The Huskers and Fighting Illini still plan to open the 2021 season on Aug. 28, but now the game will be played in Champaign at Illinois' Memorial Stadium.

"We are disappointed that we will not be able to travel to Ireland to open the 2021 football season in Dublin," Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said. "The trip would have been a memorable experience for the young men in our football program, so I feel badly they won't have this opportunity.

"There was also a high level of excitement and interest in the game among our great fan base, and I know many of them were looking forward to making the trip to cheer on the Huskers. Anthony Travel and Irish American Events have been a great partner throughout this process, and we will continue to explore the possibility of taking Nebraska Football to Dublin in the future."

2021 Husker Season Opener to Move from Ireland to Illinois

The Nebraska men's basketball team battled for 40 minutes Wednesday night at Maryland, but the Huskers' late comeback attempt fell short in a 79-71 loss to the Terrapins.

Nebraska, playing its third road game in four days, trailed by only three early in the second half, before Maryland used a 13-0 run to pull away. The Huskers then fell behind by many as 21 but made it close down the stretch before falling by eight.

Teddy Allen led the Huskers with 25 points, one shy of his career high. Allen was 8-of-12 from the field – including 4-of-6 from the 3-point line – while making all five of his free-throw attempts. He scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, including a personal 11-0 run that pulled Nebraska to within 10 with two minutes to play. Lat Mayen added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Huskers, while Dalano Banton chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Eric Ayala (career-high 24 points) and Aaron Wiggins (22) combined for 46 points as Maryland (13-10, 7-9 Big Ten) picked up its second win in as many nights over Nebraska (5-14, 1-11 Big Ten).

Neither team led by more than two in the early going until Mayen went on a personal 6-0 run to give the Huskers a 13-9 lead five minutes into the game. Nebraska continued to lead until Maryland took advantage of a lengthy Husker field goal drought.

The Huskers went more than five minutes without a basket, getting only a pair of free throws during a 10-2 run that put the Terrapins on top 25-20 with seven minutes left in the first half. Maryland then had its own five-minute drought without a basket, but Nebraska only outscored the Terrapins by four during that stretch.

Nebraska trailed 25-24 when Maryland ended its drought with back-to-back 3-pointers to take a seven-point lead. Allen and Mayen answered with 3-pointers of their own on Nebraska's next two possessions, but Maryland also scored on its two possessions as the Huskers were only able to cut the lead to 35-30.

Allen then hit another 3-pointer to pull NU within two before Maryland scored the final five points of the half to take a 40-33 lead into the locker room. Allen, who didn't score his first point until the 6:58 mark, had 10 first-half points while Mayen added 11. The Huskers shot just 38 percent in the half, but were 6-of-14 from beyond the arc. Maryland hit eight threes, turned the ball over only twice and shot 48 percent in the opening period.

Maryland scored the opening basket of the second half to take a nine-point lead before Banton knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers. With its advantage cut to three, Maryland scored the next 13 points to take a 55-39 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

The Huskers pulled to within 11 with less than 10 minutes to play, but again Maryland had an answer, using a quick 6-0 spurt to push the lead right back to 16. The Terrapins built their first 20-point lead at 72-52.

But Nebraska would not go away. Allen scored 11 straight points to cut the lead to 10 and Nebraska got it down to single digits with under a minute to play but could not complete the comeback.

After playing three road games in only four days, Nebraska will return home on Saturday to host Purdue at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with television coverage by the Big Ten Network and radio coverage from the Husker Sports Network.

North Platte Community College men’s basketball fell on the road to the Plainsman of Northeastern Junior College on Tuesday night, 75-62.

In the first half, the Knights found themselves down early as the Plainsman jumped out to an 11-4 advantage in the opening minutes of action. Knights fought back, taking their first lead of the game on a Trevon Dennis three point shot with just over twelve minutes remaining in the half, 14-13.

The Plainsman quickly swung the momentum in their favor regaining the lead on their next possession and pushing the deficit to eight with 8:25 to play. The Knights attempted another run at the Plainsman lead, but Northeastern answered and took a nine-point lead into the break, 39-30.

In the second half, the Knights made a charge at the Plainsman lead cutting the deficit to one with 11:30 to play, 53-52. Northeastern never relinquished their lead and closed the final four minutes of the game on a 12-3 run to defeat the Knights, 75-62.

Dennis led the Knights with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Timur Krupalija rounded out the Knights double-digit scorers with 16 points to go along with his eight rebounds.

Knights fall to 2-4 on the year and will return home this weekend to host Lamar Community College on Friday, February 19. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Knights fall to Plainsman on the road

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Norfolk public schools officials will meet Thursday with the head of the Nebraska School Activities Association after members of an Omaha girls basketball team reported being subjected to racial slurs.

The Omaha Northwest team reported earlier this week that they heard the slurs while leaving the floor after Friday's game.

NSAA executive director Jay Bellar said he will meet with Norfolk school officials Thursday. The association discussed the situation in executive session on Wednesday.

Norfolk officials are investigating the incident but have been hampered because schools have been out this week because of cold weather and rolling electrical blackouts, The Lincoln Journal-Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/sports/high-school/basketball/girls/nsaa-to-meet-with-norfolk-school-officials-following-reports-of-racial-slurs-at-recent-game/article_89e9b7f0-fb89-51c8-8360-1291db938383.html#tncms-source=login" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Norfolk Public Schools released a statement to the Norfolk Daily News Monday apologizing for any inappropriate comments or actions that may have occurred.

Bellar told the NSAA board Tuesday that some Norfolk cheerleaders who heard the slurs apologized to the Northwest team.

Cozad names Dueland as new head football coach

The Nebraska men's basketball team had 13 steals and forced 17 turnovers at Maryland Tuesday night, but the strong defensive effort was not enough to overcome a cold-shooting night in a 64-50 loss to the Terrapins.

Nebraska's 13 steals were its most in Big Ten play and its second-highest total this season. NU forced Maryland into a season-high 17 turnovers – six above its season average – but Nebraska scored only four points off those turnovers.

While the defensive effort was strong, Nebraska struggled with its shooting. The Huskers shot just 33 percent in the game, including only 29 percent in the second half, when Nebraska made just 2-of-14 3-pointers.

Despite the poor shooting, Nebraska (5-13 overall, 1-10 Big Ten) managed to tie the game on a Kobe Webster 3-pointer with eight minutes to play, before Maryland (12-10, 6-9) responded with a 15-3 run to pull away.

Aaron Wiggins had 10 points during the decisive run, and he finished with a game-high 21 points, including 15 in the second half. He posted a double-double by grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Jairus Hamilton added 15 points for the Terrapins, while Eric Ayala chipped in 14 points.

For the second year in a row hard work has paid off for the Lady Bulldogs.&nbsp; With a 14-6 record, NPHS has enough power points to once again host a district basketball game. They will start by hosting the #4&nbsp; Omaha Northwest Huskies (5-13) on Feb 23rd. If the Bulldogs win they will host the winner of #3 Belluevue East (10-10) and #2 Millard North (12-8).

NPHS Wrestling: Send off info

Lincoln - Husker freshman Ruby Porter scored a career-high 19 points while fellow Australian Isabelle Bourne pitched in a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but No. 9 Maryland ran to a 95-73 women's basketball win over Nebraska on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Nebraska slipped to 9-9 overall and 7-8 in the Big Ten, while the Terrapins maintained their grip on the top spot in the conference by improving to 14-2 overall and 10-1 in the league. Sophomore Ashley Owusu led four Terps in double figures with 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while fellow sophomore Diamond Miller contributed 24 points. Mimi Collins added 19 points and seven boards, while Chloe Bibby pitched in 16 points and seven boards.

Porter, who joined the starting lineup for the sixth time this season, hit 8-of-14 shots from the field including 3-of-7 three-pointers in her best performance of the season. The 5-10 guard from Adelaide, Australia knocked down a three-pointer early in the third quarter to spark a 10-0 Husker run that trimmed a 51-33 halftime lead by the Terps to just 56-46 with 5:28 left in the period. Porter capped the Husker run with another bucket, and the run included a three-point play by Bourne.

Bourne, a 6-2 sophomore from Canberra, Australia, joined Porter in scoring seven points apiece in the third quarter to help the Huskers stay within striking distance. However, after Porter scored on a layup off a pass from Bourne with 4:09 left in the third, Maryland exploded on a 17-2 burst in the final four minutes of the period to take a 77-50 lead to the fourth quarter.

Despite the deficit, the Huskers continued to fight to the finish, winning the fourth quarter 23-18. The final period included six more points from Bourne and seven from senior center Kate Cain, who finished with 17 points, three rebounds and two blocks.

Cain (7-10), Porter (8-14) and Bourne (8-15) combined to go 23-for-39 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the game, but the rest of the Huskers managed to hit just 8-of-24 shots on the day. Nebraska still produced one of its best overall shooting games of the season, hitting 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field, but went just 4-of-17 from three-point range (.235).

Maryland, which entered the game as the nation's highest scoring offense at 91.5 points per game, put together an efficient effort from top-to-bottom and start-to-finish, hitting 39-of-70 shots (.557) including 8-of-19 three-pointers (.421). The Terps out-rebounded the Huskers 38-30 and won the turnover battle 12-8. 

Nebraska led 4-2 early after buckets by Cain and Bourne to start the game, before Maryland erupted on a 10-0 run that forced a Husker timeout just 3:25 into the contest. Porter scored NU's next five points to keep the Huskers within single digits at 18-9, but the Terps took a 27-16 lead to the second quarter.

Aussies Lead Huskers Against No. 9 Terps

On a field goal from Teddy Allen in the final seconds of the game, the Nebraska men's basketball team defeated Penn State, 62-61, on Sunday in State College, Pa. The win is the Huskers' first conference victory since defeating Iowa 76-70 on Jan. 7, 2020.

Allen's basket with 12 seconds to play ended an eight and a half minute scoring drought for the Huskers (5-12,1-9 Big Ten) and was just his second of two made field goals of the half. The junior led Nebraska with 14 points in the contest.  

Nebraska came out firing to start the second half with the team scoring the first five points of the half as Trey McGowens netting the first three. The Huskers put together an 11-point lead with under 10 minutes to play before the Nittany Lions (7-8, 4-9 Big Ten) scored 12 consecutive points to take a 61-60 edge with less than two minutes in regulation.

Nebraska withstood a slow start and battled back in the first half, as the game went to the locker room tied at 35-all. The Huskers shot 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes and got major production from Kobe Webster, who scored 10 first-half points in his first double-figure effort since Jan. 2. 

The Huskers trailed 20-12 before Webster's 3-pointer started a 9-2 spurt that pulled NU with 22-21 after a Derrick Walker dunk with 6:39 left in the half. The Huskers trailed 32-28 before Delano Banton scored five straight points as part of a 7-0 surge to put NU up 35-32 after an Yvan Ouedraogo basket with 1:23 remaining in the half. 

NU also had great ball movement in the first half with 12 assists on 15 baskets and just six turnovers after committing three in the first two minutes. 

Led by 13 points from Kobe Webster off the bench, Nebraska outscored Penn State 21-10 in bench points. NU also outrebounded the Nittany Lions 39-35 and held the team to 32.3 percent shooting on the day. 

Sunday's win marks just the second time in series history that Nebraska has beaten Penn State on the road and first since 2013. The Huskers picked up their tenth win in the overall series, improving to 10-11 all-time against the Nittany Lions. 

Myron Jones led the Penn State scoring effort with 18 points in the contest, including the final six points to give the team it's final lead of the game. John Harrar grabbed a team-high 11 boards for the Nittany Lions.  

The Huskers continue the three-game road trip with a pair of games at Maryland on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tipoff for both games is at 6 p.m. (CT) and both will be televised on BTN and carried on the Learfield IMG Husker Sports Network.

Nebraska Holds on to Defeat Penn State, 62-61

The Mid-Plains Community College family is mourning the loss of the lead cowboy of their rodeo team.

MPCC rodeo coach Garrett Nokes passed away on Sunday.

Nokes was injured on January 28 when he was kicked in the head by one of his horses.

According to family members, Nokes was life-flighted from the McCook hospital to a Kearney hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and had recovered to the point where he had returned home.

Family members say his passing was sudden and unexpected

According to a Facebook post, Nokes&nbsp;bulldogged at the 2005 National Finals Rodeo and finished fourth in the world that year. 

Another big thrill in his cowboy career was winning the #12 and his half of the $290,000 that went with it at the Ariat World Series of Team Roping Finale at the South Point in Vegas with Scott Smith in 2017.

Garrett graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University and has been an amazing mentor of young talent as Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team coach in North Platte.

“Garrett’s strong work ethic was second to none. He led by example and held high expectations for his student-athletes to do the same. Garrett will be missed, but the impact he had on people both inside and outside of the rodeo arena will live on through them forever,” said President Ryan Purdy.

Nokes is survived by his wife Laura and their two boys, Trevor and Parker.

According to a statement from the college,&nbsp;MPCC head rodeo coach Garrett Nokes sustained a head injury from a horse after returning to his home after rodeo practice on the evening of January 28.

Nokes was taken to the McCook Community Hospital and then life-flighted to Kearney where he underwent surgery to treat his head injury.

Garrett is continuing his recovery in Kearney.&nbsp; He was moved to acute rehab yesterday.

“Garrett is a great ambassador for MPCC and the Rodeo Team,” said President Ryan Purdy. “We ask that everyone continue to keep the Nokes family in their thoughts and prayers during this time.”

2.12.2021 NPHS Basketball @ Gering - LIVESTREAM

Lincoln - Trailing by 17 points to visiting Iowa with just under five minutes left, the Nebraska women's basketball team erupted on a 13-0 run in a span of just 2:36, but the Huskers could not complete the comeback in an 88-81 loss to the Hawkeyes on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers, who slipped to 9-8 overall and 7-7 in the Big Ten, trailed 78-61 with 4:53 left before MiCole Cayton hit a pair of free throws coming out of the final media timeout. Nebraska got a stop, and Sam Haiby knocked down a three-pointer, before Ashley Scoggin sank another to force an Iowa timeout. Nebraska got another stop out of the Hawkeye timeout as Bella Cravens drew an offensive foul on McKenna Warnock to put the ball back in Haiby's hands for another three-pointer - Nebraska's third in three consecutive possessions to pull with 78-72 with 2:32 left.

The Husker run didn't stop there, as Whitney Brown stole a pass from Iowa's Caitlin Clark and Haiby attacked the rim, drawing the fourth foul on Iowa's Monika Czinano. Haiby hit both free throws to make it 78-74 Iowa with 2:18 left and complete the 13-0 run.

Nebraska then made another play at the defensive end, as Annika Stewart drew an offensive foul on Czinano to put the Hawkeye center and the nation's leader in field goal percentage out of the game with 1:57 left. Czinano finished the night with 17 points.

The Huskers had a golden opportunity to make it a one possession game, as Haiby attacked from the left wing past Iowa's Tomi Taiwo but could not finish the layup with 1:42 left. Iowa then got a long three-pointer from Clark to end the NU run. It was Clark's sixth and final three-pointer of the night before sealing the win with six straight free throws in the final 32 seconds. Clark finished with a career-high 39 points on 12-of-18 shooting overall and 6-of-10 threes while going 9-for-9 at the free throw line. She added 10 rebounds and seven assists while also committing seven turnovers.

Clark's big night allowed Iowa to improve to 11-6 overall and 7-6 in the conference, stepping ahead of Nebraska in the Big Ten standings.

Haiby led Nebraska with 28 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter as the Huskers fought to the finish against the Hawkeyes. Isabelle Bourne added 16 points for the Big Red, while Cravens contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while Scoggin pitched in 10 points to put four Huskers in double figures.

While Clark put up gaudy numbers, it was Warnock who hit some of the game's biggest shots on her way to 19 points. Her three-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to end the third quarter sent the Hawkeyes to the final period with a 65-54 lead. She buried another three in the opening minute of the fourth to put Iowa up 70-57. She finished the night 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

As a team, Iowa hit 30-of-59 shots from the field (.508) including 12-of-24 threes and 16-of-20 free throws, including 11-of-12 in the fourth quarter. The Hawkeyes out-rebounded Nebraska 37-33, but the Huskers got 12 offensive boards compared to 10 for Iowa and outscored the Hawkeyes 8-7 in second-chance points.

The Huskers also won the turnover battle, 16-10 and outscored Iowa in points off turnovers 21-15. Nebraska hit 45.5 percent (30-66) of its shots on the night including 7-of-26 threes (.269). Nebraska opened the game 3-for-3 in the first quarter before missing its next 12 long-range attempts before Cayton's first three-pointer as a Husker to open the fourth quarter. NU also hit 14-of-19 free throws.

In a tightly contested first half, the lead went back-and-forth in a high-scoring first quarter before Iowa closed the period on a 7-0 run to take a 29-23 lead to the second quarter. Although the quarter was high scoring, it was not fast paced. In fact, the Hawkeyes scored 29 points on 11-of-14 field goal shooting, including 5-of-6 threes.

Nebraska answered with its highest scoring first quarter of the season with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting and 3-of-7 three-point shooting. 

The second quarter was played at a similar pace with a much different result. The Huskers held the Hawkeyes scoreless for the first four minutes of the period but managed just two Haiby layups to cut the margin to 29-27.

Clark, who scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting including 4-of-5 threes in the first half, hit a long three to end the Iowa drought before Warnock scored to give Iowa its biggest lead of the half at 34-27.

The Huskers responded with a 6-0 run that included four points from Stewart to pull within 34-33 with 2:45 left. But the Big Red  was unable to get any closer and Taiwo scored on a leak-out layup at the buzzer to send the Iowa to halftime with a 41-35 lead after the two teams both scored 12 points in the quarter.

Both teams went just 5-for-17 from the field in the second quarter.

In the half, the Huskers hit 40 percent (14-35) of their shots including 3-of-12 threes (.250), while hitting 4-of-6 free throws. Iowa hit 16-of-31 shots (.516), including 6-of-12 threes, while going 3-of-6 at the free throw line. Iowa out-rebounded Nebraska, 22-17, but the Huskers won the first-half turnover battle, 10-6. Haiby and Bourne each led Nebraska with nine first-half points, while Scoggin contributed seven points and Cravens pitched in six.

The North Platte Community College Knights dominated in their first home volleyball game of the season Wednesday night.

The Knights defeated Central Community College in three sets: 25-14, 25-19 and 25-15, bringing the Knights’ overall record to&nbsp;4-5.

Alysen Daniels, of Mullen, led the game with 10 kills. Peyton Negley, of North Platte, and Taylor Hansen, of Yuma, Colo., were right behind her with nine each.

Ruby Valle, of Weldona, Colo., had 23 digs, and Erica Hopping, of Sutherland, managed 33 assists.

“This was our Region IX opener, and I thought we came out and played well,” said&nbsp;NPCC&nbsp;head volleyball coach Alexa McCall. “We had a pretty spread-out offense because we passed well. I also thought we kept serve really well and put them out of system. It was great to have fans see the girls play as well.”

The Knights will head west this weekend where they will take on Western Nebraska Community College, Casper College, Laramie County Community College and Eastern Wyoming College as part of the Eastern Wyoming Invitational.
