Rich Reinert has a part in the Buffalo Bill Rodeo that fans never see.

The North Platte man makes the rodeo run smoother, and the fans don’t even notice it.

His job, as a volunteer, is to let announcer Randy Corley know what cowboy is next, during the bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding.

Because it is loud in front of the arena, Reinert uses a set of flip cards, each numbered, to indicate to Corley, so Corley can announce to the crowd which cowboy will be riding next, out of which chute.

In his former career, he was stepping in front of the bulls, instead of behind the chutes.

He worked as a bullfighter, first for regional rodeos, then in the PRCA. He worked from coast to coast, at rodeos across the nation, often traveling with rodeo clown Butch Lehmkuhler.

Born in 1949 and raised on a ranch near Johnstown, Neb., he admired a bullfighter from a neighboring town, asking him if he could help. “I bugged him, till he finally relented,” Reinert said, at a rodeo in Harrison, Neb., in 1969, in the mud.

He worked as a bullfighter at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo one year, but is very proud of his streak of 28 years of working the Cody, Wyo. Rodeo, held over July 4. He retired from bullfighting in 2009.

Along with his rodeo career, Reinert taught school. He started as a high school math teacher, doing that for nine years, then switched to elementary P.E. for 25 years, and then spent six more years as the athletic director, all at North Platte Public Schools.

He got started volunteering with the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in conversation with Hadley Barrett, now deceased, and Randy Corley, co-announcers of the rodeo.

“For a while it was a lot of yelling” up to the announcer’s stand, Reinert said, till they devised the numbered flip cards.

Reinert was in the arena, so that Barrett, who was on horseback, could see him, as well as Corley, who was in the announcer’s stand. There were sometimes problems, Reinert said. “It was hard for Hadley to see the cards, and sometimes it was hard for me to find him,” he chuckled. “He might be in the northwest corner of the arena, then the southwest corner, or in the catch pen.”

Barrett passed away in 2018, and now Reinert does his work from the catwalk behind the chutes, instead of in the arena, which is safer. “I’m more visible to Randy, in that respect,” he said. “And I don’t have to be worried about getting run over by a horse or a bull, but I might get run over by (stock contractor) Bennie Beutler.”

Reinert volunteers at other activities, too. He helps at the state high school track meet as a clerk of the start, volunteers at the hospital, and helps out with sporting events at the North Platte High School, when needed. He works part time at the golf course, too. “I try to stay busy.”

He is a 28-year survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and has been married 51 years to his wife Chris. They have two daughters: Amanda Reinert, who teaches in Kearney, and Andrea Hayes, married to Ryan Hayes. Andrea and Ryan have two children: a daughter, Ashyln, and a son, Logan.

Reinert takes great pride in the Buffalo Bill Rodeo and its quality. “It’s pride in what the community offers,” he said. “If there’s something I can do to help make it better, then I’m in.”

He loves seeing old faces and friends when the rodeo comes around every June, and loves being part of it.

“I pitch in and help wherever I can, and stay out of the way the rest of the time.

“Rodeo is a different life and I’m fortunate that I got to be a part of it, and still am. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing, as long as they want me.”

This year’s rodeo will be held June 16-19 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Former North Platte rodeo bullfighter, now volunteer with Buffalo Bill Rodeo

Mrs. Lyndsey Douglas was recognized as May Staff&nbsp;Person&nbsp;of the Month at North Platte Public Schools. 

Mrs. Douglas has been with the NPPS District since 2008. She started teaching 2nd grade at Jefferson Elementary and then 4th grade at McDonald Elementary School. In 2018 she was named principal at Eisenhower. She has also been a HAL Leader and Middle School Volleyball Coach. She earned her Masters of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2013 and will transition to her new district position of Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning in June 2021.

Kay Wright, Eisenhower Administrative Professional said the following of Mrs. Douglas:

"Mrs. Douglas has boosted the morale of Eisenhower so much in the last three years. It wasn’t terrible before but she listens to all staff members and handles things with grace. She notices great things teachers are doing and lets them know how proud she is of them even when they think they are on a sinking ship. In November she draws a staff member’s name and we write them little notes on why we are thankful for them—this carries on into December because she includes kitchen and custodial staff as well. Then she gets us through December with the 12 days of Christmas which every day she does special things for the staff. I have enjoyed all of the principals I have worked with the past 16 years, but I feel Mrs. Douglas is very deserving of this Staff Member of the month. She has a vision and very much a forward thinker. The interests of her students are her first priority. Mrs. Douglas handles staff, students and parents with finesse."

Eisenhower's Mrs. Douglas named NPPSF Staff Person of the Month

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nearly half of Nebraska’s adult population has now been vaccinated against the coronavirus. 

The state said Monday that 49.6% of the population aged 16 and up has now been fully vaccinated and more than 1.5 million doses of the shots have been administered across Nebraska. 

The campaign to distribute the shots continues to make progress across the state although the pace of vaccinations has slowed in recent weeks as demand has weakened. 

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 322.71 new cases per day on April 24 to 186.71 new cases per day on Saturday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A proposal to let people play keno on their mobile phones in Nebraska bars and keno parlors stalled abruptly after lawmakers stripped it out of a casino legalization bill. 

Lawmakers voted 27-11 to remove the provision from a broader bill that would regulate Nebraska’s new casino industry. 

Voters legalized casinos in November despite opposition from prominent gambling opponents, including Gov. Pete Ricketts. 

Voters didn’t directly address keno when they approved the constitutional amendment to allow casinos. But supporters argued that casinos will end up hurting the keno industry, which generates millions of dollars in tax revenue for Nebraska cities each year. 

Under current state law, keno is still played with paper cards, while casinos offer flashier, computerized games.

On Friday, May 14&nbsp;from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., NebraskaLand National Bank will host its annual Community Shred Day at the Main Bank location, 1400 South Dewey Street.&nbsp;

With an increase in internet scams and fraudulent behavior, the importance of identity theft prevention and awareness has risen as well. Practicing prevention methods such as shredding bank statements and personal information helps to decrease fraud and theft.

LINCOLN, Neb.-Attorney General Doug Peterson joined in co-leading a letter along with the attorneys general of Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Vermont. The letter cites serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children and the harm social media poses to young people and contends that Facebook has historically failed to protect the welfare of children on its platforms.&nbsp;

The coalition of 44 attorneys general is urging Facebook to abandon its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13.&nbsp;

“The business model of almost all social media platforms is to get the user to be engaged on the screen for as long as possible. This allows companies like Instagram to accumulate extensive personal data on every user to be sold to advertisers. The fact that they now want to focus on collecting the data of children is very troubling,” stated AG Peterson.

In their letter, the attorneys general express various concerns over Facebook’s proposal, including research that, in addition to social media harms to the well-being of children; rapidly worsening concerns about cyberbullying on Instagram; use of the platform by predators to target children; Facebook’s checkered record in protecting the welfare of children on its platforms; and children’s lack of capacity to navigate the complexities of what they encounter online, including advertising, inappropriate content, and relationships with strangers.&nbsp;

National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children’s CyberTipline is the nation’s centralized reporting system for the online exploitation of children, including child sexual abuse material, child sex trafficking, and online enticement. They noted in 2020, Facebook and Instagram reported 20 million child sexual abuse images.&nbsp;

The attorneys general also cast doubt on Facebook’s ability to protect children on their proposed Instagram platform and comply with relevant privacy laws such as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Nebraska Attorney General Peterson, others urge Facebook to halt Instagram for kids launch

After
months of working with state government, education and health leaders, schools
in all 50 states have been given the go-ahead to resume high school sports at
some level of competition. Schools in the District of Columbia were the last to
receive the green light on April 1. This is great news and signals that a
return to normalcy may be on the horizon by the time schools begin sports and
activities this fall.

Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing issue that could put a kink
in the return-to-play plans in Kansas and across the country – a shortage of
officials, as in referees and umpires, that borders on catastrophic in some
sports and in some parts of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;


The
shortage of officials in high school – and middle school – sports has been a
growing concern for several years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved the
issue to heightened levels. 

In
some cases, schools that have waited months and months to “play ball” have had
to cancel games or reschedule games. There are so many contests occurring, with
some states currently playing football and other sports they were unable to
offer last fall, coupled with regular spring sports now underway, there simply
are not enough people to officiate all scheduled games.

According to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO),
registration of officials across the country is down about 30 percent this
year. In Kansas from 2019-20 to 2020-2021 we saw a 14% reduction of officials
registering.&nbsp; Five hundred-twenty fewer officials
registered in 2020-2021. In the past 10 years – since 2010-2011 we are down 26%
- 1092 few officials registered in 2020-2021. Sports with the largest percent
decrease were basketball and wrestling at approximately 17% reduction. 

Tennessee and Georgia have reported declines in baseball umpires. In one
county in Georgia, one middle school had to cancel its baseball season due to a
lack of umpires.

As vaccinations increase and the optics improve, many of
these individuals hopefully will return. 

For
other officials, however, the pandemic was a secondary concern compared to the
verbal abuse they receive from fans – mostly parents. It is particularly hard
for rookie officials to overcome the verbal shots they hear from parents. In an
article in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, Jeff Cluff, assistant director in
charge of officials for the UHSAA, had the following to say about unruly fans
in his state: 

“Parents are out of control ... Because of the club and super-league
culture, they think these games mean everything; we don’t look at it that way
in high school. Kids are learning, the officials are learning, the coaches are
learning. We have lots of people who are interested in officiating. If we could
keep these officials, we’d be fine.”

Schools in Kansas need two things: 1) more individuals to consider
officiating high school sports and 2) an improvement in fan behavior so that
officials don’t have to deal with verbal abuse and can feel good about
continuing to officiate. Despite the fun and rewards that come with officiating
high school sports, no one wants to continue if they are continually berated by
fans.

The NFHS has been actively
recruiting officials for four years through its #BecomeAnOfficial campaign.
More than 50,000 individuals have expressed interest in officiating during this
time. However, more individuals are desperately needed to keep the games going
for the millions of students in middle school and high school sports. Anyone

More
importantly, let’s do all we can to keep the men and women who are currently
giving of their time to officiate middle school and high school sports. The
next time you think about yelling at the referee during a high school contest,

months of working with state government, education and health leaders, schools
in all 50 states have been given the go-ahead to resume high school sports at
some level of competition. Schools in the District of Columbia were the last to
receive the green light on April 1. This is great news and signals that a
return to normalcy may be on the horizon by the time schools begin sports and
activities this fall.<figure>

 </figure>Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing issue that could put a kink
in the return-to-play plans in Kansas and across the country – a shortage of
officials, as in referees and umpires, that borders on catastrophic in some
sports and in some parts of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The
shortage of officials in high school – and middle school – sports has been a
growing concern for several years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved the
issue to heightened levels. In
some cases, schools that have waited months and months to “play ball” have had
to cancel games or reschedule games. There are so many contests occurring, with
some states currently playing football and other sports they were unable to
offer last fall, coupled with regular spring sports now underway, there simply
are not enough people to officiate all scheduled games.According to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO),
registration of officials across the country is down about 30 percent this
year. In Kansas from 2019-20 to 2020-2021 we saw a 14% reduction of officials
registering.&nbsp; Five hundred-twenty fewer officials
registered in 2020-2021. In the past 10 years – since 2010-2011 we are down 26%
- 1092 few officials registered in 2020-2021. Sports with the largest percent
decrease were basketball and wrestling at approximately 17% reduction. Tennessee and Georgia have reported declines in baseball umpires. In one
county in Georgia, one middle school had to cancel its baseball season due to a
lack of umpires.In

Officials say the project will include a water main replacement as well as a new street overlay on Reid Ave. from Oak St. to Philip Ave.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline jumped 6 cents over the past two weeks, to $3.02 per gallon. 

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says Sunday that the increase comes as the costs of crude oil and ethanol also rose. Ethanol must be blended by refiners into gasoline, per federal rules. 

The price at the pump is $1.05 higher than it was a year ago. 

The highest average price in the nation right now is $4.16 a gallon in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lowest average is $2.55 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The risk dial moved from 1.61 up to 1.78, which is in the
moderate risk level. There were changes in the following variables
that contributed to movement in the dial:

Vaccines play a critical role in
decreasing the spread of disease and death within our communities.
WCDHD closely monitors the vaccination rates in each of the six
counties within our jurisdiction. Currently, the vaccination rate for
the district is at 23% of those who are fully vaccinated. The highest
rate is 36% in Hooker County, with the lowest rate in McPherson
County at 14%. The next Risk Dial release will include a variable
that indicates the percentage of the eligible WCDHD jurisdiction
population that is fully vaccinated. Leading world experts state that
between 60% and 80% of the population needs to be vaccinated to
achieve herd immunity.&nbsp; Based on these highly reputable sources,
WCDHD among other local health departments across the state, has set
a goal of having 75% of eligible people fully vaccinated.&nbsp;
Currently, that includes everyone age 16 and older that does not have
a contraindication for vaccination.&nbsp; Note: vaccinating 75% of
persons 50 years of age and older will be a key milestone in reducing
the impact of COVID-19 in our community, since that age group
includes the vast majority of persons who are at increased risk of
hospitalization or death due to COVID-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There have been 42 new cases of
COVID-19 reported to WCDHD.

“As we see the increase in new cases
and the low percentage rates of COVID-19 vaccinations within our
area, we are reminded of the importance of our communities following
the mitigation strategies that have gotten us this far and
re-energizing efforts for individuals to become immunized,” stated
Shannon Vanderheiden, Executive Director of WCDHD.

While in the Moderate Risk category,
physical distance of 6 feet or greater, wearing face coverings when
outside the home, frequent handwashing (or use of hand sanitizer),
staying home if you are having flu-like or COVID-like symptoms,
disinfecting high touch surfaces, and having at-risk and vulnerable
people remain home are recommended as the greatest tools in reducing

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Nebraska School Activities Association has released the 2021 State Soccer Championship Brackets.

The North Platte High School Lady Bulldogs are the #4 seed and will face #5 seed, Omaha Marian, in the first round Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. from Morrison Stadium at Creighton University.

The Lady Dawgs defeated Lincoln Pius X in their District final 3-0 last week.

The Dawgs are 15-4 on the season, Marian is 14-3.

Kyle Laboria will be calling the action on FM 98.1 and streaming audio on the Post.

Free Fishing and Park Entry Day, held annually in Nebraska on the Saturday preceding Memorial Day weekend, means anyone can explore outdoor opportunities at any Nebraska state park, state recreation area or state historical park. Anglers must observe all fishing regulations. Camping, lodging and all other user fees still apply at state park areas.

In conjunction with the event, Ponca State Park will host the Bill Morris Memorial Fishing Derby and Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area will host the Bob Bruner Memorial Fishing Derby.

Ponca’s derby, which is open to all ages, is from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Participants may fish as long or little as they like and can win prizes. Event rules and an official derby measuring tape should be picked up at the Resource and Education Center, where bait is available for purchase and loaner fishing poles are available upon request.

Fremont Lakes SRA fishing derby, for children, is from 9 a.m. to noon. Local radio stations, volunteers and civic groups will be on hand to provide food, prizes, loaner fishing tackle, bait and instruction.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-During the evening hours of Wednesday, May 5, investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol inspections in Keith County.

In total, 15 businesses were inspected. One business,&nbsp;Cenex Zip Trip 80 in Ogallala, sold alcohol to a minor for a non-compliance rate of 7 percent. All businesses checked the minor’s ID.

The businesses included liquor stores, convenience stores, restaurants, and bars. Businesses that fail the inspections are referred the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State officials say Nebraska will issue emergency payments on Tuesday to residents who received food stamp benefits in April as part of the federal pandemic assistance law. 

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said it will issue the payments through Sept. 30 to comply with the federal American Rescue Plan Act. 

Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will not have to take any action to get the extra support, because the increased benefits will go directly to their EBT cards. Under the law, all SNAP households must receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments.

Nebraska to issue supplemental SNAP benefits on Tuesday

CRETE, Neb. (AP) — A small university in Nebraska is turning to the gridiron for its new president. 

Doane University announced Friday that 61-year-old Roger Hughes will take over as president on June 1. He succeeds Jacque Carter, who resigned last June. 

Hughes has been the head football coach at Stetson University in Florida since 2011. Before that, he was head coach at Princeton University from 2000 to 2009. Hughes is a native of Crawford, Nebraska and has a doctorate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

He says in a statement that his life “has been devoted to helping young people become leaders and the best version of themselves.”

About 180 students participated in commencement ceremonies at North Platte Community College Friday.

Friends and family gathered in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium for the conferment of degrees, diplomas and certificates.

This year’s President’s Award was presented to Louie Stithem, former member of the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors.

Nursing graduate Antonia Villani was the student commencement speaker. She also spoke during an Associate Degree Nursing pinning and commencement ceremony prior to the main commencement.&nbsp;

Among other things, Villani drew on personal experiences to encourage those in attendance to stay strong in the face of adversity.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have given initial approval to a bill that would allow police to collect DNA samples from people who are charged with but not yet convicted of violent crimes, despite objections that it would infringe on civil liberties. 

Supporters liken the measure to police fingerprinting someone who was just arrested and say it could help solve cold cases. 

But opponents see the proposal as a potential violation of constitutional search and seizure protections, although the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld similar laws. 

Lawmakers advanced the bill, 30-11, after overcoming an eight-hour legislative filibuster.

NPCC nursing students recognized with pinning/commencement ceremony

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman has died following an accident on Highway 44 near Kearney. 

KSNB-TV reports that the accident happened Thursday afternoon. The Nebraska State Patrol says 40-year-old Brandi Nigh was making a U-turn when another southbound vehicle struck her Honda Accord. Then, a northbound truck struck both vehicles. 

Nigh was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was seriously hurt.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-After a COVID-forced hiatus, movies are back at the Fox Theatre in downtown North Platte.

Movies returned last weekend, and organizers are hoping to build off the success.

Toy Story 4 will be the featured film this week, with showings on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $5 per person and concessions will be available.
