The NSAA has finished its investigation into an incident that involved a racial slur directed at the Omaha Northwest girls basketball team from a Norfolk spectator on Feb. 11.&nbsp;

In their findings, the NSAA decided to put the entire Norfolk school system under probation meaning if they receive another formal complaint before the end of the school year further disciplinary action will be taken.&nbsp;

In a unanimous vote, the Norfolk Board of Education voted to not appeal the NSAA decision and is moving forward with a number of changes to its policies in order to address the probation.&nbsp;

A formal apology letter from students, staff and administration was published as part of the probation:&nbsp;

“Please accept this apology on behalf of the Norfolk Panthers for the experience you had in our school on 2/12/2021. No person should ever be subjected to racism or derogatory comments. We are deeply sorry you had this experience as a guest in our school. We do not want these inappropriate actions to represent our school or community. It is not who we strive to be.

“We know an apology is not enough to take away your hurt, but we hope that it can be a first step in healing our relationship with Omaha Northwest High School. We wish you the best in district competition and look forward to sharing the court with you in a more positive manner in the future.”

Area Basketball: Boys District finals are set

LINCOLN, Neb. - This weekend's Nebraska at Wisconsin volleyball series has been postponed. The decision to postpone was mutually agreed upon by the two schools out of an abundance of caution surrounding the health and safety of the participants, and the institutions will work with the Big Ten Conference to identify rescheduling options. The events have been postponed due to health and safety concerns related to COVID-19. 

"We are obviously disappointed that we won't get to compete at Wisconsin this weekend, but our players understand that the health and safety of everyone is most important," Nebraska head coach John Cook said. 

Nebraska is scheduled to play next at Illinois on Friday, March 5 at 8 p.m. (CT).

North Platte, Neb. – North Platte Community College women’s basketball team held off the Runnin’ Lopes of Lamar Community College to earn their third victory of the season on Wednesday night, 72-66.

“Our student-athletes showed a lot of heart and perseverance tonight,” said head coach Jeff Thurman. “We knew Lamar was not going to quit but we made the necessary plays and free throws down the stretch to earn the win.”

Knights trailed in the early minutes of the contest 10-6, before an offensive rebound and put back by Jordyn Moon sparked a 10-0 run. During that run, the Knights went 3-of-4 from the free throw line and captured their first lead of the game.

In the closing seconds, the Knights expanded their lead to six as Janay Brauer connected on a straight away three to close out the quarter, 19-13.

In the second quarter, the Knights began to heat up from the outside as Brauer and Amber Wolever knocked down their shots from the perimeter on three straight possessions to expand the Knights lead to twelve, 29-17.

The Runnin’ Lopes went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to six as the clock moved inside four minutes, 29-23. Knights halted the momentum shift and closed the quarter on a 11-2 run to take the advantage at the break, 40-25.

The Knights kept their third quarter lead at double digits as the teams traded buckets throughout the quarter. Kayla Pope pushed the Knights lead to sixteen by connecting on 1-of-2 free throws with 7:11 remaining in the quarter, 43-27.

Runnin’ Lopes made a charge midway through the third quarter, cutting the deficit to twelve with 2:12 to play, 48-36. Brauer responded making a highlight play with just over a minute remaining in the quarter by driving baseline and completing a reverse layup that brought the student section to their feet, as the Knights closed out the quarter with the fourteen-point advantage, 50-36.

In the fourth quarter, the Runnin’ Lopes made a late charge at the deficit cutting the Knights lead to six inside two minutes to play, 62-56. The Knights closed out the game by going a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the closing minutes to seal the 72-66 victory.

Knights finished the evening shooting 23-of-51 (45.1 percent) from the floor, 7-of-14 (50.0 percent) from behind the arc and 19-of-29 (65.5 percent) from the free throw line.

The Knights had four players in double digits including Pope (15), Brauer (15), Diamond Moore-Heath (14), and Moon (11). Jada Ballard, Pope and Brauer each collected six rebounds to lead the Knights on the glass.

The Knights (3-6) will hit the road this weekend for a pair of Region IX games. North Platte Community College opens the weekend against Trinidad State Junior College on Friday, February 26. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Scott Gym in Trinidad, Colo.

Huskers Fall Down Stretch at Minnesota

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a career filled with remarkable comebacks, Tiger Woods faces perhaps his toughest recovery of all.

The golf star was driving alone on a sweeping, downhill stretch of road through coastal Los Angeles suburbs when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. The crash caused “significant” injuries to Woods’ right leg, and he underwent what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer, said Woods shattered bones in his lower leg in multiple places. Some of his fractures went through the skin and were stabilized by a rod, while screws and pins were used for his ankle and foot injuries.

A statement on Woods’&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TigerWoods/status/1364447580520738820" target="_blank">Twitter account</a>&nbsp;said he was awake and recovering.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was the first to arrive after a neighbor called 911.

Police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday on a Facebook livestream that it was “purely an accident” on a downhill section of road known for crashes.

Dr. Joseph Patterson, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, said injuries like Woods’ are among the most common seen in emergency rooms.

Patterson didn’t treat Woods and wouldn’t comment specifically about the golfer’s injuries but said the risk of infection is extremely high for patients with fractures that break the skin.

“Tissue can be exposed to bacteria, dirt and clothing. The outcomes can be a lot worse if that tissue gets infected,” Patterson said. Such open fractures can require multiple surgeries to repair.

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith suffered an open fracture to his lower leg while being tackled. He nearly lost the leg due to infection but made a remarkable recovery and played last season.

The crash was the latest setback for Woods, who at times has looked unstoppable with his 15 major championships and record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.

He won the 2008 U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures in his left leg. His personal life imploded on Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when he was caught having multiple extramarital affairs and crashed his vehicle near his Florida home. He returned to win his 11th award as PGA Tour player of the year and reach No. 1.

And then after four back surgeries that kept him out of golf for the better part of two years, he won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time, a victory that ranks among the great comebacks in the sport.

Now it’s no longer a matter of when he plays again — the Masters is seven weeks away — but if he plays again.

The proposed legislation introduced Wednesday by Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., also would require the wealthiest athletic programs to increase spending on long-term medical care for athletes.

“The Amateur Athletes Protection and Compensation Act would create a national standard of guidelines to make certain student athletes can benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness without hurting their eligibility to compete as a student athlete,” Moran said in a statement.

The bill is the fourth to emerge from the Senate since December and second from a Republican. Most recently, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., introduced a bill narrowly focused on giving college athletes the right to earn money off their names, images and likenesses.

In December, Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced the College Athlete Bill of Rights, a sweeping proposal that could undercut the NCAA’s ability to govern college sports if passed.

That came after Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, R-Miss., announced he was sponsoring a bill that opened the door for athletes to be compensated for endorsement and sponsorship deals but largely protected the NCAA’s ability to set its own rules.

Moran’s bill lands somewhere in between the College Athlete Bill of Rights and Wicker’s: broader in scope than the Republican’s, but not potentially disruptive to the status quo in college athletics as the Democrats’.

It would create an independent body to oversee NIL regulations and permit athletes to have agents and give athletes a lifetime undergraduate scholarship.

Moran’s proposal would also make it possible for athletes to enter professional drafts and not lose their college eligibility — as is currently the case — and push schools to cover medical expenses athletes incur after their college careers because of injuries suffered during college competition.

The NCAA was expected to pass new NIL rules in January, but that was put on hold after scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The NCAA is looking for help from Congress in the form of a federal NIL law that would usurp myriad potential state laws working their way through legislatures around the country. Florida’s NIL law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1.

The North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team stomped the McCook Community College Indians in four sets Tuesday night: 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-18.

That puts the Knights at 8-9 on the season.

Taylor Hansen, of Yuma, Colo., led the game with 18 kills. Right behind her was Peyton Negley, of North Platte, with 17 kills and Alysen Daniels, of Mullen, with 11.

Ruby Valle, of Weldona, Colo., added 21 digs, and Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center, had six blocks.

“I really liked how we executed tonight,” said NPCC head volleyball coach Alexa McCall. “I thought we played aggressive and controlled the ball on our side. I think as a team we played well and worked together for the win.”

The games the Knights were to play Saturday against Johnson County Community College and Highland Community College in Highland, Kan. have been postponed.

Their next game will be against Central Community College at 6 p.m. March 2 in Columbus.

A KABC-TV helicopter over the wreck showed a car on its side, with its front end heavily damaged just off the side of a road near a hillside. The air bags appeared to be deployed.

There was a second crash when a vehicle that had apparently stopped to help Woods got hit, said Christopher Thomas, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That wreck was very minor, and no one was hurt.

Woods’ crash occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m. about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of the upscale communities of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, officials said.

Weekend games for Knights volleyball postponed

LINCOLN, Neb. - The fourth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team bounced back from its first loss of the season to hand No. 5 Minnesota its first loss of the season in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 sweep on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. 

The Huskers (7-1) rebounded from Friday's 3-1 loss by hitting .300 on Sunday and holding Minnesota to a .153 hitting percentage. Nebraska (7-1) posted its first win over an AVCA top-five ranked team since the 2018 NCAA Semifinal win over No. 3 Illinois. It was the first sweep by the Huskers over a top-five team since Sept. 29, 2017 against No. 3 Minnesota. 

After being blocked 20 times by the Golden Gophers on Friday, the Huskers were blocked just five times on Sunday. The Huskers had 43 kills with a season-low 10 attacking errors. Lexi Sun led the way with 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs, and she hit .321 for the match. Madi Kubik had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Lauren Stivrins had eight kills on .400 hitting. Kayla Caffey played her best match as a Husker with seven kills and seven blocks while hitting .455.

The Huskers, who didn't trail in sets oen and two, were aced six times on Friday night but yielded no aces to the Golden Gophers (9-1) in Sunday's rematch. Meanwhile NU had four aces of its own, including two by Keonilei Akana. Kenzie Knuckles had an ace and posted 10 digs. 

Nicklin Hames had 33 assists and eight digs and dropped a pair of kills. Riley Zuhn had four kills and four blocks. 

Taylor Landfair had 14 kills to lead Minnesota. 

Set 1: Sun connected for three kills on her first four attacks to spark NU to a 5-1 lead. Kills by Kubik, Caffey and Zuhn, followed by a block by Sun and Caffey made it 9-2 Huskers after a 4-0 run. Minnesota got within 16-12 but committed a service error, and Kubik terminated again before a Caffey/Zuhn block made it 19-12 Huskers. Nebraska continued its strong play with kills by Stivrins and Sun that helped the lead grow to nine at 23-14, and the Huskers took the set 25-17. NU hit .333 and held Minnesota to .147 in set one. 

Set 2: After being haunted by slow starts in Friday night's match, the Huskers came out on fire in the first two sets on Sunday, this time taking a 9-4 lead courtesy of a pair of blocks by Caffey and Zuhn and two kills by Caffey. An ace by Akana and kills by Stivrins and Sun made it 12-6 Huskers. Stephanie Samedy helped swing the Gophers within two at 14-12, but Kubik sided out for the Huskers, and Caffey and Zuhn teamed up for another block before an ace by Sun made it 18-13 Huskers. The lead went to six at 21-15 after another ace by Akana, and Stivrins, Kubik and Hames tallied kills as the Huskers pulled away to a 25-15 win. The Huskers hit .433 in the second set, while Minnesota hit .118. To that point in the match NU was out-hitting the Gophers .379 to .132 and had been blocked just one time.

Set 3: Minnesota took its first lead of the match at 7-6, but a Gopher service error followed by an ace by Knuckles put the Huskers back up 8-7. However two kills and a block by Minnesota put the Gophers back on top 10-8. Nebraska answered with a 4-1 run to regain a 13-12 lead, and the Huskers led 15-14 at the media timeout after Caffey's seventh block, this one with Sun. With the score tied 17-17, Kubik blasted a kill and Minnesota hit out two times in a row to put NU up 20-17. But the Gophers came out of a timeout and posted a pair of kills and a block to tie the score at 20-20. After a Husker timeout, Kubik terminated for sideout and the Huskers won a challenge to make it 22-21 Big Red. Hames connected with Stivrins for a 23-22 Husker lead, and Sun gave NU match point at 24-22. NU finished the sweep with Anni Evans setting Sun for the match-winning kill.

Huskers Storm Past No. 5 Minnesota in Sweep

North Platte, Neb. – North Platte Community College men's basketball team suffered its sixth loss of the season at the hands of Southeast Community College on Saturday afternoon, 92-81.

Saturday's game saw three ties and five lead changes as the Knights and Storm battled back-and-forth in the opening five minutes of the first half. Tied 10-10, a Storm 6-0 run gave the road team the 16-10 advantage and a little momentum with 12:03 to play in the first half. The Knights hit the reset button and made a charge to regain the lead, as a Jevarrick Butler connected on a corner three to give the lead back to the Knights, 17-16.

Knights and Storm continued to trade baskets and the lead for the next ten minutes, before a late run by the Knights gave them the lead. Trailing 35-36, German Plotnikov connected on a pair of free throws which provided a spark for the Knights and propelled them to outscore the Storm 10-5 for the advantage at the break, 45-41.

In the second half, the Storm quickly made a charge at the deficit in the opening minutes. Leading 53-52 the Knights momentum began to switch as the Storm went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead with 13:07 to play.

The Storm quickly pushed their lead to double digits over the next five minutes, leading the Knights 70-60 with 8:13 to play. The Southeast lead climbed to fifteen inside two minutes before Steven Garcia hit two three-point shots on back-to-back offensive possessions.

The visiting Storm added one final bucket in the closing seconds to take the victory over the Knights, 92-81.

Plotnikov led the Knights in scoring totaling 22 points in thirty-six minutes of action. Trevon Dennis led the Knights on the glass with seven rebounds to go along with his 14 points.

The Knights (2-6, 1-1 NCCAC) will hit the road next weekend to take on Trinidad State Junior College on Friday, February 26. Tip is set for 8:00 p.m. at the Scott Gym in Trinidad, Colo.
