A Chadron man has been arrested for possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.&nbsp;

On June 3 Chadron Police Sgt. Young stopped a vehicle near 4th and Maple Street for having no license plates.

Young contacted 20 year-old Dylon Two Dogs. Two Dogs was the driver of the vehicle.&nbsp;

Young smelled the odor of burning marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle.

"Sgt. Young searched the vehicle, locating less than one ounce of suspected marijuana and a suspected pipe containing methamphetamine residue," Chadron Police Chief Richard Hickstein said. "Sgt. Young field tested the suspected drugs and received a positive reaction for marijuana and methamphetamine."

Two Dogs was arrested for possession of methamphetamine (Class IV Felony), driving under suspension (Class III Misdemeanor) and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana (Infraction). 

Two Dogs was transported to the Dawes County Jail. Bond was set at 10% of $10,000.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Social media posts are buzzing in the North Platte area about people hearing suspicious calls for help in different areas of the city.

Speculation on Facebook has ranged from someone trying to lure people out of their homes, to someone in actual need of help.

Many posts have made reference to people seeing a suspicious black vehicle driving slowly, followed by calls for help.

North Platte police said they did receive one call regarding the situation.

Police said on Monday at around 11:32 p.m. officers responded to the 800 block of W. 6th St. on the report of suspicious activity.

It was reported that a female subject could be heard calling for help in the area, possibly coming from a vacant house.

Police said officers checked the house and found it to be secured. Officers did not hear any calls for help while in the area and the report did not include any type of vehicle.

While it's unclear what the suspicious calls for help may have been, police want to remind citizens to report anything that seems suspicious to law enforcement and they will investigate.&nbsp;

Police do not believe there is any imminent danger to the public.

Nebraska Community Foundation once again encourages small town libraries to apply for grants through the Kreutz Bennett Donor-Advised Fund, which has awarded more than $665,000 to libraries in the last nine years.

Grants will be made to libraries located in communities with populations below 3,000. There are three different areas of support available. Each grant requires a one-to-one match in local funding.

The Kreutz Bennett Donor-Advised Fund Advisory Committee encourages all eligible, unaccredited libraries to view the recently updated grant guidelines. A number of additional activities and expenses are now eligible for funding through a “Planning for Accreditation Grant.”

Eligible activities will enhance or create community education and outreach programs or services. Preference will be given to programs or services that benefit low-income individuals or families, new Americans or underserved populations. Existing or new programs may be considered.

Eligible activities include construction of a new facility or rehabilitation or expansion of an existing facility. Preference will be given to rehabilitation of historic libraries and to projects with a long-term sustainability plan.

Grant applications are simple to complete. A short-form proposal is due October 1, 2021, and a full proposal is due in January 2022. Due to the effort’s tremendous success over the past decade, the Fund is close to spending down available money. This could be the last year the opportunity is available. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A lawsuit challenging Nebraska’s two-tiered system for Medicaid expansion is on hold now that state officials have committed to giving all participants the same slate of benefits. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports that Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong granted a motion to pause legal proceedings until Oct. 4. That's the first business day after everyone enrolled in Medicaid expansion is to get coverage for dental, vision, and over-the-counter medications. 

Nebraska Appleseed, the Lincoln-based advocacy group that filed the case, and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, which administers the state Medicaid program, filed the motion. 

State officials recently announced they would abandon plans for a limited tier of coverage for most Medicaid expansion patients.

Medicaid lawsuit paused as Nebraska expands benefits

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man has died in a shootout with police in western Nebraska following an hours-long standoff at a Scottsbluff home. 

Scottsbluff police said officers were called to the home around noon Monday for reports of a man with a gun threatening to harm himself or others. 

Police said officers were held at bay outside the home for nearly six hours as attempts to negotiate with the man failed. Police say when a team of officers entered the home, the man fired at them and they returned fire, fatally shooting the man. 

Police have not released the 47-year-old man's name or the names of the officers involved.

The event begins at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until the food is gone.

This will be an open-air, drive-through event. Patrons will drive their vehicles through and volunteers will bring boxed food to patrons.

Those attending are asked to begin near the tennis courts on the east of the parking lot and drive up to the gate on the northwest corner of the football stadium, then down the alley between the school building and the football field. Patrons will exit onto A St.

It's expected that 325 households will be served.

LINCOLN, Neb. – A master plan is being developed for the Fort Kearny State Recreation Area and State Historical Park; and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking public input.

The proposed plan strikes a balance between historic preservation and recreation opportunities for current and future visitors. The public is invited to an in-person open house from 5:30-7 p.m. June 22 in the Event Room at the Archway in Kearney.

The open house will have several stations where the public can provide input on future development of these two park areas. A welcome packet, with information and supplies to participate, will be provided.

Located 6 miles south of Kearney, abutted by the Platte River and Interstate 80 corridor, these two sites offer many recreational opportunities. The 243-acre state recreation area offers swimming, fishing, biking, hiking, camping, non-powered boating, Frisbee golf, and Sandhill crane viewing along the hike-bike trail bridges. Public input sought on proposed Fort Kearny master plan

McCook, Neb.-An Iowa man will spend the next 10 to 12 years in prison for assaulting two McCook police officers and stealing a squad car.

On March 20, authorities in Cedar Rapids, Iowa notified McCook police that a stolen vehicle had been tracked to that area.

Officers located the vehicle and its driver, Cornelius Perry, 32, of Cedar Rapids.

Police said when officers attempted to take Perry into custody, he resisted, assaulting two officers, and drove off in one of the patrol vehicles.

Perry was apprehended a short time later and taken into custody.

Perry later pleaded guilty to two counts of 3rd-degree assault of an officer, theft by unlawful taking, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and flight to avoid arrest.

On Monday, Perry appeared in Red Willow County District Court before Judge David Dearborn.

Dearborn sentenced Perry to ten to twelve years total in the Nebraska Department of Corrections.

He was given credit for 80 days already served.

Iowa man gets up to 12 years for stealing McCook squad car, assaulting officers

LYONS, Neb. -- Homeownership remains out of reach for many hard-working Nebraska families because of stagnant wages and lack of access to traditional mortgages. Kim Preston, rural enterprise assistance project director at the Center for Rural Affairs, said their new loan program aims to provide minority communities and low- and middle-income families an alternative path to buying or repairing a house. She pointed out a lot of people say they want to relocate to small communities, to raise a family or to bring their families back to the place where they grew up. "A lot of times, the barrier is homeownership," Preston explained. "The housing supply isn't there, the housing supply might need some rehab or some tender loving care. Or the banks aren't able to assist with that small dollar product, and that's the niche we aim to fill." According to police, Tatiana Porter-Zamudio, 17 was last seen by her family leaving her Lexington home with friends and has not been heard from since.

of encountering ticks.  Tick season generally runs between April and
September in Nebraska but tends to peak in May and June.

According to Nebraska Department of
Agriculture, the most common tick species found in Nebraska are the
American dog tick (wood tick), lone star tick, and the Deer tick.
Based on syndromic surveillance, Nebraska has seen two times the
number of emergency room visits for tick bites compared to this time
in previous years. 


To prevent tick bites, WCDHD is
recommending everyone follow the below CDC guidance on tick bite
prevention:

Health officials report uptick in tick bites in Nebraska

CHADRON, Neb. — Among the highlights of Chadron State Park’s centennial celebration June 11-12 will be the opening of its new indoor archery and pellet gun range. The grand opening and ribbon cutting is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12.

Situated between the park’s office and Trading Post activities center, the 3,100-square-foot building will include both 3-D and bulls-eye archery targets, and a five-station pellet gun range with an automated interactive shooting gallery. The facility has a hunting theme with many of the targets simulating game animals of northwestern Nebraska. It is designed to entertain and challenge a wide range of ages and skill levels.

The range has a collection of new compound bows for use, or visitors may bring their own. Usage of the pellet range is limited to the park’s guns, which are powered to match the gallery’s targets.

A fee-based system, which charges visitors to use the shooting complex, will help fund its operation. Range safety officers will be on site to assist visitors. It will be open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. throughout the summer.

In recent years, the park also has developed an outdoor archery range with two moveable sight-in targets, and a range of nine other stations with an assortment of 3-D targets and bullseyes at various distances. That course, which is located in the southwestern portion of the park, is open during daylight and is free to users.

Nebraska Park Entry permits, which are required for vehicles entering the premises, may be purchased by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://outdoornebraska.org/" target="_blank">outdoornebraska.org</a>, the park’s office or other vendors statewide.

Archery, pellet gun range opening during Chadron State Park celebration

A mountain lion was struck by a vehicle on June 5 outside of Alliance.&nbsp;

"A young male mountain lion was killed by a vehicle late Saturday evening near Alliance,"&nbsp;Nebraska Game and Parks Commission&nbsp;Furbearer/Carnivore Program Manager&nbsp;Sam Wilson said.&nbsp;

The accident happened a few miles west of Alliance on Otoe Road.&nbsp;

"It was a dispersing aged male that was not marked as part of our research project on mountain lions in the region," Wilson said.&nbsp;

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.&nbsp;

State Sen. Tom Brewer, of Gordon, says a series of medical tests this spring revealed that his hairy cell leukemia has returned, and he will need chemotherapy to treat it. 

Gordon says he plans to take some time off from his duties for treatment and will have to cancel or reschedule some of his upcoming events. 

Brewer disclosed his initial diagnosis of cancer in 2014 when he was a Republican U.S. House candidate in Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District. 

Hairy cell leukemia is a rare, slow-growing cancer that’s generally treatable and has a high survival rate.

Nebraska state senator says rare leukemia has returned

NORTH PLATTE-After a brief hiatus, Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza in North Platte will be reopening under new ownership.

Patrick and Caitlyn Jacobson along with Mitchell and Charlotte Wagner have purchased the North Platte franchise.

Patrick Jacobson said Papa Murphy's North Platte will be all about the family.

"We're family people and we want to bring the family appeal to Papa Murphy's," said Jacobson.

Jacobson said he's excited to be part of the growth North Platte is currently experiencing.

"We believe in North Platte and we're looking forward to the growth of the city and being a part of that," said Jacobson.

The North Platte location closed its doors several months ago and has been missed by residents, according to Jacobson.

"Papa Muphy's is the only take-and-bake pizza store and it's very convenient for families and individuals who are on the go," said Jacobson. "We're excited to offer that to North Platte again."

Jacobson says they plan to have the business open before Labor Day, but it could be October at the latest.

"We are completely remodeling the store and giving it a fresh look," said Jacobson.

According to Jacobson, the interior of the store will be completely remodeled from countertops to the walls.

Mitchell Wagner and his family were the original owners of the North Platte store. They also operate Quiznos and Wicked Fast in North Platte.

Papa Murphy's has 1,300 locations in the United States, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. It is the fifth-largest pizza franchise in the nation.

The North Platte Public Library will host Humanities Nebraska speakers, Sarah Baker Hansen and Matthew Hansen this Friday, June 11th.&nbsp; 

Their program is titled “The Better Half: Nebraska’s Hidden Treasures.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sarah grew up in suburban Omaha. Husband Matthew came from Red Cloud, population 1,000. 

In their book, “The Better Half,” they together explored the state from border to border. The book includes two dozen columns and restaurant stories, as well as dozens of other details on things to do, see, eat and drink in Nebraska. 

The Hansens speak about the experience of rediscovering their own home state; encouraging other Nebraskans to do the same is at the heart of their presentation. The Hansens will also talk about Nebraska’s rural-urban divide, and what can unite us.

Funding for this program is provided by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment in addition to funding by the Friends of the North Platte Public Library.&nbsp;

RAPID CITY, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in South Dakota say an inmate who escaped from a minimum-security prison in Rapid City in November is back in custody.

 The Rapid City Journal reports Keith Apple was arrested Tuesday in Rapid City. 

Authorities say he left the Rapid City Community Work Center without authorization on Nov. 7. Apple is serving three years for unauthorized ingestion of a controlled substance from Pennington County. 

Apple is being held in the Pennington County Jail. Apple faces charges of second-degree escape, punishable by up to five years in prison, authorities said.

LYONS — Cover crops are a conservation practice with wide ranging benefits, from improving soil health to protecting water quality. Many farmers who planted fall cover crops are now eligible for a discount on their crop insurance premium, thanks to a new program announced June 1.

The Pandemic Cover Crop Program (PCCP), available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency, offers a discount of $5 per acre on a farmer’s 2021 crop insurance premium, but no more than the full premium price.

To be eligible, a producer must report their fall cover crops to the Farm Service Agency no later than June 15. The Report of Acreage form (FSA-578) will require information such as cover crop variety, number of acres, planting dates, and irrigation practices. Once the report has been submitted, eligible farmers will be automatically enrolled and see the discount reflected on their premium later in the year.

“Farmers should be mindful that the June 15 deadline is a month before the July 15 acreage reporting deadline they are familiar with for federal crop insurance,” said Kate Hansen, policy associate for the Center for Rural Affairs.

The program is available nationwide for most federal crop insurance policies. For producers in states with existing cover crop insurance incentives, such as Iowa, PCCP will provide an additional benefit. The discount is not available for policies such as Whole Farm Revenue Protection or Enhanced Coverage Option.

“This opportunity is a win-win for both farmers and for our natural resources,” Hansen said. “It’s great to see farmers who planted cover crops last fall rewarded for their voluntary efforts.”

Cover crop discount available for federal crop insurance

LINCOLN, Neb. – Consider your motivations on why you enjoy fishing. Is it to catch a meal, compete for the largest fish, get away from life’s stresses or to be with friends?

To faithfully mentor a new angler, whether they be young or old, one probably should start by asking why the angler wants to fish. The angler might have some experience but still be seeking to learn. From there, add the time, place and equipment necessary to have enjoyable fishing trips together.

Keep it simple. The first dabblings into any new hobby should be about discovering the basics. With fishing, this means to keep the equipment simple and effective. Fancy gear and tackle tend to need an experienced touch and can be intimidating to learn. First experiences should be comfortable and successful. Your friend’s memory of a beautiful sunset and any fish caught will hook them on angling for life.

Plan the fishing trip location for comfort and success. If the person is new to fishing, a short fishing trip to a park-like setting is perfect. City park ponds can be found across Nebraska that include groomed shorelines, restrooms and nearby services, with most of these containing plentiful bluegill, bass and catfish. The Nebraska Fishing Guide’s Public Fishing Areas section lists these special locations as Family Friendly Lakes. If your mentee is a little more experienced and wanting to learn fly-fishing, for instance, the groomed shorelines of park ponds are ideal casting practice locations, and bluegill are very susceptible to many types of artificial flies.

It is important the fishing equipment you introduce your friend to is good quality and complements the fishing experience. If a beginning angler is having trouble with a bad fishing rod and reel, he or she will be frustrated. The friend will not know if it’s equipment failure or the technique. The same is true if the equipment is complicated to use. Start a beginning angler with a push-button spin-casting reel and move more experienced anglers into spinning reels when it is appropriate. Is it to catch a meal, compete for the largest fish, get away from life’s stresses or to be with friends?To faithfully mentor a new angler, whether they be young or old, one probably should start by asking why the angler wants to fish. The angler might have some experience but still be seeking to learn. From there, add the time, place and equipment necessary to have enjoyable fishing trips together.Keep it simple. The first dabblings into any new hobby should be about discovering the basics. With fishing, this means to keep the equipment simple and effective. Fancy gear and tackle tend to need an experienced touch and can be intimidating to learn. First experiences should be comfortable and successful. Your friend’s memory of a beautiful sunset and any fish caught will hook them on angling for life.Plan the fishing trip location for comfort and success. If the person is new to fishing, a short fishing trip to a park-like setting is perfect. City park ponds can be found across Nebraska that include groomed shorelines, restrooms and nearby services, with most of these containing plentiful bluegill, bass and catfish. Key to mentoring new angler: Keep it simple

McCook, Neb.-Police in McCook continue their search for two suspects following an armed robbery.

At around 4:59 a.m. on June 3, officers responded to the report of an armed robbery.

Police said a female reported she was walking northbound on East 5th St. when she was approached by two male subjects at the intersection of East I and East 5th Streets.

The victim told police one of the males questioned her about what was in her purse, then brandished a knife and forcefully took it.

Police said both subjects then fled on foot traveling eastbound on East 5th St.

Police describe the first suspect as a black male in his late teens or early twenties, approximately five feet six inches tall with a thin build. The suspect had no visible facial hair and was wearing a bright blue hooded jacket.&nbsp;

The second suspect was described as a black male in his late teens or early twenties, approximately five feet 11 inches tall with no visible facial hair. He was wearing a dark t-shirt and blue jeans.

Police are asking residents in the area to check surveillance footage for any possible evidence.&nbsp;

Tickets for the 2021 North Platte Community College raffle pickup, a burnt orange 1955 Chevy stepside short box, go on sale June 13.

They will be sold everywhere the vehicle is displayed, at all Mid-Plains Community College campuses and at various area businesses.

The pickup will make its first public appearance at the NEBRASKAland Days Antique Car Show and Parade from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 18 in Memorial Park in North Platte.

The Chevy is the 16th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

The students disassembled it – essentially reducing it down to a shell. They then sandblasted the body and frame to bare metal.

From there, they embarked on the long and challenging process of transforming the vehicle into a work of art.&nbsp;The project required them to study and merge traditional and modern engineering and technology and provided them with real-world experience.

The pickup features a 6.0-liter V8 engine, 4L80E performance transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, air conditioning, cruise control and custom bed.

The pickup will tour the state throughout the summer, making appearances at car shows, parades and cruise night events. A schedule will be posted at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/community/npcc-classic-car-projects/car-raffle" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/community/npcc-classic-car-projects/car-raffle</a>.&nbsp;

A total of 10,000 raffle tickets will be offered at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds will be used for scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

A number of businesses, organizations and individuals have offered to sell tickets. In North Platte, those include: Don’s Motor Company, Cohagen Battery Store, Levander’s Body Shop, Grandma’s Memories Antiques and Collectibles, Isabelle’s Auction House, A.J. Janas, Pat Smith, Jody’s Auto Sales and LKQ Corporation.

The Yellow Rose Lounge and Herrick Auto and Marine, in Curtis; Top Notch Auto and Towing and Moe’s Graphics, in Gothenburg; Kent Silvester, in Imperial, and Neil Noel, in Beaver City, will also have tickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;
