LINCOLN, Neb. — A 15-year-old girl from Bayard was injured in a jet ski accident Saturday night at Bridgeport State Recreation Area near Gering, Nebraska. She is recovering at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colorado.

The teen was injured at about 6 p.m. Mountain time when the jet ski on which she was riding passenger was struck by a second jet ski also driven by a teen from Bayard.

The three teens had been riding two jet skis around the island, when the first jet ski made a hard turn. The driver of the second jet ski couldn’t avoid a collision and struck the female, who was thrown into the water.

The teen was taken by ambulance to the Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport with nonlife-threatening injuries. She was transported to Children’s Hospital Colorado where she is being treated for her injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office and Morrill County Emergency Services assisted at the scene.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-After three nights of competition, Miss Nebraska 2021 was crowned at the North Platte High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday Night.

Miss Omaha Morgan Holen won the title and will serve as the state's official ambassador and represent Nebraska at the Miss America Competition at a date to be determined in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Holen follows in the footsteps of her mother Jodi, who was Miss Nebraska in 1988.

Holen's talent is dance and her platform is "Lead with your strengths: The power of strengths-based mentoring."

Holen will receive over $22,000 in cash awards and over $1.5 million in college scholarships.

Miss Kool-Aid Days Allison Baird was the runner-up and would assume the job of Miss Nebraska if Holen were ever unable to fulfill her duties.

Miss Nebraska's Outstanding Teen 2021 was also crowned on Saturday.

Miss Scotts Bluff County Outstanding Teen Jamie Rose Chen took the title.

Chen will represent Nebraska in Orlando, Florida at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen competition in July.

Chen, who received a full-ride scholarship offer to the University of Nebraska Lincoln when she was in middle school, will receive a $2,000 cash scholarship.

Two North Platte natives, Miss North Platte Outstanding Teen Aubrie Charter and&nbsp; Miss Heartland Emily Hendren, were the Non-Finalist Talent award winners and performed their talents on Saturday.

Miss Omaha crowned Miss Nebraska 2021

LINCOLN, Neb. — In honor of 100 years of state parks, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is calling on birders to find and identify 100 bird species in its park areas by the end of 2021.

Birders of all experience levels are invited to visit Game and Parks’ state parks, state recreation areas, state historical parks or wildlife management areas to spot birds and log them using eBird or iNaturalist. Both are available online or via mobile app.

Once completed, participants should email their bird list from iNaturalist or ebird to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:ngpc.wildcat.hills@nebraska.gov" target="_blank">ngpc.wildcat.hills@nebraska.gov</a>. Birds already recorded during May’s Nebraska Bird Month will count toward the Centennial Bird Challenge.

KELO radio reports Noem traveled to Arkansas on Friday to give the keynote address at the annual Reagan-Rockefeller Day gathering. 

She received a .44 Magnum Henry Big Boy lever-action rifle as the keynote speaker. 

The rifle came with the Arkansas Republican Party logo on the stock.

 Henry Repeating Rifles presents the gathering's keynote speaker with a rifle every year. 

The company said in a news release that Noem is an avid outdoorswoman and a possible presidential candidate in 2024.

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have completed the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which focuses on the start of the summer travel season.

During the campaign, which ran from May 24 through June 6, troopers removed 45 impaired drivers from the road. Troopers also assisted 681 motorists in need of help on Nebraska’s roadways.

“Summer travelers are on the road, and that should bring a renewed focus on safety for all motorists,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Unfortunately, this week has been tragic, with several fatality crashes throughout the state. Please be safe on the roads and remember that you can always call a trooper if you need help.”

Throughout the effort, troopers not only arrested 45 drivers for driving under the influence, but also issued citations for speeding (786), no seat belt (24), improper child restraint (7), open alcohol container (22), minor in possession of alcohol (15), driving under suspension (71), and no proof of insurance (45).

Any motorist who needs help can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555. The “Click It or Ticket” campaign was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $25,000 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

Nebraska State Patrol completes Click It or Ticket campaign

LINCOLN, Neb.-Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Chief Executive Officer Dannette R. Smith and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Anthone are announcing that Dr. Matthew Donahue has been appointed Acting State Epidemiologist. He officially began his new position on Monday, June 4, 2021.&nbsp;

Donahue grew up in Iowa, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Iowa State University in 2012 with a major in biology and minor in psychology, before attending the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine and concluding his medical studies with an emphasis in infectious diseases and global health in 2016. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center June 2019 with distinction in research and returned to the Midwest (Nebraska) as an applied epidemiology fellow with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Through his work with the CDC, he served as a field officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service to coordinate epidemiologic investigations and responses domestically and internationally. This partnership brought him to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services in August 2019.

Since 2013 Donahue, has been working in the United States and abroad applying his knowledge in a myriad of hands-on settings. Prior to COVID-19, he has supported domestic responses to gastrointestinal and respiratory disease outbreaks, developed a surveillance system for EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping-related lung injury), and worked on an invasive mosquito eradication campaign. Additionally, he assisted in the development of airport screening protocol for COVID-19 at LAX in 2020 and led the case investigation for the third COVID-19 case in the U.S. Internationally, he has worked on HIV and opportunistic infections in South Africa, helped develop a global health program in rural Peru from 2018 to 2019, and led epi teams during the polio response in Ghana in 2019.

Donahue brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. He supported Nebraska's local health departments and communities in their COVID-19 investigations, helped lead testing studies and expanded testing initiatives and investigations across the state, and developed variant of concern, reinfection, and vaccine breakthrough surveillance systems. He collaborated with the DHHS Data Team on the Nebraska COVID-19 dashboard and facilitated specimen collection processes at a vital time, while coordinating valuable resources in the state's pandemic response and continues do so.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Miss Nebraska preliminary night 2 winners

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved a 2021 river otter harvest season and a 2022 mountain lion hunting season at its June 11 meeting in Chadron.

The Nebraska River Otter Management Plan was adopted by the Commission. The goal of the plan is to maintain resilient, healthy and socially acceptable river otter populations that are in balance with available habitat and other wildlife species.

Otters, at one time on the state Endangered List and then the Threatened List, were delisted in 2020 after years of research showed otter populations had grown and expanded to nearly statewide distribution. The current population is estimated to be more than 2,200. The reintroduction and recovery of river otters is one of the greatest examples of conservation success in Nebraska over the past 40 years.

Changes to Commission orders and regulations were approved to implement a harvest season that will allow the trapping of river otters, which are classified by state statute as a fur-bearing animal. The season will be Nov. 1, 2021, through Feb. 28, 2022, or close earlier once 75 otters have been harvested.

The Commission also approved a mountain lion season in the Pine Ridge Unit. The season dates are similar and the harvest quota will be identical to 2021, with a maximum harvest of four mountain lions or a sublimit of two female lions. The Season 1 Pine Ridge Unit dates will be Jan. 2-Feb. 28, 2022, and if necessary, an Auxiliary Season will be March 12-31, 2022. There will be 320 permits issued via lottery only to Nebraskans.

The objective is to allow a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that allows the population to remain resilient and healthy while limiting future growth or moderately reducing numbers.

 </figure>LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved a 2021 river otter harvest season and a 2022 mountain lion hunting season at its June 11 meeting in Chadron.The Nebraska River Otter Management Plan was adopted by the Commission. The goal of the plan is to maintain resilient, healthy and socially acceptable river otter populations that are in balance with available habitat and other wildlife species.Otters, at one time on the state Endangered List and then the Threatened List, were delisted in 2020 after years of research showed otter populations had grown and expanded to nearly statewide distribution. The current population is estimated to be more than 2,200. The reintroduction and recovery of river otters is one of the greatest examples of conservation success in Nebraska over the past 40 years.Changes to Commission orders and regulations were approved to implement a harvest season that will allow the trapping of river otters, which are classified by state statute as a fur-bearing animal. The season will be Nov. 1, 2021, through Feb. 28, 2022, or close earlier once 75 otters have been harvested.The Commission also approved a mountain lion season in the Pine Ridge Unit. The season dates are similar and the harvest quota will be identical to 2021, with a maximum harvest of four mountain lions or a sublimit of two female lions. The Season 1 Pine Ridge Unit dates will be Jan. 2-Feb. 28, 2022, and if necessary, an Auxiliary Season will be March 12-31, 2022. There will be 320 permits issued via lottery only to Nebraskans.The objective is to allow a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that allows the population to remain resilient and healthy while limiting future growth or moderately reducing numbers.Commissioners approved:<ul>
 <li>changes that allow the Game and Parks to manage public recreation on 234 acres of land owned by Pheasants Forever, Inc. which is adjacent to Commission-owned Jack Sinn Wildlife Management Area in Lancaster County. These additional acres will be open to public access and follow the same regulations as the adjacent WMA.</li><li>changes to sport fishing regulations regarding the application and purchase of paddlefish preference points and where a paddlefish permit is valid.</li><li>changes that added DeFair Lake WMA in Grant County to the list of water bodies where it is illegal to possess or use live baitfish while fishing.</li><li>changes to wildlife regulations that currently prohibit the possession of a firearm while archery and muzzleloader hunting. This change would allow these big game hunters to lawfully carry a handgun with a barrel of no longer than 5 inches.</li><li>changes to clarify hunting restrictions pertaining to the use of bait for big game and turkey.</li><li>changes to establish and implement special depredation seasons for deer, antelope and elk.</li>

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D.&nbsp;– Visitation to national parks is ramping up for the summer, and rangers at Wind Cave National Park encourage visitors to Plan Like a Park Ranger. Follow these tips for an enjoyable and safe visit.

1. Have a plan… and a backup plan: Begin your planning&nbsp;by checking the park’s website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nps.gov/wica" target="_blank">www.nps.gov/wica</a>. The website has information about available services, activities, and places to visit. Flexibility and a backup plan are key in case of sold out tours, changing weather conditions or unexpected traffic delays.&nbsp;

2. Come early. Cave tours are busiest mid-week and any day it rains. The visitor center opens at 8 a.m. with the first tour starting at 8:40 a.m. and the last tour beginning at 5 p.m. Tour tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis on the day of the tour. Currently, tours are selling out around mid to late afternoon. This summer, the park is offering tours of the Natural Entrance, Fairgrounds, and Garden of Eden areas. Wind Cave is famous for its boxwork formation which can be seen on all three tours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

3. Come prepared. If you are taking a tour, the cave temperature is 54 degrees. Wind Cave has 155 miles of explored passages, making it the 3rd-longest cave in the country. A light coat or sweater is recommended as are comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. Leave water bottles, food, packs and bags in the car.&nbsp;&nbsp;

4. Explore the surface. Wind Cave protects one of the last mixed-grass prairie ecosystems, home to a variety of wildlife including bison, elk, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and the endangered black-footed ferret.&nbsp;&nbsp;

5. Take a hike. The park has over 30 miles of hiking trails. For a great view, hike Rankin Ridge, the highest point in the park. The trail is a mile-long loop that takes about an hour to complete.&nbsp;

6. Do lunch, or dinner! Bring a picnic meal, find a scenic view (Rankin Ridge at sunset!) and enjoy the view over a fun meal. There are many highway pull-offs available for viewing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

7. Explore the park’s backcountry roads. Park roads NPS 5 and 6 are gravel roads along the park’s eastern area. A favorite overlook along NPS 5 is at Lone Pine Point which provides a sweeping view of Red Valley and Buffalo Gap. Wildlife is often more visible from these roads than the park’s main highways. Don’t just drive by the wildlife. Spend a few minutes observing their movements and interactions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

8. Be careful out there. Legally people only need to be 25 yards from wildlife, but rangers advise watching the animal’s behavior. If the animal alters their behavior because of people, they are too close. Bison are agile, fast, and ill-tempered. Stay safe by giving them room.&nbsp;

9. Explore the new NPS app. It offers tools to explore more than 400 national parks with interactive maps, tours, and accessibility information. More content is added daily.&nbsp;

10. Don’t forget to bring your patience. National parks are packed this summer as people seek relief from being cooped up. Allow extra travel time because the park is busier than normal. Keep in mind people who are not fully vaccinated must wear masks inside park buildings, the cave, and in crowded outdoor areas. &nbsp; Wind Cave National Park is open year-around. NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Students planning to attend Registration Days at North Platte Community College June 24 and July 29 will be able to audition for music scholarships at the same time.

“Any student registering for Concert Choir or Jazz Band is eligible for a scholarship,” said Kristin Simpson, NPCC music instructor. “I love being able to offer them. We have so many talented students, and it’s wonderful to be able to reward them for their efforts. Besides, what's better than going to class knowing you don't need to pay for it?”

Auditions will last approximately 15 minutes in Room 115 of the McDonald-Belton Building on NPCC’s South Campus. Students can reserve a space between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. by emailing Simpson at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:simpsonk@mpcc.edu" target="_blank">simpsonk@mpcc.edu</a>.

Those who audition are asked to prepare a short song, memorized or not, that demonstrates confidence and showcases vocal or instrumental talent and skills. Instrumentalists will be required to play a scale in the key of their piece as well.

Students can also sign up for Group Piano, non-major vocal and instrumental lessons and the college’s ensembles: Concert Choir, Select Choir and Jazz Band during Registration Days.

Miss Nebraska prelim night 1 winners

The Nebraska State Patrol has identified the two people killed in a Thursday crash near North Platte as Alex Sanchez, 74, of North Platte, and Kimberly McCarter, 52, of Papillion.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the call about a one-vehicle accident on the Tri-County Canal near State Farm Rd. and Box Elder Canyon Rd. came in around 1:45 p.m.

The sheriff's office said a pickup was approaching a curve near the intersection and apparently lost control before rolling and plunging into the canal.

The vehicle was almost fully submerged when first responders arrived.

Both Sanchez and McCarter were pronounced dead at the scene.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Two people are dead following a one-vehicle crash southeast of North Platte.

On Thursday at around Noon, the North Platte 911 Center received a report of a one-vehicle accident near State Farm Rd. and Box Elder Canyon Rd.

Early information indicates a vehicle drove into the Tri-County Canal.

Rescue crews from North Platte and Maxwell responded to the scene, but upon arrival found the vehicle almost fully submerged, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities confirmed that two people were dead as a result of the crash but released no further information, pending the notification of next of kin.

 </figure>By Scott Carlson-North Platte PostThe Nebraska State Patrol has identified the two people killed in a Thursday crash near North Platte as Alex Sanchez, 74, of North Platte, and Kimberly McCarter, 52, of Papillion.The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the call about a one-vehicle accident on the Tri-County Canal near State Farm Rd. and Box Elder Canyon Rd. came in around 1:45 p.m.The sheriff's office said a pickup was approaching a curve near the intersection and apparently lost control before rolling and plunging into the canal.The vehicle was almost fully submerged when first responders arrived.Both Sanchez and McCarter were pronounced dead at the scene.NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Two people are dead following a one-vehicle crash southeast of North Platte.On Thursday at around Noon, the North Platte 911 Center received a report of a one-vehicle accident near State Farm Rd. and Box Elder Canyon Rd.Early information indicates a vehicle drove into the Tri-County Canal.Rescue crews from North Platte and Maxwell responded to the scene, but upon arrival found the vehicle almost fully submerged, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.Authorities confirmed that two people were dead as a result of the crash but released no further information, pending the notification of next of kin.This is a developing story. On Wednesday, Gary Shorman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Development Officer of Eagle and President of the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation made a $1,000 donation to the Prairie Arts Center.

"The donation was a great surprise," said Holly Carlini, PAC Executive Director. "It will help towards art programming."

Each year, PAC offers a variety of summer classes that focus on projects and mediums that are new concepts to children.

The PAC is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is currently hosting the Nebraskaland Days Competetive Art Show.

Eagle Radio, Schmidt Foundation donate $1K to Prairie Arts Center

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska continues to report a small number of new COVID-19 cases, but that number crept up slightly over the past week. 

State health officials said Nebraska recorded 280 new coronavirus cases over the past week, which was up from 237 cases the week before. But as recently as April the state was reporting more cases than that in a single day. 

The state said 54 people were hospitalized with the virus across Nebraska Wednesday. That number has been below 100 since mid-May, and it is a fraction of the November peak of 987.

CHADRON – Two Chadron State College students have been selected by&nbsp;Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) to serve on its Student Advisory Board, according to Associate Professor of Counseling Dr. Tara Wilson.

Chadron State College’s Counseling program nominated two students and Carissa Munn of Lewellen, Nebraska, was selected. The Psychology program nominated the other student who was selected, Laura Otter of Akron, Colorado.

“The Counseling faculty nominated Carissa based on her observed leadership qualities and commitment to the behavioral health profession. We believe she will be an asset to the student advisory board and a strong advocate for rural behavioral health,” Wilson said.

Dr. Mary Jo Carnot, professor of Psychology, said the faculty recommended Otter because of her strong interest in behavioral health and commitment to her education.

Munn and Otter will each serve a one-year term starting in the fall with the board’s first meeting.

In an email notification of the appointments, Erin Schneider, BHECN community outreach coordinator, said the selection process was difficult because of the many qualified and talented applicants.

Schneider said goals for the 12-member Student Advisory Board include bringing together a group of students to advise on BHECN programs and initiatives that support and encourage a diverse group of Nebraska students to pursue careers in behavioral health, providing networking opportunities for students to find peers and mentors interested the behavioral health-related field, and providing students with professional board membership experience.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.-The Nebraska Attorney General's Office will convene a grand jury for an officer-involved shooting in Scottsbluff.

According to Attorney General Doug Peterson, On Monday, law enforcement was called to 2313 West Overland Drive in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for a welfare check on an individual. 

Officers entered the house at 5:26 pm.&nbsp;Daniel Ojeda, 47, was shot and a short time later was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

At the request of the Scotts Bluff County Attorney, the Attorney General’s Office has been appointed to conduct the grand jury investigation which is required by Nebraska law when an officer-involved shooting occurs.

There is no mechanism available to submit a request after this time.&nbsp; License information and Application Instructions can be found on the State Fire Marshal website at&nbsp;<a href="https://sfm.nebraska.gov/fireworks/licenses" target="_blank">https://sfm.nebraska.gov/fireworks/licenses</a>.

The changes to fireworks sales because of&nbsp;LB 152, a bill introduced by Senator Slama, and signed by Governor Ricketts on May 5, 2021 are in effect for this year.&nbsp; This bill allows for the sale of fireworks labeled as 1.4G explosives and allows some items that were previously prohibited in Nebraska.&nbsp; Nighttime parachutes and items commonly called bottle rockets can now be sold in Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wire sparklers remain prohibited in Nebraska.

Flying lantern-type devices, commonly referred to as Sky Lanterns, are still prohibited for sale, possession, and use in Nebraska per Neb. Rev. Stat. §28-1255.

The State Fire Marshal Agency encourages everyone to follow all local ordinances, to be respectful of their neighbors, and to read and follow all safety instructions when using fireworks to help ensure a happy and safe Independence Day for everyone.
