OMAHA, Neb (AP)-The opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics is six weeks away but NBC’s coverage of the upcoming Games shifts into high gear beginning this weekend. 

NBC will present 13 nights of primetime coverage of U.S. trials in four sports over the next two weeks, beginning Saturday with the diving trials. 

The network’s coverage will also include swimming, track &amp; field and gymnastics. Trials coverage remains an important part of NBC’s preparations for the games. 

Swimming and track &amp; field will get the most coverage hours with both trials lasting eight days. 

Swimming starts Sunday in Omaha, Nebraska, with track scheduled to begin on June 18 in Eugene, Oregon.

NBC's Olympics coverage shifts into higher gear with trials

USA Volleyball announced 20 players who have been named to the 2021 Women's Indoor U20 National Training Team on Thursday, and incoming Nebraska volleyball freshmen Ally Batenhorst, Lindsay Krause and Lexi Rodriguez were selected to the team. 

The U20 National Training Team will produce the 12-player roster that will compete in the 2021 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship that will be held July 9-18 in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Kortrijk, Belgium. All members of the U20 National Training Team will participate in a training camp held June 28-July 8 at UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada, before the team is selected and travels to the competition site.

Most of the U20 NTT members have graduated high school. Ten are entering their first year of college this fall, and six will begin their second. Four are currently high school seniors. Any woman born in 2002 or 2003 is eligible for the U20 NTT.

Three Huskers Named to U.S. U20 National Training Team

There was a time not so long ago, 2012 to be exact, when the big news in college football was conference commissioners simply using the word playoff when talking about the future of the sports’ postseason format.

Less than 10 years later, and eight years into College Football Playoff era, the number of teams that will have a chance to win a national title in the postseason is poised to triple.

The College Football Playoff announced Thursday it will consider expanding from four to 12 teams to settle the championship, with six spots reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions and the other six going to at-large selections.

“This proposal, at its heart, was created to provide more participation,” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, part of the group that has been working on an expansion plan, noted that only about 4% of major college football teams reach the playoff. In most other NCAA sports, more than 20% of the competing schools participate in the championship event.

The playoff’s popularity seems to have waned as only a few teams have grabbed the majority of the spots since 2014. Alabama and Clemson have each made the playoff six times in seven years. Ohio State and Oklahoma have each been selected four times. That’s 71% of the playoff spots to just four of the 130 FBS teams.

There was concern that down the stretch of the season, the pool of teams with a legitimate chance to make the four-team playoff had become too small.

“This (proposed model) creates energy in October and November. The practical effect will be that with four to five weeks to go in the season, there will be 25-30 team with a legitimate chance,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.

The CFP’s surprising announcement outlined a detailed plan, but there are still steps to be taken and time for discussion and possible tweaks.

If the format is adopted — no earlier than this fall — there was no indication in the proposal about when an expanded playoff could be in place. The soonest would seem to be for the 2023 season. Implementation could also be as far off the 2026 season.

A selection committee would still be involved, and the proposed 12-team playoff would not limit how many teams can come from any one conference. The four highest-ranked conference champions would receive first-round byes and teams 5-12 would face each other in four games played on campus sometime during the two-week period following conference championship weekend, typically early December.

Quarterfinals would be hosted by bowl games on New Year’s Day —- unless that falls on a Sunday, in which case those games will be played Jan. 2 — and an adjacent day.

The semifinals would also be hosted by bowl games, as is the case now. The plan calls for no re-seeding of the bracket as teams advance.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson cited the history of the bowls in college football and the desire to keep them “relevant.”

He also added: “All these points are going to have an opportunity to be discussed these are the recommendations of four people. There are seven other commissioners that will get to weigh in next week in Chicago.”

A 12-team field with six spots reserved for conference champions would guarantee at least one team from outside the Power Five conferences would be in the playoff each season. The Group of Five — which includes the Mountain West, American Athletic, Sun Belt, Mid-American Conference and Conference USA — has never had a team crack the field of four or been particularly close.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey said the large jump from four to 12 made it more palatable to create automatic access points for conference champions.

“That doesn’t work if you are reducing opportunities for those highly ranked,” Sankey said.

The proposal will be considered by the full CFP management committee during an in-person meeting at the Big Ten’s offices outside Chicago on June 17-18. The subcommittee comprised of Swarbrick, Bowlsby, Thompson and Sankey presented the proposal to the rest of conference commissioners in a Zoom meeting Thursday, but got no feedback.

The groups has been working on an expansion plan for two years. It might have been put forth sooner if not for the pandemic.

The proposal includes no dates for semifinals and the championship game to be played, but did indicate the semifinals would not be played as a doubleheader on a single day.

Currently six bowl games have a three-year rotation for hosting the semifinals and the championship game site is open to bidders, similar to the what the NFL does with the Super Bowl. The current semifinal bowl rotation includes the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Cotton and Peach bowls, not they are not guaranteed to be hosts in the proposed expansion plan.

“The process for selecting the six bowls that would rotate as hosts of the quarterfinals and semifinals (is) still to be determined,” the CFP plan said.

The full management committee will determine next week whether it will recommend expansion to university presidents who make up the CFP oversight committee. The presidents are scheduled to meet with the management committee in Dallas on June 22.

If the presidents sign off, the next step is determining over the summer whether the plan can be implemented and when. Final approval would likely come in September.

The CFP is entering year eight of a 12-year agreement with ESPN. The deal doesn’t lock in a format but an assumption has been that any changes would come after that deal expires following the 2025 season. Hancock has said no changes to the format could be made this season or in 2022.

The four-team playoff was implemented in 2014, a natural progression from the Bowl Championship Series, which matched No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the title game from 1998-2013.

Before the BCS, and its predecessor the Bowl Alliance, college football used bowls and polls for decades to determine a champion. There were some playoff proponents, but detractors warned it would ruin the drama and high-stakes of the regular season.

Now, college sports leaders have not only embraced the playoff, but they’re banking on a big one to enhance the regular season.

“Twelve keeps September important but also keeps November important,” Hancock said.

Post Podcast: North Platte Pickleball at NLD!!

Six distinguished student-athletes make up the 2021 University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame class, announced on Wednesday, June 9.

The class includes Therese Alshammar (women's swimming &amp; diving, 1998-99), Jordan Burroughs (wrestling, 2007-11), Bob Cerv (baseball and men's basketball, 1947-50), Kelsey Griffin (women's basketball, 2006-10), Larry Jacobson (football, 1969-71) and Cathy Noth (volleyball, 1981-84). The six members of the class came to Nebraska from five states and one foreign country.

The 2021 Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame class is an outstanding group who each accomplished historic "firsts" in their respective sports. The class will be permanently enshrined with a granite plaque with the names of the six members added to the University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame Plaza.

This year's Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 1, a day before Nebraska takes on Northwestern in the annual Homecoming Game at Memorial Stadium. In addition to the 2021 class, the 2020 class will also be inducted in October after last year's induction ceremony was postponed due to the pandemic. The 2020 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class included Amanda Burgoyne (bowling, 2004-07), Eric Crouch (football, 1997-2001), Sam Francis (football and track and field, 1935-37), Maurtice Ivy (women's basketball, 1985-88), Jordan Larson (volleyball, 2005-08) and legendary volleyball head coach Terry Pettit.

The Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame Plaza is located on a walkway, stretching from just outside of East Memorial Stadium and continuing to the historic NU Coliseum. The common theme among the six members of the 2021 Hall of Fame class is that each individual accomplished a historic "first" in his or her sport at Nebraska or made history at the international level.

Alshammar made her mark as the only woman to swim in six Olympic Games. Burroughs was Nebraska's first two-time national champion wrestler. Cerv was Nebraska baseball's first All-American and was the first Husker to play in Major League Baseball. Cerv served a three-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in World War II before beginning his Husker career. At Nebraska, he helped the Huskers win two conference titles in men's basketball and two more in baseball. The first All-American in Nebraska baseball history, Cerv was also the first Husker to play in Major League Baseball, the first to be an MLB All-Star and the first to be a World Series champion.

In 1958, Cerv hit 38 home runs with the Kansas City A's, a franchise record that stood until 2017.

Griffin elevated the Nebraska women's basketball program during her outstanding career. As a senior during the 2009-10 season, Griffin helped the Huskers to the first perfect regular season in Big 12 history (29-0). Led by Griffin, Nebraska achieved its highest ranking in school history (3rd), was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the program's first Sweet 16. Griffin was the Big 12 Player of the Year, a first-team All-American and Nebraska's first Senior CLASS Award winner in any sport.

Jacobson played a prominent role in establishing Nebraska football's winning tradition as a member of the Huskers' first two national championship teams in 1970 and 1971. Therese Alshammar came to Nebraska from Sweden and left her mark on the Husker program by capturing 13 All-America awards in her two seasons. Alshammar helped Nebraska to a Big 12 championship in her first season in 1998. She then tied a school record by earning seven All-America awards at the 1998 NCAA Championships, leading Nebraska to an 11th-place finish. In her final season in 1999, Alshammar was the Big 12 champion in the 100-meter freestyle. She went on to earn six All-America accolades at the NCAA Championships. Alshammar set four individual school records in her career and was a member of three relay teams that posted the fastest times in program history. Alshammar went on to a decorated international career, becoming the only woman to swim in six Olympic Games. She was a three-time Olympic medalist, winning silver in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where she was also a member of Sweden's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team that won the bronze medal. Jordan Burroughs is the most decorated wrestler in Nebraska history and one of the most accomplished international wrestlers of all-time. He went on to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. As a junior, Burroughs went 35-0 and was the national champion at 157 pounds, posting the first perfect season in program history. He suffered a season-ending injury in the eighth match of the 2009-10 season but returned to go 36-0 en route to the 165-pound NCAA title as a senior. He was named the 2011 Hodge Trophy winner as the nation's most outstanding wrestler, the only Husker to win the award. In his final three full seasons, Burroughs posted a 105-7 record with three conference and two national titles. Burroughs was only just beginning, as he went on to win his first 69 international matches, the longest winning streak ever by an American wrestler on the senior level. Included in his winning streak were a pair of World Championship titles and a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics. Bob Cerv, Baseball (1947-50) &amp; Men's Basketball (1947-50), Weston, Nebraska

Bob Cerv didn't begin his illustrious Nebraska career until after he served a three-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific in World War II. Following his service, he attended the University of Nebraska on a G.I. bill and was a two-sport standout as the only Husker to earn four letters in basketball and baseball. On the hardwood, Cerv helped Nebraska to back-to-back Big Seven Conference championships in 1949 and 1950. But it was on the baseball diamond where Cerv really made his mark as a four-year starter from 1947 to 1950, leading Nebraska to a pair of Big Seven titles. In 1950, Cerv hit .444 with nine homers and 36 RBIs and led the nation with an .878 slugging percentage. For his efforts, he became Nebraska's first baseball All-American. Cerv went on to a 12-year Major League Baseball career, becoming the first Husker to play in MLB. He hit .276 in his career with 105 home runs. In 1956, he became the first Husker to win a World Series title with the New York Yankees. In 1958 with the Kansas City A's, Cerv beat out Ted Williams as the American League All-Star starter in left field. He finished fourth in MVP voting that season and ranked in the top five in the American League with 93 runs, 38 homers and 104 RBIs. His 38 home runs were a Kansas City franchise record that stood until 2017. Cerv earned his degree from the University of Nebraska in education in 1951. He passed away at the age of 91 on April 6, 2017 in Blair, Nebraska.

Kelsey Griffin, Women's Basketball (2006-10), Eagle River, Alaska

Kelsey Griffin took the Nebraska women's basketball program to new heights during her career. Griffin led the Huskers to three NCAA Tournaments, including the best season in program history. The first player from Alaska in the history of Nebraska women's basketball, Griffin was named to the Big 12 Conference All-Rookie team as a freshman. She earned first-team All-Big 12 honors and led Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament each of the next two years before missing the 2008-09 season due to an injury. Griffin returned from the injury with one of the most complete seasons in program history in 2009-10. As a senior, Griffin was a first-team All-American, the Big 12 Player of the Year and a finalist for every national player-of-the-year award. She also earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team and was Nebraska's first Senior CLASS award winner in any sport. Griffin led the Huskers to their first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and only Big 12 regular-season title. Along the way, Nebraska posted the first perfect regular season in Big 12 Conference history, achieved the highest ranking in school history (No. 3) and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Griffin ended her career with a school-record 127 starts and 40 double-doubles, while ranking second in program history in rebounds (1,019) and third in points (2,033). Following her Husker career, Griffin was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, and she was named to the 2010 WNBA All-Rookie Team. After five seasons in the WNBA, Griffin went on to play in Australia's WNBL where, as of 2020, she was a three-time WNBL champion and three-time Grand Final MVP. Griffin graduated with a degree in biological sciences from the University of Nebraska in 2010. Her No. 23 jersey was retired by Nebraska in 2014.

Larry Jacobson, Football (1969-71), Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Larry Jacobson helped lay the foundation for the winning tradition of Nebraska football, as the Cornhuskers posted a 33-2-1 record in his three seasons with three conference titles and two national championships. A three-year letterwinner, Jacobson was a member of Nebraska's first two national championship teams, helping the Huskers to back-to-back titles in 1970 and 1971. He left his mark as a senior in 1971, totaling 73 tackles as a defensive lineman with several individual accomplishments that have since become synonymous with Husker football. A consensus first-team All-American, Jacobson was the first player in program history to win a major national award when he won the 1971 Outland Trophy. He was the first of Nebraska's NCAA-leading nine Outland Trophy winners. In addition to his play on the field, Jacobson was also a first-team Academic All-American as a senior, contributing to Nebraska's nation-leading total of football Academic All-Americans. Following his Husker career, Jacobson was a first-round pick in the 1972 NFL Draft, and he went on to play four years in the NFL. Jacobson graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1972, and his No. 75 jersey was retired in 1994.

Cathy Noth, Volleyball (1981-84), Bettendorff, Iowa

Cathy Noth played a prominent role in the growth and success of the Husker volleyball program, both as a player and a coach. Noth played outside hitter and setter during her four-year career, leading Nebraska to sweeps of the Big Eight Conference regular-season and tournament titles all four seasons. She was the only player in the history of the Big Eight Conference to be a three-time Big Eight Tournament MVP. Noth led Nebraska to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 1982, and the Huskers have played in every NCAA Tournament since. She was also the first Nebraska player to earn All-America accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), becoming the first of Nebraska's NCAA-leading 47 AVCA All-Americans. Noth was a first-team All-American as a junior and a second-team selection as a senior. She hit .398 her senior season, which was the highest attack percentage in Nebraska and Big Eight history at the time. The first player with 1,000 kills in program history, Noth ended her career with a then-school-record .366 hitting percentage. Noth was a first-team All-American as a junior and a second-team selection as a senior. She hit .398 her senior season, which was the highest attack percentage in Nebraska and Big Eight history at the time. The first player with 1,000 kills in program history, Noth ended her career with a then-school-record .366 hitting percentage. Following her Husker career, Noth spent four years with the U.S. National Team and was an alternate for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team. She returned to Nebraska as an assistant coach from 1988 to 1998, helping the Huskers to five NCAA Semifinals and the program's first national championship in 1995. In 1988, Noth had her No. 11 jersey retired, becoming the first Nebraska female student-athlete to have her jersey retired. Noth graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1990 with a degree in education.

Six Selected for Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning was elected to the Broncos&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1402677881105420300?s=20">Ring of Fame&nbsp;</a>on Wednesday in recognition of his record-breaking four-year run in Denver that culminated with a victory in Super Bowl 50.

Manning will be honored during a game against Washington at Empower Field at Mile High on Halloween, less than three months after his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 8.

The six-member selection committee&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1402705304463187971?s=20">unanimously</a>&nbsp;selected Manning as the 35th member of the team’s Ring of Fame. Last year’s honoree, former coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2a17084c7190022d8802e9461ba5fd88">Mike Shanahan</a>, also will be honored this season after the pandemic prevented his ceremony in 2020.

Manning joins Champ Bailey (2019) as the only Broncos selected to the team’s Ring of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the same season.

Manning's four seasons in Denver from 2012-15 “were marked by record-setting individual success and exceptional leadership that helped the Broncos to multiple Super Bowls and one of the winningest periods in team history,” team CEO and President Joe Ellis said.

Manning joined the Broncos as a free agent on March 20, 2012, after his release from the Colts following a 14-year run in Indianapolis that included a win in Super Bowl 41.

At the time, his future in football was cloudy because he was coming off multiple neck fusion surgeries that left him with numbness in his throwing hand and he had missed the entire 2011 season.

He replaced Tim Tebow and took over a Broncos team that had gone 8-8 the year before his arrival and led them to two Super Bowls and one championship over the next four seasons.

Along the way, Manning won Comeback Player of the Year, his record fifth MVP award, two AP First-Team All-Pro honors and three Pro Bowl honors.

The Broncos lost Super Bowl 48 to Seattle but returned two years later and beat Carolina for the franchise's third Super Bowl title.

“He just kind of created this sense of energy for everybody — not just the offense or the defense but even the janitors and coaches,” said linebacker Von Miller, the Super Bowl 50 MVP. “The coaches started coaching different, the janitors, the cooks, they all had this sort of spark, and it was the Peyton Manning Effect."

A month after Denver's 24-10 win over the Panthers in Super Bowl 50, Manning retired a champion just as his boss, John Elway, had done following his second straight Super Bowl title in 1999.

“When Peyton arrived in 2012, his impact and standard was felt throughout our team, the entire organization and in the community," Ellis said. “Coming back from a serious injury — with a new team in a new city — to not only win MVP but to have one of the greatest single seasons ever by any player was a remarkable feat.”

Manning is the fifth QB elected to the team's Ring of Fame, joining Elway, Craig Morton, Charley Johnson and Frank Tripucka.

Manning was inducted into the Colts’ Ring of Honor in 2017, the same year he was a College Football Hall of Fame inductee for his success at Tennessee before Indianapolis made him the top overall draft pick in 1998.

Lincoln – Nebraska's Spencer Schwellenbach was named one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday afternoon, announced by USA Baseball.

Schwellenbach is the first Husker to be named a semifinalist for the award since Scott Schreiber in 2018. Alex Gordon is the program's lone recipient of the award, winning it in 2005. Johnny Dorn was also a semifinalist in 2008, while Ken Harvey (1999) and Darin Erstad (1995) were finalists for the award.

Twenty-two different universities were represented by the 2021 semifinalists, and the list includes 12 athletes, including Schwellenbach, who played their way into consideration since the midseason list was announced on April 14. The winner of the 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be announced in July.

Named the 2021 Big Ten Player of the Year, Schwellenbach took the mound for the first time in 2021 and was been one of the top two-way players in the country. A contributor in all three facets of the game, Schwellenbach was Nebraska's No. 3 hitter all season, started every game at shortstop and has served as the team's closer.

Offensively, Schwellenbach ranked in the top 10 in the Big Ten in runs, RBIs and walks, while in the field he committed just four errors in 186 chances.

The Saginaw, Mich., native took the mound for the first time during his Husker career this season and was electric, leading the Big Ten with 10 saves. Following a season-high 4.2-inning outing in a win over #1 Arkansas at the Fayetteville Regional, he dropped his blistering ERA to 0.57 in 31.2 innings over 18 appearances. He struck out 34 and allowed just two runs.

Beginning with the announcement of the semifinalists, a ballot will be sent to a voting body consisting of baseball media members, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and the previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 200 voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. On June 24, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2021. Beginning with the semifinalist announcement and continuing through the finalist round voting deadline on Tuesday, June 15, fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player on GoldenSpikesAward.com.

The Irish added another trophy to their collection this past year with a Class D boys golf state championship. The accolades from that team are still rolling in.&nbsp; The Nebraska coaches association put out its list for All-State golfers and on it for class D were a pair of North Platte St. Pats Irish boys: Connor Hasenauer and Teegan Sonneman.&nbsp; Hasenauer came in 2nd place individually at the state tournament while Sonneman came right after him in 3rd.&nbsp;

Pair of Irish boys make All-State golf team

Three former Nebraska volleyball standouts have been named to the U.S. Women's Volleyball National Team that will represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in July,&nbsp;pending approval from the United States Olympic &amp; Paralympic Committee. Head Coach Karch Kiraly named former Huskers Jordan Larson, Kelsey Robinson and Justine Wong-Orantes to the 12-player roster. Nebraska is the most represented university with three former players on the squad. The team includes four Olympic veterans and eight newcomers. Making their third Olympic appearances will be two-time medalists Larson at outside hitter and Foluke Akinradewo Gunderson at middle blocker. Both won silver in London in 2012 and bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Making their second Olympic appearances will be outside hitters Kim Hill and Robinson, who both won bronze medals in Rio. The Olympic newcomers on the roster are outside hitter Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, opposites Annie Drews and Jordan Thompson, setters Micha Hancock and Jordyn Poulter, middles Chiaka Ogbogu and Haleigh Washington and the libero, Justine Wong Orantes. The six Olympic alternates are setter Lauren Carlini, outside hitters Kathryn Plummer and Sarah Wilhite Parsons, middle blockers Tori Dixon and Hannah Tapp and libero Megan Courtney. Three Former Huskers Named to U.S. Olympic Volleyball Team

Fayetteville, Ark. – No. 19 Nebraska pushed top-ranked Arkansas to the brink, but the Razorbacks used a two-out, eighth-inning rally to break open a 2-2 deadlock and punched their ticket to the Super Regional with a 6-2 victory Monday evening at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Nebraska, which reached the regional final round for the first time since 2007, jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Arkansas closer Kevin Kopps slammed the door with seven shutout innings of relief to improve to 12-0 on the season.

With the loss, the Huskers end their season with a 34-14 record after nearly becoming the fourth team since 1999 to knock off the No. 1 national seed in regional play. Arkansas improved to 49-11 and will host NC State in a Super Regional this weekend.

Luke Roskam belted his 10th homer of the year, while Jaxon Hallmark drove in the Huskers' other run, as Nebraska was limited to four hits.

Kopps, who went 2-0 with a save in the regional, fanned eight over a career-high 7.0 innings of work, kept the hosts in the game until Arkansas rallied in the later innings. Kopps, who entered the game in a two-on, no-out situation in the third, allowed one inherited runner to score before getting stronger as the game progressed, retiring 13 of the final 14 Huskers he faced.

Arkansas finally broke through in the eighth with two outs against the Husker bullpen. Three straight walks by Koty Frank (3-1) loaded the bases before Jake Bunz uncorked a wild pitch to allow Christian Franklin to score the go-ahead run. Pinch hitter Charlie Welch then gave Arkansas breathing room with a three-run homer to make it 6-2.  

Early on, it looked to be the Huskers' night, as the Huskers pushed across runs in the second and the third and got a strong bounce back performance from Cade Povich, who took a shutout into the fifth. The left-hander, who threw 64 pitches over a 3.1-inning start against Northeastern on Friday, allowed one run on three hits over 4.1 innings. The first-team All-Big Ten pitcher struck out six and walked two over a 65-pitch effort.

The Huskers touched up Arkansas starter Jaxon Wiggins, who lasted just 2.0 innings. Roskam led off the second with a monster home run to right field that gave NU a 1-0 lead, as the senior sent a 3-1 offering over the wall in right.
