Ogallala back to school orientations/open houses tonight

GRANT, NEB - Over the weekend, The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Drive-In Movie which featured the movie Top Gun: Maverick, which was released in May of 2022.&nbsp;

The free will donation event was held at the Perkins County Fairgrounds in Grant, Nebraska. The sound system was set up that it came in on FM transmitter, so folks could tune in 107.9 if they wanted to listen along in their car. There was also a PA System for folks who wanted to sit outside in a lawn chair.

The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce plans on showing a new movie every month with weather permitting. Concessions were available during the moving screening. The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce will announce next month's movie at a later date.&nbsp;

Derek Beck talked with Jodi Hinds about the upcoming Livin' Out Loud event in Gothenburg August 19th-20th.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Livin' Out Loud, which is the largest Christian Festival is going to be in Gothenburg next Saturday and Sunday at Lake Helen. The event is free to the public and expected to bring anywhere from 12 to 16 thousand to Gothenburg over the two days.&nbsp;

Livin' Out Loud features Christian bands that are well known. "The bands that we have this year are all in the top 10, top 15 and I mean they are incredible," said Jodi Hinds. "We are so excited to have them (the bands) and they are great people too, last year a lot of them came and signed autographs." Bands featured this year are Cain who has #1 hits coming out all the time, Cory Asbury, Katy Nichole, Ben Fuller, and All The Noise.&nbsp;

North Platte, Nebraska - On October 9th and 10th, the best of Nebraska High School Class C girls’ golfers will unite in North Platte for the state championship tournament. The event is expected to draw 95-115 golfers from across the state to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Along with the participants, we are expecting many friends and family to travel alongside their girls to support them.&nbsp;

There is a need for volunteers to assist with the NSAA Class C Girls State Golf Championship. Volunteer positions include scoring monitors, spotters, score card checkers, and alternates. Volunteering is a great way to get involved with the community, and you’ll be able to help showcase what a spectacular area North Platte is! &nbsp;During the Labor Day holiday period, including the end of summertime and the busy holiday weekend, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be working alongside other law enforcement agencies to decrease impaired driving.&nbsp; 

From August 18th through September 4th the North Platte Police Department will be participating in the “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over” high visibility enforcement period.&nbsp; In support of the law enforcement community’s dedication to protecting the lives of community residents, you’ll see officers working together during this time to take drunk drivers off the roads.&nbsp;

No matter how you plan to celebrate the end of summer this year, develop a plan to do it safely.&nbsp; Line up a ride from a sober friend or designated driver before the festivities.

According to NHTSA, 13,384 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2021-that’s one person every 39 minutes.&nbsp; During the 2021 Labor Day period, there were 531 crash fatalities nationwide.&nbsp; 41% involved a drunk driver. 

This is why the North Platte Police Department is working together with NHTSA to remind drivers that drunk driving is not only illegal; it’s a matter of life and death.&nbsp; As you head out to festivities during the end of summer and Labor Day weekend, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<b>OMAHA, Neb. –&nbsp;</b>Students across the Midwest are returning to school and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Omaha Division is reminding families to make time for honest discussions about the dangers associated with the experimentation and use of drugs.

“Never underestimate the impact that one conversation can have,” DEA Omaha Division Special Agent in Charge Justin C. King said. “We all know how hard it is to start these conversations, but the consequences that can come from not communicating and educating one another on the dangers of drugs such as fentanyl, can be life-altering.”

Fentanyl seizures across the five state DEA Omaha Division, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota, continue to rise as pills and powder make their way into the country. In 2022, investigators across the DEA Omaha Division removed nearly six million deadly doses of fentanyl to include more than 170,000 fake fentanyl pills.

According to the CDC, a leading cause of death for Americans ages 18-45 is drug poisoning. Just two milligrams of fentanyl, small enough to fit on the tip of a pencil, is considered a potentially lethal dose and six out of 10 pills tested at DEA laboratories contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. This marks an increase from 2021, when four out of 10 pills tested contained a potentially deadly dose of fentanyl.

Fentanyl comes in every shape and color and oftentimes is made to look like legitimate prescription medications including Oxycodone, Xanax and Adderall.

“Legitimate prescription pills can’t be purchased on social media,” King said. “We really want to emphasize this. A lot of people aren’t aware what they’re buying online and ingesting is actually fentanyl disguised as a legitimate medication. Only take medication that was prescribed specifically to you and filled at your pharmacy. Taking anything else can lead to tragic consequences.”

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Sutherland Chamber of Commerce Makers Market Craft and Vendor Fair will be held August 27th in downtown Sutherland. This is the third year of the event with my returning vendors. The event is from 10am - 3pm central time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event will welcome many different vendors to the show and also still accepting registrations. "Right now we have right around 50 vendors, a few keep trickling in and we are accepting more but it will be just a great time," said Muriel Clark. "We have everything from home decor, to clothing, to leather goods, and everything in between."&nbsp;

The OVFD was paged for a vehicle fire in the county. Agency responded with command, engine, and tender. MA called from Brule immediately. On arrival, found van style semi trailer actively burning from the rear axles and already extended to freight. 

Extinguishment was hampered by high volume of traffic on roadway and access into trailer due to the size and volume of the freight. Heavy equipment was requested from NDOR and roadway shut down request made. KCSO and OPD, with NDOR staff, diverted traffic for approximately 4 hours. 

KLFD was called for extra tenders and Big Springs FD for pack personnel to assist with salvage and overhaul. Ogallala Volunteer EMS provided rehab/standby at scene.  Due to the professionalism and unparalleled cooperation between local agencies, no secondary accidents or injuries occurred. 

Fire cause determined to be mechanical in nature from faulty brake or wheel bearing on trailer. Trailer damaged beyond repair. Contents damaged by fire and smoke. Thanks to all agencies involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Make A Wish Kearney Evening of Wishes event is going on August 17th at 5pm central time, at the Younes Center in Kearney. There is a dress code and its business casual.&nbsp; The event will feature auctions, guest speakers, children who have had their wish granted, and a special wish reveal at the end.&nbsp;

The Make A Wish Kearney Evening of Wishes event is a fundraiser to raise more money for Make A Wish Greater Nebraska. "The funds from this particular event that's held in Kearney is for all kiddos from west of York County," said Courtney Hughbanks, Make A Wish Greater Nebraska Director of Development.&nbsp;
