OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s population grew at the same rate as the rest of the nation for the first time in at least 120 years, breaking the cycle in which the state consistently trailed the United States average. 

New U.S. Census numbers show Nebraska’s population increased 7.4% between 2010 and 2020, matching the national growth rate in the same period. 

The state had grown at slower pace every decade since at least 1900. David Drozd of the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research says he had expected Nebraska’s growth to slightly lag the national growth rate. 

Although a lot could change over the next decade, Drozd says Nebraska’s growth leaves it well-positioned to maintain its three U.S. House seats beyond 2030.

Nationally, the benefit goes to more than 64 million Americans. Sen. Brett Lindstrom, of Omaha, who sponsored the measure, says Nebraska is one of 13 states that tax the benefit.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska plans to immediately resume using Johnson &amp; Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine after federal health officials decided the shot’s benefits outweigh a rare risk of developing blood clots. 

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services announced the decision on Monday. 

Federal health officials gave the OK to resume using the shots Friday. 

Use of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine was suspended earlier this month after federal health officials documented a handful of cases, including one in Nebraska, in which women developed blood clots in the days after receiving the single-dose vaccine. Three of the women who developed blood clots later died.

Nebraska to resume using Johnson & Johnson's virus vaccine

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man has been arrested on allegations stemming from an incident on April 20.

According to police, at 8:36 p.m., an officer observed a green pickup pull into the Platte River Mall parking lot, 1000 S. Dewey St. 

Police say the officer recognized the pickup as one that is commonly operated by Elliot Fair who had a warrant for his arrest.  The pickup parked and the officer made voluntary contact with the driver who had exited the vehicle. 

 The driver was identified as Shane Hermes, 28. 

Police say Hermes was released at this time, as officers were only looking for Fair. 

 Officers observed Fair in the passenger seat of the vehicle at this time and placed him under arrest for the warrant without incident. 

Police say the area in the pickup where Fair was seated was searched and officers located a handgun in a backpack along with suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Police say both Fair and Hermes are convicted felons. 

 Based on the location of the items, police say probable cause was established to arrest both Hermes and Fair on charges related to the items in the vehicle. 

 Fair was taken into custody for the warrants and on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. 

Police say Hermes had already departed the scene but was located on April 23, and taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. 

 Hermes was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

North Platte man arrested following incident on 4/20

NORTH PLATTE, NEb.-Police said a man was arrested following a pursuit that began in North Platte last Friday.

According to police, at 9:43 a.m., officers observed a blue Honda Accord with no license plates, speeding in the 800 block of Rodeo Rd.&nbsp; 

Police said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled and a pursuit was initiated.&nbsp; 

Eventually, police said the pursuit ended up going westbound on Highway 30 with speeds of up to 115 mph.&nbsp; 

According to police, the suspect vehicle then turned off Highway 30 onto gravel roads where the pursuit continued.&nbsp; 

After a failed attempt of stopping the vehicle with stop sticks, the pursuit was terminated for safety concerns.&nbsp; 

Shortly after, police said Lincoln County deputies located the vehicle on county roads near Sutherland.&nbsp; Another brief pursuit was initiated but again was terminated for safety reasons.&nbsp; 

Police said the vehicle was then located near the Interstate 80 interchange at Sutherland but was unoccupied.&nbsp; 

Deputies entered a nearby business where they located the driver identified as Tyler Olexo, 22.&nbsp; Olexo was taken into custody without further incident.&nbsp; 

Olexo was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving under suspension, and speeding.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska warns of delays on some income tax returns

LINCOLN, Neb.-Starting July 19, the multi-state Lucky for Life Lotto game will hold drawings Monday through Sunday, seven days a week.

Currently, Lucky for Life drawings are held twice a week on Monday and Thursday evenings. Moving to daily drawings will give players more opportunities to win the top prize of $1,000 a day for life.

“The decision by the game group to add drawings increases the opportunities for players to win $1,000 a day for life, and reinforces the overall brand nationwide,” said Brian Rockey, Nebraska Lottery Director. “We also expect to generate additional proceeds for good causes across Nebraska.”

To prepare for the change to seven-day draws, starting on April 26 the amount of drawings that can be purchased in advance for Lucky for Life will be temporarily reduced. The maximum number of drawings that can be purchased on multi-draw ticket decreases by one after each successive drawing. Beginning Friday, July 16, players will again be able to purchase tickets for up to 12 weeks of drawings (84 draws). Complete information on the multi-draw phase-out is available at the Nebraska Lottery website, nelottery.com.

In August 2017, the Nebraska Lottery become the 25th lottery to join the multi-state Lucky for Life Lotto game. To date, one $25,000 a year for life and 55 $5,000 winning Lucky for Life tickets have been sold in Nebraska.

Lucky for Life tickets will still cost $2 per play, and prizes will remain unchanged. Players select five white ball numbers from 1 to 48, and one yellow “lucky” ball number from 1 to 18 for one play. To win the $1,000 a day for life top prize, players must match all six winning numbers. The second prize of $25,000 a year for life can be won by matching all five white ball numbers. Other cash prizes range from $5,000 to $4. Lucky for Life tickets can be purchased from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. CT any day of the week except from 8:30 p.m. to 8:33 p.m. CT on drawing nights.

The Calibraska Summer Arts Program will return to North Platte Community College after being cancelled last year due to COVID.

The program allows individuals from throughout NPCC’s service area to take classes from Los Angeles – based artists.

Classes will begin June 21 and continue through July 2 at NPCC. They are open to all ages. Both in-person and online formats are available, however those taking online classes may have to supply some of their own materials. Those who sign up before April 15 will receive a 20 percent discount.

Animation 1.0&nbsp;– Students in this entry level course, will animate paper, clay and more to learn principles of animation and other techniques to make an object come to life.

Taught by Erica Larsen-Dockray, Calibraska founder, the class is open to anyone age 7 or older. No previous animation or drawing experience is necessary. Those who want to take Animation 3.0 will need to take this class first.

Sessions are from 10 a.m. to noon June 21-25. The early bird fee is $80. Registration after April 15 is $100.

Special Topics: Effects Animation&nbsp;– Open to ages 6 and older, this class has limited space. It will be offered from 1-3 p.m. June 21-25.

The course will be taught by Zekkereya El-magharbel, an animator, graphic designer and illustrator.

He will demonstrate how to create stunning and mesmerizing special effects using primarily 2-D hand-drawn techniques. Students will have the tools to create any effect needed for their animated films by the end of the course.

Calibraska Summer Arts Program returns to North Platte Community College

LINCOLN, Neb. – Trout are more likely to be found in Nebraska than elephants. Prehistorically, though, this probably was not true.

The fossilized presence of mammoth in Nebraska is well described, but trout’s earliest recorded occurrence is from stocking by early Nebraska fish culturists and enthusiasts. Previous to about 150 years ago, there is little trustworthy information about trout swimming in the area now called Nebraska.

How and when trout arrived in Nebraska is an interesting story.

In the 1963 paper, A History of Nebraska’s Fishery Resources, by David J. Jones, there is an illustration titled Lewis and Clark Made the Earliest Fish Collections. While the Lewis and Clark collection included a fish they called “salmon,” it likely is the fish was something that appeared similar to trout, or was misnamed. Trout or salmon were not otherwise found in the lower Missouri River in other collections. Potentially cutthroat trout may have inhabited Nebraska as these are native to the east slope of the Rocky Mountains, but there is little evidence, folklore or tales of trout in Nebraska before settlement.

The Jones paper gives an interesting view of early fish management, both intentional and accidental. It shares the story of the earliest Nebraska fish stocking, although unintentional. A train with carloads of live fish traveling from the East Coast to California in 1873 derailed into the Elkhorn River east of Fremont. Brook trout were among the many varieties of exotic fish that escaped into the river that day, never to be seen again.

Until 1963, nine species of trout and salmon stockings were made in Nebraska: Atlantic salmon, brook trout, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, artic grayling and Kokanee salmon. The Jones paper gives a detailed conclusion to many of these stockings, many of which did not continue. Currently, four trout species are reproducing or being stocked regularly in Nebraska streams and ponds. The tiger trout is a fifth, but is a hybrid of brook and brown trout.

Rainbow trout are by far the most widely spread and stocked of all the trout. Rainbows are hardy and handle well in fish hatcheries. They are aggressive feeders, which makes them great for anglers to catch. Rainbows are stocked statewide in the fall and spring. Brown trout are natives of Europe and have established naturally reproducing populations in Nebraska because they are adaptable to variable habitats and temperatures. Brook trout are generally smaller and have found a niche, reproducing in cooler Sandhills and Pine Ridge streams. Cutthroat are recently being stocked around the state to offer a new species opportunity for anglers. Prehistorically, though, this probably was not true.The fossilized presence of mammoth in Nebraska is well described, but trout’s earliest recorded occurrence is from stocking by early Nebraska fish culturists and enthusiasts. Previous to about 150 years ago, there is little trustworthy information about trout swimming in the area now called Nebraska.How and when trout arrived in Nebraska is an interesting story.In the 1963 paper, A History of Nebraska’s Fishery Resources, by David J. Jones, there is an illustration titled Lewis and Clark Made the Earliest Fish Collections. While the Lewis and Clark collection included a fish they called “salmon,” it likely is the fish was something that appeared similar to trout, or was misnamed. Trout or salmon were not otherwise found in the lower Missouri River in other collections. Potentially cutthroat trout may have inhabited Nebraska as these are native to the east slope of the Rocky Mountains, but there is little evidence, folklore or tales of trout in Nebraska before settlement.The Jones paper gives an interesting view of early fish management, both intentional and accidental. It shares the story of the earliest Nebraska fish stocking, although unintentional. A train with carloads of live fish traveling from the East Coast to California in 1873 derailed into the Elkhorn River east of Fremont. Brook trout were among the many varieties of exotic fish that escaped into the river that day, never to be seen again.Until 1963, nine species of trout and salmon stockings were made in Nebraska: Atlantic salmon, brook trout, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, artic grayling and Kokanee salmon. The tiger trout is a fifth, but is a hybrid of brook and brown trout.Rainbow trout are by far the most widely spread and stocked of all the trout. Rainbows are hardy and handle well in fish hatcheries. They are aggressive feeders, which makes them great for anglers to catch. Rainbows are stocked statewide in the fall and spring. Brown trout are natives of Europe and have established naturally reproducing populations in Nebraska because they are adaptable to variable habitats and temperatures. Brook trout are generally smaller and have found a niche, reproducing in cooler Sandhills and Pine Ridge streams. Cutthroat are recently being stocked around the state to offer a new species opportunity for anglers. Trout have interesting history in Nebraska

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Four people have been accused of killing a man in a Rapid City motel room earlier this month. 

The Rapid City Journal reports that Travis Nelson, Tracy Laughlin, William Long and Gilbert Reyna have all been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the April 9 shooting death of 20-year-old Jesus Vance. 

Police found Vance shot dead in a room at the South Dakota Rose Inn.

 The four suspects also have been charged with aggravated assault and second-degree kidnapping. 

According to police reports, the group cut the face of Jake Williams, who was found outside the motel after the shooting. 

Williams had methamphetamine, a gun holster and a magazine. He has been charged with methamphetamine possession.

Proponents say&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/107/PDF/Intro/LB108.pdf" target="_blank">Legislative Bill 108</a>&nbsp;would help working families hit by the coronavirus pandemic's economic fallout. Shelley Mann, assistant director of SNAP at Food Bank for the Heartland, said her organization has not seen a hunger crisis on this scale in its 40-year history. She argued making SNAP accessible to more Nebraskans is critical because the program is a much more efficient way to feed people. "There's just no way that we can 'food bank' our way out of this increase in hunger," Mann contended. "For every meal provided by every food bank in the United States, there are nine additional meals provided by the food stamp program." The legislation aims to eliminate the so-called cliff effect, where workers who get promotions and small pay increases end up losing hundreds of dollars in food assistance. The measure would allow families to continue receiving help, in part by considering expenses including child care that make it harder to purchase food. Critics warn that expanding SNAP eligibility from Nebraskans earning 130% of the federal poverty level to 185% would disincentivize people from seeking work. Mann countered allowing workers to bring in a little more income without losing the assistance keeping them afloat will set them up for long-term success in the workforce, which will help families become less dependent on government programs and food pantries. "We are incentivizing work," Mann asserted. "We're incentivizing promotion, we're incentivizing taking more hours. Because we're saying 'If you do those things, we are not going to punish you.'" She added expanding SNAP eligibility also will help Nebraska's state and local economies recover from the public health crisis. Every dollar in federal benefits generates $1.70 in economic activity. Mann pointed out SNAP dollars are spent quickly and locally at farmer's markets and grocery stores.

Expanding access to SNAP could help more Nebraskans weather COVID

46% of adults do not feel comfortable going back to living life like they used to before the pandemic

MANHATTAN – A new report from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apa.org/">American Psychological Association</a>&nbsp;indicates that most U.S. adults are surprised that the COVID-19 pandemic has lasted so long.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2021/one-year-pandemic-stress-conclusion">APA’s report on Stress in America</a>&nbsp;found that 82% of American adults are surprised that the pandemic has lasted more than a year. Nearly 7 in 10 (67%) said that living through the pandemic has been a rollercoaster of emotions.&nbsp;

And Elaine Johannes,&nbsp;the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, said&nbsp;46% of adults do not feel comfortable going back to living life like they used to before the pandemic&nbsp;

“It’s amazing that this has gone on more than a year,” Johannes said.&nbsp;“So, it’s not surprising that so many are re-evaluating and wondering what’s next as they re-enter community life.&nbsp;

“It’s hard for us to deal with. Usually we can acclimate to a sudden trauma, grief or loss. With the help of our friends or family, we can move on.&nbsp;But these repeated ups and downs …it’s been tough.”&nbsp;

Johannes noted that many adults likely have gone through stages of shock, denial, sadness and grief and, eventually, acceptance.&nbsp;

“But some of the research around grief and change and how we feel about that has added another perspective, a sixth stage&nbsp;of meaning.” Johannes said. “This is where we feel like we have to have meaning assigned to (the occurrence). I think that’s where our emotions are right now. We’re asking ourselves, ‘what do we do now,’ ‘how do we recover knowing that we can’t go back to the way life was’ or ‘what’s the meaning that we can take away from this pandemic, even though it’s still going on.’”&nbsp;

Johannes said there is evidence that indicates Americans 100 years ago dealt with the same emotions during the Spanish Flu pandemic. During that time, there was also political unrest, doubts about the proper way forward and many deaths. That incident also showed that the ripple effects were felt for many years after.&nbsp;

“As a society, we need to be ready to re-acclimate (after the COVID-19 pandemic), redefine what our recovery is and reflect on what we gained from it,” Johannes said. “We can’t just go back to ‘normal’ because we will never be the same again.”&nbsp;

Work that has been done to address disaster-related psychological trauma has led to strategies that aid in recovery. Those include adapting to a different normal; feeling a sense of some control over our emotions; gaining perspective and assigning meaning to the losses; and feeling mastery from the experience.&nbsp;

Johannes punctuated her point by recalling a saying from President Harry S. Truman: ‘The reward of suffering is experience.’&nbsp;

“That, to me, kind of gives an understanding that the suffering and loss is real, and the sadness is authentic,” she said. “But, what can we gain from that? I think we can say that we are wiser and we have this experience to guide us in the future.”&nbsp;

Johannes added that the APA report highlighted an important point that Americans shared the experience as “a true community.”&nbsp;

“No matter where we were, Americans realized this was a tough, tough thing to go through,” she said. “We felt this roller coaster, up and down, not being sure what was next…But, as a group, we were still a community.”&nbsp;

Health expert discusses mental health impacts of pandemic 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska health officials are reporting a spike in the number of norovirus cases statewide this month. 

The contagious virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain normally peaks between December and March. 

But the state Department of Health and Human Services said last week that 14 suspected or confirmed outbreaks of the virus had been reported at long-term care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, child care centers, and schools across Nebraska. 

In the Omaha area alone, Douglas County health officials said there have been 82 cases of the virus in the county so far this year, compared with 45 last year at this time.

It all started a year ago when pandemic boredom set in and 22-year-old Josh Swain, from Tucson, Arizona, messaged others who shared his name on social media and challenged them to a duel. 

Joshes from around the country showed up at Air Park in Lincoln to participate in the silliness. 

The festivities started with a “righteous battle of Rock, Paper, Scissors” between Josh Swain from Arizona and another Josh Swain from Omaha. 

KLKN-TV reports the Arizona student won, allowing him to claim the title of the true Josh Swain. 

The pool noodle competition that followed was open to anyone with the first name of Josh.

The Casper Star-Tribune has reported that federal statistical models show that Wyoming is home to the most vaccine-hesitant counties in the country. 

Community college administrators told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that they're working to provide students and employees with resources to make informed decisions about whether to get the vaccine. 

The university has given employees incentives to get vaccinated, such as electronics and football tickets. 

Both schools plan to reopen next fall to mostly in-person learning.

Noem said in a statement Wednesday that South Dakota has resisted government mandates and the state “is stronger for it.”

LINCOLN, Neb. – More than 2,000 students in grades 6-12 are expected to compete in the 51st Annual Cornhusker Trap Shoot April 29-May 1 on the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association in Doniphan, Nebraska.

Joining shooters from across Nebraska also will be those from Wyoming, Iowa, Colorado and South Dakota.

COVID-19 protocols are in place to provide for the safety of everyone at the event.

Individuals attending the shoot must wear face masks when they are not able to properly create social distance.

To prevent the gathering of crowds, the NTA clubhouse will be closed to all, except the following: shoot officials, coaches and participants picking up prizes. Extra outdoor restrooms will be available on the grounds.

“We’re looking forward to returning to Doniphan for another great shoot,” Shoot Director Eric Javins said. “We are taking measures to make sure everyone enjoys remains safe while enjoying this great event.”

The competition will take place in individual and team divisions. Junior high students (grades 6-8) will shoot 100 16-yard targets on April 29. High school competitors (grades 9-12) will shoot 75 16-yard targets on April 30, then 75 handicap targets on May 1. The high school shooter with the highest combined score will earn the Cornhusker Cup. Competition begins at 8 a.m. each day.

The Cornhusker Trap Shoot is open nationwide to all shooters in grades 6-12 who have completed a hunter education course.

The NTA home grounds are 3 miles south of Interstate 80 exit 312 on U.S. 281. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the NTA are hosts.

The North Platte Community College Foundation and North Platte Public Schools are joining forces to put local students on the path to a higher education.

The organizations are teaming up for North Platte Giving Day in an effort to raise money for local students taking dual credit classes.

Donations to the North Platte Public Schools Foundation will be put toward scholarships for students taking dual credit classes at North Platte High School while donations to the NPCC Foundation will go toward dual credit scholarships for any high school student in Lincoln County.

“Dual credit courses are a great way for students to earn college credit while still in high school,” said Kayla Thurman, the college’s interim director of Institutional Advancement. “However, because the students are still in high school, many of them do not qualify for grants or traditional scholarships. Many high school students who would like to take college classes may not be able to due to limited financial resources.”

The NPCC Foundation board created the Dual Credit Scholarship Program to help support those students and to encourage more to take dual credit courses.

“Since 2019, the NPCC Foundation has been able to award 71 dual credit scholarships valued at $150 each to deserving Lincoln County high school students,” said Thurman. “A generous donation to the NPCC Foundation will allow us to continue to those efforts.”

Hosted by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, North Platte Giving Day is a 24-hour online fundraising event that provides an opportunity for people to donate to their favorite causes in Lincoln County. The actual event is May 5, but financial contributions can be pre-scheduled beginning April 26.

Contributions can be made online with a computer, smartphone or tablet at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.northplattegivingday.org/NorthPlatteCommunityCollegeFoundation" target="_blank">northplattegivingday.org/NorthPlatteCommunityCollegeFoundation</a>.&nbsp;Checks can also be delivered in-person or mailed to the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation at 121 N. The minimum donation is $10, but there’s no maximum gift limit. People can give to as many nonprofits as they would like. Donations are tax deductible as charitable contributions.

The nonprofits will receive 100 percent of the money allotted to them. As an added bonus, they will have a chance to win prizes from sponsors.

Lincoln County Marriage Licenses

KEARNEY, Neb.-Police in Kearney said a man has died following a single-vehicle accident.

According to Kearney police, at
approximately 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, officers, Good Samaritan EMS, and Kearney Fire
Department were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Platte Rd
within Broadfoot’s Sand and Gravel property in South Kearney.


Police said officers located a 1997 GMC K1500 truck against a metal gate. 

The
driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was found deceased upon
arrival. and was identified as Robert Beam,53, of Kearney. 

Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle was
traveling east on a private access road (also referred to as Platte
Rd) and collided with a partially open metal gate. 

The cause of the
crash remains under investigation by the Kearney Police Department.


Kearney
Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Kearney / Buffalo
County Fatality Accident Investigation Team (F.A.I.T.), Buffalo
County Sheriff’s Office, CHI Good Samaritan EMS, and the Kearney
Volunteer Fire Department. An autopsy has been ordered by the Buffalo
County Attorney.
