North Platte Community College ran away with the win Tuesday night in a nail-biter of a game that left volleyball fans on the edges of their seats until the very end.

The Knights swept all three sets against Northeastern Junior College: 25-23, 25-19 and 26-24.

NPCC stayed neck and neck with the Plainswomen throughout the first set – often separated by just a point or two. The Knights pulled away toward the end of the second set and had a significant lead about halfway through set three.

It appeared an easy victory was in store for the Knights who had charged ahead by nine points, but NJC battled back – tying the match 24-24. A hit out of bounds by the Plainswomen cost them a point and ultimately lost them the game.

“I’m really proud of how the girls played tonight,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “I thought right until the very end we controlled the pace really well. We played great defense at the net and executed well on offense. I’m really pleased that we were able to win in three against a good team like NJC. This will give us good momentum going into the weekend against some good teams.”

Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., led the game for the Knights with 14 kills. Morgan Ramsey, of Bartlett, had eight kills, followed by Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center, with seven. Allie Schneider, of Humphrey, contributed 28 assists.

The Knights are now 9-5 on the season. They are also ranked 18th on the National Junior College Athletic Association’s weekly Top 20 list for Division II.

The next game for North Platte will be on the road. The Knights will travel to Overland Park, Kan. where they will take on Kansas City Kansas Community College at noon Friday then play Johnson County Community College at 2 p.m.

Knights down NJC in three sets

It was a great day for the Bulldogs in Grand Island today. After two straight meets where the weather has been 95-100 degrees, today was in the 70s and even rained off and on the whole meet. It was Bulldog weather and the Bulldogs came ready to compete.

Our girls led off the day with another strong meet. Our top five girls all finished in the top six and had the fastest team average in school history. The girls have won all five of our meets this year. This is one of the toughest group of girls I’ve ever seen and they know how to compete for their team. One of their goals this year was to have a better year than last and just go out and run their very best. It’s tough to win a meet and winning each meet going into the end of September is tough to do. The girls were led by Zarah Blaesi coming in first place, followed by Marissa Holm (2nd), Evelyn Blaesi (3rd), Nelia Rivas (4th), and Jada Hothan (6th).&nbsp;

The boys bounced back nicely from a tough past couple weeks. We’ve had some injury and sickness go throughout our boys team the past couple weeks, and this was the first time we had our top boys all back together since the beginning of the year. They were hungry and ready to compete. They lost a close battle to Grand Island by only five points. One of the things we talked about with the boys this week is closing the gap and being competitive and they did just that today. The boys runner-up finish was led by Evan Caudy (2nd), followed by Rian Teets (5th), Quade Lowe (7th), Gabe Jenny (11th), and Rayce Moerke (15th).&nbsp;

Next week we have a very tough meet as we head to UNK for the pre-state meet. It will be great to see several schools are state ranked and the top boys and girls ranked teams in the state there that day.&nbsp;

NPHS Cross Country: Girls undefeated, healthy Boys take 2nd

Last night the Paxton Tigers (6-9) played host to three other area teams in a small volleyball tournament, Wauneta-Palisade, Wallace and Potter-Dix. They took on a very good Wauneta-Palisade (8-5) team and pushed them to the limit in the championship match before Wauneta-Palisade pulled away in the third set.&nbsp;

Paxton claimed 2nd place in the tournament while Wallace comes in third and Potter-Dix in 4th.&nbsp;

Paxton beat Wallace in the first round 2-0 (25-21, 25-13). Wauneta-Palisade would top Potter-Dix 2-0 in their first-round (25-15, 25-20).

In the consolation round, Wallace beats Potter-Dix 2-0 (25-12, 25-19)

The championship went three sets with Wauneta-Palisade eventually coming out on top 2-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-19)

Some good things came out of the pandemic. The NSAA along with Coaches and Athletes all over the state agree that extending the state Track and Field championships over four days instead of three was a positive change. So much so they decided to keep the new four day schedule.&nbsp;

NSAA news: State track and field championships to stay at four days

The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team dropped its non-conference finale to fifth-ranked Louisville Saturday night, falling 3-0 (17-25, 20-25, 18-25) in front of 8,286 fans at the Devaney Center. With the loss, the Huskers are 6-3 (0-0 Big Ten) on the season, while the undefeated Cardinals improve to 10-0 (0-0 ACC).

No Husker finished with a double-digit kill tally, but Whitney Lauenstein had a team-leading nine on the night. Ally Batenhorst chipped in five more kills with three blocks, and Kalynn Meyer and Callie Schwarzenbach matched her with three blocks off the bench.

Nicklin Hames had 21 assists with six digs, two blocks and a service ace.

Louisville's Anna Stevenson totaled a match-high 11 kills on .588 hitting with six blocks. Anna DeBeer and Aiko Jones each put up 10 kills, and DeBeer posted a match-best seven blocks. Amaya Tillman also had six stops as UL outblocked NU, 12.5-7.

Tori Dilfer finished with 34 assists, guiding the Cardinals to a .255 hitting performance. Nebraska came in at a season-low .046.

Louisville hit .324 and had five blocks while holding Nebraska to .116 in the opening set. Lauenstein led NU with five kills on eight swings with no errors to hit .625, while Stevenson had five kills on seven attempts (.714) with three blocks for UL.

The Huskers never led in the set, and Louisville went up 8-4 early after a 4-0 run stopped by a Madi Kubik kill. After two UL errors and a block by Hames and Schwarzenbach, the Cardinals got a Claire Chaussee kill and two stops from Tillman and Jones to bring on a Husker timeout at 13-9. From there, NU went on a 4-1 run -- all on kills -- to pull within one. A 4-1 spurt with two kills and a solo block by Stevenson later put the Cardinals ahead 20-15. UL outscored NU 8-2 to close the set at 25-17.

Down 6-3, Meyer came off the bench to deliver a kill and two blocks with Batenhorst to pull NU within one by 7-6. A Lindsay Krause kill and a Hames/Schwarzenbach stuff block knotted the set at 9-9 before NU took its first lead of the night, 11-10, on another Krause kill and a Hames ace serve. Louisville regained the lead at 15-13 on three straight NU errors, but a service error coupled with kills from Meyer and Batenhorst put it back in NU's control at 16-15. The Cardinals rattled off five straight to go up 21-17 before Meyer halted their run on a solo block. Batenhorst added a kill, and a UL attack error prompted a timeout at 22-20, but the Cardinals ended the set on a 3-0 run.

Batenhorst had four kills in the second set, and Meyer had two kills and three blocks. Jones accounted for five kills and three blocks for Louisville.

Neither team could gain more than a two-point advantage until late in the third set. With NU trailing 10-8, Lauenstein registered back-to-back kills -- the latter her final of the night -- to lock it at 10-10. She and Kayla Caffey teamed up for a block to give NU a 11-10 edge.

UL then used a 5-2 stretch go to up 15-13 before a media timeout, and a kill by Sun and a Cardinal attack error tied it once more at 15-all. The Huskers went ahead for the last time at 17-16 on a Batenhorst/Schwarzenbach block, but Louisville – which hit .375 in the third set -- pulled away from there. Seven straight points started a 9-1 run riddled with seven Husker errors, capping it at 25-18.

-The match was a homecoming for Louisville head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, a four-year starter at Nebraska from 2003-06 who also served as a member of the Husker coaching staff from 2012-16.

-NU leads the all-time series 5-1, including 2-1 in the John Cook era.

-Tonight was the first time Nebraska has been swept at home in nearly two years. The last time was Oct. 5, 2019 vs. Wisconsin.

-The Huskers previously had not dropped three consecutive matches since a three-match skid in 2018.

Nebraska turns its attention to Big Ten play on Wednesday, Sept. 22 with a trip to Northwestern. First serve is set for 8 p.m. in Evanston, Ill., and the match will be televised on BTN and streamed on the FOX Sports app. John Baylor and Lauren Cook West will have the radio call on Huskers Radio Network.

Area Sports: Softball and Volleyball results from 9/16

Local youth will have the opportunity to brush up their dribbling and other basketball skills thanks to a Haunted Hoops camp planned for the end of October.

The North Platte Community College Knights Men’s Basketball Team will host the camp from 1-3:30 p.m. Oct. 24. The camp is open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of basketball and will also receive encouragement about academics and goal setting.

The cost is $40, which includes a Knights Haunted Hoops t-shirt, free admission to a Knights game when wearing the t-shirt and a pizza party and photos with the basketball team.

NPCC men’s basketball team to host Haunted Hoops camp

2-year and 4-year trap shooters will head down for a weekend in North Platte at the end of September for the 9th annual College Prairie Circuit Trap Shooting Event. The event welcomes athletes from 2 and 4 year colleges to compete over a weekend in various trap shooting events. The event is being held at the Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club at Lake Maloney.

In a press release from the North Platte Sports Commission:&nbsp;

This event is typically open to all 2- and 4-year colleges in Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma – the Prairie Circuit Region, with over 150 athletes in participation.

In addition to the competition, a PCC All-Conference team will be named. This will consist of the Top 10 men and Top 5 women based on HOA scores across the 5 events.

Collegiate trap shooters come to North Platte for 9th annual event

The North Platte Community College Knights volleyball team swept the Central Community College Raiders in three sets Wednesday night. The scores were: 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18.

Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., and Morgan Ramsey, of Bartlett, each had 11 kills. Allie Schneider, of Humphrey, notched 34 assists, and Katy Bartell, of Eustis, went for 14 digs.

As a team, the Knights had nine serving aces. They are now to 8-5 on the season.

“This is a great way to start our Region play,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “I thought we served really well, which helped our defense, and then we passed really well in serve receive. The kids worked hard to stay in system, and offensively, we looked good.”

The Knights will host their third home game in a row next week. Play is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 21 against Northeastern Junior College.

Area Sports: Softball and Volleyball from 9/14

The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team dropped a road decision to No. 16 Stanford Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (19-25, 25-12, 21-25, 23-25) at Maples Pavilion. The Huskers are now 6-2 (0-0 Big Ten) on the season, while the Cardinal improves to 5-2 (0-0 Pac-12).

Kayla Caffey paced Nebraska with 12 kills on .429 hitting and added a match-high seven blocks. Freshmen Ally Batenhorst and Lindsay Krause joined her in double figures with 10 kills apiece. Batenhorst narrowly missed a double-double, adding nine digs and three blocks.

Nicklin Hames achieved her sixth straight double-double on 43 assists and 11 digs with two blocks. Lexi Rodriguez (16) and Kenzie Knuckles (14) each had double-figure dig nights.

Callie Schwarzenbach chipped in nine kills on .500 hitting.

The Cardinal hit .228 as a team to Nebraska's .179. The two teams had an identical 10.5 blocks on the night.

Stanford was led by a match-high 21 kills from Caitie Baird, who had just two attack errors and hit .487. Sami Francis had 13 more kills, and Kendall Kipp had 10.

In the opening set, the Cardinal came out hitting .303 -- and kept Nebraska to .121 -- aided by six kills from Baird, who hit .600 with no errors. Stanford took an 8-3 lead early, capped by consecutive aces by Baird. The Huskers never led in the set -- and trailed by as many as eight -- but had a late 3-0 surge to stave off set point. After a solo block by Batenhorst and two Stanford attack errors cut it to 24-19, Baird's sixth kill sealed for the Cardinal at 25-19.

Nebraska flipped the switch in the second set, hitting .385 as a team with just two errors while limiting the Cardinal to .121. NU worked past a 5-5 tie, using a Caffey kill and four straight Stanford miscues go up by five. A series of short runs midway through boosted the lead, and it was all Huskers to close the set with a 5-0 run. Three kills between Hames and Krause, a Madi Kubik ace and a final Krause/Schwarzenbach block finished off the set at 25-12.

No. 6 NU Falls at No. 16 Stanford, 3-1

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s visit to third-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday is a trip down memory lane for the over-40 set of college football fans. 

It’s the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century.” That showdown between the nation’s Nos. 1 and 2 teams in Norman set the stage for classic 1970s and ’80s battles between Nebraska’s Tom Osborne and Oklahoma's Barry Switzer. 

The first meeting in 11 years really has no stakes. Not unless the Huskers pull an upset. 

They have had four straight losing seasons and are 22.5-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Nebraska sophomore linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=42877">Luke Reimer</a>&nbsp;was honored Monday morning as the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week following the Huskers' 28-3 win over Buffalo. Reimer, a 6-1, 225-pound Lincoln native, totaled a career-high 16 tackles and an interception in helping the Blackshirts hold a second straight opponent to single figures.&nbsp; His 16 tackles marked his third career double-figure tackle game and topped his previous best of 12 at Iowa last season. Reimer, whose 16 tackles was the most by a Husker since the 2015 season, also had the game's key defensive play, tipping and intercepting a Kyle Vantrease pass and returning it to the Buffalo 1-yard line to set up the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter.&nbsp; Reimer is the first Husker to earn the Big Ten's weekly defensive honor since Nate Gerry in 2016. The Huskers return to action Saturday morning, traveling to No. 3 Oklahoma for a matchup with the Sooners.
