The COVID-19 virus is ever-changing. At this time, the West Central District has NO confirmed cases of the virus however in response to community health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus, the decision has been made to close the North Platte Catholic Schools for the next week (March 16th - March 20th). This includes all scheduled school and non-school events, practices, and competitions.

Officials announced Sunday that school will stay in session and officials will continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte Public Schools have announced that they will be closing schools temporarily and extended the school year to late May.

The announcement was made to staff and families through the following email:

As we have mentioned, the COVID-19 virus is an ever-changing conversation and invokes a great deal of discussion and collaboration with our federal, state, and local health officials.&nbsp; At this time, the West Central District has NO confirmed cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19); however, testing for the virus is ongoing.

We would like to provide you with a timeline of events that have occurred over the past few days.

10:00 a.m. – Conference Call with Governor Ricketts and State Health Officials

1:30 p.m. – Conference Call with Nebraska Department of Education

2:30 p.m. – In person meeting with West Central District Health Department (WCDHD, local emergency departments, and Great Plains Health

4:15 p.m. – Press conference with the task force

7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – District Directors and Executive Staff Planned strategies for educational engagement during a closure.

2:00 p.m. – Principals, Directors, Executive Staff, and WCDHD met in person for a conference call with the Nebraska Department of Education, State Health Officials, and Governor Ricketts

4:00 p.m. – Conference Call with ESU 16

4:45 p.m. – Face to Face Meeting with WCDHD and NPPSD Executive Team

Our primary concern at this time is preventative and precautionary measures.&nbsp; We will continue to encourage our families to practice social distancing and proper hygiene and hand-washing.&nbsp; With this being said, NPPSD will implement an extended break for the balance of the week of March 16.&nbsp; All NPPSD schools are closed the week of March 16, 2020, with plans to reopen on Monday, March 23, 2020.&nbsp; During this time, staff and the community will not have access to any academic building.&nbsp; This decision will extend our school year to May 27, 2020, for students (more information will follow as it becomes available).

We do realize surrounding schools are closed for two full weeks.&nbsp; Please note they are combining this with a pre-planned spring break. The NPPSD decision to close for additional time will be made on a week to week basis and could change at any time.&nbsp; These decisions are not made lightly and are in conjunction with the Public Health Command Center.

At this time, we ask that students and families continue to practice social distancing, good hygiene, and give careful consideration when visiting public venues.&nbsp; If you have specific health care questions, please contact your health care provider.

KEARNEY, Neb.-Kearney Public Schools and Hastings Public Schools have joined Grand Island Public Schools in announcing a temporary closure of all public schools.&nbsp;

Kearney, Hastings Public Schools implement 'extended spring break' due to COVID-19

Recently, the epidemiologic term “flattening the curve” has been widely cited in the media, including a recent article in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/livewellnebraska/health/omaha-area-hospitals-getting-ready-in-case-coronavirus-cases-surge/article_6a462a37-f6d2-5a04-9cd5-33f3217d035b.html" target="_blank">Omaha World-Herald</a>. I want to tell you what this means and why it is critically important for the health of Nebraskans.

There are four things to understand in the graph below.

One infected person infects about 2.5 others; they in turn infect 2.5 each. So very quickly, that one person results in 10 cases in the community – and that continues. The current estimates suggest that if 100 people become infected, five will need to be hospitalized. That seems like a small number, but in the state of Nebraska, over an 8-week period that is between 30,000 and 90,000 additional hospitalized people and 12,000 to 20,000 of those might need an intensive care bed. Key point:&nbsp;There are not that many hospital beds in Nebraska.&nbsp;We will be unable to provide lifesaving care for people with this infection. Do not forget, in addition to the patients with this new infection your hospital still must take care of those with heart attacks, cancer, strokes and many other conditions. Most of the hospitals in our community are “full” as I type this.

We need to reduce the transmission of this virus in the community. The advice from public health leaders should be followed:

Every hospital in our community is actively planning and&nbsp;collaborating with each other and with the public health department. However, we need your help to “flatten the curve.”

 <li>If we do not take protective measures, we will be unable to care for those needing hospitalization. There are not enough beds, ventilators or other services for the critically ill</li><li>Protective measures delay the outbreak peak</li><li>Protective measures can diminish overall cases and the health impacts</li><li>Importantly, with protective measures hospitals have enough capacity to take care of patients</li>

In addition, efforts to protect the most vulnerable individuals in nursing homes need to be intensified</li><li>If you are an employee who can work from home, discuss doing so with the management of your company</li>

The emergency leave is available to all employees, including temporary and student workers. Part-time employees will be eligible for a prorated amount of time.

This temporary administrative leave policy can be used during the current pandemic, and we will re-evaluate the program as well as other leave policies as needed in the coming weeks.

Campus leaders are strongly encouraged to use alternate work arrangements and telecommute options to keep the continuity of campus operations to the extent possible.

As the spread of the coronavirus continues to disrupt many of our personal and professional lives, we find ourselves in a period of unique challenge and uncertainty.

Univ. of Nebraska offers employees 80 hours of paid administrative leave amid COVID-19 concerns

With the coronavirus causing school to be canceled, my son brought his schoolwork home.&nbsp;He shared with us a Greek mythology worksheet about Pandora’s Box. If you aren’t familiar, the Greek god Zeus gave a wedding present to beautiful Pandora but instructed her not to open it.&nbsp;Like many of us, impatience and curiosity got the best of her and she opened it anyway which caused a lot of new problems.

1Similarly, with Covid-19, this new virus is already out of the box. This is a global pandemic and we are being asked to be patient and conform to social distancing to help slow down the spread. This is our current challenge.&nbsp;Every day we hear about sporting events, concerts, schools, and travel plans being cancelled. This is the best-known method to slow the spread of Covid-19.&nbsp;The less we are mixing and mingling, the less the virus is spreading.&nbsp;

When we slow the spread, we give our healthcare systems the best chance at having the resources on hand to keep up with the number of people who need help at any given time. In areas of the world where cases of Covid-19 were allowed to spike, the healthcare systems are overwhelmed.&nbsp;Some hospitals don’t have enough beds, enough ventilators, enough medicine to treat everyone that needs help.&nbsp;They don’t have enough masks and gowns to protect their staff. In these situations, doctors are having to decide who gets treatment, and who doesn’t.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thankfully, of those who become infected, possibly 80 percent will have only mild symptoms. Some may not have symptoms at all. However, we need to understand that some will become very sick and some will die.&nbsp;Unlike influenza, Covid-19 is a new virus. Therefore, none of us have immunity from the past or from immunizations.&nbsp;There is no herd immunity.&nbsp;

1That is why events are cancelled.&nbsp;That is why social distancing is urged. Since most people will only have mild symptoms and some people may not have symptoms at all, the virus can be spread easily without us realizing it.&nbsp;We all need to be patient and follow the instructions from health officials. By doing so, we can hopefully prevent a large spike of a lot of sick people at once and avoid a worst-case scenario.

My son’s main impression from his school lesson was that despite the sickness and problems that were released, Pandora closed the lid and held hope inside the box.&nbsp;I have hope that together we will contain this virus and, in the end, this, too, shall pass.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Walmart in North Platte to be open limited hours during coronavirus outbreak

GRAND ISLAND, Neb.-Jerry Moritz has been attending horse races at Fonner Park regularly since 1970 and almost every day in recent years.

The track in central Nebraska was one of the few sporting venues in the country open to fans Saturday, and the 73-year-old from Grand Island wasn't going to let concerns over the new coronavirus stop him from going.

"If we had a dozen people in the hospital here and two or three died, then I would probably back off," Moritz said, sipping beer out of a plastic cup. "I feel like some people probably got it and don't even know it and are already over it."

No cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Hall County, where Fonner Park is located, and that was part of the reason track CEO Chris Kotulak decided to allow fans for the weekend racing programs.

Kotulak said the clubhouse and other viewing areas are being cleaned with increased frequency. Leaflets reminding employees and guests to practice good hygiene were distributed on counters and tabletops in the clubhouse and other viewing areas. As an added precaution, Kotulak visited the jockeys' room Saturday morning to make sure none of the riders was experiencing any symptoms associated with the new coronavirus.

Later, jockeys voted not to race because of dangerous track conditions caused by a snowstorm that moved through the area. After it was announced that racing was canceled, about 50 people stayed at Fonner Park to wager on races simulcast from other tracks.

Fonner has been a major economic driver in Grand Island, population 40,000, since opening in 1954. The track employs 60 full-time workers and more than 200 seasonal part-timers.

Kotulak said he would have no problem with closing the races to fans if advised to do so by health officials.

Joe Brown of Grand Island, at a table in the enclosed grandstand doing some handicapping with a friend, said he wasn't overly concerned about getting sick even though he's 63 and has underlying health issues.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. The vast majority of people recover from the virus.

"I'm that part of the population that wants to worry about it," he said. "But I kind of figured I haven't heard of anything around Grand Island yet, so maybe now will be the last time we get out in a group like this and have some fun."

His friend, Ron Tenski, said his wife encouraged him to enjoy a day at the races, and he also got the green light from his doctor.

"I had my physical yesterday," said Tenski, 68, of Grand Island, "and he said don't be afraid to be out and about."

Other tracks across the country continued running races with no fans in the stands, including Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where the $1 million Rebel Stakes - a major Kentucky Derby prep - was set for later Saturday. Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, hosted another prep, the Jeff Ruby Steaks.

Fan could wager online and watch the Derby preps shown on national television.

At Santa Anita in Arcadia, California, bugler Jay Cohen blew his horn to the empty grandstand, with only trainers, jockeys and those working directly with the horses on hand to hear.

The scent of the track's famed carved sandwiches - turkey, corned beef and prime rib - wasn't wafting through the air. The food stands were shut down. There was no one manning the admission gates, selling programs and Daily Racing Forms or operating the elevators or gift shop, and no mutual clerks to sell and cash tickets.

Without fans yelling for their favorites, the sounds of jockeys chirping to their mounts and horses' hooves pounding the dirt track as they flew toward the finish line were easily heard.

Rain began falling again as the afternoon wore on with fog nearly obscuring the view of the San Gabriel Mountains. Workers could be seen cleaning various public areas of Santa Anita.

Laurel Park in Maryland was business as usual in the paddock and on the track, and announcer Dave Rodman's calls echoed off the empty building.

Someone could be overheard in the paddock saying, "It's so weird when they're running and nobody's cheering."

Jockey Forest Boyd, who won the day's second race, said she didn't notice horses handling the situation any differently. She was able to keep her focus as a rider.

"It's a little eerie," Boyd said. "But luckily we're all out here doing our job and keeping the economy going."

Instead of the roar of fans, individual owners and trainers could be heard yelling for their horses while races were underway. Trainer Lacey Gaudet slammed the rail in joy after jockey Alex Cintron rode Jefazo to a victory.

"It's very weird not having fans out here," Gaudet said. "I think it's going to be a learning curve, I guess. I don't really know. It's the first time that we've really had to deal with this."

Coronavirus can't keep fans from going to Nebraska racetrack

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Courts in Nebraska and Iowa have laid out plans on how to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, including a move by federal courts in Nebraska to nix all jury trials and grand juries for the remainder of March.

In Nebraska, Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike Heavican issued an order requiring all courts to remain open, while putting some restrictions in place. Anyone with an elevated risk of transmitting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/VirusOutbreak" target="_blank">COVID-19</a>&nbsp;must inform the court and opposing counsel so that hearings, depositions and other meetings can be rescheduled. Those at elevated risk are also barred from attending trials, hearings and other court-related functions.

The Iowa Supreme Court has implemented similar restrictions, adding that courts may conduct meetings and hearings remotely via video or phone conferencing in an effort to curtail the spread of the virus.

"All such efforts must be consistent with keeping courts open to the fullest possible extent while protecting public safety by mitigating the impact of coronavirus/COVID-19," the Iowa high court said in its order.

In his order, Chief U.S. District Judge John Gerard said that Nebraska's federal courts have "a robust capacity for conducting business remotely" and that most operations will continue unimpeded.

"But obviously, not all of the court's work can be completed at a distance," Gerard wrote. "In particular, the need for in-court hearings must be balanced against the risk associated with such contact, and jury proceedings are inadvisable in the current environment."

For most people, the coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

According to the World Health Organization, people with mild case recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe cases may take three to six weeks to get better. Disney announced Friday that “Frozen 2” will begin streaming on Disney-Plus Sunday, three months earlier than expected. Most upcoming new releases have been postponed due to the virus, including Disney's own lineup. 

Few March or April movies remain on the calendar. The move by Disney could presage how other media companies funnel their films to streaming services in the coming weeks as studios look to find ways to capitalize on audiences stuck at home.&nbsp;

Disney sends 'Frozen 2' to streaming for housebound families

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Creighton right-hander Ben Dotzler was supposed to be in the bullpen at TD Ameritrade Park this weekend, readying himself to pitch against Northern Colorado.

Molly Little, who plays lacrosse for Denver, expected to be on the road for a much anticipated match against Michigan, the team the Pioneers beat to reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last year.

Avrey Steiner thought she would be with her softball teammates for Illinois' first home games of the season against Bowling Green and Green Bay.

Everything changed for thousands of college athletes when the NCAA announced Thursday it was canceling all spring sports championships, along with remaining winter championships, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Conferences followed, saying they were temporarily or permanently shutting down their regular seasons.

Suddenly, athletes who put in long hours juggling commitments to their sports and academics had lots of free time.

"We didn't work a whole year," Dotzler said, "to play 15 games."

Little said she woke up at 6:30 every morning to go to the training room to rehab an injury and stretch before lifting weights and running - all before going to a 2 1/2-hour practice and then her classes.

"There's nothing that can prepare you for the feeling of your season being done, and it's not because you lost in NCAAs," Little said. "I spent many hours crying with teammates. You work your whole life to get to this point, to play on this big stage, and to have it taken from you is devastating."

<a href="https://twitter.com/avrey_steiner/status/1238209868844224512?s=20" target="_blank">Steiner said she was doing fine emotionally</a>&nbsp;until she started cleaning out her locker Friday.

"That really got me," she said. "A lot of people are going to say, 'Oh, yeah, this is like a week off or getting a couple days off. I guarantee you it's going to hit me and other people in the coming weeks."

Some good news arrived on Friday when the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/be7a2ffe4b43d4956ad78a9d4d0ae7b0" target="_blank">NCAA informed schools that spring athletes would be given another year of eligibility</a>&nbsp;to make up for their lost season. Details must be worked out.

<a href="https://twitter.com/Statesfort/status/1238535977196552192?s=20" target="_blank">States Fort, a senior on the Coastal Carolina men's golf team,&nbsp;</a>hopes to return for another year even though he'll graduate in May.

"I would try to make it work with grad courses," he said. "I would do everything in my power as long as the finances are there. I would love to come back and play with these guys."

Not all seniors will be able to take advantage of being granted an extra year. Some already have jobs lined up. Others have been accepted into graduate programs at other schools. There are athletes who currently are on partial scholarships, and they may not be able to afford paying the difference for another year.

Though the eligibility extension offers some consolation, it will be impossible for athletes to duplicate the experiences of playing with their 2020 teams.

The Richmond women's lacrosse team, for example, was off to a program-best 7-0 start and ranked in the top 20 nationally for the first time since 2008.

"We just accelerated into the season and started off so hot," senior goaltender Megan Gianforte said. "Personally, I thought I was peaking this year. I felt I was in the best condition for this season. That's why I was so excited for it. We brought in so much talent, which helps me defensively.

"I'm leaving Richmond now with such unfinished business, knowing all the potential we could have had. I just know how much more we have to give."

Now the spring athletes are left to wonder what they'll do with themselves.

"It is just heartbreaking to see these kids face this unfortunate situation," longtime University of San Francisco baseball coach Nino Giarratano said. "They are too young."

Creighton sophomore Tommy Steier said he and Dotzler, his roommate, have been spending a lot of time hanging out with teammates, rehashing old stories and plotting their immediate futures.

Creighton isn't allowing athletes to use the school's training facilities during the shutdown. Baseball players will work out on their own and prepare to join summer teams in a few months - if the summer leagues operate.

Fort, the Coastal Carolina golfer, said a temporary sports stoppage would have been more appropriate, followed by a reassessment of the situation. He wishes the NCAA would have waited before canceling championships scheduled for months from now.

"I can understand basketball. That's a spectator sport where you have a ton of people constantly rubbing shoulders. I can almost understand baseball. But sports like (men's) volleyball, softball, golf and lacrosse don't have as much of a pronounced fan base."

Creighton's baseball team was busing back to Omaha from Minnesota on Thursday when the players' Twitter feeds started showing conference basketball tournaments being canceled.

An hour after the players got home they received a text telling them to return to campus for a meeting. Steier and Dotzler said everyone sensed what was coming.

As coach Ed Servais broke the news, seniors, who wouldn't know for another 24 hours they would be allowed to come back next year, broke into tears.

"It was hard to see all of them knowing they were losing what they love to do," Steier said.

Gianforte, the Richmond lacrosse goalie, said she and her teammates had a feeling as early as Wednesday afternoon their season might be in jeopardy. That's when the Ivy League announced it was closing down spring sports.

"I think the other conferences were feeling some peer pressure," she said.

Then the NBA announced Wednesday night it was suspending its season.

"That," Gianforte said, "is when we knew we were goners."

Details must be worked out.<a href="https://twitter.com/Statesfort/status/1238535977196552192?s=20" target="_blank">States Fort, a senior on the Coastal Carolina men's golf team,&nbsp;</a>hopes to return for another year even though he'll graduate in May."I would try to make it work with grad courses," he said. "I would do everything in my power as long as the finances are there. I would love to come back and play with these guys."Not all seniors will be able to take advantage of being granted an extra year. Some already have jobs lined up. Others have been accepted into graduate programs at other schools. There are athletes who currently are on partial scholarships, and they may not be able to afford paying the difference for another year.Though the eligibility extension offers some consolation, it will be impossible for athletes to duplicate the experiences of playing with their 2020 teams.The Richmond women's lacrosse team, for example, was off to a program-best 7-0 start and ranked in the top 20 nationally for the first time since 2008."We just accelerated into the season and started off so hot," senior goaltender Megan Gianforte said. "Personally, I thought I was peaking this year. I felt I was in the best condition for this season. That's why I was so excited for it. We brought in so much talent, which helps me defensively."I'm leaving Richmond now with such unfinished business, knowing all the potential we could have had. I just know how much more we have to give."Now the spring athletes are left to wonder what they'll do with themselves."It is just heartbreaking to see these kids face this unfortunate situation," longtime University of San Francisco baseball coach Nino Giarratano said. "They are too young."Creighton sophomore Tommy Steier said he and Dotzler, his roommate, have been spending a lot of time hanging out with teammates, rehashing old stories and plotting their immediate futures.Creighton isn't allowing athletes to use the school's training facilities during the shutdown. Baseball players will work out on their own and prepare to join summer teams in a few months - if the summer leagues operate.Fort, the Coastal Carolina golfer, said a temporary sports stoppage would have been more appropriate, followed by a reassessment of the situation. "It was kind of quick and a little rash and short-sighted on the NCAA's part, especially to blanket cancel all sports."I can understand basketball. That's a spectator sport where you have a ton of people constantly rubbing shoulders. I can almost understand baseball. But sports like (men's) volleyball, softball, golf and lacrosse don't have as much of a pronounced fan base."Creighton's baseball team was busing back to Omaha from Minnesota on Thursday when the players' Twitter feeds started showing conference basketball tournaments being canceled.An hour after the players got home they received a text telling them to return to campus for a meeting. Steier and Dotzler said everyone sensed what was coming.As coach Ed Servais broke the news, seniors, who wouldn't know for another 24 hours they would be allowed to come back next year, broke into tears."It was hard to see all of them knowing they were losing what they love to do," Steier said.Gianforte, the Richmond lacrosse goalie, said she and her teammates had a feeling as early as Wednesday afternoon their season might be in jeopardy. That's when the Ivy League announced it was closing down spring sports."I think the other conferences were feeling some peer pressure," she said.Then the NBA announced Wednesday night it was suspending its season."That," Gianforte said, "is when we knew we were goners."

For these athletes, this is a spring break they don't want

Rhonda Seacrest believes in giving back to Nebraskans through programs that combat hunger, promote the arts and provide educational resources to people across the state. Her broader challenge compels her to motivate others to do likewise, which she accomplishes by planting the seed of philanthropy in College of Business students through a class project teaching them how to fund nonprofits.

“Young people today are interested in more than just going out and getting a high paying job,” said Seacrest, who provides funds for the senior-level Leading People and Projects (MNGT 411) Strive to Thrive Lincoln class project that takes students through the grant application process from beginning to end. “When students learn they could be the head of a nonprofit they start to see the personal satisfaction of helping someone else.”

Seacrest’s original inspiration for helping Nebraskans happened in the early 1970s when she took her mother and friends to a funeral in Merna, Nebraska. The wide-open prairie stretched before them.

“I’m standing out there on a February day looking at this landscape with these women burying their friend. It was so grim and bleak, and I said, ‘Why on earth did anybody stay here?’ Over the years I read about the hardships those early people faced, particularly the women facing isolation and starvation,” Seacrest said.

She explained the heroic image of pioneers passing through Nebraska does not do justice to those who stayed behind.

“The only ones I was interested in are the ones who stayed. The truth is if you came after them in a covered wagon or if you move to Nebraska today, your life is profoundly influenced by those who stayed and developed this land,” she said.

Seacrest visited with Strive to Thrive Lincoln students recently to tell them the story of the pioneers and why it is important for Nebraskans to help Nebraskans. She also gave them a better perspective for determining which nonprofits might align best with the class mission students created which defines the type of projects they wish to fund. Students manage the entire grant application process from the call for proposal to determining which organizations best merit funding, and then holding an awards ceremony where winners are announced.

“My hope is students have their consciousness raised about the great needs that exist even in Lincoln, Nebraska,” she said. “Beyond that, I hope each student becomes aware of opportunities to serve and learn the ethics and business model of the nonprofit sector. It is amazing how many different ways there are to make contributions.”

Dr. Amber Messersmith, lecturer of management, teaches the class Seacrest helps facilitate through her donations. Messersmith explained Seacrest originally got involved by watching her students make a presentation about their experiences on nonprofit site visits.

“Given Rhonda’s interest in the next generation of business leaders and improving the lives of Nebraskans, she provided funds that now allow us to offer this class every semester. We never have trouble filling this class to capacity because students are looking for something meaningful, and this experiential philanthropy course is unlike any other they’ve experienced. Their efforts are going to a greater cause. Rhonda sets a wonderful example for us in that she’s giving but she’s also giving so others can give,” said Messersmith.

Seacrest’s class visit gave students another perspective on why their work is important. Kyle Cartwright, executive director of Nebraska Cultural Endowment, facilitated the in-class interview which led into a question and answer session to help students understand her experiences working with nonprofits.

“It’s really powerful for students to not just hear of someone but really get to know the person who’s making this class possible,” said Messersmith. “It also helps to learn her motivations and I know that’s going to be contagious.”

Molly Wingert, a senior business administration major from Panama, Iowa, took part in the class and is a member of the team handling the awards ceremony preparations. &nbsp;

“We had learned about Rhonda but this helped get to know her on a personal level,” said Wingert. “To have that time with her means so much because she wants to make a lasting impact and so do we. What she provides in funding, we get to take and work on the process, just like her. Before this I never imagined working for a nonprofit, but seeing what you can do for your community I now believe I can make an impact as well.”

Seacrest, whose late husband Jim shared her passion for helping Nebraska communities, serves as president of the Lied Center advisory board, is a member of the Lincoln City Library and Mid-America Arts Alliance boards, and is on the advisory council of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and Willa Cather Foundation, as well as involvement in many other philanthropic ventures throughout her career. She recounted how the late Dr. Otis Young, former senior minister of First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, spoke about treating those in your community.

“He said, ‘It doesn’t make any difference how brilliant your children are, how beautiful your spouse is or any of the other labels on the outside. The only thing that matters is how we treat one another.’ I am very much into equal opportunity and there’s something in me that wants to equalize that opportunity for all people. When Jim and I identified a need in our community, we always thought of it in terms of how can we fund a solution to meet that need,” said Seacrest.

In addition to her work with the Strive to Thrive Lincoln students, Seacrest supports faculty at the College of Business through the Seacrest Teaching Fellows. The program cultivates exceptional teaching by identifying and recognizing instructional faculty who ignite student enthusiasm for learning and provide high-quality educational experiences.

Seacrest plants seeds of philanthropy in business students

”DHHS is working hand in hand with local health departments and the federal government to ensure that we stop the spread of this virus,” said Dr. Gary Anthone, Director of Public Health and Chief Medical Officer for DHHS. “Keeping Nebraskans safe and illness-free is our top priority. Our info line will be a crucial part of that effort by allowing us to swiftly answer questions about how the state is responding to the needs of its residents and share the latest information and resources to help keep Nebraskans informed.”

If you are concerned that you may have COVID-19, it’s important to remember to call ahead to your healthcare provider to be screened over the phone. The provider can evaluate and determine if testing is necessary. Flu activity is also still high in Nebraska. Flu tests should be considered as a first test option before considering a COVID-19 test.

The Department urges you to self-monitor and contact your health care provider (via phone or email) first to discuss if your symptoms are significant enough to warrant a trip to the medical office. Statewide COVID-19 information line opens for residents

LINCOLN, Neb. – In proactive state and national effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus and ensure the health of its customers and staff, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is temporarily closing four facilities.

From March 14 through May 31, the following facilities are closed to public walk-in access: Schramm Education Center near Gretna, the indoor Activity Center Building at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park near Ashland, Wildcat Hills Nature Center near Gering, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln. The park grounds remain open to the public.
