North Platte 'Santa Cop' application interviews happening through Thursday

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept lottery applications for mountain lion permits Nov. 2 – Dec. 9, 2020, for the 2021 hunting season.

Permits are available only to Nebraska residents, who may have one permit per calendar year. The bag limit for each permit is one mountain lion of either sex.

The 2021 Season 1 in the Pine Ridge Unit, which no longer is divided into subunits, will be Jan. 2-Feb. 28. Before Feb. 28, the season will close immediately if either the annual harvest limit of four mountain lions or sublimit of two female mountain lions is reached. There will be 320 permits issued and hunting with dogs will not be allowed.

If the harvest limit is not reached in Season 1, an Auxiliary Season will be held March 13-31. The season will close immediately if either the harvest limit or sublimit is reached. Unsuccessful Season 1 hunters may apply to convert the permit to an Auxiliary Season permit. There will be one permit issued for each mountain lion remaining in the harvest limit. Hunting with dogs will be allowed.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The number of deaths linked to the coronavirus has topped 600 in Nebraska, and the number of people hospitalized with the virus in the state remains near record levels as the recent surge of new cases continues.

Nebraska health officials reported seven new deaths Monday to give the state 603 deaths linked to COVID-19. The number of virus cases grew by 702 to reach 64,499 since the pandemic began, and the rate of new cases ranked eighth-highest in the nation.

The state also said 427 people are hospitalized with the virus, which is just below the record of 436 that was set on Saturday. MPCC to host virtual job fair

LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters should expect to find pheasants in numbers similar or slightly higher than last year when the Nebraska pheasant, quail and partridge seasons open on Oct. 31.

Pheasant counts were up 5% statewide, according to the July Rural Mail Carrier Survey. Notable increases were observed in the southwest and Panhandle, which should offer the best pheasant hunting opportunities and abundant public access.

Quail counts during the July survey and the Whistle Count Survey were 14-16% lower compared to 2019. Populations seem to be recovering from losses incurred during the severe spring of 2019. Nesting conditions were favorable throughout their core range in southeastern and south-central Nebraska, which should offer the best quail hunting opportunities this fall.

Shelly Allen, Great Plains Health environmental services technician, has been selected as the Great Plains Health Caring Kind Award recipient for 2020.

A longstanding tradition of the Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA), the award pays tribute to outstanding healthcare employees who have demonstrated compassion for patients, cooperation with coworkers and dedication to excellence in the role they play at their facility.

Each year, NHA member hospitals and health care systems select one person from their organization to be recognized at the NHA’s annual convention. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Great Plains Health celebrated Shelly with a small luncheon with her coworkers and presented her with the award plaque during a meeting filled with hospital leadership.

Nebraska State Patrol hiring troopers

Individuals interested in pursuing a University of Nebraska Medical Center degree in radiography can now get their start at Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC). And soon they’ll be able to receive the rest of their education and training for that UNMC degree in North Platte, at Great Plains Health.

A new agreement between MPCC and UNMC will allow Mid-Plains students to complete 26 credit hours that are eligible for transfer to the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions’ radiography program, should they be accepted.

UNMC coursework for the 21-month professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in medical imaging and therapeutic sciences will be completed onsite at Great Plains Health via distance education technology. UNMC expects to enroll its first group of radiography students for the North Platte program site in the fall of 2021.

Tammy Webster, PhD, UNMC’s radiography program director, said the College of Allied Health Professions is excited about these partnerships, which will allow these future radiographers to serve North Platte and its surrounding communities while remaining closer to their hometowns. “We are now accepting applications for this inaugural class,” Dr. Webster said.

Prior to these agreements, students interested in pursuing radiography had to go directly to the eastern end of the state for instruction.

“These partnerships support our mission to provide exemplar educational opportunities across the state, while helping fill Nebraska’s health care workforce needs,” Dr. Webster said.

Employment of radiographers in both MPCC’s service area and throughout Nebraska is expected to increase at a rate faster than the national average over the next decade. That’s due to an aging population that will need additional medical imaging as well as the anticipated retirement of many existing radiographers.

There were 93 radiography-related jobs in MPCC’s 18-county service area in 2019, the most recent full year for which data is available, according to labor market analytics firm Emsi.

“The idea began as a desire to help Great Plains Health secure more radiographers,” said Jody Tomanek, PhD, MPCC area vice president of academic affairs and North Platte Community College. “In addition to filling a need in the community, this agreement adds to our existing partnerships with GP Health and the Med Center. It’s always my goal to provide opportunities for students, and this is just another opportunity for students in our area to start here then transfer on.”

Fiona Libsack, Great Plains Health chief development officer, said: “Giving local students the opportunity to grow in medical professions without having to leave the community is the best strategy for ensuring that our region’s hospitals have the professionals they need to serve area patients with quality care.”

The MPCC-UNMC agreement provides a roadmap for prospective students to complete both an associate degree and a bachelor's degree in approximately three years.

UNMC adds North Platte radiography site, Mid-Plains Community College partnership

As Conner continues to heal, he still faces a long road to recovery.

According to Conner's mother, Shannon Sauer,&nbsp;Conner's doctor said the second half of the surgery went well he has removed 99.9% of the burn.

Shannon said Integra (artificial skin) was placed on the chest and sides secured in place with staples. The surgeon then placed what is called Allograft (human cadaver skin) on the left armpit/shoulder since this is a joint area. 

Conner will now heal for two weeks and will have always a third surgery on Nov 6th to place the skin graft.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte eighth-grader is receiving treatment at a Lincoln hospital after he was seriously burned following a medical episode in the shower on Monday.

According to family members, Conner Dockery was in the shower getting prepared for school when he suffered a seizure-like episode, which caused him to blackout and fall.

As Conner fell, he accidentally grabbed the faucet handle and turned it to the hottest possible setting.

Unable to call for help or move, Conner laid there being scalded by the hot water.

Conner's mother found him after some time and summoned help.

Conner was initially transported and treated at Great Plains Health before being transferred to Saint Elizabeth's Burn Center in Lincoln, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Conner's family members say he was burned on his chest, stomach, arms, both sides, and his entire back. Doctors determined that twenty-six percent of Conner's body has sustained 3rd-degree burns.

In the following weeks, Conner faces at least four surgeries, including numerous skin grafts.

According to Conner's aunt, Conner had his first surgery yesterday at 1:35 pm. His back was debrided (scraped) and Integra (artificial skin used to cover severe burns and wounds) was secured by staples all down his back. The second surgery is Monday at 1:30 pm for his chest, arms, and his sides. This surgery will be the same process.&nbsp;

Doctors performed more tests to determine the initial cause of the fall, and family members say it was determined that Conner's kidneys were not functioning properly. He was diagnosed with&nbsp;Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys due to urine build-up) and Renal Artery Stenosis (hardening of the arteries) in both kidneys. An EEG, which evaluates the electrical activity in the brain, also showed abnormalities and further testing will be needed.

As Conner receives treatment, his family will be traveling to Lincoln, missing work, and staying in motel rooms. As expenses mount, a fund has been established to help them. LINCOLN, Neb. (NSP)-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to dozens of snow-related incidents as most of Nebraska experienced its first snowfall of the season. From Sunday through the Monday morning commute, troopers responded to more than 170 snow-related incidents on Nebraska roads.

“The last couple days have provided a reminder of how quickly driving conditions can change with freezing rain or snow,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As the weather improves this week, we encourage all drivers to remember this snow event and keep their winter driving skills ready for the upcoming season.”

Troopers responded to 45 property damage or personal injury crashes throughout the state from Sunday to Monday morning. Troopers also assisted 125 motorists in need of help after a slide-off, disabled vehicle, or other travel issues. Troopers also assisted outside agencies in several situations.

“Our partners at NDOT were prepared for this storm and worked quickly as the snow fell,” said Colonel Bolduc. “Throughout the upcoming winter season, we know that NDOT teams and our troopers will remain ready to help during any winter weather event.”

Any motorist in need of assistance on Nebraska roads can call *55 to reach the NSP Highway Helpline. Nebraska troopers respond to over 170 snow-related incidents

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's health care providers and elderly and vulnerable residents will be first in line to get a coronavirus vaccination when it becomes available as early as this year, state officials said Monday.

Gov. Pete Ricketts and public health officials said they plan to give those groups top priority in their plans to distribute their limited share of the vaccine, once it's developed and shipped.

The announcement came as Nebraska sees a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-nebraska-c574f928c7d487df16d7fee4f508ab2f" target="_blank">record number of people</a>&nbsp;hospitalized because of the coronavirus. The number of new virus-related hospitalizations jumped to a record-high 436 on Saturday, and the number on Sunday held fairly steady at 435, according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">state's online tracking portal</a>.

"We expect that vaccine supply will be limited early on, and initial doses will go to health care personnel and critical populations," said Angie Ling, incident commander for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

States were required to submit their distribution plans to the federal government earlier this month as researchers close in on a vaccine to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Nebraska plans to dispense its vaccine supply in phases, using an existing state network of health care providers, local public health departments and hospitals, Ling said.

Initial doses will go to workers at hospitals, long-term care facilities, urgent care clinics and other health providers. Residents who are at least 65 years old and those with underlying health conditions such as cancer, kidney disease and obesity will also get priority. So will workers who are considered critical, although Ling said local health officials will determine who meets that definition.

Eventually, the vaccine will become available to the broader public. State officials said they don't know how long it will take to vaccinate all residents who want the shot.

Ling said the state's plan is a "living document" that could still be changed, but it's designed to do the most good based on current scientific evidence. She said the federal government reviewed Nebraska's plan and offered feedback but didn't have to formally approve it.

For most people, the new virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and those with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

Nebraska public health officials reported 582 new coronavirus cases on Sunday and have confirmed 63,797 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. The actual number is likely higher because some cases aren't reported. State officials have confirmed 596 deaths so far.

Ricketts said he doesn't plan to mandate that people in Nebraska get the vaccine. The vaccine will be free for people who receive it because the federal government has promised to cover the costs.

"My anticipation is there will be lot of education with regard to the vaccine, but it will be voluntary," Ricketts said.

Before the pandemic, the state's distribution network was designed to help get vaccinations to children. State officials said they chose the network because its members already know how to properly store and handle vaccines and won't need additional training.

"It kind of makes it an easier transition," said Jeri Weberg-Bryce, a program manager with the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The actual number is likely higher because some cases aren't reported. State officials have confirmed 596 deaths so far.Ricketts said he doesn't plan to mandate that people in Nebraska get the vaccine. The vaccine will be free for people who receive it because the federal government has promised to cover the costs."My anticipation is there will be lot of education with regard to the vaccine, but it will be voluntary," Ricketts said.Before the pandemic, the state's distribution network was designed to help get vaccinations to children. State officials said they chose the network because its members already know how to properly store and handle vaccines and won't need additional training."It kind of makes it an easier transition," said Jeri Weberg-Bryce, a program manager with the state Department of Health and Human Services.

North Platte Community College will host an American Red Cross blood drive on November 9 on its South Campus. The drive, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. outside McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

All blood, platelet and plasma donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies. Test results will be available within seven to 10 days through the Red Cross Blood Donor app or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity. The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test.

The Red Cross estimates that about 20 percent of blood donations each year come from young donors, such as college students. The need is urgent as hospitals resume surgeries and treatments that require blood products.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health to donate. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger must also meet certain height and weight requirements.

Those interested in making an appointment or receiving more information can do so through the&nbsp;American Red Cross Blood Donor app, RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Donors are encouraged to complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass to help speed up the process. A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification will be required at check-in.

To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, individuals who do not feel well or who believe they may be ill with COVID-19 should postpone their donation.

Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance.

Late start for North Platte Public Schools on Monday

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has been made aware of scammers targeting electric customers in areas across the state.  

Reports from customers indicate that the scammers are calling customers and will tell them they need to make a payment for a meter replacement or threaten to disconnect the customer if they do not make an immediate payment over the phone.  Scammers will ask for customers to provide a payment method such as a wire transfer, gift cards or pre-paid debit cards such as a Green Dot card.    

NPPD does not call to ask customers for a credit card number or demand payment with a pre-paid card, and any customer receiving this type of call should not make a payment over the phone. If a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be from NPPD and feels pressured for immediate payment or personal information, they should hang up the phone and call NPPD’s Customer Contact Center at 1-877-ASK-NPPD.  

Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) has recently reported similar scam activity affecting customers in their service territory.

Weather Service still expecting 4 to 6 inches of snow for North Platte

North Platte city officials have issued a Snow Emergency.


The City of North Platte is issuing a SNOW EMERGENCY, effective at 8
p.m. tonight. 

 Vehicles must be removed from all Emergency Snow
Routes.  The North Platte Police Department will be enforcing all
Emergency Snow Route Violations during the Snow Emergency.  Please
remove any vehicles along these routes. 

 If you have to be out during
this storm, please take your time and drive safely.

The tree planting activity with the NP City Parks and Community Connections mentoring program has been postponed until November 4th at 5:30 pm in Iron Horse Park due to inclement weather.&nbsp;

Connection’s mentors and mentees will be helping to plant trees on
October 28th,
2020 at 5:30 pm on Iron Horse Park near the Veteran’s Memorial.
Lyle Minshull, director of the City Parks Department, will be
teaching the mentoring pairs about proper planting techniques and
care of newly planted trees.  The tree planting is part of a grant
given to the city.

Community
Connections Mentoring is a community-based mentoring program, with
the flexibility of meeting at any of your favorite public locations
around town or during school lunch.&nbsp;Youth ages kindergarten
through 7th
grade are matched with adult mentors who have similar interests.
Mentoring pairs typically spend 4 to 8 hours a month together and can
include attending our two monthly group activities.&nbsp;Community
Connections utilizes the Elements of Effective Practice for
Mentoring, a research-informed best practices guide. 


Recently
mentoring pairs have also participated in the annual Doggy Dash 5k, spray-painted art in the park, had a scavenger hunt, and met to
assemble rocket kits that they are planning to launch in November as
part of STEM month to encourage youth engagement in science,
technology, engineering, and math.  


Mentoring
pairs also engage in service activities together throughout the year
to help increase connections within the community. Anyone interested
