Kearney, Neb.-Drivers of electric vehicles will soon be able to add Kearney to their list of available charging areas for their cars.

Officials in Kearney will unveil four new electric vehicle charging stations on Friday.

The charging stations are located near the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Kearney (level II charging), near Cunningham's on the Lake (level II charging), and two fast-charging stations on the campus of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The project is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust which is funded by proceeds from the Nebraska Lottery. The Trust has awarded more than $405 million to conservation projects in Nebraska.

Kearney to unveil electric vehicle charging stations

As a person who has been known to lose battles with grill fires, the thought of getting anywhere near a wildfire is terrifying. But North Platte native Mark Hooper jumps right into them, literally.

After fighting wildfires as a wildland firefighter, Hooper joined a Hotshots crew earlier this year.&nbsp; 

According to the US Forest Service, Hotshot crews were first established in Southern California in the late 1940s on the Cleveland and Angeles National Forests. They were called “Hotshot” crews because they worked on the hottest part of wildfires.

The U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, state and county agencies sponsor more than 100 Interagency Hotshots Crews, with most located in the western United States.

Hotshots are considered the special forces of firefighting.

Hooper and his crew were recently dispatched to a nasty wildfire in an unknown location in Nevada.

Hooper told The Post he and his crew were flown by helicopter to a fire in Nevada and have been sleeping near the fire line, moving as they progress in the battle.

The Post will talk with Hooper about his experiences on an upcoming podcast episode.

In the meantime, send him and his crew thoughts, prayers, good vibes, or whatever else may provide them with safety.

Hooper attended Maxwell Public Schools and is also a renowned local Mixed Martial Arts fighter.

North Platte native fights wildfires as Hotshots elite firefighter

North Platte-A fairly large crowd gathered at City Hall in North Platte for the monthly city council meeting.

The attraction to the meeting was the final reading of an amendment to allow for an occupational tax and the creation of an Employment Enhancement Area, or EEA, for the proposed North Platte Mall redevelopment.

The amendment would allow for the addition of a 1.9% tax that will only be paid by those who choose to shop at the mall.

Councilmember Ed Reiker spoke right after the reading of the amendment and stated that he felt it was important for him to clarify his reasons for his previous votes against the creations of an EEA and Tax Increment Financing, or TIF, for the mall, even after voicing his support for the project.

"Number one, I really don't believe this application for TIF and EEA falls within the purview of government," said Rieker.

"To take public funds, or in this case to secure a tax on a transaction, then remit this collection back to a private entity for either enhanced profitability or fiscal integrity impinges on the difference between private enterprise and government," said Rieker.

Rieker acknowledged that while it was legal, that doesn't make it the right thing to do and said it harms the competition by subsidizing the applicant, in this case, Rev Development.

Councilmember Donna Tryon echoed Rieker's comments saying she hoped the project was successful but it is a private enterprise that should stand on its own merits.

"It's not the role of government to solve our shopping needs," said Tryon.

Tryon said she campaigned on smaller government and not one of her constituents told her they wanted to pay more taxes.

Tryon cautioned the public on depending on the government to do for us.

"It's trickling down and we have a chance to stop it in our own community," said Tryon.

Next to speak was councilmember Pete Volz.

"We throw the term government around like it is a four-letter word, a lot of times it is, but we are the government right here in this case today in this council chamber," said Volz.

"Government is not turning this into a Socialistic endeavor, it is facilitating a means to an end," said Volz. "This is not government intervention."

Volz said dictating to the community what needs to be done is government intervention, the council is facilitating a means to achieve an end.

Volz noted his appreciation for his fellow councilmembers' opinions but stated they had a philosophical difference in government.

A member of the community attempted to speak and Mayor Brandon Kelliher reminded those in attendance that it was not a public meeting.

Councilmember Tryon asked if someone could be allowed to speak if they wanted to and had contacted the Mayor. Mayor Kelliher said he would make an exception even though the rules prohibited it.

Chuck Matson of North Platte then spoke and said there was plenty of time to discuss the amount of money being spent through TIF and voiced his support for the council members taking a stand against the project.

Local banker and President of the North Platte Redevelopment Authority Mike Jacobson was next to speak.

"I think that all but one of the people sitting behind me is in favor of the project and the most of the council has made their decision on how they want to vote, I think it's important that those that are viewers that are watching on TV understand a couple of issues," said Jacobson.

Jacobson explained that TIF starts out with a base land value and none of that tax value goes away and stays on the tax rolls.

"Those dollars that are being collected on that mall property today in property taxes will continue going to the taxing authorities even with the approval of TIF," said Jacobson.

Jacobson said the only thing that will be redirected for up to 15 years is the incremental increases that occur as a result of this project moving forward.

"The developers have proven and made it clear that this project is not moving forward without the approval of TIF and EEA," said Jacobson.

Jacobson said this prevents the creation of new taxes if the developers just hang onto the property, like the previous owner, losing tenants and forcing them to find a different use for it.

"If that's what we want for our town, vote no, " said Jacobson. "It's easy to say I support something but if I'm not willing to bring forward the funding mechanism to make it happen then I'm not for it, I don't care how you justify it you're not for it," said Jacobson.

Jacobson also reminded the council that EEA is a voluntary tax that will only be paid if you choose to shop at the mall.

Jacobson said many Downtown merchants and competitors of the mall are for the project.

"A rising tide lifts all boats," said Jacobson. "If we can bring more shoppers to North Platte they are going to shop at all of our merchants, this is a no-brainer," said Jacobson.

After a brief discussion, Mayor Kelliher called for the question, and the final reading of the amendment passed with a 4-3 vote.

Council members Tryon, Rieker, and Mark Woods voted no.

The crowd erupted in applause with the passing of the amendment.

The mall renovation projection is now closer to reality with the final approval of TIF being the final hurdle.

North Platte council gives final approval to North Platte Mall EEA

NORTH PLATTE-If you're from around this area you know what Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park or Scout's Rest Ranch is. It's the Christmas tradition with the family, it's the amazing mansion, the beautiful barn, the bison, the green grass and on and on. But, what do you really know about Buffalo Bill Ranch SHP?

We came across this information from Nebraska State Historical Parks and we learned a lot, so we thought you might too.

Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, known as Scout's Rest Ranch, is a living history state park located west of North Platte.

 The ranch was established in 1878 with an initial purchase of 160 acres south of the Union Pacific tracks by William (Buffalo Bill) Cody. 

The 4,000-acre ranch was sold in 1911 and has been under the management of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission since 1964. 

The 25-acre historic state park, deemed a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is open weekdays from April to October. 

The house and outbuildings can be toured, including a museum documenting Cody’s life from a Pony Express rider to his Wild West shows.

At Christmas time, the mansion is decorated by local groups, individuals and organizations and can be toured by the public for a fee. The tours are complete with carolers, roasted chestnut, cider, and cookies.

In 1877 Cody contacted Major Frank North, the leader of the Pawnee Scouts, who was living in Sidney, Nebraska. Cody founded the Cody-North Partnership with the North brothers to form a cattle business. North found land along the Dismal River, 65 miles north of North Platte, on which cattle could graze and a ranch could be built. 

Cody continued touring his “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” show while North purchased cattle at the north end of the Texas cattle trail, near Ogallala, Nebraska. 

North hired cowboys to help operate the ranch while Cody was on tour.

The facts about Buffalo Bill Ranch in North Platte

Last week, the Legislature wrapped up one of its most productive sessions in history.&nbsp; With almost 700 bills under consideration, Senators and I successfully worked together to control spending growth, deliver tax relief, invest in broadband infrastructure, and expand educational opportunities among several other key priorities.&nbsp; Here are a few of the highlights from an historic legislative session that helped move our state forward the Nebraska way.

Controlling Spending:&nbsp;The next two-year budget that Senators and I agreed to limits spending growth to 2.4%. &nbsp;The four biennial budgets I have worked on with the Legislature have an average annual growth rate of less than 2.5%.&nbsp; Thanks to efforts to control state spending, we delivered over $1.8 billion in tax relief to Nebraskans over the next two years.&nbsp; That’s the greatest amount of tax relief any Legislature has delivered in at least a quarter-century—and likely the largest amount in the history of the State of Nebraska.&nbsp; This represents an average of 18.5% of the State’s budget going to tax relief over the next two years.

Property Tax Relief:&nbsp;Property tax relief made up the vast majority of the relief this session.&nbsp; Together, the Legislature and I delivered an estimated $1.7 billion in property tax relief over the next two years.&nbsp; This includes over $433 million each year through the new refundable income tax credit, which was passed into law in 2020. &nbsp;This is over triple the $125 million in tax credits provided this year, which was the program’s first year.&nbsp; We also increased the Property Tax Credit Relief Fund as well as funding for the Homestead Exemption.

And More Tax Relief:&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to property tax relief, Senators and I agreed on five other important measures. &nbsp;We eliminated taxes on military retirement income as well as provided a tax exemption for 50% of Social Security income that will be phased in over time. &nbsp;Senators also passed legislation to reduce the business income tax rate to equalize tax rates on different types of job creators.&nbsp; A new “truth in taxation” law will now require local governments to notify taxpayers whenever their property tax askings are scheduled to increase more than 2%.&nbsp; And finally, ag land valuations will be reduced from 75% of market value to 50% of market value for the purposes of property taxes for bond issues.&nbsp; This will reduce the tax burden on farmers and ranchers.

Broadband Infrastructure:&nbsp;The Legislature approved the Broadband Bridge Act, which was introduced at my request.&nbsp; &nbsp;This will invest $20 million in matching grants annually to expand access to high-speed broadband to 30,000 Nebraska households in the next two years.&nbsp; This improved connectivity will help more Nebraskans to have the flexibility to work remotely, do their homework, and to access telehealth and ecommerce.

Expanded Education Opportunities: This session, Senators and I expanded education opportunities for the next generation of Nebraskans.&nbsp; We agreed to invest over $1 billion annually in state aid to K-12 schools.&nbsp; At my recommendation, the Legislature cut red tape to make it quicker and easier for military spouses licensed in another state to obtain a teaching permit after moving to Nebraska.&nbsp; This budget creates new scholarships for private institutions of higher education and continues funding scholarships for Community Colleges, State Colleges, and the University of Nebraska to connect students to career pathways with great-paying jobs.&nbsp; The budget also tripled the size of the textbook loan program, providing $3 million annually to support textbooks for private schools.

Other Major Wins:&nbsp;Important legislative action also occurred on pro-life tax credits, Second Amendment protections, healthcare licensing, and carryout alcohol.&nbsp; A new tax credit for families who have a stillborn baby will help offset medical bills, burial expenses, and costs of preparing for the baby’s arrival.&nbsp; Senators and I protected your Second Amendment rights by clarifying firearm transportation law and by providing gun owners with better notification and information regarding permit renewals. &nbsp;At my request, the Legislature made&nbsp;it easier for hospitals and healthcare facilities to meet their workforce needs by providing expedited reciprocity for many licensed healthcare professions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Finally, the Legislature enshrined my popular carryout alcohol executive order in law, ensuring that takeout cocktails, beer, and wine continue past the pandemic.

Even as the Legislature made significant progress on major priorities, there is still more work to do on a couple of key issues. &nbsp;The Legislature still needs to pass limits on the growth of local property taxes.&nbsp; Local government property taxes have gone up 4.3% per year over the past decade in Nebraska.&nbsp; That may not sound like much, but when compounded over 10 years, it’s nearly a 52% increase.&nbsp; By comparison, income grew 48% and inflation just 18.7% during the past decade.&nbsp; Unless Senators take action, this pattern will continue.

Additionally, the Legislature will need to reconvene later this year to complete the process of redistricting maps for congressional, legislative, and other districts.&nbsp; The State of Nebraska has been waiting on the Biden-Harris Administration for census data to allow us to complete this work.

We agreed to invest over $1 billion annually in state aid to K-12 schools.&nbsp; At my recommendation, the Legislature cut red tape to make it quicker and easier for military spouses licensed in another state to obtain a teaching permit after moving to Nebraska.&nbsp; This budget creates new scholarships for private institutions of higher education and continues funding scholarships for Community Colleges, State Colleges, and the University of Nebraska to connect students to career pathways with great-paying jobs.&nbsp; The budget also tripled the size of the textbook loan program, providing $3 million annually to support textbooks for private schools.Other Major Wins:&nbsp;Important legislative action also occurred on pro-life tax credits, Second Amendment protections, healthcare licensing, and carryout alcohol.&nbsp; A new tax credit for families who have a stillborn baby will help offset medical bills, burial expenses, and costs of preparing for the baby’s arrival.&nbsp; Senators and I protected your Second Amendment rights by clarifying firearm transportation law and by providing gun owners with better notification and information regarding permit renewals. &nbsp;At my request, the Legislature made&nbsp;it easier for hospitals and healthcare facilities to meet their workforce needs by providing expedited reciprocity for many licensed healthcare professions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Finally, the Legislature enshrined my popular carryout alcohol executive order in law, ensuring that takeout cocktails, beer, and wine continue past the pandemic.Even as the Legislature made significant progress on major priorities, there is still more work to do on a couple of key issues. &nbsp;The Legislature still needs to pass limits on the growth of local property taxes.&nbsp; Local government property taxes have gone up 4.3% per year over the past decade in Nebraska.&nbsp; That may not sound like much, but when compounded over 10 years, it’s nearly a 52% increase.&nbsp; By comparison, income grew 48% and inflation just 18.7% during the past decade.&nbsp; Unless Senators take action, this pattern will continue.Additionally, the Legislature will need to reconvene later this year to complete the process of redistricting maps for congressional, legislative, and other districts.&nbsp; The State of Nebraska has been waiting on the Biden-Harris Administration for census data to allow us to complete this work.As we move into the summer, I will be traveling the state to visit directly with you at town halls and other community events.&nbsp; HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters in south-central Nebraska saved more than 100 rabbits from a fire that threatened their large hutch in Holdrege. 

The Kearney Hub reports the fire broke out Monday afternoon on a property in Holdrege. Officials say the fire began in a workshop and spread to a lean-to livestock shelter. 

Holdrege Assistant Fire Chief Jim Wagner says the fire was only a couple of feet from the structure that housed between 100 and 150 rabbits when firefighters were able to pull the animals to safety. 

Wagner says no one was injured in the fire, and he was unaware of any animals being lost in the blaze.

Starting June 1, participants who visit any state parks or recreation areas, snap a photo at a designated station, and submit it and their story online are eligible to win prizes.

Designated selfie stations will be at 100 sites among Game and Parks’ 76 state park, state historical park and state recreation areas. Participants may be required to walk or explore in order to find the stations.

Only those who visit Chadron State Park, Victoria Springs State Recreation Area, Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Danish Alps State Recreation Area will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize Forest River RV Patriot Edition 14cc camper from AC Nelsen RV World.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new monthly survey shows the economy in nine Midwest and Plains states remaining strong in the wake of a devastating global pandemic, but the survey's index gauging inflation soared to a record high. 

The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions for May released Tuesday came in at 72.3, down slightly from April's record high of 73.9. Any score above 50 on the survey’s indexes suggests growth. 

But the survey's wholesale inflation gauge for the month surged to a record 96.3 from April’s previous record of 96.2, and nearly 1 in 3 supply managers surveyed said rapidly rising input prices were their greatest 2021 economic challenge. 

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Midwest economy report stays strong, shows inflation worries


In
an ongoing effort to improve the cardiac system of care in the Upper
Midwest, The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has
awarded a grant of $6.4 million to equip every law enforcement agency
as well as Nebraska Game and Parks facilities with the next
generation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). 

The grant,
facilitated through the Nebraska Department of Health &amp; Human
Services, Division of Public Health, will fund devices to be placed
in law enforcement vehicles in North Platte. The project includes
training which will be held at Mid Plains Community College. 


“Seconds
count during a cardiac arrest,” said Walter Panzirer, a Helmsley
trustee. “We know in Nebraska first responders often have great
distances to cover. This funding will ensure those who get to the
scene before EMS arrives give patients a better shot at survival.”

Studies
conducted by the American Heart Association demonstrate a
dramatically higher survival rate for cardiac patients shocked by law
enforcement, who are generally first on the scene, especially in
rural areas. 

The AEDs selected feature technology conducive to the
highly mobile and challenging environment of a patrol vehicle. The
AEDs will help ensure that rescuers provide the fastest first shock
when defibrillation is needed. 

The devices feature industry-leading
analysis technology that reduces pauses during CPR, allowing for
improved blood circulation and better odds of survival. Using Wi-Fi
connectivity, these self-monitoring devices can send near real-time
event data, including a patient’s heart rhythm and delivered
shocks, to incoming emergency services or receiving hospitals, thus
allowing for post-event evaluation to improve care delivery.

“With
this generous gift from the Helmsley Charitable Trust Grant, the
North Platte Police Department will be able to provide, on the spot
lifesaving emergency care to our community.  The addition of an AED
in each of our police patrol cars puts this piece of lifesaving
technology at the scene of every emergency we respond to,” said Chief
Dan Hudson.

North Platte police vehicles to be equipped with life-saving devices

HERSHEY, Neb.-When you think of celebrating the end of Summer in Lincoln County, you think of Hershey and their Fall Festival.

The annual event is back this year and features a parade, lunch and the beloved Between the Bars and Under the Stars street dance, featuring Country music singer/songwriter <a href="https://www.loganmize.com/">Logan Mize</a>.

The street dance will feature live music provided by Mize who has experienced success as a singer (Highway Find), and as a songwriter, writing hits such as Bucky Convington's Good Guys which charted at No. 30 on the Billboard Country Albums charts.

The Festival, hosted by the Hershey Lions Club, is the club's largest annual fundraiser and is used to support local nonprofits.

 The funds are also used to provide health screenings for students at Hershey Public Schools at no cost to the school or the students and vision screenings for those in Lincoln County who cannot afford it.

His work is always heard at a rodeo, but the man behind the music is rarely seen.

From rock and roll to country, from zydeco to techno beat, Benje Bendele works his magic in the sound booth at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, Neb.

A more-than 25 year veteran of the rodeo industry, Bendele, from Dublin, Texas, has been making fans tap their toes to the tunes for years.

He started as a tie-down roper and bull rider, but competing didn’t pay the bills, although it was fun.

He wanted to stay in the industry, so he began announcing, with his wife at the time doing the music, using cassette tapes, which was the latest technology in the 1990s.

Bendele bought a computer and a sound system, providing it for rodeos that didn’t have good sound systems. Committees began calling and asking for Bendele to bring his sound system and music to their rodeos.

Then he got hired to work the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the biggest stage in the rodeo world.

He was the first to be what is now called a “music director,” playing snippets of popular songs and using sound effects at a rodeo. Prior to then, some rodeos were using live bands.

At the National Finals Rodeo, his work was heard by rodeo committees from all over the nation, and Bendele’s phone began ringing.

His focus switched from announcing to being a music director, and he’s been in high demand ever since.

He’s worked the most prestigious rodeos on the continent: Rodeo Houston, the Calgary (Alberta) Stampede, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and he’s been the only music director to ever work the National Finals Rodeo.

He’s the “invisible” accompaniment to the announcer, the clown and the specialty act, providing the tunes and sound effects that pair with what’s going on in the arena.

Rodeo music isn’t all country, Bendele points out. He plays plenty of rock and roll and stays on top of what is currently popular.&nbsp; “I play all genres,” he said, including techno beat.

“I can see if they’re tapping their toes, playing with their kids to the beat of the music. If they’re digging it, I’ll keep it going. If they’re not digging it, I’ll play something else.”

He also plays music that matches a cowboy’s ethnicity or home. For example, while a Louisiana or Brazilian cowboy competes, he might play Cajun or Tejano music.

It keeps him on the road 45 weekends a year, putting 30,000-40,000 miles on his motorhome, which he lives in while on the road.

It’s a rewarding occupation, Bendele said. “It’s making people enjoy a rodeo, whether they’re a long-time fan or a first-time rodeo spectator.

“I want the people leaving the rodeo to say, ‘I really enjoyed that.’ Not specifically the music, but feeling the whole experience of it.

“I’m a piece of the entertainment pie at my rodeos. I want to be part of the experience.”

The annual Buffalo Bill Rodeo, held in North Platte, will run June 16-19 with performances starting at 8 pm each night. The rodeo is an inductee into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

This June, during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter is encouraging Nebraska residents to make brain health an important part of their return to normal.&nbsp;

To avoid technology overload, experts advise setting limits on your screen time, avoid carrying your phone everywhere, and disconnecting from digital devices at bedtime.&nbsp;

In small doses, stress teaches the brain how to respond in healthy ways to the unexpected, inconvenient or unpleasant realities of daily life. Prolonged or repeated stress, however, can wear down and damage the brain, leading to serious health problems including depression, anxiety disorders, memory loss and increased risk for dementia. Reports indicate that Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are especially vulnerable to physical and emotional stress. LANE COUNTY —A Kansas man died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Lane County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by Clarence E. Young, 81, Lakin, was westbound on Kansas 96 at eleven miles east of Kansas 23

The SUV left the roadway to the north, struck an embankment to a field access road, went airborne, rolled and came to rest on its passenger side.

&nbsp;Young was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Price and Sons Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kearny County sheriff's office had issued a Silver Alert for Young earlier in the day.

81-year-old Kan. man dies after violent SUV crash

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Park officials say visitation at Yellowstone National Park last month has increased by 40% compared to 2019, an increase of about 19,000 people and a record for the month. 

The Billings Gazette reported Friday that Superintendent Cam Sholly predicted the park would be busier early this year based on the inability of tourists to travel internationally as demand for outdoor recreation increased last year. 

He said that more than 67,000 visitors entered the park. The previous high was set in 2016 with more than 59,000 people. 

Grand Teton National Park also experienced high visitation last month with more than 87,700 visitors, a 48% increase compared to the same month in 2019.

TOPEKA –&nbsp; A fifth-grade student from Dodge City has won the 2021 National Missing Children’s Day poster contest, Attorney General Derek Schmidt and KBI Director Kirk Thompson announced.

Heidy Perez Veleta, a student at Sunnyside Elementary in Dodge City, was chosen the national winner by the U.S. Department of Justice. She was previously announced as the Kansas state winner, which qualified her for the national competition. Her entry was among 800 this year from 27 states.

 The annual poster contest is held in recognition of National Missing Children’s Day observed annually on May 25 since it was first designated by President Ronald Reagan.

Students all across the country enter artwork representing the theme, “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.” The poster contest provides an opportunity for schools, law enforcement and child advocates to discuss the issue of missing and/or exploited children with youth, parents and guardians and to promote child safety. It also brings attention to the united goal of bringing missing children home safely.

“Communication is key to ensuring our children have the tools they need to stay safe,” Schmidt said. “It’s important for parents to put a safety plan in place and regularly take time to review it with your kids. National Missing Children’s Day is a good reminder to have those important conversations, and I encourage all Kansans to do so.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) maintains a list of children missing from Kansas. That database can be accessed at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.missingkids.org/" target="_blank">www.missingkids.org</a>.&nbsp;

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of any of these missing persons should contact a law enforcement agency or call 1-800-KS-CRIME. Information about missing children also can be reported to NCMEC at 1 (800) THE-LOST (800-843-5678). The NCMEC list currently includes the names, photographs and other information about the 76 children missing from Kansas. 

Schmidt represents the National Association of Attorneys General as a member of NCMEC’s Law Enforcement Advisory Council.

Schmidt also reminded parents of the importance of keeping identifying information on children up-to-date in the event a child does become missing. Having an identity kit with the child’s fingerprints, height, weight, and a current photo can make it easier to quickly locate a missing child.

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) — The remains of more than 300 sailors and Marines who died when the USS Oklahoma sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor 79 years ago have been identified thanks to the work of experts at Offutt Air Force Base.

(AP) — The remains of more than 300 sailors and Marines who died when the USS Oklahoma sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor 79 years ago have been identified thanks to the work of experts at Offutt Air Force Base. The six-year effort to identify 388 people who went missing when the USS Oklahoma capsized during the attack is wrapping up this week after 338 of them have been identified. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has used DNA technology and other modern methods to identify the remains that were sent to Offutt after they were disinterred from the National Military Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
