COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — College football players have fans across America. These athletes are lauded as role models and influencers to young and old alike. It was only recently, however, that the NCAA allowed these athletes to achieve financial gain via their own name, image, and likeness (NIL). For most, this means getting a sponsorship from large corporations for individual income. But for others, the ability to promote something other than their college or university creates opportunities to help those in need.

JoJo Domann, a standout linebacker for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, is utilizing this new opportunity not for personal profit, but to help others in need. Domann partnered with Edgewater Insurance + Real Estate to create the “Husker Heartbeat Giveback,” which is donating funds to 12 handpicked charities. One of the chosen charities is Compassion International’s unique Fill the Stadium (FtS, fillthestadium.com) initiative, which provides essential food, medical care, and support to hurting children. After Nebraska’s October 16 game against the Minnesota Golder Gophers, Domann and the “Husker Heartbeat Giveback” donated a portion of their funds to help “fill the stadium” and reach impoverished children and families around the world.

Compassion’s CEO Santiago “Jimmy” Mellado is determined to achieve Fill the Stadium’s goal of helping all 70,000 children in crisis and has so far raised $33 million for over 66,000 kids and their families—but they must still “fill the stadium” and reach all 70,000 kids at grave risk of hunger, or worse.

Domann says of the effort, “While growing up in Colorado Springs, I had heard about Compassion’s work in giving to kids in need. In 2018, while attending a concert in Omaha, I sponsored a child, and that’s when Compassion really became part of my life and I felt called in that moment.” Domann’s sponsored child through Compassion is a boy named Vincent in Togo, Africa. Domann has continued to sponsor Vincent, now ten years old, and is encouraging others to take action and help children just like him all around the world.

“We take for granted how much we have in America and how blessed we are with resources, roofs over our heads, and running water. My heart dropped when I learned how other young people live—human beings just like us who live in such a different reality. I want to do anything possible to help make their lives better—and at this point, helping with financial resources is what I can do.”

The No. 9 Nebraska volleyball team rattled off its eighth straight win Saturday night, sweeping Illinois 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) at the Devaney Center. The conference-leading Huskers are now 14-3 (8-0 Big Ten), while the Illini drop to 12-7 (4-4).

Nebraska is the first team this year to hand UI a three-set loss. The win was the Huskers' 10th at home this season.

Madi Kubik put together an outstanding offensive performance, matching her season high for the third time with 19 kills on .457 hitting to lead all players. She added six digs and a service ace. Kubik has led the Huskers in kills in eight consecutive matches.

Lindsay Krause also had seven kills with three blocks, and Lauren Stivrins had five kills while hitting .455 with two blocks.

Callie Schwarzenbach added three more stops, which moved her up to sixth for career blocks (392) at Nebraska in the rally-scoring era, past Brooke Delano's 389 from 2007-11.

Lexi Rodriguez anchored the Husker defense with a match-high 17 digs. Nicklin Hames had 32 assists and 10 more digs with a block and an ace for her team-best 10th double-double this season. Kenzie Knuckles added six digs and five assists on the night.

NU hit .267 as a team while limiting Illinois to .100. The Huskers also had the advantage in kills (42-30), assists (42-27), aces (3-1) and digs (52-37), while Illinois had the edge in blocking (9-5).

The Illini were led by seven kills apiece from Kennedy Collins and Riana Terry. Wahoo, Neb., native Kyla Swanson and Megan Cooney each had six more, and Swanson added a match-high five blocks.

Kubik posted six kills on .500 hitting out of the gate as Nebraska hit .121 as a team while keeping Illinois to .000. The Illini had five blocks in the first set, led by three apiece from Swanson and Terry.

The Huskers got out to a 9-3 lead with the help of a 5-0 run that included four kills from Kubik, who connected on four of her first five swings. NU doubled up the Illini at 12-6 on a Stivrins slide attack. The Illini came back with a 4-1 run on three blocks and a Swanson kill to cut it to 13-10, and by the media timeout, a Schwarzenbach kill had spotted NU a 15-11 lead.

After Kubik terminated again, Knuckles did so from the back row for a 17-12 Husker lead and an UI timeout. Following a pair of Illini errors and a Kubik ace, it was 20-13 by the next break. Illinois rallied with a 3-0 run on a Terry kill, a Cooney ace and a solo block by Collins, at which point NU took a timeout up 23-19. Two late Illini service errors put it away for the Huskers, 25-21.

The Huskers' first six points all came on kills spread out among Krause, Knuckles, Stivrins and Kubik. NU hit .818 (9-0-11) to start, and a 3-0 run on two Illini errors and another Kubik kill -- her 10th -- extended it to 13-6 by the first break. Kubik added three more kills for a 17-10 Husker advantage, and NU matched the seven-point margin again at 20-13 on a Hames ace before an Illini timeout. NU outscored Illinois 5-1 to close it out, with a Stivrins/Krause stop plus a pair of Krause kills capping the set, 25-15.

Area Sports: All Cross Country district results

North Platte St Pats boys and girls won the D5 Districts in Cambridge. Senior Kate Steinike led the girls had all five runners in the top 18. Freshman Braelyn Gifford was the runner up, Senior Hayley Miles finished 10th with Freshman Theran Nitsch and Sophmore Helana Pettit finishing in 17 and 18.

The boys swept the top five places and were led by Sophmore Jarrett Miles in a time of 16:46 followed Junior Dax Connick, Freshman Porter Connick, Sophmore Billy Tolstedt and Junior Andrew Brosius. The St Pats team will compete next Friday at the State Competition in Kearney. Full official results below.

NPSP Irish Cross Country both teams make state with strong district

It was a great day for the Bulldogs! Today we traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for the district meet. We were blessed with beautiful running weather and all our athletes were ready to compete. Our word of the week was “team”. The acronym we used was Together, Effort, Attitude, and Mentality. Each Bulldog showed that team mantra today and competed well for their team!&nbsp;

The girls led off the day in the girls A-2 district. The girls went into today having won 7 meets out of 8 this season. The girls competed at a high level and finished district runner-up. They were tough and battled for each other today. This is a tough course against some very good teams, and they showed that they are a good team as well. The girls were led by medalists Zarah Blaesi (2nd), Marissa Holm (3rd), and Evelyn Blaesi (11th), Jada Hothan just missed medaling finishing in 16th. I was proud of the girls, they have come so far over the last couple years! They get along well, work hard, and it was fun to see there hard work pay off.&nbsp;

The boys closed the day in the A-4 district. The boys have continued to get better each week and we’re ready to go to battle today. On paper, we were not seeded in the top 3, but we knew we had a chance if we all worked together. The boys battled amazing and finished third as a team and qualified for state for the third year in a row! This team has come so far this year. They have had some tough times along the way, but they showed grit and determination today and knocked off some big schools to earn a trip to state next week! The boys were led by district champion Evan Caudy and Rian Teets finishing 13th.&nbsp;

It was a good day to be a Bulldog and I was proud of all of their efforts today. We’ve been blessed with some great kids and they used the talents they’ve been blessed with to compete at a high level today. This is the third out of four years the girls have qualified for state as a team and the third year in a row for boys. Next Friday we will compete in Kearney at state cross country. Girls will race at 3 PM and Boys at 4 PM.&nbsp;

NPHS Cross Country: Boys and Girls make state for 2nd year in a row

Former Husker All-American and three-time Olympic medalist Jordan Larson was recognized as the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year for Team Sport Wednesday at the organization's Annual Salute event.

The WSF accolade is the most recent in a remarkable year for Larson, who was honored after captaining Team USA to its first Olympic gold medal in indoor volleyball at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Best Outside Hitter and earned a spot on the Tokyo 2020 Dream Team.

Earlier in this year, Larson also led the U.S. women's team to its third straight FIVB Volleyball Nations League title. In April, she was the champion of the inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited professional volleyball league.

Larson was officially inducted into the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020 this fall. The Hooper, Neb., native was a four-year starter from 2005-08 and led the Huskers to the 2006 NCAA championship and four straight Big 12 titles. She was a three-time All-American before beginning her outstanding international career.

NPHS Softball: Records set this year

The ninth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team made quick work of a midweek match with Indiana Wednesday night, sweeping the Hoosiers 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) at the Devaney Center. Winners of seven straight, the Huskers improved to 13-3 (7-0 Big Ten), while the Hoosiers dropped to 8-11 (2-5).

Madi Kubik continued her streak of seven consecutive matches leading Nebraska in kills, finishing with a match-high 16 kills on .308 hitting. She added five digs and three blocks.

Lindsay Krause joined her in double figures with 10 kills on .400 hitting with two blocks. Ally Batenhorst hit .714 with five kills and no attack errors, and Lauren Stivrins had five more kills with three blocks.

Callie Schwarzenbach led the match with four blocks to go with three kills.

Nicklin Hames achieved her team-leading ninth double-double on 26 assists, 13 digs, three kills, two blocks and a service ace.

Kenzie Knuckles had a team-high 14 digs with two kills and an ace, and Keonilei Akana had another 10 scoops. Lexi Rodriguez finished with nine digs and a season-high-tying nine assists with an ace.

Nebraska hit .367 -- its second-best efficiency of the season -- and held Indiana to .057. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (46-23), assists (40-21), aces (4-3), digs (58-36) and blocks (7.5-7.0).

Indiana got a team-leading six kills from Breana Edwards, while Mady Saris, Kaley Rammelsburg and Kari Zumach each had five more.

The duo of Kubik and Krause combined for 13 of Nebraska's 18 kills and together terminated at .458. Kubik was Hames' main target in the opening set, as the junior collected eight kills on .375 hitting -- one more kill than Indiana's team total. Krause added five more while swinging at a .625 clip with no errors.

Three straight kills between Krause and Kubik and a Hoosier attack error made it 5-1 early. Up 11-8, the Huskers added to their lead with a 3-0 run on an IU service error, a Kubik/Schwarzenbach block and a Schwarzenbach kill to claim a six-point advantage. Kubik added another kill at 15-9 ahead of a media timeout. Krause and Kubik then combined for four straight kills, which ratcheted up the lead to 19-10. The Huskers closed on a 6-1 run, and Stivrins' final swing put it away at 25-13.

For the set, NU hit .405 with just three attack errors and held IU to .054.

The Huskers maintained their momentum with a short 3-0 run to start the second set, thanks to a Krause/Schwarzenbach block and a Knuckles ace. Indiana locked it at 4-4 before NU rallied with three straight kills, and a ball handling error plus another kill from Hames made it 9-4. Three kills and an Anni Evans ace later brought on a 4-0 Husker run for a 14-7 advantage, and a Batenhorst kill coupled with a Hames ace prompted a Hoosier timeout at 16-9. After a 4-0 spurt spotted NU a 10-point advantage, a Stivrins/Hames stuff block brought it to set point at 24-15. A four-hit violation by IU ended it at 25-15.

NU hit .414 as a team and had three aces in the set.

Indiana held its only lead of the night after winning the opening two points, but Nebraska quickly regained control with a 6-0 run. Another 7-0 stretch punctuated with a Rodriguez ace boosted it to 13-3. NU held a lead of at least seven the rest of the way.

Leading 19-12, the Huskers put together a 5-1 run to hit set point at 24-13. After IU took the next two points, Kubik swatted her 16th and final kill to finish it off at 25-15.

NU kept Indiana to a negative attack percentage at -.049. Kubik accounted for six kills and two blocks in the set.

-Nebraska is the only remaining unbeaten team in conference play at 7-0.

-The Huskers' seven-match win streak is their longest since Nov. 1-22, 2019.

-Nebraska's sweep was its eighth of the season and its third straight in the series with Indiana.

-NU leads the all-time series with IU 20-1, including 19-0 in the John Cook era. The Huskers have triumphed in 20 straight in the series dating back to 1988.

-The Huskers have a 10-0 advantage over Indiana at home, including 7-0 at the Devaney Center.

-NU has held back-to-back opponents (Rutgers and Indiana) under .060 hitting.

-Tonight was Nebraska's fourth match of the year hitting .300 or better as a team.

Nebraska faces Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 16, with first serve at 6 p.m. from the Devaney Center. The match will be televised on Nebraska Public Media -- formerly known as NET -- and streamed on Big Ten Network+. Three Nebraska volleyball players have claimed Big Ten weekly awards, the conference office announced Monday. Madi Kubik was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, Nicklin Hames was tabbed Big Ten Setter of the Week and Lexi Rodriguez was recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Kubik averaged a team-leading 4.29 kills per set alongside 3.00 digs per set as No. 10 Nebraska picked up wins at No. 13 Penn State and Rutgers. On Friday at PSU, the junior matched her season high with 19 kills and added 12 digs, a block and an ace for her second double-double of the year. On Sunday at Rutgers, she paced the Huskers in kills for the sixth straight match, finishing with 11 kills on .280 hitting and adding nine digs, two blocks and an ace.  It marks the second Player-of-the-Week award of Kubik's career.

Hames came in at 11.29 assists, 2.86 digs and 0.86 blocks per set in last week's wins. Against the Nittany Lions, she had a season-high 49 assists with 12 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double of the year. It was her 100th career match, and she added three blocks, and an ace. Hames followed with 30 assists and added three blocks, two kills and an ace at RU. It marks the first Setter-of-the-Week accolade of her career and NU's first since Kelly Hunter on Sept. 25, 2017.

The No. 10 Nebraska volleyball team claimed its sixth straight win Sunday afternoon, cruising to a sweep of Rutgers, 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-12), at the Rutgers Athletic Center. With the victory, the conference-leading Huskers improve to 12-3 (6-0 Big Ten), while the Scarlet Knights drop to 8-9 (0-6).

Madi Kubik paced Nebraska for the sixth straight match with 11 kills on .280 hitting, adding nine digs, two blocks and an ace.

Lindsay Krause totaled nine kills on .421 hitting. Nicklin Hames finished with 30 assists, eight digs, three blocks, two kills and an ace.

Serving stole the show for the Huskers, who tied their season high with 10 service aces while surrendering just one to RU. Kenzie Knuckles led the charge at the service line with three ace serves, and Keonilei Akana and Lexi Rodriguez each added two more.

Rodriguez also anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 17 digs. Lauren Stivrins and Callie Schwarzenbach added three blocks apiece, while Stivrins chipped in six kills and Schwarzenbach had five.

Nebraska hit .255 and kept Rutgers to just .042. The Huskers came away with the advantage in kills (42-19), assists (37-17), aces (10-1), digs (54-38) and blocks (7-4).

Rutgers was led by five kills each from Kamila Cieslik and Megan Vernon.

A pair of early Krause kills got the Huskers started as they assumed a 6-2 lead. The Scarlet Knights managed to pull within two three times until an RU service error and a Knuckles ace pushed it back out to 13-9. Kubik put down a pair of kills to strengthen the lead to 16-11, at which point RU took a timeout. The Scarlet Knights went on a 5-1 run from there, and NU called for another break hanging on to a 17-16 lead.

Ally Batenhorst followed with a kill to start a 5-1 run punctuated with a Hames ace to prompt another RU timeout at 22-17. Strong serving finished it for the Huskers, with a Krause kill and back-to-back Knuckles aces putting the set away 25-19.

Knuckles had three of NU's five aces in the opening set. Kubik had four kills, and Krause and Batenhorst each had three.

NU went without an error on its first 24 swings of the second set, and Rutgers was held to -.114 hitting as a team. RU won the first point of the set on a setting miscue for their only lead of the match but the Huskers quickly settled in. They used an 11-2 spurt to force a Rutgers timeout at 13-4.

The advantage stretched to 17-5 with the help of a Hames/Schwarzenbach block, an Anni Evans ace and a Kubik kill. NU closed it by outscoring Rutgers 7-1 behind a Lauenstein kill, a Rodriguez ace and two blocks, dominating the set at 25-9.

It was a fun day in Sidney, Nebraska for our final regular season invitational of the year!&nbsp; The girls battled well today and were able to come away with the victory.&nbsp; The girls have battled adversity throughout the season.&nbsp; Through it all, they have shown what it means to be a tough&nbsp;Bulldog and won their seventh meet out of the eight meets we have had this year!&nbsp; The Junior Varsity girls also stepped up and won as well. The varsity girls were led by medalists Zarah Blaesi (1st), Marissa Holm (2nd), Evelyn Blaesi (4th), and Jada Hothan (9th). The boys finished runner-up as a team, just narrowly missing out against Sidney.&nbsp; Sidney has a great team this year!&nbsp; They are projected to win their&nbsp;respective class this year and have an amazing ball club.&nbsp; When we faced them a month&nbsp;ago, they beat us by 36 points, and we closed the gap to only losing to them by 6 points.&nbsp; The boys stepped up today and I was proud of their&nbsp;efforts to go to battle for their&nbsp;brothers.&nbsp; The junior varsity boys were able to come away with the victory today, capping off a great season for them! The&nbsp;varsity was led by medalists Evan Caudy (1st), Rian Teets (6th), Quade Lowe (7th), Gabe Jenny (10th). Due to the course being very long, the individual times were not posted.&nbsp;&nbsp; Have a good weekend!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lincoln -- Nebraska men's basketball team will make a minimum of 28 national television appearances this coming season, as the Big Ten Conference and its television partners announced their 2021-22 TV schedules on Tuesday.

In all, the Huskers will make at least 19 appearances on the Big Ten Network, four on FS1 and five on the ESPN family of networks. In addition, four regular-season games and both exhibition games will be available online at B1G+.

Nebraska will make its first TV appearance of the season when they host intrastate rival Creighton in the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. The Huskers' other FS1 appearances include both matchups with Iowa (Feb. 13 and Feb. 25) and a trip to Purdue (Jan. 14).

The Huskers will be on the Big Ten Network 19 times, including a pair of non-conference games against Tennessee State (Nov. 23) and Kansas State (Dec. 19), as well as 16 of the Huskers' 20 conference games. BTN also will televise the first three days of the Big Ten Tournament from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  CBS will televise the semifinals and finals.

The five ESPN network appearances are highlighted by a pair of ESPN2 games, as the Huskers will host Michigan (Dec. 7) and take on Auburn at Holiday Hoopsgiving Atlanta (Dec. 11). NU will also be on ESPNU for non-conference games against Southern (Nov. 21) and Kennesaw State (Dec. 22). Start times and television designations for the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge will be announced at a later date and will be carried on ESPN networks.
