Dangerous wind chills, 4 to 6 inches of snow expected for North Platte area

Three North Platte High School students earned Superior awards in the 2021 Journalism Education Association winter contest announced this week.&nbsp; 

Senior Jonathan Brouillette, newspaper layout editor, &nbsp;won the highest award for his original anti-tobacco advertisement “Vaping &amp; COVID.” It is the second time he’s won the award. Senior Sophia Walsh, newspaper editor in chief, received the highest recognition in newspaper layout for her cover design of the November issue.&nbsp; Senior Chloe Walchesky, yearbook staff writer, scored the top honor for her story on a senior athlete and poet. Other NPHS winners include: Excellent-- Nathaniel Crow (‘21), newspaper A&amp;E editor : Entertainment Review Writing Sophia Walsh (‘21), newspaper editor in chief: Headline Writing and Design Honorable Mention-- Elsacia Buck (‘22), yearbook photography editor: Sports/Action Photography Jonathan Dekleva (‘22), newspaper spotlight editor: Newspaper Feature Writing Across the state, 385 journalism students from 25 high schools earned an award in this year's JEA Nebraska Winter Contest.&nbsp; Yearbook, newspaper, literary magazine and broadcasting students across the state will receive certificates for entries judged Superior, Excellent and Honorable Mention. &nbsp;“It is one thing to share news within your school community, but quite another to be evaluated by a professional and deemed worthy of recognition,” said JEA state director Marsha Kalkowski. NPHS journalism students earn top awards 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Nebraska prison employee was arrested after she admitted to investigators that she gave an inmate a cell phone.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said Casey Bartels, 28, was arrested Tuesday at the Lincoln Correctional Center where she had worked since October.

According to court documents, investigators contacted Bartels after a cell phone was found in an inmate's cell that had been used for video chats with Bartels. Investigators said Bartels admitted buying the phone at Walmart and bringing it to the prison.

Bartels also told investigators she had delivered a package that she believed contained drugs to two other inmates.

Bartels resigned upon her arrest on suspicion of unauthorized communication with a prisoner, which is a felony. Her attorney declined to comment on the case Thursday.

The City of North Platte is issuing a SNOW ALERT, beginning at 6 p.m., on February 11, 2021.  Please take this time to remove all vehicles from the Emergency Snow Routes.  This includes all cars, trucks, boats, trailers, campers, etc.  Removal of all vehicles will assist city workers with snow removal.  Thank you for your cooperation.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Rapid City man is charged with setting a series of fired that destroyed an artist’s studio, a garage, vehicle and other property. 

Sixty-eight-year-old Raymond Andrzejewski was expected to appear in Pennington County Court Wednesday on four counts of arson. 

Police Capt. James Johns says Andrzejewski’s arrest is the result of “really exhaustive police work” that included interviews, surveillance, physical evidence found at the crime scenes and video footage. 

Two fires on Dec. 6 destroyed a garage, car, some outdoor gear, an artist’s studio and motorcycle. 

Another fire was discovered in the entryway to West Park Apartments on Dec. 31. A garage behind a nursing school was burned on Jan. 23.

Rapid City man charged in local arson spree

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Nebraska has dropped to its lowest level since the beginning of October.

The state said 230 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Wednesday, which continued the steady downward trend since the number peaked at 987 in November. The last time that number was lower was Oct. 1 when 227 people were hospitalized.

The number of new cases in the state has also been shrinking lately. Nebraska reported 374 new cases and four deaths Wednesday to give the state a total of 195,006 cases and 1,990 deaths. The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 686.29 new cases per day on Jan. 27 to 370 new cases per day on Wednesday.

In the past two weeks, more than 175,000 people have registered to be notified when they are eligible for the coronavirus vaccine since the&nbsp;<a href="http://https//vaccinate.ne.gov" target="_blank">vaccinate.ne.gov</a>&nbsp;site launched. Nebraska said Thursday that 5.3% of the state's population has received both required doses of a vaccine, and 258,562 total doses of the vaccine have been administered, including 12,004 on Wednesday.

Camp Maranatha invites families to 'Family Skate Night'

Over 1,200 food baskets were distributed Wednesday in Keith County thanks to the efforts of the Ogallala Rotary club.

Organizers say they are thankful for the partnership of Hot Meals USA who sent a truck full of fresh produce to help any family in need around this area.

They also thanked Mid-Plains Community College for allowing them to use their facility for this wonderful project, Ace Hardware for the use of a pallet jack and forklift, Badass Coffee for supplying coffee for all the volunteers, and, last but not least, all the amazing volunteers who braved the cold weather to make this service project possible. 

The club also received help and support from their fellow Rotarians from Grant and North Platte

Ogallala Rotary club distributes over 1,200 food baskets

United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska, Joseph P. Kelly, has submitted his resignation to President Biden effective February 28, 2021.&nbsp; Joe Kelly was appointed U.S. attorney by former President Donald Trump and confirmed to the position in the U.S. Senate.&nbsp; He served more than three years as the top federal prosecutor in the state, his office announced Wednesday. The Department of Justice and President Biden asked for the resignations of all U.S. Attorney’s by the end of February announcing they were beginning the process of replacing the political appointees with those of the new administration.&nbsp;

U.S. attorneys are the chief prosecutors in their respective districts. They are also involved in civil litigation where the United States is a party.&nbsp; There are 93 U.S. Attorneys throughout the United States and its territories.&nbsp; Despite its large geographic size, the state of Nebraska is served by only one presidentially appointed U.S. Attorney.

Until President Biden nominates a successor and that person is confirmed by the Senate, an Acting United States Attorney designated by the Department of Justice will lead the office.

“The employees in the United States Attorney’s Office for Nebraska work with their federal, tribal, state and local law enforcement partners to protect the residents of Nebraska,&nbsp; The office has a long tradition of successfully prosecuting violent criminals, on-line child predators, human traffickers and fraudsters who target our vulnerable adults,” said Joe Kelly. “It has been a pleasure to work with the staff in the office and other members of the federal court system.”

Night of drinks, desserts and music planned at Prairie Arts Center's 'Nightcap' event

Governor Pete Ricketts highlighted the expansion of the State’s One Stop License Portal (<a href="https://onestop.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">onestop.nebraska.gov</a>). The One Stop Portal is a resource improving the customer experience for business owners and entrepreneurs who are working to grow their businesses in Nebraska. &nbsp;With the addition of resources for non-code state agencies, the website provides an expanded one-stop shop where business operators can go to find all of their needed filings.

“The expansion of the One Stop License Portal furthers my administration’s mission to create opportunity through more effective, more efficient, and customer-focused state government,” said Gov. Ricketts.&nbsp; “The addition of filings, forms, and services for non-code state agencies will make it easier for businesses to work with the State.”

The Governor’s Office, in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Administrative Services’ Center of Operational Excellence (COE), various state agencies, and Nebraska Interactive, launched the One Stop Portal in 2019.&nbsp; The website simplifies the licensing process for businesses and startups by providing a user-friendly tool where any entrepreneur or business owner can find the licenses they need to get started.&nbsp; Since its launch, the State has expanded the resources and tools available to businesses while increasing the site’s functionality and enhancing the customer experience for portal users.

Winter Weather, Wind Chill Advisories issued for this weekend

The Federal Pharmacy Program announced they will include three locations in the Panhandle. Alliance Community Pharmacy and Walmart in Chadron and Scottsbluff will be receiving the COVID vaccine. This is in addition to the current vaccine providers that have been offering COVID vaccines in the Panhandle.

They will be following the same vaccine timeline issued by Governor Ricketts with current eligibility being health care personnel, long-term care, and individuals 65 and older.

“We encourage all Panhandle residents over the age of 18 that have not registered yet to please do so at&nbsp;vaccinate.ne.gov. Each new opportunity to expand access to residents getting the COVID vaccine is the goal but we want people to remain patient as new systems are underway,” said Kim Engel, Panhandle Public Health District Director.

If you have already registered, rest assured, you are on the list and do not need to register again. If you need help registering, call either of these numbers: 833-998-2275 or 531-249-1873. The Spanish version will be coming soon.

Ten plans and one interactive map explore different facets of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission park system, which dates to 1921 when Chadron State Park became the first of 76 park areas in the state.

The lesson plans — adapted for classrooms, online learning or informal settings — are downloadable and support state standards in a fun and interesting way. Students can diversify their knowledge by exploring the state parks around them, in some cases by taking a trip to the great outdoors. Each plan is designed to encourage youth to be engaged actively in parks.

“From our rich history to our unique geography, there is something for everyone at your Nebraska State Parks,” said Amanda Filipi, Game and Parks educator at the Wildcat Hills Nature Center and designer of the lessons. “Opportunity is available to both the inquisitive and the bold.”

In this type of fraud, scammers target and take advantage of people
looking for companionship or romantic partners and con them out of
their money. Romance scammers search dating websites, apps, chat
rooms, and social networking sites in their efforts to build a
relationship.


Romance
scams have resulted in one of the highest amounts of financial losses
when compared to other internet-facilitated crimes. Nationally, in
2020, there were close to 24,000 victims who reported losses to the
FBI exceeding $605,000,000. In Nebraska and Iowa, close to 300
victims reported losses exceeding $5,400,000.

scams. On Thursday, February 11, 2021, a special agent from our Cyber
Task Force will be available to speak to the media about examples of
romance fraud, those who are most susceptible to the crime and tips

FBI issues warning about 'romance scams'

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska should see at least 43 retail pharmacies participating in a new federal program to help provide coronavirus vaccinations, although state officials don't have a good way to communicate with all of them to avoid mistakes, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Wednesday.

Ricketts said he's grateful for the additional 5,700 doses Nebraska will get through the federal program, but voiced concerns about how all the different businesses will coordinate with the state's efforts. He said the federal program didn't include a clear way for states and retailers to ensure they're on the same page.

"This is an area we do have concerns about," Ricketts, a Republican, said at a news conference to discuss the state's pandemic response. The coordination is critical to ensure "good information is going back and forth between those pharmacies and the state so that we can keep track of who's been vaccinated."

An email request for comment from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wasn't immediately returned.

Nebraska retailers participating in the program include Walmart and independent pharmacies throughout the state. Walmart announced Tuesday that it will start vaccinations Friday at more than a dozen of its Nebraska stores, all in smaller cities outside of Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island.

Ricketts' comments followed a phone conference Tuesday between U.S. governors and federal officials about new efforts to distribute vaccine doses. Ricketts said he didn't have any concerns about a similar program that will send additional vaccine doses directly to community health centers, because Nebraska doesn't have that many and Ricketts said state officials should be able to work with them without any issues.

State officials also reported progress Wednesday on their efforts to deliver second doses to people who still need one to become fully immune to the virus. State officials&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/public-health-health-pete-ricketts-nebraska-coronavirus-pandemic-3e6f59269034fd8b69cf464cae9a7dc1" target="_blank">reported last week</a>&nbsp;that roughly 6,000 residents hadn't received their second injection within the recommended time window. On Wednesday, Nebraska Chief Medical Officer Gary Anthone said the number had been reduced to about 4,300.

Meanwhile, Omaha officials on Tuesday extended a citywide mask mandate for another three months to help limit the spread of the coronavirus. The City Council voted unanimously to extend the requirement through May 25.

The council also rejected a proposed change to the rule that would have exempted children aged 5 to 12. Currently, the mandate generally requires everyone 5 and older to wear masks any time they can't stay six feet apart from others indoors.

Council members Aimee Melton and Brinker Harding said they proposed the amendment to offer more flexibility to parents and schools to make judgment calls on whether to exempt young children from wearing masks.

Councilman Ben Gray said he opposed the change because infectious disease experts recommended maintaining the city's mask mandate.

The state said 5% of Nebraska's population has now received both required doses of a coronavirus vaccine and 246,623 doses have been administered.

Nebraska reported 462 new virus cases and eight deaths Wednesday for a total of 194,632 cases and 1,986 deaths in the state. The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 767.86 new cases per day on Jan. 26 to 390.43 new cases per day on Tuesday.

System technology employees discovered the problem on Sept. 20, finding that an unauthorized party gained access to Nebraska Medicine and UNMC's shared network using malware between Aug. 27 and Sept. 20. The incident led to the postponement of patient appointments for a time and required staff in the system's hospitals and clinics to chart by hand.

The incident involved one or more items of information such as names, addresses, health insurance and clinical information being compromised. A limited number of patients' Social Security numbers also were compromised. The incident did not result in unauthorized access to the health system's shared electronic medical record application, health system officials said.

The North Platte Police Department is again asking for assistance in locating 15-year-old Kane Vieyra. 

 Kane ran away again on February 9, and was last seen in the 2300 Block of East 2nd Street. 

 Kane is 5'0" and 110 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has promised to honor the will of voters to legalize pot for medical use, just not this year.

 The Republican governor announced a plan to delay legalization until July 1, 2022. 

She says she did not have enough time to study the issue and implement a program. 

Medical cannabis was supposed to be legalized on July 1 of this year after voters passed a ballot initiative in November. 

Republican legislative leadership supports Noem's plan. 

House Speaker Spencer Gosch unveiled a bill early Wednesday to set up a committee to study implementation.

South Dakota governor plans to delay medical marijuana law a year

Police in Kearney are investigating the death of a local infant.

According to Kearney police, at
approximately 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, the Good
Samaritan Ambulance was called to a residence located at 520 West 14th
Street in Southwest Kearney, for an infant that was not breathing.


Police say officers were the first to arrive on the scene and
discovered that a one-month-old baby girl had died.

Police say the initial
investigation indicates that this death is accidental. 

The
case remains under investigation by the Kearney Police Department and
the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.

The
Buffalo County Attorney’s Office has ordered an autopsy in this
case.
