RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is getting a new leader.

 Col. Joseph Sheffield has been named the next commander of the 28th Bomb Wing, the world’s largest B-18 bomber combat unit.

 He will replace Col. David Doss as base commander. 

Sheffield is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, including 1,125 combat hours.

 He comes to Ellsworth from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, where he served as the 36th Operations Group commander.

Crews have been conducting surveys in select parks every weekend since the beginning of April and will continue through the first weekend of August.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is looking for feedback about visitors’ park experiences at 22 state parks, recreation areas and historical parks. It is contracting with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Bureau of Sociological Research to conduct the surveys.

Game and Parks hopes to understand how to better serve the wants and needs of the public in Nebraska’s state parks. It also hopes to get a clearer picture of how people recreate in parks, and it looks forward to actionable feedback.

Bureau staff will be at different state park areas each weekend handing out surveys to visitors and asking for contact information to follow up on responding to the survey. They will be located next to the kiosk booths and entrances in the state park areas.

Gov. Ricketts calls legislative session 'historic'

Governor Pete Ricketts, in accordance with a proclamation from the White House, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff to honor the victims of the shooting that took place in San Jose, California earlier today.

Flags will be flown at half-staff through May 30, 2021 in honor of the victims.&nbsp; They will remain at half-staff until noon on May 31, 2021 to observe Memorial Day. &nbsp;

Nebraska ends session marked by tax cuts, internet expansion

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska has netted $400 million in financing through the sale of municipal bonds to be used for a growing list of renovations and replacement projects. 

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the sale took place Wednesday, and money garnered will go toward an $800 million backlog of projects at campuses in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney, as well as the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. 

The projects include a $75 million replacement of the Westbrook Music Building at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and construction of a $37.5 million College of Allied Health Professions building for the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.

(AP) — The University of Nebraska has netted $400 million in financing through the sale of municipal bonds to be used for a growing list of renovations and replacement projects. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the sale took place Wednesday, and money garnered will go toward an $800 million backlog of projects at campuses in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney, as well as the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. The projects include a $75 million replacement of the Westbrook Music Building at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and construction of a $37.5 million College of Allied Health Professions building for the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.

Laureen Riedesel, retired Beatrice Library Director, will be speaking on the Swedish Pioneers in Nebraska and their common experiences with other ethnic emigrants. 

In the latter half of the 19th century, Swedes were among the largest groups that emigrated to Nebraska. They caught “Amerikafeber” and came to claim their “free land,” full of hope and promise. 

The construction of churches and schools followed the building of their soddies and barns. An outstanding example of this pattern can be told through the story of Salem Church in rural Kearney County and the Carter School, originally located in Harlan County. These National Register of Historic Places properties are a continuing legacy of the Swedish pioneers in Nebraska.&nbsp; 

his program is one of seven Humanities Nebraska programs scheduled this year at the library, with funding provided by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and local funding.&nbsp;

North Platte Public Library to present free program on Pioneers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is reporting its lowest level of new virus cases since last April — shortly after the coronavirus pandemic began. 

State health officials said 521 virus cases were reported over the past week. That is the smallest number of new positive cases in the state since April 2020. 

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska also decreased over the past two weeks from 195.43 new cases per day on May 11 to 74.43 new cases per day on Tuesday. 

Over the past week, five new deaths were reported to give the state a total of 2,249 deaths.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Business and Community Education department at North Platte Community College will launch a series of summer weightlifting classes in June.

The classes include Athletic Fundamentals, Co-ed Weightlifting and Women’s Weightlifting. Classes will be offered afternoons and evenings in the McDonald-Belton Weight Room on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

Classes cost $59 each and last eight weeks. They will be taught by certified strength and conditioning trainer Camden Grasmick.

Athletic Fundamentals will be offered from 3-5 p.m. Mondays June 7- July 26. The course is designed as a summer lifting program for high school and college athletes. Workouts will be tailored to each participant.

Co-ed Weightlifting sessions will be from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays June 9 through July 28. Designed for both men and women, this class provides each student with a customized workout routine to fit individual weight loss and exercise needs. The intent is to create a feeling of comfort by closing the gym off to everyone but class participants.

Women’s Weightlifting will be from 4:30-6 p.m. June 9 through July 28. As with the co-ed class, the gym will be closed to the public during the time the class is in session, and workouts will be individualized to participants.

BENKELMAN, Neb. (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed strong storms that raked rural areas of southwestern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas spawned at least two tornadoes in mostly uninhabited parts of each state. 

The service's office in Goodland, Kansas, says the first tornadoes reported Wednesday hit around 3:30 p.m. in fields north of Benkelman in Nebraska. Two more were reported about an hour later northwest of Herndon in Kansas. 

Meteorologist Jesse Lundquist says the service received a report of one homestead near Herndon possibly being damaged by a tornado, but has received no reports of injuries. 

Lundquist says the storms also dropped large hail and heavy rain in the region.

Gov. Pete Ricketts signed the measure at the Capitol, saying it would expand broadband so that more Nebraskans can work from home, participate in remote learning, access telehealth service and enjoy other benefits. 

The law is designed to bring fast, reliable broadband service to an expected 30,000 households. Networks funded by the grant program will be required to have upload and download speeds of 1000 megabytes per second.

The first severe thunderstorm warnings for northern Kansas were issued around 11:30 a.m., and the system decided to make its home in that geographical area for the next several hours.

Rapidly developing supercell thunderstorms dropped numerous large tornadoes in rural areas of Dundy and Hitchcock counties with Max and Benkelman as the primary target areas.

Tornadoes were reported both north and south of Benkelman, and a large tornado remained on the ground for an extended period of time near the tiny unincorporated village of Max.

Tornado warnings were also issued for Red Willow and Hayes counties. The Weather Service has not received any confirmed reports of tornadoes in those areas.

The National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas has not released a tally on the number of confirmed tornadoes with yesterday's outbreak.

In addition to tornadoes, the storms packed baseball-sized hail, driven by 75 mph winds, and prompted severe thunderstorm warnings across the area.

Flash flood warnings remained in effect for Frontier and Hayes counties on Thursday morning.

Severe weather spawns tornado outbreak in Dundy, Hitchcock counties 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska restaurants can now offer carry-out alcohol permanently under a new state law inspired by Gov. Pete Ricketts’ efforts to help struggling businesses during the pandemic. 

Ricketts announced that he signed the measure into law. It went into effect immediately. 

The governor issued an executive order to allow carry-out alcohol in March 2020 to aid restaurants that were struggling financially because of the pandemic and mandatory social distancing restrictions. 

The order proved popular with the public, and some restaurants reported that it had helped their sales. 

Ricketts has said the order showed that the previous restriction on carry-out alcohol was unnecessary. 

The law applies to restaurants and farm wineries with the proper liquor licenses.

Raffle tickets were sold for the Grab and at today's meeting, Rotarians and representatives from Gary's drew and announced the winners. 

The winners will get a chance to race the clock and grab groceries from Gary's.

There is a two-per-item limit and a $50 limit on fresh meet. Participants are only allowed to grab food items.

The event will be held June 5 at the Gary's location on East 4th St.

The 30-16 vote was largely on party lines, with Republicans supporting the guidelines, even though Nebraska’s Legislature is ostensibly nonpartisan. 

Democrats, who are outnumbered and only hold seats in Omaha- and Lincoln-area districts, say the approved plan gives lawmakers too much wiggle room to tweak the maps for political gain.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A crew jacks up the North Platte Community College Foundation Auction House Tuesday - preparing it for a move to its new home.

The winners of this year’s auction house, which was constructed by students in NPCC’s building trades programs, were Paul and Percilla Lattin, of Mullen.

The house sold for a record high of $236,500. Proceeds will go back to students in the building trades in the form of scholarships.

North Platte Community College auction house leaves campus

LINCOLN, Neb.-The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services is recognizing two of its team members for a potentially life-saving act.

Corporal Edith Rodriguez and Corporal Stephanie Williams were recognized for their actions.

Officials say inmates were eating in the dining hall at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, in York, when a woman began choking.

Cpl. Rodriguez was the first to respond and found the woman gasping for air. She quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver.

Cpl. Williams then took over the procedure and repeated it until the object was removed from the woman's airway and she began breathing normally again.

The duo then assessed the woman and offered additional medical care.

Williams and Rodriguez were thanked for their dedication to the Department of Corrections and their commitment to keeping inmates safe.

Nebraska corrections workers recognized for saving choking inmate

The coronavirus pandemic has been a long journey, but through it all Nebraskans have pulled together to keep people healthy.&nbsp; On March 6, 2020, Nebraska reported its first positive case of the coronavirus.&nbsp; Over the last 15 months, Nebraskans have made many sacrifices.&nbsp; We have spent time apart from each other, figured out how to manage schools and businesses, and worked hard to slow the spread of the virus to protect our hospitals.&nbsp;

As our state grappled with the new virus, Nebraskans stepped up and did the right thing.&nbsp; Schools, churches, and businesses adjusted their operations to slow the spread.&nbsp; Families prioritized the health of loved ones at greater risk from the virus.&nbsp; In communities large and small, Nebraskans took care of their neighbors.&nbsp;

These actions helped us successfully preserve our hospital capacity throughout the pandemic.&nbsp; Nebraskans have had access to hospital beds, ICU beds, or ventilators whenever they needed care.&nbsp; We’re now down to 74 coronavirus hospitalizations in Nebraska, which represents less than 2% of our hospital capacity.&nbsp; Coronavirus hospitalizations are at their lowest point since we began tracking them statewide over a year ago in April 2020.&nbsp; More than 915,000 Nebraskans have now received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.&nbsp; To date, we’ve administered over 1.65 million vaccine doses.

As vaccinations rise and hospitalizations fall, Nebraska is returning to normalcy.&nbsp; On Monday, I held my last coronavirus briefing, and we ended all remaining Directed Health Measures—including quarantine requirements.&nbsp; I also signed an executive order to rescind many of the emergency executive orders that I had issued during the pandemic.&nbsp; At the State, we’re discontinuing our temporary remote work arrangements and getting all of our State teammates back into the office.&nbsp; I am urging all organizations, public and private, to drop pandemic restrictions, including mask requirements.

Nebraska’s approach to the pandemic has helped our state achieve great public health and economic outcomes.&nbsp; The Kaiser Family Foundation finds that Nebraska has one of the lowest coronavirus fatality rates in the nation.&nbsp; Nebraska had the sixth-highest rate of kids in schools during the 2020-2021 academic year.&nbsp; And our state has achieved the lowest unemployment rate in the United States.&nbsp; We’ve been able to keep people healthy while also helping keep people working and our kids in school along the way.
