Firefighters continue working to contain the Cottonwood Fire as crews monitor areas of activity near homes around Jeffrey Lake.

Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team One operations official Rob Powell said crews are working across several divisions of the fire to secure the perimeter and locate remaining hot spots.

“We did see some fire activity there, but we got them pretty well smashed,” Powell said.

Crews will spend the day mopping up hot spots along the fire’s edge and checking for any areas that could flare up again.

“We'll be up mopping up that stuff today and then looking for any more hot spots that might be along that edge,” Powell said.

One of the key areas of concern has been near homes around Jeffrey Lake, where fire activity increased at times.

“One place that's important is the homes around Jeffrey Lake,” Powell said.

Night crews were dispatched to monitor both the Cottonwood and Morrill fires and respond quickly if conditions changed.

“It was a little active up around Jeffrey Lake last night,” Powell said. “But talking to night division they got on those right away and kind of got those secured.”

Updated mapping and more accurate fire perimeter information are expected after infrared flights survey the fire area.

Powell also thanked local communities for their support of firefighters battling the wildfires.

“Appreciate all the support from the communities. It's been incredible,” he said.

President Trump's White House Chief of Staff diagnosed with cancer

Firefighters continue working to locate and extinguish hotspots on the Road 203 Fire near Halsey as crews use drones and ground resources to cool remaining heat across the fire area.

According to a Monday update from Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3, the wildfire is now estimated at 35,814 acres and remains 0% contained. The updated acreage reflects revised mapping of the fire perimeter.

Operations were limited Sunday due to cold weather conditions, but fire managers used the time to assess the fire’s current behavior.

“Operations were limited yesterday due to cold weather conditions; however, fire managers were able to assess the fire perimeter and evaluate current conditions,” the update states.

While snow remains on the ground in some areas, officials say heat is still present within parts of the fire.

“While there is snow on the ground in some areas, heat is still present in the duff, and creeping fire behavior has been observed within the fire perimeter,” according to the update. “Groups of cedar trees in some areas of the fire are also still retaining heat.”

To help locate these remaining hotspots, firefighters began using drones equipped with infrared technology.

“Yesterday, firefighters began utilizing UAS (drones) equipped with infrared technology to identify hotspots,” the update states. “This information is relayed to crews on the ground to quickly access and efficiently extinguish those areas of heat.”

Officials say two drone platforms will be operating Monday to assist with the continued suppression effort.

Fire crews are also working to improve access to remote areas of the fire perimeter.

“Crews will continue improving access to several areas of the fire using UTVs, allowing firefighters to focus efforts on cooling remaining hotspots and securing the edge of the fire,” the update states.

A total of 160 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, supported by two aircraft, 24 engines and five heavy equipment units.

Weather conditions will continue to influence firefighting operations in the coming days.

Officials say temperatures Monday are expected to reach the mid-30s, with minimum relative humidity near 21%. Northwest winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour with gusts up to 25 miles per hour could still create near-critical fire weather conditions due to the combination of wind and low humidity.

A warming trend is expected to begin Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to climb into the upper 60s and continue rising through the week.

“Although winds are expected to moderate, warming temperatures and dry fuels could lead to more active fire behavior later in the week,” the update states.

The Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest remains closed while crews continue responding to the wildfire.

A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in place over the fire area, and officials remind the public that drones and unauthorized aircraft are not allowed near the fire.

Before the current fires, one of the largest individual wildfires documented in the state was the Betty’s Way Fire in 2024, which burned roughly 71,000 acres in Lincoln, Dawson and Custer counties.

That means the Morrill Fire has already burned nearly half a million acres more than what had previously been considered one of Nebraska’s largest modern wildfires.

Nebraska has experienced major wildfire seasons before, particularly during drought years such as 2012, when multiple fires combined to burn more than 500,000 acres statewide. However, those totals were spread across numerous fires rather than a single blaze.

With the Morrill Fire now approaching 550,000 acres, it stands as the largest single wildfire ever recorded in Nebraska, dwarfing previous fires in the state’s history.

Meanwhile, the Cottonwood Fire, which has surpassed 100,000 acres, has also grown larger than most historic Nebraska wildfires on its own.

Fire crews from across Nebraska and neighboring states continue working to contain the fires as dry conditions and strong winds remain a challenge.

Western Nebraska Wildfires Are Shattering State Records

It cost 3.7 cents to make each 1-cent coin in 2024, according to the U.S. Mint. The move led to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/penny-coins-lincoln-shortage-us-mint-trump-089cf657b3fa4d6dc21533cf6bb08cf3">shortage of pennies</a>&nbsp;in cash registers last summer, forcing consumers and businesses to confront a penniless future in which making exact change would be difficult.

The Treasury Department has said it will continue circulating the roughly 114 billion pennies that exist for “as long as possible.” Pennies must still be accepted as payment.

One solution to the penny problem is rounding to the nearest nickel, using a practice called symmetrical rounding. If the final price, after taxes, ends in one, two, six or seven cents, payment in cash rounds down. For example, $1.91 or $1.92 becomes $1.90. If the price ends in three, four, eight or nine, cash payment rounds up. For $1.98 or $1.99, the consumer pays $2.

A bill introduced last year in Congress and passed out of the House financial services committee would apply symmetrical rounding across the country. U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., said in an email the federal law is important to prevent a “confusing patchwork of state policies.”

The bill hasn’t been voted on in the House and would still need to move through the U.S. Senate before reaching Trump’s desk.

In the meantime, bills to deal with penniless cash transactions have passed both chambers and await the governor's signature in Arizona, Florida, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington. Some states are proposing to allow businesses to round cash purchases, while others consider requiring it.

In Indiana, a bill signed into law this month by Republican Gov. Mike Braun tells businesses they must round cash purchases for all transactions that do not end in a zero or five. Lawmakers revised that provision in a second bill that makes rounding optional, which would take effect Sunday if Braun signs it into law.

In both bills, Indiana businesses can choose to always round cash purchases up to the nearest nickel, always round down or round up or down depending on the amount.

In Republican-led Tennessee, legislation makes symmetrical rounding exempt from legal claims under a state consumer protection law but does not require rounding.

“It is to provide safe harbor for private businesses,” said Republican Rep. Charlie Baum, the bill sponsor in Tennessee, during floor debate.

Rounding bills have been introduced in about two dozen states since late last year, according to an Associated Press analysis using the&nbsp;<a href="https://pluralpolicy.com/app/tagged-bills/49286">bill-tracking service Plural</a>.

Outside of lawmaking bodies, some state agencies have published guidelines to advise that rounding should happen after tax, and that businesses must make sure the full taxed amount still goes to the state.

Cash isn’t used as ubiquitously since the rise in electronic payment methods. Still, about 8 in 10 U.S. adults said they recently used cash in a 2024 survey conducted by the Federal Reserve. Cash was more often used by older adults and those in lower-income households.

The Treasury&nbsp;<a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/featured-stories/penny-production-cessation-faqs">wrote online</a>&nbsp;that prices would be “rounded down just as often as they will be rounded up, so there should be no overall effect on consumer prices.”

But researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond used a 2023 survey to show prices that didn’t end in zero or five were especially likely to end in eight or nine. Payment amounts could be different when multiple items are purchased or depending on the tax rate, but overall, prices more often being rounded up would lead to millions of dollars gained by businesses and lost by consumers collectively, amounting to a few pennies lost per person.

As businesses have introduced rounding, some Americans have taken to social media to say they feel scammed, even if it is a penny or two at a time.

Nikki Capozzo-Hennessy, 50, said she tends to pay in cash because it makes her more conscious of her spending. The Trumbull, Connecticut, resident posted her grocery store receipt online when she noticed the rounding adjustment on a purchase of $8.73, with tax. The store chose to round down and she gained three cents.

Capozzo-Hennessy said it might feel taxing if she had to hand over extra pennies every time, but she also thinks it’s practical to stick with one rule. She runs a food truck business and said they’d likely use symmetrical rounding to be consistent.

“At the end of the day it’s three cents, but I can imagine with all the purchases that you make, it can add up,” Capozzo-Hennessy said.

Washington state Rep. April Berg, who introduced a rounding bill there, said she understands people who feel frustrated losing a penny but that the elimination of the hard currency leaves little option.

“We did make sure that everyone is allowed to pay exactly what they owe,” Berg said of her legislation.

The Treasury says ceasing penny production will save $56 million annually, but rounding could increase demand for nickels. The 5-cent coins also are costly to make, reaching nearly 14 cents each in 2024, according to the Mint.

The proposed federal legislation currently includes a potential cost-saving solution, allowing the Treasury to adjust the coin’s composition to use cheaper zinc and nickel instead of copper and nickel.

Firefighters continue working to suppress the Road 203 Fire near Halsey as changing weather conditions bring both challenges and some moderation in fire behavior.

According to the latest update from fire officials, the wildfire remains 36,403 acres in size and 0% contained. The fire is burning in and around the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey.

Overnight weather brought new challenges for firefighters working in the area.

“Overnight, snow fell across the fire area; combined with increased winds, weather conditions have deteriorated and created hazardous driving conditions,” officials said in the update. “Fire managers will take firefighter and public safety into account when planning actions for today.”

Despite the difficult weather conditions, officials say fire activity slowed somewhat compared to earlier days.

“Fire behavior moderated significantly yesterday compared to previous days,” the update states. “Firefighters, engines, heavy equipment, and aircraft continue working to suppress the Road 203 Fire using direct extinguishment strategies where conditions allow.”

Crews are continuing suppression work across several parts of the fire perimeter. In the north-central portion of the fire, firefighters worked alongside aerial resources to target remaining heat in patchy timber areas.

“Dozer line construction continues, and crews are prepared to protect structures if needed,” officials said.

Firefighters report the fire remains north of the Dismal River, which has helped slow the fire’s spread.

“The fire remains on the north side of the Dismal River as firefighters continue to patrol the perimeter and check for remaining heat,” the update states.

Crews have also begun mop-up operations in areas where flames have been contained.

“Mop-up involves locating and extinguishing remaining areas of heat to lessen the chances of the fire rekindling.”

Officials say new technology will also help crews locate lingering hot spots.

“Because of the colder temperatures expected today and tomorrow morning, crews plan to utilize an infrared-capable UAS (drone) during the early, cooler daytime hours, as conditions allow, when heat signatures will be more easily detected.”

Weather conditions will continue to influence firefighting operations. A high wind advisory is in effect for the area.

Officials say north to northwest winds of 33 to 39 miles per hour with gusts up to 55 miles per hour are expected today. Temperatures are forecast to reach the low 30s, with relative humidity in the mid-30% range.

While the cooler temperatures and higher humidity may help limit fire spread, officials say fire activity remains possible.

“While cooler temperatures and higher humidity will help limit fire spread and spotting potential, fire activity remains possible in light, flashy fuels when winds align,” the update states. “Any new ignitions could spread quickly under these conditions.”

Overnight temperatures could fall to around 9 degrees, with warmer and drier conditions expected to return next week.

“Sunny and drier conditions return Monday, with temperatures warming through the week and reaching the 80s by mid-week.”

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is also in place over the fire area, meaning unauthorized aircraft and drones are not allowed.

“All unauthorized aircraft (including drones) are prohibited from flying near the fire, as they can interfere with authorized air support operations,” officials said. “If you fly, we can’t.”

The Department of War has released the names of the six service members who were killed on March 12 when a U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed during&nbsp;combat operations in support of Operation Epic Fury.

According to the U.S. Department of War the six are Maj. John A. Klinner, 33, of Auburn, Ala.; Capt. Ariana G. Savino, 31, of Covington, Wash.; and Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, 34, of Bardstown, Ky., were assigned to the 6th Air Refueling Wing, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. and Capt. Seth R. Koval, 38, of Mooresville, Ind.; Capt. Curtis J. Angst, 30, of Wilmington, Ohio; and Tech. Sgt. Tyler H. Simmons, 28, of Columbus, Ohio were assigned to the 121st Air Refueling Wing at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Columbus, Ohio.

KEITH COUNTY, NE&nbsp;-- Today, Governor Jim Pillen provided an update on operations following an aerial tour of wildfires burning across Nebraska. He was joined in the briefing at the Keith County Fairgrounds by U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith. Lt. Colonel Scott Henrickson, chief of the joint staff for the Nebraska National Guard also spoke, providing an update on personnel and equipment deployed by the Nebraska National Guard to support local firefighters

In total, three of the state’s largest wildfires have damaged around 600,000 acres. Gov. Pillen spoke specifically about impacts resulting from the Morrill County Fire, which has now consumed 460,000 acres and the Lincoln County (Cottonwood Fire) near Gothenburg, which has burned 100,000 acres. The Road 203 Fire near Halsey has burned 40,000 acres.

Gov. Pillen emphasized that the state is taking a proactive approach to enlisting additional resources for fire suppression and providing assistance to community volunteer firefighters, who have been working around the clock. Earlier today, he called the mayors of Omaha, Lincoln and Columbus to see what fire personnel and equipment they would be able to provide. He also indicated he would contact other mayors and nearby states like Iowa, to see what assistance they could lend.

“This is a fight from the river to Harrison, and I’m really excited that we’re getting people deployed to help our volunteer firefighters,” he added.

The Nebraska National Guard has deployed 29 airmen and soldiers to assist with firefighting efforts in central and western Nebraska. That includes a ground firefighting hand crew, which is working shoulder to shoulder with local fire teams. Two Nebraska Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters equipped with Bambi buckets have also been flown to the area for aerial firefighting support.

“We are working to get more resources into the state, but as we heard, there are multiple fires across multiple states,” said Lt. Col. Henrickson. “We are still working to see what is available and of course, bring that up in a unified effort here with the local emergency management team as well as our Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).”

NEMA has requested and received approval from FEMA for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), which is designed to help support efforts to mitigate, manage, and control fires on public or private forests or grasslands. That assistance may help recover some of the costs associated with the state’s ongoing fire response.

Gov. Pillen also mentioned ongoing assistance from the Nebraska Department of Transportation which is providing road graders in order to create necessary roadblocks to prevent the spread of flames.

During the news conference, the Governor reiterated a message shared previously – the need to heed any locally-issued evacuation orders. Officials yesterday confirmed one fire-related fatality.

“I think it’s important that all Nebraskans pray. The circumstances have not changed. Yesterday was one of the toughest days, and through the night, that we’ve probably ever experienced in our state,” said Gov. Pillen. “Tomorrow, the winds are supposed to be extraordinary.”

Firefighters continue working to slow the spread of the Road 203 Fire near Halsey as crews focus on protecting nearby communities and key resources across the Nebraska National Forest.

According to the latest update from Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3, the wildfire has burned 36,403 acres and remains 0% contained.

“At 8:00 a.m. today, March 14, the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3 assumed command of the Road 203 Fire,” the official update states. “Numerous local responders and fire departments worked together during the initial attack of the Road 203 Fire. This cooperation and effort has established a strong foundation for ongoing operations.”

Operations Section Chief Beau Kidd said firefighters are continuing suppression efforts after several days of rapid fire growth.

“Several days ago this fire had rapid fire movement, threatening the towns of Dunning, Halsey, and to a lesser extent, Thedford,” Kidd said during a briefing. “Yesterday’s efforts were focused on getting some equipment in there and some engine support to back that up.”

Aircraft have also been assisting crews on the ground.

“We also used aircraft with retardant and water dropping aircraft from helicopters to support the crews out there,” Kidd said. “Going right on the fire’s edge is what we call direct suppression actions.”

Fire managers say extreme winds over the past two days have caused significant fire activity and growth on the Road 203 Fire.

Firefighters, engines, aircraft and heavy equipment are continuing coordinated suppression operations, including building fire lines and using aerial retardant drops to slow the fire’s spread.

Kidd said one of the main priorities Sunday is the northern portion of the fire.

“There still remains activity out here along the northern front in between Dunning and Halsey,” he said. “And that’s really an area of focus for us today is to get the dozers reengaged, start pushing line, and having the crews back that up with water support.”

Aircraft remain available to assist if needed.

“We do have aircraft available to us today with helicopters, dropping water, and then also the large air tankers if necessary,” Kidd said.

Officials say protecting communities and local resources remains a top priority.

“We’re focused on what we call value at risk and what’s important to the members of the public here, the communities, and our hosting agency on the Nebraska National Forest,” Kidd said. “Those values are obviously the communities of Dunning and Halsey, but also the forage, the rangelands out there. I know that’s an important part of the economics of the communities around here.”

Crews are also monitoring other areas of the fire perimeter.

Kidd said firefighters have established secure line in the northwest portion of the fire but are continuing to patrol the area.

“We don’t want to rest on our laurels,” he said. “We want to be diligent about extinguishing any remaining hot spots out there.”

Crews are also monitoring areas near Thedford and the Highway 83 corridor to ensure the fire does not spread toward homes.

Along the southern portion of the fire, the Dismal River corridor is helping slow the fire’s progress.

“The river and the river bottom vegetation [are] kind of a natural barrier to fire,” Kidd said. “So I feel like that’s in a good secure spot right now.”

Firefighters remain in the area patrolling and monitoring to protect nearby ranches and livestock.

Weather conditions could continue to challenge firefighters.

A red flag warning is in effect with warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, conditions officials say could increase fire activity.

“Today will be a challenging day,” Kidd said. “But we have the right complement of resources out there to accept any challenges that come our way.”

The Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest remains closed while crews continue fighting the wildfire.

Operations chief outlines strategy as Road 203 Fire continues burning near Halsey

CASS COUNTY, Mo.—A Nebraska man died in an accident just before 10:30p.m. Friday near Kansas City.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by a 30-year-old Lee's Summit man was southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 49 at MO 291&nbsp; &nbsp;The SUV struck a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by a 22-year-old Seward, Nebraska man.

The driver of the Prius was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Forensic Medical of Kansas.&nbsp;

 EMS transported the SUV driver and two passengers in the Prius including a 21-year-old man a 24-year-old Lincoln, Nebraska man to Research Medical Center. EMS also transported a third passenger in the Prius, a. 21-year-old Omaha, Nebraska man to Belton Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; The Omaha man was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP. 

The Patrol did not report the hometown of the 21-year-old transported to Research Medical Center. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– For 50 years, David Boxler's career with Nebraska Extension has been grounded in science, service and solutions for Nebraska cattle producers, providing effective practices to control pests around livestock.

Boxler, an Extension Educator and livestock entomologist, has his home base at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln West Central Research, Extension and Education Center, but his fingerprints can be found across the state and beyond.

Key breakthroughs in his career — such as establishing an economic injury level for stable flies in feedlots, identifying the impact of stable flies on pastured cattle, and testing a variety of methods to control pasture stable flies — have led to improved pest management and increased awareness among producers.

Boxler began his Extension career as a research technician under livestock entomologist Jack Campbell. At the time, Boxler held a bachelor’s degree in botany and had limited experience in entomology. With encouragement from Campbell, he soon pursued and completed a master’s degree in entomology, laying the foundation for his future work and transitioning into a research technologist role.

“The way I process things and deliver Extension programs to this day is based on Jack’s mentorship,” Boxler said.

Through his work with Campbell, Boxler began to see the value of Extension as a direct connection between university research and producers. He recognized a strong and ongoing need for research-based information in livestock pest management. This need continues as invasive species such as the New World screwworm and the Asian longhorned tick pose new threats to producers and resistance challenges increase.

With challenges like these on the horizon during his career, Boxler continuously worked directly with producers to understand their concerns and incorporate their ideas into his research.

An Extension-led workshop in Ainsworth focused on fly control led to testing a rancher’s idea: a patch designed to stick to an animal’s leg. His willingness to collaborate between research ideas and the experiences of those in the field is one main reason his career has continued to remain relevant and applicable during the last five decades.

“You rely on producer insight because they are out there, and they are the ones making observations,” Boxler said.

As he continues to find effective ways to control flies on cattle, Boxler believes one of the most important breakthroughs of his career is discovering plant-based biopesticides because of their safety when applied to animals.

Over the past 20 years, Boxler has conducted significant research on plant-based biopesticides. 

These products are believed to be effective, provide a tool for dairy and organic producers, and have limited impact on many off-target species.

“It has been something very memorable to me to be involved essentially at the ground floor of this movement,” Boxler said.

Boxler hopes to see the final formulation of plant-based biopesticides evaluated and approved for marketing before he concludes his career.

With a legacy of unwavering commitment to Nebraska’s cattle producers, Boxler has helped transform the way producers approach controlling pests around their herds.

“Jack Campbell told me once, ‘Find a pest that you cannot control, and you will have a job for life,’ and that is where the stable fly comes in,” Boxler said

Further west, firefighters responded to a wildfire in the Nebraska Panhandle that spread from Morrill County toward neighboring Garden County, prompting evacuations as the fire moved across dry grassland.

Fires were also reported in parts of the Nebraska Sandhills, including a wildfire that threatened the communities of Dunning and Halsey in Blaine and Thomas counties. Dubbed the Road 203 Fire at over 5,000 acers and growing as of Thursday evening. Evacuation orders were issued for residents in the area as fire crews worked to protect structures and stop the spread of flames across the region’s grasslands.

Evacuations Issued as Wildfires Burn Across Nebraska During Red Flag Conditions

WASHINGTON —Two U.S. sailors are recovering after a fire on board an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea.

On March 12, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) experienced a fire that originated in the ship’s main laundry spaces, according to a statement fro&nbsp;U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet.

The cause of the fire was not combat-related and is contained.

There is no damage to the ship’s propulsion plant, and the aircraft carrier remains fully operational.
