 <li>Getting kids back into the classroom is critical to their well-being.&nbsp; CDC Director Robert Redfield recently reported that his agency is seeing more suicides and drug overdose deaths, among the high school population, than fatalities from coronavirus.&nbsp;</li><li>Dr. Redfield has also highlighted the extremely low risk of the virus to school-age children.&nbsp; In fact, the CDC says that coronavirus is five to ten times less deadly than the flu for school-age kids.</li>

Since the early days of our state when pioneering women and men plowed the prairies and cut grain by hand, Nebraska has been known for its industriousness.&nbsp; Our love of growing things and making things has helped our state power through even the most difficult times.&nbsp; Just last year, we experienced historic flooding and now a pandemic.

As coronavirus restrictions have eased, Nebraskans are getting back to work. &nbsp;Recent data has shown that, so far, Nebraska’s economy has been one of the least impacted in the nation by the coronavirus.&nbsp; We also have one of the lowest unemployment rates.&nbsp; Even so, we have experienced historic joblessness and unemployment rates. &nbsp;To help Nebraskans find a new job or career opportunity, we have deployed three programs.&nbsp; The State’s reemployment program, SNAP Next Step, and Workforce Retraining Initiative (WRI) are all helping Nebraskans find a new opportunity.

A few years ago, Nebraska became the first state in the nation to launch a reemployment program.&nbsp; Led by the Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL), this free program connects Nebraskans searching for a new opportunity with job coaches, tools to create an online searchable resume, and other valuable resources.&nbsp; People receiving unemployment benefits participate in these services to help them get back to work more quickly.&nbsp; Since mid-March, teammates at NDOL have assisted with more than 75,000 requests for employment services. &nbsp;You don’t have to receive unemployment benefits to access these great resources.&nbsp; NDOL’s job centers are open to anyone.&nbsp; They stand ready to connect Nebraskans to tens of thousands of employment openings.&nbsp; For more information about services available through the job centers, visit&nbsp;<a href="https://dol.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">dol.nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://neworks.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">NEworks.nebraska.gov</a>.

One great way our reemployment program at NDOL has been making a difference in people’s lives is through a partnership with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.&nbsp; For the past few years, these agencies have teamed up to help families who rely on food stamps find new opportunities that give them greater financial independence and flexibility.&nbsp; This initiative, called SNAP Next Step, provides families with employment services such as creating a virtual resume, preparing for a job interview, and helping participants enhance their skills. &nbsp;On average, participants who complete SNAP Next Step increase their income by about $1,200 a month or $14,500 per year!&nbsp; For example, Jenni was out of work when she enrolled in the program.&nbsp; SNAP Next Step helped her find full-time employment at an engineering firm.&nbsp; Her new monthly income is $2,284, eliminating her need for SNAP benefits. &nbsp;

In addition to improving their financial situation, SNAP Next Step participants are enhancing their quality of life. &nbsp;Many are now working more predictable hours, allowing them to spend more time together as a family.&nbsp; For example, a single parent was working the second shift, including weekends, before she started SNAP Next Step.&nbsp; Now, she has a job working 8:00am to 5:00pm and can spend evenings with her children.&nbsp; In another instance, a single mother working as a waitress made just over $900 a month with no health benefits.&nbsp; After taking part in SNAP Next Step, she now earns almost $2,700 a month with full benefits, a pension, and potential bonuses.&nbsp;

Most WRI scholarships cover the full cost of the training program. &nbsp;Participants who were receiving unemployment benefits before being awarded a scholarship may continue to access the benefits, provided they are receiving training in a program approved by NDOL.&nbsp; Participating in approved training fulfills the work search requirement for people receiving unemployment benefits.&nbsp;

COLUMN Ricketts: Getting Back to Work

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A former North Platte city councilman and mayoral candidate has been arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of liquor.

According to North Platte Police, on July 31, at 7:12 PM, a citizen reported a black pickup with red lettering on its sides for poor driving behavior in the area of Buffalo Bill Avenue and Rodeo Road.&nbsp; 

Police say an officer observed a pickup matching that description traveling eastbound in the 1100 block of Rodeo Road. 

According to police, as the officer passed the pickup they recognized the driver as Larry Britton.  The officer was aware that Britton had a warrant for his arrest and suspended driver's license. 

Police say a traffic stop was conducted and Britton displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol. 

Police say Britton failed a preliminary breath test and submitted to a blood test to which the results are not yet available. 

 Britton was incarcerated on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol 4th offense, over .15 and driving under suspension. He was also arrested for the active warrant.

Britton served on the North Platte city council and was on the primary ticket for mayor in 2020.

Former North Platte councilman, mayoral candidate accused of felony DUI

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Health officials reported a new positive case of COVID-19 in Lincoln County on Monday.

The West Central District Health Department (WCDHD) says the case is a female in her 30s actively isolating at home. The contact type of this case is under investigation.

Officials say there have been 100 cases in the WCDHD jurisdiction since March. There are currently 28 active cases. 70 cases are reported as recovered with two deaths.

LINCOLN, Neb. – With fall hunting seasons coming up, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters of temporary Hunter Education changes from which they can benefit.

Until further notice, online-only Hunter Education courses, without the Hunt Safe Session requirement, is allowed for ages 11 and older in Nebraska.

Youth ages 11-15 who take the online Hunter Education course normally are required to attend a two-hour Hunt Safe Session before they can receive a certificate of completion. That Hunt Safe Session requirement temporarily has been waived since Game and Parks has limited the size and available number of classes in the interest of public health due to COVID-19. Those 11- to 15-year-olds who complete the online course will be certified, though they are encouraged to take an available Hunt Safe Session in the future.

The Hunt Safe Session is a two-hour review focusing on equipment safety for firearms and archery, tree-stand safety and shoot/don’t shoot scenarios.

The reduction in class sizes, including Hunt Safe Sessions and Hunter Education classroom courses, are a proactive effort to prevent the potential for spread of COVID-19.

Over 100 travelers complete 2020 Nebraska Passport in first two months

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said Monday that he remains confident that the benefits of reopening schools this fall outweigh the risks posed by the coronavirus and that he thinks students can return to the classroom safely.

Ricketts said it's important to reopen schools because of the academic, social, behavioral and nutritional benefits of having kids in class.

"It's important from an academic standpoint, but it's not just about academics either," Ricketts said. "There's a wide variety of things that go into the overall health of a child when it comes to why it's important that they're back in classrooms."

Ricketts and Education Commissioner Matt Blomstedt said schools across the state have drafted detailed plans to keep children safe while reopening after consulting with local health officials and the state. Many districts are also offering parents an online-only option for their children to learn. Some districts are planning a hybrid approach in which kids alternate between online and in-person instruction.

"It's hard to balance between the safe environment when dealing with a pandemic while also understanding the impacts of not having school operating. Balancing those things is absolutely critical," Blomstedt said.

Having multiple options available for families is part of what will help schools successfully reopen this fall, and Blomstedt said parents will likely become more comfortable with schools being open as time passes.

"I understand the fears and trepidations that folks may have as we walk forward," he said. "But as we do this together, we'll get a comfort level. We'll get a comfort level of how that's going to work in schools. We'll understand when cases may pop up in schools that we're going to address those."

Some schools have already seen virus cases among students participating in practices and rehearsals for sports and activities before the school year begins. And schools in other states&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e09fb2d56547704c48eb05b21483066d" target="_blank">have had students and staffers</a>&nbsp;test positive for COVID-19 within a day or two of reopening.

Blomstedt said conducting detailed contact tracing when students become ill will help schools manage the risks and determine how many other students might have to quarantine themselves following a positive case.

Nebraska's coronavirus case numbers have slowly trended upward this summer after the state eased restrictions and more businesses reopened. The seven-day rolling average of new daily cases in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks, from 212 new cases per day on the seven-day period that ended July 19 to 285 new cases per day during the period that ended Aug. 2.

Since the virus outbreak began, Nebraska has had 26,702 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 332 deaths linked to the virus, according to the state's online tracking portal. There were 491 additional cases reported since Friday.

Even though the number of cases continues to rise in the state, officials said hospitals have the space available to help people who contract the virus. Nebraska had 40% of its hospital beds and 83% of its ventilators available as of Monday, according to the tracking portal.

Sutherland Community Breakfast set for August 9

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The economy continues to recover in nine Midwest and Plains states, but businesses are still cutting jobs amid the ongoing impact of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a monthly survey of business leaders released Monday.

The overall index for the region improved to 57.4 in July from June's 50.3. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below 50 suggests decline.

"While the June and July's readings were much higher than I expected, they provide no grounds for celebration," Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said.

The region's overall index will have to remain above 50 for many months before the economy reaches the point it was at before states began imposing restrictions because of the coronavirus, Goss said.

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Job losses have slowed in the region, but they continue to be reported. The employment index improved to 48.5 in July from June's 38.9, but it remained in negative territory.

But business leaders are optimistic about the next six months. The survey's confidence index increased to a strong 68.3 in July from June's 65.3.

The Creighton Economic Forecasting Group uses the same methodology as the national survey to consult supply managers and business leaders. Creighton University economics professor Ernie Goss oversees the report.

The overall index ranges between 0 and 100. Growth neutral is 50, and a figure greater than 50 indicates growth in that factor over the next three to six months. A figure below 50 indicates decline.

Here are the state-by-state results for July:

Arkansas: The overall index for Arkansas rose to 61 from June's 50.9. Components of the index were: new orders at 68.7, production or sales at 67.6, delivery lead time at 66, inventories at 46.7, and employment at 56.0. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arkansas has lost 63,000 jobs, or approximately 5% of its total employment since the coronavirus outbreak began and 16,000, or approximately 10%, of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to only slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.

Iowa: Iowa's overall index climbed above growth neutral in July to register 50.9 from June's 47.1. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 66.4, production. or sales at 57.9, delivery lead time at 64.4, employment at 29, and inventories at 37. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Iowa has lost 108,000 jobs, or approximately 6.8% of its total employment since the virus outbreak began and 5,400, or approximately 2.4% of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to continued job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.

Kansas: The state's overall index for July increased to 59.2 from June's 45.1. Components of the index were: new orders at 68, production or sales at 64.8, delivery lead time at 53.1, employment at 48.3, and inventories at 61.7. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kansas has lost 78,000 jobs, or approximately 5.5% of its total employment since the start of the coronavirus outbreak and 10,400, or approximately 6.2% of its manufacturing employment. "Our recent surveys point to only slight job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.

Minnesota: The overall index for Minnesota climbed to 54.7 in July from 45.0 in June. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 65.0, production or sales at 52.3, delivery lead time at 64.5, inventories at 42.3, and employment at 49.2. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Minnesota has lost 249,000 jobs, or approximately 8.4% of its total employment, since the virus outbreak began and 21,600, or approximately 6.7% of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to only slight job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.

Missouri: The overall index for Missouri sank to 44.7 in July from June's 50.5. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 66.6, production or sales at 58.9, delivery lead time at 25.4, inventories at 40.6, and employment at 31.8. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Missouri has lost 189,000 jobs, or approximately 6.6% of its total employment, since the coronavirus outbreak started and 16,000, or approximately 5.9% of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to continued job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.

Nebraska: The state's overall index for July rose to 68.6 from 52.6 in June. Components of the index were: new orders at 68.6, production or sales at 67.2, delivery lead time at 62.1, inventories at 70.1, and employment at 55. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nebraska has lost 56,000 jobs, or approximately 5.4% of its total employment, since the coronavirus outbreak began and 2,900, or approximately 2.9%, of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to only slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.

North Dakota: The overall index for North Dakota declined to 45.5 in July from 51.6 in June. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 66.7, production or sales at 59.3, delivery lead time at 27, employment at 32.8, and inventories at 41.8. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, North Dakota has lost 37,000 jobs, or approximately 8.5% of its total employment since the virus outbreak started and 1,300, or approximately 5% of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to continued job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.

Oklahoma: The state's overall index improved to 69 in July from June's 53.1. Components of the overall July index were: new orders at 69, production or sales at 69.2, delivery lead time at 73.6, inventories at 77.2, and employment at 60.6. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Oklahoma has lost 83,000 jobs, or approximately 4.9% of its total employment since the coronavirus outbreak began and 9,200, or approximately 6.7% of its manufacturing employment. "Our recent surveys point to slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.

South Dakota: The overall index for South Dakota increased to 61 in July from June's 52.4. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 68.2, production or sales at 65.6, delivery lead time at 56.5, inventories at 64.2, and employment at 50.3. (AP) - The economy continues to recover in nine Midwest and Plains states, but businesses are still cutting jobs amid the ongoing impact of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a monthly survey of business leaders released Monday.The overall index for the region improved to 57.4 in July from June's 50.3. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below 50 suggests decline."While the June and July's readings were much higher than I expected, they provide no grounds for celebration," Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said.The region's overall index will have to remain above 50 for many months before the economy reaches the point it was at before states began imposing restrictions because of the coronavirus, Goss said.The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.Job losses have slowed in the region, but they continue to be reported. The employment index improved to 48.5 in July from June's 38.9, but it remained in negative territory.But business leaders are optimistic about the next six months. The survey's confidence index increased to a strong 68.3 in July from June's 65.3.The Creighton Economic Forecasting Group uses the same methodology as the national survey to consult supply managers and business leaders. Creighton University economics professor Ernie Goss oversees the report.The overall index ranges between 0 and 100. Growth neutral is 50, and a figure greater than 50 indicates growth in that factor over the next three to six months. A figure below 50 indicates decline.Here are the state-by-state results for July:Arkansas: The overall index for Arkansas rose to 61 from June's 50.9. Components of the index were: new orders at 68.7, production or sales at 67.6, delivery lead time at 66, inventories at 46.7, and employment at 56.0. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arkansas has lost 63,000 jobs, or approximately 5% of its total employment since the coronavirus outbreak began and 16,000, or approximately 10%, of its manufacturing employment. Components of the index were: new orders at 68, production or sales at 64.8, delivery lead time at 53.1, employment at 48.3, and inventories at 61.7. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kansas has lost 78,000 jobs, or approximately 5.5% of its total employment since the start of the coronavirus outbreak and 10,400, or approximately 6.2% of its manufacturing employment. "Our recent surveys point to only slight job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.Minnesota: The overall index for Minnesota climbed to 54.7 in July from 45.0 in June. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 65.0, production or sales at 52.3, delivery lead time at 64.5, inventories at 42.3, and employment at 49.2. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Minnesota has lost 249,000 jobs, or approximately 8.4% of its total employment, since the virus outbreak began and 21,600, or approximately 6.7% of its manufacturing employment. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Missouri has lost 189,000 jobs, or approximately 6.6% of its total employment, since the coronavirus outbreak started and 16,000, or approximately 5.9% of its manufacturing employment. Components of the index were: new orders at 68.6, production or sales at 67.2, delivery lead time at 62.1, inventories at 70.1, and employment at 55. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nebraska has lost 56,000 jobs, or approximately 5.4% of its total employment, since the coronavirus outbreak began and 2,900, or approximately 2.9%, of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to only slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.North Dakota: The overall index for North Dakota declined to 45.5 in July from 51.6 in June. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 66.7, production or sales at 59.3, delivery lead time at 27, employment at 32.8, and inventories at 41.8. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, North Dakota has lost 37,000 jobs, or approximately 8.5% of its total employment since the virus outbreak started and 1,300, or approximately 5% of its manufacturing employment. "Our surveys point to continued job losses in the months ahead," Goss said.Oklahoma: The state's overall index improved to 69 in July from June's 53.1. Components of the overall July index were: new orders at 69, production or sales at 69.2, delivery lead time at 73.6, inventories at 77.2, and employment at 60.6. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Oklahoma has lost 83,000 jobs, or approximately 4.9% of its total employment since the coronavirus outbreak began and 9,200, or approximately 6.7% of its manufacturing employment. "Our recent surveys point to slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.South Dakota: The overall index for South Dakota increased to 61 in July from June's 52.4. Components of the overall index were: new orders at 68.2, production or sales at 65.6, delivery lead time at 56.5, inventories at 64.2, and employment at 50.3. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, South Dakota has lost 24,500 jobs, or approximately 5.6% of its total employment since the virus outbreak started and 1,300 or approximately 3% of its manufacturing employment. "Our recent surveys point to only slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.

Business leaders say economy still improving after reopening

KEARNEY, Neb. (NSP)-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two men following a pursuit on I-80 and search of cornfields Saturday evening.

At approximately 6:20 p.m. Saturday, a trooper observed a Jeep Liberty speeding as is traveled westbound on Interstate 80 near Grand Island. As the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle refused to stop and fled westbound. The Jeep then exited at mile marker 305, failed to stop at the stop sign, lost control, and crashed into a pole on the westbound on-ramp. The vehicle then continued to flee and re-entered I-80 westbound. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The Jeep continued driving in a reckless manner, with speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. As troopers continued the pursuit, officers with the Kearney Police Department were able to successfully deploy stop sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop near mile marker 275.

Both occupants then fled on foot into a cornfield. The NSP Aviation Support Division and Police Service Dog Division were called-in to assist in the search, as well as the Kearney Police Department and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office. After approximately three hours, both subjects were located separately, attempting to hide in the nearby fields. They were taken into custody without incident. Both were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney for treatment of minor injuries suffered while attempting to hide.

The driver, Christopher Cornell, 26, of Brighton, Colorado, and passenger, Deoviyon Overstreet, 21, of Aurora, Colorado were arrested for possession of marijuana – between one ounce and one pound, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, violation of a protection order, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, failure to obey a lawful order, and obstructing a peace officer.

Cornell was also arrested for several charges related to the pursuit, including felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving during revocation, leaving the scene of an accident, and numerous traffic violations. Both men were lodged in Buffalo County Jail.

1 new case of COVID-19 reported in Lincoln County on Saturday

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Seven people, including an Alaska state lawmaker, died Friday when two small airplanes collided in midair near the airport in Soldotna, a small community on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula.

Alaska State Troopers said state Rep. Gary Knopp, 67, of Kenai was the sole occupant of one plane. The other plane was flown by a local pilot, and carried a guide from Kansas and four people from South Carolina.

“This is an unfathomable tragedy for multiple families today,” Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner Amanda Price said. “Troopers and partner agencies have worked together diligently at the scene and have reached out to next of kin to notify them of this heartbreaking incident.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the fatal accident, which occurred just before 8:30 a.m.

Rita Geller, who works at a golf course near the airport, said she started running when she heard the planes hit, and watched one fall to the ground,

“I ran to more of a clearing and basically saw it explode,” she told the Anchorage Daily News. “The engine, things were flying off of it. I didn’t see the second plane, but I saw a lot of debris flying around. It was horrific. It was just like 9/11.”

Troopers say six of the seven people were pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. The seventh person died while being transported to a hospital.

Besides Knopp, troopers identified the other six people killed as pilot Gregory Bell, 57, of Soldotna; <a href="https://www.gobeyondthebend.com/?fbclid=IwAR147u_srG7VtR1WuCONERGJ6eKZTaGndLSKFEdV2Qxc1AAt0Z6rtfiVYv8">guide David Rogers, 40, </a>of Kansas; and Caleb Hulsey, 26; Heather Hulsey, 25; Mackay Hulsey, 24, and Kirstin Wright, 23, all of South Carolina.

Bell was one of the owners of High Adventure Air Charter in Soldotna, which offers bear viewing adventures, fishing and hunting trips and glacier tours, according to its website.

A person who answered the at the charter business Friday afternoon said the company had no comment.

“We live in a small, tight community here in the Central Peninsula. When I heard the horrific sounds of a plane crash this morning, which occurred very close to my home, I knew there was a high probability it involved someone we knew well,” state Sen. Peter Micciche said in a statement.

“I have known Gary Knopp and Greg Bell for most of my life. Gary has served the Kenai Peninsula community for decades. I have flown with Greg and never felt to be in better, more safety-focused hands while in the air. We are reeling from the loss to our community,” he said.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half-staff and to remain in that position of honor for Knopp until sunset Monday.

“The first lady and I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to Rep. Knopp’s family as they mourn his untimely passing,” Dunleavy said in a statement. “Throughout his 42 years on the Kenai Peninsula, Gary became well known as an avid outdoorsman, a skilled pilot, and a dedicated public servant. His presence will no doubt be missed by those he faithfully served.”

House Speaker Bryce Edgmon of Dillingham said he was shocked and devastated upon hearing of Knopp’s death. “Gary was a one-of-a-kind leader and a true Alaskan who worked tirelessly for his district in the Legislature. He will be missed by many.”

Senate President Cathy Giessel, a Republican from Anchorage, called it “a heart-breaking tragedy. More than a legislator, Gary Knopp was a husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and friend. He will be tremendously missed.”

The Federal Aviation Administration initially said the two planes involved were a single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and a twin-engine Piper Aztec, However, the FAA later said it did not believe the second plane was a Piper Aztec, but it had not yet confirmed the make and model of the airplane involved.

The NTSB later tweeted the second plane was a Piper PA-12.

The two planes collided approximately 2 miles northeast of the Soldotna Airport, the FAA statement said after crash.

The FAA sent two investigators to the crash site, which is about 150 miles (241 kilometres) southwest of Anchorage.

Knopp, a Republican, left the House GOP caucus and served in a coalition of Democrats, independents and GOP lawmakers that comprised the House Majority. That left the remaining House Republicans in the minority.

Knopp faced two Republican challengers in the Aug. 18 primary. A message sent to the state Division of Elections to see if Knopp’s name would remain on the ballot was not immediately returned.

Knopp was first elected to the state House in 2016, and served for years before that on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly.

He was born in Whitefish, Montana, and moved to Alaska in 1979. He eventually settled in Kenai and worked as a general contractor.

His hobbies included flying , diving, hunting, golfing “and enjoying life in general at home on the Peninsula,” according to his legislative biography.

WCDHD reports possible exposure to coronavirus at North Platte bar, sand volleyball courts

LINCOLN, Neb.-The Administrative Services Major for the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP), Major Russell Stanczyk, will retire on July 31, 2020. Stanczyk has served the citizens of Nebraska with NSP for nearly 34 years.

“It has been a pleasure to serve the people of Nebraska throughout my career,” said Major Stanczyk. “As I depart the agency, it gives me pride to see the men and women of the State Patrol continuing that mission as troopers and in civilian capacities. NSP is a talented team and I’ve been honored to be a part of it.”

Major Stanczyk, 56, began his career with NSP in 1986, as part of Camp 32. Throughout his career, he has worked in many areas of NSP, including the Patrol Division, the Police Service Dog Division, SWAT, Internal Affairs, and Administrative Services. Stanczyk was promoted to the rank of Major in command of Field Services in 2008 before transitioning to Administrative Services Major in 2015. Stanczyk served as Acting Superintendent for several months in 2017.

“Major Stanczyk has been a stalwart leader for the Nebraska State Patrol for many years,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “His dedication to public safety has positively affected countless people throughout his career. That impact will be felt for years to come through the excellent example he set for our troopers who continue that work. We thank him for his service and congratulate him on his exemplary career.”

Stanczyk is a 2001 graduate of the 204th&nbsp;Session of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Virginia.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The damaged Willow View boat ramp at Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area is expected to be closed for the remainder of the year.

A concrete extension to the ramp sloughed away over time, creating a hazard for boat trailers.

In addition, the north lane of the Spring Creek Area boat ramp will close for the year starting July 31, as the end of the concrete ramp is getting close to the water line.

Two other boat ramps are available at Red Willow, located in Frontier County.
