Between Feb. 3-5, Nebraska high school students competed around the state during a virtual regional Envirothon competition demonstrating natural resources knowledge by identifying trees, labeling fish anatomy and determining soil structure.

The winning teams from each Envirothon region as well as eight wildcards – selected based on their competition scores – qualify to compete at state. This year’s state qualifiers include:

Due to the pandemic, the contest went virtual with teams taking online, timed tests. High school students compete on five-member teams in seven environmental areas including: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, range, policy and a current environmental issue.

Nebraska 'Envirothon' competition qualifies 14 teams for state

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Residents in Nebraska and Iowa woke up to bitterly cold conditions Tuesday morning, leading to slick streets that contributed to multiple crashes in the Omaha area.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning early Tuesday for parts of 13 counties in central, east-central and south-central Nebraska, with wind chills near 30 below zero that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in under 10 minutes. The warning covered the cities of Grand Island, Hastings, York, Loup City and Central City, among others.

In a wider band around the warning area, the weather service issued a wind chill advisory, warning of wind chills to 25 below in much of the eastern half of Nebraska and several counties in southwestern Iowa.

The cold led several schools in the region to start classes late and saw some services in the area close.

High temperatures for Tuesday were expected to climb only into the single digits around Grand Island and up to 10 degrees in Omaha and western Iowa. Bitter cold is forecast to continue throughout the week, according to the weather service.

Nebraska, Iowa residents wake up to 20-below wind chills

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska officials expect nearly 70,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines to be available this week as they continue to work to distribute more shots.

The state said 69,600 vaccine doses total should be released in Nebraska this week, up from 61,750 a week ago. Most of those vaccines are being distributed through local health departments, but nearly 6,000 doses will go to a new program that is just getting started to distribute vaccines directly through some retail pharmacies.

Health departments across the state have started to vaccinate people 65 and older and some workers who can't do their jobs remotely. Initially, the priority was to vaccinate health care workers and residents and workers at long-term care facilities.

The new retail pharmacy program will help vaccinate people 65 and older, but Nebraska officials haven't yet released details of which pharmacies will be included and when they will begin giving shots.

So far, nearly 166,000 Nebraskans have registered at the state's vaccine website,&nbsp;<a href="https://vaccinate.ne.gov/" target="_blank">vaccinate.ne.gov</a>. to be notified when they become eligible.

The state said 234,132 doses of the vaccines have been administered across Nebraska, and roughly 4.6% of the state's population has received both required doses.

Nebraska reported 344 new virus cases and 10 deaths Monday for a total of 194,170 cases and 1,978 deaths since the pandemic began. The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased from 738.43 new cases per day on Jan. 25 to 410.86 new cases per day on Monday.

 Voters approved the amendment in November despite opposition from Gov. Kristi Noem.

 Noem’s administration supported a legal challenge from two law enforcement officers who argued that the amendment was technically flawed. 

Marijuana supporters argued the lawsuit was an effort to overturn the will of the people. 

Lawyers expect an appeal to the state Supreme Court.

 Possession of small amounts of marijuana had been set to become legal on July 1.

NebraskaLand National Bank launches podcast

CRAWFORD, Neb. – There will be more happy campers at Fort Robinson State Park. Or, at least there will be room for them.

The park is adding 42 new pads to the Red Cloud Campground, which serves visitors seeking full hookups for their recreational vehicles and campers. Each pad will have connections for 50-amp electricity, water and sewage. The expansion will more than double the size of the campground, which has 32 pads.

Mike Morava, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission regional park superintendent, said the project was needed because the campground often reaches capacity during the busy season between June and September. He is hopeful the new sites will be ready for visitors this summer.

The estimated $1.27 million cost of the project is being paid for from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Capital Maintenance Fund. The fund consists of money collected from taxes on the sale of motorboats and personal watercraft.

The campground is one of three at the park. The Soldier Creek Campground offers 98 sites for everything from tents to RVs, while another campground is exclusive to those who bring horses to the park.

Fort Robinson State Park expanding campsites for RVs

Over the past four months, North Platte Public School administration and the North Platte Public Schools Board of Education have been investigating potential budget shortfalls for the 2021-2022 school year.&nbsp; This shortfall resulted from an enrollment decline of 187 students and a predicted decrease in state aid based on trends from previous years. The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) requires districts to submit their official enrollment on October 1st of each year.&nbsp; NPPS officials monitor student enrollment from May through October and begin making budget adjustments once NDE verifies the enrollment status.

In December, the Nebraska Department of Education recalculates the State Aid allocations from the previous year using the official student enrollment data submitted and verified in October.&nbsp; These recalculations resulted in a projected loss of approximately $2 million in&nbsp; State Aid for NPPS.&nbsp; At this time, the NPPS administration began discussions with the board subcommittees regarding how best to meet the shortfall.&nbsp; In January, the NPPS administration invited public comment and idea-sharing.&nbsp; These ideas were presented to the board during the January 11, 2021 Board of Education meeting.

The district and school administration have taken several actions to identify budget savings options, including; Lake/Osgood Elementary merger into the current six existing elementary schools, per board request the merger of Madison and Adams Middle School, the evaluation of personnel, and the need to fill vacant positions, consideration of using building funds, NPHS excess bond funds, Cash Reserves.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the January 11, 2021, Board meeting, a decision was made to remove all school mergers as potential options.

On January 26th, the Nebraska Department of Education&nbsp; Administrator for Financial and Administrative Services notified NPPS of the TESSOA calculation updates that will increase the NPPS budget by $1.4 million in additional state aid (poverty funds). During the first week of February, the NPPS administration presented an updated financial report to board subcommittees; an official report was made at the February 8th, 2021, board meeting.

During the board meeting Skip Altig, board president, added, "While our school district was facing a shortfall for the upcoming 2021-22 budget, we have received GREAT news in the past two weeks.&nbsp; With our administration's tireless work, especially Chief Financial Officer Stuart Simpson and our superintendent Dr. Ron Hanson the district will receive more funds that will not create as large of a shortfall as first anticipated.&nbsp; This is wonderful news for the board, our staff, students, parents, and patrons.&nbsp; It just shows how working together as a team we can find ways to overcome obstacles that sometimes appear during the year."

The increase in the Poverty Fund portion of the State Aid formula is due to the hard work from Stuart Simpson, Executive Director of Finance Facilities and Operations. It has been a three-year process to increase the poverty fund portion of State Aid. &nbsp; Mr. Simpson has been with the district for a little over 15 years. "During his tenure with NPPS, Mr. Simpson has been nothing more than dedicated and persistent in requesting increases in state aid budget allowances for the district.&nbsp; He does this with a keen awareness for our students and staff's current and future needs," said Dr. Hanson, Superintendent of NPPS.&nbsp;

Poverty Funding is defined by the number of students receiving free or reduced meals to which sixty percent of NPPS students qualify.&nbsp; The quest for an increase in State Aid began several years ago as NPPS identified an upturn in Free and Reduced Lunch requests.&nbsp; Coupled with this upturn and the district's desire to provide high-quality curriculum, social, emotional, and instructional support to every student, Mr. Simpson requested the additional funding that we were granted this January.

NPPS continually attempts to receive as much funding in state aid support for our students as possible. To calculate the amount of aid received, districts must take the District's Needs subtracted from the Resources available, which then equates to the amount of State Aid allocated to the district. As our poverty level has increased, so have the needs of the district.&nbsp; The identification of the poverty upturn has now increased the amount of State Aid we will receive.

The updated budget allocation is good news for North Platte Public Schools students, staff, and families as funding for meal programs, social workers, and educational aids can continue to enhance the many educational opportunities offered at NPPS.

Wind Chill Advisory cancelled for portions of southwest Nebraska, Sandhills

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska could spend up to $20 million a year to expand high-speed internet service in rural areas under a proposal backed Monday by a diverse alliance of farm, business and school groups and championed by Gov. Pete Ricketts.

The proposed grant program was pitched as an incentive for broadband providers to install service lines in rural areas where doing so isn't financially feasible because the populations are too small.

"We've got to have this infrastructure, it's basic infrastructure," Ricketts told the Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Monday.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/8a827969cda94aa3ab52b941414d5245" target="_blank">2019 report</a>&nbsp;commissioned for Nebraska lawmakers found that many rural residents have at least one provider, but average speeds are slower than in the cities and there are fewer companies to compete and drive down prices.

Ricketts said he often hears from constituents in remote areas who have to drive to their nearest public library for internet service. He said the problem was aggravated by the pandemic, which forced many families to work and attend school remotely.

The bill would set aside $20 million a year for the next two years for grants aimed at unserved areas of the state. Ricketts said it would help cover an estimated 30,000 residents.

It would also create a "challenge process" for internet companies, allowing them to qualify for grant money if they install internet with minimum download speeds of 100 megabytes per second and upload speeds of 100 megabytes per second, which would easily be capable of streaming high-definition movies from multiple devices at the same time. Companies would also have to complete the project within 18 months and repay the grant money if tests later show that they failed to meet the speed requirements.

Some lawmakers questioned whether the proposal would benefit farms and other remote areas. Sen. Bruce Bostelman, of Brainard, said current broadband maps show coverage in areas of the state where it doesn't actually exist.

"I'm just wondering how much of this is going to reach outside of a town or village," he said.

Nebraska Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue said his group's members strongly support the measure, which they see as critical to help them run their farms.

"We believe rural areas should have access to affordable broadband, just like urban areas do," he said.

Lack of internet access was a key weakness identified in a 2019 "Blueprint Nebraska" report that examined steps the state can take to improve its economy and attract workers, said former state Sen. Jim Smith, the executive director of the group that conducted the report.

"Virtual connectivity is essential to business innovation and growing Nebraska's most promising industry sectors," Smith said.

(AP) - Nebraska could spend up to $20 million a year to expand high-speed internet service in rural areas under a proposal backed Monday by a diverse alliance of farm, business and school groups and championed by Gov. Pete Ricketts.The proposed grant program was pitched as an incentive for broadband providers to install service lines in rural areas where doing so isn't financially feasible because the populations are too small."We've got to have this infrastructure, it's basic infrastructure," Ricketts told the Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Monday.A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/8a827969cda94aa3ab52b941414d5245" target="_blank">2019 report</a>&nbsp;commissioned for Nebraska lawmakers found that many rural residents have at least one provider, but average speeds are slower than in the cities and there are fewer companies to compete and drive down prices.Ricketts said he often hears from constituents in remote areas who have to drive to their nearest public library for internet service. He said the problem was aggravated by the pandemic, which forced many families to work and attend school remotely.The bill would set aside $20 million a year for the next two years for grants aimed at unserved areas of the state. Ricketts said it would help cover an estimated 30,000 residents.It would also create a "challenge process" for internet companies, allowing them to qualify for grant money if they install internet with minimum download speeds of 100 megabytes per second and upload speeds of 100 megabytes per second, which would easily be capable of streaming high-definition movies from multiple devices at the same time. Companies would also have to complete the project within 18 months and repay the grant money if tests later show that they failed to meet the speed requirements.Some lawmakers questioned whether the proposal would benefit farms and other remote areas. Sen. Bruce Bostelman, of Brainard, said current broadband maps show coverage in areas of the state where it doesn't actually exist."I'm just wondering how much of this is going to reach outside of a town or village," he said.Nebraska Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue said his group's members strongly support the measure, which they see as critical to help them run their farms."We believe rural areas should have access to affordable broadband, just like urban areas do," he said.Lack of internet access was a key weakness identified in a 2019 "Blueprint Nebraska" report that examined steps the state can take to improve its economy and attract workers, said former state Sen. Jim Smith, the executive director of the group that conducted the report."Virtual connectivity is essential to business innovation and growing Nebraska's most promising industry sectors," Smith said.

North Platte Public Schools mobile food pantry postponed

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation is excited to finally announce the winners of the Staff Awards from the 2019-2020 School Year. 

 Due to COVID the annual Education After Hours which would have been held in April 2020 was postponed and then finally canceled.  At the event, the foundation recognizes Distinguished NPHS Alumni.  Those Alumni will be recognized at a later date. 

 There are awards for staff members in the North Platte Public School District who have been nominated by their peers, parents and the community.  These nominations are submitted by many people who appreciate what all staff does to enrich the lives of the students. We are thankful to our sponsors who make this happen. 

The Foundation Board decided it was time to celebrate the NPPSD Staff. It was time to take the awards to the staff.  Pulling off this surprise took some coordination from the principals at four buildings, to the presenting this out on the NPPS Sunday Spotlight and finally someone to video. 

 The Foundation would like to thank all that assisted in making this happen.  A big shout out to Mr. Philep Willey who took his time and talent to get these moments on film.  Mr. Willey teaches Digital and Advanced Digital Media, Information Technology along with other things at NPHS. 

Awards were given in four categories Teacher of the Year for PreK-5th, Teacher of the Year for 6th-12th, Staff Person of the Year and Bulldog of Excellence. There are many staff within the district that are deserving of these awards.  This is never easy to determine who receives these awards

The 2019-2020 Staff Awards goes to Mike McQuire-Teacher of the Year-PreK-5th.  Mr. McQuire teaches physical education at Eisenhower Elementary and he also coaches Track and Field. He has worked for the district for over 35 years. 

Ashely Werkmeister-Teacher of the Year 6th-12th. Mrs. Werkmeister teaches dual credit English and junior English at NPHS. 

Marnia Hughes-Staff Member of the Year.  Ms. Hughes assists with Early Childhood Services 

Katie Pacheco-Bulldog Award of Excellence. Ms. Pacheco is a Title 1 teacher at Lincoln Elementary. 

A few of these awardees are alumni that are now teaching where their education began.

The Mid-Plains Community College Imperial Campus will offer a four-week Great Plains literature course beginning March 4.

Classes will be taught by Martha Kruse, former associate professor of English for the University of Nebraska at Kearney, from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays.

Each week will have a different focus. Topics will revolve around the settlement of the plains, including works by famed author Willa Cather, weather on the plains, children’s and young adult literature and modern novels set in Nebraska and eastern Colorado.

The course will be offered both on site at the Imperial Campus and via Zoom.

The fee is $45. Registration can be done at&nbsp;<a href="https://bceregister.mpcc.edu/" target="_blank">bceregister.mpcc.edu</a>&nbsp;or by calling the Imperial Campus at (308) 882-5972.

Adults only: Virtual webinar talks animal love in time for Valentine’s Day

I hear a lot about white privilege.&nbsp;

I grew up in Martin county, Kentucky. We were considered one of the poorest counties in the United States. In April, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson and his entourage of staff, secret service, media and other politicians swarmed into the county seat of Inez during his war on poverty campaign tour.&nbsp;

Johnson and the entourage rode through our town waving and then proceeded on down route 3, which was less than three miles north of my homeplace. He walked onto the porch of a local family where he did a photo session that would be shown on every media source around the world. I just watched it on YouTube.&nbsp;&nbsp;He then returned to his Cadillac, came back through Inez and shook a few hands at the courthouse before he boarded his helicopter and left us. He had what he needed which were real pictures of real poverty and a story of real poverty from the hills of East, Kentucky. There was nothing about Johnson's visit that communicated anything about the white privilege of East, Kentucky. We had never heard of white privilege. We hadn't thought much about privilege or poverty either. I don't think too many of us thought we were poor. We didn't know the difference really. We didn't have anybody telling us that we should be demanding equity with others in the country.&nbsp;

After Johnson flew out, we resumed our normal lifestyles. The family pictured in the photo op continued to have a very difficult life of poverty. Even though they had the President of the United States on their front porch it wasn't enough to save them from lives of poverty and difficult times. President Johnson's intentions were good.&nbsp;&nbsp;He led Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act in August, 1964 which was part of his war on poverty effort.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was a nice gesture.&nbsp;

Unfortunately, families throughout Martin county and East, Kentucky still grappled with poverty after the government money and new programs were approved.&nbsp;&nbsp;Common life continued to be living without indoor plumbing. For many people, this meant a very difficult life of finding alternative ways to access water. Some people had outdoor wells. They would drop a bailer bucket into a well and "draw" up a bucket of water. Several of my family members had wells of this nature and I remember their water tasting pretty good. This also meant many families did not have indoor bathrooms. Going to the bathroom meant going outside to a tiny little building built over a hole in the ground. In the winter, trudging snow to go to the bathroom at any hour of the day was cruel. This also meant taking a bath by collecting water from the well and carrying it into the house which involved a lot of carrying if you were going to take a bath. The same process occurred when washing clothes. Enough water had to be collected to wash and then rinse the clothes. This was a massive job.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does this sound like white privilege?

By the time I was born, my family had indoor plumbing and we had one bathroom. We still had an outdoor toilet that sat out from the house in the back yard. I tore it down a couple of years back. Actually, it was hard to tear it down because I knew it symbolized a very different era of life which too many of us Appalachian people are all too familiar.&nbsp;

We had terrible water as a kid. It was really bad to drink and terrible for washing clothes. The sulfur in the water would ruin our clothes. This meant my mother was always catching rainwater in large tubs outside the house. In dry weather when I was a child we would walk to the creek and carry water back to the house one bucket at a time. That always embarrassed me as a kid. I don't know why. Most of the people up and down the creek where I lived had to do the same thing plus many of these people did not have indoor plumbing either. Does this sound like white privilege?

When school was in session at my elementary called Tomahawk, I sat with classmates every day who came to school hungry. The free school lunch program was the only decent meal they ever got to eat. Several boys in our school who did not have indoor plumbing came to school dirty but would often stand in the school bathroom washing their hands and faces before class. I'm sure some girls did the same thing Our little elementary school bathroom was a luxury to them. Does this sound like white privilege?&nbsp;

I hear all this talk about white privilege. Growing up in an inner-city dwelling is surely filled with hardships but these dwellers at least have access to a real kitchen, running water, an indoor bathroom and even television and radio reception. These are luxuries that many Appalachian kids did not have growing up. Even today, in too many places in East, Kentucky and throughout Appalachia there are still families growing up without indoor bathrooms, access to water and surviving daily hunger. Internet cannot be found in too many Appalachian areas. These are the scenarios that have become ignored by media, government and employers. Thank God it's not even close to what it once was but I've been in the hollers of the mountains and seen enough to know poverty is still real and a cruel existence.&nbsp;

Today, 14 of the 50 poorest counties in the United States are all from the same East Kentucky region that Johnson visited in 1964. For Martin county, "The per capita income&nbsp;is just over $18,000," according to the 2019 Census reporter. Twenty-six (26.3) percent of the county is still at the poverty level according to Data USA with a median household income of $35,125. The county is 99 percent white.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does this sound like a place of white privilege? McCreary county is located in the Daniel&nbsp;Boone&nbsp;National Forest in southern Kentucky along the Tennessee state border. The only county nationwide where most households earn less than $20,000 a year, McCreary&nbsp;is the poorest county in both Kentucky and the United States.&nbsp; The life expectancy is just 73. (USA Today) Does this sound like white privilege? The Washington Post reported that the life expectancy for the 5thdistrict in Eastern, Kentucky is under 73 making it the shortest life span expectancy in the United States. Owsley County Kentucky's life span expectancy has been reported to be 67.3 years while in San Jose, California the life expectancy is 83.&nbsp;

The white privilege I enjoyed as a kid was that I was fortunate to be raised around hard-working people. My dad spent four hours a day driving to and from Holden, West Virginia to work in an underground coal mine. He spent over 30 years stooped over, on his knees or on his back in a dark coal mine. He made a living until at the age of 55 his health started failing him and he had to quit. He and my mother kept food on the table. We raised a garden. We had livestock. My family worked hard. My uncles and aunts farmed and worked whatever jobs they could find to make ends meet. My grandfather and grandmother Hinkle worked in a very small grocery store six days a week until he was 83 and she was 80. They worked hard until they died. No one had unemployment checks rolling in. No one had Social Security Disability checks. No one was receiving stimulus checks. There weren't food stamps or other federal or state money available to help anyone out. Our family had a mindset to work because that was our only means of surviving.&nbsp;

I have never experienced anything like what some of my American friends have experienced growing up. Or, what some still experience. I'm certainly not intending to belittle your experiences or trying to "one up you" on who was poorer or had it harder. President Johnson's intentions were good.&nbsp;&nbsp;He led Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act in August, 1964 which was part of his war on poverty effort.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was a nice gesture.&nbsp;Unfortunately, families throughout Martin county and East, Kentucky still grappled with poverty after the government money and new programs were approved.&nbsp;&nbsp;Common life continued to be living without indoor plumbing. For many people, this meant a very difficult life of finding alternative ways to access water. Some people had outdoor wells. They would drop a bailer bucket into a well and "draw" up a bucket of water. Several of my family members had wells of this nature and I remember their water tasting pretty good. This also meant many families did not have indoor bathrooms. Going to the bathroom meant going outside to a tiny little building built over a hole in the ground. In the winter, trudging snow to go to the bathroom at any hour of the day was cruel. This also meant taking a bath by collecting water from the well and carrying it into the house which involved a lot of carrying if you were going to take a bath. The same process occurred when washing clothes. Enough water had to be collected to wash and then rinse the clothes. This was a massive job.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does this sound like white privilege?By the time I was born, my family had indoor plumbing and we had one bathroom. We still had an outdoor toilet that sat out from the house in the back yard. I tore it down a couple of years back. Actually, it was hard to tear it down because I knew it symbolized a very different era of life which too many of us Appalachian people are all too familiar.&nbsp;We had terrible water as a kid. It was really bad to drink and terrible for washing clothes. The sulfur in the water would ruin our clothes. This meant my mother was always catching rainwater in large tubs outside the house. In dry weather when I was a child we would walk to the creek and carry water back to the house one bucket at a time. That always embarrassed me as a kid. I don't know why. Most of the people up and down the creek where I lived had to do the same thing plus many of these people did not have indoor plumbing either. Does this sound like white privilege?When school was in session at my elementary called Tomahawk, I sat with classmates every day who came to school hungry. The free school lunch program was the only decent meal they ever got to eat. Several boys in our school who did not have indoor plumbing came to school dirty but would often stand in the school bathroom washing their hands and faces before class. I'm sure some girls did the same thing Our little elementary school bathroom was a luxury to them. Does this sound like white privilege?&nbsp;I hear all this talk about white privilege. Growing up in an inner-city dwelling is surely filled with hardships but these dwellers at least have access to a real kitchen, running water, an indoor bathroom and even television and radio reception. These are luxuries that many Appalachian kids did not have growing up. Even today, in too many places in East, Kentucky and throughout Appalachia there are still families growing up without indoor bathrooms, access to water and surviving daily hunger. Internet cannot be found in too many Appalachian areas. These are the scenarios that have become ignored by media, government and employers. Thank God it's not even close to what it once was but I've been in the hollers of the mountains and seen enough to know poverty is still real and a cruel existence.&nbsp;Today, 14 of the 50 poorest counties in the United States are all from the same East Kentucky region that Johnson visited in 1964. For Martin county, "The per capita income&nbsp;is just over $18,000," according to the 2019 Census reporter. Twenty-six (26.3) percent of the county is still at the poverty level according to Data USA with a median household income of $35,125. The county is 99 percent white.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does this sound like a place of white privilege? McCreary county is located in the Daniel&nbsp;Boone&nbsp;National Forest in southern Kentucky along the Tennessee state border. The only county nationwide where most households earn less than $20,000 a year, McCreary&nbsp;is the poorest county in both Kentucky and the United States.&nbsp; The life expectancy is just 73. (USA Today) Does this sound like white privilege? The Washington Post reported that the life expectancy for the 5thdistrict in Eastern, Kentucky is under 73 making it the shortest life span expectancy in the United States. Owsley County Kentucky's life span expectancy has been reported to be 67.3 years while in San Jose, California the life expectancy is 83.&nbsp;The white privilege I enjoyed as a kid was that I was fortunate to be raised around hard-working people. My dad spent four hours a day driving to and from Holden, West Virginia to work in an underground coal mine. He spent over 30 years stooped over, on his knees or on his back in a dark coal mine. He made a living until at the age of 55 his health started failing him and he had to quit. He and my mother kept food on the table. We raised a garden. We had livestock. My family worked hard. My uncles and aunts farmed and worked whatever jobs they could find to make ends meet. My grandfather and grandmother Hinkle worked in a very small grocery store six days a week until he was 83 and she was 80. They worked hard until they died. No one had unemployment checks rolling in. No one had Social Security Disability checks. No one was receiving stimulus checks. There weren't food stamps or other federal or state money available to help anyone out. Our family had a mindset to work because that was our only means of surviving.&nbsp;I have never experienced anything like what some of my American friends have experienced growing up. Or, what some still experience. I'm certainly not intending to belittle your experiences or trying to "one up you" on who was poorer or had it harder. The Nebraska Department of Transportation says construction on Interstate 80 east of Brady is expected to begin on February 15.

The state's contractor, Midwest Coatings Company, will complete the work which includes crack sealing on both the eastbound and westbound lanes.

In the construction zone, between mile markers 198 and 205, expect lane closures and reduced speeds, as well as a 12-foot width restriction.

The anticipated completion date is the Spring of 2021.

annual survey has recently released municipal property tax levies for
2020-2021 and Kearney is proud to announce that it has remained the
lowest property tax levy among first


class
cities in the state. Cities are classified as first class if they
have more than 5,000 in population. Scottsbluff holds second place
for property tax levies at a rate 49% higher than Kearney.


The
City of Kearney has a property tax levy of .14887, or about 15¢ per
$100 of valuation. On a house valued at $200,000 the City receives
$298 in property taxes. This is especially significant considering
the scope and level of services provided in Kearney. “This shows
the value of local government to residents, the services received –
streets, parks, police, fire, library, and airport - are provided
with a very low property tax burden”, said City Manager Michael
Morgan.

Stan Clouse said, “The City Council is very proud of our City
administration and employees for once again having one of the lowest
municipal levies in the state. Kearney is always in the top two or
three cities in this ranking and it is a tribute to the diligence and
hard work of our City employees in managing day-to-day activities of

Kearney has lowest municipal property tax levy in Nebraska

The Nebraska State Patrol is urging caution in extremely cold temperatures throughout the state this week. Any motorist who becomes stranded should stay with their vehicle and call for help.

“The cold temperatures we are expecting throughout the state this week can be dangerous,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It’s critical that motorists are prepared in the event they become stranded while traveling. That preparation includes knowing what you need to do and having the proper items with you to help.”

If you become stranded on the road, stay with your vehicle and call for help. The vehicle is the best shelter from the elements and is the easiest thing for emergency personnel to spot while looking for a stranded motorist. Any motorist who becomes stranded can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 and speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.

All travelers are urged to&nbsp;keep a winter weather survival kit in their vehicle. Some basic items to include are: First Aid Kit, phone charger, ice scraper, shovel, small bag of sand, flashlight with extra batteries, blankets or sleeping bags, extra clothing and winter accessories, jumper cables, tow rope, tool kit, matches, candles, red flag or bandana, high energy or dehydrated foods, and bottled water.

Anyone traveling should use well-traveled routes and alert others to your destination, route, and estimated time of arrival. That information can assist in locating a stranded vehicle.

Over the weekend, troopers responded to well over 200 weather-related incidents on the road, as much of the state received two more rounds of snow. Troopers performed 179 motorist assists and responded to 31 crashes.

State officials said 48,982 doses of the vaccines were administered last week, up from 46,806 doses the week before. The state is working to speed up distribution of the vaccines.

So far, about 4.6% of the state's population has received both required doses of a vaccine. Nebraska said Monday that it has administered 232,896 doses of the vaccines.

Across the state, local health departments have begun vaccinating people 65 and older and some essential workers in the second phase of the campaign. Health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities were the first to get the shots.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska fell over the past two weeks from 849.14 new cases per day on Jan. 24 to 429.86 new cases per day on Sunday. The state said 193,826 virus cases and 1,968 deaths have been reported in Nebraska since the pandemic began.

The number of people hospitalized with the virus in the state declined again Sunday to 250 from the previous day's 272. That number hasn't been that low since early October. It has fallen steadily since peaking at 987 in November.

City crews are working to clear and sand streets, which is difficult due to underlying ice.&nbsp; We expect very cold temperatures and more snow throughout the week.&nbsp; Due to the amount of snow that has fallen in North Platte, City crews expect the snow removal efforts to continue for several days.&nbsp;

Snow Alert issued for City of North Platte

Paws-itive Partners is having the Paws On The Platte meet and greet this afternoon at 1 PM at Platte River Mall. However, the 24 fiberglass dog statues’ arrival is delayed because of poor road conditions.  

Statues are rescheduled to arrive on Wednesday, February 10.  The Icon Poly Manufacture truck will be in the mall parking lot at 6:00 pm.  Artists may pick up their unfinished dog statue at that time.

 </figure>Paws-itive Partners is having the Paws On The Platte meet and greet this afternoon at 1 PM at Platte River Mall. However, the 24 fiberglass dog statues’ arrival is delayed because of poor road conditions. Statues are rescheduled to arrive on Wednesday, February 10. The Icon Poly Manufacture truck will be in the mall parking lot at 6:00 pm. Artists may pick up their unfinished dog statue at that time. The public is invited to attend.
