The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team had a good start to its season in River Falls, Wisconsin over the weekend.

MPCC finished third in the men’s team standings and fifth in the women’s team standings at the University of Wisconsin’s Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo.

Mid-Plains had the only bull rider to stay on for a full eight seconds during two days of competition, Friday and Saturday. Ben Montero-Malunao, of North Las Vegas, Nev., rode his bull to a score of 74 during the short-go.

“Ben has really stepped up his game,” said MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach Aukai Kaai. “He’s putting in the work, and I’m really proud of him.”

MPCC athletes Jentri Hurlburt, of Arcadia, and Barrett Schlieker, of Fort Lupton, Colo., were second in the team roping. Jacob Haren, of Erie, Colo., and his roping partner, Riley Staton, of Black Hills State University, came in third while Rex Day, of Bartlett, and roping partner Morgan Foss, of Dickinson State University, ended up fourth.

In the steer wrestling, Koby Jacobson, of Haiku, Hawaii, finished third. Day was fifth, Kaden Wooters, of Elwood, was seventh and Nick Rettinger, of Amidon, N.D., rounded out the competition in ninth place.

Caitlyn Comfort, of Elwood, took fifth in the breakaway roping.

Haren placed fifth in the calf roping, and Dalton Kunkee, of Lexington, was 10th.

“I’m proud of our returning students for picking up where they left off last spring and proud of our freshmen for showing up to their first college rodeo and letting the region know they mean business,” said Wyatt Clark, MPCC Rodeo Team timed event coach. “Wisconsin was a great start for the team, and I’m excited to see them build off that for our home rodeo this weekend.”

Mid-Plains will host the MPCC Stampede Thursday through Saturday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.&nbsp;Performances will begin at 7 p.m. each night.

&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb. –&nbsp;Former Husker greats Jordan Burroughs and James Green secured a spot on the U.S. team and will compete at the 2021 Senior World Championships on Oct. 2-10 in Oslo, Norway after winning their divisions at the Senior World Team Trials hosted in Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; At 70 kg in the men's freestyle, Green defeated Jordan Oliver in the semifinal match 6-4 to place himself in the final best two out of three championship series against Ryan Deakin. Green beat Deakin in two-straight matches as he forced a step out with five seconds left in the second to win 4-2. The upcoming trip to Norway will mark Green's sixth Senior World Championships. Burroughs' story was similar as he defeated Jason Nolf 5-3 in the semifinals of the 79 kg freestyle division to qualify for the championship series against Alex Dieringer. Using three double legs, Burroughs took the first match 10-5. In the second, Burroughs won 4-3 to qualify for his 10th Olympic or World Team Championships combined. Those appeared on Twitter Thursday morning. The NPHS Softball squad (9-4), who just last year found themselves in the State Championship game finally broke back into the top 10 rankings in the state.&nbsp;

This season started off slow for the team which graduated 7 (yes 7!!!) seniors from last year's squad but hard work and playing "Bulldog Softball" has brought out some encouraging results.&nbsp;

Some highlights from this year include most recently beating a very good Hastings St. Cecila team 3-1, taking the #1 team in the nation (Omaha Skutt) to 9 innings, and are currently on a four-game winning streak.&nbsp;

They continue their season with two straight doubleheaders at home. First against Lincoln SE on the 9th and then against Grand Island NW on the 13th.&nbsp;

We took a few moments to chat with Women's basketball Head Coach Jeff Thurman about his team's fundraiser.&nbsp;

The Women's basketball program at North Platte Community College has experienced a renaissance of sorts earning invites to the National Tournament two of the past three years while continuing a tradition of success in the classroom.&nbsp;

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go back to the team in the form of helping cover travel expenses and new equipment and gear for the team.&nbsp;

For the second time in three seasons, the Nebraska men's basketball team will open conference play at Indiana, as the Big Ten Conference announced its 2021-22 schedule Wednesday afternoon. Nebraska's two early December games feature a pair of Big Ten heavyweights, as the Huskers will open at Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Big Ten debut for Hoosier Head Coach Mike Woodson.&nbsp; It is the fourth time since the 2014-15 season that Nebraska has opened Big Ten play with Indiana (also 2014-15, 2016-17, 2019-20). The Huskers then open the home portion of their conference schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 7, against defending Big Ten regular-season champion Michigan in the first of two meetings between the schools in 2021-22. In all, the 20-game conference slate features 14 games against teams which made the 2021 NCAA Tournament, including 10 of the Huskers' first 12 B1G tilts. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — College football teams spent the opening week of the season getting reacquainted with an unfamiliar sound: Authentic crowd noise.

The return of fans created some memorable scenes and allowed the return of some treasured traditions, including the “Jump Around” student frenzy at Wisconsin and players at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa waving to patients at a nearby children's hospital. 

Teams have to adjust to it. Competing without spectators made it easy for players and coaches to communicate with one another last year. Now it’s a little trickier.

A home court advantage wasn’t enough for the North Platte Community College volleyball team Tuesday night. The Knights fell to McCook Community College 2-3 following a nail-biter of a game.

The Knights started out strong – downing MCC 25-17 and 25-20 in the first two sets before the tides turned in favor of McCook.

MCC came back strong in the second half – besting North Platte 25-22 in the third set, 25-17 in the fourth and 15-12 in the match final.

Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., led the Knights with 15 kills and 12 digs. Her teammates, Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center, and Madi Neely, of Broken Bow, had nine and seven kills, respectively. Allie Schneider, of Humphrey, dished out 29 assists.

“We did some great things and then just let momentum get the best of us,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “Mentally, I wish we could have executed a bit better. We had some really solid blocking in the first two sets, and that helped us defensively. We just have to look at this game and grow.”

Their next match will also be at home. They take on Central Community College at 6 p.m. Sept 15. A livestream will be available at:&nbsp;<a href="https://npccknights.com/watch_live" target="_blank">npccknights.com/watch_live</a>&nbsp;for those unable to attend in person.

On Tuesday at Lake Maloney the Bulldogs showed once again why they are a force to be reckoned with. The team had a fantastic round shooting a 179 overall.&nbsp; Bulldog Abbie Jones also shot a&nbsp; personal best 36 to lead the way.&nbsp;

Nebraska volleyball senior middle blocker Kayla Caffey was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Caffey paced the Huskers with 1.56 blocks per set alongside 2.44 kills per set on .405 hitting last weekend as No. 4 Nebraska went 3-0 at the Ameritas Players Challenge. The Chicago, Ill., native earned all-tournament team recognition.

On Friday vs. Omaha, Caffey provided a spark off the bench for six kills on 10 swings with no errors and seven blocks, all in the fourth and fifth sets. That night vs. Georgia, she added nine kills on .375 hitting with five blocks. Caffey closed the tournament with seven kills and a pair of blocks vs. Arizona State on Saturday.

It marks the first weekly conference honor of Caffey's career. NU's last Defensive Player of the Week honoree was Kenzie Knuckles on Nov. 4, 2019.

Area Sports: Softball scores from 9/3-9/4

It was another nice Saturday morning to be able to get out and compete! Both teams ran strong in Cozad and battled for their teammates! We had five girls and six boys all place in the top 20, which helped lead the teams to winning the meet. Saturday was the first time our girls had beaten Kearney in over a decade. Kearney girls are always solid and it’s fun to compete against them. They are well coached and have good runners each year, so it is fun to compete against them a few times each year. The girls have ran very well these first two meets. They are great competitors and want to be better each week. It helps that we returned nearly everyone from last years state qualifying team.&nbsp;

The boys ran well also. All the boys competed well and having three boys place in the top five, definitely helped the team!&nbsp;

Next week will be a good meet as we compete against several class A schools. It’ll be a good meet to see where we stand against some different competitors!&nbsp;

NPHS Cross Country: 2x champions NPHS successful at Cozad

The North Platte Community College volleyball team split its games during the second day of a tournament in McCook Saturday.

The Knights started out with a win against Lamar Community College – beating the Lady Lopes in three sets: 25-20, 25-10 and 25-14.

North Platte then dropped a match to Midland College. The scores were: 21-25, 21-25 and 19-25.

“I thought we had some players step into some positions this weekend and do a good job,” said NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall. “We still need to work on cleaning things up to stay more consistent. We served really well this weekend and passed pretty well in serve receive. We talked about executing those two things. Now, we just have to push forward and find ways to finish sets.”

That puts the Knights at 7-4 on the season.

They will host their first home game Tuesday against McCook Community College. Action starts at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the NPCC South Campus.
