LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for a 2022 mountain lion hunting season, as well as a 2021 river otter harvest season, at its June 11 meeting in Chadron.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Mountain time at Chadron State Park’s Central Building, 15951 U.S. Hwy. 385.

Staff will recommend a mountain lion season in the Pine Ridge, identical to the 2021 season, that would have a maximum harvest of four mountain lions, with a sublimit of two females. The objective is to allow a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that allows the population to remain resilient and healthy while limiting future growth or moderately reducing numbers.

The Commission also will consider adopting a Nebraska River Otter Management Plan. The goal of the plan would be to maintain resilient, healthy and socially acceptable river otter populations that are in balance with available habitat and other wildlife species. Changes to Commission orders and regulations will be proposed to implement a harvest season that would allow the trapping of river otters. The proposed season would be Nov. 1, 2021 through Feb. 28, 2022, or close earlier once 75 otters have been harvested.

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Arizona man following the discovery of 55 pounds of cocaine in a vehicle in Cozad.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. Thursday when a trooper contacted a motorist at the Cozad interchange of Interstate 80.

 During the encounter, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity.

Troopers searched the vehicle and found 55 pounds of cocaine hidden in floor compartments of the vehicle. There was also a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was accompanied by an adult female passenger and a small child.

The driver, Donovan Grange, 31, of Scottsdale, Arizona, was arrested for possession of more than 140 grams of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, child abuse/neglect, and no drug tax stamp. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail. The female passenger was released with the child.&nbsp;

Two Hershey teens are competing for two different state titles. 

Addilyn Wilson, Miss Swedish Days Outstanding Teen, and Calie Troyer, Miss Rodeo Ogallala Round-Up Queen will be competing for state titles in the next two weeks. 

Addilyn’s competition, Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen,  kicks off on June 10th at the North Platte High School Performing Arts Center with the preliminary competition, in connection with the Miss Nebraska Competition.&nbsp; Finals night and the crowning will be Saturday the 12th. 

Calie will start competition for Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska on June 13th at the Wild West Arena with Horsemanship. The crowning of the new rodeo queen will be June 16th at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

Both girls will be juniors at Hershey High School. 

Addilyn is the daughter of Francis and Andrea Wilson of Hershey.

 Calie is the daughter of Kyle and Yvette Troyer of Hershey.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Join the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in celebrating the parks system centennial year with a two-day birthday bash June 11-12 at Chadron State Park.

Game and Parks Director Jim Douglas, joined by Nebraska Lt. Gov. Mike Foley, U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, and Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation Chairman Jim Abel will welcome guests to the celebration during an 11 a.m. ceremony Saturday at the sports field.

“State lawmakers in 1921 recognized the value of creating our first state park at Chadron,” Douglas said. “We have a lot to celebrate about the benefits that we receive from Nebraska state parks. Our state parks are special places where people can get in touch with nature, enjoy healthy activities, and gather with their families and friends to make lasting memories. Our state parks add to our overall quality of life and strengthen our economy.”

“We look forward to celebrating Nebraska’s great state park system with this signature event,” said Jim Swenson, Parks Division administrator. “Over the past 100 years, our state park system has grown to 76 parks that are top destinations for Nebraskans and visitors because of their breathtaking landscapes and the great diversity of recreational opportunities.”

Highlights will include a historical plaque dedication at 9 a.m. Saturday outside the main office overlooking the pond; the grand opening of the new Chadron State Park Shooting Complex at 10 a.m. at the main picnic area; and laser light shows by Laser Spectacles at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the sports field. Light show attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets as seating is limited.

Recreation opportunities won’t be lacking at the signature event either.

The annual Run for the Hills foot race (a 1-mile, 5k or 10k run across the rugged Pine Ridge); Regatta Race; bounce house; and treasure dive promise to keep people of all ages busy.

Other activities will include stagecoach rides, free paddleboat rides, free archery and pellet gun shooting, nature and blacksmithing displays, and a lunch that includes bison sloppy joes, chips, beans and a drink for 100 cents — one penny for each year since the park was established.

Among the displays and vendors will be Game and Parks’ trailers showcasing wildlife, Nebraska park history, and taxidermy mounts confiscated because of game violations.

Two BOW shooting sports events scheduled in June

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program has two shooting sports events in June: Trap Shooting Series at Platte River State Park and Steel Plate Challenge at the Weeping Water Gun Club.

Learn the basics in the beginner-level Trap Shooting Series at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex on June 16, 23 and 30. Equipment will be provided.

Test your shooting skills at the Steel Plate Challenge on June 12. This is a two-gun match, requiring a .22 caliber rifle and a .22 caliber handgun, open to women 18 years and older.

Join the centennial birthday bash at Chadron on June 11-12

NORTH PLATTE-A long-standing staple of the
NEBRASKAland DAYS Celebration is being moved to a new home. The Pork
Breakfast, one of the most popular of the food events during the
festival is being moved to the First United Methodist Church with
the Church’s membership at the helm. It will be held on June 19th
at 7 am as previously scheduled.


“There were a couple of
factors at play in this decision, but the most important was the
progress being made at the Mall,” said Executive Director David
Fudge. “When the City Council passed the mall plan on final reading
this past Tuesday, the work started. We’re as excited for this
redevelopment as the rest of the community. But it necessitated a
change to our plans.”


The First United Methodist
Church is no stranger to hosting large community events, as they
annually host a Trunk or Treat event around halloween and a Holiday
Craft Fair in early December. They feed large crowds for both events.


"We are excited to
support the Nebraskaland Days festival in such a practical way,”
said Pastor Douglas Delp of First United Methodist Church. “We love
serving people who are hungry as an expression of our mission in the
community. It's time for some great food with family and friends at
the Pork Breakfast."


As in the past, there will be
both sit-down and drive-through options available for people who
attend the event. Tickets already purchased for the event are valid
for the new location. Advance tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased
at the NEBRASKAland DAYS Office. Tickets will also be available at
the Church on the day of the event.

“Decades of consolidation in meatpacking has significantly limited the options that producers have to market their cattle and has created a situation where one segment of the beef industry has near-total control over the entire market,” wrote the Governors in their letter. &nbsp;“As a result, the consistently high prices realized on the boxed beef side are not being reflected on the producer side, forcing consumers to pay a premium for beef while threatening many of our producers with the loss of their business.”

NORTH PLATTE-A North Platte man is in jail after police say he burglarized a home and left something important behind.

According to police, on Wednesday at around 5:46 a.m., officers responded to the report of a possible burglary in the 1600 block of West 2nd St.

Officers made contact with the victim who said she awoke to the sound of footsteps in her house and found lights turned on that had not been on when she went to bed.

The victim told police she then observed Destin Hewitt, 21, standing next to a vehicle in her driveway. The victim told police she told Hewitt to leave the property, which he did.

Police said further investigation revealed that two window screens had been removed from the home and one window was open.

Additionally, police said it was discovered that numerous prescription medications were missing and a cell phone was found in the house that did not belong to the victim. The cell phone was eventually identified as Hewitt's.

Officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Hewitt for burglary.

At around 1:10 p.m., police said Hewitt flagged down an officer to report that his cell phone was missing.

Police said the officer informed Hewitt that the phone had been found at the scene of a burglary and placed him under arrest.

A search of Hewitt led to the discovery of several prescription pills, similar to those that had been reported missing from the residence.

Hewitt was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center on suspicion of burglary and possession of a controlled substance.

Gov. Ricketts announces Stop 30x30 town hall in Alliance

LINCOLN, Neb. – While many Nebraska boaters are eager to enjoy a summer day on the lake, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges them to be wary of a nasty hitchhiker: the zebra mussel.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Game and Parks watercraft inspectors found two boats with zebra mussels attached attempting to launch. Each boat was inspected and not allowed to launch with viable zebra mussels. Watercraft inspectors are present throughout the state this summer at various water bodies to prevent the spread of invasive species.

Zebra mussels can live up to two weeks out of water and young zebra mussels – or veligers – are invisible to the naked eye and can be spread through any water left undrained. Boaters should clean all visible plants, mud, or animals, drain all water within the boat, including the motor, and dry their boat for five days before going to another water body.

Game and Parks regulations require anglers, hunters and boaters conduct clean, drain and dry procedures before leaving a water body; they also are not allowed to arrive at a new one with any water from another water body.

“Frankly, we need the public’s help this summer,” said Kristopher Stahr, Game and Parks aquatic invasive species program manager. “Once established, zebra mussels can be devastating to a water body and prevention is the best tool we have. Surrounding states have been greatly impacted by zebra mussel invasions, and we want to keep Nebraska waters invasive-free, now and for future generations.”

A zebra mussel is a highly invasive aquatic species that looks like a D-shaped clam, with alternating light and dark bands. Most zebra mussels are less than an inch long. They form dense colonies and filter large quantities of plankton from water, decreasing the food supply for native species.

In addition, these mussels pollute swimming areas with sharp shells and clog water intake pipes. The Missouri River has an existing zebra mussel population along its entire length downstream of Gavins Point Dam. Lewis and Clark Lake, Lake Yankton and the Offutt Base Lake are the only other confirmed Nebraska waters that have established zebra mussel populations.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State officials are dropping plans for a two-tier system to cover voter-approved Medicaid expansion in Nebraska. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports state officials announced Tuesday that all Nebraskans covered by the expansion will get a full range of benefits starting Oct. 1. 

Gov. Pete Ricketts' administration had sought to offer a two-tier system that would include a “basic” plan covering physical and behavioral health care services and a “prime” plan that would also cover dental, vision and over-the-counter drugs. 

The Trump administration approved Ricketts’ two-tier plan last year, prompting a lawsuit by advocacy group Nebraska Appleseed. But President Joe Biden’s administration made clear early this year that it would not approve the system.

The North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team will accept pre-orders for its Sweet Saloon cinnamon rolls beginning next week.

The Sweet Saloon takes place every year during NEBRASKAland Days. Athletes, coaches and volunteers spend days making “melt-in-your-mouth” cinnamon rolls, the proceeds from which go toward NPCC volleyball scholarships.

“We are excited to be able to do Sweet Saloon this year,” said Alexa McCall, NPCC Knights head volleyball coach. “The community support that the volleyball program receives through this fundraiser is always amazing, and we are very thankful. It is a fun time for the girls to be out in the community and learn about North Platte. We would like to extend a special thank you to Hiland Dairy for donating products to help us and also to the pickup locations for working with us as well.”

While the actual event is June 15-17, pre-orders can be placed starting June 8. It’s recommended that people call in or order online to ensure that rolls are available. Pre-orders can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/SweetSaloon</a>&nbsp;and (308) 535-3696 up until noon the day before the rolls are needed.

The cost is $18 per dozen. Half dozen orders will also be accepted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rolls can be picked up at McDaid Elementary, the Do-It Center, Westfield Pharmacy, Sports Shoppe and the Welcome Center on NPCC’s South Campus.

Sweet Saloon pre-orders begin June 8

NCF expanded its Hometown Interns program for 2021 following the success of 2020’s group of 13 interns. The expansion offers more opportunities for ambitious young Nebraskans to return to their hometowns and further the mission of their local NCF affiliated fund. This program helps young people feel more connected to their hometowns, hone job relevant skills and network with adults and job creators in the area. Importantly, it’s allowing them to envision a bright future right in the comfort of their own hometown.

The 2020 class of interns brought a multitude of skills to their communities, assisting with promoting local arts, sharing success stories, mapping community assets and much more.

“In all instances, the students made considerable impacts on their affiliated funds and their hometowns. Meanwhile intern supervisors and other local volunteers learned that young Nebraskans care deeply about their communities and are just waiting for an invitation to share their visions for the future,” said NCF President and CEO Jeff Yost. “We are thrilled to invite even more young Nebraskans home this summer to continue this inspiring community-building initiative.”

Hometown Interns will be working with local volunteer leaders on a variety of projects customized to the community they live in and the interests and skill sets of the interns. While the specific tasks and projects will vary from one Hometown Internship to another, NCF will provide numerous opportunities for interns to connect with one another throughout the summer to give them space to learn from each other, share ideas and foster appreciation for their hometowns while contributing to community development efforts at the local and statewide level.

“My work last year as a Hometown Intern was eye-opening,” said Miranda Shreves, who will serve as one of two Hometown Intern Coordinators this year. “I hope this year’s class gains the same perspective and more.”

Hometown Intern program partners include University of Nebraska Extension; Nebraska Honors; the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Agricultural Leadership, Education &amp; Communication program; and the Center for Civic Engagement.
