LINCOLN, Neb. – In a continued, proactive effort to prevent the potential for the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission temporarily will close state park and recreation area playgrounds and play structures beginning March 30.

The closures are in keeping with national recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which encourages maintaining physical distance’ and limiting in-person social interactions.

Game and Parks will continue to keep open state park and recreation areas grounds and trails, which provide adequate room for proper physical distancing for the health and safety of the public. These recreation areas also offer opportunities to hike and fish while maintaining a 6-foot distance between healthy guests. Game and Parks to temporarily close playgrounds, structures

(Lincoln, NE) With Financial Literacy Month beginning in April, and with thousands of Nebraska school children away from school due to the COVID-19 virus, Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante today announced a free, innovative and interactive online resource designed to give Nebraska students access to financial education resources during extended absences from school.&nbsp; Lessons will include topics such as financial readiness, mental wellness, career exploration and character development.

Hosted by the social impact technology leader EVERFI, Digital Lessons for Remote Learning offers kindergarten through 12th grade students interactive, online lessons on the importance of financial literacy. State Treasurer Murante announces free online financial education resource for students and adults

To help families and caregivers make the most of&nbsp;their child's&nbsp;out-of-school learning time during this uncertain period of home and social isolation, Beyond School Bells,&nbsp;Nebraska's Afterschool and Summer Learning Network, is developing a regular, weekly series of “virtual backpacks”&nbsp; packed with a curated set of national, state and local educational experiences that&nbsp;families&nbsp;can use to&nbsp;enhance&nbsp;home-based learning&nbsp;for Nebraska's youth.&nbsp;All families need are a&nbsp;few household items and a&nbsp;big&nbsp;imagination.&nbsp;

Central District Health working with clinics to prevent spread of COVID-19

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A 31-year-old North Platte man was arrested over the weekend following an alleged assault that involved a gun.

On March 29, at around 1:23 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2400 block of West 9th Street.

Officers arrived and met with a victim who stated that they had been assaulted by Cody Williams.

The victim told officers that, during the incident, Williams had produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim then struck him with the gun.

Police say the victim's injuries corroborated his account of the events that took place.

Williams had already left the scene when officers arrived, however, they were able to locate his vehicle a short time later in the 400 block of North Jeffers and initiate a traffic stop.

Police say it appeared that Williams was intoxicated when they made contact with him, and officers could see a handgun in the vehicle. Officers seized the gun and determined that it was stolen.

Following further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest Williams on suspicion of terroristic threats, 2nd-degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, driven under the influence and possession of a stolen firearm.

Additionally, police say officers also located suspected methamphetamine in the vehicle. That substance was sent to the Nebraska State Crime Lab for testing. More charges may be forthcoming, pending the results of the test.

Officers transported Williams to the Lincoln County Detention Center where he is being held pending an appearance in County Court.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-There is no doubt that one of the industries that have been hit hardest by the outbreak of COVID-19 is the food and beverage industry.

Across the state of Nebraska, many restaurants have had to completely revamp the way they serve their customers with many offering curbside pickup, delivery, and takeout. But what about a little pick me up.

Until last week, Nebraska state law prohibited open alcoholic beverage containers in vehicles. But that all changed when Governor Pete Ricketts issued an executive order permitting mixed drinks to be served takeout, provided they were in a cup with a lid.

The responses to the Governor's order have been, well, mixed. 

Many Nebraskans feel that this will only increase the problem of driving under the influence and, in turn, lead to more alcohol-related accidents. Yet others, are elated that they can get takeout and include their favorite adult beverage with their order.&nbsp;

But how does law enforcement feel about this new temporary change to Nebraska's liquor laws?

The Post reached out to North Platte Chief of Police Daniel Hudson and asked him that very question.

"The department supports the Governor's move to support local business during this incredible time of hardship and uncertainty," said Hudson.

"The North Platte Police Department would like to remind the community that the Governor's policy allows individuals to purchase and transport a mixed drink in a container with a lid, however, it does not allow those alcoholic beverages to be consumed in a vehicle or a public place," Hudson added.

What it really comes down to is a responsibility and common sense.

"We ask that our community continues to support local businesses, but remind you that the North Platte Police Department will continue to enforce open container, public drinking and driving while intoxicated statutes," said Hudson.&nbsp;

So, whether you choose to take advantage of takeout mixed drinks or not, remember that a crisis does not exempt us from the laws of the land.&nbsp;

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) - An inmate has punched two staff members at the state prison in southeast Nebraska - the second assault on staffers there in less than 10 days.

The Nebraska Correctional Services Department said in a news release Sunday that the inmate erupted Saturday at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution after refusing orders to stop violating housing unit rules. He punched one of the staffers several times in the head and torso and assaulted another staffer before being restrained.

One of the staffers required two stitches to close a wound and the other was treated for facial injuries as well.

The names of those involved haven't been released.

North Platte man wins $77,777 on Nebraska Lottery scratch ticket

GERING, Neb. (AP) - The first confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported in far western Nebraska's Scotts Bluff County, the state said.

The patient is a man in his 30s who has been in isolation at his home since Tuesday, local health officials said.

His case and 10 other newly reported cases brought the&nbsp;<a href="http://dhhs.ne.gov/coronavirus" target="_blank">state total</a>&nbsp;to 120, the Nebraska Health and Human Services Department said late Sunday. More than 2,200 people have tested negative.

For most people, COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The department said earlier Sunday that it was working with the operators of an assisted living center in Blair to empty it because several workers and residents had tested positive for COVID-19. A ninth confirmed case in Washington County has been related to the outbreak at the facility, Carter Place.

Residents who tested positive and those considered to have been exposed to the new virus have been moved out and are in isolation at other health care facilities, the department said. Staffers who tested positive are self-isolating. The center will be disinfected.

Also Sunday, Gov. Pete Ricketts' order limiting public gatherings to 10 people or fewer was extended to Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton counties. Fourteen other counties are already under the restrictions.

LOGAN COUNTY— Three people were injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Sunday in Logan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by Christie R. Lacey , 27, Chicago, was eastbound on U.S. 40 five miles west of U.S. 83.

The driver&nbsp; lost control of the vehicle, entered the south ditch, overcorrected back onto the roadway and struck a&nbsp; 2012 Mazda passenger vehicle driven by Mary Kathleen Magley, 60, Monument head-on.

EMS transported&nbsp;Lacey, Magley and a passenger in the Mazda Wayne F. Magley, 61, Oakley, to the Logan County Hospital. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

3 hospitalized after head-on crash in NW Kansas

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Many of us have spent the last couple of months scrolling through social media and emails looking for the latest updates on the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

The majority of us watch from afar, concerned for the welfare of our fellow Americans, but feeling pretty safe here in the middle of the country. Then the news broke that we had confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lincoln County.

This is the point where a lot of us in Lincoln County began to view the pandemic with a little more seriousness, with a little more attentiveness.

Being in the radio and news business, we at Eagle Radio, like the rest of our colleagues in the media, immersed ourselves in the news, working sun up to sundown trying to keep the people in our area informed of what was going on. We never once stopped to think that this "unseen enemy" as it is being referred to would directly impact our Eagle family.

Then, on the morning of March 25, one of our employees contacted management and stated that they had awoken suffering from a sore throat, a fever, and a dry cough...the tell-tale symptoms of COVID-19.

The employee immediately self-quarantined and contacted their primary care physician (PCP) at the earliest convenience. The PCP recommended that the employee come to their office for further diagnosis.

Upon arrival, the employee informed their PCP that the symptoms came on fast and included dry cough, fever, and shortness of breath that would come and go.

After some preliminary testing, the employee was provided with a questionnaire which was then faxed to the West Central District Health Department.&nbsp;

Upon reviewing the information, officials at WCDHD and the PCP recommended the employee for testing, which was taking place behind Great Plains Health.

Upon arrival at the testing site, the employee was greeted by a nurse in full personal protective equipment and given some basic information regarding the test.&nbsp;

Then the news broke that we had confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lincoln County.This is the point where a lot of us in Lincoln County began to view the pandemic with a little more seriousness, with a little more attentiveness.Being in the radio and news business, we at Eagle Radio, like the rest of our colleagues in the media, immersed ourselves in the news, working sun up to sundown trying to keep the people in our area informed of what was going on. We never once stopped to think that this "unseen enemy" as it is being referred to would directly impact our Eagle family.Then, on the morning of March 25, one of our employees contacted management and stated that they had awoken suffering from a sore throat, a fever, and a dry cough...the tell-tale symptoms of COVID-19.The employee immediately self-quarantined and contacted their primary care physician (PCP) at the earliest convenience. Eagle Radio North Platte employee tests negative for COVID-19

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska State Fair's executive director is stepping down and will serve as a consultant for the rest of her contract, which runs through next January.

The State Fair Board voted Friday to accept Lori Cox's departure after running the event for two years.

Cox, who was named the fair's executive director in January 2018, took a medical leave of absence starting March 13.

The fair board said Cox discovered and reported instances of potential waste and financial mismanagement during her tenure, and her knowledge of the situation could be helpful to investigators.

Beth Smith, chairwoman of the Fair Board, said during the meeting that there is an ongoing investigation into possible irregularities involving State Fair finances.

The fair board approved a budget at a Nov. 22 meeting during which members learned the 2019 fair lost a projected $1.4 million. Eight fair employees lost their jobs in December as fair officials took steps to firm up finances.

The board voted to make Jaime Parr, the fair's director of sales, the interim director.

Omaha, Neb&nbsp;– A study by UNMC/Nebraska Medicine/NSRI researchers recently posted on the open pre-publication site BioRxiv, provides new evidence of SARS-CoV-2 environmental contamination in COVID-19 patient care areas. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus which causes COVID-19 disease, which is now a worldwide pandemic.

This rapid response research represents the mission of the Global Center for Health Security to advance efforts to respond SARS-CoV-2. The study found high levels of the virus contamination by PCR on commonly used surfaces and in the air of rooms of COVID-19 patients.&nbsp;Air samplers from hallways outside of rooms where staff were moving in and out of doors were also positive. The study suggests that COVID-19 patients, even those who are only mildly ill, may create aerosols of virus and contaminate surfaces that may pose a risk for transmission.

&nbsp;“Our findings show how important it is for health care workers providing direct care to these patients to take enhanced transmission precautions,” said John Lowe, PhD, vice chancellor for Inter-professional Health Security Training and Education. “That means wearing the proper personal protective equipment, using negative air pressure rooms for these patients whenever possible and being mindful about the&nbsp;method of entering and exiting these rooms.”

During the initial isolation of 13 people confirmed positive with COVID-19 infection, air and surface samples were collected in eleven isolation rooms to examine environmental contamination. Many commonly used items, toilet facilities, and air samples had evidence of the virus, indicating that SARS-CoV-2 is widely disseminated in the environment. These findings indicate that disease might be spread through both direct (droplet and person-to-person) as well as indirect contact (contaminated objects and airborne transmission) and suggests airborne isolation precautions could be appropriate.

“Our team was already taking airborne precautions with the initial patients we cared for,” said James Lawler, MD, infectious diseases expert and director of the Global Center for Health Security at UNMC. “This report reinforces our suspicions.&nbsp;It’s why we have maintained COVID patients in rooms equipped with negative air flow and will continue to make efforts to do so – even with an increase in the number of patients. Our health care workers providing care will be equipped with the appropriate level of personal protective equipment. Obviously, more research is required to be able to characterize environmental risk.”

“Studies like these are needed to understand proper precautions for healthcare workers, first responders and others who care for the ill and are needed to combat this pandemic,” said Joshua Santarpia, PhD, assoc. professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC and research director for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction at the National Strategic Research Institute. “This ongoing work will continue to improve our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and help identify ways to improve safety in the care of patients with this disease.”

The investigative team stresses that careful environmental cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, including those in the bathroom, is important. The CDC and the WHO recommend that appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, be utilized in the care of persons known or suspected to be infected with SARS-CoV-2.

New COVID-19 testing guidelines

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Governor Pete Ricketts announced that the state’s fourth COVID-19 related Directed Health Measure (DHM) includes Burt, Cuming, Madison, and Stanton counties, which will be in effect until May 6th&nbsp;unless renewed.

The first DHM, issued on March 18th, applies to Cass, Douglas, and Sarpy counties and is in effect until at least April 30th.

The second DHM, issued on March 25th, applies to Dodge, Lancaster, Saunders, and Washington counties and is in effect until at least May 6th.

The third DHM, issued on March 28th, applies to&nbsp;Butler, Hall, Hamilton, Merrick, Polk, Seward, and York counties and is in effect until May 6th&nbsp;unless renewed.
