Officials with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said the State Recreation Area is booked for the entire weekend, however, no other weekends are fully booked at this time.

You may still be able to find availability at private campgrounds. For a list of private campgrounds and lodges in the area, click <a href="https://ilovelakemac.com/lake-info/camping/">HERE.</a>

Lake McConaughy camping booked for July 4th weekend

North Platte Community College’s Business and Community Education department is now accepting registrations for Driver Education classes in July.

Classes are open to entry-level drivers ages 14-17 and are scheduled for Monday through Friday, July 19-23.

There are two sessions per day: 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. One session is for classroom instruction, and the other is to practice driving. Students can pick which one they do first.

The course consists of 20 hours in the classroom and five hours of drive time as required by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.

Classes will be based out of Room 105 in the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte.

Instruction will be provided on driver awareness, motor vehicle operation, rules of the road and basic traffic laws.

Those who successfully complete the program will receive a drive test waiver. Students must already have a learner’s permit, attend all sessions and meet all drive requirements in order to obtain the waiver.

The fee is $235, which includes the cost of a book.

Since President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. was sworn into office in January, our country has seen a dramatic shift in national policy and how the federal government treats states.&nbsp; From tax hikes to new regulations, the Biden-Harris Administration has charted a more liberal course than the Trump Administration.&nbsp; Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been traveling the state highlighting the threat that President Biden’s 30 x 30 plan poses to Nebraska, but that isn’t the only issue of concern at the federal level.&nbsp; There are several different issues on the horizon that could affect Nebraska’s ag economy.&nbsp; I’ll briefly highlight a few of them here. &nbsp;

Meat Processing Investigation:&nbsp;The meat processing industry has been consolidating for years.&nbsp; This has left producers with very limited options when marketing their cattle.&nbsp; In light of this, there have been questions about pricing in the industry.&nbsp; While processors are making about $900 a head, I am concerned that high prices paid on the boxed beef side have not always translated into higher prices paid to producers.&nbsp; Over the last several years, the producers’ share of profits has declined, while the price of fresh beef has jumped.&nbsp; In May 2020, President Trump tasked the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the business practices of our nation’s four largest meat processors. &nbsp;At that time, the DOJ’s anti-trust division began looking into allegations of anti-competitive practices in the beef industry.&nbsp; Last month, I joined five other Governors in sending a letter to DOJ seeking an update on its investigation.&nbsp; It has now been over a year since DOJ began its probe. &nbsp;Both livestock producers and consumers deserve to know the status of the investigation.&nbsp; The DOJ also needs to prioritize its work to ensure fairness for producers and consumers and to restore trust within the cattle industry.&nbsp; You can read the full letter at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.governor.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">www.Governor.Nebraska.gov</a>.

Renewable Fuel Standard:&nbsp;Nebraska is the second-largest ethanol-producing state in the nation. &nbsp;Recently, the ethanol industry has faced some uncertainty. &nbsp;The Biden-Harris Administration has put an increasing focus on electric vehicles, which threatens the existence of combustion engines and consequently both the oil and ethanol industries. &nbsp;In February, we received some good news when the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the ethanol industry in regards to blending requirements for oil refineries. &nbsp;In the coming months, we can expect the Biden Administration to issue Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). &nbsp;It is critical that the Environmental Protection Agency&nbsp;(EPA) enforce a robust RFS as promised by Congress.

Waters of the United States (WOTUS):&nbsp;Under the Obama Administration, the EPA overstepped its&nbsp;legal authority by attempting to expand the definition of “waters of the United States.”&nbsp; Previously, the EPA unlawfully tried to expand its oversight of everything from small ponds to puddles formed from runoff at construction sites.&nbsp; Last week, the Biden Administration pledged to renew this effort to exert more federal control over the nation’s water resources.&nbsp; When they tried this in the past, the State of Nebraska successfully sued the Obama Administration and then celebrated when the Trump Administration rolled back the overreaching rule.&nbsp; The Biden-Harris Administration is renewing efforts to expand federal control, and we will fight back again if needed.&nbsp; Nebraska will be watching the federal government closely, and will do all we can to protect our land and water from Washington, D.C. overreach.

Officials said this particular caller provides a reference number and is offering benefits. 

Residents are urged to help educate their family, friends and neighbors about this scam. 

The Federal Communications Commission offers these tips:

•  You may not be able to tell right away that the call is not real as scammers often use technology to spoof caller-ID.

•  Never give out personal information, such as Social Security number, passwords, mother's maiden names or account numbers.

•  If you get an inquiry from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency seeking personal information, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, in the phone book or on the company's or government agency's website to verify the authenticity of the request.

•  Use caution if you are being pressured for information immediately.

If you suspect a scam call, report it to local law enforcement.

Heat Advisory issued for North Platte, surrounding areas

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-After a schoolyear that was far from ordinary for North Platte Public Schools students, district officials have announced an updated plan regarding COVID-19 and the return to school next year.

On Tuesday, school officials informed parents of their current plans for the 2021-22 school year, when students return in the Fall.

Officials are encouraging all staff and students who are eligible to get vaccinated. Officials asked those interested in getting vaccinated to contact the West Central District Health Department for details.

After making masks optional for the last few days last year, officials plan to continue to make masks and face coverings optional, provided the community risk dial remains in the Green or "low" risk level.

Additionally, the schools will no longer offer the option for students to learn via remote learning. Officials encouraged students to return to the classroom for in-person learning.

The plan is fluid and officials said it could change as information and circumstances change.

Scott Frost and company set to stop in North Platte Wednesday

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Apparently North Platte residents didn't lose their sweet tooth after COVID canceled Nebraskaland Days last year as the Sweet Saloon was a huge success in 2021.

The Sweet Saloon is a fundraiser conducted by the North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team every year during Nebraskaland Days to earn money for NPCC volleyball scholarships. 

More than 700 dozen rolls were sold this year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)-Nebraska government tax collections surged well above projections in May, with the state collecting $297 million more than expected. 

The Nebraska Department of Revenue on Tuesday reported net tax receipts $720 million, which was more than 70% higher than the official forecast of $423 million. 

The increase was driven by corporate income tax collections that were 375% above the certified state forecast and individual income tax collections that were 97% above the forecast. 

Net sales-and-use and miscellaneous tax receipts were 14.9% and 30.9% higher, respectively. Net tax collections have also been higher than expected during the current fiscal year, which ends this month.

Nebraska tax collections surge past expectations in May

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is approaching having 70% of its adult population vaccinated for the coronavirus but the pace of distribution of the shots continues to slow down. 

The state may be close to President Joe Biden’s goal of having 70% or more of all adults with at least one dose of the vaccine by July 4. 

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said about 63% of Nebraskans 18 and older had received at least one shot as of Friday. That rate ranks 24th among all the states. 

The CDC said roughly 31,000 shots were distributed in Nebraska last week, which was down from 37,000 the week before.

AP -&nbsp;Renowned spiritual leader and Native American rights activist Chief Leonard Crow Dog has died at age 78. 

Indian Country Today reports that the Sicangu Lakota Oyate man died June 6 at Crow Dog’s Paradise on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. 

Crow Dog attended and spoke at countless rallies, marches and protests over the years. 

He's credited with helping add the renewal of cultural traditions to the American Indian Movement’s goals. 

In 1972, he took part in The Trail of Broken Treaties, which included the occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ headquarters in Washington.

 He also participated and was arrested in the 1973 occupation at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

North Platte Public Schools Superintendent Ron Hansen said schools are not required to adopt the proposal and spoke firmly against it.

&nbsp; "North Platte Public Schools will not adopt the proposed health standards as they are currently written, "&nbsp;said Dr. Hanson.&nbsp; "If the Nebraska Department&nbsp;of Education reevaluates these standards and shares draft two,&nbsp;the&nbsp;administration&nbsp;will share the updates with the&nbsp;North Platte board of education for review."&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Once&nbsp;the&nbsp;board has had an opportunity to review the revised standards, they will&nbsp;discuss and determine next steps&nbsp;and notify the district and community of the&nbsp;district's next step before taking any action," said Dr. Hansen.

The North Platte Public Schools Board of Education addressed the issue at its meeting Monday night.

Officials also invite all stakeholders to review the health standards and express their questions or concerns to the Nebraska Department of Education at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.education.ne.gov/healthed/health-education-standards-development/" target="_blank">https://www.education.ne.gov/healthed/health-education-standards-development/</a>

Four more Registration Days are planned at Mid-Plains Community College campuses in McCook and North Platte this summer.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb.-During the summer of 2020, entomologists from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Entomology identified a species of kissing bug for the first time in Nebraska.

“Kissing bug" is the common name for a group of bugs called triatomines. These are blood-sucking insects that are found across the Southern United States, Mexico, Central, and South America&nbsp;especially&nbsp;during the summer months. The species recently detected in Nebraska was identified as&nbsp;Triatoma sanguisuga&nbsp;or the Eastern blood-sucking conenose (Figure 1). This species has been found as far north as Pennsylvania and as far west as Texas (Figure 2).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The main risk associated with kissing bugs is the presence of a parasite called&nbsp;Trypanosoma cruzi&nbsp;(T. cruzi&nbsp;for short)&nbsp;that lives in the bug's intestines and is shed in feces. This parasite can cause Chagas disease in the people and animals it infects. Although infections from this parasite are not common, approximately 25% of people that are infected develop serious chronic disease, so early diagnosis is important. Importantly, infections from the Eastern blood-sucking conenose are even rarer and the risk of infection in Nebraska is considered to be very low. However, some of the collected kissing bugs were tested for the presence of&nbsp;T. cruzi&nbsp;with several testing positive for the parasite. This is the first recorded detection of this parasite in Nebraska.

Anyone who has seen kissing bugs in their home or who thinks they may have been bitten by one should talk to their doctor about getting tested for Chagas disease.

We have put together some basic information and resources on Chagas disease and kissing bugs. Read on to learn more.

There are 11 different kinds of kissing bugs in the United States. Most of the reports of the different kissing bugs have come from Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. Kissing bugs have been found and documented in the U.S. as early as the mid-1800s. These species are not new to the U.S. and not all kissing bugs will be infected with the parasite.

The&nbsp;Eastern blood-sucking conenose is approximately ¾ inches long with a&nbsp;blackish, flattened, and elongated body. The sides of the abdomen extend out beyond the wings, showing six reddish-orange horizontal markings on each side. There are also four distinctive reddish-orange markings on wings.

Look-alike species that are confused for kissing bugs

Don't be fooled, there are several insect species found in Nebraska that look like kissing bugs but are not true kissing bugs (Figure 3).

Kissing bugs can live indoors, in cracks and holes of housing, or in a variety of outdoor settings including:1

They are mostly nocturnal and are often attracted to lights such as porch lights. Their bite is often painless and usually occurs when a person is still or asleep.

Chagas disease, also called American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially deadly disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. This parasite is spread to people and animals by the feces of infected kissing bugs. When a kissing bug takes a blood meal, it may defecate and leave behind the parasite on the skin. When feces are rubbed into the wound, including areas in or around the eyes or nose, the parasite enters the host. Other less common ways to get Chagas disease are from mother-to-fetus, blood transfusions (rare), organ transplantation from an infected donor, or contaminated food or drink (rare).

Chagas disease can be difficult to identify, and many of the people who have the disease do not have symptoms until years or even decades after being infected. Chagas disease has two important phases.

This phase happens immediately after infections and can last about 8–10 weeks. During this phase, parasites may be found in the circulating blood. This phase of infection is usually mild or with no symptoms at all. Some may experience a fever or swelling around the bite site. It is rare to diagnose Chagas disease during this phase.

Following the acute phase, most infected people enter into a prolonged form of the disease called chronic Chagas disease. During this phase, parasites are not found in the blood and&nbsp;there are often no symptoms. Most people are unaware of their infection and may remain without symptoms for life. However, an estimated 20–30% of infected people will go on to develop severe and sometimes life-threatening medical problems over the course of their lives. These may include:

Chagas disease can reactivate with parasites found in the circulating blood in people who have suppressed immune systems (for example, due to HIV infection or chemotherapy). Reactivation can potentially cause severe disease. Chagas disease often is a life-long diagnosis; however, there are treatment options available, requiring regular follow-ups with your doctor.

There are no known impacts on livestock, but dogs have been known to be affected by Chagas.

Chagas Disease Diagnosis and Treatment

If you have had contact with a kissing bug or think you may have Chagas disease, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor, who will examine you and ask you questions (for example, about your health and where you have lived). Chagas disease is diagnosed by blood tests.

If you are found to have Chagas disease, your doctor may recommend follow-up monitoring of the heart (electrocardiogram), even if you feel healthy. You might be referred to an infectious disease specialist for more tests or for treatment. Because the disease is rare in the United States, many doctors may not be familiar with Chagas disease. It may be helpful to share resources with your physician.2

So, what do I do if I find a kissing bug?

First of all,&nbsp;don't panic. Chagas disease is uncommon in the United States and contact with a single kissing bug does not mean someone will get Chagas disease. The kissing bug must be infected with the parasite, have defecated while taking a blood meal, and feces must enter the bite wound or mucus membrane in order for someone to contract Chagas disease. This route of transmission is very inefficient and studies estimate that a person is bitten by an infected kissing bug many times before transmission is successful.

If you reside in Nebraska and capture a bug that you know or suspect has bitten you or someone in your home, get the bug tested for the parasite. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Vector-Borne Disease Program will accept kissing bugs for identification (call (402) 471-2937). If the bug is identified as a kissing bug, it will be forwarded to the CDC to be tested for the parasite that causes Chagas disease. However,&nbsp;they must have been found inside the home or be suspected of having bitten someone. If the kissing bug tests positive, it is recommended you speak with your doctor about getting tested. You must wait until past the 8–10 weeks of the acute phase before testing for antibodies. Chagas disease antibody tests may give a falsely negative result if taken too soon after exposure. The diagnosis MUST be confirmed before any treatment options are provided.

Additionally, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of entomology are interested in tracking kissing bug detections and distribution in the state.&nbsp;If a kissing bug is found outside the home and NOT suspected of biting a human, it may be sent to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Insect Diagnostician Kyle Koch for identification by calling (402) 472-8691.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Transportation are urging all motorists to travel safely after a tragic week on Nebraska roadways.

“This past week, 15 people lost their lives in traffic crashes across Nebraska,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Every life lost is a tragedy, and this past week should serve as a stark reminder for everyone of how critical it is to drive safely.”

The circumstances of every crash are different, but there are steps that any motorist can take to reduce the potential for serious injury or fatality crashes. Those actions include obeying traffic laws, following posted speed limits, always driving sober, avoiding distractions, and wearing a seat belt.

“Every traffic fatality has devastating impacts on the communities and families left behind. As summer hits full swing and people across the state begin to enjoy travel again, there is increased traffic on roadways,” said NDOT Director John Selmer. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy this summer safely.&nbsp;Please remember to plan your trip in advance, practice patience, and to always buckle up.”

Any motorist who needs assistance on the road or would like to report a dangerous driver can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555. Motorists can also view real-time road information, including the location of construction zones or active crash responses on the Nebraska 511 System, via the Nebraska 511 app or at&nbsp;<a href="http://511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.nebraska.gov</a>.

To date, there have been 94 roadway fatalities across Nebraska in 2021, compared to an average of 91 during the previous five years.

NSP, NDOT urge safety after tragic week on Nebraska roads

Quilts of Valor are awarded to honor service members and veterans who have been touched by war with comforting and healing. 

On June 11 Alvin Cooper, 96, and brother Bill, 85, received their quilts. The quilts honor them for leaving all they hold dear to serve their country, whether in times of crisis or peace.

Alvin was nominated by his brother Bill, who lives in North Platte. Alvin was in the Army, the Air Force and the National Guard/Reserve units from 1941-1969 serving during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Some of his assigned duty stations were Germany, Alaska, England, Japan, South America, Korea, Vietnam and many other areas. 

He was a high-speed radio operator and a waist gunner on the bomber crews serving in the 404th Bombardment Squadron. Also, as part of the 509th Air Refueling Squadron in 1959, he was assigned to the 57th Medical Detachment. Then in 1962, he was assigned to the first helicopter ambulance to go to Vietnam.

Some of the memories from service include when the B-24 was heading back to home base and the fuel was low and making it safely back; taking a long flight to a target and code and decode transmissions; debriefings after every mission; the food; writing letters to family back home; packages and letters from home; receiving the news that the war was over. He has many stories from his 26 years old serving from bombs to helicopters with many awards for his job well done.

Brother Bill was drafted in the US Army in 1952. He went to Missouri Ozarks to do basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. He spent time in England at the Army Parts Department as a stock clerk.

Bill considered himself as a regular GI Joe, but without the stocked supplies that got shipped all over to our men and women, there wouldn’t have been the support our troops have desperately needed so many times. He signed the dotted line which meant you’d give your life to protect the United States with no clue what your job would be. You are a hero.

Hermesch was assisted by Karen Schliefert to present the quilts. Marilyn McGahan, North Platte Group Leader, made Bill’s Quilt of Valor, but she was not able to attend the presentation.

When the Quilt of Valor is presented to the veteran, the service person sees the quilt first, then turned around for all to see. The quilt is folded in half and draped around the veteran’s shoulders like a cape. The quilt is closed around the chest with a squeeze and the veteran is looked in the eyes by the person draping the quilt saying “This is your Quilt of Valor quilt hug. Thank you for your service. Welcome Home.”

Bill wanted the presentation of the Quilts of Valor to Alvin and himself on June 11, as that was Alvin’s wife, Mona’s 90th birthday. Those in attendance for the presentation of the Quilts of Valor, also celebrated Mona’s birthday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts on Monday has marked the 150th anniversary of the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. 

Ricketts proclaimed “State Museum Day” to acknowledge the contribution of the museum and others throughout Nebraska. 

The University of Nebraska State Museum is a staple of the university’s flagship campus, with displays of history, wildlife and geology, among other features. 

This year also marks the 60-year anniversary of the Trailside Museum in the Panhandle and the 30-year anniversary of Ashfall Fossil Beds in northeast Nebraska.

Ricketts marks 150th anniversary of NU State Museum

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline are asking Nebraska state regulators to revoke the land easements granted to the company across private land now that the project has officially been scrapped. 

Attorneys for Bold Nebraska and the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska made the request in a letter to the Nebraska Public Service Commission, which approved the pipeline’s proposed route in 2017. 

Attorneys Ken Winston and Brad Jolly say the commission has an obligation to protect the property rights of landowners that are threatened as long as the route approval remains in effect. 

The attorneys say the current situation with developer TC Energy limits landowners’ ability to use and develop their property and has a negative impact on its economic viability.

Pipeline foes ask Nebraska to revoke project land easements

GERING, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol has identified a driver killed last week in a crash near the western Nebraska city of Gering. 

The patrol says Erin Vigil, 45, of Scottsbluff, was behind the wheel of a large sport utility vehicle that crashed Friday morning. 

Investigators say the SUV was traveling east on Highway 92 when it crossed the highway, entered the left ditch and rolled.

Scottsbluff man killed in western Nebraska crash

MAXWELL, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska sheriff's office says two people drowned last week when the pickup truck they were in rolled into a water-filled canal. 

The crash happened Thursday afternoon when the truck lost control on a rural road and went into the Tri-County Canal near Fort McPherson National Cemetery. 

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said by the time first responders arrived, workers with the Central Nebraska Public Power &amp; Irrigation District had already jumped into the water and pulled out Alex Sanchez, 74, of North Platte, who died at the scene. 

A county dive team later recovered the body of Kimberly McCarter, 52, of Papillion.
