LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska received its first shipment of the new coronavirus vaccine on Monday and expects to get more than 100,000 doses this month to treat front-line health care workers, state officials said.

Dr. Gary Anthone, Nebraska's chief medical officer, said initial shipments arrived at two hospitals by mid-morning.

"We only know that we expect to receive ... 15,600 within the next 24 to 48 hours," Anthone said at a news conference with Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Nebraska's distribution plan calls for the first vaccine doses to go to front-line health workers and other key professions,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/public-health-health-nebraska-coronavirus-pandemic-b0f4f93d8cdbbada20c5830864861f10" target="_blank">including meatpacking workers and teachers</a>. Ricketts said the general public likely won't be eligible until April.

The Pfizer vaccine is set to go to eight Nebraska hospitals, which state officials have refused to identify, citing security concerns.

CHI Health Vice President of Pharmacy Mike Tiesi said four boxes of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine- 3,900 doses - arrived at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy hospital in Omaha on Monday morning. The hospital group-administered its first shots to health care workers Monday afternoon.

CHI expects to receive additional doses soon at its St. Elizabeth hospital in Lincoln, Tiesi said, and its St. Francis hospital in Grand Island expects to receive a shipment Tuesday.

"This is the hope we have been looking for, waiting for," Tiesi said. "I can't wait until this gets into the hands - or the arms - of the general public later this spring."

Officials at Bryan Health in Lincoln said they also received their first shipment Monday and vaccinated several employees that afternoon.

Dr. Bill Johnson was excited to be one of the first because of what it means for the fight against the coronavirus.

"It's important to continue to stay diligent. But this is truly the one way we have to battle viruses, with a vaccine. Today is the beginning of the end of this, in my opinion," said Johnson, who is a pulmonologist for Bryan Health.

Respiratory therapist Julie Bornemeier said she wanted to get the shot because she has seen too many people needlessly die from the virus.

"I'm excited for more people to get vaccinated so we can hopefully put an end to this," Bornemeier said.

The eight hospitals that are receiving the vaccine were chosen based on their ability to store Pfizer's vaccine in extreme cold, Anthone said. They will distribute doses to nine other hospitals. A vaccine produced by Moderna Inc., which is expected next week pending federal authorization for emergency use, will go to hospitals in rural areas that don't have that storage capability.

Shipments expected later this month have faced some delays, but Anthone said he still expects Nebraska to get 104,000 by month's end.

The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Nebraska dipped below 700 Sunday for the first time since early November, but the total remains high.

The state said 692 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sunday, down from 711 a day earlier. That's the first time since Nov. 4 that the number of virus patients in hospitals was below 700. The total is still about triple what it was on Oct. 1.

Nebraska reported 1,173 new virus cases and eight new deaths Sunday to give the state 148,861 cases and 1,373 deaths since the pandemic began.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 1,756.29 new cases per day on Nov. 29 to 1,302.86 new cases per day on Sunday.

Mid-Plains Community College nursing students wrap gifts for the Santa Cop program Monday at the North Platte Senior Center.

This is the 35th year for the Santa Cop program, which provides gifts to children in need throughout Lincoln County. A total of 97 local children will benefit from the charity this holiday season. Each will receive four gifts.

Recipients are identified by The Salvation Army of North Platte, and the gifts are donated by community members and local businesses.

The North Platte Police Department will begin distributing the presents Wednesday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska officially split its Electoral College votes for the 2nd time in history on Monday, awarding one of its five votes to President-elect Joe Biden and the remaining four to President Donald Trump.

Biden won the popular vote in the Omaha area's 2nd Congressional District, a feat last achieved by Barack Obama during his first presidential run in 2008.

The vote in a half-full state Capitol hearing room drew cheers from audience members when elector Precious McKesson, a Democratic Party activist, cast her votes for Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. The vote went largely as planned, with no one contesting the state's results.

Republicans consistently dominate in Nebraska's statewide races and rural congressional districts, but Democrats have shown they can compete in Lincoln and parts of Omaha.

McKesson said Biden's win in the 2nd District shows that Democrats can still prevail in some Nebraska races, but she added: "We still have a lot of work to do."

Nebraska and Maine are the only two states where it's possible to divide its votes among presidential candidates. In Nebraska, two are awarded based on the winner of the statewide popular vote while the other three are allocated to the victor in each congressional district.

Nebraska Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kleeb said the Biden-Harris ticket claimed the 2nd District in part because they appealed to moderate and conservative voters as well as progressives.

"They made sure there is space for all Democrats, and they really spoke to issues across ideology, and I think that's exactly how they're going to govern," she said.

Kleeb also credited the Biden campaign for working closely with local and state party officials who know the political landscape.

Republicans in the officially nonpartisan Legislature will likely try to eliminate Nebraska's Electoral College system next year, bringing back the winner-take-all approach of most other states. They face an uphill battle, however, because Democrats in the minority have enough votes to block such a move with a filibuster.

Lawmakers will also redraw Nebraska's political boundaries in 2021 as part of their once-a-decade redistricting ritual, which could reshape the 2nd District to make it less friendly to Democrats - although Democrats may be able to block those efforts as well.

Republican elector Steve Nelson, a farmer from Axtell, said Nebraska's unusual split reflected both the level of interest in the 2020 election and the growing political power of Omaha. He said he respected the Nebraska vote, but questioned whether other states should review their voting practices. Trump has made numerous unfounded, inaccurate claims about the election in an effort to undermine Biden's win.

"I think it's reasonable to expect that we should look into some of the questions raised around the country to find out if those were legitimate concerns or not," Nelson said after casting his at-large vote for Trump.

Nebraska hospitals get 1st shipments of coronavirus vaccine

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (NSP)-Multiple law enforcement agencies worked together to arrest a subject who had been involved in multiple pursuits this weekend. The effort involved the Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks, and the sheriff’s offices of Blaine, Cherry, Brown, Logan, Hooker, and Thomas counties, as well as the Thomas County Volunteer Fire Department.

At approximately 8:00 p.m. Friday, a trooper attempted to stop a Dodge pickup for speeding on Highway 83, north of Thedford. The vehicle refused to stop and the trooper initiated a pursuit. During the pursuit, the vehicle drove through a pasture fence and into a field.

At that point, the trooper discontinued the pursuit and additional troopers and sheriff’s deputies responded to search for the subject. During the pursuit, a sport motorcycle had fallen from the bed of the pickup. The bike was located and impounded. The subject was not located Friday night, but law enforcement remained in the area to watch for the vehicle.

Late Saturday morning, the Brown and Cherry County Sheriff’s Offices were also involved in a pursuit with the same Dodge pickup, but were unable to apprehend the suspect. Law enforcement officers remained in the area and at approximately 4:00 p.m. Saturday, the suspect was located with his vehicle on Highway 91 north of Dunning. The vehicle had run out of gas.

The suspect provided false information about his identity, but a trooper was able use the mobile AFIS fingerprinting device to positively identify the suspect as Dylan Yohe, 23, of Wichita, Kansas. Yohe was placed in custody for an outstanding warrant from Kansas.

Yohe was also arrested for numerous violations in relation to the pursuits, including flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, no operator’s license, criminal mischief, trespassing, criminal impersonation, open alcohol container, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Yohe was lodged in Custer County Jail.

The Canteen Cabaret is a variety-style
show of music and theater that will be presented on the Playhouse’s

 “We wanted to offer the community music and
entertainment while keeping community members safe from spreading
Covid-19,” said Tyler Cronin, director of the productions. “The
casts of the shows will be small in number—three to four
performers. They will follow social distancing precautions as set
forward by the West Central Health District.”

A new show will be presented each month
from now until May 2021. 

“We wanted to re-ignite the canteen spirit
of lifting the spirits of others during dark times,” remarked
Cronin. 

If community members would like to give a free-will donation,
they can do so either online or by mailing donations to the
playhouse. Funds will be used toward renovations of the historic
building. “It is truly a unique venue,” said Cronin, “we want
to be able to maintain and care for the theater so it will be there
for generations to come.”

The first program, titled “Light,”
will premiere Friday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m. Performers are Kristin
Simpson, Dylan Rogge, Christopher Terry, and  Melissa Mitchell, from
NPCC’s Music Department. Mary Lynn Horst will be the accompanist.

You have probably heard it’s a bad idea to eat uncooked dough because it contains raw eggs.&nbsp; But raw flour can also make you sick, says Londa Nwadike, Extension Food Safety Specialist for Kansas State University.&nbsp; As the holiday season approaches, resist the temptation to taste uncooked batter or dough, no matter how delicious it might be.

Bacteria from animal waste and other sources can contaminate grain in fields or throughout the grain transportation and flour production system.&nbsp; According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, flour from milled grain is typically not treated to kill bacteria.&nbsp; That means it’s not safe to eat until properly cooked.

You might have licked cake batter or cookie dough from spoons lots of times with no ill effects. But some haven’t been so lucky.&nbsp; In recent years, more than 80 people grew sick from E. coli bacteria linked to contaminated raw flour, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.&nbsp; More than 10 million pounds of flour and flour-containing products were recalled, including bread, pastry and pancake mixes.

What about cookie dough ice cream?&nbsp; Commercially purchased cookie dough ice cream should be safe because it contains heat-treated flour and pasteurized eggs.&nbsp; But that might not be true of store-bought cookie dough for baking.&nbsp; An outbreak traced to prepackaged raw cookie dough sickened 72 people, many of them were hospitalized. Bacteria have changed over the years, so they may be more likely to cause ill effects now than in the past.

The FDA offers safety tips for preparing cookies, pies, cakes and other foods containing flour:

• Don’t eat uncooked dough, batter or other foods containing raw flour.

• Be sure children don’t eat or taste dough used in crafts.

• Make sure foods containing flour are cooked to the proper temperature.&nbsp; Follow recipes or package directions.

• As with raw meat, keep raw flour or eggs separate from ready-to-eat foods.

• Clean bowls, utensils, countertops and other surfaces thoroughly after use.&nbsp; Wash hands often.

So, say "no" to raw dough, back away from the batter until it is properly cooked, and do not let children play with or eat raw dough.

NEW YORK (AP) — Google users in the U.S., Europe, India and other parts of the world were briefly unable to access their Gmail accounts, watch YouTube videos or get to their online documents during an outage Monday.

Tens of thousands of complaints popped up around 7 a.m. Eastern along the East Coast of the U.S. The vast majority of those people, about 90%, could not log in, according to the site Downdetector.

The inability to sign in prevented users from accessing other platforms through Google, including mobile video games.

The disruption was an early jolt on the East Coast for parents who were waking children up for school Monday. Millions of students are relying on Google for online instruction during the pandemic, including platforms like Google Docs.

The problem appeared to clear up just before 8 a.m.

“The problem with Gmail should be resolved for the vast majority of affected users,” said Google's parent company, Alphabet, at 7:52 a.m.. “We will continue to work towards restoring service for the remaining affected users.”

Downdetector, which tracks website outages, reported the problem affected users across the world, but appeared especially widespread in the northeastern U.S., Britain and other parts of Europe. Japan, Malaysia and India also looked to be more affected.

Wintery weather expected Monday into Tuesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska reported its smallest number of new virus cases since early November on Saturday as the state prepares for the first doses of a coronavirus vaccine to arrive.

The state said 811 new virus cases were reported Saturday to give the state a total of 147,688 cases since the pandemic began. That marked the first time since Nov. 2 that the daily tally of new cases was below 1,000.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 1,772.14 new cases per day on Nov. 28 to 1,507.43 new cases per day on Saturday.

Nebraska said 711 people were hospitalized with the virus on Saturday, which was down from 759 the day before. That figure remains well below the record of 987 set on Nov. 20.

There have also been 1,365 deaths in the state linked to the virus.

Also Saturday, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said 11 more prison staffers had tested positive for the virus. Ten of those ill staffers work at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution and one works at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

A total of 402 Corrections Department employees have now been diagnosed with COVID-19. Of those, 286 have recovered.

Local residents looking for the perfect holiday gift now have a unique option. This week, the North Platte Community Build Playground Fundraising Committee began their fundraising efforts with fence picket sponsorships.

The customizable, tax-deductible pickets, available for a minimum $50 per picket donation, will build the fence that will line the future playground at Centennial Park, located at the intersection of Oak St. and Francis St. The playground is tentatively scheduled to be built by community volunteers September 2021.

The playground committee has partnered with Playgrounds by Leathers, a national company that has worked with communities to build a total of approximately 3,350 playgrounds across the country designed to maximize outdoor play and children’s imaginations.

The group, led by co-chairs Emily Wurl and Tauni Morris, started the project in October, working with the children of Kids Klub, North Platte. As part of the process, local children were asked to design the playground of their dreams. The Playgrounds by Leathers playground designers incorporated the children’s drawings and historical aspects of the North Platte community to create a one-of-a-kind imaginative outdoor space.

The future children’s play area will offer an ADA-inclusive playground to North Platte and will feature 40 components, including a replica of the North Platte “Canteen” Depot, a 1940s vintage car, a rock wall, a wobbly bridge, and train with a caboose.

“Eight hundred pickets are available, with each being used to build the fence that goes around the playground,” said JoAnna Markiewicz, playground volunteer and picket donation lead. “The minimum $50 donation pickets will include engraved names of those that the pickets are gifted to. The picket sponsorships will make excellent gifts for parents and grandparents searching for great gift ideas,” said Markiewicz.

In addition to picket donations, the fundraising committee will look to component sponsorships, grants, memorial brick sales, events and private donations to raise the $334,000 needed to bring the playground to life.

Fence pickets lead the way for North Platte Community Build Playground fundraising

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Mohamed Ibrahim ran for two touchdowns following Nebraska turnovers, and a Minnesota team missing nearly three dozen players to COVID-19 protocols or injuries left Memorial Stadium with a stunning 24-17 win on Saturday after being idle three weeks.

Ibrahim scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1 to give Minnesota a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter after Adrian Martinez fumbled at the Nebraska 39.

Connor Culp's 30-yard field goal cut it to 24-17 with 4:42 left. The Gophers then called on Ibrahim to finish off the game, having him carry six straight times for 59 yards before they went into victory formation at the Nebraska 6.

"Through the stuff we've had to go through, we've become closer and our bond has grown," quarterback Tanner Morgan said. "Guys want to do things for each other at an even higher level than before. It's a lot of fun being around the guys. Having fun was something we talked a lot about this week. Having fun playing the game, having fun with each other. Our guys definitely did that."

The Gophers (3-3, 3-3 Big Ten) had their last two games canceled because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the team, and most of their missing 33 players were in the conference's 21-day return to play protocol.

It also was Minnesota's first game without star wide receiver Rashod Bateman, who opted out Nov. 25, and the Gophers were down to four defensive linemen, two tight ends and they also were depleted on the offensive line.

Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck gave part of the credit for the win to the team's medical staff, which helped manage the fallout from the virus.

"I do believe unless you're in a college football or college basketball locker room right now, I don't think anybody has any idea how hard this is," Fleck said. "Constantly changing roster, roster management, injuries on top of it, opt-outs, players testing positive for COVID two days before a game.

"We don't have enough players to put a scout team out there (at practice). We had 22 days off. There's a mental, physical and emotional toll this year has taken on athletes."

Nebraska (2-5, 2-5), which beat Purdue on the road last week, hasn't won back-to-back Big Ten games since 2018.

"I'm hurting for the kids," Huskers coach Scott Frost said. "I love the team. I thought the energy and preparation were really good. We just didn't play very well."

Ibrahim finished with 108 yards on 20 carries and Tanner Morgan was 17 of 30 for 181 yards.

The Gophers, who came to Lincoln as 10-point underdogs, took a 17-14 lead into the final quarter. They had gone ahead late in the first half after a targeting penalty on cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt kept alive a 75-yard scoring drive that started with Cam Wiley sprinting 61 yards down the sideline.

Taylor-Britt went helmet-to-helmet with Morgan while stopping him short on a third-down run. That set up Minnesota inside the 10, and Morgan threw to tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford in the back of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.

The Gophers opened the scoring after Tyler Nubin intercepted a tipped pass at the Huskers' 35 in the middle of the first quarter. On fourth-and-1, Seth Green replaced Morgan and lined up in wildcat formation. He stepped to the side as a direct snap went to Ibrahim, who broke through the middle for a 26-yard touchdown.

Luke McCaffrey threw the interception two plays after replacing starter Adrian Martinez, who appeared to get his left (non-throwing) hand dinged. Martinez returned for the next series.

Nebraska managed only 1.9 yards per play on its first three possessions against the statistically worst defense in the Big Ten.

"We just wanted our players to play with incredible effort and for each other, and I thought they did that," Fleck said. "They gave us everything they had."

Minnesota: This ranks as one of the guttiest wins in recent memory for a team ravaged by the virus. Ibrahim has been the bell cow for the Gophers, but they discovered young running back talent in Wiley and at receiver in Daniel Jackson to fill the void created by Bateman.

Nebraska: Whatever can go wrong for the Huskers does. The two turnovers were costly, and the defense lost Taylor-Britt to a targeting call for the second time this season and playmaking linebacker Luke Reimer to injury in the first quarter.

Gophers, missing 33 players, stun Huskers 24-17 after layoff

The Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/crime-and-courts/nebraska-inmate-who-said-he-was-forced-to-join-in-escape-loses-appeal/article_585ce172-3bc4-11eb-b217-0710149e332b.html" target="_blank">reports&nbsp;</a>that the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday against Timothy Clausen. The court said that if Clausen wanted to assert that he was forced to join in the escape with fellow inmate Armon Dixon, he should have turned himself in as soon as the two separated.

The court also rejected Clausen's argument that he was denied a fair trial when Dixon and another inmate were barred from testifying in his defense and Clausen's own testimony was stricken.

Dixon, while willing to describe how he and Clausen managed to escape, told the trial judge that he wouldn't testify about who provided him drugs and a cellphone that were used in the escape unless he was given immunity.

The trial judge ruled that the information was closely associated with the crime and that to not allow prosecutors to question Dixon about that would be unfair. Jacobsen also ruled out testimony from the cellmate, saying it was based on hearsay.

Clausen's testimony was also stricken after he shouted to jurors about the disqualification of his two witnesses.

KEARNEY – Kyle Harshbarger and Jim Davis recognize the value of continuing education for law enforcement officers.

Harshbarger received countless hours of advanced training during his 24-year career with Kearney Police Department, allowing him to serve as a SWAT team commander and head of criminal investigations before joining the University of Nebraska at Kearney faculty in 2018.

Davis, UNK’s police chief since June 2015, has 37 years of law enforcement experience, including time with three different sheriff’s departments and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department, where he was a training officer and criminal investigator. He works with both the Nebraska and South Dakota law enforcement training centers to instruct new recruits in areas such as search and seizure, suspect control, traffic stops, tactical communications, investigations and interrogation.

“We were both very fortunate that the agencies we worked for trained us very well,” said Harshbarger, a full-time lecturer in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/cj/index.php">UNK’s Department of Criminal Justice</a>.

But, he added, “The smaller agencies don’t always get those opportunities.”

Harshbarger and Davis believe every law enforcement officer should have access to the training and education needed to effectively serve their communities, and they’re using their roles at UNK to help make this happen.

The duo launched an initiative earlier this year that offers continuing education at little to no cost for any Nebraska law enforcement agency. Their focus is on smaller departments, especially those in rural parts of the state, that lack the resources or funding to provide this training.

“We want to give them the training they need while also promoting everything the university has to offer,” Davis said. “Our payback is when they decide to sign up for other classes or they send their child here to the university.”

So far, the training program has reached about 40 different agencies across the state, with sessions offered on campus or at a remote site. Agencies can also participate via Zoom.

“Geographically, we look at this as an opportunity for agencies that are located outside larger metropolitan areas,” Harshbarger said.

Nebraska law enforcement officers are required to complete at least 20 hours of continuing education each year to maintain certification. This includes two hours of anti-bias and implicit bias training, a requirement the Nebraska Legislature added in July to combat apparent or actual racial profiling.

That training has been a major focus of the UNK program.

“If you have a brain, you have some type of bias,” said Davis, who works with officers to identify these biases and prevent them from impacting their on-the-job actions.

Last week, the UNK Police chief made the nearly 200-mile drive to Center – a tiny town in northeast Nebraska – to lead a free training session on the topic. More than a dozen law enforcement officers from four different agencies were in attendance.

“For smaller departments like mine, that are that far away from Grand Island, being able to get somebody like Jim to come up here and train us is really fantastic,” said Knox County Sheriff Don Henery, who organized the session conducted in the courthouse basement.

Henery oversees eight sworn officers and a tight budget. By avoiding a six-hour round trip to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, he saves both time and money.

“While those officers are gone, you have to pay somebody to work. You have to pay them on the road. You can see the costs climb,” said Henery, who gave Davis an “A++” on his presentation.

“He did a whale of a job,” the sheriff said. “I really appreciate it.”

In addition to anti-bias training, Harshbarger and Davis also offer classes in numerous other areas, including criminal investigation, search and seizure, mental health, de-escalation and report writing. Training sessions are tailored to meet agencies’ wants and needs. As the program evolves, they hope to bring in outside experts who can lead sessions on specific topics.

They also plan to expand the initiative into neighboring states, such as Colorado, Kansas, South Dakota and Wyoming, and there’s an opportunity to provide training at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/collegepark/index.php">College Park at Grand Island</a>, potentially through a partnership with the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. UNK reestablished its presence at College Park in September and the university will begin its first slate of courses there, including two upper-level criminal justice classes, on Jan. 25.

Eventually, Harshbarger and Davis want to create a set schedule for training dates and locations, allowing agencies to sign up for the sessions they’re interested in.

“This is our way of giving back to the law enforcement community,” Harshbarger said. “I think it’s important that we do that as a university, that we give back to those who got us to where we’re at.”

Governor Pete Ricketts announced that the State is moving from the “orange” to “yellow” phase of its coronavirus pandemic response plan.&nbsp; As a result, the State of Nebraska is issuing new Directed Health Measures (DHMs) effective 12:01 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2020.&nbsp; The new DHMs change some of the restrictions put in place to help manage the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, protecting Nebraska’s hospitals has been the ‘north star’ guiding our strategic response to the coronavirus,” said Gov. Ricketts.&nbsp; “Coronavirus hospitalizations have decreased from where they were three weeks ago.&nbsp; As a result, we’re updating the State’s DHMs in keeping with our pandemic plan. &nbsp;The virus is still present in our communities, and we all need to continue using the tools we have to slow its spread.&nbsp; I especially urge Nebraskans to be mindful of at-risk loved ones when making plans to celebrate the holidays. &nbsp;Let’s all take personal responsibility to stay healthy and keep Nebraska headed in the right direction.” &nbsp;

Gov. Ricketts announces new directed health measures effective Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska will relax its coronavirus restrictions Saturday after a recent decline in hospitalized patients, but state officials stressed that residents should still avoid crowded areas and confined spaces to keep the virus from spreading.

Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday that the state will revert to fewer restrictions because the number of coronavirus patients in hospital beds has fallen below a seven-day average of 20% of those available by the end of Friday.

(AP) - Nebraska will relax its coronavirus restrictions Saturday after a recent decline in hospitalized patients, but state officials stressed that residents should still avoid crowded areas and confined spaces to keep the virus from spreading.Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday that the state will revert to fewer restrictions because the number of coronavirus patients in hospital beds has fallen below a seven-day average of 20% of those available by the end of Friday.Hospitals will now be allowed to resume elective surgeries as long as they keep a minimum number of beds available.Restrictions on indoor crowd sizes will ease as well, although state guidelines continue to advise social distancing. Masks in places such as salons and barbershops will no longer be required but they are recommended, and many of the state's largest cities still have local mandates in place.Ricketts urged people to continue to avoid large gatherings and wear masks, although he hasn't imposed a statewide mandate."We still have the virus in the community, we need to continue to practice all the rules we've been talking about with regard to the pandemic," he said at a news conference.The number of coronavirus patients in Nebraska's hospitals appears to have stabilized for now even though the numbers are still elevated.State officials said 779 people were hospitalized with the virus as of Thursday evening, a number that has remained relatively unchanged over the last several days. The state reached a single-day high of 987 hospitalizations last month, raising the prospect of tougher social-distancing restrictions.Nebraska's chief medical officer, Dr. Gary Anthone, said officials can see "a light at the end of the tunnel" with the pandemic but warned that the state is still in a precarious position."We've held down the fort now for almost nine months, and now we can see the cavalry coming" with expected vaccine shipments, he said. "Now is not the time to quit fighting."Mel McNea, the CEO of Great Plains Health in North Platte, said his hospital will continue to monitor bed space closely even if the state restrictions are relaxed. McNea said the hospital is still treating more urgent ailments, such as heart attacks and strokes.Nebraska confirmed 1,850 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, a number that has been trending downward since the latest peak in the middle of November. The state reported 145,774 known cases and 1,329 deaths since the pandemic began.The elevated numbers have raised concerns that hospitals could become overwhelmed with patients and lead to even more deaths. Most of the people who have died from the virus in Nebraska are elderly.Nebraska still has 28% of its hospital beds, 26% of its intensive care unit beds and 70% of its ventilators available for virus patients.
