OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Nebraska has remained relatively stable over the past two weeks, but it remains near record levels, which is putting significant stress on the state's hospitals.

Nebraska officials said 911 people were hospitalized with the virus on Saturday. Over the past two weeks, that figure has gone up and down between Saturday's low point and the record of 987 set on Nov. 20.

But officials worry that Thanksgiving travel and gatherings could lead to a new spike in virus cases in the coming weeks, and the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 remains nearly double the 528 reported a month ago.

The state reported 1,257 new cases Saturday. Nebraska has had 125,323 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 989 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

Nebraska had the fifth-highest rate of new cases Saturday. Over the past week, one person in every 157 people in the state was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 2,032.71 new cases per day on Nov. 14 to 1,772.14 new cases per day on Saturday.

(AP)-Black Friday online sales hit a new record this year as pandemic-wary Americans filled virtual carts instead of real ones.

Consumers spent an estimated $9 billion on U.S. retail websites on Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks online shopping. That was a 22% increase over the previous record of $7.4 billion set in 2019.

Meanwhile, traffic to physical stores plummeted as retailers tried to prevent crowds by cutting their hours and limiting doorbuster deals. U.S. store visits dropped by 52% on Black Friday, according to Sensormatic Solutions, a retail tracker. Traffic was slower in the Northeast and West than in the Midwest and South, said Brian Field, Sensormatic’s senior director of global retail consulting.

Jewelry and footwear saw some of the biggest in-person sales declines, according to RetailNext, a shopping tracker. Apparel sales were down 50%, while sales of home goods fell by 39%.

Even with that drop, Black Friday will still likely end up as one of the biggest in-person shopping days in the U.S. this year, Field said. He thinks many people will still shop for the holidays in person but will choose mid-week days when crowds are smaller. Heavier in-store discounts and concerns about lengthy shipping times could also draw shoppers closer to Christmas.

“Black Friday had a lot to lose, but some of it is going to be distributed throughout the holiday season,” Field said.

One trend that could remain after the pandemic ends is that stores could remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, Field said. Since 2013, a growing number of stores had opened on Thanksgiving to match their competitors and get a jump start on Black Friday. But it’s typically not a big day for retailers, and this year many stayed closed. Thanksgiving store traffic was down 95%, he said.

Field said stores may be rethinking the cost of paying employees and opening on Thanksgiving when they could easily make up for those sales online.

“I wonder, now that we’re seeing a season where they were able to cut the cord on it, if it will give them pause,” he said.

Adobe expects Monday to be the largest online sales day in U.S. history, with estimated spending of $10.8 billion to $12.7 billion.

One reason for the big numbers is that people are shopping online for things such as groceries and alcohol that they bought in person before the pandemic, Adobe said. As for more traditional gifts, Hot Wheels cars, Lego sets, Apple AirPods, Samsung televisions and video games are among the biggest sellers.

Big retailers such as Walmart and Target benefited from the surge, but small retailers did as well, Adobe said. Sales at big stores surged by 403% on Thanksgiving and Black Friday compared to the daily average in October, but sales at smaller retailers also grew by 349%.

Black Friday sees record online as US shoppers stay home

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has agreed to pay $850,000 to a woman and her daughter who were attacked by one of two convicted sex offenders who escaped from a maximum-security prison by hiding in laundry carts.

The Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/crime-and-courts/state-of-nebraska-settles-lawsuit-for-850-000-over-2016-assault-by-escaped-prison-inmate/article_340919e7-46b9-543e-a916-b51577de0d90.html" target="_blank">reports&nbsp;</a>that the attorney for Cindi and Christine Allen called the June 2016 case a "tragedy" that has continued to cause complications for the woman.

After escaping from the Lincoln Correctional Center, Armon Dixon found his way to an apartment where 61-year-old Cindi Allen lived. He entered through an unlocked patio door, grabbing and threatening Allen's 21-year-old daughter. When the women resisted, Dixon beat them with a blunt object.

"This had a profound effect on them and it's continuing to do that," said Lincoln attorney Terry Dougherty.

Eventually, Cindi Allen, was able to flee from the apartment and alert a couple parked in the parking lot. Her escape distracted Dixon enough that her daughter was able to crawl into a bathroom and lock the door.

Dixon fled from the scene and was apprehended by police about four hours later.

The Nebraska Attorney General's Office, which defended the state, declined to comment Wednesday on the settlement, which was approved in September.

The course will explain how to use social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, to promote products and services and reach customers.

Students will learn about brand identity and the elements that are important in creating credibility and trust with consumers, both online and off.

The classes are taught by marketing expert Tiffany Roe. Roe is a MPCC alum. After Mid-Plains, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Ottawa University.

As a small business owner, herself, Roe is passionate about digital marketing and the advantages it can have in helping small businesses make cost effective changes that improve profits.

The classes are $45 each or three for $119, the latter of which also includes a 45-minute consultation with Roe.

The cities issued the orders as the number of virus cases, hospitalizations and deaths surged over the last month.

The local mandates mean more than half of Nebraska's 1.95 million people live in communities that require masks to be worn in indoor public settings,&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/7-of-nebraskas-10-largest-cities-now-mandate-masks-find-out-where/article_a8259991-4ca0-5ce8-835e-6df62bbd6053.html" target="_blank">according to the Omaha World-Herald</a>.

Most cities with mandates are in eastern and central Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk, Columbus and Hastings.

City officials in the more conservative western Nebraska have said they were encouraging people to wear masks but not requiring it, which is the approach Ricketts has taken. Among those cities are North Platte, Scottsbluff, Gering and Alliance.

Ricketts, a Republican, has repeatedly refused to issue a statewide mandate despite pleas from many of the state's public health officials. Ricketts said he doesn't think a statewide mandate is appropriate because it would create resentment and some people would resist it, although he noted that the state has enacted a mask requirement for certain indoor businesses.

Nebraska reported 2,876 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, a decline from the record daily highs earlier this month but still a much larger number than usual. The number of daily active hospitalizations dropped slightly, to 931, according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">state's online tracking portal</a>.

Nebraska has had 122,952 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 982 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

7 of Nebraska's 10 largest cities have local mask mandates

TECUMSEH, Neb.-Authorities are searching for a Nebraska inmate who did not return Thursday to the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln as scheduled from his work assignment.

Brandon Imes, 33, was serving a one-year sentence on charges from Gage County that include possession of a controlled substance, the Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/authorities-searching-for-missing-community-corrections-inmate/article_4f010f1e-cc65-5c50-8839-99bd37dcde12.html" target="_blank">reported</a>.

He had a tentative release date of Dec. 14.

The Department of Correctional Services said in a news release that his electronic monitoring device was disabled.

The Community Corrections Center-Lincoln is one of the state's two community custody facilities where inmates are allowed to participate in work opportunities, attend school and religious services without direct supervision.

This year’s program ran from June 1, 2020 to October 31, 2020. “This was an unconventional year for the Passport Program, but it ended up providing people with an opportunity to still explore the state at a level they were comfortable with and in a socially distant way,” said Madison Johnson, Nebraska Passport program coordinator. “I’m happy that this program was able to provide some positivity and support to local businesses during a difficult year.” 2020 Nebraska Passport Statistics: •&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;From submitted Passports, 205,229 total stamps were collected.&nbsp; •&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The average number of stamps submitted per participant was 28.&nbsp; •&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Participants included residents from 460 Nebraska communities and 40 states. •&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Passport participants ranged in age from 6 months to 94-years-old. •&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Participants submitted over 850 stories of their travels on&nbsp;<a href="http://nebraskapassport.com/" target="_blank">nebraskapassport.com</a>. Officials say the rides and concession stand will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The Governor also encouraged Nebraskans to take part in “Small Business Saturday” this weekend.&nbsp; As people stay home to stay healthy, local businesses are seeing far less foot traffic than usual.&nbsp; “Small Business Saturday” is a nationwide campaign mobilizing people to shop local on Saturday, November 28th.&nbsp; Nebraskans can call ahead to arrange orders or shop online to reduce in-person contact while supporting small businesses on Saturday.&nbsp; Dave Rippe, owner of Queen City Development Corporation in Hastings and former director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, joined the Governor to talk about how the community of Hastings plans to celebrate “Small Business Saturday.”

Gov. Ricketts also announced that he has issued an executive order to allow government boards, commissions, and other public bodies to meet by videoconference or teleconference. Gov. Ricketts encourages Nebraskans to support Small Business Saturday

“Nebraska State Troopers work tirelessly to keep roads safe, but the effort doesn’t stop at the Nebraska border,” said Captain Dain Hicks, Commander of Troop B, which encompasses northeast Nebraska. “Our partnership with the Iowa State Patrol is designed to maintain safe roads for all motorists traveling in the area this Thanksgiving.”

“The Iowa State Patrol is dedicated to reducing fatal and serious crashes by focusing our attention on the most common factors; excessive speed, impaired drivers, distracted driving, and seatbelt use,” said Lieutenant Mindy L. Coe, Iowa State Patrol – District 5. “As we team together, it is our hope that travelers will keep these factors in mind this Holiday season and arrive at their destinations safely.”

The campaign will include high-visibility patrols for both agencies, focused on major highways, such as Highways 20, 30, 81, and 275 in Nebraska and Highways 20 and 75, along with Interstate 29, in Iowa.&nbsp;

All motorists are urged to follow traffic safety laws during their travel, including following posted speed limits, avoiding distracted or impaired driving, and always wearing a seat belt. Motorists in either state can dial *55 or 800-525-5555 to reach the State Patrol Helpline for their respective state.

NSP, ISP team up for Thanksgiving highway safety campaign

The wet spring offered only a tiny window for planting, so when North Dakota farmer Paul Ivesdal fell ill with the coronavirus he knew the timing couldn’t be worse.

The 63-year-old man knew if he didn’t recover quickly and plant his crop of wheat, barley, canola and flax, it could mean an end to his decades of farming 2,300 acres just south of the Canadian border. But his condition deteriorated and, due to the bad weather, even his neighbors had no time to help.

“We didn’t get some crop in,” Ivesdal said. “It just got too late and started raining again.”

That’s when Farm Rescue stepped in. When Ivesdal was rushed to a hospital where he spent eight days on a ventilator, volunteers from the nonprofit planted his crops and made sure his farm would endure.

Ivesdal spent the summer in rehabilitation, regaining the strength and ability to walk, and he said he tires more easily than before, but that he plans to continue working the land.

“If we wouldn’t have got what we did, I don’t know if I would have kept on farming,” he said. “I’d like to farm for a couple more years but if it wouldn’t have been for them we might have just decided to quit.”

The founder of Farm Rescue, Bill Gross, is a North Dakota native who grew up on a farm, but he did not follow in his parents footsteps. Gross went to college, became a pilot and has flown Boeing 747s for United Parcel Service for 27 years.

But in 2005, he launched Farm Rescue, inspired by the 1980s farm crisis that forced his parents to sell land and most of their cattle. He traveled to farm shows where he set up a card table and asked for donations. With help from a John Deere dealership, he bought a tractor and that first year provided assistance for 10 farming families.

Over the years, individual donors and big companies, such as Deere &amp; Company and Chevrolet trucks, have stepped up, and Farm Rescue now has 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

“My heart never left the farming community,” Gross said.

The group has given assistance to about 700 farm families in the last 15 years in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. The group usually helps farmers beset by injuries, illness or natural disasters, but volunteers have this year been helping those taken out of commission by COVID-19.

“We’ve helped several farmers that have had COVID, including some who have been on a ventilator for three or four weeks and have survived and are back farming now,” Gross said.

The pandemic has rippled through the farm economy, leading to yet more bankruptcies.

“It’s affected farmers drastically. They were already at what I feel was the breaking point,” Gross said. “There’s been persistently low commodity prices, natural disasters and now COVID, and then when you add a major injury or illness to the challenges they already faced, it just can be overwhelming to them ... financially and emotionally.”

Farmers and ranchers can apply for help from Farm Rescue by filing out an online application, and some are referred to the organization by concerned friends. Gross said many farmers initially resist the offer of assistance.

“They’re prideful, hard-working people and typically don’t want to ask for help,” Gross said. “Sometimes it takes convincing only because, God bless them, they always feel that there is someone else that needs the help more than them.”

The group is planning a country music&nbsp;<a href="https://www.deere.com/en/our-company/news-and-announcements/newsroom/TheFarmMustGoOn/#howtowatch" target="_blank">benefit</a>&nbsp;concert on Dec. 9, to be streamed live on YouTube from the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville and featuring performers including Dustin Lynch, Maddie &amp; Tae, Mickey Guyton, Travis Denning and Tyler Farr. Viewers can watch the event for free, but all donations will go to Farm Rescue.

Farm Rescue shifts to help farmers sickened by coronavirus

North Platte is partnering with North Platte Area Habitat for
Humanity on their annual Nacho Navidad fund-raising promotion. 



Each year Taco John’s
partners with a charity during its festive Nachos Navidad holiday
promotion with a portion of each Nachos Navidad purchase dedicated to
a local charity.&nbsp; The
desire to help LOCAL people in their communities was a predominant
driver in Taco John’s choosing North Platte Area Habitat for
Humanity as their charity partner for the promotion. Taco John’s
goal is two-fold: &nbsp;they want to raise funds to donate directly
to a worthwhile organization that touches so many people’s lives.
&nbsp;Second—and equally important—they hope this promotion will
aid in the community awareness of the efforts of North Platte Area
Habitat for Humanity and the impact in their communities.&nbsp;
NPAHFH has built 57 houses in North Platte over the last twenty-two
years providing safe, decent affordable shelter to low income
families and contributing in excess of $700,000 to the tax rolls.

North Platte Taco Johns to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The coronavirus pandemic is prompting a change in plans for the University of Nebraska's $155 million football training facility project.

Phase 1 calls for completing the new building "with shelled space at the base of a new North Stadium tower."

Phase 2 will build out the Academic Center and training area in the new building, and calls for the completion of renovations at the Hawks Championship Center.

The new building is the centerpiece of the new training facility and will house the football program's locker room, weight room and much of the space for training, academics and life skills.

The football team would occupy the new building by August 2023. That's a year later than in the original plan announced in September 2019.

Changes proposed in NU training facility project

As we approach holiday celebrations, the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD) is reporting more new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

WCHD reported 140 news cases in their jurisdiction since November 20.

As the cases continue to climb, Great Plains Health and other area hospitals are reporting near capacity levels. WCDHD data shows there are currently 42 people hospitalized. Great Plains Health says four people are currently on ventilators at their facility. The intensive care unit is about 96 percent full.

WCDHD reports 140 new COVID cases since Friday

Looking at the numbers, and seeing the state of his pastures, Jim Jenkins knew it was time for a change.

The Callaway rancher turned to prescribed fire after his efforts to remove eastern redcedar trees from his land mechanically proved too costly and ineffective at stopping the spread. However, using prescribed fire on a larger scale was unfamiliar.

“It was complex and I was a bit scared of it, because I’d just never been around burning,” Jenkins said.

The learning curve to use prescribed fire can be intimidating for landowners, said Brian Teeter, a prescribed fire coordinator with Pheasants Forever. Yet, every year, conservation professionals across the state help many landowners through the process. In recent years, Jenkins became one of them.

Jenkins knew the local Natural Resources Conservation Service office provided help for landowners looking to burn, and so several years ago, he sat down with Lisa Clarke McMillan, a soil conservationist at the agency, and signed up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The program provides incentive payments for brush management, deferred grazing and prescribed burning.

McMillan helped him develop a burn plan and visited his ranch to lay out where the burn would take place. Then, with McMillan’s guidance, Jenkins began prepping for the burn, creating a firebreak and cutting and strategically placing trees to facilitate a better burn.

“I would tell anybody that it’s important that you talk to people like Lisa,” Jenkins said. “If you can spend some time with them, it’s really helpful because they’ve been through literally hundreds of burns.”

Last fall, at McMillan’s recommendation, Jenkins attended a prescribed fire workshop led by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Pheasants Forever, where he learned the basics of prescribed fire, including techniques, equipment and common terms.

At the workshop, Jenkins also networked with other landowners and resource professionals. Teeter was one of them and offered Jenkins the use of a trailer of equipment for his burn. He also got Jenkins in touch with several prescribed burn associations, groups of landowners who team up to conduct prescribed burns in their communities.

Last spring, using his new connections, Jenkins went to a couple of prescribed burns.

“I was impressed at how relatively easy the burn goes,” he said. “Once you have all the preparation work done and you’ve got a good crew and you’ve got the right conditions, the burn itself is almost anticlimactic.”

Jenkins hoped to conduct his burn in late February or early March, but ultimately decided to wait for better weather conditions and to finish more prep work. He’s looking forward to holding his first burn next spring.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “I don’t drink, but I might consider having some champagne or something.”

It takes time and effort to learn how to use prescribed fire, Jenkins said. However, “if you’re willing to invest the time, there are plenty of people out there willing to help you,” he said.

They do it because prescribed fire is beneficial: It offers a boost to pasture productivity, is a valuable conservation tool, improves wildlife habitat, reduces wildfire risk and eliminates invasive species.“If somebody wants to get a fire on the ground in the state right now, it’s a high priority of most every land management or conservation organization in the state,” Teeter said. “They’re never alone.”
