OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Men from Missouri and Wisconsin are the latest to be sentenced in a federal probe of illegal hunting connected to a Broken Bow outfitting business.

Jacob Wideman, 32, of Pevely, Missouri, and Duane Mulvaine, 40, of Fox Lake, Wisconsin, were sentenced last week in Omaha's federal court, federal prosecutors for Nebraska said.

Wideman received a year of probation and was ordered to pay $10,000 in fines and restitution for shooting a trophy-sized mule deer with a firearm during archery season in October 2017, with the help of Hidden Hills Outfitters's owner. Prosecutors said Wideman then took the animal's skull, antlers and hide, but abandoned the carcass.

Mulvaine was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay $95,000 in fines and restitution for six violations carried out between 2012 and 2017, including hunting over bait, from a public roadway, at night or without a permit, and hunting with prohibited weapons.

To date, at least 30 defendants have pleaded guilty and been ordered to pay more than $353,000 in fines and restitution as part of the investigation into violations committed by owners, guides and clients of Hidden Hills.

In July, Hidden Hills and its owner, 30-year-old Jacob Hueftle, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act involving the illegal transport, purchase and sale of wildlife. Both are set to be sentenced in October.

KEARNEY, Neb.-The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a bomb threat was made at the Buffalo County courthouse in Kearney.

According to Captain Bob Anderson, t approximately 8:45 AM this morning Buffalo County authorities received a non-specific threat that there was a bomb at the Buffalo County courthouse.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The courthouse was evacuated and searched, according to Anderson.

Investigators say nothing unusual was located.&nbsp; 

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Kearney Police Department, Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, and Buffalo County Emergency Management.&nbsp; &nbsp;

UPDATE Missing/Endangered advisory issued for western Nebraska woman with dementia, diabetes 

A North Platte man was arrested over the weekend on child enticement allegations.

According to North Platte police, on August 29 at 8:42 p.m., officers responded to the 1300 Block of West 4th on the report of a disturbance.

Police say upon arrival, officers made contact with several subjects and learned that a disturbance occurred due to an issue involving a juvenile.  

Officers spoke with the mother of the juvenile victim who said they were at the residence for a birthday party.  The mother indicated that she was later approached by her young daughter, who asked if she could leave the home with 19-year old Robert Drapeau. 

 The mother told police she told her daughter no, as she did not know Drapeau that well and did not feel comfortable with the daughter leaving with him.  It was later determined that Drapeau heard this exchange as well. 

According to police, some time went by and the mother indicated that she could not locate her daughter anywhere at the residence and no one else knew where she was either.  Several people began searching the area, when police say Drapeau arrived back at the residence in his vehicle with the minor daughter located in the backseat of his car. 

Police say Drapeau was confronted at this time and a disturbance broke out, which prompted the call to law enforcement. 

 During the investigation, Officers determined that Drapeau had left the residence with the juvenile and went to run an errand.  Officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Drapeau. 

 Drapeau was later located in the 600 Block of South Carr and placed under arrest on suspicion of child enticement. 

Drapeau was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

this week of their recent Peak Performance Award. Peak is the highest
level of achievement possible by RMPEx which has only recognized 13
entities with as Peak recipients since 2003. In Nebraska, there are
only two organizations that have received Peak status, both are
hospitals. 



The
program is optional and quite rigorous. Businesses that choose to
apply to RMPEx are organizations that are aware of the importance of
performance excellence and those that are striving for top quality.
Applicants for the Peak Award must submit a more than 50-page
application that explains their organization perspectives on seven
criteria, which are: leadership; strategy; customers; measurement;
analysis and knowledge management; workforce; operations and results.
These criteria are identical to those used for the national-level
award, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Examiners made
their way to Great Plains Health in late October after spending 40
plus hours scrutinizing the application. RMPEx examiners spent
several days onsite interviewing key groups and individuals. In
addition, they conducted multiple walk-around interviews with staff
from a broad range of areas within the hospital.  



"Our
employees are our most valuable contributor to our performance
excellence,” said Mel McNea Great Plains Health chief executive
officer. “Receiving this award is validation of their commitment to
continuously improve patient outcomes and patient experiences. By
following the Baldrige performance review processes, we have learned
so much about our organization and have improved in all categories,”
said McNea, “We know we still have work to do, but the value is
already visible in all of the process improvements that have led to
safer and top quality patient care.”


“We
have so many measures of quality that we constantly work on to ensure
that we are providing the safest care to our patients,” said Barb
Petersen, Great Plains Health chief quality officer. The unique
aspect about the Baldrige framework is that it looks at the
organization as a whole, not just the clinical elements,” said
Petersen. “It looks at areas such as our customers, our vendors,

In

Great Plains Health receives Rocky Mountain Performance Excellence highest honor

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln has been placed under quarantine after 29 inmates tested positive for the coronavirus, officials said Sunday.

The positive cases were identified by tests that were done Friday. Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes said the positive cases included inmates in four different housing units, so the entire prison was placed under quarantine.

"We are acting out of an abundance of caution," Frakes said in a news release. "This move will allow us to continue testing the remainder of the population."

Officials said roughly 600 inmates were initially offered tests under the voluntary program, and 332 inmates agreed to be tested. The remaining inmates will be offered tests starting Sunday.

Frakes said most of the inmates who tested positive have not had any symptoms.

Warden Michele Wilhelm said the entire facility will be under quarantine for at least two weeks.

Frakes said prisoner visits will remain on hold across the agency while the penitentiary is in quarantine.

There have also been 64 corrections department employees who have tested positive since the virus outbreak began. Of those, 54 have recovered from the illness.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner filed a challenge on Friday to Secretary of State Bob Evnen's ruling that the medical marijuana ballot initiative qualified to be on the ballot.

Evnen said a day earlier that the Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana group had collected well over the 122,275 signatures it needed to put the issue on the ballot.

Opponents of the measure argue that it violates state rules requiring ballot measures to focus on a single question. Lincoln attorney Mark Fahleson, who is a former Nebraska Republican Party chairman, is representing Wagner. He said the measure poses two separate questions: whether residents should have the right to use marijuana for medical purposes, and whether private companies should be allowed to grow and sell it.

Organizers of the ballot measure have said they're highly confident that the measure will survive the legal challenge and they argue that medical marijuana has strong support in Nebraska.

Lawyers for the pro-medical marijuana group said in a letter that the legal challenge is "a last-minute attempt to derail the precious right of the people" to vote on voter-supported initiatives.

WCDHD reports two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lincoln County on Saturday

A longtime Noth Platte physician is hospitalized with COVID-19.

Dr. Leland Lamberty was diagnosed with COVID-19 and is currently at Great Plains Health in North Platte due to complications.

According to a Facebook post from First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dr. Lamberty is asking for prayers for his spouse and family and is also asking people to take the coronavirus seriously, calling it "real and dangerous."

Dr. Lamberty is in practice at Great Plains Family Medicine. He graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in 1971 and has practiced family medicine since.

WCDHD: 12 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Lincoln County on Friday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The number of positive COVID-19 cases among the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services employees has risen by two to 63.

KETV&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ketv.com/article/two-more-nebraska-corrections-employees-test-positive-for-covid-19/33839349" target="_blank">reports&nbsp;</a>that both of the newly infected employees are self-isolating at home. One of the employees works at the Lincoln Correctional Center. The second employee works at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

The department said that anyone who may have had close contact with either staff member will be directed to self-quarantine until they are cleared by a medical provider.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved the authorization of one lottery and one auction permit for the 2021 bighorn sheep season when it met Aug. 28 at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park.

The Commission also approved recommendations to:

• increase various 2021 nonresident fees, including for small game (hunt), fish, deer, antelope and turkey permits, antelope applications and the Aquatic Invasive Species Stamp for nonresident boats;

• amend wildlife regulations to allow the agency director, in the interest of public health, to determine that physical check stations are not prudent during the November firearm deer season, October antelope or muzzleloader season or any elk season, and allow the animal to be checked via internet or telephone;

• amend wildlife regulations regarding threatened and endangered species to add the thick-billed longspur (formerly McCown’s longspur) and the timber rattlesnake to the threatened list and remove the river otter from the threatened list; and

• change sport fishing regulations to add the following areas to the list of those where no live baitfish may be used or possessed: Rock Creek Lake State Recreation Area, Dundy County; Avocet Wildlife Management Area, Grant County; Wilbur Reservoir, Saline County; Big Elk, Sarpy County; and West Papillion 6, Sarpy County.

• approved the City of Chadron Deer Management Plan, a joint program with Game and Parks, to control the deer population with the use of Damage Control Permits;

• approved the permitting of some 2020 hunting in Niobrara, Eugene T. Mahoney, Ponca, Indian Cave, Chadron, and Platte River state parks, and Ash Hollow, Rock Creek Station and Fort Atkinson state historical parks; and

• approved budget requests for fiscal years 2022 and 2023.

It was announced that Free Fishing and Park Entry Day will be Saturday, Sept. 12. This family-friendly day allows anyone to explore outdoor opportunities at any Nebraska state park, state recreation area or state historical park without the need to purchase a park entry permit for the day, and it also allows anyone to fish for the day without a fish permit.

The Commission also heard a presentation from the Nebraska Chapter of the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, a membership organization working to protect public lands and waters through stewardship and education. The group shared its goals of working with partners to support access to public lands, hunting mentorship and passing on Nebraska's hunting and fishing legacies.

Also, Director Jim Douglas expressed his gratitude to the Nebraska Big Game Society for its recent $39,000 donation to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission following its spring online auction of a resident/nonresident elk tag auction. Commission approves 2021 bighorn sheep season

ALLIANCE, Neb. – Visitors to public lands and other recreational sites in the Nebraska Panhandle are being advised of wildfires in the region, and are being asked to be especially cautious because of the heightened risk for fires brought on by hot and dry weather.

The Hubbard Gap Fire in the Wildcat Hills in Banner County south of McGrew had burned about 4,000 acres as of Friday afternoon. In addition to threatening and affecting private agricultural lands, early estimates indicate the fire burned about three-fourths of the 1,829-acre Williams Gap Wildlife Management Area.

Among the multiple resources responding to the fire are airplanes and helicopters. Aircraft may use Lake Minatare State Recreation Area and other ponds and reservoirs in the region this weekend. In the event of aircraft activity, boaters are advised to stay near the shoreline.

On Friday, crews with air tankers also were responding to a wildfire in the Pine Ridge about 3 miles south-southeast of Chadron. It was estimated to be 4-5 acres early in the afternoon.

Crews responding to wildfires in Nebraska Panhandle

United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced that Cory D. Preitauer, 30, formerly of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced today in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Chief United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for conspiracy and production of child pornography. Preitauer was sentenced to 40 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp;

In March of 2019, a state search warrant was served at the home of a target living in Kansas City, Missouri. During a forensic examination of the computer seized in the Kansas City investigation the examiners located screenshots of a chat between the Kansas City target and Preitauer’s co-defendant Mathew Goad.&nbsp; During the chat, Goad indicated he had sexually assaulted a child and recorded that assault. Goad then sent the recording to the target. Further investigation revealed that Goad and Preitauer were both involved in the production of the video. After his arrest, Preitauer admitted to law enforcement that he and Goad created the video of the sexual assault. The child was four years old at the time the video was created. Goad was previously sentenced by this Court.

After today’s sentencing, FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Kristi Johnson said, “The FBI takes an active role in protecting children.&nbsp; The sentencing of Cory Preitauer is an example of our commitment to removing sexual predators from children’s lives.”

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. Nebraska Free Fishing and Park Entry Day set for Sept. 12

AUGUST 28, 2020 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— A North Platte man has been arrested following a pursuit in North Platte on Friday. The effort included the Nebraska State Patrol, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and North Platte Police Department.

At approximately 12:50 p.m. today, a trooper observed a Toyota SUV fail to stop at a stoplight at the intersection of Highway 83 and Walker Rd, south of Interstate 80. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled. The trooper pursued as the vehicle continued on surface roads south of I-80 for a short time before driving northbound on Highway 83 into North Platte.

As the vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 83, the trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the vehicle to a stop. The driver then fled on foot through a building construction site, entered one of the construction pickups on-site, and drove off. The trooper remained at the scene of the theft with the original vehicle.

A short time later, the driver was located at a residence on B Street by North Platte Police Officers, where he was taken into custody. The driver, Rosendo Duran, 28, of North Platte, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, motor vehicle theft, and violating a traffic control device. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

Duran also had two outstanding warrants from Hall County.

The driver, Rosendo Duran, 28, of North Platte, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, motor vehicle theft, and violating a traffic control device. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.Duran also had two outstanding warrants from Hall County.

McCOOK, Neb. (AP) - A 79-year-old McCook woman who complained about abuse from her husband for 30 years has been charged with first-degree murder in his death after she allegedly shot him while he slept, police said.

Lavetta Langdon was being held on $5 million bond after a court appearance Thursday. Her husband, Larry Langdon, 78, was found dead in the couple's home Aug. 20, The Lincoln Journal-Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/state-and-regional/nebraska/mccook-woman-charged-with-first-degree-murder-of-78-year-old-husband-judge-sets-bond/article_cb952cdc-5555-5088-b862-a0508be28ea9.html" target="_blank">reported.</a>

McCook police Detective Kevin Hodgson said officers who responded to a call about a fight at the home found Larry Langdon dead in the bedroom and Lavetta Langdon sitting in the living room.

Larry Langdon allegedly hit his wife several times earlier in the day and when he fell asleep, she held a gun to his chest and fired, then called police, Hodgson said.

The detective said Lavetta Langdon had complained about domestic violence from her husband for 30 years and allegedly had warned him she would kill him if he hit her again.

She was also charged with use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

CHAPPELL, Neb. (AP) — Authorities in western Nebraska say a 13-year-old boy has died in a fall from atop a grain bin. 

The Deuel County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened Sunday in Chappell, on the southern edge of the Nebraska Panhandle. 

Deputies and medics were called around 7 a.m. to the Frenchman Valley Coop for a report of an accident and found 13-year-old Casey Fox on the ground and unresponsive.

 An investigation determined he died of injuries sustained after he climbed a large grain bin and fell off.
