NPHS Golf returns to state to defend title

Oslo, Norway – Former Husker wrestler Jordan Burroughs won his fifth World Championship, defeating Mohammad Nokhodilarimi of Iran, 5-1, in the men's freestyle 79 kg final at the World Wrestling Championships on Monday. Burroughs tied John Smith's U.S. freestyle record of six World and Olympic Championships combined.

In the 79 kg final, Burroughs took the early 3-0 lead with a double-leg takedown followed closely by another double. The victory gave Burroughs his fifth World Championship gold medal, joining his titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Burroughs faced Canada's Sam Barmish in the first match of the tournament and rolled to a 10-0 win with three double-leg takedowns. In the second round, Burroughs was set to match up against Kazakhstan's Bolat Sakayev but advanced to the next round by forfeit. In the quarterfinals, Burroughs faced Radik Valiev of the Russian Wrestling Federation. Valiev started off strong with a 3-2 lead at the break, but Burroughs rallied for a 9-4 victory to advanced to the semifinals.

On Sunday, Burroughs advanced to his fifth world championship match by dominating Japan's Ryuki Yoshida, 10-1.

At 70 kg, fellow former Husker James Green cruised to his first match victory, defeating Korea's Seungchul Lee by a 10-0 technical fall. The story in Green's second round was similar as he advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-0 technical fall over Germany's Shamil Ustaev.

In the quarterfinals, Green lost a hard-fought match to Azerbaijan's Turan Bayramov 6-5 and was eliminated from competition.

Burroughs' medal was the second gold medal of the day for the United States, as former Omaha Skutt and Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman defeated Iran's Alireza Sarlak in the 57 kg championship match.

Members of the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team finished out the fall with the three best days of competition they’ve had all season.

The athletes competed at a doubleheader at the Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Stampede Thursday through Saturday in Dickinson, N.D.

MPCC took the men’s team championship during the first rodeo, and the women’s team placed fourth.

Rex Day, of Bartlett, scored the men’s all-around title after winning the team roping and splitting second and third in the steer wrestling.

His teammate, Quade Potter, of Stockville, also earned the championship in the steer wrestling with a 4.4 second run.

Potter and Aluxyn Hollenbeck, of Valentine, placed eighth in the team roping – just behind Jentri Hurlburt, of Arcadia, and Barrett Schlieker, of Fort Lupton, Colo., who were sixth.

Schlieker tied for fourth, fifth and sixth in the steer wrestling with Dalton Kunkee, of Lexington, and Koby Jacobson, of Haiku, Hawaii, split seventh and eighth. Jacobson was also third in the bull riding.

Caitlyn Comfort, of Elwood, came in third in the breakaway roping, and Andrea Meyer, of Stapleton, was fifth in the goat tying.

During the second rodeo, Nick Rettinger, of Amidon, N.D., was eighth in the average in the tie-down roping and third in the steer wrestling.

Kunkee ranked fifth in the steer wrestling followed by Jacobson, who was ninth, and Kaden Wooters, of Elwood, who finished 10th.

Hurlburt was sixth in the breakaway average. She split second in the short go with a time of 2.4 seconds.

Makana Kaapana, of Kailua, Hawaii, won the short go bull riding jackpot, but didn’t place in the average.

“The men’s team put a great rodeo together for Dickinson State Rodeo number one,” said Wyatt Clark, MPCC timed events coach. “I’m proud of the team’s performance this fall season. Many of them have some good points built up, and we have some good opportunities to get some tickets punched for Casper in the spring.”

NPHS Softball: District A-7 Bracket

Lincoln –JoJo Domann and Adrian Martinez were both honored Monday morning for their performances in the Huskers' 56-7 win over Northwestern last Saturday.  Domann was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Martinez was one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week.

Domann, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker from Colorado Springs, Colo., put together one of the finest games of his career against Northwestern. He led the Huskers with nine tackles, including eight solo stops, while posting career highs for tackles for loss (3.0-28), sacks (2.0-19) and forced fumbles (two). His totals for sacks, TFLs, solo stops and yards lost were all single-game highs for any Husker this season

On the season, Domann has 37 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, and ranks first or second on the team in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles.  He shared the weekly honor with Michigan's David Ojabo. Domann is the second Blackshirt defender honored this season by the Big Ten, as Luke Reimer was honored following NU's win over Buffalo.

Martinez accounted for 252 yards of total offense, as the Huskers put up 56 points and over 650 yards of total offense. He completed 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying eight times for 50 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. He now has totaled at least 250 yards of total offense in seven straight games, setting a school record.

College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.

The Huskers return to action on Saturday, as they take on ninth-ranked Michigan at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC and carried on the Huskers Radio Network.

Two Husker Football Players Honored

Dodge City, Kan. - The North Platte Community College Knights split their volleyball games in Kansas Saturday.

They dropped the first match against Dodge City Community College after pushing the Conquistadors to five sets. Scores were: 20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22 and 16-18.

Morgan Ramsey, of Bartlett, led the attack with 21 kills. Her teammate, Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., recorded 19 kills and 11 digs.

Allie Schneider, of Humphrey, tallied 49 assists and five aces, and Katy Bartell, of Eustis, finished with 12 digs.

The Knights then bounced back to sweep their match against Trinidad State Junior College: 25-18, 25-18 and 25-20.

Ramsey had 14 kills in that match. Schneider contributed 29 assists and Krise and Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center, had six and five kills, respectively.

“We had a tough break in the first game against a team that is playing really well right now,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “I was pleased that we came in on the second game and won in three. We have a big week coming up and hope to continue our growth.”

The games in Dodge City kicked off another string of road games for the Knights. They are up Tuesday in Columbus, where they will take on the Central Community College Raiders at 6 p.m.

Area sports: Football results from 10/1

The No. 12 Nebraska volleyball team collected its third straight sweep in conference play Sunday afternoon, defeating Michigan State 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) at the Devaney Center. Now on a four-match win streak, the Huskers improve to 10-3 (4-0 Big Ten), while the Spartans drop to 8-5 (1-3).

Madi Kubik paced the Huskers offensively for the fourth straight match, leading all players with 10 kills alongside eight digs and two blocks. Kayla Caffey finished with a match-high four blocks in addition to six kills, and Lexi Rodriguez anchored the Huskers' defensive effort with a match-best 17 digs.

Nicklin Hames came just shy of a double-double with 31 assists, nine digs and a block.

Lindsay Krause added nine kills on .304 hitting with two blocks, and Lauren Stivrins chipped in seven kills at a .333 clip with two stops at the net. Keonilei Akana also had a double-figure dig effort with 10 scoops.

Nebraska hit .250 as a team and held Michigan State to .079. The Huskers had the edge in kills (41-30), assists (38-28), digs (60-47), service aces (4-3) and blocks (7-6).

Nebraska opened to a 5-1 lead and extended it to 8-3 on an Akana ace and a Kubik kill before MSU called for its first timeout of the afternoon. It started a 6-0 run, which put the Huskers up 11-3. Two Spartan errors and an Ally Batenhorst kill later made it 15-5 before another MSU timeout.

Back-to-back kills from Krause and Kubik boosted the NU lead to 19-9. The Spartans made a late push with a 4-0 run on two Husker errors and a Biamba Kabengele kill, drawing an NU timeout at 23-16. But an MSU attack error and a Krause/Caffey block punctuated it and gave the Huskers the set, 25-16.

The Huskers got at least two kills from four players and hit .184 behind three kills from Caffey. MSU was limited to .024 as a team.

MSU had the upper hand first before a 4-0 run gave the Huskers their first lead, 4-2. After the set stalled six times, NU came alive with a 5-0 spurt powered by a kill and a solo block from Caffey and a pair of Krause kills for a 15-10 advantage.

The Spartans chipped away to pull within two at 18-16 before kills from Kenzie Knuckles and Stivrins staved off their charge. NU outscored MSU 4-1 to close out the set at 25-19.

The third set tied eight times up to 11-11 before NU broke through with a Stivrins kill and a Stivrins/Hames block to spur a Spartan timeout. It was part of a 5-1 run punctuated with a Kubik ace for a 16-12 edge.

Four different players put down a kill as the Huskers extended it to 22-17. Kubik's 10th kill of the afternoon brought it to set point at 24-18 before Stivrins terminated for a final time to seal the set at 25-20 and the match sweep.

9.30 NPHS Volleyball home vs Aurora - LIVESTREAM

The North Platte Community College Knights volleyball team defended its home court Wednesday night by sweeping its opponent in three sets.

NPCC took down the Southeast Community College Storm with scores of: 25-20, 25-15 and 25-22.

The Storm lost some of its momentum in the second set but made it back up in the third. Most of the excitement came toward the end of the final set with NPCC ahead 24-19.

Fans were on the edge of their seats as SCC inched its way up to 22 points. Morgan Ramsey, of Bartlett, scored the final kill.

Ramsey and Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., both had 13 kills in the match. Payton Hoatson, of Sutherland, added six more kills while teammate Allie Schneider, of Humphrey, notched 33 assists. Katy Bartell contributed 14 digs.

“We knew that we needed to work hard to win in three,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “Against a Region team, every set counts, so I was happy to see us get the job done in three. I thought our outsides played really well, and Allie did a nice job of distributing the ball.”

They will hit the road this weekend for a tournament in Dodge City, Kan. The Knights play Dodge City Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday followed by Trinidad State College at 3 p.m.

A Mid-Plains Community College cowboy took the win in the team roping Saturday at the Triton Stampede in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Jacob Haren, of Erie, Colo., and his team roping partner Riley Staton, of Black Hills State University, stretched their steer in 7.2 seconds during the short go of the Iowa Central Community College hosted event.

Haren and Staton’s previous time of 8.5 seconds put them in first place in the long go. They were second in the finals and first in the average.

“A team before them was 6.6 seconds,” said MPCC timed event coach Wyatt Clark. “They had to be at least 7.2 to win the average, and they went out and were 7.2.”

Haren’s teammates, Jentri Hurlburt, of Arcadia, and&nbsp;<a>Barrett Schlieker, of Fort Lupton, Colo., also fared well in the team roping – coming in third.</a>

Schlieker placed seventh in the tie-down roping, while Dalton Kunkee, of Lexington, finished 10th.

In the steer wrestling, Quade Potter, of Stockville, was second; Koby Jacobson, of Haiku, Hawaii, was fourth; Rex Day, of Bartlett, was seventh and Kaden Wooters, of Elwood, ended up eighth.

MPCC ranked third overall in the men’s team standings and split third and fourth in the women’s team standings.

“The timed events team had some great highlights this weekend, but we had some tough stock draws and a few technical mistakes that prevented us from gaining some ground in the team standings,” Clark said. “This next weekend in Dickinson we get to see some new cattle. We get a couple days to freshen their horses up then we have two shots to put a couple team championships together.”

The Blue Hawk Stampede in Dickinson, N.D. will be a doubleheader and will be the last college rodeo of the fall for the Great Plains Region. It will be hosted by Dickinson State University Thursday through Saturday.

Huskers Sweep Past Hawkeyes, 3-0

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost says he's sick of his team finding new ways to lose and hopes his players are feeling the same way. 

The Cornhuskers lost 23-20 in overtime at Michigan State after surrendering a punt return for a touchdown and Adrian Martinez's interception in the extra period. 

The Huskers have lost 15 of 20 games decided by eight points or less under Frost. 

That includes all three losses this season. The Huskers play at home on Saturday against Northwestern.

The No. 12 Nebraska volleyball team got back on track Wednesday night, opening Big Ten play with a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) over Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Huskers improved to 7-3 (1-0 Big Ten), while the Wildcats dropped to 5-7 (0-1).

Madi Kubik powered her way to a season-best 19 kills to lead the match and added nine digs, a solo block and an ace. Lindsay Krause matched her season best with 15 kills on .500 hitting with two blocks, and Kayla Caffey had 12 kills on a .647 night while committing just one attack error.

Callie Schwarzenbach collected seven blocks alongside four kills. Keonilei Akana finished with a team-best 13 digs, which tied her career best.

Nicklin Hames guided the Husker offense to a .308 team hitting night -- its second-best performance of the year. The senior totaled a season-high 45 assists and 11 digs with two blocks, two aces and a kill for her seventh double-double of the season.

Ally Batenhorst had an impactful performance with eight kills. The pin hitters combined for 42 of the Huskers' 60 kills on the night. NU also finished with 10 blocks as a team.

Northwestern was led by 14 kills from Hanna Lesiak and another 12 from Leilani Dodson.

The Huskers hit .382 out of the gate, spurred by six kills on .455 hitting from Kubik and five more kills from Krause. NU also had three aces from the service line.

Three straight kills between Krause and Kubik created a 3-0 opening run before Northwestern tightened up the set. Breaking past an 11-11 tie, a Kubik kill put the Huskers ahead for good. A 4-0 run spurred them to a 19-14 edge, and the Wildcats never got closer than three as Nebraska took the set 25-21.

Four Huskers spread around seven kills and a solo block for an 8-1 run, which powered NU to a 10-5 advantage early on. The Huskers had nine kills on their first 16 swings to hit .500, and Northwestern took a timeout down 13-7. NU took their largest lead a point later on a Schwarzenbach solo stop.

The Wildcats answered with a 5-1 run that trimmed the Husker advantage to 15-12. They got within three twice more before back-to-back kills from Krause and Caffey extended the NU lead to five again at 20-15.

Northwestern surged with kills from four different players during a 6-2 spurt, cutting Nebraska's advantage to 22-21. But the Huskers closed down the stretch, using three straight kills from Batenhorst and Schwarzenbach to win set two, 25-21.

Northwestern hit .700 to start the third set on the back of seven kills on 10 errorless attempts, which brought the Wildcats to a 10-7 lead. The Huskers turned to Krause, who hammered a pair of kills, and she and Schwarzenbach then added a block to tie it at 10-all. Kenzie Knuckles chimed in with an ace serve to spot NU its first lead before a Wildcat timeout. A Kubik kill out of the break stretched the Husker run to 7-1, but the Wildcats managed to stall it again at 12-12 on an NU attack error and a Rousseau kill.

Northwestern broke past a 16-16 tie with a 5-1 run finally halted with a Batenhorst solo block. After the Wildcats answered, NU rattled off four straight points on two kills, a block and an ace up to 18-10. They matched the eight-point margin at 20-12 on back-to-back blocks. College Football Playoff expansion has entered the negotiation stage.

The road to a new format for deciding major college football’s national champion took a detour Wednesday when the CFP management committee — 10 conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director — was unable to come to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-football-football-2f4779959d47ae1f42e9448017348d38">consensus on the proposed 12-team format</a>.

Instead of teeing up the university presidents who have the final say for a vote next week in Chicago, members of the committee circled back on the possibility of an eight-team playoff and discussed other issues.

They are set to reconvene in Chicago, with the presidents joining via Zoom, for what CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock called an “informational” meeting.

But to get there, compromises will need to be made.<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-sports-football-college-football-sports-3eee17e65fb10dd89f00a588fdf6d626">The 12-team proposal publicly unveiled in June</a>&nbsp;is still very much in play and probably still the favorite to pass.Of course, it’s not as simple as eight or 12. How the teams are chosen makes a huge difference. Automatic bids for conference champions or nothing but at-large spots?How soon a new format could be implemented is tied directly to television rights. ESPN owns the playoff through 2025. Having multiple network partners is likely to increase the overall value, but whether that can happen before the end of the current deal is unclear.Then there is the Rose Bowl, one of the most valuable properties in sports. Think of the Rose Bowl as a winter vacation spot with a mountain view in Southern California that the Big Ten and Pac-12 are not eager to share any more than they already do.“I am concerned that if everyone brings their Christmas list to the meeting and has to have everything on their Christmas list, we’ll have an unhappy Christmas morning as we make decisions,” Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey told AP before Wednesday’s meeting.HOW MANY TEAMS?The 12-team plan was designed to increase access to the playoff, which would in turn increase the number of teams playing high-stakes games late in the season.The proposal called for a selection committee to pick the six best conference champions plus six at-large teams, regardless of conference affiliation.With 12 teams, the four top seeds would get byes, and teams 5-12 would play at home sites in mid-December, possibly as soon as the week after conference championship games.ADVERTISEMENTThat extra tier of games creates potential issues such as teams playing during finals and schools in cold-weather locations needing to spend millions of dollars to winterize stadiums —- some of which have little chance of ever hosting a playoff game. There are also health and safety concerns about players —- unpaid players —- participating in as many as 17 games in a season.Cutting down to eight helps address those issues — but which eight?Automatic bids for as many as six conferences and two at-large spots doesn’t work for the SEC, which history suggests could routinely place three or four teams per season into an open field of eight. It probably doesn’t work for Notre Dame, either.Sankey has said that any format that decreases the number of at-large bids from the current four would be difficult for the SEC to support. A format like that could conceivably leave teams ranked in the top eight — maybe even the top five —- out of the playoff for conference champions ranked much lower.However, eight CFP teams without automatic bids is a nonstarter for the so-called Group of Five conferences. The American Athletic Conference, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference, Conference USA and Sun Belt already view the CFP as stacked against them.“What’s the point of doing this if you’re going to leave out half of college football?” AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said.The whole point of going to 12 teams was to provide a solution to the access issue. So why not just stick with the plan? See above for concerns about that extra round of games, but there are other sticking points, the biggest of which could be the Rose Bowl.THE GRANDDADY OF THEM ALLThe Rose Bowl has historically been viewed as a stumbling block in the evolution of college football’s postseason. The Big Ten and then-Pac-10 didn’t even participate in the initial iteration of the Bowl Championship Series, the Bowl Alliance. The Rose Bowl, with its grand stage and valuable New Year’s Day time slot, was good enough.Over the years, the Big Ten and Pac-12 ceded some access to the Rose Bowl and even some of its revenue. At a time when conferences are furiously competing with each other and in need of every last dime to do so, the Pac-12 and Big Ten aren’t rushing to relinquish more Rose Bowl exposure and revenue.Ideally, the Rose Bowl and its partner conferences would like an expanded playoff built around a traditional Rose Bowl, matching Pac-12 and Big Ten as much as possible and kicking off on Jan. 1 at about 5 p.m. EST.Is that easier with eight rather than 12?TELEVISION’S ROLEESPN’s current 12-year contract gives it exclusive rights to the College Football Playoff through the 2025 season, no matter the current format.Is there a way to get around that exclusivity?That’s a significant question to which no one involved with the CFP has given a clear, public answer because the terms of the deal with ESPN are confidential.The strategy for the CFP could be to offer some type of extension to the current deal to ESPN, maybe allowing the network to lock in the semifinals and/or championship game for six additional years in exchange for the right to bring the new inventory —- eight more games in a 12-team format —- to other networks for bidding.Bringing an expanded CFP to market has become especially important to the conferences (Pac-12, Big Ten and Big 12) that currently partner with both Fox and ESPN. Those leagues have media rights deals of their own coming up in the next four years.Hancock said if the goal for expansion is implementation by 2024, then issues need to be hammered out in the next few months.“I think we’re just answering questions,” Thompson said. “This is a very detailed if not complicated process that’s going to take more deliberation, which we’ll do in Chicago.”
