and Twila Hamilton were arrested and charged with distribution or possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine (Class IC Felony), distribute or possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II, or III controlled substance – fentanyl (Class IIA Felony), and child abuse (Class IIIA Felony).

Officials stated a minor child was found inside the home and has been&nbsp;placed into safe living conditions.

Ogallala, Ne - Multiple reports of tornadoes in Garden, Keith, Perkins and Lincoln counties Thursday began to come in from weather spotters and National Weather Service personell as early as 5pm MDT. Reports came in from Brule, Lemoyne, just west of Ogallala, south of Roscoe and northeast of Grant.

There were reports from the Nebraska State Patrol of damage from debris on railroad tracks near Lemoyne and Sandy Beach Road. In fact it was reported that Sandy Beach was closed due to search and rescue attempts although the POST has not confirmed that as of this story.

Sirens began to sound around 8:30pm local time in North Platte. The tornado in question was south of North Platte, southwest of Lake Maloney.&nbsp;

Multiple tornados rip through area Thursday night; damage near Lake McConaughy

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Public Schools Foundation announces its Distinguished Alumni group for 2024. Traci Dugan, 1981; Ryan Mueller, 2001; and Dr. William “Bill” Palmer, 1966 (posthumously), have been selected for their outstanding accomplishments.

The North Platte Public School Foundation and North Platte High School honor a group of Distinguished Alumni each year. These awards recognize the accomplishments of North Platte High School's most notable graduates.

A committee of Foundation directors, NPHS administrators, alumni and community review applications that are good for three years. Nominations are accepted year-round.

The “Flappers &amp; Gents, A Night at the Speakeasy”&nbsp; will take place on July 26 at Venue 304 in North Platte. Tickets are available on the Foundation website at&nbsp;<a href="http://nppsf.org/alumni/education-after-hours.html" target="_blank">nppsf.org/alumni/education-after-hours.html</a>

Dugan began her aviation career as a young girl. She accomplished her first solo flight at 16 years of age, before receiving her driver’s license. Her father, Gary Trego, a flight instructor, taught her and others how to pilot an aircraft at the family cattle ranch.

In an industry with primarily male jet pilots, Dugan earned her Airline Transport Pilot license and made a name for herself in the business. In her letter of recommendation, Jane Wilkinson said Dugan is respected by her colleagues as one of the best in the business.

Dugan helped grow the family’s company, Trego Dugan Aviation, into a business with aviation services, including private jet charters, airline ground handling on nationwide airlines, airline maintenance and avionics services at their fixed base operations.

The company has grown from a group of eight employees to thousands of team members across the country. Trego Dugan Aviation Cargo handles over 80 million packages a year, TDA Ground Handling manages 50,000 commercial flights, and TDA Charter handles thousands of private jets.

Dugan and her husband Vince joined Trego Dugan Aviation in 1996 and returned to North Platte. They have two children, Mathew and Mia.

Mueller received the 2022&nbsp; Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Award for the state of Utah for his work at Mount Logan Middle School.

In a nomination letter, Larry Lang, Pastor, mentor and friend, said Mueller strives to make an impact in the lives of the students he teaches. Ellie McClymont, former North Platte Public Schools teacher and school board member said she has fond memories of Mueller’s wit and sense of humor.&nbsp;

Mueller graduated as a valedictorian from North Platte High School in 2001. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2006, he graduated from UNL with distinction, earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education Social Sciences. Mueller also earned his master’s degree in educational administration from UNL in 2012.

His father, Al Mueller, introduced his son to Boy Scouts and was his Scoutmaster for eight years with Troop 291. Mueller earned 31 Merit Badges and held several leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow.

He received his Eagle Scout award in 1998 and told his dad that the lessons he learned in Scouting helped in his leadership roles.

Mueller graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and worked for four years at the State Attorney General’s Office while a student.

He began his teaching career at Wahoo, Nebraska, before taking the job in Logan, Utah. Mueller lives in Smithfield, Utah with his wife, Jessica Rivera-Mueller, an English professor at Utah State University, and their two sons, Luke and Ethan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paul Wagner, principal at Mount Logan Middle Schools, said Mueller is a “master teacher who is passionate about his craft, his influence among the students and helping young people understand the importance of American history.

“(He) has a natural presence and ethos that students respect and respond to from the first day that they enter his class.”

Susan M. Heine, director of learning at Wahoo Public Schools wrote, “Mr. Mueller facilitates students in their journey toward seeing themselves as a continual part of history and further conceptualizes that what they learn in the classroom will help them develop into engaged citizens capable of participating fully in the world as 21st&nbsp;Century citizens.”

Dr. William “Bill” Palmer (posthumously)

Palmer graduated as a valedictorian at North Platte High School in 1966. He then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1969 and then from medical school at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1973.

He completed his Internal Medicine Residency with Board Certification in 1976 and his Rheumatology Fellowship with Board Certification in 1978 at the Albany, New York, Medical Center, where he met his wife, Leslie.

Palmer was the first board-certified rheumatologist in Omaha and was in private practice for over 43 years. He actively participated with the University of Nebraska Department of Internal Medicine for 25 years in the education of medical residents.

Marge Beatty wrote in her letter of recommendation that Palmer was supported and nurtured in a loving, Christian home during his childhood. His father was a state patrolman and his mother was the church organist at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte.

She said “His positive attitude toward life, his commitment to others and his leadership abilities were very apparent from a young age.”

Childhood friend Gary Westphal said his friendship with Palmer “deepened through the years” and “he was a warm, thoughtful and dependable person who remembered birthdays, anniversaries and everything else.”

Colleague and friend Joel M. Kremer, MD, said in an article written for the publication&nbsp;Rheumatologist&nbsp;in 2021, that Palmer was respected, admired and loved by all who knew him. “He was the genuine article, unencumbered and undiluted by what really doesn’t matter in this life.”

Palmer received numerous awards over his lifetime and in 2014 was awarded the American College of Rheumatology Masters Awards of Distinction Presidential Gold Medal. It is the highest award the ACR can bestow and is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in rheumatology over an entire career.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their three children; daughters, Lindsey (Marc) Milanowski, Lauren Palmer, and son David (Maggie) Palmer.

Traci Dugan, 1981; Ryan Mueller, 2001; and Dr. William “Bill” Palmer, 1966 (posthumously), have been selected for their outstanding accomplishments.The North Platte Public School Foundation and North Platte High School honor a group of Distinguished Alumni each year. These awards recognize the accomplishments of North Platte High School's most notable graduates.A committee of Foundation directors, NPHS administrators, alumni and community review applications that are good for three years. Nominations are accepted year-round.The “Flappers &amp; Gents, A Night at the Speakeasy”&nbsp; will take place on July 26 at Venue 304 in North Platte. She accomplished her first solo flight at 16 years of age, before receiving her driver’s license. Her father, Gary Trego, a flight instructor, taught her and others how to pilot an aircraft at the family cattle ranch.In an industry with primarily male jet pilots, Dugan earned her Airline Transport Pilot license and made a name for herself in the business. In her letter of recommendation, Jane Wilkinson said Dugan is respected by her colleagues as one of the best in the business.Dugan helped grow the family’s company, Trego Dugan Aviation, into a business with aviation services, including private jet charters, airline ground handling on nationwide airlines, airline maintenance and avionics services at their fixed base operations.The company has grown from a group of eight employees to thousands of team members across the country. Trego Dugan Aviation Cargo handles over 80 million packages a year, TDA Ground Handling manages 50,000 commercial flights, and TDA Charter handles thousands of private jets.Dugan and her husband Vince joined Trego Dugan Aviation in 1996 and returned to North Platte. They have two children, Mathew and Mia.<figure>

 </figure>Ryan MuellerMueller received the 2022&nbsp; Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Award for the state of Utah for his work at Mount Logan Middle School.In a nomination letter, Larry Lang, Pastor, mentor and friend, said Mueller strives to make an impact in the lives of the students he teaches. Ellie McClymont, former North Platte Public Schools teacher and school board member said she has fond memories of Mueller’s wit and sense of humor.&nbsp;Mueller graduated as a valedictorian from North Platte High School in 2001. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2006, he graduated from UNL with distinction, earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education Social Sciences. Mueller also earned his master’s degree in educational administration from UNL in 2012.His father, Al Mueller, introduced his son to Boy Scouts and was his Scoutmaster for eight years with Troop 291. Mueller earned 31 Merit Badges and held several leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow.He received his Eagle Scout award in 1998 and told his dad that the lessons he learned in Scouting helped in his leadership roles.Mueller graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and worked for four years at the State Attorney General’s Office while a student.He began his teaching career at Wahoo, Nebraska, before taking the job in Logan, Utah. Mueller lives in Smithfield, Utah with his wife, Jessica Rivera-Mueller, an English professor at Utah State University, and their two sons, Luke and Ethan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Paul Wagner, principal at Mount Logan Middle Schools, said Mueller is a “master teacher who is passionate about his craft, his influence among the students and helping young people understand the importance of American history.“(He) has a natural presence and ethos that students respect and respond to from the first day that they enter his class.”Susan M. Heine, director of learning at Wahoo Public Schools wrote, “Mr. Mueller facilitates students in their journey toward seeing themselves as a continual part of history and further conceptualizes that what they learn in the classroom will help them develop into engaged citizens capable of participating fully in the world as 21st&nbsp;Century citizens.”<figure>

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte city council held a regular meeting on May 21st and different agendas were discussed amongst the council. Topics included Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plan, first reading and action on Ordinance No. 4164, approving the construction bid for Samson Construction on the Rec Center renovations and more.&nbsp;
