A severe thunderstorm came through Box Butte and Morrill County on the night of Thursday, July 9 bringing large hail.&nbsp;

An Alliance resident that lives 3 miles south of the city reported tennis ball size hail. 

Another resident reported golf ball size hail in the 1200 Block of Cheyenne. Trained weather spotters confirmed this.&nbsp;

Ping pong ball size hail was reported 2 miles east and 2 miles south of Alliance.&nbsp;

Tennis, golf and ping pong size hail reported in Alliance 

The Big Ten Conference is limiting fall sports to only conference games.&nbsp; 

The announcement came on Thursday afternoon and means three of Nebraska's football games have been canceled, leaving nine games on the schedule to play.&nbsp; Over the next several weeks I imagine we will hear more about how the conference plans to fill the newly-open weeks by shuffling game dates, or adding conference opponents to those open slots.

Nebraska has already removed games against Central Michigan, Cincinnati and South Dakota State from its official schedule on the team's website. The season opener is against Purdue on September 5, with the next game scheduled against Northwestern October 3.

Other exciting non-con match-ups that will no longer happen this fall as of today due to the announcement: Ohio State at Oregon, Michigan vs. Washington, Wisconsin vs Notre Dame, Michigan State vs. Miami, FL, and Penn State vs. Virginia Tech.

Three Husker football games canceled as Big Ten limits fall sports to conference-only games

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced the award of Community Service Tax Credits (CSP) to 25 nonprofit organizations to support education, healthcare, and housing projects across the state.

CSP is a tool that dramatically enhances fundraising efforts, providing a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities of less than 15,000 population and 50% in larger communities. For example, a donor making a $100 gift in a rural community receives a $70 tax credit when they file their state taxes, making the net cost to the donor only $30.

This year, CSP is distributing $1 million in awards for childcare and early childhood development projects, specifically for services to those under the age of 5.

“These nonprofit organizations provide education, healthcare and housing across Kansas,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly.&nbsp;“We must do everything we can to support them. Community Service Tax Credits help us build stronger communities and a stronger state.”

Awarded nonprofits were chosen through a competitive, score-based selection process.

For this fiscal year, the Department of Commerce is fully disbursing all CSP funds. Due to the amount of funds allocated, 25 of the 53 requested projects (constituting 47% of the total funds requested) are being awarded.

“These Community Service Tax Credit awards will be a major factor in the success of these important community projects,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Commerce David Toland.&nbsp;“There were so many high-caliber projects applying for these awards, and, unfortunately, the demand for credits exceeds the resources we have. However, we are grateful to have been able to support these many worthy projects.”

The awarded companies and the indicated need for funds are as follows:

About the Community Service Tax Credit Program (CSP)

Each year since 1994, the Kansas Community Service Program has given nonprofit organizations a way to improve their ability to undertake major capital fundraising drives for various projects. Tax credits are allocated each year and awarded on a competitive application basis to nonprofit organizations.

Projects eligible for tax credit awards include community service, crime prevention, health care and youth apprenticeship and technical training. Based on the scope and cost of the proposed project, applicants may request up to $250,000 in tax credits. Valley Hope in Norton awarded tax credits to begin new telecare program

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Residents in much of Nebraska were cleaning up and waiting for power to be restored Thursday after a line of severe weather sent high winds, hail, heavy rain and at least a few weak tornadoes Wednesday evening and overnight.

Weak tornadoes were reported Wednesday evening in unpopulated areas near Venango and Grant in southwestern Nebraska and Thedford in northwestern Nebraska, according to the National Weather Service in North Platte. Only minor tree damage was reported from those tornadoes, meteorologist Shawn Jacobs said.

Law enforcement and weather spotters in each of those areas reported multiple weak tornadoes, Jacobs said. The weather service was working to determine whether there were multiple separate tornadoes in each area or whether people were seeing the same tornado at different spots, he said.

More damage was caused overnight by straight-line winds as the storms moved east, Jacobs said.

"We did get reports of winds up to 70 mph, which did cause some damage to trees, power lines and some outbuildings," he said.

There was potential for scattered strong thunderstorms across the state on Thursday, Jacobs said, but a higher risk of severe weather is likely Friday in parts of north-central and eastern Nebraska.

Nebraska residents cleaning up following severe weather

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The number of people filing new unemployment claims in Nebraska surged last week to its highest level in nearly two months, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The department said 6,143 people filed initial claims for benefits during the week that ended July 4. That's a roughly 46% increase over the 4,203 new claims filed the previous week.

Nebraska Department of Labor officials said other Midwestern states saw increase as well. They also noted that the number of continuing unemployment claims decreased last week. Nebraska saw 53,673 regular unemployment claims last week, a decrease of 4.5% from the the prior week, when 56,219 claims were filed.

"We continue to analyze the claim numbers and track the progression of all claims to see what trends emerge," said State Labor Commissioner John Albin.

Nebraska's&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/4213f719a45647bc873ffb58783ffef3" target="_blank">online virus tracker</a>&nbsp;shows that the number of positive cases jumped by 224 on Wednesday, bringing the state total to 20,425 since the pandemic started. Of the total, more than 15,000 have recovered from the virus. The total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, remained unchanged Wednesday at 282.

State figures also show Nebraska with room remaining in hospitals to treat new patients. State officials said 39% of Nebraska's hospital beds, 46% of the intensive care beds and 78% of the ventilators in the state were available Wednesday.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.

Severe weather possible Thursday, Friday

HOLDREGE –&nbsp;On Wednesday, Governor Pete Ricketts attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new home in Holdrege constructed, in part, through a grant from the Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF).&nbsp; The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) administers the RWHF, which supports rural communities in their efforts to build affordable housing for working families.

“The Rural Workforce Housing Fund has been a key part of our strategy to make sure families can find a high-quality, affordable place to live,” said Gov. Ricketts. &nbsp;“Congratulations to the South Central Economic Development District and Phelps County Development Corporation on their work together to build this beautiful new home.”

On May 1, 2018, Gov. Ricketts announced South Central Economic Development District (SCEDD) as one of 14 recipients of the inaugural Rural Workforce Housing Fund grants. &nbsp;SCEDD serves 13 counties in South Central Nebraska by promoting rural economic development.&nbsp; In addition to grant monies from the State, the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority, SCEDD, and area donors made contributions to establish a Workforce Housing Revolving Loan Fund. &nbsp;The purpose of the fund is to assist the construction of great homes for working Nebraskans.&nbsp; Upon the sale of the homes, the money is repaid to the fund so that it can be loaned again.&nbsp; This creates a perpetual funding instrument for South Central Nebraska.&nbsp;

 </figure>HOLDREGE –&nbsp;On Wednesday, Governor Pete Ricketts attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new home in Holdrege constructed, in part, through a grant from the Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF).&nbsp; The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) administers the RWHF, which supports rural communities in their efforts to build affordable housing for working families.“The Rural Workforce Housing Fund has been a key part of our strategy to make sure families can find a high-quality, affordable place to live,” said Gov. Ricketts. &nbsp;“Congratulations to the South Central Economic Development District and Phelps County Development Corporation on their work together to build this beautiful new home.”On May 1, 2018, Gov. SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) - Officials in Nebraska's southern panhandle are asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture for help and are exploring other options to control what they say is an encroaching prairie dog problem in the region.

The Cheyenne County Board commissioners said Monday during a meeting that the animals are threatening to overrun the towns of Lodgepole, Sidney and Potter if more is not done to control their numbers, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://www.starherald.com/news/local_news/they-re-out-of-control-prairie-dogs-threatening-cheyenne-county-towns-commissioners-say/article_4059ef08-7d6d-5044-bd8a-eaa9a0b51bb4.html" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Commissioner Philip Sanders said the animals caused nearly $3,000 in damage last year to 2,600 acres in the county. The animals, he said, are already inside Lodgepole, a village of about 300 people.

"I'm willing to take any help that we can get at this point, because I feel like we've let Lodgepole down," Sanders said. "We're going to let other communities down. We can't do this any longer."

There is only one USDA wildlife specialist to help control animal populations - including coyotes, porcupines and raccoons. The county wants the USDA to hire additional staff, but the agency says there's no money for it. Now, the county is looking at private-sector help and even volunteers from the community to help control the prairie dog population.

Prairie dogs are native to Nebraska and live in colonies that create vast underground tunnels. They are considered an important to the region's ecological balance, but many view them as pests that destroy valuable grassland and pose a danger to cattle that can step in prairie dog holes and break legs.

New confirmed case of COVID-19 reported in Lincoln County

July 8, 2020 – North Platte, NE&nbsp;–&nbsp;Great Plains Health would like to urge the public to continue practicing social distancing and other safety measures as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

As COVID-19 numbers rise across the nation, Great Plains Health reminds the public to limit their exposure to the virus by following public health guidelines, such as wearing a mask or face covering, maintaining a social distance of six feet from others and practicing good hand hygiene.

With summer travel on the rise and events, such as weddings and graduations increasing, hospital officials ask for the public’s help in reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19.&nbsp;

“Even though Directed Health Measures have lessened restrictions, we still need to be cautious about the spread of COVID-19, said Mel McNea, chief executive officer. “This pandemic continues to be a dynamic challenge with local conditions changing by the day. It is important to recognize that re-opening is not the same as returning to ‘normal’, and now is not the time to let our guard down.”

“One of the most effective things we can do to protect ourselves and others is to wear a mask or face covering when out in public, said Jenny Lantis, Great Plains Health infection prevention coordinator. “It is also best to avoid crowds, wash your hands often and please stay home if you are sick.”

Great Plains Health urges public to remain vigilant, continues to operate with precautionary measures

LINCOLN, Neb.-Years of collaborative efforts to drive developments in health care, housing and downtown revitalization have earned the City of North Platte (pop. 23,814) State recognition. This week, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) announced the City’s ongoing membership in the State’s Economic Development Certified Community (EDCC) program. EDCC Program Coordinator and DED Business Development Consultant Ashley Rice-Gerlach and Governor Pete Ricketts’ West-Central Director Brittany Hardin honored community leaders during a special presentation on Tuesday, July 7.&nbsp;

North Platte is one of 40 Nebraska communities to earn EDCC status in the program, sponsored by the Nebraska Diplomats and administered by DED. State officials established the EDCC program in 2005 to recognize communities for preparedness to attract new industries and grow existing businesses. As part of the certification process, qualifying communities must identify a well-defined program that actively engages with the existing business community and offers a supportive environment for welcoming new economic development projects. This includes documenting available sites and buildings, local financing and incentive programs and a strategic plan for economic development. North Platte received original EDCC certification in 2010 and earned recertification in 2015 and 2020.

Over the past five years, collaborative efforts between local economic leaders, City officials and private industry partners contributed to several development opportunities in downtown North Platte. For example a cooperative effort between the City, the Downtown Association and the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corporation spearhead an ongoing $4 million revitalization project in the community’s soon-to-be designated “Canteen District.” The façade restoration project allowed for the removal of outdoor steel awnings, which had canopied storefronts for nearly 50 years. The project also incentivized business owners to begin historic building restorations in the century-old downtown area. In addition to local economic development assistance, the City received Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from DED for a portion of the project’s planning and construction.

Following years of tax liens and tax debts encompassing the downtown’s historic and abandoned Pawnee Hotel, the Chamber and Development Corporation purchased the building’s tax certificate to remove lien holders and sell property rights. Doing so paved the way for redevelopment of the 90-year-old hotel. Major renovations were also completed in the area’s historic Fox Theater and Prairie Arts Center buildings, made possible by local investors, grants and volunteers.&nbsp;

“Downtown developments not only demonstrate the City of North Platte’s preparedness for economic growth in the EDCC program, but also pay tribute to its rich history in a city known for its civic and community service,” said Nebraska Diplomats President Dan Duncan. “Through these ongoing restorations, local leaders have an opportunity to honor past generations and provide current and future business owners with a platform for growth in the Canteen District.”

A three-phase economic project in the Chamber and Development Corporation-owned Twin Rivers Business Park includes commercial developments on Halligan Drive, as well as a new warehouse district currently under construction. The multi-million-dollar project, led by Chief Industries/Prataria Ventures, will also include construction of a retirement village.

The Chamber and Development Corporation’s working relationship with Union Pacific Railroad led to the establishment of a new proposed industrial rail park in Lincoln County. The park’s establishment will serve as an additional tool to recruit new industries in the North Platte area, which will compliment a number of additional business parks with highway and air transportation opportunities. A $100,000 environmental studies and master planning effort is currently underway through the Nebraska Public Power District’s (NPPD) Site Ready Assistance Program, made possible by a $25,000 NPPD planning grant and a local $75,000 Quality Growth Fund grant.

An additional enhancement to air service was accomplished by the City of North Platte Airport Authority, with the recruitment of United Express Airlines/Sky West creating twice-daily direct flights in and out of Denver.

North Platte Area Chamber and Development President and CEO Gary Person says leaders’ ongoing collaboration exemplifies the community’s overall strategy for economic growth.

“I’m proud of our team for taking this process to heart and setting a standard of excellence in our approach to economic development,” Person said. “The North Platte area has a strong private-public partnership, and it works.&nbsp; When you have community leaders pulling in the same direction you can get things done, instead of fighting turf protection battles. We have laid some significant groundwork and came up with a five-year strategic action plan for 2020-2025, and we are excited to act upon each of those 29 specific goals. It will be critical to pass the renewal of the LB840 Quality Growth Fund in November to carry out many of these goals.”

The Chamber and Development Corporation’s “Shot in the Arm” housing incentive program continues to provide new living opportunities for local families. Since its inception, the program has established 60 new single-family speculative units and a 48-unit multifamily development project. Phase two of the project came to fruition through local and state partnerships totaling $1.2 million in incentives, including $383,400 in assistance from the State of Nebraska’s Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF). The City of North Platte’s LB840 fund, Chamber and Development Investment Partners, Union Pacific Railroad and Great Plains Health (GPH) generated remaining investments for the project.

Successful efforts in establishing North Platte as a Regional Medical Center were made possible by a $125 million new medical facility at GPH. Since the tower completion in 2015, GPH has been recognized regionally and nationally for innovative developments in the facility’s medical services and hospital’s patient services. Vetter Health Services’ expansion of the facility’s short and long-term service capabilities also positively impacted the medical community. GPH, Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center were instrumental in implementing a new, certified four-year nursing program to compliment an existing two-year nursing program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Career Academies established at North Platte Public Schools have increased student exposure to vocational and business training opportunities. The program has encouraged partnerships with 66 local businesses, engaging youth in internships, job shadowing and workforce development training.

Over the past five years, local investors established 121 businesses and nearly 900 jobs in North Platte. In addition, the community has been positively impacted by $142 million in capital investments. Since 2015, the costs of 27 commercial projects have exceeded $500,000 apiece.

“The Economic Development Certified Community status for North Platte is an important standard for us to achieve; it demonstrates our preparedness to meet the challenges of growing and developing our local economy,” said North Platte Mayor Dwight Livingston. “This accomplishment also is a testament to the outstanding cooperation between our city, county and schools — all working together as a team with our local business community and its leadership.&nbsp;The preparation, hard work and dedication that was needed to achieve this certification also prepares us strategically to move forward over the next five years; I feel confident we are moving the community in a positive direction.”

The Chamber and Development Corporation led recent efforts to assist local businesses in response to COVID-19 through the Quality Growth Fund. A technical assistance incentive program connected proprietors with financial institutions to apply for the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans. The Chamber and Development Corporation provided additional help through a gift card business boost program, which offered up to $2,000 in gift card reimbursements for local merchants. The programs have aided 227 area businesses so far.

Chamber and Development Corporation Board Chairman Dr. Rich Raska said the community’s vast leadership continues to drive growth in the area, and played a role in the City’s most recent EDCC designation.

“This has been a direct result of the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors, committees, and our hard-working staff over the past five years,” Dr. Raska said. “I commend the work of the countless hours of strategic planning and look forward to North Platte achieving economic success in the years to come.”

EDCC Program Coordinator and DED Business Development Consultant Ashley Rice-Gerlach and Governor Pete Ricketts’ West-Central Director Brittany Hardin honored community leaders during a special presentation on Tuesday, July 7.&nbsp;North Platte is one of 40 Nebraska communities to earn EDCC status in the program, sponsored by the Nebraska Diplomats and administered by DED. State officials established the EDCC program in 2005 to recognize communities for preparedness to attract new industries and grow existing businesses. As part of the certification process, qualifying communities must identify a well-defined program that actively engages with the existing business community and offers a supportive environment for welcoming new economic development projects. This includes documenting available sites and buildings, local financing and incentive programs and a strategic plan for economic development. North Platte received original EDCC certification in 2010 and earned recertification in 2015 and 2020.Over the past five years, collaborative efforts between local economic leaders, City officials and private industry partners contributed to several development opportunities in downtown North Platte. For example a cooperative effort between the City, the Downtown Association and the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corporation spearhead an ongoing $4 million revitalization project in the community’s soon-to-be designated “Canteen District.” The façade restoration project allowed for the removal of outdoor steel awnings, which had canopied storefronts for nearly 50 years. The project also incentivized business owners to begin historic building restorations in the century-old downtown area. In addition to local economic development assistance, the City received Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from DED for a portion of the project’s planning and construction.Following years of tax liens and tax debts encompassing the downtown’s historic and abandoned Pawnee Hotel, the Chamber and Development Corporation purchased the building’s tax certificate to remove lien holders and sell property rights. Doing so paved the way for redevelopment of the 90-year-old hotel. Major renovations were also completed in the area’s historic Fox Theater and Prairie Arts Center buildings, made possible by local investors, grants and volunteers.&nbsp;“Downtown developments not only demonstrate the City of North Platte’s preparedness for economic growth in the EDCC program, but also pay tribute to its rich history in a city known for its civic and community service,” said Nebraska Diplomats President Dan Duncan. “Through these ongoing restorations, local leaders have an opportunity to honor past generations and provide current and future business owners with a platform for growth in the Canteen District.”A three-phase economic project in the Chamber and Development Corporation-owned Twin Rivers Business Park includes commercial developments on Halligan Drive, as well as a new warehouse district currently under construction. The multi-million-dollar project, led by Chief Industries/Prataria Ventures, will also include construction of a retirement village.The Chamber and Development Corporation’s working relationship with Union Pacific Railroad led to the establishment of a new proposed industrial rail park in Lincoln County. The park’s establishment will serve as an additional tool to recruit new industries in the North Platte area, which will compliment a number of additional business parks with highway and air transportation opportunities. A $100,000 environmental studies and master planning effort is currently underway through the Nebraska Public Power District’s (NPPD) Site Ready Assistance Program, made possible by a $25,000 NPPD planning grant and a local $75,000 Quality Growth Fund grant.An additional enhancement to air service was accomplished by the City of North Platte Airport Authority, with the recruitment of United Express Airlines/Sky West creating twice-daily direct flights in and out of Denver.North Platte Area Chamber and Development President and CEO Gary Person says leaders’ ongoing collaboration exemplifies the community’s overall strategy for economic growth.“I’m proud of our team for taking this process to heart and setting a standard of excellence in our approach to economic development,” Person said. “The North Platte area has a strong private-public partnership, and it works.&nbsp; When you have community leaders pulling in the same direction you can get things done, instead of fighting turf protection battles. We have laid some significant groundwork and came up with a five-year strategic action plan for 2020-2025, and we are excited to act upon each of those 29 specific goals. It will be critical to pass the renewal of the LB840 Quality Growth Fund in November to carry out many of these goals.”The Chamber and Development Corporation’s “Shot in the Arm” housing incentive program continues to provide new living opportunities for local families. Since its inception, the program has established 60 new single-family speculative units and a 48-unit multifamily development project. Phase two of the project came to fruition through local and state partnerships totaling $1.2 million in incentives, including $383,400 in assistance from the State of Nebraska’s Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF). The City of North Platte’s LB840 fund, Chamber and Development Investment Partners, Union Pacific Railroad and Great Plains Health (GPH) generated remaining investments for the project.Successful efforts in establishing North Platte as a Regional Medical Center were made possible by a $125 million new medical facility at GPH. Since the tower completion in 2015, GPH has been recognized regionally and nationally for innovative developments in the facility’s medical services and hospital’s patient services. Vetter Health Services’ expansion of the facility’s short and long-term service capabilities also positively impacted the medical community. GPH, Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center were instrumental in implementing a new, certified four-year nursing program to compliment an existing two-year nursing program.&nbsp;&nbsp;Career Academies established at North Platte Public Schools have increased student exposure to vocational and business training opportunities. The program has encouraged partnerships with 66 local businesses, engaging youth in internships, job shadowing and workforce development training.Over the past five years, local investors established 121 businesses and nearly 900 jobs in North Platte. In addition, the community has been positively impacted by $142 million in capital investments. Since 2015, the costs of 27 commercial projects have exceeded $500,000 apiece.“The Economic Development Certified Community status for North Platte is an important standard for us to achieve; it demonstrates our preparedness to meet the challenges of growing and developing our local economy,” said North Platte Mayor Dwight Livingston. “This accomplishment also is a testament to the outstanding cooperation between our city, county and schools — all working together as a team with our local business community and its leadership.&nbsp;The preparation, hard work and dedication that was needed to achieve this certification also prepares us strategically to move forward over the next five years; I feel confident we are moving the community in a positive direction.”The Chamber and Development Corporation led recent efforts to assist local businesses in response to COVID-19 through the Quality Growth Fund. A technical assistance incentive program connected proprietors with financial institutions to apply for the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans. The Chamber and Development Corporation provided additional help through a gift card business boost program, which offered up to $2,000 in gift card reimbursements for local merchants. The programs have aided 227 area businesses so far.Chamber and Development Corporation Board Chairman Dr. Rich Raska said the community’s vast leadership continues to drive growth in the area, and played a role in the City’s most recent EDCC designation.“This has been a direct result of the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors, committees, and our hard-working staff over the past five years,” Dr. Raska said. “I commend the work of the countless hours of strategic planning and look forward to North Platte achieving economic success in the years to come.”

Sarah Tielke, 44, of Papillion, was charged Monday with unauthorized communication with an inmate, the Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/ex-prison-psychologist-charged-after-allegedly-being-caught-with-letter-from-state-pen-inmate/article_232fc91b-d592-5a53-91e1-e121c8750a26.html" target="_blank">reported</a>. A court affidavit said Tielke tried to put her bag into a locker on Feb. 25 after she was selected for a random search. A search of the bag turned up three cellphones and a four-page letter an inmate had written her suggesting there was a romantic relationship between them.

Tielke told investigators the cellphones belonged to her children, and she was later charged only in connection to the letter.

Tielke is set to make her first court appearance in the case later this month.

Nebraska Game and Parks to host “The Science of…” virtual webinar series

Tribal President Julian Bear Runner ordered the 72-hour lockdown prohibiting nonessential travel to or from the reservation through Thursday. 

The Rapid City Journal all tribal employees have been placed on administrative leave except for emergency personnel.

 The Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux have been at odds with Republican Gov. Kristi Noem over highway checkpoints on their reservations. Noem demanded that the tribes remove the checkpoints from federal and state highways, calling them illegal. 

The tribes began monitoring their borders several months ago in an effort to stop unnecessary visitors who might be carrying the coronavirus.&nbsp;

Oglala Sioux Tribe locks down reservation for three days

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraskans who lost their jobs will once again have to actively look for new employment to maintain their benefits, state officials said as they announced plans to resume Gov. Pete Ricketts' signature reemployment program.

The Nebraska Department of Labor said it will impose job-search requirements for recipients starting July 12.

In an executive order issued Monday, Ricketts said Nebraska is well into its gradual reopening of the state economy and employers are now listing more than 30,000 available jobs. Nebraska has seen a slowdown in new coronavirus cases and the state's hospitals still have a large amount of space to treat new patients, according to the state's&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/4213f719a45647bc873ffb58783ffef3" target="_blank">online tracking portal</a>.

"These conditions will facilitate the prosperity of Nebraskans and the economy," he said in the order.

Ricketts, a Republican, suspended the job-search requirements on March 15 as the coronavirus pandemic forced businesses to close and lay off workers, leading to a surge in unemployment. The suspension had originally been slated to cover unemployment claims through Aug. 1.

At its peak in early April,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/62dfec4b518c299b2510add292281a79" target="_blank">Nebraska had 26,539</a>&nbsp;new jobless claims in one week.

Nebraska's unemployment rate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a91c49639ccb93f0446f2aada6363150" target="_blank">more than doubled</a>&nbsp;to 8.4% in April, compared to the prior month. But the state's unemployment rate has stayed well below the national average. In May, Nebraska had the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/0f23bdc128b37bd2c91d92c8e0e7b02e" target="_blank">nation's lowest unemployment</a>&nbsp;rate, at 5.2%. The national rate at the time was 13.3%.

Even so, Nebraska's unemployment rate remains higher than normal because of the pandemic. The state had 56,219 people with continuing unemployment claims as of late June, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor. Those recipients will soon have to show that they're actively searching for work by applying for jobs, attending job-skills workshops, meeting with career counselors and other possible steps.

Ricketts created the first-in-the-nation "reemployment program" in 2015. The program imposes a work-search requirement but also includes one-on-one job-counseling services, a state-run database of unfilled jobs and personalized plans intended to help each unemployed person find work.

The requirements apply to workers receiving regular unemployment and the additional $600 weekly pandemic unemployment benefits. They also apply to self-employed workers receiving special pandemic unemployment benefits.

The suspension had originally been slated to cover unemployment claims through Aug. 1.At its peak in early April,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/62dfec4b518c299b2510add292281a79" target="_blank">Nebraska had 26,539</a>&nbsp;new jobless claims in one week.Nebraska's unemployment rate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a91c49639ccb93f0446f2aada6363150" target="_blank">more than doubled</a>&nbsp;to 8.4% in April, compared to the prior month. But the state's unemployment rate has stayed well below the national average. In May, Nebraska had the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/0f23bdc128b37bd2c91d92c8e0e7b02e" target="_blank">nation's lowest unemployment</a>&nbsp;rate, at 5.2%. The national rate at the time was 13.3%.Even so, Nebraska's unemployment rate remains higher than normal because of the pandemic. The state had 56,219 people with continuing unemployment claims as of late June, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor. Those recipients will soon have to show that they're actively searching for work by applying for jobs, attending job-skills workshops, meeting with career counselors and other possible steps.Ricketts created the first-in-the-nation "reemployment program" in 2015. The program imposes a work-search requirement but also includes one-on-one job-counseling services, a state-run database of unfilled jobs and personalized plans intended to help each unemployed person find work.The requirements apply to workers receiving regular unemployment and the additional $600 weekly pandemic unemployment benefits. They also apply to self-employed workers receiving special pandemic unemployment benefits.

In continuing our efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our
area and protect the health of our community, the West Central
District Health Department (WCDHD) is asking for your assistance in
identifying individuals who may have attended an event called “Music,
Friends and Fun” held Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the Cody Park

WCDHD warns of possible COVID-19 exposure at Cody Park Pavilion event, urges attendees to get tested

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-
If you love cars and car culture, you need
to plan on heading to the Platte River Mall in North Platte July 10th
and 11th,
2020 for the Platte River Cruise Night Event. This
is a car show unlike any car show! 

Over 200 cars will be in attendance, including, North Platte native Mat
Fhuere, owner of Mat’s Rods and Restorations in Salt Lake City, who is
bringing cars to show off. But not just any cars.&nbsp;He’s
bringing the Insane ’54 from Discovery’s “Monster Garage.”&nbsp;He’s
also bringing one of the builders, Gene Winfield, a.k.a. “King of
Kustoms”, to do live demonstrations on metal shaping.&nbsp;To top
it all off, the crew from “Detroit Muscle” is coming down to set
up and show off.&nbsp;

In
addition to the car show, girls can compete for the title of the 2020
Platte River Rockabilly Pinup and Little Miss Rockabilly, starting at
10am on Saturday, July 11th.
Bring your own power wheels down and watch as the kiddos cruise
around in the Kids Cruise, plus more activities for the kiddos
including a waterslide, wagon rides, and a petting zoo. Food
trucks and many unique craft, retail, and auto vendors will also be
on-site, so while the guys peruse the cars, the ladies can go inside
and shop! Then later, join us
on the “ones” and see your favorite makes and models of classic,
exotic, and custom cars, truck, motorcycles, or semis parade the
cruise route. Designated cruising times are Friday starting at 6pm
and Saturday starting at 5pm with a burnout contest at Sonic from
3-5pm on Saturday. The
Cruise
Route will be a loop from Leota St (around NebraskaLand National
Bank) to 4th Street (down Dewey and around the Lincoln County
Courthouse).
Add it all up, and every car
nut who comes to North Platte July 10-11th is in for an awesome time.

To
cap the evening off, there will be live music featuring Classic Rock
Band, Easy Street, followed by Van Crue Len, the first Van
Halen/Motley Crue tribute band, starting at 7pm in the Platte River
Mall parking lot in front of the former Herbergers building. Tickets
are $5 in advance, or $10 at the gate.

social will take place at the Ramada by Wyndham/Sandhills Convention

3rd annual Platte River Cruise Night set for July 10 & 11 in North Platte

LINCOLN, Neb.–Bunny Bokoskie of North Platte is the sixth winner of a silver 2020 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew Flex Fuel truck in the 25th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game.

Bokoskie purchased her winning Truck$ &amp; Buck$ ticket at Kwik Stop #3 at 1421 South Dewey Street in North Platte. Bokoskie matched three “lightning” symbols in Game 10 and won the truck.

Nebraska Lottery officials presented Bokoskie with her prize on Monday, July 6 at Kwik Stop.

Bokoskie said she bought five tickets and scratched them off. The first four won her a couple of bucks, but the fifth one was the lucky one.

“I’ve been sort of lucky and won some things,” she said, “but nothing like this.”
